We analyze data from five Chandra observations of the spiral galaxy NGC 6946 and from three Chandra observations of the irregular/spiral interacting galaxy pair NGC 4485/4490, with an emphasis on investigating the long-term variability exhibited by the source populations. We detect 90 point sources coincident with NGC 6946 down to luminosities of a few times 10^36 erg/s, and 38 sources coincident with NGC 4485/90 down to a luminosity of ~1x10^37 erg/s. Twenty-five (15) sources in NGC 6946 (NGC 4485/90) exhibit long-term (i.e., weeks to years) variability in luminosity; 11 (4) are transient candidates. The single ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in NGC 6946 and all but one of the eight ULXs in NGC 4485/90 exhibit long-term flux variability. Two of the ULXs in NGC 4485/90 have not been identified before as ultraluminous sources. The widespread variability in both systems is indicative of the populations being dominated by X-ray binaries, and this is supported by the X-ray colors of the sources. The distribution of colors among the sources indicates a large fraction of high-mass X-ray binaries in both systems. The shapes of the X-ray luminosity functions of the galaxies do not change significantly between observations and can be described by power laws with cumulative slopes ~0.6-0.7 (NGC 6946) and ~0.4 (NGC 4485/90).
We use X-ray monitoring data obtained over a broad range of time-scales to measure the broadband power spectral density functions (PSDs) of two Seyfert galaxies, the broad line Seyfert 1 NGC 3227 and the Seyfert 2 NGC 5506, which has recently been identified as an obscured Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS 1). Using a Monte-Carlo fitting technique we demonstrate that both PSDs are reminiscent of the PSD of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) in the high/soft state, and specifically rule out a low/hard state PSD shape in NGC 3227. This result demonstrates that, at least where variability is concerned, …
We apply Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to study the variability of the X-ray continuum in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469. The PCA technique is used to separate out linear components contributing to variability between multiple datasets; the technique is often used in analysis of optical spectra, but has rarely been applied to AGN X-ray spectroscopy. Running a PCA algorithm on 0.3-10 keV EPIC data from a 150 ks XMM-Newton observation of NGC 7469, we describe the spectral components extracted and evaluate the usefulness of the PCA technique for understanding the X-ray continuum in AGN.
In discussing the short-time variability of extragalactic X-ray sources, we focus on explaining how wavelet transform in conjunction with non-linear filtering methods are used to remove Poisson statistics and wobble-related variability from the data. This enables the resolution of their intrinsic stochastic, quasi-periodic and deterministic variable components, as well the determination of their persistence. As detailed examples we review and extend the application of these techniques to ROSAT data for the Seyfert I galaxy NGC 5548 and for the QSO 3C273. Besides illustrating the discriminating…
In this work we have investigated short time-scale variability of NGC 4051 and NGC 4388. The quasi-steady QPO's time scale of 3920$\pm$17 sec was detected for NGC 4051. For the case of NGC 4388 we investigated rapid variability of the parameters of spectral models. To obtain these results, a new "Moving Fit" method for processing of the trailed X-ray spectrograms was developed.
