Anomalous magnetic and transport properties observed in the La0.8-xEuxSr0.2MnO3 (0.04 l.e x l.e. 0.36) compounds are presented in this paper. The Curie temperature (TC) decreases from 260 K for x = 0.04 to 188 K for x = 0.16 and surprisingly thereafter increases for higher Eu concentrations (x > 0.16) and becomes nearly constant ~230 K. Resistivity increases with Eu concentration up to x = 0.16 but decreases for higher Eu concentration (x > 0.16). In the magnetoresistance data, in addition to a peak corresponding to the insulator-metal transition at (TI-M1), a second peak is also observed at a relatively lower temperature, (TI-M2). Both TI-M1 and TI-M2 follow the same trend as TC. The unique variation of TC and magnetoresistance is explained on the basis of structure and disorder correlated to microscopic electronic phase segregation. The studies with the existing studies also point to the universibility of this consideration.
We present electrical transport data for single-crystalline Co$_2$FeSi which provide clear-cut evidence that this Heusler compound is truly a half-metallic ferromagnet, i.e. it possesses perfect spin-polarization. More specifically, the temperature dependence of $ρ$ is governed by electron scattering off magnons which are thermally excited over a sizeable gap $Δ\approx 100 K$ ($\sim 9 meV$) separating the electronic majority states at the Fermi level from the unoccupied minority states. As a consequence, electron-magnon scattering is only relevant at $T\gtrsimΔ$ but freezes out at lower temper…
Among the members of the series R2PdSi3 (R= Rare-earths), the magnetic behavior of the Nd compound is interesting in some respects. This compound is considered to order ferromagnetically (below 16 K), unlike other members of this series which order antiferromagnetically. In addition, magnetic ordering temperature (To) is significantly enhanced with respect to de Gennes scaled value. In order to understand the magnetism of this compound better, we have investigated the magnetic behavior in detail (under external pressure as well) and also of its solid solutions based on substitutions at Nd and …
The low-temperature transport properties (resistivity, thermal conductivity, thermoelectric power) are experimentally investigated for the compound YbMn2Sb2. Large Seebeck coefficient and nearly linear temperature dependence of resistivity are obtained. The thermal conductivity is large and has mainly phonon origin. Appreciable anomalies of transport characteristics near the antiferromagnetic transition point are found. Possible influence of pseudo-Kondo scattering is discussed.
Magnetic, thermal, magnetocaloric and transport properties of polycrystalline HoRuSi have been studied. It was found that the compound shows magnetic transitions at T1=18 K and T2=8 K. Magnetization data reveal that the ferromagnetic ordering is dominant in this compound. Magnetocaloric effect has been estimated from M-H-T data and the -ΔSM has been found to be 12.8 J/kg K for field of 50 kOe, which is comparable to some potential refrigerant materials in same temperature regime.
We have synthesized and characterized laser-deposited film samples of perovskite BaCrO_{3}, a missing member of the perovskite-chromate family. The BaCrO_{3} films have a substantially larger lattice constant than other chromates, are insulating, and exhibit weak ferromagnetism likely associated with canted antiferromagnetism. Comparison with the other sister compounds CaCrO_{3} and SrCrO_{3} suggest an anomalous Mott transition where magnetism is independent of whether the compound is metallic or insulating
We report the results of our investigation of magnetization and heat capacity on a series of compounds Ce1-xYxNiGe2 (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4) under the influence of external magnetic field. Our studies of the thermodynamic quantity -dM/dT on these compounds indicate that magnetic frustration persists in Ce0.9Y0.1NiGe2, as also reported for the parent compound CeNiGe2. The weak signature of this frustration is also noted in Ce0.8Y0.2NiGe2, whereas, it is suppressed in Ce0.6Y0.4NiGe2. Heat capacity studies on Ce0.9Y0.1NiGe2 and Ce0.8Y0.2NiGe2 indicate the presence of a new magnetic anomaly at high …
Anomalous magnetic properties of the double perovskite ruthenates compound Sr2YRuO6 are reported here. Magnetization measurements as a function of temperature in low magnetic fields show clear evidence for two components of magnetic order (TM1 ~ 32K and TM2 ~ 27K) aligned opposite to each other with respect to the magnetic field direction even though only Ru5+moments can order magnetically in this compound. The second component of the magnetic order at TM2 ~ 27K results only in a magnetization reversal, and not in the negative magnetization when the magnetization is measured in the field coole…
