We present an ultra-high-precision numerical study of the spectrum of multifractal exponents $Δ_q$ characterizing anomalous scaling of wave function moments $<|ψ|^{2q}>$ at the quantum Hall transition. The result reads $Δ_q = 2q(1-q)[b_0 + b_1(q-1/2)^2 + ...]$, with $b_0 = 0.1291\pm 0.0002$ and $b_1 = 0.0029\pm 0.0003$. The central finding is that the spectrum is not exactly parabolic, $b_1\ne 0$. This rules out a class of theories of Wess-Zumino-Witten type proposed recently as possible conformal field theories of the quantum Hall critical point.
We investigate numerically the statistics of wavefunction amplitudes $ψ({\bf r})$ at the integer quantum Hall transition. It is demonstrated that in the limit of a large system size the distribution function of $|ψ|^2$ is log-normal, so that the multifractal spectrum $f(α)$ is exactly parabolic. Our findings lend strong support to a recent conjecture for a critical theory of the quantum Hall transition.
Statistical properties of critical wave functions at the spin quantum Hall transition are studied both numerically and analytically (via mapping onto the classical percolation). It is shown that the index $η$ characterizing the decay of wave function correlations is equal to 1/4, at variance with the $r^{-1/2}$ decay of the diffusion propagator. The multifractality spectra of eigenfunctions and of two-point conductances are found to be close-to-parabolic, $Δ_q\simeq q(1-q)/8$ and $X_q\simeq q(3-q)/4$.
Based on differences of generalized Rényi entropies nontrivial constraints on the shape of the distribution function of broadly distributed observables are derived introducing a new parameter in order to quantify the deviation from lognormality. As a test example the properties of the two--measure random Cantor set are calculated exactly and finally using the results of numerical simulations the distribution of the eigenvector components calculated in the critical region of the lowest Landau--band is analyzed.
We analyze the critical behavior of the dephasing rate induced by short-range electron-electron interaction near an Anderson transition of metal-insulator or quantum Hall type. The corresponding exponent characterizes the scaling of the transition width with temperature. Assuming no spin degeneracy, the critical behavior can be studied by performing the scaling analysis in the vicinity of the non-interacting fixed point, since the latter is stable with respect to the interaction. We combine an analytical treatment (that includes the identification of operators responsible for dephasing in the …
Scaling of various local observables with a system size at Anderson transition criticality is characterized by a generalized multifractality. We study the generalized multifractality in the spin quantum Hall symmetry class (class C) in the presence of interaction. We employ Finkel'stein nonlinear sigma model and construct the pure scaling derivativeless operators for class C in the presence of interaction. Within the two-loop renormalization group analysis we compute the anomalous dimensions of the pure scaling operators and demonstrate that they are affected by the interaction. We find that t…
The statistical properties of wave functions at the critical point of the spin quantum Hall transition are studied. The main emphasis is put onto determination of the spectrum of multifractal exponents $Δ_q$ governing the scaling of moments $<|ψ|^{2q}>\sim L^{-qd-Δ_q}$ with the system size $L$ and the spatial decay of wave function correlations. Two- and three-point correlation functions are calculated analytically by means of mapping onto the classical percolation, yielding the values $Δ_2=-1/4$ and $Δ_3=-3/4$. The multifractality spectrum obtained from numerical simulations is given with a g…
The quantum spin Hall effect shares many similarities (and some important differences) with the quantum Hall effect for the electric charge. As with the quantum (electric charge) Hall effect, there exists a correspondence between bulk and boundary physics that allows to characterize the quantum spin Hall effect in diverse and complementary ways. In this paper, we derive from the network model that encodes the quantum spin Hall effect, the so-called Z_2 network model, a Dirac Hamiltonian in two dimensions. In the clean limit of this Dirac Hamiltonian, we show that the bulk Kane-Mele Z_2 invaria…
We study hierarchical network models which have recently been introduced to approximate the Chalker-Coddington model for the integer quantum Hall effect (A.G. Galstyan and M.E. Raikh, PRB 56 1422 (1997); Arovas et al., PRB 56, 4751 (1997)). The hierarchical structure is due to a recursive method starting from a finite elementary cell. The localization-delocalization transition occurring in these models is displayed in the flow of the conductance distribution under increasing system size. We numerically determine this flow, calculate the critical conductance distribution, the critical exponent …
