The validity of the Luttinger sum rule is investigated within the prototype tight-binding model of interacting fermions in one dimension, i.e., the t-V model including the next-nearest neighbor hopping t' in order to break the particle-hole symmetry. Scaling analysis of finite-system results at half-filling reveals evident breakdown of the sum rule in the regime of large gap at V >> t, while the sum rule appears to recover together with vanishing of the Mott-Hubbard gap.
An analysis of Luttinger's theorem shows that -- contrary to recent claims -- it is not valid for a generic Mott insulator. For a two-orbital Hubbard model with two electrons per site the crossover from a non-magnetic correlated insulating phase (Mott or Kondo insulator) to a band insulator is investigated. Mott insulating phases are characterized by poles of the self-energy and corresponding zeros in the Greens functions defining a ``Luttinger surface'' which is absent for band insulators. Nevertheless, the ground states of such insulators with two electrons per unit cell are adiabatically co…
Haldane hypothesis about the universality of Luttinger liquid (LL) behavior in conducting one-dimensional (1D) fermion systems is checked numerically for spinless fermion model with next-nearest-neighbor interactions. It is shown that for large enough interactions the ground state can be gapless (metallic) due to frustrations but not be LL. The exponents of correlation functions for this unusual conducting state are found numerically by finite-size method.
Photo-induced metallic states in a Mott insulator are studied for the half-filled, one-dimensional Hubbard model with the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group. An irradiation of strong AC field is found to create a linear dispersion in the optical spectrum (current-current correlation) in the nonequilibrium steady state reminiscent of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid for the doped Mott insulator in equilibrium. The spin spectrum in nonequilibrium retains the des Cloizeaux-Pearson mode with the spin velocity differing from the charge velocity. The mechanism of the photocarrier-dopin…
The Luttinger's theorem has long been taken as the key feature of Landau's Fermi liquid, which signals the presence of quasiparticles. Here, by the unbiased Monte Carlo method, violation of Luttinger's theorem is clearly revealed in the Falicov-Kimball (FK) model, indicating the robust correlation-driven non-Fermi liquid characteristic under any electron density. Introducing hole carriers to the half-filled FK leads to Mott insulator-metal transition, where the Mott quantum criticality manifests unconventional scaling behavior in transport properties. Further insight on the violation of the Lu…
We have developed a fermionic boot-strap method to solve a class of chiral one dimensional fermion model which cannot be tackled by bosonization. Using this scheme, we show that Luttinger liquid behavior in a gas of four interacting chiral Majorana fermions is highly sensitive to the velocity degeneracy. Upon changing the velocity of a one chiral fermion, a sharp bound (or anti-bound) state splits off from the original Luttinger liquid continuum, cutting off the X-ray singularity to form a broad incoherent excitation with a lifetime that grows linearly with frequency.
We investigate the momentum distribution function near the Mott-Hubbard transition in the one-dimensional t1-t2 Hubbard model (the zig-zag Hubbard chain), with the density-matrix renormalization-group technique. We show that for strong interactions the Mott-Hubbard transition occurs between the metallic-phase and an insulating dimerized phase with incommensurate spin excitations, suggesting a decoupling of magnetic and charge excitations not present in weak coupling. We illustrate the signatures for the Mott-Hubbard transition and the commensurate-incommensurate transition in the insulating sp…
We prove that the Mott insulating state is characterized by a divergence of the electron self energy at well-defined values of momenta in the first Brillouin zone. When particle-hole symmetry is present, the divergence obtains at the momenta of the Fermi surface for the corresponding non-interacting system. Such a divergence gives rise to a surface of zeros (the Luttinger surface) of the single-particle Green function and offers a single unifying principle of Mottness from which pseudogap phenomena, spectral weight transfer, and broad spectral features emerge in doped Mott insulators. We also …