We present optical spectroscopic observations of the least-luminous known Seyfert 1 galaxy, NGC 4395, which was monitored every half-hour over the course of 3 nights. The continuum emission varied by ~35 per cent over the course of 3 nights, and we find marginal evidence for greater variability in the blue continuum than the red. A number of diagnostic checks were performed on the data in order to constrain any systematic or aperture effects. No correlations were found that adequately explained the observed variability, hence we conclude that we have observed real intrinsic variability of the …
We present the results of a search for X-ray variability in the galactic open cluster NGC 2516. This cluster has been observed on 8 occasions using XMM-Newton making it an excellent target for such a study. We find 4 sources which show significant variability, implying the detection of one significantly variable source every 25ksec. All sources exhibit spectra which can be fitted using an absorbed one or two temperature thermal plasma model. The brightest of these flares also show a prominent Iron line near ~7.0keV. All 4 sources lie near the observed main sequence of NGC 2516 suggesting they …
We present a flux variability study of simultaneous RXTE and EUVE observations of the highly variable Seyfert galaxy NGC4051. We find a strong correlation between variability in the EUV and medium energy X-ray bands, indicating that both are sampling the same power-law continuum. The lag between the two bands is less than 20 ks and, depending on model assumptions, may be <1 ks. We examine the consequences of such a small lag in the context of simple Comptonisation models for the production of the power-law continuum. A lag of <1 ks implies that the size of the Comptonising region is less than 2…
We analyze observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 covering 90 years in the optical band and 27 years in the 2-10 keV X-ray band. We compute the Normalized Power Spectrum Density (NPSD), the Structure Function (SF) and the Autocorrelation Function (ACF) for these data. The results show that the optical and X-ray variability properties are significantly different. X-ray variations are predominantly in the timescale range of 5 - 1000 days. The optical variations have also a short timescale component which may be related to X-ray variability but the dominant effect is the long timescale varia…
We present the results of a search for variable stars in the central part of the globular cluster NGC 6752. The monitored sample included 160 BHB and 107 EHB stars, respectively. A total of 17 variables were detected of which 14 are new identifications. Five variables are BHB/EHB stars. We report also on identification of a detached eclipsing binary being likely a member of the cluster. Moreover, we detected an outburst of a dwarf nova located in the cluster core.
We present evidence of flux variability, on both short (hours) and long (months) time scales of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7172. These results are based on the ASCA observation of NGC 7172 performed on May 1996. The source was detected at a rather low flux level, about 3 times fainter than its usual state (including one year before, when it was also observed by ASCA). The source also varied by about 30 percent during the observation, confirming the presence of a type 1 nucleus in its center. However, its spectrum appears to be flatter than the typical Seyfert 1 spectrum (in agreement with findin…
We present strong evidence for variability of the flux of the iron K$α$ emission line in the Seyfert 1 galaxy, NGC 3516. Two ASCA observations, separated by $\sim 1$~yr, showed a marked decrease in continuum flux by $\sim 60$~per cent. The flux in the broad, iron K$α$ line decreased by the same factor in this time period, with no evidence for changes in the line profile. The line variability is significant at $>99$~per cent confidence and rules out models in which the line is produced in a molecular torus located at $>1$~pc from the nucleus. An accretion disk is considerably more likely.
We present the results of timing analysis of the XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 6300. The hard X-ray spectrum above 2 keV consists of a Compton-thin-absorbed power law, as is often seen in Seyfert 2 galaxies. We clearly detected rapid time variability on a time scale of about 1000 s from the light curve above 2 keV. The excess variance of the time variability (sigma2_RMS) is calculated to be ~0.12, and the periodogram of the light curve is well represented by a power law function with a slope of 1.75. In contrast with previous results from Seyfert 2 nuclei, these variabilit…
On 9-11 May 1998, the highly-variable, low luminosity Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC4051 was observed in an unusual low flux state by BeppoSAX (Guainazzi et al. 1998) RXTE and EUVE. We present fits of the 4-15 keV RXTE spectrum and BeppoSAX MECS spectrum obtained during this observation, which are consistent with the interpretation that the source had switched off, leaving only the spectrum of pure reflection from distant cold matter. We place this result in context by showing the X-ray lightcurve of NGC4051 obtained by our RXTE monitoring campaign over the past two and a half years, which shows that th…