We study multifractal spectra of critical wave functions at the integer quantum Hall plateau transition using the Chalker-Coddington network model. Our numerical results provide important new constraints which any critical theory for the transition will have to satisfy. We find a non-parabolic multifractal spectrum and we further determine the ratio of boundary to bulk multifractal exponents. Our results rule out an exactly parabolic spectrum that has been the centerpiece in a number of proposals for critical field theories of the transition. In addition, we demonstrate analytically exact para…
Multifractal scaling of critical wave functions at a disorder-driven (Anderson) localization transition is modified near boundaries of a sample. Here this effect is studied for the example of the spin quantum Hall plateau transition using the supersymmetry technique for disorder averaging. Upon mapping of the spin quantum Hall transition to the classical percolation problem with reflecting boundaries, a number of multifractal exponents governing wave function scaling near a boundary are obtained exactly. Moreover, additional exact boundary scaling exponents of the localization problem are extr…
We present the first experimental evidence for the multifractality of a transport property at a topological phase transition. In particular, we show that conductance fluctuations display multifractality at the integer-quantum-Hall $ν=1 \longleftrightarrow ν=2$ plateau-to-plateau transition in a high-mobility mesoscopic graphene device. We establish that to observe this multifractality, it is crucial to work with very high-mobility devices with a well-defined critical point. This multifractality gets rapidly suppressed as the chemical potential moves away from these critical points. Our combina…
The von Neumann entanglement entropy is a useful measure to characterize a quantum phase transition. We investigate the non-analyticity of this entropy at disorder-dominated quantum phase transitions in non-interacting electronic systems. At these critical points, the von Neumann entropy is determined by the single particle wave function intensity which exhibits complex scale invariant fluctuations. We find that the concept of multifractality is naturally suited for studying von Neumann entropy of the critical wave functions. Our numerical simulations of the three dimensional Anderson localiza…
We offer a new perspective to the problem of characterizing mesoscopic fluctuations in the inter-plateau region of the integer quantum Hall transition. We found that longitudinal and transverse conductance fluctuations, generated by varying the external magnetic field within a microscopic model, are multifractal and lead to distributions of conductance increments (magnetoconductance) with heavy tails (intermittency) and signatures of a hierarchical structure (a cascade) in the corresponding stochastic process, akin to Kolmogorov's theory of fluid turbulence. We confirm this picture by interpre…
We develop the concept of surface multifractality for localization-delocalization (LD) transitions in disordered electronic systems. We point out that the critical behavior of various observables related to wave functions near a boundary at a LD transition is different from that in the bulk. We illustrate this point with a calculation of boundary critical and multifractal behavior at the 2D spin quantum Hall transition and in a 2D metal at scales below the localization length.
Using numerical simulations, we investigate the distribution of Kondo temperatures at the Anderson transition. In agreement with previous work, we find that the distribution has a long tail at small Kondo temperatures. Recently, an approximation for the tail of the distribution was derived analytically. This approximation takes into account the multifractal distribution of the wavefunction amplitudes (in the parabolic approximation), and power law correlations between wave function intensities, at the Anderson transition. It was predicted that the distribution of Kondo temperatures has a power…
We study multifractal properties of wave functions for a one-parameter family of quantum maps displaying the whole range of spectral statistics intermediate between integrable and chaotic statistics. We perform extensive numerical computations and provide analytical arguments showing that the generalized fractal dimensions are directly related to the parameter of the underlying classical map, and thus to other properties such as spectral statistics. Our results could be relevant for Anderson and quantum Hall transitions, where wave functions also show multifractality.
