This study of 117 low-redshift Im and Sm galaxies investigates the star formation rates of late-type galaxies, to determine whether they are quasi-continuous or dominated by bursts with quiescent interludes. We analyse the distribution of star formation timescales (stellar masses/star formation rates) for the entire sample, and of gas depletion timescales for those galaxies with gas mass measurements. We find that, on average, the late-type galaxies studied could have produced their total stellar masses by an extrapolation of their current star formation activity over a period of just under a Hubble time. This is not the case for a comparison sample of earlier-type galaxies, even those with disk-dominated morphologies and similar total stellar masses to the late-type galaxies. The earlier-type galaxies are on average forming their stars more slowly at present than the average rate over their past histories. No totally quiescent Im or Sm galaxies are found, and although some evidence of intrinsic variation in the star formation rate with time is found, this is typically less than a factor of 2 increase or decrease relative to the mean level. The Im and Sm galaxies have extensive gas reservoirs and can maintain star formation at the current rate for more than another Hubble time. The average spatial distribution of star formation in the Im galaxies, and to a lesser extent the Sm galaxies, is very similar to that of the older stellar population traced by the red light.
Studies of damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems in quasar spectra are yielding very interesting results regarding the chemical evolution of these galaxies. We present some preliminary results from such a program.
The Doppler parameter distribution of Lyman-alpha absorption is calculated for a set of different reionization histories. The differences in temperature between different reionization histories are as large as a factor three to four depending on the spectrum of the ionizing sources and the redshift of helium reionization. These temperature differences result in observable differences in the Doppler parameter distribution. Best agreement with the observed Doppler parameter distribution between redshift two and four is found if hydrogen and helium are reionized simultaneously at or before redshi…
Damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems found in the spectra of high redshift quasars are believed to trace the interstellar gas in high redshift galaxies. In this paper, we study the elemental abundances of C, N, O, Al, Si, S, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, and Zn in a sample of 14 damped Lyman-alpha systems using high quality echelle spectra of quasars obtained with the 10m Keck telescope. These abundances are combined with similar measurements in the literature in order to investigate the chemical evolution of damped Lyman-alpha galaxies in the redshift range 0.7<z<4.4. Among the things investigated are: th…
The local power law relationship between the surface densities of neutral hydrogen gas and star formation rate (SFR) can be used to explore the SFR properties of damped Lyman alpha (DLA) systems at higher redshift. We find that while the SFR densities for DLA systems are consistent with luminous star forming galaxies at redshifts below z~0.6, at higher redshifts their SFR density is too low for them to provide a significant contribution to the cosmic star formation history (SFH). This suggests that the majority of DLAs may be a distinct population from the Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) or submil…
This paper presents ASCA (July 1997), XMM-Newton (December 2000) and BeppoSAX (January 2001) observations of the Piccinotti Seyfert 1 galaxy ESO198-G24. The BeppoSAX 0.1-200 keV spectrum exhibits reprocessing features, probably produced by an X-ray illuminated, relativistic accretion disk subtending a solid angle \~2 pi. During the XMM-Newton observation the fluorescent iron K-alpha line profile (centroid energy E~6.4 keV) was broad and twice as bright as in the BeppoSAX observation. An additional emission feature (E~5.7 keV), detected at the 96.3% confidence level, may be part of a relativist…
