The Komar integral relation of Einstein gravity is generalized to Lovelock theories of gravity. This includes, in particular, a new boundary integral for the Komar mass in Einstein gravity with a nonzero cosmological constant, which has a finite result for asymptotically AdS black holes, without the need for an infinite background subtraction. Explicit computations of the Komar mass are given for black holes in pure Lovelock gravities of all orders and in general Gauss-Bonnet theories.
In case of the Einstein's gravitation theory and its first order Palatini reformulation, the stress-energy-momentum of gravity has been proved to reduce to the Komar superpotential. We generalize this result to the affine-metric theory of gravity in case of general connections and arbitrary Lagrangian densities invariant under general covariant transformations. In this case, the stress-energy-momentum of gravity comes to the generalized Komar superpotential depending on a Lagrangian density in a precise way.
By bearing the Komar's definition for the mass, together with the entropic origin of gravity in mind, we find the Einstein field equations in $(n+1$)-dimensional spacetime. Then, by reflecting the ($4+1$)-dimensional Einstein equations on the ($3+1$)-hypersurface, we get the Einstein equations onto the $3$-brane. The corresponding energy conditions are also addressed. Since the higher dimensional considerations modify the Einstein field equations in the ($3+1$)-dimensions and thus the energy-momentum tensor, we get a relation for the Komar mass on the brane. In addition, the strongness of this…
We construct Komar-type integrals for theories of gravity of higher order in the Riemann curvature coupled to simple kinds of matter (scalar and vector fields) and we use them to compute Smarr formulae for black-hole solutions in those theories. The equivalence between f(R) and Brans-Dicke theories is used to argue that the dimensionful parameters that appear in scalar potentials must be interpreted as thermodynamical variables ("pressures") and we give a general expression for their conjugate potentials ("volumes"}.
We construct the Komar integral for axion-dilaton gravity using Wald's formalism and momentum maps and we use it to derive a Smarr relation for stationary axion-dilaton black holes. While the Wald-Noether 2-form charge is not invariant under SL(2,R) electric-magnetic duality transformations because Wald's formalism does not account for magnetic charges and potentials, the Komar integral constructed with it turns out to be invariant and, in more general theories, it will be fully symplectic invariant. We check the Smarr formula obtained with the most general family of static axion-dilaton black…
We find a vacuum stationary twisted solution in four-dimensional Einstein gravity. Its frame dragging angular velocities are antisymmetric with respect to the equatorial plane. It possesses a symmetry of joint inversion of time and parity with respect to the equatorial plane. Its Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) mass and angular momentum are zero. It is curved but regular all over the manifold. Its Komar mass and Komar angular momentum are also zero. Its infinite red-shift surface coincides with its event horizon, since the event horizon does not rotate. Furthermore we extend this solution to the m…
The dual Komar mass generalizes the concept of the NUT parameter and is akin to the magnetic charge in electrodynamics. In asymptotically flat spacetimes it coincides with the dual supertranslation charge. The dual mass vanishes identically on Riemannian manifolds in General Relativity unless conical singularities corresponding to Misner strings are introduced. In this paper we propose an alternative way to source the dual mass locally. We show that this can be done by enlarging the phase space of the theory to allow for a violation of the algebraic Bianchi identity using local fields. A minim…

We analyze the impact of the leading quantum gravity effects on the properties of black holes with nonzero angular momentum by performing a suitable renormalization group improvement of the classical Kerr metric within Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG). In particular we explore the structure of the horizons, the ergosphere, and the static limit surfaces as well as the phase space avilable for the Penrose process. The positivity properties of the effective vacuum energy momentum tensor are also discussed and the "dressing" of the black hole's mass and angular momentum are investigated by computing…
With an appropriate choice of parameters, a higher derivative theory of gravity can describe a normal massive sector and a ghost massless sector. We show that, when defined on an asymptotically de Sitter spacetime with Dirichlet boundary conditions, such a higher derivative gravity can provide a framework for a unitary theory of massive gravity in four spacetime dimensions. The resulting theory is free not only of higher derivative ghosts but also of the Boulware-Deser mode.
