We study the evolution of the universe in the presence of inflaton, matter, radiation, and holographic dark energy. The time evolution of the scale factor is obtained by solving the Friedmann equation of the universe with a good approximation. We present two independent ways which determine the value of the dark energy constant $d\sim 1$ from the observational data. The two ways are measuring the deceleration parameter and measuring a universal constant depending only on $d$. The universal constant is given by a dimensionless combination of three scale factors at the equipartition times of radiation-matter, radiation-dark energy, and matter-dark energy. We also discuss that the second law of thermodynamics determines the point of time when the dark energy dominated era begins in the universe.
We study some of the cosmological imprints of pre-inflationary particles. We show that each such particle provides a seed for a spherically symmetric cosmic defect. The profile of this cosmic defect is fixed and its magnitude is linear in a single parameter that is determined by the mass of the pre-inflationary particle. We study the CMB and peculiar velocity imprints of this cosmic defect and suggest that it could explain some of the large scale cosmological anomalies.
If there exist higher-spin particles during inflation which are light compared to the Hubble rate, they may leave distinct statistical anisotropic imprints on the correlators involving scalar and graviton fluctuations. We characterise such signatures using the dS/CFT$_3$ correspondence and the operator product expansion techniques. In particular, we obtain generic results for the case of partially massless higher-spin states.
We examine the possibility that a significant component of the energy density of the universe has an equation-of-state different from that of matter, radiation or cosmological constant ($Λ$). An example is a cosmic scalar field evolving in a potential, but our treatment is more general. Including this component alters cosmic evolution in a way that fits current observations well. Unlike $Λ$, it evolves dynamically and develops fluctuations, leaving a distinctive imprint on the microwave background anisotropy and mass power spectrum.
We initiate a study on various cosmological imprints of string axions whose scalar potentials have plateau regions. In such cases, we show that a delayed onset of oscillation generically leads to a parametric resonance instability. In particular, for ultralight axions, the parametric resonance can enhance the power spectrum slightly below the Jeans scale, alleviating the tension with the Lyman $α$ forest observations. We also argue that a long-lasting resonance can lead to an emission of gravitational waves at the frequency bands which are detectable by gravitational wave interferometers and p…
Backreaction effects of the large scale structure on the background dynamics have been claimed to lead to a renormalization of the background dynamics that may account for the late time acceleration of the cosmic expansion. This article emphasizes that generically the averaged flow is locally anisotropic, a property that can be related to observation. Focusing on perturbation theory, the spatially averaged shear, that characterizes the anisotropy of the flow, is computed. It is shown that this shear arising from backreaction differs from a homogeneous shear: its time evolution is different and…
We propose a phenomenological model for the early universe where there is a smooth transition between an early "quintessence" phase and a radiation dominated era. The matter content is modelled by an appropriately modified Chaplygin gas for the early universe. We constrain the model observationally by mapping the primordial power spectrum of the scalar perturbations to the latest data of WMAP7. We compute as well the spectrum of the primordial gravitational waves as would be measured today. We show that the high frequencies region of the spectrum depends on the free parameter of the model and …
In this paper we analyze the Dark Matter problem and the distribution of matter through two different approaches, which are linked by the possibility that the solution of these astronomical puzzles should be sought in the quantum imprinting of the Universe. The first approach is based on a cosmological model formulated and developed in the last ten years by the first and third authors of this paper; the so-called Archaic Universe. The second approach was formulated by Rosen in 1933 by considering the Friedmann-Einstein equations as a simple one-dimensional dynamical system reducing the cosmolo…
There has been a significant interest in modifications of the standard $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter ($Λ$CDM) cosmological model prompted by tensions between certain datasets, most notably the Hubble tension. The late-time modifications of the $Λ$CDM model can be parametrized by three time-dependent functions describing the expansion history of the Universe and gravitational effects on light and matter in the Large Scale Structure. We perform the first joint Bayesian reconstruction of these three functions from a combination of recent cosmological observations, utilizing a theory-informed prior built o…
The equation which governs the temporal evolution of a gravitational wave (GW) in curved space-time can be treated as the Schrodinger equation for a particle moving in the presence of an effective potential. When GWs propagate in an expanding Universe with constant effective potential, there is a critical value (k_c) of the comoving wave-number which discriminates the metric perturbations into oscillating (k > k_c) and non-oscillating (k < k_c) modes. As a consequence, if the non-oscillatory modes are outside the horizon they do not freeze out. The effective potential is reduced to a non-vanis…
When the cosmological constant, $Λ$, is interpreted as a thermodynamic variable in the study of black hole thermodynamics a very rich structure emerges. It is natural to interpret $Λ$ as a pressure and define the thermodynamically conjugate variable to be the thermodynamic volume of the black hole (which need not bear any relation to the geometric volume). Recent progress in this new direction for black hole thermodynamics is reviewed.
