New spectra of NGC 2992 from the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory show that this nearby AGN has changed its type classification to a Seyfert 2 in 2006. It was originally classified as a Seyfert 1.9, and has been previously seen as a Seyfert 1.5 with strong broad Halpha emission. A comparison of the reddening and equivalent hydrogen column density derived for the narrow-line region from these new data with those previously calculated for different regions closer to the nucleus shows them to be very similar, and suggests that these different regions are all being absorbed by the same opacity source, a large 100-pc scale dust lane running across the nucleus. However, obscuration by dust in this lane is probably not responsible for classification changes which occur in only a few years. It is more likely that NGC 2992's observed variations are due to a highly variable ionizing continuum. We therefore conclude that, although NGC 2992 was originally identified as a Seyfert 1.9, this was not because of an oblique viewing angle through the atmosphere of a central dusty torus, but because its active nucleus was identified when it was in a low continuum state.
We present near-infrared 1.5 - 2.5 micron moderate resolution long-slit spectra of two Seyfert 1 galaxies (NGC 1097 and NGC 1566), three Seyfert 2s (NGC 1386, NGC 4945 and NGC 5128) and one Seyfert 1.5 (NGC 3227), both parallel to ionization cone or jet and perpendicular to it. The spectra are used to study the spatial extent of the line emission, integrated masses of excited H2 and the excitation mechanisms of interstellar gas. Broad BrGgamma originating from the BLR is detected in three galaxies (NGC 1386, NGC 1566 and NGC 3227), of which NGC 1386 is optically classified as Seyfert 2. In the…
We report the transition towards a type 1 Seyfert experienced by the classical type 2 Seyfert nucleus in NGC 7582. The transition, found at most 20 days from its maximum peak, presents a unique opportunity to study these rare events in detail. At maximum the Ha line width is of about 12000 km/s. We examine three scenarios that could potentially explain the transition: capture of a star by a supermassive black hole, a reddening change in the surrounding torus, and the radiative onset of a type IIn supernova exploding in a compact nuclear/circumnuclear starburst.
We present Chandra ACIS-S observations of the enigmatic Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC4698. This object together with several other bona-fide Seyfert-2 galaxies show no absorption in the low spatial resolution ASCA data, in contrast to the standard unification models. Our Chandra observations of NGC4698 probe directly the nucleus allowing us to check whether nearby sources contaminate the ASCA spectrum. Indeed, the Chandra observations show that the ASCA spectrum is dominated by two nearby AGN. The X-ray flux of NGC4698 is dominated by a nuclear source with luminosity L(0.3-8 keV) ~ 10^39, erg s-1 coinc…
We have detected a broad H alpha emission line in the polarized flux spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 788, indicating that it contains an obscured Seyfert 1 nucleus. While such features have been observed in ~15 other Seyfert 2s, this example is unusual because it has a higher fraction of galaxy starlight in its spectrum, a lower average measured polarization, and a significantly lower radio luminosity than other hidden Seyfert 1s discovered to date. This demonstrates that polarized broad-line regions can be detected in relatively weak classical Seyfert 2s, and illustrates why well-defined…
We present CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) maps of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC3147 of the NUclei of GAlaxies (NUGA) sample at 1.8'' x 1.6'' and 1.4'' x 1.2'' resolution respectively. Identifying the presence of a bar in NGC3147 we also compute the gravity torques exerted from the stellar bar on the gas.
