We present an update of the theoretical predictions for the cross section of top-quark pair production at Tevatron and LHC. In particular we employ improvements due to soft gluon resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We expand the resummed results and derive analytical finite-order cross sections through next-to-next-to-leading order which are exact in all logarithmically enhanced terms near threshold. These results are the best present estimates for the top-quark pair production cross section. We investigate the scale dependence as well as the sensitivity on the parton luminosities.
We briefly review the status of high precision QCD predictions available for LHC processes, focusing on corrections beyond NLO and ways to make the latter available in a convenient format. As a phenomenological example we discuss the two-loop corrections to Higgs boson pair production in gluon fusion.
This paper was submitted in Russian edition of Journal Physics of Atomic Nuclei in 2001. The present status of experiments that are being performed at nuclear reactors in order to seek the neutrino masses, mixing, and magnetic moments, whose discovery would be a signal of the existence of physics beyond the Standard Model, is considered, along with their future prospects.
I review the status of CP violating phenomena and CPT tests in the neutral Kaon system. Comparisons of present data with the expectations of the Cabibbo Kobayashi Maskawa model are presented, with particular emphasis being focused on the role of the theoretical uncertainties in this comparison. In addition, novel tests of CPT at DAFNE and Fermilab are briefly discussed.
We present an overview of the current status of neutrino oscillation studies at atmospheric neutrino experiments. While the current data gives some tentalising hints regarding the neutrino mass hierarchy, octant of $θ_{23}$ and $δ_{CP}$, the hints are not statistically significant. We summarise the sensitivity to these sub-dominant three-generation effects from the next-generation proposed atmospheric neutrino experiments. We next present the prospects of new physics searches such as non-standard interactions, sterile neutrinos and CPT violation studies at these experiments.
Prospects on electroweak physics at a future International Linear Collider (ILC) are summarized, including gauge coupling measurements, top quark physics and Higgs physics.
I summarize the status of neutrino oscillations from world neutrino oscillation data with date of October 2005. The results of a global analysis within the three-flavour framework are presented. Furthermore, a prospect on where we could stand in neutrino oscillations in ten years from now is given, based on a simulation of upcoming long-baseline accelerator and reactor experiments.
Brief overview of the present status on mixing and CP violation in kaons and B mesons is given by means of the unitarity triangle. Theoretical predictions on epsilon'/epsilon are confronted with experimental results. The prospects of detecting CP violation at high-energy p pbar, p p, e- e+ and mu- mu+ colliders are discussed in resonant scatterings involving top quarks and/or heavy scalars. The relevance of the latter for baryogenesis is briefly outlined.
The experimental determination of the muon magnetic moment and its theoretical prediction within the Standard Model and the MSSM are reviewed. A 3 sigma deviation between experiment and Standard Model prediction has been established, and supersymmetry could provide a natural explation of this deviation. Possible future improvements and the case for a new experiment are discussed.
The status of predictions for four-fermion production at e-e+ colliders is reviewed with an emphasis on the developments after the LEP2 era and an outlook to the challenges posed by the precision program at future colliders.
Inclusive neutral and charged current cross sections and structure functions measured at HERA-I are briefly reviewed. The impact of these measurements on parton density functions is discussed. The emphasis is put on the high x region. A first result obtained using the HERA-II data is also shown followed by future prospects for HERA.
The search for $D^0\bar{D}^0$ mixing may carry a large discovery potential for new physics. This paper discusses the techniques, current experimental status, and future prospects for the mixing search. Some new ideas, applicable to future mixing searches, are introduced. In this paper, the importance of separately measuring the decay rate difference and the mass difference of the two CP eigenstates (in order to observe New Physics) has been emphasized, since the theoretical calculations for long distance effects are still plagued by large uncertainties.
Discovering the Higgs boson is one of the primary goals of both the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The present status of the Higgs search is reviewed and future prospects for discovery at the Tevatron and LHC are considered. This talk focuses primarily on the Higgs boson of the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension. Theoretical expectations for the Higgs boson and its phenomenological consequences are reviewed.
