We investigate the rheological properties of an assembly of inelastic (but frictionless) particles close to the jamming density using numerical simulation, in which uniform steady states with a constant shear rate $\dotγ$ is realized. The system behaves as a power-law fluid and the relevant exponents are estimated; e.g., the shear stress is proportional to $\dotγ^{1/δ_S}$, where $1/δ_S=0.64(2)$. It is also found that the relaxation time $τ$ and the correlation length $ξ$ of the velocity increase obeying power laws: $τ\sim\dotγ^{-β}$ and $ξ\sim\dotγ^{-α}$, where $β=0.27(3)$ and $α=0.23(3)$.
We use numerical simulations to investigate the effect of different dissipative models on the shearing rheology of massive soft-core frictionless disks in two dimensions. We show that the presence of Newtonian (overdamped) vs Bagnoldian (inertial) rheology is related to the formation of large connected clusters of disks, and that sharp transitions may exist between the two as system parameters vary. In the limit of strongly inelastic collisions, we find that rheological curves collapse to a well-defined limit when plotted against an appropriate dimensionless strain rate.
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the steady shear flow of dense assemblies of anisotropic spherocylindrical particles of varying aspect ratios. Comparing frictionless and frictional particles we discuss the specific role of frictional inter-particle forces for the rheological properties of the system. In the frictional system we evidence a shear-thickening regime, similar to that for spherical particles. Furthermore, friction suppresses alignment of the spherocylinders along the flow direction. Finally, the jamming density in frictional systems is rather insensitive to variations…
We perform numerical simulations to determine the shear stress and pressure of steady-state shear flow in a soft-disk model in two dimensions at zero temperature in the vicinity of the jamming transition ϕ_J. We use critical point scaling analyses to determine the critical behavior at jamming, and we find that it is crucial to include corrections to scaling for a reliable analysis. We find that the relative size of these corrections are much smaller for pressure than for shear stress. We furthermore find a superlinear behavior for pressure and shear stress above ϕ_J, both from the scaling anal…
We carry out constant volume simulations of steady-state, shear driven flow in a simple model of athermal, bidisperse, soft-core, frictionless disks in two dimensions, using a dissipation law that gives rise to Bagnoldian rheology. Focusing on the small strain rate limit, we map out the rheological behavior as a function of particle packing fraction $ϕ$ and a parameter $Q$ that measures the elasticity of binary particle collisions. We find a $Q^*(ϕ)$ that marks the clear crossover from a region characteristic of strongly inelastic collisions, $Q<Q^*$, to a region characteristic of weakly inela…
The flow of frictionless granular particles is studied with stress-controlled discrete element modeling simulations for systems varying in size from 300 to 100,000 particles. The volume fraction and shear stress ratio $μ$ are relatively insensitive to system size fo a wide range of inertial numbers $I$. Second-order effects in strain rate, such as second normal stress differences, require large system sizes to accurately extract meaningful results, notably a non-monotonic dependence in the first normal stress difference with strain rate. The first-order rheological response represented by the …
We investigate the structure and mechanical behavior of assemblies of frictionless, nearly rigid equal-sized beads, in the quasistatic limit, by numerical simulation. Three different loading paths are explored: triaxial compression, triaxial extension and simple shear. Generalizing recent results [1], we show that the material, despite rather strong finite sample size effects, is able to sustain a finite deviator stress in the macroscopic limit, along all three paths, without dilatancy. The shape of the yield surface is adequately described by a Lade-Duncan (rather than Mohr-Coulomb) criterion…
We study granular suspensions under a variety of extensional deformations and simple shear using numerical simulations. The viscosity and Trouton's ratio (the ratio of extensional to shear viscosity) are computed as functions of solids volume fraction $ϕ$ close to the limit of zero inertia. Suspensions of frictionless particles follow a Newtonian Trouton's ratio for $ϕ$ all the way up to $ϕ_0$, a universal jamming point that is independent of deformation type. In contrast, frictional particles lead to a deformation-type-dependent jamming fraction $ϕ_m$, which is largest for shear flows. Trouto…
We carry out constant volume simulations of steady-state, shear driven, rheology in a simple model of bidisperse, soft-core, frictionless disks in two dimensions, using a dissipation law that gives rise to Bagnoldian rheology. We carry out a detailed critical scaling analysis of our resulting data for pressure $p$ and shear stress $σ$, in order to determine the critical exponent $β$ that describes the algebraic divergence of the Bagnold transport coefficients, as the jamming transition is approached from below. We show that it is necessary, for the strain rates considered in this work, to cons…