An alternative to the standard cold dark matter model has been recently proposed in which a significant fraction of the energy density of the universe is due to a dynamical scalar field ($Q$) whose effective equation-of-state differs from that of matter, radiation or cosmological constant ($Λ$). In this paper, we determine how the Q-component modifies the primordial inflation gravitational wave (tensor metric) contribution to the cosmic microwave background anisotropy and, thereby, one of the key tests of inflation.
We investigate the characteristic modifications in the evolving cosmological perturbations when dark energy interacts with dust-like matter, causing the latter's background energy density fall off with time faster than usual. Focusing in particular to the late-time cosmic evolution, we show that such an interaction (of a specific form, arising naturally in a scalar-tensor formulation, or a wide range of modified gravity equivalents thereof), can have a rather significant effect on the perturbative spectrum, than on the background configuration which is not expected to get distorted much from $…
It has been built a strict mathematical model of the thermodynamic equilibrium's establishment in the originally nonequilibrium cosmological ultrarelativistic plasma for the arbitrary accelerated Universe under the assumption that scaling of interactions of elementary particles is restored at energies above the unitary limit. It is shown, that in case of Universe positive acceleration, thermodynamic equilibrium never can be completely restored.
We reveal unifying thermodynamic aspects of so different phenomena as the cosmological electron-positron annihilation, the evaporation of primordial black holes with a narrow mass range, and the ``deflationary'' transition from an initial de Sitter phase to a subsequent standard Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker begin (FLRW) behavior.
Cosmological constant problem (in its various versions) is arguably the deepest gap in our understanding of theoretical physics, the solution to which may very likely require revisiting the Einstein theory of gravity. In this letter, I argue that the simplest consistent way to decouple gravity from the vacuum energy (and hence solve the problem) is through the introduction of an incompressible gravitational aether fluid. The theory then predicts that gravitational constant for radiation is 33% larger than that of non-relativistic matter, which is preferred by most cosmological observations (wi…
We study via numerical N-body/SPH chemistry simulations the effects of primordial non-Gaussianities on the formation of the first stars and galaxies, and investigate the impact of supernova feedback in cosmologies with different fnl. Density distributions are biased to higher values, so star formation and the consequent feedback processes take place earlier in high-fnl models and later in low-fnl ones. Mechanical feedback is responsible for shocking and evacuating the gas from star forming sites earlier in the highly non-Gaussian cases, because of the larger bias at high densities. Chemical fe…
The thermodynamics of the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole is reformulated within the context of the recently developed formalism of geometrothermodynamics (GTD). Different choices of the metric in the equilibrium states manifold are used in order to reproduce the Hawking-Page phase transition as a divergence of the thermodynamical curvature scalar. We show that the enthalpy and total energy representations of GTD does not reproduce the transition while the entropy rep- resentation gives the expected behavior.