We have discovered polarized broad emission lines in five type 2 Seyfert galaxies (NGC 424, NGC 591, NGC 2273, NGC 3081, and NGC 4507), establishing that these objects are type 1 Seyferts obscured by dense circumnuclear material. The galaxies are part of a distance-limited sample of 31 Seyfert 2s, for which spectropolarimetric observations are now complete. Combined with published reports, our results indicate that at least 11 of the galaxies in this sample, or > 35%, possess hidden broad-line regions. This represents the first reliable estimate of the frequency of polarized broad emission lin…
We have conducted a high-resolution ``3D'' imaging survey of the CO(1--0), HCN(1--0), and HCO$^+$(1--0) lines toward the central a few kpc regions of the Seyfert and starburst galaxies in the local universe using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. We detected luminous HCN(1--0) emissions toward a considerable fraction of these Seyfert galaxies (10 of 12 in our sub-sample), which indicated that some of these Seyfert galaxies, such as NGC 3079, NGC 3227, NGC 4051, NGC 6764, and NGC 7479, are indeed accompanied with compact nuclear starburst, given the tight correlation between the HCN(1--0) luminosi…
Preliminary results of the RXTE observation of the Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC4507 are presented. The observed broadband [4-100 keV] spectrum is intrinsically hard (Gamma = 1.2); an iron line is detected with a relatively high equivalent width (EW = 400 eV). The remaining calibration uncertanties are briefly discussed, as well as the scientific implications of our results.
We present and discuss HST (WFPC2 and FOC) images and UV GHRS spectra plus ground-based near UV through to near IR spectra of three Seyfert 2 nuclei (NGC 7130, NGC 5135 and IC 3639). These galaxies, together to Mrk 477, were selected from a bigger sample that comprises the 20 brightest Seyfert 2 nuclei, with the goal to study the origin of the UV-optical-near IR featureless continuum in Seyfert 2 nuclei. These four galaxies have bolometric luminosities, as computed with the four IRAS bands, of 10^11 Lsol. They are close enough to be resolved with HST the nuclear zone. This makes these Seyfert …
We have discovered an extremely broad, double-peaked H-alpha emission line in the polarized flux spectrum of NGC 2110, establishing that this well-studied Seyfert 2 galaxy contains a disk-like hidden broad-line region (BLR). Several properties of NGC 2110 suggest that it is an obscured twin of Arp 102B, the prototypical double-peaked emission-line active galactic nucleus (AGN). A comparison between our data and previous spectra of NGC 2110 indicates that the double-peaked H-alpha feature is transient. The presence of a disk-like BLR in NGC 2110 has important implications for AGNs: it expands t…
We present evidence of flux variability, on both short (hours) and long (months) time scales of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7172. These results are based on the ASCA observation of NGC 7172 performed on May 1996. The source was detected at a rather low flux level, about 3 times fainter than its usual state (including one year before, when it was also observed by ASCA). The source also varied by about 30 percent during the observation, confirming the presence of a type 1 nucleus in its center. However, its spectrum appears to be flatter than the typical Seyfert 1 spectrum (in agreement with findin…
The Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2110 has been observed with BeppoSAX between 0.5 and 150 keV. The high energy instrument onboard, PDS, has succeeded in measuring for the first time the spectrum of this source in the 13-150 keV range. The PDS spectrum, having a photon index Gamma~1.86 is fully compatible with that expected from a Seyfert 1 nucleus. In the framework of unified models, the harder (Gamma~1.67) 2-10 keV spectrum is well explained assuming the presence of a complex partial + total absorber (Nh~30x10^22 cm^-2 x25% + Nh~4x10^22 cm^-2 x100%). The high column density of this complex absorber i…
We present an XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert-LINER galaxy NGC 7213. The RGS soft X-ray spectrum is well fitted with a power law plus soft X-ray collisionally ionised thermal plasma (kT = 0.18 +0.03/-0.01 keV). We confirm the presence of Fe I, XXV and XXVI K-alpha emission in the EPIC spectrum and set tighter constraints on their equivalent widths of 82 +10/-13, 24 +9/-11 and 24 +10/-13 eV respectively. We compare the observed properties together with the inferred mass accretion rate of NGC 7213, to those of other Seyfert and LINER galaxies. We find that NGC 7213 has intermediate X-ray s…