We examine static spin susceptibilities $χ_{αβ}({\bf q})$ of spin components $S_α$ and $S_β$ in the non-centrosymmetric tetragonal system. These show anomalous momentum dependences like $χ_{xx}({\bf q})-χ_{yy}({\bf q})\sim q_x^2-q_y^2$ and $χ_{xy}({\bf q})+χ_{yx}({\bf q})\sim q_x q_y$, which vanish in centrosymmetric systems. The magnitudes of the anomalous spin susceptibilities are enhanced by the on-site Coulomb interaction, especially, around an ordering wave vector. The significant and anomalous momentum dependences of these susceptibilities are explained by a group theoretical analysis. A…
The compound, Nd7Rh3, crystallizing in Th7Fe3-type hexagonal structure, has been shown recently by us to exhibit a signature of magnetic phase-coexistence phenomenon below 10 K after a field cycling, uncharacteristic of stoichiometric intermetallic compounds, bearing a relevance to the trends in the field of electronic phase-separation. In order to characterize this compound further, we have carried out dc magnetic susceptibility (chi), electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance and heat-capacity measurements as a function temperature (T= 1.8 to 300 K). The results reveal that this compound exh…
We have investigated magnetotransport properties and the topological electronic structure of the half-Heusler compound TbPtBi. Our experiments reveal an exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the canted antiferromagnetic state of TbPtBi with the anomalous Hall angle (AHA) reaching ~0.68-0.76, which is a few times larger than the previously reported record in GdPtBi. First-principles electronic structure and the associated anomalous Hall conductivity were computed in order to interpret the experimental results. Our analysis shows that the AHE in TbPtBi does not originate from the We…
To elucidate the origin of spin structure-driven anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in pyrochlore compounds, we construct the $t_{2g}$-orbital kagome lattice model and analyze the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC). We reveal that a conduction electron acquires a Berry phase due to the complex d-orbital wavefunction in the presence of spin-orbit interaction. This ``orbital Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect'' produces the AHC that is drastically changed in the presence of non-collinear spin structure. In both ferromagnetic compound Nd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ and paramagnetic compound Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, the AHC given by…
Effect of Ti doping on the electrical transport and magnetic properties of layered Na0.8Co1-xTixO2 compounds has been investigated. The lattice parameters a and c increase with x. A minor amount of Ti doping results in a metal-insulator transition at low temperatures. For samples with x > 0.03, the variable-range hopping process dominates the transport behavior above a certain temperature. The temperature dependence of magnetization of all the samples is found to obey the Curie-Weiss law. The mechanism of the doping effect is discussed.
Motivated by fine tuning of the magnetic and topological properties of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ via defect engineering, in this work, we report the crystal growth of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and related compounds using vapor transport method and characterization of vapor transported crystals by measuring elemental analysis, magnetic and transport properties, and scanning tunneling microscopy. For the growth of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ single crystals, I$_2$, MnI$_2$ , MnCl$_2$, TeCl$_4$, or MoCl$_5$ are all effective transport agents; chemical transportation occurs faster in the presence of iodides than chlorides. MnBi$_2$…
Polycrystalline HoSn1.1Ge0.9 and DySn1.1Ge0.9 compounds have been studied by means of different experimental probes. Both the compounds are antiferromagnetic and show metamagnetic transition at low temperatures. HoSn1.1Ge0.9 shows a sign change in magnetocaloric effect (MCE) and magnetoresistance (MR) with field, which is attributed to the metamagnetic transition. DySn1.1Ge0.9 shows characteristics of a typical antiferromagnet, as evidenced by magnetization, MCE and MR data. 119Sn Mössbauer studies show hyperfine splitting at low temperatures, consistent with magnetization data. Thermoelectric…
We present a study of the magnetic field-dependent thermal transport in the spin S=1 chain material Ni(C2H8N2)2NO2(ClO4) (NENP). The measured thermal conductivity is found to be very sensitive to the field-induced changes in the spin excitation spectrum. The magnetic contribution to the total heat conductivity is analyzed in terms of a quasiparticle model, and we obtain a temperature and momentum independent mean free path. This implies that the motion of quasiparticles is effectively three dimensional despite the tiny interchain coupling.
