We describe a model for the thermal and dynamical equilibrium of starless cores that includes the radiative transfer of the gas and dust and simple CO chemistry. The model shows that the structure and behavior of the cores is significantly different depending on whether the central density is either above or below about 10^5 cm-3. This density is significant as the critical density for gas cooling by gas-dust collisions and also as the critical density for dynamical stability, given the typical properties of the starless cores. The starless cores thus divide into two classes that we refer to as thermally super-critical and thermally sub-critical.This two-class distinction allows an improved interpretation of the different observational data of starless cores within a single model.
In this paper, we present the first results of a survey of 220 starless cores selected primarily by their optical obscuration (Lee & Myers 1999) and observed in CS (2-1), N$_2$H$^+$ (1-0), and C$^{18}$O (1-0) using the NEROC Haystack 37-m telescope, to quantify the incidence of infall motions toward starless cores and find infall candidates for further study in the future.
We present Spitzer infrared observations of the starless core L429. The IR images of this core show an absorption feature, caused by the dense core material, at wavelengths <= 70 micron. The core has a steep density profile, and reaches A_V > 35 mag near the center. We show that L429 is either collapsing or in a near-collapse state.
If the split, asymmetric molecular spectral line profiles that are seen in many starless cores are interpreted as indicative of global collapse or expansion of the core then one possible implication is that most starless cores have short lifetimes on the order of the collapse or sound crossing time scale. An alternative interpretation of the line profiles as indicative of perturbations on an underlying equilibrium structure leads to the opposite implication, that many cores have long lifetimes. While evidence suggests that some cores are collapsing on a free-fall time scale, we show that obser…
We evaluate the intrinsic three dimensional shapes of molecular cores, by analysing their projected shapes. We use the recent catalogue of molecular line observations of Jijina et al. and model the data by the method originally devised for elliptical galaxies. Our analysis broadly supports the conclusion of Jones et al. that molecular cores are better represented by triaxial intrinsic shapes (ellipsoids) than biaxial intrinsic shapes (spheroids). However, we find that the best fit to all of the data is obtained with more extreme axial ratios ($1:0.8:0.4$) than those derived by Jones et al. Mor…
We present interferometric observations of N2H+(1-0) in the starless, dense core L694-2 and compare them to previously published maps of L1544. Both cores are starless, centrally condensed, and show spectral signatures of rotation and collapse. We fit radially averaged spectra using a two-layer infall model and measure the variation of opacity and infall speed in each core. Both functions increase toward the center of each core but the radial gradients are shallower, and the central values lower, in L694-2. This general behavior is predicted in models of gravitational collapse with thermal plu…
We present observations of 13CO, C18O, HCO+, H13CO+, DCO+ and N2H+ line emission towards the Barnard 68 starless core. The line profiles are interpreted using a chemical network coupled with a radiative transfer code in order to reconstruct the radial velocity profile of the core. Our observations and modeling indicate the presence of complex radial motions, with the inward motions in the outer layers of the core but outward motions in the inner part, suggesting radial oscillations. The presence of such oscillation would imply that B68 is relatively old, typically one order of magnitude older …
In this paper we study the determinants of starless core temperatures in the Perseus molecular cloud. We use NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) observations to derive core temperatures (T_kin) and data from the COMPLETE Survey of Star Forming Regions and the c2d Spitzer Legacy Survey for observations of the other core and molecular cloud properties. The kinetic temperature distribution probed by NH3 is in the fairly narrow range of 9 - 15 K. We find that cores within the clusters IC348 and NGC1333 are significantly warmer than "field" starless cores, and T_kin is higher within regions of larger extinction-de…