We briefly review the current status of theoretical calculations for Higgs production at hadron colliders within the Standard Model. We focus on the main production mechanisms and decay modes at the Tevatron and the LHC.
Theoretical backgound for bileptonic gauge bosons is reviewed, both the SU(15) GUT model and the 3-3-1 model. Then the mass limits for bileptons are discussed coming from $e^+e^-$ scattering, polarized muon decay and muonium-antimuonium conversion. A consequence of precision electroweak data on the masses is mentioned. Discovery in $e^-e^-$ at a linear collider is emphasised.
Chiral low-energy constants (LECs) carry the information of short-distance dynamics involving heavier degrees of freedom not present in the chiral Lagrangian. Our knowledge of the LECs is all-important at phenomenological level because their relevance in the prediction of hadronic observables at low-energies and on the other side because they provide hints on the construction of a dual theory of QCD in the low-energy regime. I review briefly the status of these important couplings.
I start with a brief introduction to the elementary particles and their interactions, Higgs mechanism and supersymmetry. The major physics objectives of the Tevatron and LHC colliders are identified. The status and prospects of the top quark, charged Higgs boson and superparticle searches are discussed in detail, while those of the neutral Higgs boson(s) are covered in a parallel talk by R.J.N. Phillips at this workshop.
We review the status of theoretical calculations relevant for electroweak physics at hadron colliders. The large parton flux at high energy gives rise to events where different pairs of partons interact contemporarily with large momentum exchange. We present calculations of the cross-section for two, three and four weak gauge bosons production in single and multiparton interactions.
A brief review of the strategies used in looking for CP violation in B decays is presented. Some problems due to penguin diagrams are addressed. Penguin trapping is discussed, in the context of the upcoming experiments. The high rates and the possibility to perform experiments on the $B_s$ system justify the interest in hadronic colliders.
Hadron colliders are providing a unique opportunity for testing Lorentz invariance and CPT symmetry at high energy and in a laboratory. A first measurement in the top-quark sector was performed at the Tevatron. We present here prospective studies for testing Lorentz invariance in top-quark pair production at the LHC and future colliders. The b-quark sector was investigated recently at LHCb. Eventually, new bounds on photon parameters can be extracted from the observation of TeV photons at the LHC. We will conclude by highlighting other opportunities provided by hadron colliders.
One item on the agenda of future colliders is certain to be the Higgs boson. What is it trying to tell us? The primary objective of any future collider must surely be to identify physics beyond the Standard Model, and supersymmetry is one of the most studied options. it Is supersymmetry waiting for us and, if so, can LHC Run 2 find it? The big surprise from the initial 13-TeV LHC data has been the appearance of a possible signal for a new boson X with a mass ~750 GeV. What are the prospects for future colliders if the X(750) exists? One of the most intriguing possibilities in electroweak physi…
The search for $D^0\bar{D}^0$ mixing carries a large discovery potential for new physics since the $D^0\bar{D}^0$ mixing rate is expected to be very small in the Standard Model. The past decade has seen significant experimental progress in sensitivity, from 20\% down to 0.37\%. This paper discusses the techniques, current experimental status, and future prospects for the mixing search. Some new ideas, applicable to future mixing searches, are introduced. One of the new ideas is to use Singly Cabibbo Suppressed Decays (SCSD), such as $D^0 \to K+K-, π^+π^-$, to study mixing. A postscript version…
I discuss the physics prospects at future high--energy $e^+ e^-$ linear colliders. After summarizing some aspects of these future machines, I will review a few topics in the Standard Model which can be studied at these colliders: top quark, $W/Z$ vector bosons and Higgs particles physics. A brief discussion on the exploration of extensions of the Standard Model such as Supersymmetry and Grand Unified Theories at $\ee$ colliders will also be given. (Invited talk given at Les Rencontres de Physique de la Vallée d'Aoste, La Thuile March 3-9 1996).
