We establish a general result about extending a right invertible row over a Banach algebra to an invertible matrix. This is applied to the computation of right topological stable rank of a split exact sequence. We also introduce a quantitative measure of stable rank. These results are applied to compute the right (left) topological stable rank for all nest algebras. This value is either 2 or infinity, and rtsr(T(N)) = 2 occurs only when N is of ordinal type less than omega^2 and the dimensions of the atoms grows sufficiently quickly. We introduce general results on `partial matrix algebras' over a Banach algebra. This is used to obtain an inequality akin to Rieffel's formula for matrix algebras over a Banach algebra. This is used to give further insight into the nest case.
The main theorem provides a characterisation of the finite rank operators lying in a norm closed Lie ideal of a continuous nest algebra. These operators are charaterised as those finite rank operators in the nest algebra satisfying a condition determined by a left order continuous homomorphism on the nest. A crucial fact used in the proof of this theorem is the decomposability of the finite rank operators. One shows that a finite rank operator in a norm closed Lie ideal of a continuous nest algebra can be written as a finite sum of rank one operators lying in the ideal.
Let N be a nest on a Hilbert space H and AlgN the corresponding nest algebra. We determine the hypocompact radical of AlgN . Other topological radicals are also characterized.
We provide a negative solution to a question of M. Rieffel who asked if the right and left topological stable ranks of a Banach algebra must always agree. Our example is found amongst a class of nest algebras. We show that for many other nest algebras, both the left and right topological stable ranks are infinite. We extend this latter result to Popescu's non-commutative disc algebras and to free semigroup algebras as well.
In this paper we study the nest representations of a strongly maximal TAF algebra, whose ranges contain non-zero compact operators. We introduce a particular class of such representations, the essential nest representations, and we show that their kernels coincide with the completely meet irreducible ideals. From this we deduce that there exist enough contractive nest representations, with non-zero compact operators in their range, to separate the points. Using nest representation theory, we also give a coordinate-free description of the fundamental groupoid for strongly maximal TAF algebras. …
Various notions of stable ranks are studied for topological algebras. Some partial answers to R.G. Swan's problem (Have two Banach or good Fréchet algebras as in the density theorem in K-theory the same stable rank ?) are obtained. For example, a Fréchet dense $\ast$-subalgebra $A$ of a $C^\ast$-algebra $B$, closed under $C^\infty$-functional calculus of self-adjoint elements, has the same Bass stable rank as $B$.
We introduce the notion of a topological higher-rank graph, a unified generalization of the higher-rank graph and the topological graph. Using groupoid techniques, we define the Toeplitz and Cuntz-Krieger algebras of topological higher-rank graphs, and show that the $C^*$-algebras defined are coherent with the existing theory.
We provide groupoid models for Toeplitz and Cuntz-Krieger algebras of topological higher-rank graphs. Extending the groupoid models used in the theory of graph algebras and topological dynamical systems to our setting, we prove results on essential freeness and amenability of the groupoids which capture the existing theory, and extend results involving group crossed products of graph algebras.
We consider the boundary-path groupoids of topological higher-rank graphs. We show that the all such groupoids are topologically amenable. We deduce that the C*-algebras of topological higher-rank graphs are nuclear and prove versions of the gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem and the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem. We then provide a necessary and sufficient condition for simplicity of a topological higher-rank graph C*-algebra, and a condition under which it is also purely infinite.
We study dimension theory for the $C^*$-algebras of row-finite $k$-graphs with no sources. We establish that strong aperiodicity - the higher-rank analogue of condition (K) - for a $k$-graph is necessary and sufficient for the associated $C^*$-algebra to have topological dimension zero. We prove that a purely infinite $2$-graph algebra has real-rank zero if and only if it has topological dimension zero and satisfies a homological condition that can be characterised in terms of the adjacency matrices of the $2$-graph. We also show that a $k$-graph $C^*$-algebra with topological dimension zero i…
We study Sims-Yeend's product system C*-algebras and topological higher-rank graph C*-algebras by Yeend. We give a relation between Katsura's Cuntz-Pimsner covariance and Sims-Yeend's one by a direct approach and an explicit form of the core of product system C*-algebras. Finally, we prove Cuntz-Krieger type uniqueness theorem for topological higher-rank graph C*-algebras under certain aperiodic condition.
