Using the data taken from Tibet II High Density (HD) Array (1997 February-1999 September) and Tibet-III array (1999 November-2005 November), our previous northern sky survey for TeV $γ-$ray point sources has now been updated by a factor of 2.8 improved statistics. From $0.0^{\circ}$ to $60.0^{\circ}$ in declination (Dec) range, no new TeV $γ-$ray point sources with sufficiently high significance were identified while the well-known Crab Nebula and Mrk421 remain to be the brightest TeV $γ-$ray sources within the field of view of the Tibet air shower array. Based on the currently available data and at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), the flux upper limits for different power law index assumption are re-derived, which are approximately improved by 1.7 times as compared with our previous reported limits.
Results on steady TeV $γ$-ray point source search using data taken from the Tibet HD (Feb. 1997 -- Sep. 1999) and Tibet III (Nov. 1999 -- Oct. 2001) arrays are presented. From $0^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$ in declination, significant excesses from the well-known steady source Crab Nebula and the high state of the flare type source Markarian 421 are observed. Because the levels of significance from other positions are not sufficiently high, 90% confidence level upper limits on the flux are set assuming different power law spectra. To allow crosschecking, two independently developed analyses are u…
We compare the spatial distributions of galaxy clusters in the northern and southern galactic hemispheres, and the Abell and ACO clusters distributions. We perform a statistical (correlation and cluster) analysis of a sample of Abell and ACO galaxy clusters in the southern galactic hemisphere. We compare these results with a symmetric sample at northern galactic latitude taken from Postman et al. (1992). For the northern sample, we substantially confirm the results of Postman et al. We find that the two-point spatial correlation function of northern and southern clusters is comparable, with me…
We review the state of the Onsala blind survey of the galactic plane, searching for new 6.7 GHz methanol masers. We also describe preliminary results of millimeter follow-up observations of the new detections and high resolution observations using the EVN. We conclude that blind surveys are important to complement targeted searches done until now and give the possibility to detect new classes of objects.
This paper contains the fifth part of the Catalog of Variable Stars created from the V-band photometric data collected by 9x9 deg camera of the All Sky Automated Survey. Preliminary list of variable stars found in the fields located between declination 0 and +28 deg of the northern hemisphere is presented. 11,509 stars brighter than V=15 were found to be variable (2,482 eclipsing, 1,397 regularly pulsating, 318 Mira and 7,310 other stars). Automated algorithm taking into account light curve properties (period, fourier coefficients) and other available data (2MASS colors, IRAS fluxes) was appli…
We analyze the sidereal daily variations observed between 1985 and 2006 at Matsushiro, Japan (MAT) and between 1993 and 2005 at Liapootah, Tasmania (LPT). These stations comprise the two hemisphere network (THN) of underground muon detectors in Japan and Australia. Yearly mean harmonic vectors at MAT and LPT are more or less stable without any significant change in phase and amplitude in correlation with either the solar activity- or magnetic-cycles. In this paper, therefore, we analyze the average anisotropy over the entire observation periods, i.e. 1985-2006 for MAT and 1993-2005 for LPT. We…
We report the discovery of a bright (H=12.77) brown dwarf designated SIMP J013656.5+093347. The discovery was made as part of a near-infrared proper motion survey, SIMP (Sondage Infrarouge de Mouvement Propre), which uses proper motion and near-infrared/optical photometry to identify brown dwarf candidates. A low resolution (lambda/dlambda~40) spectrum of this brown dwarf covering the 0.88-2.35 microns wavelength interval is presented. Analysis of the spectrum indicates a spectral type of T2.5+/-0.5. A photometric distance of 6.4+/-0.3 pc is estimated assuming it is a single object. Current ob…
Milagro is a water Cherenkov extensive air shower array that continuously monitors the entire overhead sky in the TeV energy band. The results from an analysis of $\sim$3 years of data (December 2000 through November 2003) are presented. The data has been searched for steady point sources of TeV gamma rays between declinations of 1.1 degrees and 80 degrees. Two sources are detected, the Crab Nebula and the active galaxy Mrk 421. For the remainder of the Northern hemisphere we set 95% C.L. upper limits between 275 and 600 mCrab (4.8-10.5$\times 10^{-12}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$) above 1 TeV for sour…
We present the results of the analysis of neutrino observations by the Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) correlated with photon observations of more than 400 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the Northern Hemisphere from 1997 to 2003. During this time period, AMANDA's effective collection area for muon neutrinos was larger than that of any other existing detector. Based on our observations of zero neutrinos during and immediately prior to the GRBs in the dataset, we set the most stringent upper limit on muon neutrino emission correlated with gamma-ray bursts. Assuming a Waxman-Bahca…
