The field theoretic action for gravitational interactions in d+2 dimensions is constructed in the formalism of 2T-physics. General Relativity in d dimensions emerges as a shadow of this theory with one less time and one less space dimensions. The gravitational constant turns out to be a shadow of a dilaton field in d+2 dimensions that appears as a constant to observers stuck in d dimensions. If elementary scalar fields play a role in the fundamental theory (such as Higgs fields in the Standard Model coupled to gravity), then their shadows in d dimensions must necessarily be conformal scalars. This has the physical consequence that the gravitational constant changes at each phase transition (inflation, grand unification, electro-weak, etc.), implying interesting new scenarios in cosmological applications. The fundamental action for pure gravity, which includes the spacetime metric, the dilaton and an additional auxiliary scalar field all in d+2 dimensions with two times, has a mix of gauge symmetries to produce appropriate constraints that remove all ghosts or redundant degrees of freedom. The action produces on-shell classical field equations of motion in d+2 dimensions, with enough constraints for the theory to be in agreement with classical General Relativity in d dimensions. Therefore this action describes the correct classical gravitational physics directly in d+2 dimensions. Taken together with previous similar work on the Standard Model of particles and forces, the present paper shows that 2T-physics is a general consistent framework for a physical theory.
We study the shadow and energy emission rate of a spherically symmetric non-commutative black hole in Rastall gravity. Depending on the model parameters, the non-commutative black hole can reduce to the Schwarzschild black hole. Since the non-vanishing non-commutative parameter affects the formation of event horizon, the visibility of the resulting shadow depends on the non-commutative parameter in Rastall gravity. The obtained sectional shadows respect the unstable circular orbit condition, which is crucial for physical validity of the black hole image model.
We consider spherically symmetric and static charged black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell gravities in general $D\ge 5$ dimensions and study their photon spheres and black hole shadows. We show that they all satisfy the sequence of inequalities recently proposed relating a black hole's horizon, photon sphere, shadow and its mass.

In the Einstein-bumblebee gravity, the Lorentz symmetry is spontaneously broken by a vector field. In this paper, we attempt to test the Lorentz symmetry via the observation of the shadow cast by the Kerr-like black hole with or without plasma. A novel phenomenon of the Lorentz-violating parameter on the shadow is observed. The result shows that when the observer gradually moves from the poles to the equatorial plane, the shadow radius $R_{\rm s}$ firstly decreases and then increases with the Lorentz-violating parameter. Such nonmonotonic behavior provides us an important understanding on the …
Null geodesics are invariant under a conformal transformation, and thus it might seem natural to assume that the observables corresponding to the shadow of a space-time are also conformally invariant. Here, we argue instead, that since the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner mass and the active gravitational mass of an asymptotically flat space-time are not, in general, invariant under such conformal transformations, the shadow radius for photon motion in a space-time would be quantitatively different, when viewed from two different conformally related frames, although the expression for the shadow radius i…
In this paper, the shadows cast by non-rotating and rotating modified gravity black holes are investigated. In addition to the black hole spin parameter $a$ and the inclination angle $θ$ of observer, another parameter $α$ measuring the deviation of gravitational constant from the Newton one is also found to affect the shape of the black hole shadow. The result shows that, for fixed values of $a/M$ and $θ$, the size and perimeter of the shadows cast by the non-rotating and rotating black holes significantly increase with the parameter $α$, while the distortions decrease with $α$. Moreover, the …
We show that the so-called chaos bound, proposed by Maldacena, Shenker, and Stanford, can be violated in $f(T)$ teleparallel gravity. In particular, it is possible to select a new gravitational Lyapunov parameter, controlling chaotization of circular trajectories, in black hole photo-sphere, that can exceed the Maldacena, Shenker and Stanford thermal bound. This feature alters the standard quasi-normal modes and ringdown phase after black hole merging with intriguing implications for future gravitational wave detections and black hole shadow measurements. It is a general characteristic for sev…
We obtain an exact Kerr-like black hole solution by solving the corresponding gravitational field equations in Einstein-bumblebee gravity model where Lorentz symmetry is spontaneously broken once a vector field acquires a vacuum expectation value. Results are presented for the purely radial Lorentz symmetry breaking. In order to study the effects of this breaking, we consider the black hole shadow and find that the radial of the unstable spherical orbit on the equatorial plane $r_c$ decreases with the Lorentz breaking constant $\ell>0$, and increases with $\ell<0$. These shifts are similar to …
In this paper, we use a new asymptotically flat and spherically symmetric solution in the generalized Einstein-Cartan-Kibble-Sciama (ECKS) theory of gravity to study the weak gravitational lensing and its shadow cast. To this end, we first compute the weak deflection angle of generalized ECKS black hole using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem in plasma medium and in vacuum. Next by using the Newman-Janis algorithm without complexification, we derive the rotating generalized ECKS black hole and in the sequel study its shadow. Then, we discuss the effects of the ECKS parameter on the weak deflection angl…