We show that a particular class of variational wave functions reproduces the low-energy properties of the Hubbard model in one dimension. Our approach generalizes to finite on-site Coulomb repulsion the fully-projected wave function proposed by Hellberg and Mele [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 67}, 2080 (1991)] for describing the Luttinger-liquid behavior of the doped $t{-}J$ model. Within our approach, the long-range Jastrow factor emerges from a careful minimization of the energy, without assuming any parametric form for the long-distance tail. Specifically, in the conducting phase of the Hubbard mod…
Metallic states coined strange metal (SM), with robust linear-$T$ resistivity, have been widely observed in many quantum materials under strong electron correlation, ranging from high-$T_{c}$ cuprate superconductor, organic superconductor to twisted multilayer graphene and MoTe$_{2}$/WSe$_{2}$ superlattice. Despite decades of intensive studies, the mystery of strange metal still defies any sensible theoretical explanation and has been the key puzzle in modern condensed matter physics. Here, we solve a doped Mott insulator model, which unambiguously exhibits SM phenomena accompanied with quantu…
We study the nonequilibrium steady state of a Mott insulator coupled to a thermostat and driven by a constant electric field, starting from weak fields, until the dielectric breakdown, and beyond. We find that the conventional Zener picture does not describe the steady-state physics. In particular, the current at weak field is found to be controlled by the dissipation. Moreover, in connection with the electric-field-driven dimensional crossover, we find that the dielectric breakdown occurs when the field strength is on the order of the Mott gap of the corresponding lower-dimensional system. We…
We investigate the effect of a next-nearest neighbor hopping integral t' in the 1D t-J model, using Lanczos diagonalization of finite chains. Surprisingly, even moderate values of t' have a quite dramatic effect on the dynamical correlation functions and Fermi surface volume. The `holon' becomes diffuse and overdamped, the band structure near the Fermi energy is dominated by t'. Most importantly, however, with increasing hole concentration the system undergoes a phase transition from a `hole pocket' Fermi surface, where k_F corresponds to the number of holes rather than electrons, to a high do…
Non-linear transport of electrons in strong electric fields, as typified by dielectric breakdown, is re-formulated in terms of the ground-state decay rate originally studied by Schwinger in non-linear QED. We discuss the effect of electron interaction on Zener tunneling by comparing the dielectric breakdown of the band insulator and the Mott insulator, where the latter is studied by the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). The relation with the Berry's phase theory of polarization is also established.
Breakdown of Landau's hypothesis of adiabatic continuation from non-interacting to fully interacting electrons is commonly believed to bring about a violation of Luttinger's theorem. Here, we elucidate what may go wrong in the proof of Luttinger's theorem. The analysis provides a simple way to correct Luttinger's expression of the electron number in single-band models where perturbation theory breaks down through the birth of a Luttinger surface without symmetry breaking. In those cases, we find that the Fermi volume only accounts for the doping away from half-filling. In the hypothetical circ…
Nonlinear response of a Mott insulator to external electric field, corresponding to dielectric breakdown phenomenon, is studied within of a one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model. It is shown that in the limit of nearly spin polarized insulator the decay rate of the ground state into excited holon-doublon pairs can be evaluated numerically as well to high accuracy analytically. Results show that the threshold field depends on the charge gap as $F_{th} \propto Δ^{3/2}$. Numerical results on small systems indicate on the persistence of a similar mechanism for the breakdown for decreasing magn…
We show within the slave boson technique, that the Anderson lattice model exhibits a Kondo breakdown quantum critical point (KB-QCP) where the hybridization goes to zero at zero temper- ature. At this fixed point, the f-electrons experience as well a selective Mott transition separating a local-moment phase from a Kondo-screened phase. The presence of a multi-scale QCP in the An- derson lattice in the absence of magnetism is discussed in the context of heavy fermion compounds. This study is the first evidence for a selective Mott transition in the Anderson lattice.
