We used the CSO 10.4 meter telescope to image the 350 micron and 450 micron continuum and CO J=6-5 line emission of the IRAS 20126+4104 clump. The continuum and line observations show that the clump is isolated over a 4 pc region and has a radius of ~ 0.5 pc. Our analysis shows that the clump has a radial density profile propto r ^{-1.2} for r <~ 0.1 pc and has propto r^{-2.3} for r >~ 0.1 pc which suggests the inner region is infalling, while the infall wave has not yet reached the outer region. Assuming temperature gradient of r^{-0.35}, the power law indices become propto r ^{-0.9} for r < ~0.1 pc and propto r^{-2.0} for r >~ 0.1 pc. Based on a map of the flux ratio of 350micron/450micron, we identify three distinct regions: a bipolar feature that coincides with the large scale CO bipolar outflow; a cocoon-like region that encases the bipolar feature and has a warm surface; and a cold layer outside of the cocoon region. The complex patterns of the flux ratio map indicates that the clump is no longer uniform in terms of temperature as well as dust properties. The CO emission near the systemic velocity traces the dense clump and the outer layer of the clump shows narrow line widths (< ~3 km/s). The clump has a velocity gradient of ~ 2 km/s pc^{-1}, which we interpret as due to rotation of the clump, as the equilibrium mass (~ 200 Msun) is comparable to the LTE mass obtained from the CO line. Over a scale of ~ 1 pc, the clump rotates in the opposite sense with respect to the >~ 0.03 pc disk associated with the (proto)star. This is one of four objects in high-mass and low-mass star forming regions for which a discrepancy between the rotation sense of the envelope and the core has been found, suggesting that such a complex kinematics may not be unusual in star forming regions.
Arcsecond-resolution spectral observations toward the protobinary system IRAS 16293-2422 at 344 and 354 GHz were conducted using the Submillimeter Array. Complex organic molecules such as CH3OH and HCOOCH3 were detected. Together with the rich organic inventory revealed, it clearly indicates the existence of two, rather than one, compact hot molecular cores (smaller than or equal to 400 AU in radius) associated with each of the protobinary components identified by their dust continuum emission in the inner star-forming core.
Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of the high-mass star-forming region IRAS 18089-1732 in the 1 mm and 850 $μ$m band with 1 GHz bandwidth reveal a wealth of information. We present the observations of 34 lines from 16 different molecular species. Most molecular line maps show significant contributions from the outflow, and only few molecules are confined to the inner core. We present and discuss the molecular line observations and outline the unique capabilities of the SMA for future imaging line surveys at high spatial resolution.
The Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST) operated successfully during a 100-hour flight from northern Sweden in June 2005 (BLAST05). As part of the calibration and pointing procedures, several compact sources were mapped, including solar system, Galactic, and extragalactic targets, specifically Pallas, CRL 2688, LDN 1014, IRAS 20126+4104, IRAS 21078+5211, IRAS 21307+5049, IRAS 22134+5834, IRAS 23011+6126, K3-50, W 75N, and Mrk 231. One additional source, Arp 220, was observed and used as our primary calibrator. Details of the overall BLAST05 calibration procedure are di…
We present submillimeter continuum maps at 450 and 850 microns of a 12 x 8 arcminute region of the NGC 7538 high-mass star-forming region, made using the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We used an automated clump-finding algorithm to identify 67 clumps in the 450 micron image and 77 in the 850 micron image. Contrary to previous studies, we find a positive correlation between high spectral index, alpha, and high submillimeter flux, with the difference being accounted for by different treatments of the error beam. We interpret the higher sp…
We present high spatial resolution Submillimeter Array observations and supplementary single-dish photometry of the molecular gas and dust around IRAS 04158+2805, a young source with spectral type M5-M6 in the Taurus star-forming region. A bright, highly elongated dust structure that extends 8" (~1120 AU) in diameter is revealed in a 883 micron thermal continuum image. This emission geometry is in good agreement with optical observations that show a similar structure in absorption, aligned perpendicular to bipolar scattered light nebulae. However, the interferometric data also clearly demonstr…