We present a study of the photometric variability of spectroscopically confirmed supergiants in NGC 300, comprising 28 epochs extending over a period of five months. We find 15 clearly photometrically variable blue supergiants in a sample of nearly 70 such stars, showing maximum light amplitudes ranging from 0.08 to 0.23 magnitudes in the V band, and one variable red supergiant. We show their light curves, and determine semi-periods for two A2 Ia stars. Assuming that the observed changes correspond to similar variations in the bolometric luminosity, we test for the influence of this variabilit…
We present a series of RXTE observations of the nearby obscured Seyfert galaxies ESO103-G35, IC5063, NGC4507 and NGC7172. The period of monitoring ranges from seven days for NGC7172 up to about seven months for ESO103-G035. The spectra of all galaxies are well fit with a highly obscured (N_H>10^23 cm-2) power-law and an Fe line at 6.4 keV. We find strong evidence for the presence of a reflection component in ESO103-G35 and NGC4507. The observed flux presents strong variability on day timescales in all objects. Spectral variability is also detected in the sense that the spectrum steepens with i…
We derive power density spectra in the optical and X-ray band in the timescale range from several years down to $\sim $ a day. We suggest that the optical power density spectrum consists of two separate components: long timescale variations and short timescale variations, with the dividing timescale around 100 days. The shape of the short timescale component is similar to X-ray power density spectrum which is consistent with the interpretation of short timescale optical variations being caused by X-ray reprocessing. We show that the observed optical long timescale variability is consistent wit…
We present multiple Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the type 1.8 Seyfert Galaxy NGC 1365, which shows the most dramatic X-ray spectral changes observed so far in an AGN: the source switched from reflection dominated to transmission dominated and back in just 6 weeks. During this time the soft thermal component, arising from a ~1 kpc region around the center, remained constant. The reflection component is constant at all timescales, and its high flux relative to the primary component implies the presence of thick gas covering a large fraction of the solid angle. The presence of this gas,…
The variability of optical FeII blends in NGC 4051 is examined from spectra extracted from the AGN Watch program. In our analysis, the FeII complex are subtracted and measured with the following results. Firstly, the FeII variations were detected in NGC 4051 during a 3-year period. The identified FeII variations followed the variations in continuum closely. Secondly, the EW of FeII is reported to increase with the rising continuum flux, which is consistent with previous claims that there is no convincing Baldwin Effect in optical FeII. Thirdly, by comparing the variations of H$β$ and FeII, we f…
We observed the young open cluster NGC 2301 for 14 nights in Feb. 2004 using the orthogonal transfer CCD camera (OPTIC). We used PSF shaping techniques ("square stars") during the observations allowing a larger dynamic range (4.5 magnitudes) of high photometric precision results ($\le$2 mmag) to be obtained. These results are better than similar observing campaigns using standard CCD imagers. This paper discusses our observational techniques and presents initial results for the variability statistics found in NGC 2301. Details of the variability statistics as functions of color, variability ty…
Evidence is emerging that the luminous X-ray sources in the cores of globular clusters may often consist of, or perhaps even as a class be dominated by, ultracompact (P < 1 hr) binary stars. To the two such systems already known, in NGC 6624 and NGC 6712, we now add evidence for two more. We detect large amplitude variability in the candidate optical counterpart for the X-ray source in the core of NGC 6652. Although the available observations are relatively brief, the existing Hubble Space Telescope data indicate a strong 43.6 min periodic modulation of the visible flux of semi-amplitude 30%. …
Multi-epoch Chandra X-ray observations of nearby massive early-type galaxies open up the study of an important regime of low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) behavior -- long term variability. In a companion paper, we report on the detection of 158 X-ray sources down to a detection/completeness limit of 0.6/1.4 x 10^{37} ergs/s using five Chandra observations of NGC 4697, one of the nearest (11.3 Mpc), optically luminous (M_B < -20), elliptical (E6) galaxy. In this paper, we report on the variability of LMXB candidates measured on timescales from seconds to years. At timescales of seconds to hours, we…