When a subdominant light scalar field ends slow roll during inflation, but well after the Hubble exit of the pivot scales, it may determine the cosmological perturbations. This thesis investigates how such a scalar field, the spectator, may leave its impact on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation and be consequently constrained. We first introduce the observables of the CMB, namely the power spectrum $P_ζ$, spectral index $n_s$ and its running $dn_s/d\ln k$, the non-Gaussianities $f_{NL}$, $g_{NL}$ and $τ_{NL}$, and the lack of isocurvature and polarization modes. Based on these stu…
We construct the thermodynamic geometry of $2+1$ dimensional normal (exotic) BTZ black hole regarding to the fluctuation of cosmological constant. We argue that while the thermodynamic geometry of black hole without fluctuation of cosmological constant is a two dimensional flat spaces, the three dimensional thermodynamics parameters space including the cosmological constant as a fluctuating parameter will be curved. Some consequence of the fluctuation of cosmological constant will be investigated. We show that such fluctuation leads to a thermodynamics curvature which is correctly singular at …
With the help of a conformal, timelike Killing-vector we define generalized equilibrium states for cosmological fluids with particle production. For massless particles the generalized equilibrium conditions require the production rate to vanish and the well known ``global'' equilibrium of standard relativistic thermodynamics is recovered as a limiting case. The equivalence between the creation rate for particles with nonzero mass and an effective viscous fluid pressure follows as a consequence of the generalized equilibrium properties. The implications of this equivalence for the cosmological …
We present explicit expressions of the thermodynamic volume inside and outside the cosmological horizon of Eguchi-Hanson solitons in general odd dimensions. These quantities are calculable and well-defined regardless of whether or not the regularity condition for the soliton is imposed. For the inner case, we show that the reverse isoperimetric inequality is not satisfied for general values of the soliton parameter $a$, though a narrow range exists for which the inequality does hold. For the outer case, we find that the mass $M_{out}$ satisfies the maximal mass conjecture and the volume is pos…
We study the thermodynamics associated to topological black hole solutions of AdS gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics (Born-Infeld) in any dimension, using a background-independent regularization prescription for the Euclidean action given by boundary terms which explicitly depend on the extrinsic curvature (Kounterterms series). A finite action principle leads to the correct definition of thermodynamic variables as Noether charges, which satisfy a Smarr-like relation. In particular, for the odd-dimensional case, a consistent thermodynamic description is achieved if the internal energ…
It is expected that the cosmological black holes are the closest realistic solutions of gravitational theories and they evolve with time. Moreover, the natural way of defining thermodynamic entities for the stationary ones is not applicable in the case of a time dependent spacetime. Here we confine our discussion within the Sultana-Dyer metric which is a cosmological black hole solution of Einstein's gravity. In literature, there exists two expressions of horizon temperature -- one is time dependent and the other does not depend on time. To single out the correct one we find the temperature by…
Viewing the cosmological constant $Λ<0$ as an independent variable, we consider the thermodynamics of the Schwarzschild black hole in an anti-de Sitter (AdS) background. For this system, there is one approach which regards the enthalpy as the master thermodynamic variable and makes sense if one considers the vacuum pressure due to the cosmological constant acting in the volume inside the horizon and the outer size of the system is not restricted. From this approach a first law of thermodynamics emerges naturally. There is yet another approach based on the Euclidean action principle and its pat…
We explore thermodynamics of the apparent horizon in $f(T)$ gravity with both equilibrium and non-equilibrium descriptions. We find the same dual equilibrium/non-equilibrium formulation for $f(T)$ as for $f(R)$ gravity. In particular, we show that the second law of thermodynamics can be satisfied for the universe with the same temperature of the outside and inside the apparent horizon.
A cosmological gauge field with isotropic stress-energy introduces parity violation into the behavior of gravitational waves. We show that a primordial spectrum of inflationary gravitational waves develops a preferred handedness, left- or right-circularly polarized, depending on the abundance and coupling of the gauge field during the radiation era. A modest abundance of the gauge field would induce parity-violating correlations of the cosmic microwave background temperature and polarization patterns that could be detected by current and future experiments.