We calculate the effective Komar conserved quantities for the $N+1$ dimensional charged Myers-Perry spacetime. At the event horizon we derive a new identity $K_{χ^μ}=2ST$ where the left hand side is the Komar conserved quantity corresponding to the null Killing vector $χ^μ$ while in the right hand side $S,~T$ are the black hole entropy and Hawking temperature. From this identity we also derive the generalized Smarr formula connecting the macroscopic parameters $M,~J,~Q$ of the black hole with its surface gravity and horizon area. The consistency of this new formula is established by an indepen…
Quasi-Riemannian theories of gravity have smaller gauge groups acting on the tangent spacetime than the full Lorentz group. Among others, the spatial rotation group can be gauged to obtain spacetime asymmetric gravity with general covariance. We may introduce `spatial' higher-derivative interactions exclusively to improve ultraviolet behavior with unitarity.
The unimodular version of the ghost-free higher derivative gravity is obtained. It is the unimodular reduction of some particular lagrangians quadratic in curvature.
The path integral for higher-derivative quantum gravity with torsion is considered. Applying the methods of two-dimensional quantum gravity, this path integral is analyzed in the limit of conformally self-dual metrics. A scaling law for fixed-volume geometry is obtained.
This short note is devoted to the canonical analysis of the Horava-Lifshitz gravity with mixed derivative terms that was proposed in arXiv:1604.04215. We determine the algebra of constraints and we show that there is one additional scalar degree of freedom with respect to the non-projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity.
Near the event horizon of a black hole, the effective theory is two dimensional conformal theory. Here we show that the holographic modes characterising this underlying conformal symmetry and the basic definition of entropy $S$ in statistical mechanics lead the equipartition law of energy. We also show that $S$ is proportional to the gravity action which suggests the emergent nature of gravity. This is further bolstered by expressing the generalised Smarr formula as a thermodynamic relation, $S = E/ 2T$, where $T$ is the Hawking temperature and $E$ is shown to be the Komar energy.
The structure of counterterms in higher derivative quantum gravity is reexamined. Nontrivial dependence of charges on the gauge and parametrization is established. Explicit calculations of two-loop contributions are carried out with the help of the generalized renormgroup method demonstrating consistency of the results obtained.
Existence and stability analysis of the Kantowski-Sachs type inflationary universe in a higher derivative scalar-tensor gravity theory is studied in details. Isotropic de Sitter background solution is shown to be stable against any anisotropic perturbation during the inflationary era. Stability of the de Sitter space in the post inflationary era can also be realized with proper choice of coupling constants.
We study quantum gravity effects for Myers-Perry black holes assuming that the leading contributions arise from the renormalization group evolution of Newton's coupling. Provided that gravity weakens following the asymptotic safety conjecture, we find that quantum effects lift a degeneracy of higher-dimensional black holes, and dominate over kinematical ones induced by rotation, particularly for small black hole mass, large angular momentum, and higher space-time dimensionality. Quantum-corrected space-times display inner and outer horizons, and show the existence of a black hole of smallest m…
In this work we investigate the ultraviolet behavior of Euclidean four-derivative quantum gravity beyond perturbation theory. In addition to a perturbative fixed point, we find an ultraviolet fixed point that is non-trivial in all couplings and is described by only two free parameters. This result is in line with the asymptotic safety scenario in quantum gravity. In particular, it supports the conjecture that the full theory is described by a finite number of free parameters.
A theory of higher-derivative 2D dilaton gravity which has its roots in the massive higher-spin mode dynamics of string theory is suggested. The divergences of the effective action to one-loop are calculated, both in the covariant and in the conformal gauge. Some technical problems which appear in the calculations are discussed. An interpretation of the theory as a particular D=2 higher-derivative $σ$-model is given. For a specific case of higher-derivative 2D dilaton gravity, which is one loop multiplicatively renormalizable, static configurations corresponding to black holes are shown to exi…
We consider the holographic dual of SQCD in the conformal phase. It is based on a higher derivative gravity theory, which ensures the correct field theory anomalies. This is then related to a six dimensional gravity theory via S^1 compactification. Some speculations are then made about the correspondence, Seiberg duality, and the nature of confinement from a holographic perspective.
In certain Lorentz-covariant higher-derivative field theories of spins < or =1, would-be ultraviolet divergences generate color-singlet poles as infrared divergences. Absence of higher-order poles implies ten-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills with bound-state supergravity, in close analogy with open string theory.