The Tomonaga--Luttinger parameter $K_ρ$ determines the critical behavior in quasi one-dimensional correlated electron systems, e.g., the exponent $α$ for the density of states near the Fermi energy. We use the numerical density-matrix renormalization group method to calculate $K_ρ$ from the slope of the density-density correlation function in momentum space at zero wave vector. We check the accuracy of our new approach against exact results for the Hubbard and XXZ Heisenberg models. We determine $K_ρ$ in the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model at quarter filling, $n_{\rm c}=1/2$, and c…
In his preprint, arXiv:0711.0952v1, Behnam Farid argues that the Luttinger theorem is valid not only for a metal but also for a Mott insulator if the chemical potential is calculated by taking the limit of vanishing temperature at fixed particle density. In contrast, we have found in our recent paper (Eur. Phys. J. B 59, 495 (2007) or arXiv:cond-mat/0602656) on the basis of a controlled strong coupling expansion that the Luttinger theorem is violated in this limit for a particle-hole asymmetric two-band Mott insulator. In an extensive discussion of our result Farid argues that an arbitrarily w…
Using nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory, we compute the time evolution of the current in a Mott insulator after a strong electric field is turned on. We observe the formation of a quasistationary state in which the current is almost time-independent although the system is constantly excited. At moderately strong fields this state is stable for quite long times. The stationary current exhibits a threshold behavior as a function of the field, in which the threshold increases with the Coulomb interaction and vanishes as the metal-insulator transition is approached.
We study the photoinduced breakdown of a two-orbital Mott insulator and resulting metallic state. Using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, we scrutinize the real-time dynamics of the half-filled two-orbital Hubbard model interacting with a resonant radiation field pulse. The breakdown, caused by production of doublon-holon pairs, is enhanced by Hund's exchange, which dynamically activates large orbital fluctuations. The melting of the Mott insulator is accompanied by a high to low spin transition with a concomitant reduction of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. Most notabl…
Using dynamical mean-field theory and the non-crossing approximation as impurity solver, we study the response of a Mott insulator to strong dc electric fields. The breakdown of the Mott insulating state is triggered by field-induced creation of doublon-hole pairs. In a previous investigation, Ref. [1], it was found that the system approaches a long-lived quasi-steady state in which the current is time-independent although the number of carriers constantly increases. Here we investigate and clarify the nature of this state, which exists only because thermalization is slow in the Hubbard model …
We discuss a scaling theory of the lattice response in the vicinity of a finite-temperature critical end point. The thermal expansivity is shown to be more singular than the specific heat such that the Grüneisen ratio diverges as the critical point is approached, except for its immediate vicinity. More generally, we express the thermal expansivity in terms of a scaling function which we explicitly evaluate for the two-dimensional Ising universality class. Recent thermal expansivity measurements on the layered organic conductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2 X close to the Mott transition are well describe…
Time-dependent nonequilibrium properties of a strongly correlated electron system driven by large electric fields is obtained by means of solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the many-body wave function numerically in one dimension. While the insulator-to-metal transition depends on the electric field and the interaction, the metallization is found to be described in terms of a universal Landau-Zener quantum tunneling among the many-body levels. These processes induces current oscillation for small systems, while give rise to finite resistivity through dissipation for larger sys…
Nonequilibrium states induced by an applied bias voltage (V) and the corresponding current-voltage characteristics of one-dimensional models describing band and Mott insulators are investigated theoretically by using nonequilibrium Green's functions. We attach the models to metallic electrodes whose effects are incorporated into the self-energy. Modulation of the electron density and the scalar potential coming from the additional long-range interaction are calculated self-consistently within the Hartree approximation. For both models of band and Mott insulators with length L_C, the bias volta…
