Motivated by the observation of a giant Nernst effect in URu_2Si_2, the thermoelectric response of the related system UPt_2Si_2 was investigated using thermal and electric transport properties such as the Nernst and Seebeck effects, thermal conductivity, Hall effect and electrical resitivity. Unlike URu_2Si_2, UPt_2Si_2 is neither superconducting nor exhibits a ``hidden-order'' state. Nevertheless a pronounced Nernst effect anomaly is found to coincide with the onset of the antiferromagnetic order in UPt_2Si_2. Although the absolute values are substantially lower, its appearance and characteristics can favorably be compared to the giant Nernst effect in URu_2Si_2 indicating the common feature of a partial Fermi surface gap.
We have measured Hall effect, magnetotransport and magnetostriction on the field induced phases of single crystalline UPt$_2$Si$_2$ in magnetic fields up to 60\,T at temperatures down to 50\,mK. For the magnetic field applied along the $c$ axis we observe strong changes in the Hall effect at the phase boundaries. From a comparison to band structure calculations utilizing the concept of a dual nature of the uranium 5$f$ electrons, we find evidence for field induced topological changes of the Fermi surface due to at least one Lifshitz transition. Furthermore, we find a unique history dependence …
Combining old and new de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) and magnetoresistance data, we arrive at a detailed picture of the Fermi surface of the heavy fermion superconductor UPt3. Our work was partially motivated by a new proposal that two 5f valence electrons per formula unit in UPt3 are localized by correlation effects -- agreement with previous dHvA measurements of the Fermi surface was invoked in its support. Comprehensive comparison with our new observations shows that this 'partially localized' model fails to predict the existence of a major sheet of the Fermi surface, and is therefore less compa…
We report magneto-acoustic quantum oscillations (MAQO) in the heavy fermion system UPt$_3$ in magnetic fields B, upto 33 T. For B in the ab-plane of the hexagonal crystal MAQO in the sound velocity commence at $\approx$ 12 T and grow with field. However, in contrast to typical Lifshitz-Kosevich behaviour the frequency corresponding to the dominant oscillation increases continuously as the metamagnetic transition (MMT) at 20 T is reached. This dominant MAQO arises from the $δ$ orbit of band 1 with a large effective mass of 33 m$_e$, for B $<$ 20 T and disappears after the MMT. Thus, the MMT inv…
It is shown by the Wilson numerical renormalization group method that a strongly correlated impurity with a crystalline-electric-field singlet ground state in the f^2-configuration exhibits an anomalous local Fermi liquid state in which the static magnetic susceptibility remains an uncorrelated value while the NMR relaxation rate is enhanced in proportion to the square of the mass enhancement factor. Namely, the Korringa-Shiba relation is apparently broken. This feature closely matches the anomalous behaviors observed in UPt_3, i.e., the coexistence of an unenhanced value of the Knight shift d…
Although the superconductivity in UPt_3 is one of the most well studied, there are still lingering questions about the nodal directions in the B and C phase in the presence of a magnetic field. Limiting ourselves to the low temperature regime (T<<Delta(0)), we study the magnetothermal conductivity with in semiclassical approximation using Volovik's approach. The angular dependence of the magnetothermal conductivity for an arbitrary field direction should clarify the nodal structure in UPt_3.