We analyze the perturbative implications of the most general high derivative approach to quantum gravity based on a diffeomorphism invariant local action. In particular, we consider the super-renormalizable case with a large number of metric derivatives in the action. The structure of ultraviolet divergences is analyzed in some detail. We show that they are independent of the gauge fixing condition and the choice of field reparametrization. The cosmological counterterm is shown to vanish under certain parameter conditions. We elaborate on the unitarity problem of high derivative approaches and…
Stability analysis of the Kantowski-Sachs type universe in pure higher derivative gravity theory is studied in details. The non-redundant generalized Friedmann equation of the system is derived by introducing a reduced one dimensional generalized KS type action. This method greatly reduces the labor in deriving field equations of any complicate models. Existence and stability of inflationary solution in the presence of higher derivative terms are also studied in details. Implications to the choice of physical theories are discussed in details in this paper.
We investigate the AdS/CFT correspondence for higher-derivative gravity systems, and develop a formalism in which the generating functional of the boundary field theory is given as a functional that depends only on the boundary values of bulk fields. We also derive a Hamilton-Jacobi-like equation that uniquely determines the generating functional, and give an algorithm calculating the Weyl anomaly. Using the expected duality between a higher-derivative gravity system and N=2 superconformal field theory in four dimensions, we demonstrate that the resulting Weyl anomaly is consistent with the fi…
We discuss the fate of flat directions in higher derivative gravity by studying two explicit examples, namely higher derivative gauged supergravity in five dimensions and higher derivative type IIB string theory in ten dimensions. In the first case, the supersymmetric spinning black hole solution in asymptotically AdS spacetime, found by Gutowski and Reall, is analyzed. In this case we find that the flat direction at the two derivative level is not lifted after addition of higher derivative terms, and as it turns out, this result holds even for non-supersymmetric deformations of the higher der…
We consider the problem of Newtonian singularity in the wide class of higher derivative gravity models, including the ones which are renormalizable and super-renormalizable at the quantum level. The simplest version of the singularity-free theory has four derivatives and is pretty well-known. We argue that in all cases of local higher-derivative theories, when the poles of the propagator are real and simple, the singularities disappear due to the cancellation of contributions from scalar and tensor massive modes.
AdS-hydrodynamics has proven to be a useful tool for obtaining transport coefficients observed in the collective flow of strongly coupled fluids like quark gluon plasma (QGP). Particularly, the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density ${η/ s}$ obtained from elliptic flow measurements can be matched with the computation done in the dual gravity theory. The experimentally observed temperature dependence of ${η/ s}$ requires the study of scalar matter coupled AdS gravity including higher derivative curvature corrections. We obtain the backreaction to the metric for such a matter coupled AdS gr…
Higher derivative bulk gravity (without Riemann tensor square term) admits AdS-Schwarzschild black hole as exact solution. It is shown that induced brane geometry on such background is open, flat or closed FRW radiation dominated Universe. Higher derivative terms contributions appear in the Hawking temperature, entropy and Hubble parameter via the redefinition of 5-dimensional gravitational constant and AdS scale parameter. These higher derivative terms do not destroy the AdS-dual description of radiation represented by strongly-coupled CFT. Cardy-Verlinde formula which expresses cosmological …
We discuss exact renormalization group (RG) in $R^2$-gravity using effective average action formalism. The truncated evolution equation for such a theory on De Sitter background leads to the system of nonperturbative RG equations for cosmological and gravitational coupling constants. Approximate solution of these RG equations shows the appearence of antiscreening and screening behaviour of Newtonian coupling what depends on higher derivative coupling constants.
We consider warped AdS_3 black holes in generic higher derivatives gravity theories in 2+1 dimensions. The asymptotic symmetry group of the phase space containing these black holes is the semi-direct product of a centrally extended Virasoro algebra and an affine u(1) Kac-Moody algebra. Previous works have shown that in some specific theories, the entropy of these black holes agrees with a Cardy-like entropy formula derived for warped conformal field theories. In this paper, we show that this entropy matching continues to hold for the most general higher derivative theories of gravity. We also …
We recalculate the beta functions of higher derivative gravity in four dimensions using the one--loop approximation to an Exact Renormalization Group Equation. We reproduce the beta functions of the dimensionless couplings that were known in the literature but we find new terms for the beta functions of Newton's constant and of the cosmological constant. As a result, the theory appears to be asymptotically safe at a non--Gaussian Fixed Point, rather than perturbatively renormalizable and asymptotically free.