We report optimized crystal growth conditions for the quarternary compound AgCrP$_2$S$_6$ by chemical vapor transport. Compositional and structural characterization of the obtained crystals were carried out by means of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. AgCrP$_2$S$_6$ is structurally closely related to the $M_2$P$_2$S$_6$ family, which contains several compounds that are under investigation as 2D magnets. As-grown crystals exhibit a plate-like, layered morphology as well as a hexagonal habitus. AgCrP$_2$S$_6$ crystallizes in monoclinic symmetry in the space grou…
We present the results of measurements of the thermal conductivity of the quasi one-dimensional spin S=1/2 chain compound SrCuO_2 in the temperature range between 0.4 and 300 K along the directions parallel and perpendicular to the chains. An anomalously enhanced thermal conductivity is observed along the chains. The analysis of the present data and a comparison with analogous recent results for Sr_2CuO_3 and other similar materials demonstrates that this behavior is generic for cuprates with copper-oxygen chains and strong intrachain interactions. The observed anomalies are attributed to the …
We report bulk superconductivity at 2.5K in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound through the DC magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements. The synthesized LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound is crystallized in tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm and Reitveld refined lattice parameters are a= 4.15(1)A and c=14.02(2)A. The lower critical field of Hc1= 40Oe, at temperature 2K is estimated through the low field magnetization measurements. The LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound showed metallic normal state electrical resistivity with residual resistivity value of 1.35mΩ-cm. The compound is type-II su…
We report a layered ternary selenide BaPt4Se6 featuring sesqui-selenide Pt2Se3 layers sandwiched by Ba atoms. The Pt2Se3 layers in this compound can be derived from the Dirac-semimetal PtSe2 phase with Se vacancies that form a honeycomb structure. This structure results in a Pt (VI) and Pt (II) mixed-valence compound with both PtSe6 octahedra and PtSe4 square net coordination configurations. Temperature dependent electrical transport measurements suggest two distinct anomalies: a resistivity crossover, mimic to the metal-insulator (M-I) transition at ~150K, and a resistivity plateau at tempera…
Using a combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments with first principle calculations, we demonstrate that insulating KCuO_2 contains Cu in an unusually-high formal-3+ valence state, the ligand-to-metal (O to Cu) charge transfer energy is intriguingly negative (Delta~ -1.5 eV) and has a dominant (~60%) ligand-hole character in the ground state akin to the high Tc cuprate Zhang-Rice state. Unlike most other formal Cu^{3+} compounds, the Cu 2p XAS spectra of KCuO_2 exhibits pronounced 3d^8 (Cu^{3+}) multiplet structures, which accounts for ~40% of its ground state wave-function. Ab-…
We review the anomalous properties of heavy fermion compounds like CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ or CeMIn$_5$ close to a zero temperature phase transition called a quantum critical point. Anomalous behavior of the resistivity, specific heat and magnetic properties observed in various compounds suggests a fundamental breakdown of the Fermi liquid theory. Recent measurements on YbRh$_2$Si$_2$, field-tuned through the quantum critical point, provide interesting insights on the evolution of the Fermi liquid close to criticality. We discuss the possibility of a kind of spin-charge separation at the quantum cr…
The in-plane Hall coefficient $R_{H}(T)$ of CeRhIn$_{5}$, CeIrIn$_{5}$, and CeCoIn$_{5}$ and their respective non-magnetic lanthanum analogs are reported in fields to 90 kOe and at temperatures from 2 K to 325 K. $R_{H}(T)$ is negative, field-independent, and dominated by skew-scattering above $\sim$ 50 K in the Ce compounds. $R_{H}(H \to 0)$ becomes increasingly negative below 50 K and varies with temperature in a manner that is inconsistent with skew scattering. Field-dependent measurements show that the low-T anomaly is strongly suppressed when the applied field is increased to 90 kOe. Meas…
High precision measurements of Hall RH(T) and Seebeck S(T) coefficients have been carried out for the first time on single crystals of rare earth dodecaborides RB12 (R - Ho, Er, Tm, Lu) at temperatures 1.8 - 300K. Low temperature anomalies associated with antiferromagnetic phase transitions in HoB12, ErB12 and TmB12 compounds have been detected on the temperature dependencies of RH(T) and S(T). The estimated values of charge carriers mobility allowed us to conclude about the appreciable influence of spin fluctuations on the charge transport in these compounds with B12 atomic clusters.
We report zero and longitudinal magnetic field muon spin relaxation measurements of the spin S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain material SrCuO2. We find that in a weak applied magnetic field B the spin-lattice relaxation rate follows a power law B^n with n=-0.9(3). This result is temperature independent for 5K < T < 300 K. Within conformal field theory and using the Müller ansatz we conclude ballistic spin transport in SrCuO2.