We generalize universal relations between the multifractal exponent α_0 for the scaling of the typical wave function magnitude at a (Anderson) localization-delocalization transition in two dimensions and the corresponding critical finite size scaling (FSS) amplitude Λ_c of the typical localization length in quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) geometry: (i) When open boundary conditions are imposed in the transverse direction of Q1D samples (strip geometry), we show that the corresponding critical FSS amplitude Λ_c^o is universally related to the boundary multifractal exponent α_0^s for the typical wav…
On the basis of the Chalker-Coddington network model, a numerical and analytical study is made of the statistics of point-contact conductances for systems in the integer quantum Hall regime. In the Hall plateau region the point-contact conductances reflect strong localization of the electrons, while near the plateau transition they exhibit strong mesoscopic fluctuations. By mapping the network model on a supersymmetric vertex model with GL(2|2) symmetry, and postulating a two-point correlator in keeping with the rules of conformal field theory, we derive an explicit expression for the distribu…
Real-space separations of counter-moving states to opposite surfaces or edges are associated with different types of Hall effects, such as the quantum-, spin-, or the anomalous Hall effect. Some systems provide the possibility to separate a fraction of countermovers in a completely different fashion: Surface states propagating all in the same direction, balanced by counter-moving bulk states, realized, e.g., in Weyl metals with intrinsically or extrinsically broken inversion and time-reversal symmetries. In this work we show that these co-propagating surface modes are associated with a novel H…
The low-temperature magnetoresistance of parabolic quantum wells displays pronounced minima between integer filling factors. Concomitantly the Hall effect exhibits overshoots and plateau-like features next to well-defined ordinary quantum Hall plateaus. These effects set in with the occupation of the second subband. We discuss our observations in the context of single-particle Landau fan charts of a two-subband system empirically extended by a density dependent subband separation and an enhanced spin-splitting g*.
Instanton analysis for the spin quantum Hall symmetry class: Non-perturbative corrections to physical observables and generalized multifractal spectrum
We show that for the case of a many valley host semiconductor an edge channel (EC) related non-local behaviour can persist also in the 3D-regime where the quantum Hall effect (QHE) is already quenched. We demonstrate that the QHE is replaced by conductance fluctuations due to EC backscattering in the contact arms, which leads to a fluctuating current redistribution between a dissipative bulk electron system and a less-dissipative EC-system. Both electron systems are located in different valleys of the band structure. The linear increase of Rxx with the magnetic field is explained by EC-backsca…
In the absence of spin-orbit coupling, the conventional dogma of Anderson localization asserts that all states localize in two dimensions, with a glaring exception: the quantum Hall plateau transition (QHPT). In that case, the localization length diverges and interference-induced quantum-critical spatial fluctuations appear at all length scales. Normally QHPT states occur only at isolated energies; accessing them therefore requires fine-tuning of the electron density or magnetic field. In this paper we show that QHPT states can be realized throughout an energy continuum, i.e. as an "energy sta…
In PbTe wide parabolic quantum wells (WPQW) a plateau-like structure is observed in the Hall resistance, which corresponds to the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the same manner as known from the quantum Hall effect. At the same time a non-local signal is observed which corresponds to the structure in Rxx and Rxy. We find a striking correspondence between a standard quantum Hall system and this quasi 3D WPQW system.
We investigate the electronic properties of the parabolic Dirac system. In the pres- ence of magnetic field, we discuss the thermodynamical potential and the anomalous diamagnetism due to the presence of Dirac cone. The integer Hall conductivity and the intrinsic Hall conductivity induced by the Berry curvature are also investigated. Considering the disorder-induced self-energy in self-consistent Born approximation, the RKKY interaction, long-range scattering rate and the spectral function are also calculated, which are distinct to that of the clean system (without impurity).
We study a $Al_{x}Ga_{x-1}As$ parabolic quantum wells (PQW) with $GaAs/Al_{x}Ga_{x-1}As$ square superlattice. The magnetotransport in PQW with intentionally disordered short-period superlattice reveals a surprising transition from electrons distribution over whole parabolic well to independent-layer states with unequal density. The transition occurs in the perpendicular magnetic field at Landau filling factor $ν\approx3$ and is signaled by the appearance of the strong and developing fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states and by the enhanced slope of the Hall resistance. We attribute the transiti…
Scaling properties of the quantum Hall metal-insulator transition are severely affected by finite size effects in small systems. Surprisingly, despite the narrow spatial range where probability structure functions exhibit multifractal scaling, we clearly verify the existence of extended self-similarity -- a hidden infrared scaling phenomenon related to the peculiar form of the crossover at the onset of nonmultifractal behavior. As finite size effects get stronger for structure functions with negative orders, the parabolic approximation for the multifractal spectrum loses accuracy. However, by …
This short theoretical review deals with some essential ingredients for the understanding of the quantum Hall effect in graphene in comparison with the effect in conventional two-dimensional electron systems with a parabolic band dispersion. The main difference between the two systems stems from the "ultra-relativistic" character of the low-energy carriers in graphene, which are described in terms of a Dirac equation, as compared to the non-relativistic Schrödinger equation used for electrons with a parabolic band dispersion. In spite of this fundamental difference, the Hall resistance quantis…