We have mapped the proto-binary source IRAS 16293-2422 in CO 2-1, 13CO 2-1, and CO 3-2 with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). The maps with resolution of 1".5-5" reveal a single small scale (~3000 AU) bipolar molecular outflow along the east-west direction. We found that the blueshifted emission of this small scale outflow mainly extends to the east and the redshifted emission to the west from the position of IRAS 16293A. A comparison with the morphology of the large scale outflows previously observed by single-dish telescopes at millimeter wavelengths suggests that the small scale outflow may be…
We investigate the mass function of cold, dusty clumps in 11 low- and high-mass star-forming regions. Using a homogeneous fitting technique, we analyze the shape of each region's clump mass function and examine the commonalities among them. We find that the submillimeter continuum clump mass function in low-mass star-forming regions is typically best fit by a lognormal distribution, while that in high-mass star-forming regions is better fit by a double power law. A single power law clump mass distribution is ruled out in all cases. Fitting all of the regions with a double power law, we find th…
We have mapped an approximately 5.5 by 5.5 pc portion of the M17 massive star-forming region in both 850 and 450 micron dust continuum emission using the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The maps reveal more than 100 dusty clumps with deconvolved linear sizes of 0.05--0.2 pc and masses of 0.8--120 solar masses, most of which are not associated with known mid-infrared point sources. Fitting the clump mass function with a double power law gives a mean power law exponent of alpha_high = -2.4 +/- 0.3 for the high-mass power law, consist…
The Submillimeter Array has opened a new window to study the innermost warm and dense regions of the envelopes and disks around deeply embedded protostars. This paper presents high-angular resolution (< 2'') submillimeter observations of the class 0 young stellar object NGC1333-IRAS2A. Dust continuum emission and lines of complex organic molecules such as CH3OCH3 and CH3OCHO, high excitation CH3OH transitions, deuterated methanol CH3OD as well as lines of CO, HCN, H13CN, SO and SO2 are detected on < 200 AU scales. The observations are interpreted using detailed radiative transfer models of the…
We present the results of 450 and 850 micron continuum mapping of the HII region KR 140 using the SCUBA instrument on the JCMT. KR 140 is a small (5.7 pc diameter) HII region at a distance of 2.3+/-0.3 kpc. Five of the six IRAS point sources near KR 140 were mapped in this study. Our analysis shows that two of these IRAS sources are embedded late B type stars lying well outside the HII region, two are a part of the dust shell surrounding the HII region, and one is the combined emission from an ensemble of smaller sources unresolved by IRAS. We have discovered a number of relatively cold submil…
Using the ISOPHOT Serendipity Survey (ISOSS) at 170um a sample of galactic star-forming regions exhibiting very cold dust temperatures (< 20 K) and high masses (> 100 M_sun) has been established. We characterise the star-forming content of five regions that were selected as potential sites for early stage high-mass star formation using SCUBA (JCMT) and Spitzer observations. In every region we identify one to four submillimeter clumps with projected sizes between 0.1 and 0.4 pc. The dust temperatures range from 11.6 to 21.3 K and the estimated clump masses are 2 to 166 M_sun. Towards the majori…
(Abridged) With the SMA we have made high angular-resolution (~1" = 160 AU) observations of the protobinary system IRAS 16293-2422 in the J = 4-3 lines of HCN and HC^15N, and in the continuum at 354.5 GHz. The HCN (4-3) line was also observed using the JCMT to supply missing short spacing information. Submillimeter continuum emission is detected from the individual binary components with a separation of ~5". The HC^15N (4-3) emission has revealed a compact (~500 AU) flattened structure (P.A. = -16 degree) associated with Source A, and shows a velocity gradient along the projected minor axis, w…
This paper presents a large spectral line and continuum survey of 8 deeply embedded, low-mass protostellar cores using the Submillimeter Array. Each source was observed in high excitation lines of some of the most common molecular species, CO, HCO+, CS, SO, H2CO, CH3OH and SiO. Line emission from 11 species originating from warm and dense gas have been imaged at high angular resolution (1-3"; typically 200-600 AU) together with continuum emission at 230 GHz (1.3 mm) and 345 GHz (0.8 mm). Compact continuum emission is observed for all sources which likely originates in marginally optically thic…
The IRAS source 03256+3055 in the NGC 1333 star forming region is associated with extended sub-millimeter emission of complex morphology, showing multiple clumps. One of these is found to coincide with the driving source of a bipolar jet of S-shaped morphology seen in the emission lines of H_alpha and [SII] as well as in the H2 emission lines in the K-band. Detailed images of the driving source at the wavelengths of H_alpha and [SII] and in the I, J, H, and K bands as well as a K-band spectrum and polarimetry are discussed. The near-infrared morphology is characterized by a combination of line…