I review the basic processes that may be used to develop a chemical evolutionary sequence for low-mass starless cores. I highlight observational results from the Arizona Radio Observatory-Green Bank Survey. Observations were performed with the SMT 10-m, ARO 12-m, and GBT 100-m toward a sample of 25 nearby (D < 400 pc) low-mass starless cores which have radiative transfer models of the 850 $μ$m emission and observed SED (160 - 1300 um). The cores were observed in the lines of NH3 (1,1) and (2,2), o-NH2D 1_{11} - 1_{01}, C2S 1_2 - 2_1, C3S 4 - 3, HCN 1 - 0, HC5N 9 - 8, HC7N 21 - 20, C18O and C17…
We present combined single-dish and interferometric CS(2--1) and N2H+(1--0) observations of a compact core in the NW region of the Serpens molecular cloud. The core is starless according to observations from optical to millimeter wavelengths and its lines have turbulent widths and ``infall asymmetry''. Line profile modeling indicates supersonic inward motions v_in>0.34 km/s over an extended region L>12000AU. The high infall speed and large extent exceeds the predictions of most thermal ambipolar diffusion models and points to a more dynamical process for core formation. A short (dynamic) times…
We present observations of L1014, a dense core in the Cygnus region previously thought to be starless, but data from the Spitzer Space Telescope shows the presence of an embedded source. We propose a model for this source that includes a cold core, heated by the interstellar radiation field, and a low-luminosity internal source. The low luminosity of the internal source suggests a substellar object. If L1014 is representative, other "starless" cores may turn out to harbor central sources.
We present interferometric observations of N2H+(1--0) in the starless, dense core L1544 in Taurus. Red-shifted self-absorption, indicative of inward motions, is found toward the center of an elongated core. The data are fit by a non-spherical model consisting of two isothermal, rotating, centrally condensed layers. Through a hybrid global-individual fit to the spectra, we map the variation of infall speed at scales ~1400AU and find values ~0.08 km/s around the core center. The inward motions are small in comparison to thermal, rotational, and gravitational speeds but are large enough to sugges…
L1521E seems unique among starless cores. It stands out in a distribution of a ratio (R) that we define to asses core evolution, and which compares the emission of the easily-depleted C18O molecule with that of the hard to deplete, late-time species N2H+. While all cores we have studied so far have R ratio lower than 1, L1521E has an R value of 3.4, which is 8 times the mean of the other cores. To understand this difference, we have modeled the C18O and N2H+ abundance profiles in L1521E using a density distribution derived from 1.2mm continuum data. Our model shows that the C18O emission in th…
In the standard picture of isolated star formation, dense ``starless'' cores are formed out of magnetic molecular clouds due to ambipolar diffusion. Under the simplest spherical geometry, I demonstrate that ``starless'' cores formed this way naturally exhibit a large scale inward motion, whose size and speed are comparable to those detected recently by Taffala et al. and Williams et al. in ``starless'' core L1544. My model clouds have a relatively low mass (of order 10 $M_\odot$) and low field strength (of order 10 $μ$G) to begin with. They evolve into a density profile with a central plateau …
We present Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the "evolved starless core" L1521F which reveal the presence of a very low luminosity object (L < 0.07 Lsun). The object, L1521F-IRS, is directly detected at mid-infrared wavelengths (>5 micron) but only in scattered light at shorter infrared wavelengths, showing a bipolar nebula oriented east-west which is probably tracing an outflow cavity. The nebula strongly suggests that L1521F-IRS is embedded in the L1521F core. Thus L1521F-IRS is similar to the recently discovered L1014-IRS and the previously known IRAM 04191 in its substellar luminosit…
Dense low mass cores in nearby clouds like Taurus and Auriga are some of the simplest sites currently forming stars like our Sun. Because of their simplicity and proximity, dense cores offer the clearest view of the different phases of star formation, in particular the conditions prior to the onset of gravitational collapse. Thanks to the combined analysis of the emission from molecular lines and the emission/absorption from dust grains, the last several years have seen a very rapid progress in our understanding of the structure and chemical composition of starless cores. Previous contradictio…