We present the results of a long-term variability survey of the old open cluster NGC 6791. The BVI observations, collected over a time span of 6 years, were analyzed using the ISIS image subtraction package. The main target of our observations were two cataclysmic variables B7 and B8. We have identified possible cycle lenghts of about 25 and 18 days for B7 and B8, respectively. We tentatively classify B7 as a VY Scl type nova-like variable or a Z Cam type dwarf nova. B8 is most likely an SS Cygni type dwarf nova. We have also extracted the light curves of 42 other previously reported variable …
(Abridged) We present the results from {\it ASCA} observations of NGC 3227 along with those from a {\it ROSAT} observation. The 0.6--10 keV continuum is consistent with a powerlaw with $Γ\sim 1.6$, flatter than that typically observed in Seyfert galaxies. Fe $K$-shell emission is observed with an EW and profile typical of Seyfert 1 galaxies. The {\it ASCA} observations in 1993 reveal absorption by a screen $N_{H,z}^{ion} \simeq 3\times10^{21} cm^{-2}}$ of ionized material with $U_X \simeq 0.01$. Joint analysis of the {\it ASCA} and {\it ROSAT} data show an additional screen of neutral material…
The Seyfert galaxy NGC 6814 is known to show periodic variation of its X-ray luminosity. We found that the sequences of peaks (variability patterns) in the folded X-ray light curves constructed from the {\it Exosat} and {\it Ginga} data are remarkably similar when one ignores amplitudes of the peaks and considers only their phases. The stable pattern consists of five peaks which are present in the both curves. The phases of the corresponding peaks coincide with an accuracy of about 10 degrees. The probability that this coincidence occurs by chance is less than about 1\% according to the most c…
We report the detection of an absorbed central X-ray source and its strong, rapid variability in NGC4395, the least luminous Seyfert nucleus known. The X-ray source exhibits a number of flares with factors of 3-4 flux changes during a half day ASCA observation. Such X-ray variability is in constrast to the behaviour of other low luminosity active galaxies. It provides further support for an accreting black hole model rather than an extreme stellar process in accounting for the nuclear activity of NGC4395. The soft X-ray emission below 3 keV is strongly attenuated by absorption. The energy spec…
Direct time-resolved spectral fitting has been performed on continuous RXTE monitoring of seven Seyfert 1 galaxies in order to study their broadband spectral variability and Fe K alpha variability characteristics on time scales of days to years. Variability in the Fe K alpha line is not detected in some objects but is present in others, e.g., in NGC 3516, NGC 4151 and NGC 5548 there are systematic decreases in line flux by factors of ~2-5 over 3-4 years. The Fe K alpha line varies less strongly than the broadband continuum, but, like the continuum, exhibits stronger variability towards longer …
Aims: To investigate variability and to model the pulsational behaviour of AGB variables in the intermediate-age LMC cluster NGC 1846. Methods: Our own photometric monitoring has been combined with data from the MACHO archive to detect 22 variables among the cluster's AGB stars and to derive pulsation periods. According to the global parameters of the cluster we construct pulsation models taking into account the effect of the C/O ratio on the atmospheric structure. In particular, we have used opacities appropriate for both O-rich stars and carbon stars in the pulsation calculations. Results: T…
An analysis of the X-ray variability of the low luminosity Seyfert nucleus NGC 4395, based on a long XMM-Newton observation, is presented. The power spectrum shows a clear break from a flat spectrum (alpha ~ 1) to a steeper spectrum (alpha ~ 2) at a frequency f_br = 0.5 - 3.0 * 10^-3 Hz, comparable to the highest characteristic frequency found previously in a Seyfert galaxy. This extends the measured M_BH-f_br values to lower M_BH than previous studies of Seyfert galaxies, and is consistent with an inverse scaling of variability frequency with black hole mass. The variations observed are among…
Context: Power density spectra (PDS) that are characteristic of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) have been previously reported for M31 X-ray sources, observed by XMM-Newton. However, we have recently discovered that these PDS result from the improper addition/subtraction of non-simultaneous lightcurves. Aims: To understand the properties and origins of the artefact. Methods: We re-analysed our XMM-Newton observations of M31 with non-simultaneous and simultaneous lightcurves, then combined simulated lightcurves at various intensities with various offsets and found that the artefact is more depen…