We report a dual-band observation at 223 and 654 GHz (460 micron) toward an ultracompact (UC) HII region, G240.31+0.07, with the Submillimeter Array. With a beam size of 1"5 X 0"8, the dust continuum emission is resolved into two clumps, with clump A coincident well with an H2O maser and the UC HII region. The newly discovered clump, B, about 1"3 (~8.3 X 10^3 AU) to the southwest of clump A, is also associated with H2O masers and may be a more recent star-forming site. The continuum flux densities imply an opacity spectral index of β= 1.5 +- 0.3, suggestive of a value lower than the canonical …
Two ultracompact H II regions (IRAS 19181+1349 and 20178+4046) and one compact molecular clump (20286+4105) have been observed at far infrared wavelengths using the TIFR 1 m balloon-borne telescope and at mid infrared wavelengths using ISO. Far infrared observations have been made simultaneously in two bands with effective wavelengths of ~ 150 and ~ 210 micron, using liquid 3He cooled bolometer arrays. ISO observations have been made in seven spectral bands using the ISOCAM instrument; four of these bands cover the emission from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. In addition, IRA…
High angular resolution far-infrared observations at 143 & 185 \micron, using the TIFR 1-m balloon borne telescope, are presented for two Galactic star forming complexes associated with IRAS 00494+5617 and 05327-0457. The latter map also reveals the cold dust in OMC-3. The HIRES processed IRAS maps at 12, 25, 60 & 100 micron have also been presented for comparison. Both these regions are illuminated at the edges by high mass stars with substantial UV flux. The present study is aimed at quantifying the role of the nearby stars vis-a-vis embedded young stellar objects in the overall heating of th…
We present the first set of detailed molecular line maps of the region associated with the giant Herbig-Haro flow HH 300, from the young star IRAS 04239+2436. Our results indicate that the red lobe of the HH 300 flow is depositing a fair amount of momentum and kinetic energy over a notable volume of its host dark cloud. This makes HH 300 a key player in the evolution and fate of its parent cloud. The redshifted molecular outflow lobe of HH 300 is 1.1 pc long and 0.3 pc wide, and has a very clumpy structure. The density, velocity, and momentum distributions in the outflow indicate that the obse…
We present centimeter and millimeter observations of gas and dust around IRAS 21391+5802, an intermediate-mass source embedded in the core of IC 1396N. Continuum observations from 3.6 cm to 1.2 mm are used to study the embedded objects and overall distribution of the dust, while molecular line observations of CO, CS, and CH3OH are used to probe the structure and chemistry of the outflows in the region. The continuum emission at centimeter and millimeter wavelengths has been resolved into three sources separated about 15 arcsec from each other, and with one of them, BIMA 2, associated with IRAS…
We present a SCUBA submillimetre (450 & 850 micron) survey of the environment of 105 IRAS point sources, selected from the Wood & Churchwell (1989a) and Kurtz, Churchwell & Wood (1994) radio ultracompact (UC) HII region surveys. We detected a total of 155 sub-mm clumps associated with the IRAS point sources and identified three distinct types of object: ultracompact cm-wave sources that are not associated with any sub-mm emission (sub-mm quiet objects), sub-mm clumps that are associated with ultracompact cm-wave sources (radio-loud clumps); and sub-mm clumps that are not associated with any kn…
We have resolved the ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG), IRAS 09111-1007, with the new 350 micron-optimised Second Generation Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera (SHARC II) and present the first submillimetre fluxes and images for the system. IRAS 09111-1007 comprises two interacting luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) with a projected nuclear separation of 39 kpc. The Western galaxy is roughly four times more luminous in the submillimetre than its Eastern counterpart. It is an extremely bright LIRG with an AGN. The classification of the Eastern source is uncertain: it could be a Se…
The Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory (AST/RO) has been used to observe 78 of the IRAS point sources identified by Bronfman et al. (1996) as likely ultracompact HII regions. Results for the CO(4-3) line at 461.041GHz are presented. The 74 sources detected are bright and in many cases compact, making them potentially suitable as pointing calibrators for single dish submillimeter telescopes.