It is proposed that the new generation of spintronics should be ideally massless and dissipationless for the realization of ultra-fast and ultra-low-power spintronic devices. We demonstrate that the spin-gapless materials with linear energy dispersion are unique materials that can realize these massless and dissipationless states. Furthermore, we propose four new types of spin Hall effects which consist of spin accumulation of equal numbers of electrons and holes having the same or opposite spin polarization at the sample edge in Hall effect measurements, but with vanishing Hall voltage. These…
We study the critical behavior near the integer quantum Hall plateau transition by focusing on the multifractal (MF) exponents $X_q$ describing the scaling of the disorder-average moments of the point contact conductance $T$ between two points of the sample, within the Chalker-Coddington network model. Past analytical work has related the exponents $X_q$ to the MF exponents $Δ_q$ of the local density of states (LDOS). To verify this relation, we numerically determine the exponents $X_q$ with high accuracy. We thereby provide, at the same time, independent numerical results for the MF exponents…
We review recent numerical studies of two-dimensional (2D) Dirac fermion theories that exhibit an unusual mechanism of topological protection against Anderson localization. These describe surface-state quasiparticles of time-reversal invariant, three-dimensional (3D) topological superconductors (TSCs), subject to the effects of quenched disorder. Numerics reveal a surprising connection between 3D TSCs in classes AIII, CI, and DIII, and 2D quantum Hall effects in classes A, C, and D. Conventional arguments derived from the non-linear $σ$-model picture imply that most TSC surface states should A…
Using canonical transformations we diagonalize approximately the Hamiltonian of a gaussian wire with Rashba spin-orbit interaction. This proceedure allows us to obtain the energy dispersion relations and the wavefunctions with good accuracy, even in systems with relatively strong Rashba coupling. With these eigenstates one can calculate the non-equilibrium spin densities induced by applying bias voltages across the sample. We focus on the $z$-component of the spin density, which is related to the spin Hall effect.
We have developed an ensemble density functional theory which includes spin degrees of freedom for nonuniform quantum Hall systems. We have applied this theory using a local-spin-density approximation to study the edge reconstruction of parabolically confined quantum dots. For a Zeeman splitting below a certain critical value, the edge of completely polarized maximum density droplet reconstructs into a spin-unpolarized structure. For larger Zeeman splittings, the edge remains polarized and develops an exchange hole.
We report on conductance fluctuations which are observed in local and non-local magnetotransport experiments. Although the Hall bar samples are of macroscopic size, the amplitude of the fluctuations from the local measurements is close to e^2/h. It is shown that the fluctuations have to be attributed to edge channel effects.
We discuss the orbital effect of a tilted magnetic field on the quantum Hall effect in parabolic quantum wells. Many-body states realized at the fractional 1/3 and 1/2 filling of the second electronic subband are studied using finite-size exact diagonalization. In both cases, we obtain the phase diagram consisting of a fractional quantum Hall fluid phase that persists for moderate tilts, and eventually undergoes a direct transition to the stripe phase. It is shown that tilting of the field probes the geometrical degree of freedom of fractional quantum Hall fluids, and can be partly related to …
We study the formation and characteristics of "spin droplets",i.e., compact spin-polarized configurations in the highest occupied Landau level, in an etched quantum Hall device at filling factors $2\leqν\leq3$. The confining potential for electrons is obtained with self-consistent electrostatic calculations on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure with experimental system parameters. Real-space spin-density-functional calculations for electrons confined in the obtained potential show the appearance of stable spin droplets at $ν\sim 5/2$. The qualitative features of the spin droplet are similar to thos…
The Landau level spectra and the quantum Hall effect of ABA-stacked multilayer graphenes are studied in the effective mass approximation. The low-energy effective mass Hamiltonian may be partially diagonalized into an approximate block-diagonal form, with each diagonal block contributing parabolic bands except, in a multilayer with an odd number of layers, for an additional block describing Dirac-like bands with a linear dispersion. We fully include the band parameters and, taking into account the symmetry of the lattice, we analyze their affect on the block-diagonal Hamiltonian. Next-nearest …
Even denominator fractional quantum Hall states in a ZnO quantum well reveal interesting phase transitions in a tilted magnetic field. We have analyzed the planar electron gas in ZnO, confined in a parabolic potential in the third dimension, perpendicular to the plane of the electron gas. Since the Landau level gap is very small in this system we have included the screened Coulomb potential in order to include the effects of all the Landau levels. We observe an incompressible state - compressible state phase transition induced by the tilted field. Additionally, the 5/2 state has been experimen…
The 3D- and 2D- behaviour of wide parabolic PbTe single quantum wells, which consist of PbTe p-n-p-structures, are studied theoretically and experimentally. A simple model combines the 2D- subband levels and the 3D-Landau levels in order to calculate the density of states in a magnetic field perpendicular to the 2D plane. It is shown that at a channel width of about 300nm on can expect to observe 3D- and 2D-behaviour at the same time. Magnetotransport experiments in selectively contacted Hall bar samples are performed at temperatures down to T = 50 mK and at magnetic fields up to B = 17 T.