We present timing and spectral analysis of the data collected by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite (EUVE) for the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 during 1996. NGC 4051 was observed twice in May 1996 and again in December 1996 for a total of more than 200 ks. The observations were always simultaneous with hard X-ray observations conducted with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The EUVE light curves are extremely variable during each observation, with the maximum variability of more than a factor of 15 from peak to minimum. We detected signal in the EUVE spectrograph in the 75-100 A ran…
We present the first result of a programme to search for large flux variations in the X-ray sources of the XMM Serendipitous Survey compared to previous ROSAT observations. An increase in X-ray flux by a factor >10 was discovered from the nucleus of the galaxy NGC7589 on a timescale of less than 5 years. The 0.4-10keV XMM spectrum can be approximated by a power-law with photon index of 1.7-1.8, though it seems to flatten above 5keV, suggesting a possible complex model, such as partial covering or disc reflection. A classification based on an analysis of its optical spectrum places NGC7589 in t…
We present a study of the time variability of NGC 7469, based on a ~30 d RXTE/PCA observation. Variability is seen across the X-ray band, and spectral changes are observed. The softness ratio is correlated with the ultraviolet flux, but appears to show more rapid variability. The RMS variability parameter calculated on ~1d time scales is significantly variable, and sharp increases are seen close to the periods where the spectrum is hardest. Cross correlation of 2-4 keV, 4-10 keV and 10-15 keV light curves show a peak at zero delay, but the CCFs are skewed towards positive lags (i.e. the soft l…
We report the discovery with XMM-Newton of quasiperiodic variability in the 0.2 - 10 keV X-ray flux from the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 5408 X-1. The average power spectrum of all EPIC-pn data reveals a strong 20 mHz QPO with an average amplitude (rms) of 9%, and a coherence of Q~6. In a 33 ksec time interval when the 20 mHz QPO is strongest we also find evidence for a 2nd QPO peak at 15 mHz. This is the first indication for a close pair of QPOs in a ULX source. Interestingly, the frequency ratio of this QPO pair is inconsistent with 3:2 at the 3sigma level, but is consistent with a 4:3 ra…
We present the characteristics of the X-ray variability of stars in the cluster NGC2516 as derived from XMM-Newton/EPIC/pn data. The X-ray variations on short (hours), medium (months), and long (years) time scales have been explored. We detected 303 distinct X-ray sources by analysing six EPIC/pn observations; 194 of them are members of the cluster. Stars of all spectral types, from the early-types to the late-M dwarfs, were detected. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test applied to the X-ray photon time series shows that, on short time scales, only a relatively small fraction (ranging from 6% to 31% fo…
The Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 was intensely monitored between 1991 December and 1992 August. We present the results from the ground-based observations in the optical and near-IR, which complement the data-set from the IUE, discussed elsewhere. Spectroscopic and photometric data from many observatories were combined in order to obtain well sampled light curves of the continuum and of H-Beta. During the campaign the source varied significantly. The light curves of the optical continuum and of H-Beta are similar to those obtained with the IUE. The near-IR flux did not vary significantly except fo…
This paper combines data from the three preceding papers in order to analyze the multi-waveband variability and spectral energy distribution of the Seyfert~1 galaxy NGC~4151 during the December 1993 monitoring campaign. The source, which was near its peak historical brightness, showed strong, correlated variability at X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical wavelengths. The strongest variations were seen in medium energy ($\sim$1.5~keV) X-rays, with a normalized variability amplitude (NVA) of 24\%. Weaker (NVA = 6\%) variations (uncorrelated with those at lower energies) were seen at soft $γ$-ray ener…
We report on the X-ray spectral variability of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 observed with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) during a 1000 day period between May 1996 and March 1999. The spectra were obtained as part of monitoring observations and from two long observations using the RXTE Proportional Counter Array (PCA). During the monitoring period the 2-10 keV flux of NGC 4051 varied between 10E-12 and 7x 10E11 (cgs). We re-analysed RXTE PCA observations from a distinct low state in May 1998 using the latest background and detector response models. The RXTE and BeppoSAX observations of…