Mott transitions induced by strong electric fields are receiving a growing interest. Recent theoretical proposals have focused on the Zener dielectric breakdown in Mott insulators, however experimental studies are still too scarce to conclude about the mechanism. Here we report a study of the dielectric breakdown in the narrow gap Mott insulators GaTa$_4$Se$_{8-x}$Te$_x$. We find that the I-V characteristics and the magnitude of the threshold electric field (E$_{th}$) do not correspond to a Zener breakdown, but rather to an avalanche breakdown. E$_{th}$ increases as a power law of the Mott Hub…
Magnetization curves of the ferrimagnetic mixed spin-(1/2,S) Heisenberg chains are calculated with the help of density-matrix renormalization group method for several quantum spin numbers S=1, 3/2, 2 and 5/2. It is shown that the ferrimagnetic mixed spin-(1/2,S) Heisenberg chains exhibit irrespective of the spin value S exactly one intermediate magnetization plateau, which can be identified with the gapped Lieb-Mattis ferrimagnetic ground state. The magnetization plateau due to the Lieb-Mattis ferrimagnetism breaks down at a quantum phase transition towards the Luttinger spin liquid, which is …
We construct and apply an exchange-correlation functional for the one-dimensional Hubbard model. This functional has built into it the Luttinger-liquid and Mott-insulator correlations, present in the Hubbard model, in the same way in which the usual {\it ab initio} local-density approximation (LDA) has built into it the Fermi-liquid correlations present in the electron gas. An accurate expression for the exchange-correlation energy of the homogeneous Hubbard model, based on the Bethe Ansatz (BA), is given and the resulting LDA functional is applied to a variety of inhomogeneous Hubbard models.…
We study the thermoelectric effect of two-dimensional metals on a square lattice within semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory with particular focus on electron-electron scattering. We compute the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient as a function of band filling and temperature for generically chosen hopping parameters in a two-dimensional tight-binding model. The Boltzmann equation is solved numerically after computing the full collision integral, taking the angular and radial degrees of freedom into account. These degrees of freedom of the collision integral, neglected in t…
Screening in one-dimensional metals is studied for arbitrary electron-electron interactions. It is shown that for finite-range interactions (Luttinger liquid) electroneutrality is violated. This apparent inconsistency can be traced to the presence of external screening gates responsible for the effectively short-ranged Coulomb interactions. We also draw attention to the breakdown of linear screening for wavevectors close to 2 K_f.
We investigate a system of one dimensional Hubbard chains of interacting fermions coupled by inter-chain hopping. Using a generalization of the Dynamical Mean Field Theory we study the deconfinement transition from a Mott insulator to a metal and the crossover between Luttinger and Fermi liquid phases. One-particle properties, local spin response and inter-chain optical conductivity are calculated. Possible applications to organic conductors are discussed.
We study the breakdown of a Mott insulator with the thermodynamic imbalance induced by an applied bias voltage. By analyzing the instabilities of the magnetic susceptibility, we describe a rich non-equilibrium phase diagram, obtained for different applied voltages, that exhibits phases with a spatially patterned charge gap. For a finite voltage, smaller than the value of the equilibrium Mott gap, the formation of patterns coincides with the emergence of mid-gap states contributing to a finite steady-state conductance. We discuss the experimental implications of this new scenario of Mott breakd…
The paramagnetic phase of the one-band Hubbard model is studied at zero-temperature, within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory, and for general particle-hole asymmetry where a doping-induced Mott transition occurs. Our primary focus is the Mott insulator (MI) phase, and our main aim to establish what can be shown exactly about it. To handle the locally doubly-degenerate MI requires two distinct self-energies, which reflect the broken symmetry nature of the phase and together determine the standard single self-energy. Exact results are obtained for the local charge, local magnetic mom…
We study the problem of one-dimensional (1D) Luttinger liquids in the insulating Mott-Hubbard phase in the presence of acoustic phonons in the semiclassical limit. We show that solitonic excitations can propagate freely in the system and the energy required to produce a soliton is reduced by a polaronic effect. We find a critical value of the electron-phonon coupling constant for which this energy vanishes.