We have mapped the dust continuum emission from the molecular cloud covering a region of 28pcx94pc associated with the well-known HII region RCW 106 at 1.2 mm using SIMBA on SEST. The observations, having an HPBW of 24" (0.4 pc), reveal 95 clumps. Owing to the higher sensitivity to colder dust and higher angular resolution the present observations identify new emission features and also show that most of the IRAS sources in this region consist of multiple dust emission peaks. The detected millimeter sources (MMS) include on one end the exotic MMS5 (associated with IRAS 16183-4958, one of the b…
Magnetic fields are believed to play a crucial role in the process of star formation. We compare high-angular resolution observations of the submillimeter polarized emission of NGC 1333 IRAS 4A, tracing the magnetic field around a low-mass protostar, with models of the collapse of magnetized molecular cloud cores. Assuming a uniform dust alignment efficiency, we computed the Stokes parameters and synthetic polarization maps from the model density and magnetic field distribution by integrations along the line-of-sight and convolution with the interferometric response. The synthetic maps are in …
Star formation at earlier cosmological times takes place in an interstellar medium with low metallicity. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is ideally suited to study star formation in such an environment. The physical and chemical state of the ISM in a star forming environment can be constrained by observations of submm and FIR spectral lines of the main carbon carrying species, CO, CI and CII, which originate in the surface layers of molecular clouds illuminated by the UV radiation of the newly formed, young stars. We present high-angular resolution sub-millimeter observations in the N159W reg…
We present results from a 2300 arcmin^2 survey of the Orion A molecular cloud at 450 and 850 micron using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The region mapped lies directly south of the OMC1 cloud core and includes OMC4, OMC5, HH1/2, HH34, and L1641N. We identify 71 independent clumps in the 850 micron map and compute size, flux, and degree of central concentration in each. Comparison with isothermal, pressure-confined, self-gravitating Bonnor-Ebert spheres implies that the clumps have internal temperatures T_d ~ 22 +/- K and surface pre…
We present arcsecond-scale mid-ir photometry (in the 10.5 micron N band and at 24.8 microns), and low resolution spectra in the N band (R~100) of a candidate high mass protostellar object (HMPO) in IRAS 18151-1208 and of two HMPO candidates in IRAS 20343+4129, IRS 1 and IRS 3. In addition we present high resolution mid-ir spectra (R~80000) of the two HMPO candidates in IRAS 20343+4129. These data are fitted with simple models to estimate the masses of gas and dust associated with the mid-ir emitting clumps, the column densities of overlying absorbing dust and gas, the luminosities of the HMPO …
We present a spatially resolved 894 micron map of the circumstellar disk of the Butterfly star in Taurus (IRAS 04302+2247), obtained with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). The predicted and observed radial brightness profile agree well in the outer disk region, but differ in the inner region with an outer radius of ~80-120 AU. In particular, we find a local minimum of the radial brightness distribution at the center, which can be explained by an increasing density / optical depth combined with the decreasing vertical extent of the disk towards the center. Our finding indicates that young circumst…
We present molecular line and submillimeter dust continuum observations of the Lynds 870 cloud in the vicinity of IRAS 20231+3440. Two submillimeter cores, SMM1 and SMM2, are identified mapping the 870 micron dust continuum and ammonia emission. The total molecular mass is ~70-110 solar mass. The northern core is warmer and denser than the southern one. Molecular outflows are discovered in both cores. In the northern one a significant amount of low velocity (1.3-2.8 km/s) outflowing gas is found, that is hidden in the relatively broad CO lines but that is revealed by the narrower HCO+ spectra.…
