We justify supercritical geometric optics in small time for the defocusing semiclassical Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation for a large class of non-necessarily homogeneous nonlinearities. The case of a half-space with Neumann boundary condition is also studied.
In this paper we are interested in constructing WKB approximations for the non linear cubic Schrödinger equation on a Riemannian surface which has a stable geodesic. These approximate solutions will lead to some instability properties of the equation.
We provide necessary and sufficient geometric conditions for the exact controllability of the one-dimensional fractional free and fractional harmonic Schrödinger equations. The necessary and sufficient condition for the exact controllability of fractional free Schrödinger equations is derived from the Logvinenko-Sereda theorem and its quantitative version established by Kovrijkine, whereas the one for the exact controllability of fractional harmonic Schrödinger equations is deduced from an infinite dimensional version of the Hautus test for Hermite functions and the Plancherel-Rotach formula.
We prove the existence of travelling-wave solutions for a system of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations arising in nonlinear optics. Such a system describes second-harmonic generation in optical materials with $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity. To prove the existence of travelling waves, we employ the method of concentration compactness to prove the relative compactness of minimizing sequences of the associated variational problem.
We define a class of geometric flows on a complete Kähler manifold to unify some physical and mechanical models such as the motion equations of vortex filament, complex-valued mKdV equations, derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equations etc. Furthermore, we consider the existence for these flows from $S^1$ into a complete Kähler manifold and prove some local and global existence results.
We prove that the geometric control condition is not necessary to obtain the smoothing effect and the uniform stabilization for the strongly dissipative Schrödinger equation.
We prove, under the exterior geometric control condition, the Kato smoothing effect for solutions of an inhomogenous and damped Schrödinger equation on exterior domains.
In this note we consider the 1-D cubic Schrödinger equation with data given as small perturbations of a Dirac-$δ$ function and some other related equations. We first recall that although the problem for this type of data is ill-posed one can use the geometric framework of the Schrödinger map to define the solution beyond the singularity time. Then, we find some natural and well defined geometric quantities that are not regular at time zero. Finally, we make a link between these results and some known phenomena in fluid mechanics that inspired this note.
We study the nonlinear Schrödinger system \[ \begin{cases} \displaystyle iu_t+Δu-u+(\frac{1}{9}|u|^2+2|w|^2)u+\frac{1}{3}\overline{u}^2w=0,\\ i\displaystyle σw_t+Δw-μw+(9|w|^2+2|u|^2)w+\frac{1}{9}u^3=0, \end{cases} \] for $(x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^n\times\mathbb{R}$, $1\leq n\leq 3$ and $σ,μ>0$. This system models the interaction between an optical beam and its third harmonic in a material with Kerr-type nonlinear response. We prove the existence of ground state solutions, analyse its stability, and establish local and global well-posedness results as well as several criteria for blow-up.
In this paper, we study the long time dynamics of small solutions to Schrödinger map flows from $\Bbb R$ to Riemannian surfaces. The results are threefold. (i) We prove that for general Riemannian surface targets the points with some geometric condition can be completely divided into two categories according to the sectional curvature so that the long time dynamics of small solutions of 1D Schrödinger map flow near them are described by modified scattering and scattering respectively for the two categories. (ii) If the geometric condition fails, we prove that solutions with slow time growth in…
We study a class of logarithmic Schrodinger equations with periodic potential which come from physically relevant situations and obtain the existence of infinitely many geometrically distinct solutions.
In this paper, we study the existence of vortices for two kinds of nonlinear Schrödinger equations arising from the Bose-Einstein condensates and geometric optics arguments, respectively. For the Gross-Pitaevskii equation from Bose-Einstein condensates arguments, we introduce the weighted Sobolev space on which the corresponding functional is coercive. By using the variational methods, we prove the existence of positive and radially symmetric solutions under different types of boundary condition. And we study another equation arising from geometric optics arguments by constrained minimization …
We present new solutions in terms of elementary functions of the multi-component nonlinear Schrödinger equations and known solutions of the Davey-Stewartson equations such as multi-soliton, breather, dromion and lump solutions. These solutions are given in a simple determinantal form and are obtained as limiting cases in suitable degenerations of previously derived algebro-geometric solutions. In particular we present for the first time breather and rational breather solutions of the multi-component nonlinear Schrödinger equations.