An imaging survey of CO(1-0), HCN(1-0), and HCO$^+$(1-0) lines in the centers of nearby Seyfert galaxies has been conducted using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and the RAINBOW interferometer. Preliminary results reveal that 3 Seyferts out of 7 show abnormally high HCN/CO and HCN/HCO$^+$ ratios, which cannot occur even in nuclear starburst galaxies. We suggest that the enhanced HCN emission originated from X-ray irradiated dense obscuring tori, and that these molecular line ratios can be a new diagnostic tool to search for ``pure'' AGNs. According to our HCN diagram, we suggest that NGC 1068, N…
Preliminary analysis of the X-ray spectrum of NGC 1068 obtained by the RGS spectrometer on board XMM-Newton is presented. A physically consistent model is developed in order to quantitatively describe the reprocessing of the central AGN continuum source into the discrete X-ray emission observed in Seyfert 2 galaxies. All the important atomic processes are taken into account, including photoexcitation, which has been neglected in some previous models. The model fits the high resolution NGC 1068 data very well, which implies that the contribution of hot collisional gas to the X-ray spectrum of N…
We report redshift measurements of 5 X-ray emitting blue stellar objects (BSO's) located less than 12 arc min from the X-ray Seyfert galaxy, NGC 3516. We find these quasars to be distributed along the minor axis of the galaxy and to show a very good correlation between their redshift and their angular distance from NGC 3516. Moreover the redshifts of these 5 quasars are: 0.33, 0.69, 0.93, 1.40 and 2.10 which are very near the peaks of the redshift periodicity distribution (i.e. z=0.3, 0.6, 0.96, 1.41 and 1.96). All these observed properties strikingly confirm, around this single example of a S…
We present the results of timing analysis of the XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 6300. The hard X-ray spectrum above 2 keV consists of a Compton-thin-absorbed power law, as is often seen in Seyfert 2 galaxies. We clearly detected rapid time variability on a time scale of about 1000 s from the light curve above 2 keV. The excess variance of the time variability (sigma2_RMS) is calculated to be ~0.12, and the periodogram of the light curve is well represented by a power law function with a slope of 1.75. In contrast with previous results from Seyfert 2 nuclei, these variabilit…
The central kpc region of the low luminosity type-1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 1097 has been observed in the CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0) lines with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and the NRO 45 m telescope. We find a striking enhancement of the HCN emission toward the active nucleus of NGC 1097; a large fraction of the CO emission comes from the circumnuclear starburst ring (r = 10" or 700 pc at D = 14.5 Mpc), whereas the HCN emission is dominated by a strong unresolved peak at the nucleus. The HCN-to-CO integrated intensity ratio in brightness temperature scale is about 0.11 in the aperture of the 45 m teles…
In this paper, a BeppoSAX observation of the bright Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC6300 is presented. The rapidly variable emission from the active nucleus is seen through a Compton-thin (NH ~ 3x10^23 atomoms/cm/cm) absorber. A Compton-reflection component with an unusually high reflection fraction (R ~ 4.2), and the comparison with a reflection-dominated spectrum measured by RXTE two and half years earlier suggest that NGC6300 belongs to the class of "transient" AGN, undergoing long and repeated periods of low-activity. The spectral transition provides support to the idea that Compton-thick and Compton-…
We present sensitive, high angular resolution (6" x 5") 21-cm observations of the neutral hydrogen in the nearby barred Seyfert galaxy, NGC4151. These HI observations, obtained using the VLA in B-configuration, are the highest resolution to date of this galaxy, and reveal hitherto unprecedented detail in the distribution and kinematics of the HI on sub-kiloparsec scales. A complete analysis and discussion of the HI data are presented and the global properties of the galaxy are related to the bar dynamics presented in Paper I.
We present preliminary results of the Johnson-Cousins (U)BVRI surface brightness profile decompositions of the Seyfert galaxies Mrk 79 and NGC 5548. The profiles were modelled as a sum of a Gaussian law for the nucleus, a Sersic law for the bulge and an exponent law for the disk. A flat bar was added to the model profile of Mrk 79. The parameters and the total magnitudes of the structural components were derived.