We have mapped with the French submillimeter balloon-borne telescope ProNaOS the thermal emission of the dust in the M42 Orion Nebula. The map obtained is 50' by 40' with an angular resolution of about 3' in the four efficient wavelengths 200 $\mic$, 260 $\mic$, 360 $\mic$ and 580 $\mic$. The temperature and index we obtain are highly variable within the studied region: the temperature varies from 12 K to 70 K, and the spectral index from 1.1 to 2.2. The statistical analysis of the temperature and spectral index spatial distribution in this region, as well as in the other regions mapped by Pro…
We report high angular-resolution (~1") CO J=3--2 interferometric mapping, using the Submillimeter Array (SMA), of IRAS22036+5306 (I22036), a bipolar pre-planetary nebula (PPN) with knotty jets discovered in our HST SNAPshot survey of young PPNs. In addition, we have obtained supporting lower-resolution (~10") CO and 13CO J=1-0 observations with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) interferometer, as well as optical long-slit echelle spectra at the Palomar Observatory. The CO J=3-2 observations show the presence of a very fast (~220 km/s), highly collimated, massive (0.03 Msun) bipolar ou…
We present here the continuum submillimeter maps of the molecular cloud around the M42 Nebula in the Orion region. These have been obtained in four wavelength bands (200, 260, 360 and 580 microns) with the ProNaOS two meter balloon-borne telescope. The area covered is 7 parsecs wide (50 arcmin at a distance of 470 pc) with a spatial resolution of about 0.4 parsec. Thanks to the high sensitivity to faint surface brightness gradients, we have found several cold condensations with temperatures ranging from 12 to 17 K, within 3 parsecs of the dense ridge. The statistical analysis of the temperatur…
Recent FIR/submm deep surveys revealed large number of ULIGs, which are proposed to lie at z>1, and in normally interacting systems with very dusty environments. We discussed in a previous paper that a population with a fast evolving infrared burst phase triggered by gas rich mergers at z~1 interpreted successfully the steep slope of IRAS 60um counts, leaving still a reasonable CIRB level at this wavelength. To extend the model to mid- and far-IR, we adopt a template SED as typical for nearby IR bright galaxies, such as Arp220. We construct the SED for the starburst mergers at z~1 by a simple …
We present deep images of dust continuum emission at 450, 800, and 850 micron of the dark cloud LDN 1689N which harbors the low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) IRAS 16293-2422A and B (I16293A and I16293B) and the cold prestellar object I16293E. Toward the positions of I16293A and E we also obtained spectra of CO-isotopomers and deep submillimeter observations of chemically related molecules with high critical densities. To I16293A we report the detection of the HDO 1_01 - 0_00 and H2O 1_10 - 1_01 ground-state transitions as broad self-reversed emission profiles with narrow absorption, and a …
Results of submillimeter (450 micron and 850 micron) observations of a nearby dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 4214 with SCUBA on JCMT are presented. We aimed at examining the far-infrared to submillimeter spectral energy distribution (SED) and properties of dust thermal emission in a low metallicity environment by choosing NGC 4214 of which gas metallicity (log O/H + 12) is 8.34. We found that the SED is quite similar to those of IRAS bright galaxies sample (IBGS) which are local bright star-forming galaxies with metallicity comparable to the solar abundance. A dust temperature and an emissivity in…
New far-infrared and submillimeter data are used to solidify and to extend to long wavelengths the empirical calibration of the infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) of normal star-forming galaxies. As was found by Dale et al. (2001), a single parameter family, characterized by f_nu(60 microns)/f_nu(100 microns), is adequate to describe the range of normal galaxy spectral energy distributions observed by IRAS and ISO from 3 to 100 microns. However, predictions based on the first generation models at longer wavelengths (122 to 850 microns) are increasingly overluminous compared to the dat…