The field-orientation dependent thermal conductivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor UPt$_3$ was measured down to very low temperatures and under magnetic fields throughout three distinct superconducting phases: A, B, and C phases. In the C phase, a striking twofold oscillation of the thermal conductivity within the basal plane is resolved reflecting the superconducting gap structure with a line of node along the a axis. Moreover, we find an abrupt vanishing of the oscillation across a transition to the B phase, as a clear indication of a change of gap symmetries. We also identify extra tw…
A heavy-fermion superconductor UPt$_3$ is a unique spin-triplet superconductor with multiple superconducting phases. Here we provide the first report on the first-principles analysis of the microscopic superconducting gap structure. We find that the promising gap structure is an unprecedented $E_{2u}$ state, which is completely different from the previous phenomenological $E_{2u}$ models. Our obtained $E_{2u}$ state has in-plane twofold vertical line nodes on small Fermi surfaces and point nodes with linear dispersion on a large Fermi surface. These peculiar features cannot be explained in the…
The orbital symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in UPt_3 is identified by evaluating the directionally dependent thermalconductivity and ultrasound attenuation in the clean limit and compared with the existing data for both basal plane and the c-axis of a hexagonal crystal. The resulting two component orbital part expressed by (λ_x(k), λ_y(k)) is combined with the previously determined triplet spin part, leading to clean limit and compared with the existing data for both basal plane and the c-axis of a hexagonal crystal. The resulting two component orbital part expressed by (λ_x(k)…
We theoretically investigate the interlayer magnetoresistance in quasi-two-dimensional Dirac fermion systems, where the Fermi energy is at the Dirac point. If there is an intermediate insulating layer that has an overlap with the wave functions in the Dirac fermion layers, there appears a positive magnetoresistance regime due to the intervalley tunneling. We show that the interlayer magnetoresistance can be used to find whether Dirac fermions are massive or not from the minimum in the interlayer magnetoresistance. As a specific system, we consider \alphaI under high pressure. We also discuss t…
The aspect of the quasiparticle interaction of a local Fermi liquid, the impurity version of f$^2$-based heavy fermions, is studied by the Wilson numerical renormalization group method. In particular, the case of the f$^2$-singlet crystalline-electric-field ground state is investigated assuming the case of UPt$_3$ with the hexagonal symmetry. It is found that the interorbital interaction becomes larger than the intraorbital one in contrast to the case of the bare Coulomb interaction for the parameters relevant to UPt$_3$. This result offers us a basis to construct a microscopic theory of the s…
Materials that exhibit colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) are currently the focus of an intense research effort, driven by the technological applications that their sensitivity lends them to. Using the angular correlation of photons from electron-positron annihilation, we present a first glimpse of the Fermi surface of a material that exhibits CMR, supported by ``virtual crystal'' electronic structure calculations. The Fermi surface is shown to be sufficiently cubic in nature that it is likely to support nesting.
We identify an intrinsic mechanism of the anomalous Hall effect for non-symmorphic chiral superconductors. This mechanism relies on both a nontrivial multi-band chiral superconducting order parameter, which is a mixture of pairings of even and odd angular momentum channels, and a complex normal state inter-sublattice hopping, both of which are consequences of the nonsymmorphic group symmetry of the underlying lattice. We apply this mechanism to the putative chiral superconducting phase of the heavy-fermion superconductor $\mathrm{UPt_3}$ and calculate the anomalous ac Hall conductivity in a si…
We report extensive resistivity, Hall, and magnetoresistance measurements on thin films of the electron-doped cuprate \PCCO~(PCCO), as a function of doping, temperature and magnetic field. The doping dependence of the resistivity and Hall number at low temperatures are characteristic of a system near a quantum phase transition or a Fermi Surface Reconstruction (FSR) point. The spin magnetoresistance drops to zero near the critical point. The data presented in this paper were compiled during the 2004-2007 period but were never published in this comprehensive form. Because of the recent interest…