We study theoretically transverse photoconductivity induced by circularly polarized radiation, i.e. the photovoltaic Hall effect, and linearly polarized radiation causing intraband optical transitions in two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). We develop a microscopic theory of these effects based on analytical solution of the Boltzmann equation for arbitrary electron spectrum and scattering mechanism. We calculate the transverse photoconductivity of 2DEG with parabolic and linear dispersion for short-range and Coulomb scatterers at different temperatures. We show that the transverse electric cur…
A recent mean-field approach to the fractional quantum Hall effect (QHE) is reviewed, with a special emphasis on the application to single-electron tunneling through a quantum dot in a high magnetic field. The theory is based on the adiabatic principle of Greiter and Wilczek, which maps an incompressible state in the integer QHE on the fractional QHE. The single-particle contribution to the addition spectrum is analyzed, for a quantum dot with a parabolic confining potential. The spectrum is shown to be related to the Fock-Darwin spectrum in the integer QHE, upon substitution of the electron c…
Optical Hall conductivity, as directly related to Faraday rotation, is theoretically studied for bilayer and trilayer graphene. In bilayer graphene, the trigonal warping of the band dispersion greatly affects the resonance structures in Faraday rotation not only in the low-energy region where small Dirac cones emerge, but also in the higher-energy parabolic bands as a sequence of satellite resonances. In ABA-stacked trilayer, the resonance spectrum is a superposition of effective monolayer and bilayer contributions with band gaps, while ABC trilayer exhibits a distinct spectrum peculiar to the…
We apply reduced density-matrix functional theory to the parabolically confined quantum Hall droplet in the spin-frozen strong magnetic field regime. One-body reduced density matrix functional method performs remarkably well in obtaining ground states, energies, and observables derivable from the one-body reduced density matrix for a wide range of system sizes. At the strongly correlated regime, the results go well beyond what can be obtained with the density functional theory. However, some of the detailed properties of the system, such as the edge Green's function, are not produced correctly…
The activation gaps for fractional quantum Hall states at filling fractions $ν=n/(2n+1)$ are computed for heterojunction, square quantum well, as well as parabolic quantum well geometries, using an interaction potential calculated from a self-consistent electronic structure calculation in the local density approximation. The finite thickness is estimated to make $\sim$30% correction to the gap in the heterojunction geometry for typical parameters, which accounts for roughly half of the discrepancy between the experiment and theoretical gaps computed for a pure two dimensional system. Certain m…
We consider the anisotropic effect in the quantum Hall systems by applying a confining potential that is not of parabolic type. This can be done by extending Susskind--Polychronakos's approach to involve the matrices of two coupled harmonic oscillators. Starting from its action, we employ a unitary transformation to diagonalize the model. The operators for building up the anisotropic ground state and creating the collective excitations can be constructed explicitly. Evaluating the area of the quantum Hall droplet, we obtain the corresponding filling factor which is found to depend on the aniso…
Quantum dots in the fractional quantum Hall regime are studied using a Hartree formulation of composite fermion theory. Under appropriate conditions the chemical potential of the dots will oscillate periodically with B due to the transfer of composite fermions between quasi-Landau bands. This effect is analogous to the addition spectrum oscillations which occur in quantum dots in the integer quantum Hall regime. Period phi_0 oscillations are found in sharply confined dots with filling factors nu=2/5 and nu=2/3. Period 3*phi_0 oscillations are found in a parabolically confined nu=2/5 dot. More …
There are known two distinct types of the integer quantum Hall effect. One is the conventional quantum Hall effect, characteristic of two-dimensional semiconductor systems, and the other is its relativistic counterpart recently observed in graphene, where charge carriers mimic Dirac fermions characterized by Berry's phase pi, which results in a shifted positions of Hall plateaus. Here we report a third type of the integer quantum Hall effect. Charge carriers in bilayer graphene have a parabolic energy spectrum but are chiral and exhibit Berry's phase 2pi affecting their quantum dynamics. The L…