We have studied the physical and chemical properties of a quiescent starless core L1521E with various molecular lines. It is found that there exists a compact dense core traced by the H^13CO^+, HN^13C, CCS, and HC_3N lines; their distributions have a single peak at the same position. The core radius is as small as 0.031 pc, whereas the H_2 density at the peak position is as high as (1.3-5.6)times10^5 cm^-3. Although the density is high enough to excite the inversion transitions of NH_3, these lines are found to be very faint in L1521E. The distributions of NH_3 and CCS seem to be different fro…
We test the hypothesis that the starless cores may be gravitationally bound clouds supported largely by thermal pressure by comparing observed molecular line spectra to theoretical spectra produced by a simulation that includes hydrodynamics, radiative cooling, variable molecular abundance, and radiative transfer in a simple one-dimensional model. The results suggest that the starless cores can be divided into two categories: stable starless cores that are in approximate equilibrium and will not evolve to form protostars, and unstable pre-stellar cores that are proceeding toward gravitational …
New molecular line observations of the Bok globule Barnard 68 in HCO+ irrefutably confirm the complex pattern of red and blue asymmetric line profiles seen across the face of the cloud in previous observations of CS. The new observations thus strengthen the previous interpretation that Barnard 68 is undergoing peculiar oscillations. Furthermore, the physical chemistry of B68 indicates that the object is much older than the sound crossing time and is therefore long-lived. A model is presented for the globule in which a modest external pressure perturbation is shown to lead to oscillations about…
We have carried out observations of the starless core L1544 in the CCS (J_N=3_2-2_1) line at 9 millimeters wavelength using the BIMA array. The maps show an elongated condensation, 0.15 x 0.045 pc in size, with stronger emission at the edges. The appearance is consistent with a flattened, ringlike structure viewed at high inclination to the line of sight. The CCS molecule is likely heavily depleted in the inner part of the core. The position velocity diagram along the major axis shows a remarkable pattern, a "tilted ellipse", that can be reproduced by a simple model ring with motions of both i…
In a previous paper, we modeled the oscillations of a thermally-supported (Bonnor-Ebert) sphere as non-radial, linear perturbations following a standard analysis developed for stellar pulsations. The predicted column density variations and molecular spectral line profiles are similar to those observed in the Bok globule B68 suggesting that the motions in some starless cores may be oscillating perturbations on a thermally supported equilibrium structure. However, the linear analysis is unable to address several questions, among them the stability, and lifetime of the perturbations. In this pape…
We have undertaken a survey of N2H+ and N2D+ towards 31 low-mass starless cores using the IRAM 30m telescope. Our main objective has been to determine the abundance ratio of N2D+ and N2H+ towards the nuclei of these cores and thus to obtain estimates of the degree of deuterium enrichment, a symptom of advanced chemical evolution according to current models. We find that the N(N2D+)/N(N2H+) ratio is larger in more "centrally concentrated cores" with larger peak H2 and N2H+ column density than the sample mean. The deuterium enrichment in starless cores is presently ascribed to depletion of CO in…
Models of self-gravitating gas in the early stages of pressure-free collapse are compared for initial states which are equilibrium layers, cylinders, and Bonnor-Ebert spheres. For each geometrical case the density profile has an inner region of shallow slope surrounded by an outer region of steep slope, and the profile shape during early collapse remains similar to the profile shape of the initial equilibrium. The two-slope density structure divides the spherical collapse history into a starless infall phase and a protostellar accretion phase. The similarity of density profiles implies that Bo…
We develop a method of analyzing radio frequency spectral line observations to derive data on the temperature, density, velocity, and molecular abundance of the emitting gas. The method incorporates a radiative transfer code with a new technique for handling overlapping hyperfine emission lines within the accelerated lambda iteration algorithm and a heuristic search algorithm based on simulated annnealing. We apply this method to new observations of N_2H^+ in three Lynds clouds thought to be starless cores in the first stages of star formation and determine their density structure. A compariso…