We investigate quantum dynamics and kinetics of a 2D conductor with closed Fermi surface reconstructed by a biaxial density wave, in which electrons move along a two-dimensional periodic net of semiclassical trajectories coupled by the magnetic breakdown tunnelling under a strong magnetic field. We derive a quasi-particle dispersion law and magnetoconductivity tensor. The quasi-particle spectrum is found to be the alternating series of two-dimensional magnetic energy bands with gaps between them. The longitudinal magnetoconductivity shows giant oscillations with change of magnetic field, while…
Intensive studies for more than three decades have elucidated multiple superconducting phases and odd-parity Cooper pairs in a heavy fermion superconductor UPt$_3$. We identify a time-reversal invariant superconducting phase of UPt$_3$ as a recently proposed topological nonsymmorphic superconductivity. Combining the band structure of UPt$_3$, order parameter of $E_{\rm 2u}$ representation allowed by $P6_3/mmc$ space group symmetry, and topological classification by $K$-theory, we demonstrate the nontrivial $Z_2$-invariant of three-dimensional DIII class enriched by glide symmetry. Correspondin…
We used high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to reveal the Fermi surface and key transport parameters of the metallic state of the layered Colossal Magnetoresistive (CMR) oxide La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7. With these parameters the calculated in-plane conductivity is nearly one order of magnitude larger than the measured DC conductivity. This discrepancy can be accounted for by including the pseudogap which removes at least 90% of the spectral weight at the Fermi energy. Key to the pseudogap and many other properties are the parallel straight Fermi surface sections which are highly su…
A very strong magnetoelastic effect in the CeCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Si alloys is reported. The strength of the magnetostrictive effect can be tuned upon changing $x$. The moderate low-temperature linear magnetostriction observed at low Fe concentrations becomes very large ($\frac {ΔL}{L} \left(16 T,2 K\right) =$ 3$\times$10$^{-3}$) around the critical concentration ($x_c \approx$ 0.23) at which the long-range antiferromagnetic order vanishes. Upon increasing doping through the non-magnetic region ($x > x_c$), the magnetostriction strength gradually weakens again. Remarkably the low-temperature magn…
The behavior of the so-called weak moment antiferromagnetic states, observed in the heavy-fermion superconductors UPt$_3$ and URu$_2$Si$_2$, is discussed in view of recent $μ$SR results obtained as function of control parameters like chemical substitution and external pressure. In UPt$_3$, the Pd substitution for Pt reveals the dynamical character of the weak moment order. On the other hand, $μ$SR measurements performed on samples in which Th substitutes U suggest that crystallographic disorder on the magnetic sites deeply affects the fluctuation timescale. In URu$_2$Si$_2$, a phase separation…
Topological semimetals are predicted to exhibit unconventional electrodynamics, but a central experimental challenge is singling out the contributions from the topological bands. TaAs is the prototypical example, where 24 Weyl points and 8 trivial Fermi surfaces make the interpretation of any experiment in terms of band topology ambiguous. We report magneto-infrared reflection spectroscopy measurements on TaAs. We observed sharp inter-Landau level transitions from a single pocket of Weyl Fermions in magnetic fields as low as 0.4 tesla. We determine the W2 Weyl point to be 8.3 meV below the Fer…
In a number of quasi-one-dimensional organic metals the dependence of the magnetoresistance on the direction of the magnetic field is quite different from the predictions of Boltzmann transport theory for a Fermi liquid with a scattering rate that is independent of momentum. We consider a model in which there are large variations in the scattering rate over the Fermi surface. The model is the quasi-one-dimensional version of the ``cold spots'' model introduced by Ioffe and Millis to explain anomalous transport properties of the metallic phase of the cuprate superconductors. The dependence of t…
Magnetooptical measurements of several quasi-two-dimensional (q2D) organic conductors, which have simple Fermi surface structure, have been performed by using a cavity perturbation technique. Despite of the simple Fermi surface structure, magnetooptical resonance results show a dramatic difference for each sample. Cyclotron resonances (CR) were observed for q-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 and (BEDT-TTF)3Br(pBIB), while periodic orbit resonances (POR) were observed for (BEDT-TTF)2Br(DIA) and (BEDT-TTF)3Cl(DFBIB). The selection of the resonance seems to correspond with the skin depth for each sample. The effect…