In this paper, we investigate the effect of higher curvature corrections from Gauss-Bonnet gravity on the shadow of charged black holes in both $AdS$ and Minkowski spacetimes. The null geodesic equations are computed in $d=5$ spacetime dimensions by using the directions of symmetries and Hamilton-Jacobi equation. With the null geodesics in hand, we then proceed to evaluate the celestial coordinates ($α, β$) and the radius $R_s$ of the black hole shadow and represent it graphically. The effects of charge $Q$ of the black hole and the Gauss-Bonnet parameter $γ$ on the radius of the shadow $R_s$ …
Lorentz-Violating (LV) scenario gets involved through a bumblebee field vector field $B_μ$. A spontaneous symmetry breaking allows the field to acquires a vacuum expectation value that generates LV into the system. A Kerr-Sen-like solution has been found out starting from the generalized form of a radiating stationery axially symmetric black-hole metric. We compute the effective potential offered by the null geodesics in the bumblebee rotating black-hole spacetime. The shadow has been sketched for different variations of the parameters involved in the system. A careful investigation has been c…
Symmergent gravity is the $R+R^2$ gravity theory which emerges in a way restoring gauge symmetries broken explicitly by the ultraviolet cutoff in effective field theories. To test symmergent gravity we construct novel black hole solutions in four dimensions, and study their shadow in the vacuum as well as plasma medium. Our detailed analyses show that the horizon radius, Hawking temperature, Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, shadow angular radius, and photon deflection angle are sensitive probes of the symmergent gravity and particle spectrum of the underlying quantum field theory.
We introduce a $(5+m)$-dimensional vacuum description of five-dimensional bulk inflaton models with exponential potentials that makes analysis of cosmological perturbations simple and transparent. We show that various solutions, including the power-law inflation model recently discovered by Koyama and Takahashi, are generated from known $(5+m)$-dimensional vacuum solutions of pure gravity. We derive master equations for all types of perturbations, and each of them becomes a second order differential equation for one master variable supplemented by simple boundary conditions on the brane. One e…
We discuss the emergence of black hole shadow and photon-sphere in the context of $f(R)$ gravity. It is shown that the shadow is exponentially sensitive to linear instabilities of metric coming from some $f(R)$ solutions. Thus, the instabilities of photon circular trajectories, delimiting the black hole photon-sphere, are double exponentialized. Specifically we individuate two Lyapunov exponents, rather than only one, related to two different sources of chaos in geodesic orbits as a sort of butterfly effect. Such a result violates the black hole chaos bound proposed by Maldacena, Shenker and S…
The time-like and null-like geodesics around compact objects are some of the best tools to classify and understand the structure of a space-time. In this paper, we study the null geodesics around charged static dilaton black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity. The physical parameters for non-radial geodesics including the effective potential, effective force, radius of the photon sphere and impact parameter are obtained and effects of the charge parameter and dilaton coupling constant on these quantities are studied. Possible photon motions for different values of the impact parameter a…
In this paper, we consider the Einstein-massive gravity coupled to the Yang-Mills gauge field in five dimensions. Concentrating on the static solutions with planar horizon geometry, we explore the thermodynamic behavior in the extended phase space and examine the validity of the first law of thermodynamics besides local thermal stability by the Hessian matrix. We observe that although the topology of boundary is planar, there exists the van der Waals like phase transition for this kind of solution. We find the critical quantities and discuss how the massive and Yang-Mills parameters affect the…
We present a scheme for generating first-order metric perturbation initial data for an arbitrary background and source. We then apply this scheme to derive metric perturbations in order-reduced dynamical Chern-Simons gravity (dCS). In particular, we solve for metric perturbations on a black hole background that are sourced by a first-order dCS scalar field. This gives us the leading-order metric perturbation to the spacetime in dCS gravity. We then use these solutions to compute black hole shadows in the linearly perturbed spacetime by evolving null geodesics. We present a novel scheme to deco…
In this article, we conduct a sequential study of possible observable images of black hole simulators described by two recently obtained rotating geometries in Einstein gravity, minimally coupled to a scalar field. One of them, "Kerr-like" (KL), can be seen as a legitimate alternative to the rotating Fisher-Janis-Newman-Winicour (FJNW) solution, and the other (TSL) is a scalar generalization of the Tomimatsu-Sato solution. Unlike the previous version of the rotating FJNW, these solutions do indeed satisfy the system's equations of motion. Our study includes both analytical and numerical calcul…
Asymptotically locally flat and AdS higher-dimensional black holes of Einstein-Horndeski-Maxwell gravity in the light of EHT observations: shadow behavior and deflection angle
A program was recently initiated to bridge the gap between the Planck scale physics described by loop quantum gravity and the familiar low energy world. We illustrate the conceptual problems and their solutions through a toy model: quantum mechanics of a point particle. Maxwell fields will be discussed in the second paper of this series which further develops the program and provides details.