We investigate the prospects of future supernova searches to get meaningful constraints about the cosmic star formation history (CSFH) and the delay time of type Ia supernovae from star formation (tau_{Ia}), based only on supernova data. Here we parameterize the CSFH by two parameters, alpha and beta that are the evolutionary indices (proportional to (1+z)^{alpha, beta}) at z <~ 1 and >~ 1, respectively, and quantitatively examined how well the three parameters (alpha, beta, and tau_{Ia}) can be constrained in ongoing and future supernova surveys. We found that the type classification of detec…
We explore the redshift evolution of the metal content of damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) with new observations of four absorbers at z < 1.5 . The main conclusion is that the column density--weighted mean metallicity, [<Zn/H>] = -1.03 +/- 0.23 (on a logarithmic scale), is not significantly higher at z < 1.5 than at earlier epochs, despite the fact that the comoving star formation rate density of the universe was near its maximum value at this redshift. For three of the four DLAs our observations include absorption lines of Si, Mn, Cr, Fe, and Ni, as well as Zn. We argue that the relative abu…
A search for O VI at redshifts corresponding to Ly-alpha lines in the z_em ~ 2.4 QSOs HE1122-1648 and HE2217-2818 reveals that a substantial fraction of those with H I column densities log N(HI) > 14 (cm^{-2}) are highly ionized and show some heavy element enrichment. If these two sight lines are typical, then the O VI systems contain a cosmologically significant fraction of the baryons and the metals in the universe. For most systems the temperatures derived from the line widths are too low for collisional ionization to be responsible for the O VI lines. Photoionization models with a substant…
We have obtained an exceptionally high S/N, high resolution spectrum of the gravitationally lensed quasar Q1422+231 in order to investigate the metal enrichment of the IGM. A column density distribution function (CDDF) is determined for CIV, which is well fit by a power law with index 1.44 +/- 0.05. Once a correction for incompleteness is applied, we find that the CDDF is consistent with a power law down to log N(CIV) = 11.75, a factor of 10 more sensitive than previously determined. In order to determine whether the CIV enrichment extends to even lower column density HI clouds, we find that a…
Starting from the SFR per unit physical area, determined for DLAs using the C II* method, we obtain the SFR per unit comoving volume at $z$ $\approx$ 3, and find that it agrees with that for the Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). Though the mass of produced stars indicated by the SFRs is consistent with the current densities of known stellar populations, the mass of metals produced by $z$=2.5 is 30 times larger than detected in absorption in DLAs. The most likely solutions to this ``missing metals'' problem is that star formation occurs in compact bulge regions. We search for evidence of feedback an…
At redshifts z >~ 2, most of the baryons reside in the smooth intergalactic medium which is responsible for the low column density Lyman-alpha forest. This photoheated gas follows a tight temperature-density relation which introduces a cut-off in the distribution of widths of the Lyman-alpha absorption lines (b-parameters) as a function of column density. We have measured this cut-off in a sample of nine high resolution, high signal-to-noise quasar spectra, and determined the thermal evolution of the intergalactic medium in the redshift range 2.0-4.5. At redshift z ~ 3, the temperature at the …
We use a sample of rest-frame UV selected and spectroscopically observed galaxies at redshifts 1.9<z<3.4, combined with ground-based spectroscopic H-alpha and Spitzer MIPS 24 micron data, to derive the most robust measurements of the rest-frame UV, H-alpha, and infrared (IR) luminosity functions (LFs) at these redshifts. Our sample is by far the largest of its kind, with over 2000 spectroscopic redshifts in the range 1.9<z<3.4 and ~15000 photometric candidates in 29 independent fields covering a total area of almost a square degree. Our method for computing the LFs takes into account a number …
We present the first ever detection of Cobalt in a Damped Lyman Alpha system (DLA) at z = 1.92. In addition to providing important clues to the star formation history of these high redshift galaxies, we discuss how studying the Co abundance in DLAs may also help to constrain models of stellar nucleosynthesis in a regime not probed by Galactic stars.