We prove controllability of the Schrödinger equation in $\mathbb{R}^d$ in any time $T > 0$ with internal control supported on nonempty, periodic, open sets. This demonstrates in particular that controllability of the Schrödinger equation in full space holds for a strictly larger class of control supports than for the wave equation and suggests that the control theory of Schrödinger equation in full space might be closer to the diffusive nature of the heat equation than to the ballistic nature of the wave equation. Our results are based on a combination of Floquet-Bloch theory with Ingham-type …
We consider the relativistic Schrödinger equation with a time dependent vector and scalar potential on a bounded cylindrical domain. Using a Geometric Optics Ansatz we establish a logarithmic stability estimate for the recovery of the vector and scalar potentials.
A variant of Li-Tam theory, which associates to each end of a complete Riemannian manifold a positive solution of a given Schrödinger equation on the manifold, is developed. It is demonstrated that such positive solutions must be of polynomial growth of fixed order under a suitable scaling invariant Sobolev inequality. Consequently, a finiteness result for the number of ends follows. In the case when the Sobolev inequality is of particular type, the finiteness result is proven directly. As an application, an estimate on the number of ends for shrinking gradient Ricci solitons and submanifolds …
We prove some instability phenomena for semi-classical (linear or) nonlinear Schrodinger equations. For some perturbations of the data, we show that for very small times, we can neglect the Laplacian, and the mechanism is the same as for the corresponding ordinary differential equation. Our approach allows smaller perturbations of the data, where the instability occurs for times such that the problem cannot be reduced to the study of an o.d.e.
We show that for a Schrödinger operator with bounded potential on a manifold with cylindrical ends the space of solutions which grows at most exponentially at infinity is finite dimensional and, for a dense set of potentials (or, equivalently for a surface, for a fixed potential and a dense set of metrics), the constant function zero is the only solution that vanishes at infinity. Clearly, for general potentials there can be many solutions that vanish at infinity. These results follow from a three circles inequality (or log convexity inequality) for the Sobolev norm of a solution $u$ to a Schr…
We describe and rigorously justify the nonlinear interaction of highly oscillatory waves in nonlinear Schrodinger equations, posed on Euclidean space or on the torus. Our scaling corresponds to a weakly nonlinear regime where the nonlinearity affects the leading order amplitude of the solution, but does not alter the rapid oscillations. We consider initial states which are superpositions of slowly modulated plane waves, and use the framework of Wiener algebras. A detailed analysis of the corresponding nonlinear wave mixing phenomena is given, including a geometric interpretation on the resonan…
We consider the problem of recovering a nonlinear potential function in a nonlinear Schrödinger equation on transversally anisotropic manifolds from the linearized Dirichlet-to-Neumann map at a large wavenumber. By calibrating the complex geometric optics (CGO) solutions according to the wavenumber, we prove the increasing stability of recovering the coefficient of a cubic term as the wavenumber becomes large.
We consider the small time semi-classical limit for nonlinear Schrodinger equations with defocusing, smooth, nonlinearity. For a super-cubic nonlinearity, the limiting system is not directly hyperbolic, due to the presence of vacuum. To overcome this issue, we introduce new unknown functions, which are defined nonlinearly in terms of the wave function itself. This approach provides a local version of the modulated energy functional introduced by Y.Brenier. The system we obtain is hyperbolic symmetric, and the justification of WKB analysis follows.
In this work we study the phenomenon of increasing stability in the inverse boundary value problem for the Schrödinger equation. This problem was previously considered by Isakov in which he discussed the phenomenon in different ranges of the wave number (or energy). The main contribution of this work is to provide a unified and easier approach to the same problem based on the complex geometrical optics solutions.
We study local and global existence and smoothing properties for the initial value problem associated to a higher order nonlinear Schrödinger equation with constant coefficients which appears as a model for propagation of pulse in optical fiber.
We study the long-time behavior of solutions to the nonlinear Schrödinger / Gross-Pitaevskii equation (NLS/GP) with a symmetric double-well potential, continuing work of the 2nd and 3rd authors. NLS/GP governs nearly-monochromatic guided optical beams in weakly coupled waveguides with both linear and nonlinear (Kerr) refractive indices and zero absorption. The optical power ($L^2$ norm) is conserved with propagation distance. At low optical power, the beam energy executes beating oscillations between the two waveguides. There is an optical power threshold above which the set of guided mode sol…
We determine the Lie point symmetries of the Schrödinger and the Klein Gordon equations in a general Riemannian space. It is shown that these symmetries are related with the homothetic and the conformal algebra of the metric of the space respectively. We consider the kinematic metric defined by the classical Lagrangian and show how the Lie point symmetries of the Schrödinger equation and the Klein Gordon equation are related with the Noether point symmetries of this Lagrangian. The general results are applied to two practical problems a. The classification of all two and three dimensional pote…
In this paper, we intend to present some already known results about the internal controllability of the linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equation. After presenting the basic properties of the equation, we give a self contained proof of the controllability in dimension 1 using some propagation results. We then discuss how to obtain some similar results on a compact manifold where the zone of control satisfies the Geometric Control Condition. We also discuss some known results and open questions when this condition is not satisfied. Then, we present the links between the controllability and som…
We study the flow map associated to the cubic Schrodinger equation in space dimension at least three. We consider initial data of arbitrary size in $H^s$, where $0<s<s_c$, $s_c$ the critical index, and perturbations in $H^\si$, where $\si<s_c$ is independent of $s$. We show an instability mechanism in some Sobolev spaces of order smaller than $s$. The analysis relies on two features of super-critical geometric optics: creation of oscillation, and ghost effect.