We present an imaging survey of the CO(1--0), HCN(1--0), and HCO$^+$(1--0) lines in the nearby Seyfert galaxies using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and RAINBOW Interferometer. Some of the observed Seyfert galaxies including NGC 1068, NGC 1097, NGC 5033, and NGC 5194 exhibit strong HCN(1--0) emission on a few 100 pc scales. The observed HCN(1--0)/CO(1--0) and HCN(1--0)/HCO$^+$(1--0) line ratios in the Seyfert nuclei ($>$0.2 and $>$1.8, respectively) have never been observed in the central regions of nuclear starburst galaxies. On the other hand, the molecular line ratios in the nuclei of NGC 30…
Detailed modeling of the different regions of NGC 7130 is presented, accounting for its composite nature of AGN and starburst galaxy. Shock waves, created by stellar winds from hot massive stars and by supernova ejecta, are evident in the continuum and line spectra emitted from the clouds. The AGN starburst connection is discussed on the basis of model results, considering in particular the distribution of densities and velocities throughout the galaxy.
We report on simultaneous optical and X-ray observations of the Seyfert galaxy, NGC3147. The XMM-Newton spectrum shows that the source is unabsorbed in the X-rays ($N_H<5\times10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$). On the other hand, no broad lines are present in the optical spectrum. The origin of this optical/X-rays misclassification (with respect to the Unification Model) cannot be attributed to variability, since the observations in the two bands are simultaneous. Moreover, a Compton-thick nature of the object can be rejected on the basis of the low equivalent width of the iron K$α$ line ($\simeq130$ eV) an…
We present optical broad band B-I colour maps of a further sample of 10 Seyfert 2 galaxies. In these bands, the contribution from emission lines to the total flux is small, and hence the images predominantly trace the continuum distribution. As in our earlier colour maps of a sample of Seyferts type 1 and 2, we detect extended blue continuum components in the circumnuclear region of several galaxies. These components are either elongated (in Mkn 533, Mkn 607, Mkn 1066, NGC 5347, NGC 5953 and NGC 7319) or form a double structure across the nucleus (in NGC 5929). They are closely aligned with th…
Recent results on the X-ray spectrum and variability of Seyfert 1 galaxies are reviewed. New spectral results from BeppoSAX observations are also presented and briefly discussed.
The Seyfert galaxy NGC 6814 is a highly variable X-ray source despite the fact that it has recently been shown not to be the source of periodic variability. The 1.5 year monitoring by ROSAT has revealed a long term downward trend of the X-ray flux and an episode of high and rapidly varying flux (e.g. by a factor of about 3 in 8 hours) during the October 1992 PSPC observation. Temporal analysis of this data using both Fourier and autoregressive techniques have shown that the variability timescales are larger than a few hundred seconds. The behavior at higher frequencies can be described by whit…
We present spatial, temporal and spectral analyses of ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxies Ark 564, NGC 985, Kaz 163, Mrk 79 and RX J2256.6+0525. Ark 564 is a powerful narrow-line Seyfert 1 with strong Fe II emission. Several similar narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies have recently been found to have remarkably steep soft X-ray continua as well as rapid X-ray variability. We find that Ark 564 also has a very steep ($Γ> 3$) 0.1--2.5 keV spectrum and varies by $\sim 20$ per cent in 1500 s. We examine models for Ark 564 in light of both its X-ray…
Improved analysis of ultraviolet and optical monitoring data on the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 provides evidence for the existence of a supermassive, (8.7+/-1.1)x10^6 M_sun, black hole in this galaxy. By using recalibrated spectra from the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite and ground-based optical data, as well as refined techniques of reverberation mapping analysis, we have reduced the statistical uncertainties in the response of the emission lines to variations in the ionizing continuum. The different time lags in the emission line responses indicate a stratification in the ionizat…
This letter presents incontrovertible evidence that NGC5506 is a Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1). Our new 0.9-1.4 micron spectrum of its nucleus clearly shows the permitted OI 1.1287 micron line (with full width at half maximum <2000 km/s) and the `1 micron FeII lines'. These lines can only originate in the optically-thick broad line region (BLR) and, among Seyfert nuclei the latter series of lines are seen only in NLSy1s. The obscuration to the BLR, derived from a rough estimate of the OI 1.1287 micron / OI 8446 Angstrom ratio and from the reddening of the near-IR Paschen lines, is A_v > 5. Tog…