We calculate the non-equilibrium electronic transport properties of a one-dimensional interacting chain at half filling, coupled to non-interacting leads. The interacting chain is initially in a Mott insulator state that is driven out of equilibrium by applying a strong bias voltage between the leads. For bias voltages above a certain threshold we observe the breakdown of the Mott insulator state and the establishment of a steady-state electronic current through the system. Based on extensive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group simulations, we show that this steady-state curren…
We show that doped Mott insulators, such as the copper-oxide superconductors, are asymptotically slaved in that the quasiparticle weight, $Z$, near half-filling depends critically on the existence of the high energy scale set by the upper Hubbard band. In particular, near half filling, the following dichotomy arises: $Z\ne 0$ when the high energy scale is integrated out but Z=0 in the thermodynamic limit when it is retained. Slavery to the high energy scale arises from quantum interference between electronic excitations across the Mott gap. Broad spectral features seen in photoemission in the …
The nonadiabatic quantum tunneling picture, which may be called the many-body Schwinger-Landau-Zener mechanism, for the dielectric breakdown of Mott insulators in strong electric fields is studied in the one-dimensional Hubbard model. The tunneling probability is calculated by a metod due to Dykhne-Davis-Pechukas with an analytical continuation of the Bethe-ansatz solution for excited states to a non-Hermitian case. A remarkable agreement with the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group result is obtained.
We show that spin-orbit coupling (SOC) plays Janus-faced roles on the orbitally-selective Mott transitions in a three-orbital Hubbard model with crystal field splitting at a specific filling of $2/3$, which is a minimal Hamiltonian for ruthenates. While the SOC favors metallic state due to enhancement of orbital hybridization at smaller on-site Coulomb repulsions, it stabilizes the Mott insulating state ascribed to lifting of orbital degeneracies and enhancement of band polarizations at larger electronic interaction. Moreover, an orbitally-selective non-Fermi liquid (OSnFL), where breakdown an…
We consider the two-terminal conductance of a one-dimensional Mott insulator undergoing the commensurate-incommensurate quantum phase transition to a conducting state. We treat the leads as Luttinger liquids. At a specific value of compressibility of the leads, corresponding to the Luther-Emery point, the conductance can be described in terms of the free propagation of non-interacting fermions with charge e/\sqrt{2}. At that point, the temperature dependence of the conductance across the quantum phase transition is described by a Fermi function. The deviation from the Luther-Emery point in the…
We show that doped Mott insulators exhibit a collective degree of freedom, not made out of the elemental excitations, because the number of single-particle addition states at low energy per electron per spin is greater than one. The presence of such a collective degree of freedom which is not a consequence of proximity to a phase transition is a consequence of dynamical spectral weight transfer from high to low energies. This physics is captured by the charge $2e$ boson that emerges by explicitly integrating out the high-energy scale in the Hubbard model. The charge $2e$ boson binds to a hole,…
The transition voltage of an abrupt metal-insulator transition (MIT), observed by applying an electric field to two-terminal devices fabricated on a Mott insulator VO_2 film, decreases with increasing temperature up to 334K. The abrupt current jump disappears above 334 K near the MIT temperature. These results suggest that the mechanism of the abrupt MIT induced by temperature is the same as that by an electric field. The magnitude of the current jump (a large current) decreases with increasing external resistance; this is an important observation in terms of applying the abrupt MIT to device …
We introduce a Cellular Dynamical Cluster Approximation (CDCA) to study the nature of the Mott insulator-metal transition in the extended Hubbard model on a square lattice. At strong coupling, a d-wave Mott insulator is obtained. Hole doping drives a first order Mott transition to a non-Fermi (nFL) liquid metal. Remarkably, this nFL is caused by an Anderson orthogonality catastrophe at low energies due to the non-trivial competition between strong, non-local interactions and hopping. This constitutes the first explicit realisation of Anderson's Luttinger liquid idea in two dimensions. Many exp…
We present an extensive numerical study of the Hubbard model on the doped AB$_2$ chain, both in the weak coupling and the infinite-U limit. Due to the special unit cell topology, this system displays a rich variety of phases as function of hole doping ($δ$) away from half-filling. Near half-filling, spiral states develop in the weak coupling regime, while Nagaoka itinerant ferromagnetism is observed in the infinite-U limit. For higher doping the system phase-separates before reaching a Mott insulating phase of short-range RVB states at $δ=1/3$. Moreover, for $δ>1/3$ we observe a crossover, whi…