We present high-resolution echelle spectroscopy of 676 nearby M dwarfs. Our measurements include radial velocities, equivalent widths of important chromospheric emission lines, and rotational velocities for rapidly rotating stars. We identify several distinct groups by their H alpha properties, and investigate variations in chromospheric activity amongst early (M0-M2.5) and mid (M3-M6) dwarfs. Using a volume-limited sample together with a relationship between age and chromospheric activity, we show that the rate of star formation in the immediate Solar Neighbourhood has been relatively constan…
The bright Magellanic irregular galaxy NGC 4449 was observed during the Astro-2 Space Shuttle mission by the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT), which obtained images of a ~40 arcmin field centered on the galaxy in two broad far-ultraviolet (FUV) bands centered at 1520 A and 1620 A, with 3 arcsec - 5 arcsec spatial resolution. Together with H-alpha and H-beta fluxes from ground-based Fabry-Perot images, these data are analyzed in order to explore the recent star formation history of NGC 4449. Maps of the flux ratios H-alpha/FUV and FUV/blue continuum are presented and interpreted using evolut…
Studies of elemental abundances are a fundamental tool for unveiling the nature of the high-redshift (proto-)galaxies associated to Damped Ly alpha systems (DLAs). The present contribution analyses the impact of dust and ionization effects on abundance measurements in DLAs. The behaviour of the alpha/Fe abundance ratio corrected for such effects is used to derive information on the chemical history and nature of DLA galaxies. The alpha/Fe data indicate that DLAs at z~2.5 do not represent a homogeneous class of objects. On average, DLAs show non-enhanced alpha/Fe ratios at low metallicity, sugg…
We aim at reproducing the mass- and sigma-[alpha/Fe] relations in the stellar populations of early-type galaxies by means of a cosmologically motivated assembly history for the spheroids. We implement a detailed treatment for the chemical evolution of H, He, O and Fe in GalICS, a semi-analytical model for galaxy formation which successfully reproduces basic low- and high-redshift galaxy properties. The contribution of supernovae (both type Ia and II) as well as low- and intermediate-mass stars to chemical feedback are taken into account. We find that this chemically improved GalICS does not pr…
We review the history and the current status of the understanding of the processes that regulate Lyman alpha emission from star-forming galaxies. We present some of the most recent results of our study to image local starburst galaxies in the Lyman alpha emission line using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. Particular attention is dedicated to our study of the low-metallicity, dust-poor Blue Compact Galaxy ESO338-IG04. We discuss some of our local observational results with reference to the interpretation of results of high-redshift Lyman alpha surveys and recent s…
The combination of huge databases of galaxy spectra and advances in evolutionary synthesis models in the past few years has renewed interest in an old question: How to estimate the star formation history of a galaxy out of its integrated spectrum? Fresh approaches to this classical problem are making it possible to extract the best of both worlds, producing exquisite pixel-by-pixel fits to galaxy spectra with state-of-the-art stellar population models while at the same time exploring the fabulous statistics of mega-surveys to derive the star-formation and chemical enrichment histories of diffe…
The damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) and sub-DLA quasar absorption lines provide powerful probes of the evolution of metals, gas, and stars in galaxies. One major obstacle in trying to understand the evolution of DLAs and sub-DLAs has been the small number of metallicity measurements at z < 1.5, an epoch spanning \~70 % of the cosmic history. In recent surveys with the Hubble Space Telescope and Multiple Mirror Telescope, we have doubled the DLA Zn sample at z < 1.5. Combining our results with those at higher redshifts from the literature, we find that the global mean metallicity of DLAs does not rise…
We present measurements of the \ion{K}{i} $λ7699$ line from spectra of 19 late-type members of the $α$Persei cluster obtained with the Intermediate Dispersion Spectrograph at the Isaac Newton Telescope. These stars span a narrow range of $T_\mathrm{eff}$, from 5091 K to 4771 K, and a wide range of $v \sin i$ values (9 $\mathrm{km s}^{-1}$--170 $\mathrm{km s}^{-1}$). We find empirically that larger rotational broadening increases the equivalent width of \ion{K}{i} $λ7699$ linearly for $v \sin i$ values from 15 $\mathrm{km s}^{-1}$ to 75 $\mathrm{km s}^{-1}$. This correlation breaks down for $v …
We present the first results on the history of star formation in the Universe based on the `cosmic spectrum', in particular, the volume-averaged, luminosity-weighted, stellar absorption line spectrum of present day galaxies from the 2dFGRS. This method is novel in that unlike previous studies it is not an estimator based on total luminosity density. The cosmic spectrum is fitted with models of population synthesis, tracing the history of star formation prior to the epoch of the observed galaxies, using a method we have developed which decouples continuum and spectral-line variations and is rob…