We report the results of a multi-epoch survey of water maser observations at 22.2 GHz with the Medicina radiotelescope from 44 bright rimmed clouds (BRCs) of the northern hemisphere identified by Sugitani et al. (1989) as potential sites of star formation. The data span 16 years of observations and allow to draw conclusions about the maser detection rate in this class of objects. In spite of the relatively high far-infrared luminosities of the embedded sources ($L_{\rm FIR}\ga 10^2$ L$_\odot$), H$_2$O maser emission was detected towards three globules only. Since the occurrence of water masers…
We present the large-scale sidereal anisotropy ofgalactic cosmic-ray intensity in the multi-TeV region observed with the Tibet-IIIair shower array during the period from 1999 through 2003. The sidereal daily variation of cosmic rays observed in this experiment shows an excess of relative intensity around $4\sim7 $ hours local sidereal time, as well as a deficit around 12 hours local sidereal time. While the amplitude of the excess is not significant when averaged over all declinations, the excess in individual declinaton bands becomes larger and clearer as the viewing direction moves toward th…
We summarize results from flux density monitoring campaigns performed with the 100 meter radio-telescope at Effelsberg and the VLA during the past 15 yrs. We briefly discuss some of the statistical properties of the rapid variability from now more than 40 high declination sources, which show Intraday Variability (IDV). In general, IDV is more pronounced for sources with flat radio spectra and compact VLBI structures. The frequency dependence of the variability pattern varies with source and observing time. For 0917+62, we present new VLBI images, which suggest that the variability pattern is m…
In this paper, we investigate the spatial distribution of solar flares in the northern and southern hemisphere of the Sun that occurred during the period 1996 to 2003. This period of investigation includes the ascending phase, the maximum and part of descending phase of solar cycle 23. It is revealed that the flare activity during this cycle is low compared to previous solar cycle, indicating the violation of Gnevyshev-Ohl rule. The distribution of flares with respect to heliographic latitudes shows a significant asymmetry between northern and southern hemisphere which is maximum during the mi…
A list of 705 new Northern Celestial Hemisphere common proper motion pairs as derived from the Second U.S. Naval Observatory CCD Astrograph Catalog is presented, along with details of their separation, motion, brightness and colour. Objects of particular interest are noted, and the use of the catalogue for such work gauged.
This work is the second part of the set of measurements of vsini for A-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (2002). Spectra of 249 B8 to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles in the range 4200--4600 A are used to derive vsini from the frequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sample indicates that measurement error mainly depends on vsini and this relative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% on average. The systematic shift with respect to standard values from Sle…
Sunspot drawings are provided on a regular basis at the Kanzelhoehe Solar Observatory, Austria, and the derived relative sunspot numbers are reported to the Sunspot Index Data Center in Brussels. From the daily sunspot drawings, we derived the northern, R_n, and southern, R_s, relative sunspot numbers for the time span 1975-2000. In order to accord with the International Sunspot Numbers R_i, the R_n and R_s have been normalized to the R_i, which ensures that the relation R_n + R_s = R_i is fulfilled. For validation, the derived R_n and R_s are compared to the international northern and souther…
The three Minkowski functionals and the recently defined length of the skeleton are estimated for the co-added first-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data and compared with 5000 Monte Carlo simulations, based on Gaussian fluctuations with the a-priori best-fit running-index power spectrum and WMAP-like beam and noise properties. Several power spectrum-dependent quantities, such as the number of stationary points, the total length of the skeleton, and a spectral parameter, gamma, are also estimated. While the area and length Minkowski functionals and the length of the skeleton s…
We have analyzed observations of the Acidalia hemisphere of Mars taken by the Hubble Space Telescope's Near-Infrared Camera Multi-Object Spectrograph (HST/NICMOS) during July of 1997 (Ls = 152 degrees, northern Martian summer). The data consist of images at ~60 km/pixel resolution, using both narrow- and medium-band filters specifically selected to allow us to study the hydration state of the Martian surface. Calibration was performed by comparison to Phobos-2 ISM observations of overlapping regions, and atmospheric gas correction was performed by modeling the atmosphere for each pixel using a…
CCD photometry on the uvbyCa system has been obtained for 521 candidate metal-poor stars from the northern hemisphere HK survey of Beers and colleagues. Reddening corrections, classifications of stars by luminosity class, and the derivation of metal abundances based on Stromgren indices m1 and hk are described and presented, along with preliminary spectroscopic estimates of abundance. A number of extremely metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] less than or equal to -2.50 are identified.