In this work, we study the higher-derivative massive gravity in $D$-dimensional space-time with the mass term arisen due to a 2-brane embedded in a $4D$ Minkowski spacetime. We consider the effect of a resonance mass term from the DGP braneworld model for the higher-derivative massive gravity. Moreover, we add the gravitational Chern-Simons and Ricci-Cotton terms to this model and evaluate the graviton propagator using a basis of Barnes-Rivers spin projectors. Using the obtained propagator, we proceed with discussing the consistency of the model, writing the dispersion relations, and analyzing…
For Gauss-Bonnet gravity and in the context of holography we show how the thermal DC conductivity can be obtained by solving a generalised system of Stokes equations for an auxiliary fluid on a curved black hole horizon. For more general higher derivative theories of gravity coupled to gauge-fields, we also analyse the linearised thermal and electric currents that are produced by DC thermal and electric sources. We show how suitably defined DC transport current fluxes of the dual field theory are given by current fluxes defined at the black horizon.
We discuss lowering the order of the two-dimensional scalar-tensor $R^2$ quantum gravity, by mapping the most general version of the model to a multi-dilaton gravity, which is essentially the sigma-model coupled with Jackiw-Teitelboim-like gravity. In the continuation of our previous research, we calculate the divergent part of the one-loop effective action in a 2D scalar-tensor (dilatonic) gravity with Ra2-term, which belongs to a specific degenerate case and cannot be obtained from the general expression. The corresponding finiteness conditions are found.
The fourth derivative models for two dimensional gravity are shown to be equivalent to the special version of the nonlinear sigma models coupled to 2d quantum gravity. The reduction consists in the introduction of the auxiliary scalar fields and can be performed in an explicit way for both metric and general metric-dilaton cases. In view of this we can evaluate the structure of possible counterterms and show that they contains second derivative structures only. The calculations in the theory with an auxiliary fields require some special procedure to be applied. We perform the explicit calculat…
We consider the theory of higher derivative gravity with non-factorizable Randall-Sundrum type space-time and obtain the metric solutions which characterize the $p$-brane world-volume as a curved or planar defect embedded in the higher dimensions. We consider the string inspired effective actions of the dilatonic Gauss-Bonnet type in the brane background and show its consistency with the RS brane-world scenario and the conformal weight of the dilaton couplings in the string theory with apppropriate choice of Regge slope ($α'$) or Gauss-Bonnet coupling ($α$) or both. We also discuss a time depe…
We survey recent studies of Gauss-Bonnet gravity and its dual conformal field theories, including their relation to the violation of the Kovtun-Starinets-Son viscosity bound. Via holography, we can also study properties such as microcausality and unitarity of boundary field theory duals. Such studies in turn supply constraints on bulk gravitational theories, consigning some of them to the swampland.
Two derivative Jackiw Teitelboim gravity theory captures the near horizon dynamics of higher dimensional near extremal black holes, which is governed by a Schwarzian action at the boundary in the near horizon region. The partition function corresponding to this boundary action correctly gives the statistical entropy of the near extremal black hole. In this paper, we study the thermodynamics of spherically symmetric four dimensional near extremal black holes in presence of arbitrary perturbative four derivative corrections. We find that the near horizon dynamics is again captured by a JT like a…
In AdS/CFT, the holographic Weyl anomaly computation relates the a-anomaly coefficient to the properties of the bulk action at the UV fixed point. This universal behavior suggests the possibility of a holographic c-theorem for the a-anomaly under flows to the IR. We prove such a c-theorem for higher curvature Lovelock gravity, where the bulk equations of motion remain second order. We also explore f(R) gravity as a toy model where higher derivatives cannot be avoided. In this case, monoticity of the flow requires an additional condition related to the higher derivative nature of the theory. Th…
Kaluza-Klein approach in an N(=1+3+D)-dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker type space is often adopted in the literature. We derive a compact expression for the Friedmann equation in a (1+3+D)-dimensional space. The redundancy of the associated field equations due to the Bianchi identity is analyzed. We also study the dilaton gravity theory with higher-derivative gravitational couplings. It turns out that higher-order terms will not affect the Friedmann equation in a constant flat internal space. This is true only for the flat-De Sitter external space. The inflationary solution in an induced…
We discuss corrections to the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density $η/s$ in higher-derivative gravity theories. Generically, these theories contain ghost modes with Planck-scale masses. Motivated by general considerations about unitarity, we propose new boundary conditions for the equations of motion of the graviton perturbations that force the amplitude of the ghosts modes to vanish. We analyze explicitly four-derivative perturbative corrections to Einstein gravity which generically lead to four-derivative equations of motion, compare our choice of boundary conditions to previous propo…
The "conformal mass prescriptions" were used recently to calculate the mass of spacetimes in higher dimensional and higher curvature theories of gravity. These definitions are closely related to Komar integrals for spacetimes that are conformally flat at great distances from the sources. We derive these relations without using the conformal infinity formalism.