We present H-alpha and red continuum observations for a sample of late-type low surface brightness (LSB) dwarf irregular galaxies(DIGs), consisting of all the m_B<17.2 ImIV and V galaxies in the Virgo cluster (VC), and compare them with a representative sample of VC high surface brightness (HSB) DIGs. Line fluxes and equivalent widths are listed for individual HII regions and total H-alpha emission is measured for the entire DIG. The HII regions we identified do not produce all the line emission. For LSBs with line emission we find star formation rates (SFR) of 6.9-43.0 10^{-3} M_sol/yr, ~10x …
We have obtained high-resolution spectroscopy of ten red giants in the Carina dwarf spheroidal (dSph) with UVES at the ESO/VLT. Here we present the abundances of O,Na,Mg,Si,Ca,Ti and Fe. By comparing the iron abundances [Fe/H] with calcium triplet (CaT) metallicities we show that the empirical CaT technique yields good agreement with the high-resolution data for [Fe/H]>-2 dex, but tends to deviate at lower metallicities. We identify two metal poor stars with iron abundances of -2.72 and -2.50 dex. These stars are found to have enhanced [alpha/Fe] ratios similar to those of stars in the Milky W…
We investigate the dependences of galaxy star-formation history and galaxy morphology on environment, using color and H-alpha equivalent width as star-formation history indicators, using concentration and central surface brightness as morphological indicators, and using clustocentric distance as an environment indicator. Clustocentric distance has the virtue that it can be measured with very high precision over a large dynamic range. We find the following asymmetry between morphological and star-formation history parameters: star-formation history parameters relate directly to the clustocentri…
We study the evolution of 82302 star-forming (SF) galaxies from the SDSS. Our main goals are to explore new ways of handling star formation histories (SFH) obtained with our publicly available spectral synthesis code STARLIGHT, and apply them to investigate how SFHs vary as a function of nebular metallicity (Zneb). Our main results are: (1) A conventional correlation analysis shows how global properties such as luminosity, mass, dust content, mean stellar metallicity and mean stellar age relate to Zneb. (2) We present a simple formalism which compresses the results of the synthesis into time-d…
We study the cluster population in a region of 3.2x3.2 kpc^2 in the inner spiral arms of the intergacting galaxy M51, at a distance of about 1 to 3 kpc from the nucleus, based on HST--WFPC2 images taken through five broadband and two narrowband filters. We found 877 cluster candidates and we derived their ages, initial masses and extinctions by comparing their energy distribution with the Starburst99 cluster models. We describe the 3 and 2-dimensional least-square energy fitting method that was used (3DEF, 2DEF). The lack of [OIII] emission in even the youngest clusters with strong H-alpha emi…
We have modelled the observed color-magnitude diagram (CMD) at one location in M33's outskirts under the framework of a simple chemical evolution scenario which adopts instantaneous and delayed recycling for the nucleosynthetic products of Type II and Ia supernovae. In this scenario, interstellar gas forms stars at a rate modulated by the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation and gas outflow occurs at a rate proportional to the star formation rate (SFR). With this approach, we put broad constraints on the role of gas flows during this region's evolution and compare its [alpha/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] relation with…
We have analyzed the ASCA SIS and GIS data for seventeen groups and determined the average temperature and abundance of the hot x-ray emitting gas. For groups with gas temperatures less than 1.5 keV we find that the abundance is correlated with the gas temperature and luminosity. We have also determined the abundance of the alpha-elements and iron independently for those groups with sufficient counts. We find that for the cool groups (i.e. kT <1.5 keV) the ratio of alpha-elements to iron is ~1, about half that seen in clusters. Spectral fits with the S, Si and Fe abundances allowed to vary sep…
Lyman-alpha emission from high-redshift galaxies may be a powerful probe of the ionization history of the IGM at z>6: the observed Lyman-alpha emission line is sensitive to the neutral fraction of IGM hydrogen in the range 0.1-1. We present calculations of observed Lyman-alpha emission lines from z>6 galaxies, illustrating the effect of varying the many free parameters associated with the emitting galaxy, its halo, and the IGM around the galaxy. In particular, we use a dynamic model of the IGM that includes the effect of IGM infall toward the emitting galaxy. Galactic winds may play a crucial …