We present far-infrared, submillimetre, and millimetre observations of bright IRAS sources and outflows that are associated with massive CS clumps in the Monoceros OB1 Dark Cloud. Individual star-forming cores are identified within each clump. We show that combining submillimetre maps, obtained with SCUBA on the JCMT, with HIRES-processed and modelled IRAS data is a powerful technique that can be used to place better limits on individual source contributions to the far-infrared flux in clustered regions. Three previously categorized "Class I objects" are shown to consist of multiple sources in…
We report the results of a Submillimeter Array (SMA) interferometric observation of 21-micron source IRAS 07134+1005 in the CO J=3-2 line. In order to determine the morpho-kinematic properties of the molecular envelope of the object, we constructed a model using the Shape software to model the observed CO map. We find that the molecular gas component of the envelopes can be interpreted as a geometrically thick expanding torus with an expanding velocity of 8 km/s. The inner and outer radii of the torus determined by fitting Shape models are 1.2" and 3.0", respectively. The inner radius is consi…
Our view of galaxy evolution has been dramatically enhanced by the recent deep field submm surveys carried out with the SCUBA camera on the JCMT. SCUBA has discovered a population of luminous infrared galaxies at redshifts ~1-4 that emit most of their energy at far-IR/submm wavelengths. The cumulative surface density of submm sources (~10,000 per sq.deg with S_850 > 1 mJy) appears to be sufficient to account for nearly all of the 850 micron extragalactic background. The SCUBA sources are plausibly the high-redshift counterparts of more local (z < 1) luminous infrared galaxies that have been id…
Investigating in more detail the previously suggested massive disk scenario for the High-Mass Protostellar Object IRAS18089-1732, we observed the source in the 860mum band with the Submillimeter Array in various spectral lines and the submm continuum emission at (sub-)arcsecond spatial resolution. Fifty spectral lines from eighteen different species spanning upper level energy states between 17 and 747K were detected. One of the assumed best tracers for massive disks, CH3CN, is optically thick and does not allow a further disk investigation. However, the complex molecule HCOOCH3 appears optica…
We present first and preliminary submillimeter continuum images of the Galactic Center region obtained with the new Caltech Submillimeter Observatory facility camera SHARC II. The instrument allows 350 micron observations with unprecedented sensitivity and instantaneous spatial coverage. The stability of the SHARC II detectors combined with the large number of available pixels allows a non-differential scanning mode that does not require the observation of a reference off-source position. Here we present large-scale 350 micron dust continuum images from the Sgr A and Sgr C regions, as well as …
We report on 450- and 850-micron observations of the interacting galaxy pair, VV114E+W (IC1623), taken with the SCUBA camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, and near-infrared observations taken with UFTI on the UK Infrared Telescope. The system VV114 is in an early stage of a gas-rich merger. We detect submillimeter (sub-mm) emission extended over 30 arcsec (12 kpc) and find a good correlation between the spatial distribution of the sub-mm and CO emission. Both the CO and sub-mm emission peak near the reddest region of VV114E and extend toward VV114W. The bulk of the sub-mm emission resi…
We present a survey of molecular gas in the J = 1 -> 0 transition of 12CO towards the IRAS Vela shell. The shell, previously identified from IRAS maps, is a ring-like structure seen in the region of the Gum Nebula. We confirm the presence of molecular gas associated with some of the infrared point sources seen along the Shell. We have studied the morphology and kinematics of the gas and conclude that the shell is expanding at the rate of ~ 13 km/s from a common center. We go on to include in this study the Southern Dark Clouds seen in the region. The distribution and motion of these objects fi…
