A density-functional formalism for superconductivity {\em and} magnetism is presented. The resulting relations unify previously derived Kohn-Sham equations for superconductors and for non-collinear magnetism. The formalism, which discriminates Cooper pair singlets from triplets, is applied to two quantum liquids coupled by tunneling through a barrier. An exact expression is derived, relating the eigenstates and eigenvalues of the Kohn-Sham equations, unperturbed by tunneling, on one side of the barrier to the proximity-induced ordering potential on the other.
Hybrid Ising superconductor-ferromagnetic insulator heterostructures provide a unique opportunity to explore the interplay between proximity-induced magnetism, spin-orbit coupling and superconductivity. Here we use a combination of first-principles calculations of NbSe$_{2}$/CrBr$_{3}$ heterostructures and an analytical theory of Ising superconductivity to analyze the existing experiments and provide a complete explanation of highly nontrivial and largely counterintuitive effects: an increase in the magnitude of the superconducting gap accompanied by the broadening of the tunneling peaks; hyst…
MgGa2O4 spinel barrier for magnetic tunnel junctions: coherent tunneling and low barrier height
Mixed-dimensional magnetic heterostructures are intriguing, newly available platforms to explore quantum physics and its applications. Using state-of-the-art many-body perturbation theory, we predict the energy level alignment for a self-assembled monolayer of cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) molecules on magnetic VSe 2 monolayers. The predicted projected density of states on CoPc agrees with experimental scanning tunneling spectra. Consistent with experiment, we predict a shoulder in the unoccupied region of the spectra that is absent from mean-field calculations. Unlike the nearly spin-degenerat…
Perpendicular magnetic tunnel junction with MgAl2O4 barrier is investigated. It is found that reactive RF sputtering with O2 is essential to obtain strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and large tunneling magnetoresistance in MgAl2O4-based junctions. An interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy energy density of 2.25 mJ/m2 is obtained for the samples annealed at 400C. An enhanced magnetoresistance of 60% has also been achieved. The Vhalf, bias voltage at which tunneling magnetoresistance drops to half of the zero-bias value, is found to be about 1V, which is substantially higher than t…
Dirac-electronic tunneling and nonlinear transport properties with both finite and zero energy bandgap are investigated for graphene with a tilted potential barrier under a bias. For validation, results from a finite-difference based numerical approach, which is developed for calculating transmission and reflection coefficients with a dynamically-tunable (time-dependent bias field) barrier-potential profile, are compared with those of both an analytical model for a static square-potential barrier and a perturbation theory using Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation. For a biased barrie…