New results, based on one of the most comprehensive H-alpha imaging surveys of nearby Sa-Sab spirals completed to date, reveals early-type spirals to be a diverse group of galaxies that span a wide range in massive star formation rates. While the majority of Sa-Sab galaxies in our sample are forming stars at a modest rate, a significant fraction (~29%) exhibit star formation rates greater than 1 M(solar/yr), rivaling the most prolifically star forming late-type spirals. A similar diversity is apparent in the star formation history of Sa-Sab spirals as measured by their H-alpha equivalent width…
Based on the catalog of merging galaxies in the Early Data Release (EDR) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the differences of star formation history between merging galaxies and field galaxies are studied statistically by means of three spectroscopic indicators the 4000-Å break strength, the Balmer absorption-line index, and the specific star formation rate. It is found that for early-type merging galaxies the interactions will not induce significant enhancement of the star-formation activity because of its stability and lack of cool gas. On the other hand, late-type merging galaxies alw…
Using HST WFPC2 images, we have obtained U, B, V, I, and H-alpha photometry for 76 star clusters in the nuclear star-forming ring of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 4314. These clusters are likely associated with an inner Inner Lindblad Resonance, or IILR. The blue colors and H-alpha emission for most of these clusters imply very young ages of 1-15 Myr. Age estimates based on several reddening-free parameters indicate that the present epoch of star formation has lasted at least 30 Myr. By estimating the masses of stars in the clusters and comparing with the H-alpha luminosity, we conclude that a …
The cosmological star formation rate in the combined Chandra Deep Fields North and South is derived from our X-Ray Luminosity Function for Galaxies in these Deep Fields. Mild evolution is seen up to redshift order unity with SFR ~ (1 + z)^{2.7}. This is the first directly observed normal star-forming galaxy X-ray luminosity function (XLF) at cosmologically interesting redshifts (z>0). This provides the most direct measure yet of the X-ray derived cosmic star-formation history of the Universe. We make use of Bayesian statistical methods to classify the galaxies and the two types of AGN, finding…
Measurements of stellar mass loss rates are used to assess how wind strength varies with coronal activity and age for solar-like stars. Mass loss generally increases with activity, but we find evidence that winds suddenly weaken at a certain activity threshold. Very active stars are often observed to have polar starspots, and we speculate that the magnetic field geometry associated with these spots may be inhibiting the winds. Our inferred mass-loss/age relation represents an empirical estimate of the history of the solar wind. This result is important for planetary studies as well as solar/st…
We report H-alpha observations of zeta Tauri, taken between late 2000 and early 2006. Next to extending existing long-term montioring of the disk state of this star we report an intermediate timescale of about 69 days to be present in the V/R variations of the Halpha line. The observational data will be published together with this manuscript.
We provide a quantitative analysis of time-variable phenomena in the photospheric, near-star, and outflow regions of the late-B supergiant (SG) HD 199478. The analysis is based primarily on optical spectroscopic datasets secured between 1999 and 2000 from the Bulgarian NAO, Tartu, and Ritter Observatories. The temporal behaviour of HD 199478 is characterised by three key empirical properties: (i) systematic central velocity shifts in the photospheric absorption lines, including C II and He I, over a characteristic time-scale of abou 20 days; (ii) extremely strong, variable H alpha emission wit…
In this paper we review the present status and implications of H-alpha surveys at various redshifts. With the advent of sensitive wide-format near-infrared detectors on large telescopes, deep and extensive H-alpha surveys are now feasible to redshift z~2.5. The cosmic star formation history can therefore be traced out to this redshift using H-alpha alone, avoiding complications arising from the comparison of different tracers at different redshifts. The H-alpha surveys to date confirm the rapid increase in luminosity density from z=0 out to z=1, and show that this increase flattens off at high…
We present results from multi-band observations in the central region of the cluster NGC6712 with the ESO-Very Large Telescope. Using high resolution images we have identified three UV-excess stars. In particular two of them are within the cluster core, a few arcsec apart: the first object is star "S" which previous studies identified as the best candidate to the optical counterpart to the luminous X-ray source detected in this cluster. The other UV object shows clearcut H-alpha emission and, for this reason, is an additional promising interacting binary candidate (a quiescent LMXB or a CV). T…
We present the first successful demonstration of multi-object near-infrared spectroscopy on high redshift galaxies. Our objective is to address the true star formation history of the universe at z~1, a crucial epoch which some have suggested is the peak of star formation activity. By using H-alpha -the same robust star formation indicator used at low-z - redshifted into the J- and H-bands, we can trace star formation without the systematic uncertainties of different calibrators, or the extreme dust extinction in the rest-UV, which have plagued previous efforts. We are using the instrument CIRP…