This paper describes the automated optical APM identification of radio sources from the Jodrell Bank - VLA Astrometric Survey (JVAS), as used for the search for distant radio-loud quasars. The sample has been used to investigate possible relations between optical and radio properties of flat spectrum radio sources. From the 915 sources in the sample, 756 have an optical APM identification at a red (e) and/or blue (o) plate, resulting in an identification fraction of 83% with a completeness and reliability of 98% and 99% respectively. About 20% are optically identified with extended APM objects …
We estimate the TeV gamma-ray fluxes expected from the population of young pulsars in terms of the self-consistent time dependent hadronic-leptonic model for the high energy processes inside the pulsar wind nebulae. This radiation model bases on the hypothesis of Arons and collaborators who postulate that leptons are accelerated inside the nebulae as a result of resonant scattering on heavy nuclei, which in turn are accelerated in the pulsar wind region or the pulsar inner magnetosphere. Our aim is to find out which nebulae on the nortehrn hemisphere are the best candidates for detection at en…
It is generally believed that pulsars dissipate their rotational energy through powerful winds of relativistic particles. Confinement of these winds leads to the formation of luminous pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) seen across the electromagnetic spectrum in synchrotron and inverse Compton emission. Recently, many new detections have been produced at the highest energies by Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations identifying PWNe as among the most common sources of galactic VHE gamma -ray emission. We report here on the preliminary results of a search for VHE gamma-ray emission towards a sel…
The arrival directions of extremely high energy cosmic rays (EHECR) above $4\times10^{19}$ eV, observed by four surface array experiments in the northern hemisphere, are examined for coincidences from similar directions in the sky. The total number of cosmic rays is 92.A significant number of double coincidences (doublet) and triple coincidences (triplet) are observed on the supergalactic plane within the experimental angular resolution. The chance probability of such multiplets from a uniform distribution is less than 1 % if we consider a restricted region within $\pm 10^{\circ}$ of the superg…
We present the analysis of 65 hours of high speed photometric observations of HD 12098 taken from State Observatory, Naini Tal and Gurushikhar Observatory, Mt.Abu on sixteen nights spanning from November 1999 to November 2000. HD 12098 is the first rapidly oscillating Ap star discovered from the `Naini Tal-Cape survey for northern hemisphere roAp stars'. It is the 32nd in the complete list. HD 12098 exhibits one predominant mode of oscillation at nu_1 = 2.1738 mHz. The second-most significant frequency in our data is at nu_2 = 2.1641 mHz with a 1 cycle/day alias ambiguity. We argue that nu_2 i…
We report J, H and K photometry of 86 stars in 40 fields in the northern hemisphere. The fields are smaller than or comparable to a 4x4 arcmin field-of-view, and are roughly uniformly distributed over the sky, making them suitable for a homogeneous broadband calibration network for near-infrared panoramic detectors. K magnitudes range from 8.5 to 14, and J-K colors from -0.1 to 1.2. The photometry is derived from a total of 3899 reduced images; each star has been measured, on average, 26.0 times per filter on 5.5 nights. Typical errors on the photometry are about 0.012.
In this paper, we have made a statistical analysis of solar H$α$ flares that occurred during the period 1996 to 2005 to investigate their spatial distribution with respect to northern and southern hemispheres of the Sun. The analysis includes a total of 21608 single events. The study shows a significant N$-$S asymmetry which is persistent with the evolution of the solar cycle. The flare activity favors the northern hemisphere in general during the rising and maximum phase of the solar cycle (i.e., in 1997, 1999, and 2000), while the declining phase (i.e., from 2001 to 2005) shows a southern do…