The advent of transformation optics and metamaterials has made possible devices producing extreme effects on wave propagation. Here we give theoretical designs for devices, Schrödinger hats, acting as invisible concentrators of waves. These exist for any wave phenomenon modeled by either the Helmholtz or Schrödinger equations, e.g., polarized waves in EM, pressure waves in acoustics and matter waves in QM, and occupy one part of a parameter space continuum of wave-manipulating structures which also contains standard transformation optics based cloaks, resonant cloaks and cloaked sensors. For E…
In this paper, we utilize Fokas method to investigate the initial-boundary value problems (IBVPs) of the fourth-order dispersive nonlinear Schrödinger (FODNLS) equation on the half-line, which can simulate the nonlinear transmission and interaction of ultrashort pulses in the high-speed optical fiber transmission system, and describe the nonlinear spin excitation phenomenon of one-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnetic chain with eight poles and dipole interaction. By discussing the eigenfunctions of Lax pair of FODNLS equation and the analysis and symmetry of the scattering matrix, the IBVPs of…
Coupled nonlinear Schrodinger systems describe some physical phenomena such as the propagation in birefringent optical fibers, Kerr-like photorefractive media in optics and Bose-Einstein condensates. In this paper, we study the existence of concentrating solutions of a singularly perturbed coupled nonlinear Schrodinger system, in presence of potentials. We show how the location of the concentration points depends strictly on the potentials.
This is the first of a series of papers devoted to the study of classical initial-boundary value problems of Dirichlet, Neumann and mixed type for the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the segment. Considering proper periodic discontinuous extensions of the profile, generated by suitable point-like sources, we show that the above boundary value problems can be rewritten as nonlinear dynamical systems for suitable sets of algebro-geometric spectral data, generalizing the classical Dubrovin equations. In this paper we consider, as a first illustration of the above method, the case of the Dirichl…
We prove global internal controllability in large time for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on some compact manifolds of dimension 3. The result is proved under some geometrical assumptions : geometric control and unique continuation. We give some examples where they are fulfilled on $\Tot$, $S^3$ and $S^2\times S^1$. We prove this by two different methods both inherently interesting. The first one combines stabilization and local controllability near 0. The second one uses successive controls near some trajectories. We also get a regularity result about the control if the data are assumed s…
We study the orbital stability and instability of single-spike bound states of semiclassical nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations with critical exponent, linear and nonlinear optical lattices (OLs). These equations may model two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in linear and nonlinear OLs. When linear OLs are switched off, we derive the asymptotic expansion formulas and obtain necessary conditions for the orbital stability and instability of single-spike bound states, respectively. When linear OLs are turned on, we consider three different conditions of linear and nonlinear OLs to develo…

We present basic results, known and new, on nontrivial solutions of periodic stationary nonlinear Schrödinger equations. We also sketch an application to nonlinear optics and discuss some open problems.
The virial theorem is a nice property for the linear Schrodinger equation in atomic and molecular physics as it gives an elegant ratio between the kinetic and potential energies and is useful in assessing the quality of numerically computed eigenvalues. If the governing equation is a nonlinear Schrodinger equation with power-law nonlinearity, then a similar ratio can be obtained but there seems no way of getting any eigenvalue estimate. It is surprising as far as we are concerned that when the nonlinearity is either square-root or saturable nonlinearity (not a power-law), one can develop a vir…
In this paper a global smoothing property of Schrodinger equations is established in the critical case in dimensions two and higher. It is shown that the critical smoothing estimate is attained if the smoothing operator has some structure. This structure is related to the geometric properties of the equations. Results for critical cases for operators of higher orders as well as for hyperbolic equations are also given.