We present the results of an extensive mapping survey of 53 `starless' cores in the optically thick line of CS 2-1 and the optically thin lines of N2H+ 1-0 and C18O 1-0. The purpose of this survey was to search for signatures of extended inward motions. This study finds 10 `strong' and 9 `probable' infall candidates, based on $δV_{CS}$ analysis and on the spectral shapes of CS lines. From our analysis of the blue-skewed CS spectra and the $δV_{CS}$ parameter, we find typical infall radii of 0.06-0.14 pc. Also, using a simple two layer radiative transfer model to fit the profiles, we derive one…
We report the identification of a sample of potential High-Mass Starless Cores (HMSCs). The cores were discovered by comparing images of the fields containing candidate High-Mass Protostellar Objects (HMPOs) at 1.2mm and mid-infrared (8.3um; MIR) wavelengths. While the HMPOs are detected at both wavelengths, several cores emitting at 1.2mm in the same fields show absorption or no emission at the MIR wavelength. We argue that the absorption is caused by cold dust. The estimated masses of a few 10^2Msun - 10^3 Msun and the lack of IR emission suggests that they may be massive cold cores in a pre…
The presence of H2D+ in dense cloud cores underlies ion-molecule reactions that strongly enhance the deuterium fractionation of many molecular species. We determine the H2D+ abundance in one starless core, Barnard 68, that has a particularly well established physical, chemical, and dynamical structure. We observed the ortho-H2D+ ground-state line 1_10-1_11, the N2H+ J=4-3 line, and the H13CO+ 4-3 line with the APEX telescope. We report the probable detection of the o-H2D+ line at an intensity Tmb=0.22 +- 0.08 K and exclusively thermal line width, and find only upper limits to the N2H+ 4-3 and …
We present CS(3-2) and DCO+(2-1) observations of 94 starless cores and compare the results with previous CS(2-1) and N2H+(1-0) observations to study inward motions in starless cores. The velocity shifts of the CS(3-2) and (2-1) lines with respect to N2H+ correlate well with each other and have similar distributions. This implies that, in many cores, systematic inward motions of gaseous material may occur over a range of density of at least a factor 4. We identify 18 infall candidates based on observations of CS(3-2), CS(2-1), DCO+(2-1) and N2H+(1-0). The eight best candidates, L1355, L1498, L1…
We used the NRAO Very Large Array to search for 3.6 cm continuum emission from embedded protostars in a sample of 8 nearby ``starless'' cores that show spectroscopic evidence for infalling motions in molecular emission lines. We detect a total of 13 compact sources in the eight observed fields to 5 sigma limiting flux levels of typically 0.09 mJy. None of these sources lie within 1' of the central positions of the cores, and they are all likely background objects. Based on an extrapolation of the empirical correlation between the bolometric luminosity and 3.6 cm luminosity for the youngest pro…
In a previous paper we demonstrated that non-radial hydrodynamic oscillations of a thermally-supported (Bonnor-Ebert) sphere embedded in a low-density, high-temperature medium persist for many periods. The predicted column density variations and molecular spectral line profiles are similar to those observed in the Bok globule B68 suggesting that the motions in some starless cores may be oscillating perturbations on a thermally supported equilibrium structure. Such oscillations can produce molecular line maps which mimic rotation, collapse or expansion, and thus could make determining the dynam…
We present an unbiased census of starless cores in Perseus, Serpens, and Ophiuchus, assembled by comparing large-scale Bolocam 1.1 mm continuum emission maps with Spitzer c2d surveys. We use the c2d catalogs to separate 108 starless from 92 protostellar cores in the 1.1 mm core samples from Enoch et al. (2006), Young et al. (2006), and Enoch et al. (2007). A comparison of these populations reveals the initial conditions of the starless cores. Starless cores in Perseus have similar masses but larger sizes and lower densities on average than protostellar cores, with sizes that suggest density pr…
In an attempt to understand the dynamics of collapsing starless cores, we have onducted a detailed investigation of the velocity fields of two collapsing cores, L694-2 and L1197, with high spatial resolution HCN J=1-0 maps and Monte Carlo radiative transfer alculation. It is found that infall motion is most active in the middle and outer layers outside the central density-flat region, while both the central and outermost parts of the cores are static or exhibit slower motion. Their peak velocities are 0.28 km s^{-1} for L694-2 and 0.20 km s^{-1$ for L1197, which could not be found in simple mo…
