We prove an index theorem for Toeplitz operators on the quarter-plane using the index theory for generalized Toeplitz operators introduced by G. J. Murphy. To prove this index theorem we construct an indicial triple on the tensor product of two C*-algebras provided with indicial triples with general conditions. We show that our results can be extended to some extensions of the theory of Toeplitz operators on the quarter-plane.
We consider an action of the real line on a C*-algebra for which there is a centre-valued invariant trace. We define a family of Toeplitz operators with symbols in the original algebra. When the symbol is invertible, the Toeplitz operator is Fredholm in an appropriate sense, and we give a formula for the index using a notion of centre-valued winding number defined using the trace. The results and techniques generalise previous results of the authors for scalar-valued traces.
Let $Γ$ be a discrete icc subgroup of PSL(2,R) of infinite covolume. and let M denote the quotient of the unit disc by $Γ$. We prove that a Toeplitz operator with $Γ$-invariant symbol f in C(M) is Brauer Fredholm if its symbol is invertible on the boundary of M and its Brauer index is equal to the winding number of f at the boundary. We construct the associated extension of the algebra of functions continuous on the boundary of M by the Brauer ideal in the C*-algebra generated by such operators.
We prove an index theorem for Toeplitz operators on irreducible tube--type domains and we extend our results to Toeplitz operators with matrix symbols. In order to prove our index theorem, we proved a result asserting that a non--vanishing function on the Shilov boundary of a tube--type bounded symmetric domain, not necessarily irreducible, is equal to a unimodular function defined as the product of powers of generic norms times an exponential function.
Fowler introduced the notion of a product system: a collection of Hilbert bimodules $\mathbf{X}=\left\{\mathbf{X}_p:p\in P\right\}$ indexed by a semigroup $P$, endowed with a multiplication implementing isomorphisms $\mathbf{X}_p\otimes_A \mathbf{X}_q\cong \mathbf{X}_{pq}$. When $P$ is quasi-lattice ordered, Fowler showed how to associate a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{NT}_\mathbf{X}$ to $\mathbf{X}$, generated by a universal representation satisfying some covariance condition. In this article we prove a uniqueness theorem for these so called Nica-Toeplitz algebras.
In order to study the Toeplitz algebras related to a Dirac operators in a neighborhood of a closed bounded domain D with smooth boundary in C^n we introduce a singular Cauchy type integral. We compute its principal symbol, thus initiating the index theory.
An approach to the construction of index formulas for elliptic operators on singular manifolds is suggested on the basis of K-theory of algebras and cyclic cohomology. The equivalence of Toeplitz and pseudodifferential quantizations, well known in the case of smooth closed manifolds, is extended to the case of manifolds with conical singularities. We describe a general construction that permits one, for a given Toeplitz quantization of a C^*-algebra, to obtain a new equivalent Toeplitz quantization provided that a resolution of the projection determining the original quantization is given.
In this paper we prove a $K$-homology index theorem for the Toeplitz operators obtained from the multishifts of the Bergman space on several classes of egg-like domains. This generalizes our theorem with Douglas and Yu on the unit ball.
A hypoelliptic operator in the Heisenberg calculus on a compact contact manifold is a Fredholm operator. Its symbol determines an element in the K-theory of the noncommutative algebra of Heisenberg symbols. We construct a periodic cyclic cocycle which, when paired with the Connes-Chern character of the principal Heisenberg symbol, calculates the index. Our index formula is local, i.e. given as a local expression in terms of the principal symbol of the operator and a connection on TM and its curvature. We prove our index formula by reduction to Boutet de Monvel's index theorem for Toeplitz oper…
We study $C^*$-algebras generated by Toeplitz operators acting on the standard weighted Bergman space $\mathcal{A}_λ^2(\mathbb{B}^n)$ over the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^n$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$. The symbols $f_{ac}$ of generating operators are assumed to be of a certain product type. By choosing $a$ and $c$ in different function algebras $\mathcal{S}_a$ and $\mathcal{S}_c$ over lower dimensional unit balls $\mathbb{B}^{\ell}$ and $\mathbb{B}^{n-\ell}$, respectively, and by assuming the invariance of $a\in \mathcal{S}_a$ under some torus action we obtain $C^*$-algebras $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{T}}_λ(\math…
In this paper we prove an invertibility criterion for certain operators which is given as a linear algebraic combination of Toeplitz operators and Fourier multipliers acting on the Hardy space of the unit disc. Very similar to the case of Toeplitz operators we prove that such operators are invertible if and only if they are Fredholm and their Fredholm index is zero. As an application we prove that for "quasi-parabolic" composition operators the spectra and the essential spectra are equal.
We give a uniform construction of the higher indices of elliptic operators associated to Alexander-Spanier cocycles of either parity in terms of a pairing a la Connes between the K-theory and the cyclic cohomology of the algebra of complete symbols of pseudodifferential operators, implemented by means of a relative form of the Chern character in cyclic homology. While the formula for the lowest index of an elliptic operator D on a closed manifold M (which coincides with its Fredholm index) reproduces the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, our formula for the highest index of D (associated to a volum…
We present a new solution to the index problem for hypoelliptic operators in the Heisenberg calculus on contact manifolds, by constructing the appropriate topological K-theory cocycle for such operators. Its Chern character gives a cohomology class to which the Atiyah-Singer index formula can be applied. Such a K-cocycle has already been constructed by Boutet de Monvel for Toeplitz operators, and, more recently, by Melrose and Epstein for the class of Hermite operators. Our construction applies to general hypoelliptic pseudodifferential operators in the Heisenberg calculus. As in the Hermite I…
We extend the Boutet de Monvel Toeplitz index theorem to complex manifold with isolated singularities following the relative $K$-homology theory of Baum, Douglas, and Taylor for manifold with boundary. We apply this index theorem to study the Arveson-Douglas conjecture. Let $\ball^m$ be the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^m$, and $I$ an ideal in the polynomial algebra $\mathbb{C}[z_1, \cdots, z_m]$. We prove that when the zero variety $Z_I$ is a complete intersection space with only isolated singularities and intersects with the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2m-1}$ transversely, the representations of $\m…
This monograph develops the theory of Besov spaces for abelian group actions on semifinite von Neumann algebras and then proves Peller criteria for traceclass properties of associated Hankel operators. This allows to extend known index theorems to symbols lying in Sobolev or Besov spaces. The duality theory for pairings over the smooth Toeplitz extension is developed in detail. Numerous applications to solid state systems are presented. In particular, a bulk-boundary correspondence is obtained for insulators with edges of irrational angles and for chiral semimetals having a pseudogaps. The lat…
We obtain general theorems which enable the calculation of the Dixmier trace in terms of the asymptotics of the zeta function and of the heat operator in a general semi-finite von Neumann algebra. Our results have several applications. We deduce a formula for the Chern character of an odd ${\mathcal L}^{(1,\infty)}$-summable Breuer-Fredholm module in terms of a Hochschild 1-cycle. We explain how to derive a Wodzicki residue for pseudo-differential operators along the orbits of an ergodic $\IR^n$ action on a compact space $X$. Finally we give a short proof an index theorem of Lesch for generali…