We present the results of a near-infrared and X-ray study of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 3281. Emission from the Seyfert nucleus is detected in both regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, allowing us to infer both the equivalent line of sight hydrogen column density, N_H = 71.0(+11.3,-12.3)e26/m^2 and the extinction due to dust, A_V = 22+/-11 magnitudes (90% confidence intervals). We infer a ratio of N_H/A_V which is an order of magnitude larger than that determined along lines of sight in the Milky Way and discuss possible interpretations. We consider the most plausible explanation to be a den…
We present near-infrared spectra with resolutions of lambda/dlambda~1200 in the emission lines of Pa-beta, [FeII] (1.2567um), Br-gamma, and H2 v=1-0S(1) of the nuclei and circumnuclear regions of the four Seyfert 2 galaxies Mk 1066, NGC 2110, NGC 4388, and Mk 3. All of these galaxies show strong near-infrared line emission that is detected at radii several times the spatial resolution, corresponding to projected physical scales of 0.07 to 0.7 kpc. Velocity gradients are detected in these nuclei, as are spatial variations in line profiles and flux ratios. We compare the spatial and velocity dis…
An analysis of survey and pointed ROSAT PSPC observations of the Seyfert 1.8 galaxy NGC 3786 has revealed interesting spectral and temporal behaviour. The spectrum is found to show clear signs of excess absorption, and there is evidence that part (or all) of it is caused by the presence of a warm absorber. The soft X-ray spectral properties are discussed in the context of the Sy 1.8 classification of NGC 3786, and are combined with published optical data in an effort to discriminate between several possible absorption models. The one involving a warm absorber with internal dust, located betwee…
We present a series of RXTE observations of the nearby obscured Seyfert galaxies ESO103-G35, IC5063, NGC4507 and NGC7172. The period of monitoring ranges from seven days for NGC7172 up to about seven months for ESO103-G035. The spectra of all galaxies are well fit with a highly obscured (N_H>10^23 cm-2) power-law and an Fe line at 6.4 keV. We find strong evidence for the presence of a reflection component in ESO103-G35 and NGC4507. The observed flux presents strong variability on day timescales in all objects. Spectral variability is also detected in the sense that the spectrum steepens with i…
Scanning and pointed RXTE observations of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 6300 reveal that it is a source of hard X-ray continuum and large equivalent width Fe K$α$ emission. These properties are characteristic of Compton-reflection dominated Seyfert 2 galaxies. The continuum can be modeled as Compton-reflection; subsolar iron abundance is required and a high inclination preferred. However, the poor energy resolution of RXTE means that this description is not unique, and the continuum can also be modeled using a ``dual absorber'', i.e. a sum of absorbed power laws. Observations with higher ene…
We use the full broad-band XMM-Newton EPIC data to examine the X-ray spectrum of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, previously shown to be complex with the X-ray continuum being a sum of components reflected/scattered from cold (neutral) and warm (ionised) matter, together with associated emission line spectra. We quantify the neutral and ionised reflectors in terms of the luminosity of the hidden nucleus. Both are relatively weak, a result we interpret on the Unified Seyfert Model by a near side-on view to the putative torus, reducing the visibility of the illuminated inner surface of the …
An analysis of the X-ray variability of the low luminosity Seyfert nucleus NGC 4395, based on a long XMM-Newton observation, is presented. The power spectrum shows a clear break from a flat spectrum (alpha ~ 1) to a steeper spectrum (alpha ~ 2) at a frequency f_br = 0.5 - 3.0 * 10^-3 Hz, comparable to the highest characteristic frequency found previously in a Seyfert galaxy. This extends the measured M_BH-f_br values to lower M_BH than previous studies of Seyfert galaxies, and is consistent with an inverse scaling of variability frequency with black hole mass. The variations observed are among…
We compile the multi-band spectral energy distribution (SED) of Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC4593, and investigate its optical-to-ultraviolet (OUV) continuum and iron Kαline profile. No strong ``big blue bump'' is found in OUV band. The iron Kαline profile is not as broad as expected from a disk which extends down to the last stable orbit. Both of them can be modeled by a truncated thin disk, and support the existence of a truncated thin disk in the system. It is of much interest that NGC4593 may be a typical object with an accretion rate \dot{m}=\dot{M}/M_{Edd} \sim 0.01-0.1 and harbors a two componen…
We examine the XMM X-ray spectrum of the LINER-AGN NGC 7213, which is best fit with a power law, K-alpha emission lines from Fe I, Fe XXV and Fe XXVI and a soft X-ray collisionally ionised thermal plasma with kT=0.18 +0.03/-0.01 keV. We find a luminosity of 7x10^(-4) L_Edd, and a lack of soft X-ray excess emission, suggesting a truncated accretion disc. NGC 7213 has intermediate X-ray spectral properties, between those of the weak AGN found in the LINER M81 and higher luminosity Seyfert galaxies. This supports the notion of a continuous sequence of X-ray properties from the Galactic Centre thr…