We observed the pre-stellar core L1521F in dust emission at 1.2mm and in two transitions each of N2H+, N2D+, C18O, and C17O in order to increase the sample of well studied centrally concentrated and chemically evolved starless cores, likely on the verge of star formation, and to determine the initial conditions for low--mass star formation in the Taurus Molecular Cloud. We derived in this object a molecular hydrogen number density n(H2) ~ 10^6 cm-3 and a CO depletion factor, integrated along the line of sight, fD ~ 15 in the central 20'', similar to the pre-stellar core L1544. However, the N(N…
We develop a detailed chemical model for the starless cores of strongly magnetized molecular clouds, with the ambipolar diffusion-driven dynamic evolution of the clouds coupled to the chemistry through ion abundances. We concentrate on two representative model clouds in this initial study, one with magnetic fields and the other without. The model predictions on the peak values and spatial distributions of the column densities of CO, CCS, N$_2$H$^+$ and HCO$^+$ are compared with those observationally inferred for the well-studied starless core L1544, which is thought to be on the verge of star …
(Abridged) We present evidence that low-mass starless cores, the simplest units of star formation, are systematically differentiated in their chemical composition. Molecules including CO and CS almost vanish near the core centers, where the abundance decreases by one or two orders of magnitude. At the same time, N2H+ has a constant abundance, and the fraction of NH3 increases toward the core center. Our conclusions are based on a study of 5 mostly-round starless cores (L1498, L1495, L1400K, L1517B, and L1544), which we have mappedin C18O(1-0), C17O(1-0), CS(2-1), C34S(2-1), N2H+(1-0), NH3(1,1)…
This paper reports the discovery of a Very Low Luminosity Object (VeLLO) in the "starless" dense core L328, using the Spitzer Space Telescope and ground based observations from near-infrared to millimeter wavelengths. The Spitzer 8 micron image indicates that L328 consists of three subcores of which the smallest one may harbor a source, L328-IRS while two other subcores remain starless. L328-IRS is a Class 0 protostar according to its bolometric temperature (44 K) and the high fraction ~72 % of its luminosity emitted at sub-millimeter wavelengths. Its inferred "internal luminosity" (0.04 - 0.0…
We have mapped the starless core TMC-1C in a variety of molecular lines with the IRAM 30m telescope. High density tracers show clear signs of self-absorption and sub-sonic infall asymmetries are present in N2H+ (1-0) and DCO+ (2-1) lines. The inward velocity profile in N2H+ (1-0) is extended over a region of about 7,000 AU in radius around the dust continuum peak, which is the most extended ``infalling'' region observed in a starless core with this tracer. The kinetic temperature (~12 K) measured from C17O and C18O suggests that their emission comes from a shell outside the colder interior tra…
[Abridged] We present a molecular survey of the starless cores L1498 and L1517B. These cores have been selected for their relative isolation and close-to-round shape, and they have been observed in a number of lines of 13 molecular species (4 already presented in the first part of this series): CO, CS, N2H+, NH3, CH3OH, SO, C3H2, HC3N, C2S, HCN, H2CO, HCO+, and DCO+. Using a physical model of core structure and a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code, we determine for each core a self-consistent set abundances that fits simultaneously the observed radial profile of integrated intensity and the e…
Dense, small molecular cloud cores have been identified as the direct progenitors of stars. One of the best studied examples is Barnard 68 which is considered a prototype stable, spherical gas core, confined by a diffuse high-pressure environment. Observations of its radial density structure however indicate that Barnard 68 should be gravitationally unstable and collapsing which appears to be inconsistent with its inferred long lifetime and stability. We argue that Barnard 68 is currently experiencing a fatal collision with another small core which will lead to gravitational collapse. Despite …
We have carried out a survey toward the central regions of 85 starless cores in HCN J = 1-0 to study inward motions in the cores. Sixty-four cores were detected with HCN lines. The infall asymmetry in the HCN spectra is found to be more prevalent, and more prominent than in any other previously used infall tracers such as CS J = 2-1, DCO+ J = 2-1, and N2H+ J = 1-0. We found close relation between the intensities of the HCN and N2H+ lines. This implies that the HCN is not much depleted in the central regions of the cores. In some cores, the HCN spectra show different sign of asymmetry from othe…