NGC 5548 was observed by BeppoSAX in a single long (8 day) observation from 0.2 to 200 keV. We find (1) the spectral variation of the source is produced by a change of the intrinsic power law slope; (2) a high energy cut-off at $E_c= 115^{+39}_{-27}$ keV with a hint of change of $E_c$ with flux; (3) OVII and OVIII absorption K edges, and a possible blended OVII-OVIII K$α,β$ emission feature at $0.54^{+0.07}_{-0.06}$ keV, inconsistent with a purely photoionized gas in equilibrium. We propose that the temperature of the absorbing and emitting gas is $\sim 10^6$ K so that both collisional ionizat…
We present the results of an extensive analysis of the ``ASCA'' AO2 observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC4051. The target exhibits broadband [0.5--10 keV] variability by a factor $\sim 8$ on time scales $\sim 10^4 s$, with a typical doubling time $\sim 500 s$. The spectrum is characterized by a strong emission excess over the extrapolated power law at energies $E \le 1 keV$. Absorption edges due to ionized oxygen species OVII and OVIII are detected together with an emission-like feature at $E \sim 0.93 keV$. The OVII edge undergoes significant variability on a timescale as low as $\sim 10^4 …
V1432 Aquilae (=RX J1940.2-1025) is the X-ray bright, eclipsing magnetic cataclysmic variable ~37' away from the Seyfert galaxy, NGC 6814. Due to a 0.3% difference between the orbital (12116.3 s) and the spin (12150 s) periods, the accretion geometry changes over the ~50 day beat period. Here we report the results of an RXTE campaign to observe the eclipse 25 times, as well as of archival observations with ASCA and BeppoSAX. Having confirmed that the eclipse is indeed caused by the secondary, we use the eclipse timings and profiles to map the accretion geometry as a function of the beat phase.…
A series of {\sl ROSAT\/}, {\sl ASCA\/} and Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory ({\sl CGRO\/}) observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 were carried out during the period 1993 November 30 to December 13 as part of an intensive campaign to study the multiwavelength spectral characteristics of its short time-scale variability. In the softest X-ray bands monitored by {\sl ROSAT} (0.1--0.4 keV, 0.5--1.0 keV) the source flux remained constant throughout the observing period. However, in an adjacent band (1.0--2.0 keV) significant variability was evident, the most obvious feature being a marked increas…
We analyze a composite broad-band optical/UV/Xgamma-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. The spectrum consists of an average of simultaneous optical/IUE/Ginga observations accompanied by ROSAT and GRO/OSSE data from non-simultaneous observations. We show that the broad-band continuum is inconsistent with simple disk models extending to the soft X-rays. Instead, the soft-excess is well described by optically thick, low temperature, thermal Comptonization which may dominate the entire big blue bump. This might explain the observed tight UV/soft X-ray variability correlation and absence…
Using the Chandra/ACIS-I detector, we have identified an X-ray source (CXOU 132619.7-472910.8) in the globular cluster NGC 5139 with a thermal spectrum identical to that observed from transiently accreting neutron stars in quiescence. The absence of intensity variability on timescales as short as 4 seconds (< 25% rms variability) and as long as 5 years (<50% variability) supports the identification of this source as a neutron star, most likely maintained at a high effective temperature (approximately 1e6 K) by transient accretion from a binary companion. The ability to spectrally identify quie…
We study the variability of the warm absorber and the gas responsible for the emission lines in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548, in order to constrain the location and physical properties of these components. Using X-ray spectra taken with the \textit{Chandra}$-$LETGS in 2002 and 2005, we study variability in the ionic column densities and line intensities. We find a lower \ion{O}{vii} forbidden emission line flux in 2005, while the Fe K$α$ line flux stays constant. The warm absorber is less ionized in 2005, allowing us to constrain its location to within 7 pc of the central source. Using both t…
We present an analysis of recent XMM-Newton and HST archive data of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 1313 X-2. Quasi-simultaneous observations taken with XMM-Newton, HST and VLT allow us to study both the X-ray light curve and its correlation with the optical emission of the two proposed ULX counterparts. At the end of December 2003 the source experienced a short, but intense flare, reaching a maximum luminosity of ~10^40 erg/s. At the same time, the optical flux of both the suggested counterparts did not show pronounced variations (<30%). Assuming that the ULX emission is isotropic and taki…
We have characterized the energy-dependent X-ray variability properties of the Seyfert~1 galaxy NGC 3783 using archival XMM-Newton and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer data. The high-frequency fluctuation power spectral density function (PSD) slope is consistent with flattening towards higher energies. Light curve cross correlation functions yield no significant lags, but peak coefficients generally decrease as energy separation of the bands increases on both short and long timescales. We have measured the coherence between various X-ray bands over the temporal frequency range of 6e-8 to 1e-4 Hz; t…