We use X-ray monitoring data obtained over a broad range of time-scales to measure the broadband power spectral density functions (PSDs) of two Seyfert galaxies, the broad line Seyfert 1 NGC 3227 and the Seyfert 2 NGC 5506, which has recently been identified as an obscured Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS 1). Using a Monte-Carlo fitting technique we demonstrate that both PSDs are reminiscent of the PSD of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) in the high/soft state, and specifically rule out a low/hard state PSD shape in NGC 3227. This result demonstrates that, at least where variability is concerned, …
We report on X-ray emission from the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC4388 observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. A hard X-ray peak is found at the position of the active nucleus suggested by optical and radio observations. Extended soft X-ray emission correlates well with the ionization cone found in optical line emission. A large soft X-ray extension is found up to 16 kpc to the north of the galaxy. Photoionized gas with low ionization parameters (xi<3) appears to be the likely explanation of this emission. The same ionized gas clouds could be responsible for the optical [OIII] emission. Fe K line …
We report on observations of the narrow line Seyfert galaxy NGC 5506 with the Rossi X-ray TIming Explorer. The observations cover a time interval of ~1000 days during which the source showed strong flux and spectral variability. The spectrum clearly shows iron fluorescence emission at 6.4 keV and significant reflection features. Both the equivalent width of the iron line and the relative strength of the reflected continuum are higher during low flux states. The variability of the reflection features can be explained by the presence of two reflected components: one that responds rapidly to flux…
We present CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) maps of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 5728. Although a stellar nuclear bar structure is clearly identified in the near-infrared images in the central 10", inside the ring identified as the ILR of the primary bar, there is no nuclear bar structure in the molecular gas. Instead, the CO emission reveals an elongated structure, 15" in length, beginning at the nucleus (defined by the radio center) aligned with the jet/ionisation cone, at a PA of 127 degrees. This morphology, not frequently observed in Seyfert galaxies, may be interpreted in terms of enhanced CO excitation al…
We present a high spatial and spectral resolution 2-D echelle spectrogram of the Narrow-Line Region in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC1386. This Seyfert galaxy was observed with CASPEC in the wavelength range 5270-7725 Angstrom which covers the H-alpha and the [N II] lines. With the use of spatially high resolved images taken with the WFPC2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope we could identify individual components of the Narrow-Line Region in our spectra. A Gaussian decomposition of the spectra revealed 9 distinct emission-line complexes. The brightest component is blue-shifted by -120+-10 km/s with r…
We present our recent spectrophotometric results of the infrared luminous Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7679. We find compelling evidence of the presence of a recent nuclear starburst, revealed by the observations of a) the spectral features of high order Balmer absorption lines, b) the weak equivalent widths for CaIIK $λ$3933, CN $λ$4200, G-band $λ$4300 and MgIb $λ$5173, and c) the suggested UV stellar wind resonance lines (N V $λ$1240, Si IV $λ$1400 and C IV $λ$1550) in the IUE spectrum. Using the simple stellar population synthesis model, we find that in the nuclear 2" $\times$ 2" region, the contri…
We report EVN, MERLIN and VLBA observations at 18 cm, 6 cm and 3.6 cm of the Seyfert galaxies NGC 7674, NGC 5506, NGC 2110 and Mrk 1210 to study their structure and proper motions on pc scales and to add some constraints on the many possible causes of the radio-quietness of Seyferts. The component configurations in NGC 7674 and NGC 2110 are simple, linear structures, whereas the configurations in NGC 5506 and Mrk 1210 have multiple components with no clear axis of symmetry. We suggest that NGC 7674 is a low-luminosity compact symmetric object. Comparing the images at different epochs, we find …
We analyze published reverberation mapping data for three Seyfert galaxies (NGC 3227, NGC 3516, and NGC 4593) to refine the mass estimate for the supermassive black hole in the center of each object. Treatment of the data in a manner more consistent with other large compilations of such masses allows us to more securely compare our results to wider samples of data, e.g., in the investigation of the M_bh-sigma relationship for active and quiescent galaxies.