We study the density structure of candidate contracting starless core L694-2 using 1.3 mm dust continuum observations from the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer and the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Array, probing spatial scales from 10000-500 AU. The long baseline PdBI observations detect no emission, and limit the contamination from a compact component F_c < 2.7 mJy. This limit corresponds to a very small disk mass, M_disk < 5e-4 M_sun x (60 K / T_disk), and bolsters the ``starless'' interpretation of the core. The shorter baseline BIMA data are compared to density models using a physically m…
We have characterized the physical structure and chemical composition of two close-to-round starless cores in Taurus-Auriga, L1498 and L1517B. Our analysis is based on high angular resolution observations in at least two transitions of NH3, N2H+, CS, C34S, C18O, and C17O, together with maps of the 1.2 mm continuum. For both cores, we derive radial profiles of constant temperature and constant turbulence, together with density distributions close to those of non-singular isothermal spheres. Using these physical conditions and a Monte Carlo radiative transfer model, we derive abundance profiles …
Low-mass dense cores represent the state of molecular gas associated with the earliest phases of low-mass star formation. Such cores are called "protostellar" or "starless," depending on whether they do or do not contain compact sources of luminosity. In this chapter, the first half of the review of low-mass dense cores, we describe the numerous inferences made about the nature of starless cores as a result of recent observations, since these reveal the initial conditions of star formation. We focus on the identification of isolated starless cores and their internal physical and chemical prope…
Spitzer Space Telescope observations of a point-like source, L1014-IRS, close to the dust peak of the low-mass dense core L1014 have questioned its starless nature. The presence of an object with colors expected for an embedded protostar makes L1014-IRS the lowest luminosity isolated protostar known, and an ideal target with which to test star formation theories at the low mass end. In order to study its molecular content and to search for the presence of a molecular outflow, we mapped L1014 in at least one transition of 12CO, N2H+, HCO+, CS and of their isotopologues 13CO, C18O, C17O, N2D+ an…
Deep JHKs photometry was obtained towards eight dense molecular cores and J-H vs. H-Ks color-color plots are presented. Our photometry, sensitive to the detection of a 1 solar mass, 1 X 10^6 year old star through approx. 35 - 50 magnitudes of visual extinction, shows no indication of the presence of star/disk systems based on J-H vs. H-Ks colors of detected objects. The stars detected towards the cores are generally spatially anti-correlated with core centers suggesting a background origin, although we cannot preclude the possibility that some stars detected at H and Ks alone, or Ks alone, are…
High resolution molecular line observations of CS, HCO+, C18O and N2H+ were obtained toward the starless globule FeSt 1-457 in order to investigate its kinematics and chemistry. The HCO+ and CS spectra show clear self-reversed and asymmetric profiles across the face of the globule. The sense of the observed asymmetry is indicative of the global presence of expansion motions in the outer layers of the globule. These motions appear to be subsonic and significantly below the escape velocity of the globule. Comparison of our observations with near-infrared extinction data indicate that the globule…
We present a near-infrared extinction study of the dark globule L694-2, a starless core that shows strong evidence for inward motions in molecular line profiles. The J,H, and K band data were taken using the European Southern Observatory New Technology Telescope. The best fit simple spherical power law model has index p=2.6 +/- 0.2, over the 0.036--0.1 pc range in radius sampled in extinction. This power law slope is steeper than the value of p=2 for a singular isothermal sphere, the initial condition of the inside-out model for protostellar collapse. Including an additional extinction compone…