New experimental results on polarized structure functions, cross sections for $e^{\pm}p$ neutral and charge current reactions and $ν$ ($\barν$) charge current on isoscalar targets are compared with predictions using the statistical parton distributions, which were previously determined. New data on cross sections for Drell-Yan processes, single jet in $p\bar{p}$ collisions and inclusive $π^0$ production in $pp$ collisions are also compared with predictions from this theoretical approach. The good agreement which we find with all these tests against experiment, strenghtens our opinion on the re…
We examine the prospects of detecting sfermions at a gamma gamma collider. Once produced, a slepton can decay into a pair of quarks (jets) through R-parity violating interactions. Similarly, a squark may decay into a lepton-quark pair. Analyzing the corresponding Standard Model backgrounds, namely 4-jet and dilepton plus dijet final states respectively, we show that the sfermion can be detected almost right upto the kinematic limit and its mass determined to a fair degree of accuracy. Similar statements also hold for nonsupersymmetric leptoquarks and diquarks.
In this presentation we review the current status in the automated evaluation of scattering amplitudes, with particular attention to the developments related with NLO calculations, which led to the construction of powerful multi-purpose computational tools. After a general overview, we will devote a short section to describe the GoSam framework for NLO calculations and its application to the production of Higgs boson plus jets. We will then briefly comment on the challenges presented by NNLO calculations, whose structure is considerably more complicated. Finally, we will describe some of the f…
This paper investigates a signature of Lorentz invariance violation with the $t\bar{t}$ production at the LHC and future hadron colliders. Possible deviations from the Lorentz symmetry remain poorly constrained in the top quark sector. With a dedicated analysis of $t\bar{t}$ events produced at the LHC, bounds in the top sector can be improved by up to three orders of magnitude relative to Tevatron, the only measurement existing so far. The sensitivity will be even further enhanced at the HL-LHC and future colliders.
The experimental measurements on flavour physics, in tension with Standard Model predictions, exhibit large sources of Lepton Flavour Universality violation. This note summarises an analysis of the effects of the global fits to the Wilson coefficients assuming a model independent effective Hamiltonian approach, by including a proposal of different scenarios to include the New Physics contributions. Additionally, we include an overview of the impact of the future generation of colliders in the field of B-meson anomalies.
While most BSM searches at the LHC focus on heavy new states, the NMSSM contains the possibility of new light states that have escaped detection due to their singlet nature. Here we focus on light pseudoscalars, investigating the parameter space impact of recent LHC searches for such light states stemming from the decay of the 125 GeV Higgs boson. It is shown that, though direct searches can not yet compete with the requirement of the 125 GeV scalar having SM-like couplings, the searches are touching the allowed parameter space and should make a phenomenological impact in the near future.
We summarize the current status of accelerator based neutrino crosssection measurements. We focus on the experimental challenges while also presenting the motivation for these measurements. Selected results are highlighted after a quick description of the current major collaborations working on the field.
We consider Higgs pair production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in a Randall-Sundrum scenario containing a radion field. It is shown that the enhanced effective coupling of the radion to gluons, together with contributions from a low-lying radion pole, can provide larger event rates compared to most new physics possibilities considered so far. We present the results for both an intermediate mass Higgs and a heavy Higgs, with a detailed discussion of the background elimination procedure.
$e^+e^-\to W^+W^-$ is an integral part of the global precision analysis program which is becoming more relevant after the discovery of the Higgs boson. We analyze the current situation of precision calculations of inclusive $e^+e^-\to W^+W^-$ observables, and study the prospects of incorporating them into the framework of global precision electroweak analyses in light of per-mil-level cross section measurements at proposed future facilities. We present expansion formulas for the observables, making the dependence on the inputs clear. Also, the calculation of new physics effects is demonstrated…
We investigate the prospects of discovering split Supersymmetry at a future 100 TeV proton-proton collider through the direct production of electroweakino next-to-lightest-supersymmetric-particles (NLSPs). We focus on signatures with multi-lepton and missing energy: $3\ell$, opposite-sign dileptons and same-sign dileptons. We perform a comprehensive study of different electroweakino spectra. A 100 TeV collider with 3000/fb data is expected to exclude Higgsino thermal dark matter candidates with $m_{\rm{LSP}}\sim 1 $ TeV if Wino NLSPs are lighter than about 3.2 TeV. The $3\ell$ search usually o…
For the envisioned precision measurement of the W-boson mass at present and future lepton and hadron colliders it is crucial that the theoretical predictions for the underlying production processes are well under control. We briefly describe the status of the predictions for the W-pair-production processes at e+ e- colliders, e+ e- -> W+ W- -> 4f, and for W- and Z-boson production at pp and p anti-p colliders, pp, p anti-p -> W -> l nu_l and pp, p anti-p -> Z,gamma -> l+ l- (l=e,mu). We also discuss the theoretical improvements needed to meet the experimental accuracies one hopes to achieve in…
This presentation reviews the Standard Model formalism governing the weak decays of quarks, as embodied in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) weak mixing matrix, and summarizes the experimental status and outlook. Two recent CLEO V_cb analyses are described. Complications from strong interactions in relating the experimentally accessible quantities to CKM elements are highlighted, and prospects for addressing those difficulties with LQCD and CLEO-c are outlined.