The thermodynamical aspects of the conformal time scale factor duality (SFD) of cosmological models within Einstein Gravity are investigated. We derive the SFD transformations of the thermodynamical quantities describing the thermal evolution of the matter fluid and of the apparent horizon. The thermodynamical properties of the self-dual cosmological models with a modified Chaplygin gas are studied in detail. We deduce the restrictions on the equation of state parameters that allow to extend scale factor duality as a UV/IR symmetry of the cosmological models consistent with their thermodynamic…
Based on the entropy relations, we derive thermodynamic bound for entropy and area of horizons of Schwarzschild-dS black hole, including the event horizon, Cauchy horizon and negative horizon (i.e. the horizon with negative value), which are all geometrical bound and made up of the cosmological radius. Consider the first derivative of entropy relations together, we get the first law of thermodynamics for all horizons. We also obtain the Smarr relation of horizons by using the scaling discussion. For thermodynamics of all horizons, the cosmological constant is treated as a thermodynamical varia…
The creation of a quantum Universe is described by a {\em density matrix} which yields an ensemble of universes with the cosmological constant limited to a bounded range $Λ_{\rm min}\leq Λ\leq Λ_{\rm max}$. The domain $Λ<Λ_{\rm min}$ is ruled out by a cosmological bootstrap requirement (the self-consistent back reaction of hot matter). The upper cutoff results from the quantum effects of vacuum energy and the conformal anomaly mediated by a special ghost-avoidance renormalization. The cutoff $Λ_{\rm max}$ establishes a new quantum scale -- the accumulation point of an infinite sequence of garl…
Early dark energy that relieves Hubble tension leaves a fingerprint in the primordial stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background that originates from cosmic string network. The signal is not only detectable with future planned GW experiments, but also distinguishable from other astrophysical and cosmological signals in the GW frequency spectrum. We find that the cosmic string GW spectrum can probe other new physics that influence the universe in post-Big-Bang-Nucleosynthesis with mid-band GW detection, which extends GW cosmic archaeology search region.
We establish a general thermodynamic scheme for cosmic fluids with internal self-interactions and discuss equilibrium and non-equilibrium aspects of such systems in connection with (generalized) symmetry properties of the cosmological dynamics. As an example we construct an exactly solvable gas dynamical model of a ``deflationary'' transition from an initial de Sitter phase to a subsequent Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) period. We demonstrate that this dynamics represents a manifestation of a conformal symmetry of an ``optical'' metric, characterized by a specific effective refra…
The extended black hole thermodynamics in which the cosmological constant plays the role of pressure significantly enriches the phase structure of the theory. In order to understand the extended black hole thermodynamics more precisely, we let the value of the cosmological constant vary dynamically via tunneling from one vacuum to another in a black hole induced vacuum decay. In this process, entropy of the matter/energy released by a black hole is crucial to validate the second law of thermodynamics. In other words, without taking this bulk entropy into account, entropy associated with the bl…
The thermodynamics of the Kerr-AdS black hole is reformulated within the context of the formalism of geometrothermodynamics (GTD) and the cosmological constant is considered as a new thermodynamical parameter. We conclude that the mass of the black hole corresponds to the total enthalpy of this system. Choosing appropriately the metric in the equilibrium states manifold, we study the phase transitions as a divergence of the thermodynamical curvature scalar. This approach reproduces the Hawking-Page transition and shows that considering the cosmological constant as a thermodynamical parameter d…
Our aim is to investigate the thermodynamic properties of the universe bounded by the cosmological event horizon and dominated by the tachyon fluid. We give two different laws of evolution of our universe. Further, we show the first law and the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) are both satisfied in two cases, but their properties of the thermodynamic equilibrium are totally different. Besides, under our solutions, we find the validity of the laws of thermodynamics is irrelevant with the parameters of the tachyon fluid. Finally, we conclude that the universe bounded by the cosmol…
Results of numerical simulation constructed before strict mathematical model of an establishment of thermodynamic equilibrium in originally nonequilibrium cosmological ultrarelativistic plasma for the Universe with any acceleration in the assumption of restoration of a scalling of interactions of elementary particles are presented at energies above a unitary limit. Limiting parametres of residual nonequilibrium distribution of nonequilibrium relic particles of ultrahigh energies are found.
In this work, we apply quantum corrected entropy function derived from the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) to the Holographic Equipartition Law to study the cosmological scenario in Randall-Sundrum (RS) II brane. An extra driving term has come up in the effective Friedmann equation for a homogeneous, isotropic and spatially flat universe. Further, thermodynamic prescription of the universe constraints this term eventually with order equivalent to that of the cosmological constant.
