We report H-alpha observations of zeta Tauri, taken between late 2000 and early 2006. Next to extending existing long-term montioring of the disk state of this star we report an intermediate timescale of about 69 days to be present in the V/R variations of the Halpha line. The observational data will be published together with this manuscript.

We show in this Letter that the spectral details of the FUV radiation fields have a large impact on the chemistry of protoplanetary disks surrounding T Tauri stars. We show that the strength of a realistic stellar FUV field is significantly lower than typically assumed in chemical calculations and that the radiation field is dominated by strong line emission, most notably Lyman alpha radiation. We present detailed estimates of ''type-I'' migration rates for low-mass proto-planets embedded in steady-state T-Tauri alpha-disks, based on Lindblad torque calculations ignoring feedback on the disk. Differences in migration rates for several plausible background disk models are explored and we contrast results obtained using the standard two dimensional formalism of spiral density wave theory with those obtained from a simple treatment of three-dimensional effects. We present radiative transfer models of the circumstellar environment of classical T Tauri stars, concentrating on the formation of the H-alpha emission. The wide variety of line profiles seen in observations are indicative of both inflow and outflow, and we therefore employ a circumstellar structure that includes both magnetospheric accretion and a disc wind. We have discovered T Tauri stars which show startling spectral variability between observations seperated by 20 years. In spectra published by Bouvier & Appenzeller (1992) these objects showed very weak H-alpha emission, broad CaII absorption and so called ``composite spectra'', where the spectral type inferred from the blue region is earlier than that inferred from the red. We have obtained three long-slit, far UV spectra of the pre-main sequence system T Tauri. These HST/STIS spectra show a strong and variable on-source spectrum composed of both fluoresced H_2 and stellar chromospheric lines. Extended H_2 emission is seen up to 10" from the T Tau system. The on-source and extended H_2 are both pumped by H I Lyman alpha. The on-source H_2 is pumped by the red wing of a broad, self-absorbed Ly-alpha line, while the progressions seen in the extended gas are pumped from near line center. We have used the GHRS onboard the HST to obtain Lyman-alpha spectra of the hot white-dwarf (WD) component of the short-period eclipsing DA+dK2 pre-cataclysmic binary V471 Tauri, a member of the Hyades star cluster. Radial velocities of the WD, combined with ground-based measurements of the dK velocities, eclipse timings, and a determination of the dK star's rotational velocity, yield dynamical masses for the components of M(WD)=0.84 and M(dK)=0.93 Msun. We have started a high resolution optical observation program dedicated to the study of chromospheric activity in weak-lined T Tauri stars (WTTS) recently discovered by the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS). We present mean angular diameters for two cepheid variables, alpha Ursae Minoris and zeta Geminorum, determined with the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer (NPOI). We present linear radii for these cepheids and two additional cepheids, delta Cephei and eta Aquilae, previously observed at the NPOI. We find the limb-darkened angular diameter of alpha Ursae Minoris and of zeta Geminorum to be 3.28 +/- 0.02 and 1.55 +/- 0.09 milliarcseconds respectively. We have analyzed GHRS data of eight CTTS and one WTTS. The GHRS data consists of spectral ranges 40 A wide centered on 1345, 1400, 1497, 1550, and 1900 A. These UV spectra show strong SiIV, and CIV emission, and large quantities of sharp (~40 km/s) H2 lines. All the H2 lines belong to the Lyman band and all the observed lines are single peaked and optically thin. The averages of all the H2 lines centroids for each star are negative which may indicate that they come from an outflow. We apply our three dimensional photoionization code to model Wisconsin H-alpha Mapper observations of the H II region surrounding the O9.5V star Zeta Oph. Our models investigate the porosity of the interstellar medium around zeta Oph and the effects of 3D densities on the H-alpha surface brightness and variation in the [N II]/H-alpha line ratio. The Zeta Oph H II region has a well characterized ionizing source, so it is an excellent starting point for 3D models of diffuse ionized gas. We have simulated a population of young spin-powered pulsars and computed the beaming pattern and lightcurves for the three main geometrical models: polar cap emission, two-pole caustic ("slot gap") emission and outer magnetosphere emission. The light curve shapes depend sensitively on the magnetic inclination alpha and viewing angle zeta. Long-baseline interferometric observations obtained with the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer of the H-alpha-emitting envelopes of the Be stars eta Tauri and beta Canis Minoris are presented. To measure interstellar atomic deuterium abundances, we used the Interstellar Medium Absorption Profile Spectrograph (IMAPS) to obtain spectra of gamma2 Vel and zeta Pup over the wavelength interval 930-1150 A at a resolving power of 80,000. The interstellar D I features are resolved and cleanly separated from interstellar H I in the Ly-delta and Ly-epsilon profiles of both sight lines, and also in the Ly-gamma profile of zeta Pup. We report the second study from the FUSE survey of molecular hydrogen in translucent clouds, for the line of sight toward HD 110432. This star lies beyond the Coalsack dark nebula, and with E(B-V) = 0.40, and A_V = 1.32 this line of sight bridges the gap between less extinguished diffuse cloud lines of sight with A_V \sim 1, such as Zeta Oph, and the translucent clouds with A_V \gtrsim 2 such as HD 73882. We present the first K'-band, long-baseline interferometric observations of the northern Be stars gamma Cas, phi Per, zeta Tau, and kappa Dra. The measurements were made with multiple telescope pairs of the CHARA Array interferometer, and in every case the observations indicate that the circumstellar disks of the targets are resolved.