We discuss BeppoSAX observations and archive ASCA data of NGC 7679, a nearby, nearly face-on SB0 galaxy in which starburst and AGN activities coexist. The X-ray observations reveal a bright (L_{0.1-50 keV} \sim 2.9 \times 10^{43} erg s^{-1}) and variable source having a minimum observed doubling/halving time scale of \sim 10 - 20 ksec. A simple power law with photon index of Γ\sim 1.75 and small absorption (N_H < 4\times 10^{20} cm^{-2}) can reproduce the NGC 7679 spectrum from 0.1 up to 50 keV. These X-ray properties are unambiguous signs of Seyfert 1 activity in the nucleus of NGC 7679. The …
We present VLA maps of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7319 at 3.6, 6, and 20 cm. Sub-arcsecond resolution is achieved at 3.6 and 6 cm. The radio emission exhibits a triple structure on a scale of ~4'' (1.7 kpc). All three components have steep spectra, consistent with synchrotron radiation. We have also analyzed an HST archival, broad-band red image, which contains structure related to the radio components. In particular, a V-shaped feature in the HST image some 3.7'' (1.6 kpc) southwest of the nucleus is associated with highly blueshifted emission lines seen in ground-based spectra. We interpret th…
We present strong evidence for variability of the flux of the iron K$α$ emission line in the Seyfert 1 galaxy, NGC 3516. Two ASCA observations, separated by $\sim 1$~yr, showed a marked decrease in continuum flux by $\sim 60$~per cent. The flux in the broad, iron K$α$ line decreased by the same factor in this time period, with no evidence for changes in the line profile. The line variability is significant at $>99$~per cent confidence and rules out models in which the line is produced in a molecular torus located at $>1$~pc from the nucleus. An accretion disk is considerably more likely.
We investigate the X-ray spectra of the type-2 Seyfert galaxies NGC 7172 and ESO 103-G35, using BeppoSAX observations, separated by approximately one year. We find that the X-ray spectra of both NGC 7172 and ESO 103-G35 can be well fitted using a power-law model with an Fe K emission line at 6.4 keV. We did not find any statistically significant evidence for the existence of a reflection component in the X-ray spectra of these two galaxies. The continuum flux has decreased by a factor of approximately two during this period, in both objects. However, the spectral index as well as the absorptio…
The Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7674 has been observed within the BeppoSAX Core Programme with the onboard narrow field instruments between 0.1 and 100 keV. The broad-band spectrum shows four most relevant spectral components: a) a soft excess below ~2 keV; b) a prominent (EW~1 keV) Fe line; c) a flat (Gamma~1.1) 2-10 keV continuum; d) a 4.5sigma detection above 13 keV. The flat power law spectrum can be very well explained within the current AGN unified models assuming a steep (Gamma~2) intrinsic spectrum scattered by warm gas for the low energy band and totally reflected by optically thick cold mat…
We present the results of two observations of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516, obtained with BeppoSAX in 1996 November and 1997 March. Useful signal is detected between 0.2 and 60 keV, allowing for the first time the simultaneous observation of all main spectral features. The source was brighter by a factor 2 at the second epoch of observation. Both spectra present a strong Fe Kalpha line, and a reflection hump at high energy. An absorption edge at 0.8 keV is visible in the later spectrum, but not in the earlier one, indicating that this feature is strongly variable.