The statement of the title is shown by numerical simulation of homogeneously sheared packings of frictionless, nearly rigid beads in the quasistatic limit. Results coincide for steady flows at constant shear rate γ in the limit of small γ and static approaches, in which packings are equilibrated under growing deviator stresses. The internal friction angle ϕ, equal to 5.76 $\pm$ 0.22 degrees in simple shear, is independent on the average pressure P in the rigid limit. It is shown to stem from the ability of stable frictionless contact networks to form stress-induced anisotr…
We examine the network of forces to be expected in a static assembly of hard, frictionless spherical beads of random sizes, such as a colloidal glass. Such an assembly is minimally connected: the ratio of constraint equations to contact forces approaches unity for a large assembly. However, the bead positions in a finite subregion of the assembly are underdetermined. Thus to maintain equilibrium, half of the exterior contact forces are determined by the other half. We argue that the transmission of force may be regarded as unidirectional, in contrast to the transmission of force in an elastic …
Oscillatory shear has been widely used to study the rheological properties of suspensions under unsteady shear. Furthermore, recent works have shown that oscillatory flows can improve the flowability of dense suspensions. While most studies have been done under constant volume we here study oscillatory shear flows of a two-dimensional suspensions using a normal pressure-controlled set-up. To characterise the rheology, we introduce both a complex macroscopic friction coefficient $μ^{*}$, following the convention of the complex viscosity $η^{*}$, and a shear-rate averaged viscous number $J'$. Th…
We study relaxation and rheology of dense athermal suspensions of frictionless particles close below the jamming density. Our key quantity, the relaxation time---determined from the exponential decay of the energy after the shearing has suddenly been switched off---is argued to be a determining factor behind the algebraic divergence of various quantities as the jamming density is approached from below. We also define and measure the ``dissipation time'', which is obtained directly in shearing simulations and find that it behaves similarly to the relaxation time. Comparing shear viscosity with …
The rheology of dense granular flows is studied numerically in a shear cell controlled at constant pressure and shear stress, confined between two granular shear flows. We show that a liquid state can be achieved even far below the yield stress, whose flow can be described with the same rheology as above the yield stress. A non-local constitutive relation is derived from dimensional analysis through a gradient expansion and calibrated using the spatial relaxation of velocity profiles observed under homogeneous stresses. Both for frictional and frictionless grains, the relaxation length is foun…
Rheological properties of a dense granular material consisting of frictionless spheres are investigated. It is found that the shear stress, the pressure, and the kinetic temperature obey critical scaling near the jamming transition point, which is considered as a critical point. These scaling laws have some peculiar properties in view of conventional critical phenomena because the exponents depend on the interparticle force models so that they are not universal. It is also found that these scaling laws imply the relation between the exponents that describe the growing correlation length.
We report on numerical simulations of simple models of athermal, bidisperse, soft-core, massive disks in two dimensions, as a function of packing fraction $ϕ$, inelasticity of collisions as measured by a parameter $Q$, and applied uniform shear strain rate $\dotγ$. Our particles have contact interactions consisting of normally directed elastic repulsion and viscous dissipation, as well as tangentially directed viscous dissipation, but no inter-particle Coulombic friction. Mapping the phase diagram in the $(ϕ,Q)$ plane for small $\dotγ$, we find a sharp first-order rheological phase transition …
We investigate the rheology of granular materials via molecular dynamics simulations of homogeneous, simple shear flows of soft, frictional, noncohesive spheres. In agreement with previous results for frictionless particles, we observe three flow regimes existing in different domains of particle volume fraction and shear rate, with all stress data collapsing upon scaling by powers of the distance to the jamming point. Though this jamming point is a function of the interparticle friction coefficient, the relation between pressure and strain rate at this point is found to be independent of frict…
The screening of hydrodynamic interactions (HI) essentially affects macroscopic properties of polymeric solutions. This screening depends not only on the polymer concentration but has a dynamic nature. In the present work, a bead-spring theory is developed, in which this phenomenon is described for solutions of nonentangled polymer coils. The equation of motion for the beads of a test polymer is solved together with the Brinkman's equation for the solvent velocity that takes into account the presence of other coils in solution. The time correlation functions for the polymer normal modes are fo…