The anisotropy in electrical transport and thermal behavior of single crystalline R$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ series of compounds is presented. These compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure with space gropup P4/mmm. The nonmagnetic counterparts of the series namely Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ and Lu$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$show a behavior consistent with the low density of states at the fermi level. In Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$, a possibility of charge density wave transition is observed at $\approx$ 30 K. Gd$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ and Er$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ show a presence of short range correlation above the magnetic ordering temp…
The low-temperature thermal conductivity $κ$ of the spin-ice compound Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ shows pronounced hysteresis as a function of magnetic field. Here, we investigate how these hysteresis effects depend on temperature, the magnetic-field direction, the rate of magnetic-field change, and on the direction of the heat current. In addition, the time-dependent relaxation of the heat conductivity is investigated. These measurements yield information about possible equilibrium states and reveal that in the low-field and low-temperature region extremely slow relaxation processes occur.
Elementary excitations in the spin-ice compound Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ can be described as magnetic monopoles propagating independently within the pyrochlore lattice formed by magnetic Dy ions. We studied the magnetic-field dependence of the thermal conductivity κ(B) for B || [001] and observe clear evidence for magnetic heat transport originating from the monopole excitations. The magnetic contribution κ_{mag} is strongly field-dependent and correlates with the magnetization M(B). The diffusion coefficient obtained from the ratio of κ_{mag} and the magnetic specific heat is strongly enhanced below…
We present the results of measurements of the thermal conductivity $κ$ of the spin S=1 chain compound AgVP_2S_6 in the temperature range between 2 and 300 K and with the heat flow directed either along or perpendicular to the chain direction. The analysis of the anisotropy of the heat transport allowed for the identification of a small but non-negligible magnon contribution $κ_m$ along the chains, superimposed on the dominant phonon contribution $κ_ph$. At temperatures above about 100 K the energy diffusion constant D_E(T), calculated from the $κ_m(T)$ data, exhibits similar features as the sp…
We have performed in-plane transport measurements on the two-dimensional organic salt $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl. A variable (gas) pressure technique allows for a detailed study of the changes in conductivity through the insulator-to-metal transition. We identify four different transport regimes as a function of pressure and temperature (corresponding to insulating, semi-conducting, ''bad metal'', and strongly correlated Fermi liquid behaviours). Marked hysteresis is found in the transition region, which displays complex physics that we attribute to strong spatial inhomogeneities. A…
We present experiments on the magnetic field-dependent thermal transport in the spin-1/2 ladder system (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$. The thermal conductivity $κ(B)$ is only weakly affected by the field-induced transitions between the gapless Luttinger-liquid state realized for $B_{c1}< B < B_{c2}$ and the gapped states, suggesting the absence of a direct contribution of the spin excitations to the heat transport. We observe, however, that the thermal conductivity is strongly suppressed by the magnetic field deeply within the Luttinger-liquid state. These surprising observations are discussed i…
Transport behavior characterized by a low-temperature electrical resistivity that displays a power-law behavior $ρ(T\to 0) \propto T^s$ with an exponent $s<2$, is commonly observed in magnetic materials in both the magnetic and nonmagnetic phases. We give a pedagogical overview of this phenomenon that summarizes both the experimental situation and the state of its theoretical understanding. We also put it in context by drawing parallels with unusual power-law transport behavior in other systems.
We report the study on the low-temperature heat transport of Ba_3Mn_2O_8 single crystal, a layered spin-dimer compound exhibiting the magnetic-field-induced magnetic order or the magnon Bose-Einstein condensation. The thermal conductivities (κ) along both the ab plane and the c axis show nearly isotropic dependence on magnetic field, that is, κis strongly suppressed with increasing field, particularly at the critical fields of magnetic phase transitions. These results indicate that the magnetic excitations play a role of scattering phonons and the scattering effect is enhanced when the magneti…
Here, we present the comparative study of magnetotransport properties of recently discovered Ta2PdTe6 and Nb2PdS5 superconductors. The XRD and magnetotransport measurements are performed on these samples to investigate structure and superconducting properties as well as normal state transport properties of these compounds. Both the compounds are crystallized in monoclinic structure within space group C2m. Here, we observe superconductivity in both the compounds Ta2PdTe6 (Tc =4.4 K) and Nb2PdS5 (Tc =6.6 K). We see a linear magnetoresistance in Ta2PdTe6 as well as violation of Kohler rule in sam…
We review the Kubo formulae relevant to study anomalous transport properties of relativistic fluids. We apply this formalism to perform a computation of the transport coefficients in a holographic massive gravity model including vorticity and external electromagnetic fields. We find an interesting phase in which the electric DC conductivity is negligible, while the anomalous conductivities turn out to be nonvanishing.
