The behavior of Wilson loops with fractional charge is used to study the $θ$-dependence of the free energy density $ε(θ)$ for the $CP^1$, $CP^5$, and $CP^9$ sigma models in two spacetime dimensions. The function $ε(θ)$ is extracted from the area law for a Wilson loop of charge $q=θ/2π$. For $CP^1$, $ε(θ)$ is smooth in the region $θ\approxπ$ and well-described by a dilute instanton gas throughout the range $0<θ<2π$. For $CP^5$ and $CP^9$ the energy exhibits a clear cusp and evidence for discrete, degenerate vacua at $θ= π$, as expected from large $N$ arguments. For $CP^9$ the $θ$-dependence is in good quantitative agreement with the leading order large $N$ prediction $ε(θ)={1/2}χ_tθ^2$ throughout the range $0<θ<π$.

This letter reports on how the Wilson flow technique can efficaciously kill the short-distance quantum fluctuations of 2- and 3-gluon Green functions, removes the $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ scale and destroys the transition from the confining non-perturbative to the asymptotically-free perturbative sector. After the Wilson flow, the behavior of the Green functions with momenta can be described in terms of the quasi-classical instanton background. The same behavior also occurs, before the Wilson flow, at low-momenta. This last result permits applications as, for instance, the detection of instanton phenomen…
Local Chirality of Low-Lying Dirac Eigenmodes and the Instanton Liquid Model
We study temperature dependence of the topological susceptibility with the $N_{f}=2+1$ flavors Wilson fermion. We have two major interests in this paper. One is a comparison of gluonic and fermionic definitions of the topological susceptibility. Two definitions are related by the chiral Ward-Takahashi identity but their coincidence is highly non-trivial for the Wilson fermion. By applying the gradient flow both for the gauge and quark fields we find a good agreement of these two measurements. The other is a verification of a prediction of the dilute instanton gas approximation at low temperatu…