New spectra of NGC 2992 from the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory show that this nearby AGN has changed its type classification to a Seyfert 2 in 2006. It was originally classified as a Seyfert 1.9, and has been previously seen as a Seyfert 1.5 with strong broad Halpha emission. A comparison of the reddening and equivalent hydrogen column density derived for the narrow-line region from these new data with those previously calculated for different regions closer to the nucleus shows them to be very similar, and suggests that these different regions are all being absorbed by the same opac…
We study the low-contrast Fe II emission blends in the ultraviolet (1250--2200A) and optical (4000--6000A) spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 and show that these features vary in flux and that these variations are correlated with those of the optical continuum. The amplitude of variability of the optical Fe II emission is 50% - 75% that of Hbeta and the ultraviolet Fe II emission varies with an even larger amplitude than Hbeta. However, accurate measurement of the flux in these blends proves to be very difficult even using excellent Fe II templates to fit the spectra. We are able to cons…
During the 1996 HST/FOS monitoring campaign of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516, the UV continuum showed a factor of 5 variation; correspondingly the strongest broad UV emission lines (e.g. Ly-alpha, CIV) displayed somewhat weaker, though still significant variations (a factor of 2). In contrast, no variation was detected in the strong broad MgII+UV FeII emission-line complex. While historically the flux in the broad MgII emission line has varied (a factor of 2 within a few years), the profile shape has not been observed to change over the past decade. In contrast, the high ionization lines (HILs…
We use a model-independent technique to investigate the nature of the 2-15 keV X-ray spectral variability in four Seyfert galaxies and distinguish between spectral pivoting and the two-component model for spectral variability. Our analysis reveals conclusively that the softening of the X-ray continuum with increasing flux in MCG -6-30-15 and NGC 3516 is a result of summing two spectral components: a soft varying component (SVC) with spectral shape independent of flux and a constant hard component (HCC). In contrast, the spectral variability in NGC 4051 can be well described by simple pivoting …
The Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 was observed for a week by Chandra using both the HETGS and LETGS spectrometers. In this paper we study the time variability of the continuum radiation. During our observation, the source showed a gradual increase in flux over four days, followed by a rapid decrease and flattening of the light curve afterwards. Superimposed upon these relatively slow variations several short duration bursts or quasi-periodic oscillations occured with a typical duration of several hours and separation between 0.6-0.9 days. The bursts show a delay of the hard X-rays with respect to …
We report results from a Suzaku observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 NGC 4051. During our observation, large amplitude rapid variability is seen and the averaged 2--10 keV flux is 8.1x10^-12 erg s^-1 cm^-2, which is several times lower than the historical average. The X-ray spectrum hardens when the source flux becomes lower, confirming the trend of spectral variability known for many Seyfert 1 galaxies. The broad-band averaged spectrum and spectra in high and low flux intervals are analyzed. The spectra are first fitted with a model consisting of a power-law component, a reflection contin…
We performed R-band time series observations of the young, metal rich open cluster NGC 2301 for 12 nights in Feb. 2004. B images were also obtained and color magnitude diagrams, having limits of R=19.5 and B=21.5, were produced. Only asmall effort was made to determine cluster membership as our magnitude limits are far deeper than previously published values. Our photometric precision, for the brightest 5 magnitudes of sources, is 1-2 mmag. We determine that for the $\sim$4000 stars which have time-series data, 56% are variable and of these, approximately 13% are observed to exhibit periodic l…
We discuss a model of the central source in Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. The model assumes a three phase disk structure consisting of a cold outer disk, a hot central disk constituting a Comptonizing X/gamma source, and an intermediate unstable and complex phase emitting a soft excess component. The model qualitatively explains broad-band spectrum and variability behavior assuming that the soft excess contributes significantly to the continuum emission and drives variability by geometrical changes of the intermediate disk zone.