Transport in metals with strongly anisotropic single-particle spectrum is studied. Coherent band transport in all directions, described by the standard Boltzmann equation, is shown to withstand both elastic and inelastic scattering as long as $E_Fτ\gg 1$. A model of phonon-assisted tunneling via resonant states located in between the layers is suggested to explain a non-monotonic temperature dependence of the c-axis resistivity observed in experiments.
Non-Hermitian materials can not only exhibit exotic energy band structures but also an anomalous velocity induced by non-Hermitian anomalous Berry connection as predicted by the semiclassical equations of motion for Bloch electrons. However, it is not clear how the modified semiclassical dynamics modifies transport phenomena. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the emergence of anomalous oscillations driven by either an external dc or ac electric field, which arise from non-Hermitian anomalous Berry connection. Moreover, it is a well-known fact that geometric structures of electric wave functio…
In highly conductive metals with sufficiently strong momentum-conserving scattering, the electron momentum is regarded as a long-lived quantity, whose dynamics is described by an emergent hydrodynamic theory. In this paper, we develop an electron hydrodynamic theory for noncentrosymmetric metals, where a novel class of electron fluids is realized by lowering crystal symmetries and the resulting geometrical effects. The obtained hydrodynamic equation suggests a nontrivial analogy between electron fluids in noncentrosymmetric metals and chiral fluids in vacuum, and predicts novel hydrodynamic tr…
In many strongly correlated electron systems, remarkable violation of the relaxation time approximation (RTA) is observed. The most famous example would be high-Tc superconductors (HTSCs), and similar anomalous transport phenomena have been observed in metals near their antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum critical point (QCP). Here, we develop a transport theory involving resistivity and Hall coefficient on the basis of the microscopic Fermi liquid theory, by considering the current vertex correction (CVC). In nearly AF Fermi liquids, the CVC accounts for the significant enhancements in the Hall co…
Quantum anomalies give rise to new non-dissipative transport phenomena in relativistic fluids induced by external electromagnetic fields and vortices. These phenomena can be studied in holographic models with Chern-Simons couplings dual to anomalies in field theory. We perform a computation in AdS/CFT of the anomalous transport coefficients in a holographic massive gravity model, and find that the anomalous conductivities turn out to be independent of the holographic disorder couplings of the model. To arrive at this result we suggest a new definition of the energy-momentum tensor in presence …
Quantum anomalies are one of the subtlest properties of relativistic field theories. They give rise to non-dissipative transport coefficients in the hydrodynamic expansion. In particular a magnetic field can induce an anomalous current via the chiral magnetic effect. In this work we explore the possibility that anomalies can induce a chiral magnetic effect in non-anomalous currents as well. This effect is implemented through an explicit breaking of the symmetries.
We summarize recent advances in the application of the equilibrium partition function formalism for the study of the transport coefficients of relativistic fluids induced by quantum anomalies, at first and second order in the hydrodynamic expansion. We provide results for theories with Abelian and non-Abelian chiral fermions, and discuss some features of the corresponding constitutive relations.
Many experimentally relevant quantum spin chains are approximately integrable, and support long-lived quasiparticle excitations. A canonical example of integrable model of quantum magnetism is the XXZ spin chain, for which energy spreads ballistically, but, surprisingly, high-temperature spin transport can be diffusive or superdiffusive. We review the transport properties of this model using an intuitive quasiparticle picture that relies on the recently introduced framework of generalized hydrodynamics. We discuss how anomalous linear response properties emerge from hierarchies of quasiparticl…
Chiral anomalies have profound impact on the transport properties of relativistic fluids. In four dimensions there are different types of anomalies, pure gauge and mixed gauge-gravitational anomalies. They give rise to two new non-dissipative transport coefficients, the chiral magnetic conductivity and the chiral vortical conductivity. They can be calculated from the microscopic degrees of freedom with the help of Kubo formulae. We review the calculation of the anomalous transport coefficients via Kubo formulae with a particular emphasis on the contribution of the mixed gauge-gravitational ano…