The history and progress of DLA research over the past several decades is reviewed here. Larger datasets and deeper surveys, particularly over the last couple of years, have improved our knowledge of the neutral gas content and distribution in the universe at all observable redshifts, including the present epoch. New results on the statistics of DLAs at z<1.65 from our HST-UV surveys are presented and discussed in the context of recent results at z=0 and at high redshift. We find that Omega_{DLA}(z>0) remains roughly constant to within the uncertainties; the z=0 value of the neutral gas mass d…
Remnant planetesimals might have played an important role in reducing the orbital eccentricities of the terrestrial planets after their formation via giant impacts. However, the population and the size distribution of remnant planetesimals during and after the giant impact stage are unknown, because simulations of planetary accretion in the runaway growth and giant impact stages have been conducted independently. Here we report results of direct N-body simulations of the formation of terrestrial planets beginning with a compact planetesimal disk. The initial planetesimal disk has a total mass …
We present abundances for 12 giants in the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy (Sgr dSph) obtained from VLT - UVES spectra. Moving on a short period, polar orbit around the Milky Way, the Sgr dSph is undergoing tidal disruption and will eventually dissolve in the Halo. Our sample is dominated by a metal rich, alpha-element-poor population, indicative of long chemical processing of the dSph gas during a slow, probably bursting star formation history. This population is the most metal-rich ever observed in a Dwarf Galaxy of the Local Group, and has the lowest alpha-element content. Placing the kn…
We report the discovery of accretion disks associated with ~ 13 Myr-old intermediate/low-mass stars in h and chi Persei. Optical spectroscopy of ~ 5000 stars in these clusters and a surrounding halo population reveal 32 A-K stars with H(alpha) emission. Matching these stars with 2MASS and optical photometry yields 25 stars with the highest probability of cluster membership and EW(H(alpha)) > 5 angstroms. Sixteen of these sources have EW(H(alpha)) > 10 angstroms. The population of accreting sources is strongly spectral type dependent: H(alpha) emission characteristic of accretion, especially st…
We study the evolution of nitrogen resulting from a set of spiral and irregular galaxy models computed for a large number of input mass radial distributions and with various star formation efficiencies. We show that our models produce a nitrogen abundance evolution in good agreement with the observational data. In particular, low N/O values for high-redshift objects, such as those obtained for Damped Lyman Alpha galaxies can be obtained with our models simultaneously to higher and constant values of N/O as those observed for irregular and dwarf galaxies, at the same low oxygen abundances $\rm …
We combine the latest observations of disk galaxy photometry and rotation curves at moderate redshift from the FORS Deep Field (FDF) with simple models of chemical enrichment. Our method describes the buildup of the stellar component through infall of gas and allows for gas and metal outflows. In this framework, we keep a minimum number of constraints and we search a large volume of parameter space, looking for the models which best reproduce the photometric observations in the observed redshift range (0.5<z<1). We find the star formation efficiency to correlate well with vMAX so that massive …
We present a model for chemical evolution of damped Ly alpha systems considering production of metals by SNe II and infall associated with hierarchical structure formation. The growth of metallicity in these systems is a reflection of the competition between astration and infall. The apparent late turn-on of these systems is due to the late cut-off of infall. The wide range in [Fe/H] at a given redshift is explained by the range of the times for onset of star formation and the range of the times for infall cessation in different systems. The observed lower bound of [Fe/H] = -3 follows from the…
We use the ACS BViz data from the HUDF and all other deep HST ACS fields (including the GOODS fields) to find large samples of star-forming galaxies at z~4 and z~5 and to extend our previous z~6 sample. These samples contain 4671, 1416, and 627 B, V, and i dropouts, respectively, and reach to extremely low luminosities (0.01-0.04 L* or M(UV)~-16 to -17), allowing us to determine the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF) and faint-end slope alpha at z~4-6 to high accuracy. We find faint-end slopes alpha of -1.73+/-0.05 at z~4, -1.66+/-0.09 at z~5, and -1.74+/-0.16 at z~6 -- suggesting that the…