We investigate criticality near the jamming transition in both quiescent systems and those under shear by considering the effect of mechanical training on the jamming transition and nonlinear rheology. We simulate frictionless soft particles undergoing athermal quasi-static shear using initial configurations trained with athermal quasi-static cyclic volume deformations. The jamming transition density of the initial configuration $φ_{\rm J0}$ is systematically altered by tuning the ``depth'' of mechanical training. We exert a steady shear on these configurations and observe either shear jamming…
We present a minimalistic approach to simulations of force transmission through granular systems. We start from a configuration containing cohesive (tensile) contact forces and use an adaptive procedure to find the stable configuration with no tensile contact forces. The procedure works by sequentially removing and adding individual contacts between adjacent beads, while the bead positions are not modified. In a series of two-dimensional realizations, the resulting force networks are shown to satisfy a linear constraint among the three components of average stress, as anticipated by recent the…
We use large scale computer simulations and finite size scaling analysis to study the shear rheology of dense three-dimensional suspensions of frictionless non-Brownian particles in the vicinity of the jamming transition. We perform simulations of soft repulsive particles at constant shear rate, constant pressure, and finite system size, and study carefully the asymptotic limits of large system sizes and infinitely hard particle repulsion. Extending earlier analysis by about two orders of magnitude, we first study the asymptotic behavior of the shear viscosity in the hard particle limit. We co…
Particles suspended in a Newtonian fluid raise the viscosity and also generally give rise to a shear-rate dependent rheology. In particular, pronounced shear thickening may be observed at large solid volume fractions. In a recent article (R. Seto, R. Mari, J. F. Morris, and M. M. Denn., Phys. Rev. Lett., 111:218301, 2013) we have considered the minimum set of components to reproduce the experimentally observed shear thickening behavior, including Discontinuous Shear Thickening (DST). We have found frictional contact forces to be essential, and were able to reproduce the experimental behavior b…
We numerically investigate the rheological properties of jammed frictionless granular materials under an oscillatory shear in terms of our simulation of the distinct element method. It is demonstrated that the constitutive relation between the shear stress and the shear strain of grains strongly depends on the amplitude and the frequency of the oscillatory shear. For a small amplitude region, the granular material behaves as a visco-elastic material characterized by the Kelvin-Voigt model, while it behaves as a yield stress liquid for a large amplitude region. We find that the rheology of grai…
We use numerical simulations to study the flow of a bidisperse mixture of athermal, frictionless, soft-core two dimensional spherocylinders driven in uniform steady state shear. Energy dissipation is via a viscous drag with respect to a uniformly sheared host fluid, giving a model for a non-Brownian suspension with a Newtonian rheology. We study pressure $p$ and deviatoric shear stress $σ$ as a function of packing fraction $ϕ$, strain rate $\dotγ$, and a parameter $α$ that measures the asphericity of the particles. We consider the anisotropy of the stress tensor, the macroscopic friction $μ=σ/…
We develop an analytical bead-spring model to investigate the role of non-linear rheology on the dynamics of electrified jets in the early stage of the electrospinning process. Qualitative arguments, parameter studies as well as numerical simulations, show that the elongation of the charged jet filament is significantly reduced in the presence of a non-zero yield stress. This may have beneficial implications for the optimal design of future electrospinning experiments.
We consider the rheology of soft-core frictionless disks in two dimensions in the neighborhood of the athermal jamming transition. From numerical simulations of bidisperse, overdamped, particles, we argue that the divergence of the viscosity below jamming is characteristic of the hard-core limit, independent of the particular soft-core interaction. We develop a mapping from soft-core to hard-core particles that recovers all the critical behavior found in earlier scaling analyses. Using this mapping we derive a duality relation that gives the exponent of the non-linear Herschel-Bulkley rheology…
We use numerical simulations to study the flow of athermal, frictionless, soft-core two dimensional spherocylinders driven by a uniform steady-state simple shear applied at a fixed volume and a fixed finite strain rate $\dotγ$. Energy dissipation is via a viscous drag with respect to a uniformly sheared host fluid, giving a simple model for flow in a non-Brownian suspension with Newtonian rheology. We study the resulting spatial structure of the sheared system, and compute correlation functions of the velocity, the particle density, the nematic order parameter, and the particle angular velocit…