The HCO+ and CS spectra show clear self-reversed and asymmetric profiles across the face of the globule. The sense of the observed asymmetry is indicative of the global presence of expansion motions in the outer layers of the globule. We present a survey of the ortho-H2D+(1_{1,0}-1_{1,1}) line toward a sample of 10 starless cores and 6 protostellar cores, carried out at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. The high diagnostic power of this line is revealed for the study of the chemistry, and the evolutionary and dynamical status of low-mass dense cores. The line is detected in 7 starless cores and in 4 protostellar cores. N(ortho-H2D+) ranges between 2 and 40x10^{12} cm^{-2} in starless cores and between 2 and 9x10^{12} cm^{-2} in protostellar cores. The brightest lines are detected toward the densest and most centrally c…
We report radio continuum observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array of two molecular clouds. The impetus for these observations is a search for synchrotron radiation by cosmic ray secondary electrons/positrons in a region of enhanced density and possibly high magnetic field. We present modelling which shows that there should be an appreciable flux of synchrotron above the more diffuse, galactic synchrotron background. The starless core G333.125-0.562 and infrared source IRAS 15596-5301 were observed at 1384 and 2368 MHz. For G333.125-0.562, we find no significant levels of radio …
A brief summary is presented of our current knowledge of the structure of cold molecular cloud cores that do not contain protostars, sometimes known as starless cores. The most centrally condensed starless cores are known as pre-stellar cores. These cores probably represent observationally the initial conditions for protostellar collapse that must be input into all models of star formation. The current debate over the nature of core density profiles is summarised. A cautionary note is sounded over the use of such profiles to ascertain the equilibrium status of cores. The magnetic field structu…
We have carried out a survey of optically-selected dark clouds using the bolometer array SCUBA on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, at 850 microns wavelength. The survey covers a total of 0.5 square degrees and is unbiased with reference to cloud size, star formation activity, or the presence of infrared emission. Several new protostars and starless cores have been discovered; the protostars are confirmed through the detection of their accompanying outflows in CO(2-1) emission. The survey is believed to be complete for Class 0 and Class I protostars, and yields two important results regarding…
In this study, we investigate the shapes of starless and protostellar cores using hydrodynamic, self-gravitating adaptive mesh refinement simulations of turbulent molecular clouds. We simulate observations of these cores in dust emission, including realistic noise and telescope resolution, and compare to the observed core shapes measured in Orion by Nutter & Ward-Thompson (2007). The simulations and the observations have generally high statistical similarity, with particularly good agreement between simulations and Orion B. Although protostellar cores tend to have semi-major axis to semi-minor…
Molecular line observations of starless (prestellar) cores combined with a chemical evolution modeling and radiative transfer calculations are a powerful tool to study the earliest stages of star formation. However, conclusions drawn from such a modeling may noticeably depend on the assumed thermal structure of the cores. The assumption of isothermality, which may work well in chemo-dynamical studies, becomes a critical factor in molecular line formation simulations. We argue that even small temperature variations, which are likely to exist in starless cores, can have a non-negligible effect o…
We investigate the intrinsic shapes of starless cores in the Orion GMC, using the prestellar core sample of Nutter and Ward-Thompson (2007), which is based on submillimeter SCUBA data. We employ a maximum-likelihood method to reconstruct the intrinsic distribution of ellipsoid axial ratios from the axial ratios of projected plane-of-the-sky core ellipses. We find that, independently of the details of the assumed functional form of the distribution, there is a strong preference for oblate cores of finite thickness. Cores with varying finite degrees of triaxiality are a better fit than purely ax…
We present results of an extensive mapping survey of N2H+(1-0) in about 60 low mass cloud cores already mapped in the NH3(1,1) inversion transition line. The survey has been carried out at the FCRAO antenna with an angular resolution about 1.5 times finer than the previous ammonia observations. Cores with stars typically have map sizes about a factor of two smaller for N2H+ than for NH3, indicating the presence of denser and more centrally concentrated gas compared to starless cores. Significant correlations are found between NH3 and N2H+ column densities and excitation temperatures in starles…