We report the detection of optical and X-ray variability in the least luminous known Seyfert galaxy, NGC4395. The featureless continuum changed by a factor of 2 in 6 months, which is typical of more luminous AGN. The largest variation was seen at shorter wavelengths, so that the spectrum becomes `harder' during higher activity states. In a one week optical broad band monitoring program, a 20% change was seen between successive nights. In a 1 month period the spectral shape changed from a power law with spectral index alpha ~0 (characteristic of quasars) to a spectral index alpha ~2 (as observe…
We have obtained X-ray observations of the bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe) NGC 2346 and NGC 7026 with XMM-Newton. These observations detected diffuse X-ray emission from NGC 7026 but not from NGC 2346. The X-ray emission from NGC 7026 appears to be confined within the bipolar lobes of the PN and has spectral properties suggesting a thermal plasma emitting at a temperature of 1.1 +0.5/-0.2 times 10^6 K. The X-ray spectrum of NGC 7026 is modeled using nebular and stellar abundances to assess whether a significant amount of nebular material has been mixed into the shocked-wind, but the results of…
We present a detailed analysis on the variability of the Fe K emission line in NGC 4051 using ASCA data. Through simple Gaussian line fits, we find not only obvious Fe K line variability with no significant difference in the X-ray continuum flux between two ASCA observations which were separated by $\sim$ 440 days, but also rapid variability of Fe K line on time scales $\sim 10^4$ s within the second observation. During the second observation, the line is strong (EW = 733$^{+206}_{-219}$ eV) and broad ($σ= 0.96^{+0.49}_{-0.35}$ keV) when the source is brightest, and become weaker (EW = 165$^{+…
From the analysis of a ~100 ks Chandra observation of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1569, we have found that the X-ray point sources, CXOU 043048.1+645050 and CXOU 043048.6+645058, showed significant time variability. During this observation, the X-ray flux of CXOU 043048.1+645050 increased by 10 times in only 2 x 10^4 s. Since the spectrum in its bright phase was fitted with a disk blackbody model with kT_in ~0.43 keV and the bolometric luminosity is L_bol ~10^38 ergs s^-1, this source is an X-ray binary with a stellar mass black-hole. Since the spectrum in its faint phase was also fitted wi…
We present the final installment of an intensive 13-year study of variations of the optical continuum and broad H-beta emission line in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. The data base consists of 1530 optical continuum measurements and 1248 H-beta measurements. The H-beta variations follow the continuum variations closely, with a typical time delay of about 20 days. However, a year-by-year analysis shows that the magnitude of emission-line time delay is correlated with the mean continuum flux. We argue that the data are consistent with the simple model prediction that the size of the broad-line r…
We present over 6.5 years of frequent X-ray observations of the NLS1 galaxy NGC4051 by RXTE together with a >100ks observation by XMM-Newton and so derive a 2-10 keV PSD covering an unprecedent frequency range of over 6.5 decades from <10^-8 to >10^-2 Hz. This PSD is a very good match to the PSD of the galactic black hole binary system (GBH) Cyg X-1 when in a `high', rather than `low', state providing the first definite confirmation of an AGN in a `high' state. A bending, rather than sharply broken, powerlaw is a better description of the PSDs of Cyg X-1 in the high state and of NGC4051. At lo…