The recent phase sensitive measurements in the superconducting $B$-phase of UPt$_3$ provide strong evidence for the triplet, chiral $k_z(k_x \pm ik_y)^2$ pairing symmetries, which endow the Cooper pairs with orbital angular momentum projections $L _z= \pm 2$ along the $c$-axis. In the absence of disorder such pairing can support both line and point nodes, and both types of nodal quasiparticles exhibit nontrivial topology in the momentum space. The point nodes, located at the intersections of the closed Fermi surfaces with the $c$-axis, act as the double monopoles and the antimonopoles of the B…
Quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging of Bogoliubov excitations in quasi-two dimensional unconventional superconductors has become a powerful technique for measuring the superconducting gap and its symmetry. Here, we present the extension of this method to three-dimensional superconductors and analyze the expected QPI spectrum for the two-component heavy fermion superconductor UPt$_3$ whose gap structure is still controversial. Starting from a 3D electronic structure and the three proposed chiral gap models $E_{1g,u}$ or $E_{2u}$, we perform a slab calculation that determines the 2D continu…
We have used small-angle neutron scattering to determine the vortex lattice phase diagram in the topological superconductor UPt3 for the applied magnetic field along the crystalline c-axis. A triangular vortex lattice is observed throughout the superconducting state, but with an orientation relative to the hexagonal basal place that changes with field and temperature. At low temperature, in the chiral B phase, the vortex lattice undergoes a non-monotonic rotation with increasing magnetic field. The rotation amplitude decreases with increasing temperature and vanishes before reaching the A phas…
We report magnetotransport measurements of PrSb in high magnetic fields. Our results show that PrSb exhibits extremely large magnetoresistance(XMR) at low temperatures. Meanwhile angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements were used to probe the Fermi surface via Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations. The angular dependence of the frequencies of the $α$-branch indicate a two-dimensional character for this Fermi surface sheet, while the effective mass of this branch as a function of angle shows a four-fold signature. The evolution of the Fermi surface with field was also studied up to 32~T. A…
TaTe2 is a quasi-2D charge density wave (CDW) compound with distorted-1T type structure exhibiting double-zigzag chains. Here we report the Fermi surface topology of low temperature phase of TaTe2 (LT-TaTe2) by anisotropic magneto-transport and magnetic measurements on high-quality single crystals. An anomalous large linear magnetoresistance up to 140% at 3 K in 9 T was observed, suggesting the existence of a small Fermi pocket in Dirac cone state in quantum transport models. Meanwhile, strong magnetic anisotropy was observed for B (001) and B//(001). Angle-dependent magnetoresistance and de H…
We investigate dissipationless magneto-Seebeck effect in three-dimensional Dirac/Weyl semimetal. The Hall resistivity $ρ_{yx}$ and thermoelectric Hall coefficient $α_{xy}$ exhibit plateaus at the quantum limit, where electrons occupy only the zeroth Landau level. In this condition, quantum oscillation in the Seebeck coefficient $S_{xx}\approx ρ_{yx}α_{xy} $ is suppressed, and the massless fermions are transformed into a Fermi liquid system. We show that the Seebeck coefficient at the quantum limit is expressed by the harmonic sum of Fermi wavelength and thermal de Broglie wavelength scaled by …
Quantum magneto-oscillations provide a powerfull tool for quantifying Fermi-liquid parameters of metals. In particular, the quasiparticle effective mass and spin susceptibility are extracted from the experiment using the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula, derived under the assumption that the properties of the system in a non-zero magnetic field are determined uniquely by the zero-field Fermi-liquid state. This assumption is valid in 3D but, generally speaking, erroneous in 2D where the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula may be applied only if the oscillations are strongly damped by thermal smearing and disord…
We report on temperature-dependent size and anisotropy of the Fermi pockets in graphite revealed by magnetotransport measurements. The magnetoresistances obtained in fields along the c-axis obey an extended Kohler's rule, with the carrier density following prediction of a temperature-dependent Fermi energy, indicating a change in the Fermi pocket size with temperature. The angle-dependent magnetoresistivities at a given temperature exhibit a scaling behavior. The scaling factor that reflects the anisotropy of the Fermi surface is also found to vary with temperature. Our results demonstrate tha…