We give a classification theorem for unital separable simple nuclear $C^*$-algebras with tracial topological rank zero which satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem. We prove that if $A$ and $B$ are two such $C^*$-algebras and $$ (K_0(A), K_0(A)_+, [1_A], K_1(A)) $$ $$ \cong (K_0(B), K_0(B)_+, [1_B], K_1(B)), $$ then $A\cong B.$
Let $1 \in A \subset B$ be an inclusion of C*-algebras of C*-index-finite type with depth 2. We try to compute topological stable rank of $B$ ($= \tsr(B)$) when $A$ has topological stable rank one. We show that $\tsr(B) \leq 2$ when $A$ is a tsr boundedly divisible algebra, in particular, $A$ is a C*-minimal tensor product $UHF \otimes D$ with $\tsr(D) = 1$. When $G$ is a finite group and $α$ is an action of $G$ on UHF, we know that a crossed product algebra $UHF \rtimes_αG$ has topological stable rank less than or equal to two. These results are affirmative datum to a generalization of a ques…
A Cantor minimal system is of finite topological rank if it has a Bratteli-Vershik representation whose number of vertices per level is uniformly bounded. We prove that if the topological rank of a minimal dynamical system on a Cantor set is finite then all its minimal Cantor factors have finite topological rank as well. This gives an affirmative answer to a question posed by Donoso, Durand, Maass, and Petite.
We investigate topological realizations of higher-rank graphs. We show that the fundamental group of a higher-rank graph coincides with the fundamental group of its topological realization. We also show that topological realization of higher-rank graphs is a functor, and that for each higher-rank graph Λ, this functor determines a category equivalence between the category of coverings of Λ and the category of coverings of its topological realization. We discuss how topological realization relates to two standard constructions for k-graphs: projective limits and crossed products by finitely gen…
We investigate which topological spaces can be constructed as topological realisations of higher-rank graphs. We describe equivalence relations on higher-rank graphs for which the quotient is again a higher-rank graph, and show that identifying isomorphic co-hereditary subgraphs in a disjoint union of two rank-$k$ graphs gives rise to pullbacks of the associated $C^*$-algebras. We describe a combinatorial version of the connected-sum operation and apply it to the rank-2-graph realisations of the four basic surfaces to deduce that every compact 2-manifold is the topological realisation of a ran…
We use product systems of $C^*$-correspondences to introduce twisted $C^*$-algebras of topological higher-rank graphs. We define the notion of a continuous $\mathbb{T}$-valued $2$-cocycle on a topological higher-rank graph, and present examples of such cocycles on large classes of topological higher-rank graphs. To every proper, source-free topological higher-rank graph $Λ$, and continuous $\mathbb{T}$-valued $2$-cocycle $c$ on $Λ$, we associate a product system $X$ of $C_0(Λ^0)$-correspondences built from finite paths in $Λ$. We define the twisted Cuntz--Krieger algebra $C^*(Λ,c)$ to be the C…
We give a classification theorem for unital separable nuclear simple \CA s with tracial rank no more than one. Let $A$ and $B$ be two unital separable simple nuclear \CA s with $TR(A), TR(B)\le 1$ which satisfy the universal coefficient theorem. We show that $A\cong B$ if and only if $$ (K_0(A), K_0(A)_+, [1_A], K_1(A), T(A)) \cong (K_0(B), K_0(B)_+, [1_B], K_1(B), T(B)). $$
We consider the amenability of groupoids $G$ equipped with a group valued cocycle $c:G\to Q$ with amenable kernel $c^{-1}(e)$. We prove a general result which implies, in particular, that $G$ is amenable whenever $Q$ is amenable and if there is countable set $D\subset G$ such that $c(G^{u})D=Q$ for all $u\in G^{(0)}$. We show that our result is applicable to groupoids arising from partial semigroup actions. We explore these actions in detail and show that these groupoids include those arising from directed graphs, higher rank graphs and even topological higher rank graphs. We believe our metho…
A set of meet-irreducible ideals is described for a class of maximal triangular almost finite algebras. This set forms a topological space under the hull-kernel closure, and there is a one-to-one correspondence between closed sets in this space and ideals in the AF algebra. Some connections with nest representations and nest-primitive ideals are also described.
We show that, if a simple $C^{*}$-algebra $A$ is topologically finite-dimensional in a suitable sense, then not only $K_{0}(A)$ has certain good properties, but $A$ is even accessible to Elliott's classification program. More precisely, we prove the following results: If $A$ is simple, separable and unital with finite decomposition rank and real rank zero, then $K_{0}(A)$ is weakly unperforated. If $A$ has finite decomposition rank, real rank zero and the space of extremal tracial states is compact and zero-dimensional, then $A$ has stable rank one and tracial rank zero. As a consequence, if $…