The recent experimental results on CP violation related to the angles of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) unitarity triangle 2beta+gamma are summarized in these proceedings. These results are obtained with approximately 232 million Y4S->BBbar events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B-factory at SLAC. Using the measurements on time-dependent CP asymmetries in B0->D(*)-+pi+- and B0->D-+rho+- decays and theoretical assumptions, one finds |sin(2beta+gamma)|>0.64 (0.40) at 68% (90%) confidence level. The perspectives of sin(2beta+gamma) measurement with B0bar-> D…
We summarize the current status and near future prospects for next-to-next-to-leading order calculations matched to parton shower based on the MiNNLO$_{\rm PS}$ method. We give a theoretical overview, illustrate selected results for $ZZ\to 4\ell$ and top-pair production processes at the LHC, and provide an outlook of the future challenges.
I review the present status of the automatic NLO tools MadLoop and aMC@NLO by presenting, as an example of their use, phenomenological studies of hadron collider processes. Perspectives on applications to linear collider Physics are also discussed
This work considers an extension of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs sector by a real, scalar singlet field, including applicability to a dark matter (DM) model with the addition of a Yukawa coupling to a Dirac fermion. The collider signatures and constraints on the mixed two-Higgs scenario are determined, including limits from Higgs production signals and exclusion searches, as well as constraints arising from the Higgs total and invisible widths. As there is overwhelming Higgs data which is consistent with a SM scenario, the case in which an additional scalar has evaded detection is further exp…
The theoretical framework for a next-to-leading order QCD analysis of the spin-dependent parton densities Delta f^{gamma}(x,Q^2) of the longitudinally polarized photon and of its structure function g_1^{gamma}(x,Q^2) is reviewed in some detail. Special emphasis is given to the specific features of different factorization schemes. Two conceivable scenarios for the polarized parton densities Delta f^{gamma}(x,Q^2) are introduced, which are suitable to study the sensitivity of future experiments to the so far unmeasured Delta f^{gamma}. The experimental prospects of determining Delta f^{gamma} at…
The status of the Standard Model (SM) is reviewed. We emphazize the fact that in spite of the success of the SM for the descrition of the fermionic sector, the status of the bosonic sector (gauge and scalar) suffers from many theoretical deficiencies and from the lack of empirical support. This situation, which leaves room for several types of extensions or alternatives to SM, strongly motivates the pursue of intense efforts for finding hints of New Physics (NP) effects. We present a phenomenological description valid for energies lying below the NP scale. We discuss the indirect constraints e…
Bi-large patterns for the leptonic mixing matrix are confronted with current neutrino oscillation data. We analyse the status of these patterns and determine, through realistic simulations, the potential of upcoming long-baseline experiment DUNE in testing bi-large \emph{ansatze} and discriminating amongst them.