We develop the thermodynamics of field theories characterized by non-local propagators. We analyze the partition function and main thermodynamic properties arising from perturbative thermal loops. We focus on the p-adic models associated with the tachyon phenomenology in string theories. We reproduce well known features of these theories, but also obtain many new results. In particular, we explain how to maintain consistency of such non-local theories by avoiding the appearance of ghosts at finite temperature. As a consequence of this fact, the vacuum energy in p-adic theories becomes positive…
We present Friedmann flat spacetime uncertainty relations (STUR) together with some cosmological implications. An interesting link between the Principle of "gravitational stability against localization of events" (PGSL) and the holographic Bekenstein entropy bound (HEB) is also investigated. The same theorems leading to our STUR are used to calculate, thanks to the holographic principle, the entropy of the universe at its apparent horizon. The generalized entropy formula can be used to discuss interesting links with a quantum spacetime.
The entropy of a de Sitter horizon was derived long ago by Gibbons and Hawking via a gravitational partition function. Since there is no boundary at which to define the temperature or energy of the ensemble, the statistical foundation of their approach has remained obscure. To place the statistical ensemble on a firm footing we introduce an artificial "York boundary", with either canonical or microcanonical boundary conditions, as has been done previously for black hole ensembles. The partition function and the density of states are expressed as integrals over paths in the constrained, spheric…
We consider a possibility that the cosmological constant may not be a constant, but a free thermodynamical variable. To this end we construct a microscopic model of a spacelike two-sphere just inside of the cosmological horizon of the de Sitter spacetime. In our model the spacelike two-sphere in question is assumed to consist of discrete constituents, each of them contributing to the two-sphere an area, which is in an integer times a constant. Using our model we obtain a thermodynamical equation of state for the cosmological constant. Our equation of state implies that the cosmological constan…
It has been claimed that the cosmological constant in AdS black holes such as the BTZ black hole plays the role of the thermodynamic variable of a pressure in the thermodynamic first law and the Smarr relation from the scaling law of the Christodoulou-Ruffini formula. However, the dual solution of the BTZ black hole is the black string which is asymptotically flat despite the presence of the cosmological constant, and so the explicit form of the pressure with the role of the cosmological constant is unclear in the black string since the pressure is subject to the choice of the energy-momentum …
In this work we present the generalization of some thermodynamic properties of the black body radiation (BBR) towards an $n-$dimensional Euclidean space. For this case the Planck function and the Stefan-Boltzmann law have already been given by Landsberg and de Vos and some adjustments by Menon and Agrawal. However, since then no much more has been done on this subject and we believe there are some relevant aspects yet to explore. In addition to the results previously found we calculate the thermodynamic potentials, the efficiency of the Carnot engine, the law for adiabatic processes and the he…
In this paper we will show that using the cosmological constant as a new thermodynamical state variable, the differential and integral mass formulas of the first law of thermodynamics for asymptotic flat spacetimes can be extended to be used at the two horizons of the (2+1) dimensional BTZ black hole. We also extend this equations to the stringy description of the BTZ black hole, in which two new systems that resemble the right and left modes of effective string theory, are defined in terms of the inner and outer horizons.
We extensively study the evolution and distinct signatures of cosmological models, in which dark energy interacts directly with dark matter. We first focus on the imprints of these coupled models on the cosmic microwave background temperature power spectrum, in which we discuss the multipole peak separation together with the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. We also address the growth of matter perturbations, and disentangle the interacting dark energy models using the expansion history together with the growth history. We find that a disformal coupling between dark matter and dark energy induces…
We study evolution and thermodynamics of a slow-roll transition between early and late time de Sitter phases, both in the homogeneous case and in the presence of a black hole, in a scalar field model with a generic potential having both a maximum and a positive minimum. Asymptotically future de Sitter spacetimes are characterized by ADM charges known as cosmological tensions. We show that the late time de Sitter phase has finite cosmological tension when the scalar field oscillation around its minimum is underdamped, while the cosmological tension in the overdamped case diverges. We compute th…
Combining the second-order entropy flow vector of the causal Israel-Stewart theory with the conformal Killing-vector property of $u_{i}/T$, where $u_{i}$ is the four-velocity of the medium and T its equilibrium temperature, we investigate generalized equilibrium states for cosmological fluids with nonconserved particle number. We calculate the corresponding equilibrium particle production rate and show that this quantity is reduced compared with the results of the previously studied first-order theory. Generalized equilibrium for massive particles turns out to be compatible with a dependence $…