Studies of the formation and early history of galaxies have been hampered by the difficulties inherent in detecting faint galaxy populations at high redshift. As a consequence, observations at the highest redshifts (3.5 < z < 5) have been restricted to objects that are intrinsically bright. These include quasars, radio galaxies, and some Ly alpha-emitting objects that are very close to (within ~10 kpc) -- and appear to be physically associated with -- quasars. But the extremely energetic processes which make these objects easy to detect also make them unrepresentative of normal (field) galaxie…
We present the results of a stellar population analysis of 30 Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) at z ~ 0.3, previously discovered with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). With a few exceptions, we can accurately fit model spectral energy distributions to these objects, representing the first time this has been done for a large sample of LAEs at z < 3, a gap of ~ 8 Gyr in the history of the Universe. From the 26/30 LAEs which we can fit, we find an age and stellar mass range of 200 Myr - 10 Gyr and 10^9 - 10^11 Msol, respectively. These objects thus appear to be significantly older and mo…
By combining our UVES-VLT spectra of a sample of four damped Ly-alpha systems (DLAs) toward the quasars Q0100+13, Q1331+17, Q2231-00 and Q2343+12 with the existing HIRES-Keck spectra, we covered the total spectral range from 3150 to 10000 A for the four quasars. This large wavelength coverage and the high quality of the spectra allowed us to measure the column densities of up to 21 ions, namely of 15 elements - N, O, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn. Such a large amount of information is necessary to constrain the photoionization and dust depletion effects, two important steps …
We use long-slit spectra obtained with the 6-m telescope BTA (Russian Academy of Sciences) to investigate the history of star formation in the peculiar ring galaxy Arp 10. The radial distributions of quasi-Lick spectral indices are calculated from the observed spectra and are compared with the model spectra, the latter are generated using the Starburst99 population synthesis code. Our model includes an outward propagating density wave which triggers star formation in the gas disk, and an old stellar disk. The metallicity of both old and young stellar populations is a function of radius. We sho…
We have collected a large body of NIR (H band), UV (2000 A) and Halpha measurements of late-type galaxies. These are used, jointly with spectral evolutionary synthesis models, to study the initial mass function (IMF) in the mass range m > 2 Mo. For spirals (Sa-Sd), Magellanic irregulars (Im) and blue compact dwarfs (BCD), our determination is consistent with a Salpeter IMF with an upper mass cutoff M_up = 80 Mo. The history of star formation and the amount of total gas (per unit mass) of galaxies are found to depend primarily on their total masses (as traced by the H band luminosities) and onl…
We use semi-analytic models of structure formation to interpret gravitational lensing measurements of substructure in galaxy cluster cores (R<=250kpc/h) at z=0.2. The dynamic range of the lensing-based substructure fraction measurements is well matched to the theoretical predictions, both spanning f_sub~0.05-0.65. The structure formation model predicts that f_sub is correlated with cluster assembly history. We use simple fitting formulae to parameterize the predicted correlations: Delta_90 = tau_90 + alpha_90 * log(f_sub) and Delta_50 = tau_50 + alpha_50 * log(f_sub), where Delta_90 and Delta_…
We summarize radial velocity studies of selected stars in the old, distant clusters Berkeley 20, Berkeley 21, NGC 2141, Berkeley 29, and Berkeley 31. Three members of M67 were observed similarly, and those velocities compare extremely well with prior measures. We measured the chemical compositions of all six clusters for [Fe/H] as well as abundances of alpha elements, iron-peak elements, and those synthesized in either the s-process or the r-process. For the outer disk, the abundance gradient for [Fe/H] deviates from the trend defined near the solar neighborhood. Rather than declining with inc…
Recent experimental data indicates that the fine structure constant alpha may be varying on cosmological time scales. We consider the possibility that such a variation could be induced by a second order phase transition which occurs at late times (z ~ 1 - 3) and involves a change in the vacuum expectation value (vev) of a scalar with milli-eV mass. Such light scalars are natural in supersymmetric theories with low SUSY breaking scale. If the vev of this scalar contributes to masses of electrically charged fields, the low-energy value of alpha changes during the phase transition. The observatio…
The generalized Chaplygin gas is characterized by the equation of state p = - A/rho^alpha, with alpha > -1 and w > -1. We generalize this model to allow for the cases where alpha < -1 or w < -1. This generalization leads to three new versions of the generalized Chaplygin gas: an early phantom model in which w << -1 at early times and asymptotically approaches w = -1 at late times, a late phantom model with w \approx -1 at early times and w -> - \infty at late times, and a transient model with w \approx -1 at early times and w -> 0 at late times. We consider these three cases as models for dark…