In this paper, we derive an exact black hole spacetime metric in the Einstein-Hilbert-Bumblebee (EHB) gravity around global monopole field. We study the horizon, temperature, and the photon sphere of the black hole. Using the null geodesics equation, we obtain the shadow cast by the Schwarzschild-like black hole with a topological defect in bumblebee gravity. Interestingly, the radius of shadow of the black hole increases with increase in the global monopole parameter. We also visualize the shadows and energy emission rates for different values of parameters. Moreover, using the Gauss-Bonnet t…
In recent years, the study of quantum effects near the event horizon of black hole (BH) has attracted extensive attention. It has become one of the important methods to explore BH quantum properties by using the related properties of the quantum deformed black hole. In this work, we study the effect of quantum deformed black hole on BH shadow in two-dimensional Dilaton gravity. In this model, quantum effects are reflected on the quantum correction parameter m. By calculation, we find that: (1) the shape of the shadow boundary of a rotating black hole is determined by the BH spin $a$, the quant…
The recent Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of the M87* have led to a surge of interest in studying the shadow of black holes. Besides, investigation of time evolution and lifetime of black holes helps us to veto/restrict some theoretical models in gravitating systems. Motivated by such exciting properties, we study optical features of black holes, such as the shadow geometrical shape and the energy emission rate in modified gravity. We consider a charged AdS black hole in dRGT massive gravity and look for criteria to restrict the free parameters of the theory. The main goal of this …
Recently a $D$-dimensional regularization approach leading to the non-trivial $(3+1)$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) effective description of gravity was formulated which was claimed to bypass the Lovelock's theorem and avoid Ostrogradsky instability. Later it was shown that the regularization is possible only for some broad, but limited, class of metrics and Aoki, Gorji and Mukohyama [arXiv:2005.03859] formulated a well-defined four-dimensional EGB theory, which breaks the Lorentz invariance in a theoretically consistent and observationally viable way. The black-hole solution of the …

Light bending by the strong gravity around the black hole will form the so-called black hole shadow, the shape of which can shed light on the structure of the near-horizon geometry to possibly reveal novel physics of strong gravity and black hole. In this work, we adopt both analytical and ray-tracing methods to study the black hole shadow in the presence of the infrared structure of gravity theory, which manifests the asymptotic symmetries of spacetime as the supertranslation soft hairs of the black hole. Though the black hole metrics with and without the soft hair are related by large gauge …

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration's image of the compact object at the galactic center is the first direct evidence of the supermassive black hole (BH) Sgr A$^*$. The shadow of Sgr A$^*$ has an angular diameter $d_{sh}= 48.7 \pm 7\,μ$as with fractional deviation from the Schwarzschild BH shadow diameter $δ= -0.08^{+0.09}_{-0.09}\,,-0.04^{+0.09}_{-0.10}$ (for the VLTI and Keck mass-to-distance ratios). Sgr A$^*$'s shadow size is within $~10\%$ of Kerr predictions, equipping us with yet another tool to analyze gravity in the strong-field regime, including testing loop quantum gravi…
In this work, we present black hole solutions with a cosmological constant in bumblebee gravity, which provides a mechanism for the Lorentz symmetry violation by assuming a nonzero vacuum expectation value for the bumblebee field. From the gravitational point of view, such solutions are spherically symmetric black holes with an effective cosmological constant and are supported by an anisotropic energy-momentum tensor, conceived of as the manifestation of the bumblebee field in the spacetime geometry. Then we calculate the shadow angular radius for the proposed black hole solution with a positi…
Motivated by the lack of rotating solutions sourced by matter in General Relativity as well as in modified gravity theories, we extend a recently discovered exact rotating solution of the minimal Einstein-scalar theory to its counterpart in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity coupled to a Born-Infeld scalar field. This is accomplished with the implementation of a well-developed mapping between solutions of Ricci-Based Palatini theories of gravity and General Relativity. The new solution is parametrized by the scalar charge and the Born-Infeld coupling constant apart from the mass and spin o…