We study the potential of hadron colliders in the search for the pair production of neutral Higgs bosons in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We perform a detailed signal and background analysis, working out efficient kinematical cuts for the extraction of the signal. The important role of squark loop contributions to the signal is re--emphasized. If the signal is sufficiently enhanced by these contributions, it could even be observable at the next run of the upgraded Tevatron collider in the near future. At the LHC the pair production of light and heavy Higgs bosons …
The search for a Z' is one of the tasks of future colliders. I study the capability to detect the Z' at a linear e+e- collider operating below resonance production. Depending on m_{\Zp} and the collider parameters we will be able to discriminate between Z' models.
In the past decade the observation of cross section modification for leading hadrons, heavy flavor and two particle correlations in heavy ion collisions has provided important insights into the dynamics of parton propagation in dense strongly-interacting matter. The development of the theory of reconstructed jets and related experimental measurements have further shed light on the characteristics of in-medium parton showers. So far, experimental results from ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC have been analyzed in the framework of parton energy loss, where the precision of t…
Lattice QCD is an important tool for theoretical input for flavor physics. There have been four reviews by the Flavour Lattice Averaging Group (FLAG). This talk will review the current status of the magnitude of eight of the nine CKM matrix elements, borrowing heavily from the most recent FLAG review (co-authored by the speaker). Future prospects for improving the determination of the CKM matrix will be discussed.
In this talk we review the GOLEM approach to one-loop calculations and present an automated implementation of this technique. This method is based on Feynman diagrams and an advanced reduction of one-loop tensor integrals which avoids numerical instabilities. We have extended our one-loop integral library golem95 with an automated one-loop matrix element generator to compute the virtual corrections of the process $q\bar{q}\to b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$. The implementation of the virtual matrix element has been interfaced with tree-level Monte Carlo programs to provide the full result for the above proc…
The CMS collaboration reported a $\sim 3 \, σ$ (local) excess at $96\;$GeV in the search for light Higgs-boson decaying into two photons. This mass coincides with a $\sim 2 \, σ$ (local) excess in the $b\bar b$ final state at LEP. We show an interpretation of these possible signals as the lightest Higgs boson in the 2 Higgs Doublet Model with an additional complex Higgs singlet (2HDMS). The interpretation is in agreement with all experimental and theoretical constraints. We concentrate on the 2HDMS type II, which resembles the Higgs and Yukawa structure of the Next-to Minimal Supersymmetric St…
This is a brief review of the status of understanding the proton polarizabilities in chiral perturbation theory and of their relevance to the `proton charge radius puzzle'.
The neutral kaon system offers a unique possibility to perform fundamental tests of CPT invariance. In this contribution the KLOE prospects for the measurements of CPT violation in the context of the Standard Model Extension are presented together with a full description of the analysis method needed and with the perspective given by the KLOE-2 data-taking campaign.
After a five year upgrade period, the CDF detector located at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider is back in operation taking high quality data with all subsystems functional. We report on the status of the CDF experiment in Run II and discuss the start-up of the Tevatron accelerator. First physics results from CDF are presented. We also discuss the prospects for B physics in Run II, in particular the measurements of Bs flavour oscillations and CP violation in B decays.
The current status of lattice calculation of weak matrix elements for heavy quark systems is reviewed. After an assessment of systematic errors in present simulations, results for the B meson decay constant, the B-parameter B_B and semi-leptonic heavy-to-light and heavy-to-heavy transitions are discussed. The final topic are lattice results for heavy baryon spectroscopy.
The last years have been an exciting period for the field of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) research. With recent CMB balloon-borne and ground-based experiments we are entering a new era of 'precision' cosmology that enables us to use the CMB anisotropy measurements to constrain the cosmological parameters and test new theoretical scenarios.
This talk gives an overview of how lattice QCD calculations are influencing quark flavor physics. The first part of the talk focuses on the climb to higher precision; the second part surveys views along less-trodden paths.
High-precision flavor physics measurements play a complementary role to the direct searches for new physics by CMS and ATLAS experiments at LHC. Such measurements will be performed with the Belle II detector at the upgraded KEKB accelerator (SuperKEKB) in Japan. The physics potential with emphasis on the charm sector, current status and future prospects of the Belle II experiment are presented in these proceedings.
We discuss some recent developments towards a quantitative understanding of the production and early-time evolution of bulk quark-gluon matter in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions.