We use numerical simulations to study the flow of a bidisperse mixture of athermal, frictionless, soft-core two dimensional spherocylinders driven by a uniform steady-state simple shear applied at a fixed volume and a fixed finite strain rate $\dotγ$. Energy dissipation is via a viscous drag with respect to a uniformly sheared host fluid, giving a simple model for flow in a non-Brownian suspension with Newtonian rheology. We study the rheological response of dense suspensions of elliptical particles, with an aspect ratio equal to 3, under oscillatory shear flows and imposed pressure by numerical simulations. Like for the isotropic particles, we find that the oscillatory shear flows respect the Cox-Merz rule at large oscillatory strains but differ at low strains, with a lower viscosity than the steady shear and higher shear jamming packing fractions. However, unlike the isotropic cases (i.e., discs and spheres), frictionless ellipses get dynamically arrested in their initial orientational configuration at small …
We carry out overdamped simulations in a simple model of jamming - a collection of bi-disperse soft core frictionless disks in two dimensions - with the aim to explore the finite size dependence of different quantities, both the relaxation time obtained from the relaxation of the energy and the pressure-equivalent of the shear viscosity. The motivation for the paper is the observation [Nishikawa et al., J. Stat. Phys, 182, 37 (2021)] that there are finite size effects in the relaxation time, $τ$, that give problems in the determination of the critical divergence, and the claim that this is due…
A robust non-Newtonian fluid model of dilute polyelectrolyte solutions is derived from kinetic theory arguments. Polyelectrolyte molecules are modeled as finitely elongated nonlinear elastic dumbbells, where effective charges (interacting through a simple Coulomb force) are added to the beads in order to model the repulsion between the charged sections of polyelectrolyte chains. It is shown that the relative strength of this repulsion is regulated by the electric-to-elastic energy ratio, $E$, which is one of the key parameters of the model. In particular, $E$ accounts for the intrinsic rigidit…
The dynamic rheology of a polymer melt composed of short chains with ten beads between rapidly oscillating plates is investigated for various oscillation frequencies by using the hybrid simulation of the molecular dynamics and computational fluid dynamics. In the rapidly oscillating plates, non-uniform boundary layer flows are generated over the plate due to inertia of the fluid, and the local rheological properties of the melt are spatially varied according to the local flow fields. Far from the plate, the local strain decreases as the oscillation frequency increases such that the dynamic rhe…
The critical rheology of sheared frictional granular materials near jamming transition is numer- ically investigated. It is confirmed that there exist a true critical density which characterizes the onset of the yield stress, and two fictitious critical densities which characterize the scaling laws of rheological properties. We find the existence of a hysteresis loop between two of the critical densities for each friction coefficient. It is noteworthy that the critical scaling law for frictionless jamming transition seems to be still valid even for frictional jamming despite using fictitious c…
We consider the shear rheology of concentrated suspensions of non-Brownian frictional particles. The key result of our study is the emergence of a pronounced shear-thickening regime, where frictionless particles would normally undergo shear-thinning. We clarify that shear thickening in our simulations is due to enhanced energy dissipation via frictional inter-particle forces. Moreover, we evidence the formation of dynamically correlated particle-clusters of size $ξ$, which contribute to shear thickening via an increase in \emph{viscous} dissipation. A scaling argument gives $η\sim ξ^2$, which …
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study dynamics of a model polymer melt composed of short chains with bead number N=10 in supercooled states. In quiescent conditions, the stress relaxation function $G(t)$ is calculated, which exhibits a stretched exponential relaxation on the time scale of the $α$ relaxation time $τ_α$ and ultimately follows the Rouse dynamics characterized by the time $τ_{\rm R} \sim N^2 τ_α$. After application of shear $\gdot$, transient stress growth $σ_{xy}(t)/\gdot$ first obeys the linear growth $\int_0^t dt'G(t')$ for strain less than 0.1 but saturates into a non…
We study the rheology of amorphous packings of soft, frictionless particles close to jamming. Implementing a quasistatic simulation method we generate a well defined ensemble of states that directly samples the system at its yield-stress. A continuous jamming transition from a freely-flowing state to a yield stress situation takes place at a well defined packing fraction, where the scaling laws characteristic of isostatic solids are observed. We propose that long-range correlations observed below the transition are dominated by this isostatic point, while those that are observed above the tran…
Macroscale chains have been proposed to give insight into the physics of molecular polymer systems. Nevertheless, understanding the rheological response of systems of quasi-one-dimensional semiflexible materials, such as bead-chain packings, is currently a great challenge. We study the nonlinear rheology of random assemblies of macroscale chains -- including steel bead chains and cooked spaghetti -- under oscillatory shear. We show that a universal transition from localized to wide shear zones occurs upon increasing the strain amplitude, for a wide range of lengths, flexibilities, and other st…