In discussing the short-time variability of extragalactic X-ray sources, we focus on explaining how wavelet transform in conjunction with non-linear filtering methods are used to remove Poisson statistics and wobble-related variability from the data. This enables the resolution of their intrinsic stochastic, quasi-periodic and deterministic variable components, as well the determination of their persistence. As detailed examples we review and extend the application of these techniques to ROSAT data for the Seyfert I galaxy NGC 5548 and for the QSO 3C273. Besides illustrating the discriminating…
In order to improve the reverberation-mapping based estimate of the mass of the central supermassive black hole in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151, we have reanalyzed archival ultraviolet monitoring spectra from two campaigns undertaken with the International Ultraviolet Explorer. We measure emission-line time delays for four lines, C IV 1549, He II 1640, C III] 1909, and Mg II 2798, from both campaigns. We combine these measurements with the dispersion of the variable part of each respective emission line to obtain the mass of the central object. Despite the problematic nature of some of the da…
The NRAO VLBA was used at 1.4 GHz to image the inner 550 mas (23 lt-years) of the nearest known Seyfert 1 nucleus, in the Sm galaxy NGC 4395. One continuum source was detected, with flux density $530\pm130 μ$Jy, diameter d<11 mas (0.46 lt-year), and brightness temperature $T_{\rm b} > 2.0\times10^6$ K. The spectral power $P$ of the VLBA source is intermediate between those of Sagittarius A and Sagittarius A$^*$ in the Galactic Center. For the VLBA source in NGC 4395, the constraints on $T_b$, $d$, and $P$ are consistent with an origin from a black hole but exclude an origin from a compact star…
We present X-ray (ROSAT), infrared, and radio observations of NGC 4395, which harbors the optically least luminous type 1 Seyfert nucleus discovered thus far. In combination with published optical and ultraviolet spectra, we have used these data to assemble the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) of the galaxy's nucleus. Interestingly, the SED of NGC 4395 differs markedly from the SEDs of both quasars and typical low-luminosity active galactic nuclei, which may be a manifestation of the different physical conditions (i.e., black hole masses, accretion rates, and/or accretion modes) th…
Morphological disturbances and gas kinematics of the SB0 galaxy NGC 7679=Arp 216 are investigated to get clues to the history of this highly composite object, where AGN and starburst signatures dominate each other in the X-ray and optical/IR regime, respectively. Perturbations of the ionized gas velocity field appear quite mild within 15'' (~5 kpc) from the center, so as it can be straightforwardly modeled as a circularly rotating disk. On the contrary, outside that radius, significant disturbances show up. In particular, the eastern distorted arm as well as the huge neutral hydrogen bridge co…
We present results from HST/STIS long-slit spectroscopy of the gas motions in the nuclear region of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5252. The observed velocity field is consistent with gas in regular rotation with superposed localized patches of disturbed gas. The dynamics of the circumnuclear gas can be accurately reproduced by adding to the stellar mass component a compact dark mass of MBH = 0.95 (-0.45;+1.45) 10E9 M(sun), very likely a supermassive black hole. Contrarily to results obtained in similar studies rotational broadening is sufficient to reproduce also the behaviour of line widths. The M…
We present new results from a Chandra HETG observation of NGC 5548 and give a comparison of absorption and emission features found in other Seyfert 1 galaxies using Chandra grating observations. Deep soft X-ray edges are seen in Mkn 509 and NGC 3783, consistent with ASCA data. In NGC 5548 and NGC 4501 the edges are weak but consistent with the low column densities. We show that the detection of a narrow, probably non-disk, component of the iron line is very common. However, just as importantly, it is not detected in some cases. We show the effect of removing this narrow component from the ASCA…