We present results of submillimeter observations of a low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) condensation in the Cederblad 110 region of the Chamaeleon I dark cloud with Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment. Our HCO+(J=4-3) map reveals a dense molecular gas with an extent of ~ 0.1 pc, which is a complex of two envelopes associated with class I sources Ced110 IRS4 and IRS11 and a very young object Cha-MMS1. The other two class I sources in this region, IRS6 and NIR89, are located outside the clump and have no extended HCO+ emission. HCO+ abundance is calculated to be 2.6 x 10^{-10} for MMS…
The James Clerk Maxwell Telescope has been used to obtain submillimeter and millimeter continuum photometry of a sample of 30 IRAS sources previously studied in molecular lines and centimeter radio continuum. All the sources have IRAS colours typical of very young stellar objects (YSOs) and are associated with dense gas. In spite of their high luminosities (L>10000 solar units), only ten of these sources are also associated with a radio counterpart. In 17 cases we could identify a clear peak of millimeter emission associated with the IRAS source, while in 9 sources the millimeter emission was …
We present the results of an 850 micron JCMT/SCUBA survey for dust around 13 nearby solar mass stars. The dust mass sensitivity ranged from 0.005 to 0.16 Earth masses. Three sources were detected in the survey, one of which (HD 107146) has been previously reported. One of the other two submillimeter sources, HD 104860, was not detected by IRAS and is surrounded by a cold, massive dust disk with a dust temperature and mass of Tdust = 33 K and Mdust = 0.16 Mearth. The third source, HD 8907, was detected by IRAS and ISO at 60-87 microns, and has a dust temperature and mass Tdust = 48 K and Mdust …
While most sources above 10^5Lsun have already formed an Ultracompact HII region (UCHII), this is not necessarily the case for sources of lower luminosity. Characterizing sources in the transition phase, i.e., very luminous objects without any detectable free-free emission, is important for a general understanding of massive star formation. Therefore, we observed the luminous High-Mass Protostellar Object IRAS23151+5912 with the Submillimeter Array at 875mum in the submm continuum and spectral line emission at sub-arcsecond resolution. The 875mum submm continuum emission has been resolved into…
We present results from a survey of a 1300 arcmin^2 region of the Orion B South molecular cloud, including NGC 2024, NGC 2023, and the Horsehead Nebula (B33), obtained using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Submillimeter continuum observations at 450 microns and 850 microns are discussed. Using an automated algorithm, 57 discrete emission features (``clumps'') are identified in the 850 micron map. The physical conditions within these clumps are investigated under the assumption that the objects are in quasi-hydrostatic equilibrium. The…
Since most high- and intermediate-mass protostars are at great distance and form in clusters, high linear resolution observations are needed to investigate their physical properties. To study the gas in the innermost region around the protostars in the proto-cluster IRAS 05358+3543, we observed the source in several transitions of methanol and other molecular species with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer and the Submillimeter Array, reaching a linear resolution of 1100 AU. We determine the kinetic temperature of the gas around the protostars through an LVG and LTE analysis of their molecular…
In order to elucidate the nature of the brightest infrared sources associated with IRAS 20343+4129, IRS1 and IRS3, we observed with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) the 1.3 mm continuum and CO(2-1) emission of the region. Faint millimeter dust continuum emission was detected toward IRS1, and we derived an associated gas mass of ~0.8 Msun. The IRS1 spectral energy distribution agrees with IRS1 being an intermediate-mass Class I source of about 1000 Lsun, whose circumstellar material is producing the observed large infrared excess. We have discovered a high-velocity CO bipolar outflow in the east-w…