We investigate some classical and quantum aspects of a general class of higher derivative theories of gravity. We propose a generalized version of the so-called Teyssandier gauge condition and we investigative its implications on the linearized field equations. An exhaustive investigation on the particle spectra is done, including a discussion on the appearance of ghost-like particles. We investigate the UV properties and we determine the power-counting renormalizability of the theory. Finally we probe a conjecture which relates renormalizability with the cancellation of Newtonian singularitie…
In this work, we analyze a gravity model with higher derivatives including a CPT-even Lorentz-violating term. In principle, the model could be a low-energy limit of a Lorentz-invariant theory presenting the violation of Lorentz symmetry as a consequence of a spontaneous symmetry-breaking mechanism if a decoupling between the metric and the Nambu-Goldstone modes is assumed. We have set up a convenient operator basis for the expansion of wave operators for symmetric second-rank tensors in the presence of a background vector. By using this set of operators, the particle content is obtained, and i…
Using the revised Komar-Tomimatsu approach, we derive Smarr mass formulas for stationary axisymmetric solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations containing line singularities (defects) on the polar axis. In terms of the rod structure associated with Weyl representation of the metric, the horizons and the defects are formally similar up to differences due to their timelike/spacelike character. We derive (previously unknown or incorrect) horizon and global Smarr formulas in presence of a Newman-Unti-Tamburino (NUT) parameter. To avoid the divergence of the Komar angular momentum of semi-infinit…
Infinite derivative theory of gravity is a modification to the general theory of relativity. Such modification maintains the massless graviton as the only true physical degree of freedom and avoids ghosts. Moreover, this class of modified gravity can address classical singularities. In this thesis some essential aspects of an infinite derivative theory of gravity are studied. Namely, we considered the Hamiltonian formalism, where the true physical degrees of freedom for infinite derivative scalar models and infinite derivative gravity are obtained. Furthermore, the Gibbons-Hawking-York boundar…
This work explores an alternative solution to the problem of renormalizability in Einstein gravity. In the proposed approach, Einstein gravity is transformed into the renormalizable theory of four-derivative gravity by applying a field redefinition containing an infinite number of higher derivatives. It is also shown that the current-current amplitude is invariant with the field redefinition, and thus the unitarity of Einstein gravity is preserved.
We discuss the possible existence of new generic vacuum solutions of Robertson-Walker form in higher derivative gravity theories in four dimensions. These solutions illustrate how a dynamical coupling between very low and very high frequency modes can occur when the cosmological constant is small.
In this paper we establish the correspondence between ghost-free bimetric theory and a class of higher derivative gravity actions, including conformal gravity and New Massive Gravity. We also characterize the relation between the respective equations of motion and classical solutions. We illustrate that, in this framework, the spin-2 ghost of higher derivative gravity is an artifact of the truncation to a 4-derivative theory. The analysis also gives a relation between the proposed partially massless (PM) bimetric theory and conformal gravity, showing, in particular, the equivalence of their eq…
We study the non-perturbative renormalization group flow of higher-derivative gravity employing functional renormalization group techniques. The non-perturbative contributions to the $β$-functions shift the known perturbative ultraviolet fixed point into a non-trivial fixed point with three UV-attractive and one UV-repulsive eigendirections, consistent with the asymptotic safety conjecture of gravity. The implication of this transition on the unitarity problem, typically haunting higher-derivative gravity theories, is discussed.