A theory of electronic properties of a spin-singlet quantum Hall droplet at filling factor $ν=2$ in a parabolic quantum dot is developed. The excitation spectrum and the stability of the droplet due to the transfer of electrons into the second Landau level at low magnetic fields and due to spin flip at the edge at higher magnetic fields is determined using Hartree-Fock, exact diagonalisation, and spin-density functional methods. We show that above a critical number of electrons $N_c$ the unpolarised $ν=2$ quantum Hall droplet ceases to be a ground state in favor of spin-polarised phases. We de…
The electronic properties of a bricklayer model, which shares the same topology as the hexagonal lattice of graphene, are investigated numerically. We study the influence of random magnetic-field disorder in addition to a strong perpendicular magnetic field. We found a disorder-driven splitting of the longitudinal conductance peak within the narrow lowest Landau band near the Dirac point. The energy splitting follows a relation which is proportional to the square root of the magnetic field and linear in the disorder strength. We calculate the scale invariant peaks of the two-terminal conductan…
Based on the Born-Oppemheimer approximation, we divide total electron Hamiltonian in a spinorbit coupled system into slow orbital motion and fast interband transition process. We find that the fast motion induces a gauge field on slow orbital motion, perpendicular to electron momentum, inducing a topological phase. From this general designing principle, we present a theory for generating artificial gauge field and topological phase in a conventional two-dimensional electron gas embedded in parabolically graded GaAs/In$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$As/GaAs quantum wells with antidot lattices. By tuning the et…
We derive an effective two-dimensional Hamiltonian to describe the low energy electronic excitations of a graphite bilayer, which correspond to chiral quasiparticles with a parabolic dispersion exhibiting Berry phase $2π$. Its high-magnetic-field Landau level spectrum consists of almost equidistant groups of four-fold degenerate states at finite energy and eight zero-energy states. This can be translated into the Hall conductivity dependence on carrier density, $σ_{xy}(N)$, which exhibits plateaus at integer values of $4e^{2}/h$ and has a ``double'' $8e^{2}/h$ step between the hole and electro…
We use the microscopic Hartree-Fock approximation to investigate various quantum phase transitions associated with possible spontaneous symmetry breaking induced by a tilted magnetic field in the integral quantum Hall regime of wide parabolic wells and zero width double well (bilayer) systems. We propose a general class of variational wavefunctions that describe several types of parity, spin, and translational symmetry breaking, including spin and charge density wave phases. Zero temperature quantum phase diagrams for these systems are calculated in the parameter regime of experimental interes…
The formation of composite particles in the electron liquid under QHE conditions discussed by Jain in generalizing Laughlins many-particle state is considered by using a model for two-dimensional guiding center configurations. Describing the self-consistent field of electron repulsion by a negative parabolic potential on effective centers and an inter-center amount we show that with increasing magnetic field the ground state of so-called primary composite particles $ν=\frac{1}{q}$, $q=1,3,5,... $, is given for higher negative quantum numbers of the total angular momentum. By clustering of prim…
The quasi-quantized Hall effect (QQHE) is the three-dimensional (3D) counterpart of the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE),exhibited only by two-dimensional (2D) electron systems. It has recently been observed in layered materials, consisting of stacks of weakly coupled 2D platelets that are yet characterized by a 3D anisotropic Fermi surface. However, it is predicted that the quasi-quantized 3D version of the 2D QHE should occur in a much broader class of bulk materials, regardless of the underlying crystal structure. Here, we compare the observation of quasi-quantized plateau-like features in…
We study a quantum point contact in the fractional quantum Hall regime at Landau level filling factors 1/3 and 5/2. By using exact diagonalizations in the cylinder geometry we identify the edge modes in the presence of a parabolic confining potential. By changing the sign of the potential we can access both the tunneling through the bulk of the fluid and the tunneling between spatially separated droplets. This geometry is realized in the quantum point contact geometry for two-dimensional electron gases. In the case of the model Moore-Read Pfaffian state at filling factor 5/2 we identify the co…