One dimensional free-fermions and hard-core bosons are often considered to be equivalent. Indeed, when restricted to nearest-neighbor hopping on a chain the particles cannot exchange themselves, and therefore hardly experience their own statistics. Apart from the off-diagonal correlations which depends on the so-called Jordan-Wigner string, real-space observables are similar for free-fermions and hard-core bosons on a chain. Interestingly, by coupling only two chains, thus forming a two-leg ladder, particle exchange becomes allowed, and leads to a totally different physics between free-fermion…
In this work, we explore the possibility of emergent nonequilibrium steady states arising from the electric-field-driven Mott insulator via the Keldysh-Floquet dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), which can determine the fully-interacting, nonequilibrium steady-state Green's functions with the noninteracting counterparts as an input to the DMFT self-consistency loop. Unlike the retarded component, obtaining the lesser Green's function for the noninteracting system presents an important obstacle since the thermalization of the noninteracting system still requires a precise understanding of the d…
The frequency-moment expansion method is developed to analyze the validity of the Luttinger sum rule within the Mott-Hubbard insulator, as represented by the generalized Hubbard model at half filling and large $U$. For the particular case of the Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor hopping on a triangular lattice lacking the particle-hole symmetry results reveal substantial violation of the sum rule.
Transition metal oxides such as vanadium dioxide (VO$_2$), niobium dioxide (NbO$_2$), and titanium sesquioxide (Ti$_2$O$_3$) are known to undergo a temperature-dependent metal-insulator transition (MIT) in conjunction with a structural transition within their bulk. However, it is not typically discussed how breaking crystal symmetry via surface termination affects the complicated MIT physics. Using synchrotron-based x-ray spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction (LEED), low energy electron microscopy (LEEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and several other experimental techniques…
We study theoretically the quantum phase transition from a metal to a Wigner-Mott insulator at fractional commensurate filling on a two-leg ladder. We show that a continuous transition out of a symmetry-preserving Luttinger liquid metal is possible where the onset of insulating behavior is accompanied by the breaking of the lattice translation symmetry. At fillings $ν= 1/m$ per spin per unit cell, we find that the spin degrees of freedom also acquire a gap at the Wigner-Mott transition for odd integer $m$. In contrast for even integer $m$, the spin sector remains gapless and the resulting insu…
Because Fermi liquids are inherently non-interacting states of matter, all electronic levels below the chemical potential are doubly occupied. Consequently, the simplest way of breaking Fermi liquid theory is to engineer a model in which some of those states are singly occupied keeping time-reversal invariance intact. We show that breaking an overlooked local-in-momentum space $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry of a Fermi liquid does precisely this. As a result, while the Mott transition from a Fermi liquid is correctly believed to obtain without the breaking of any continuous symmetry, a discrete symmetr…
The underlying Fermi surface is a key concept for strongly-interacting electron models and has been introduced to generalize the usual notion of the Fermi surface to generic (superconducting or insulating) systems. By using improved correlated wave functions that contain backflow and Jastrow terms, we examine the two-dimensional $t{-}t^\prime$ Hubbard model and find a non-trivial renormalization of the topology of the underlying Fermi surface close to the Mott insulator. Moreover, we observe a sharp crossover region, which arises from the metal-insulator transition, from a weakly interacting m…
Using the first-order series expansion of the function G(k;mu), in powers of mu' = mu - U/2, pertaining to the insulating ground state of a single-band Hubbard Hamiltonian at half-filling, Kokalj and Prelovsek have in a recent paper [Eur. Phys. J. B 63, 431 (2008), arXiv:arXiv:0709.0263] reported breakdown of the Luttinger theorem for the specific case where the lattice on which the Hubbard Hamiltonian is defined is a two-dimensional triangular lattice, for which the ground state is not invariant under particle-hole transformation. Here G(k;mu) is the single-particle Green function G(k;e) eval…
We reply to the Comment by Achim Rosch [1] (arXiv:0711.3093v1) who challenges our finding in Ref. [2] (arXiv:0711.0952v1) with regard to the validity of the Luttinger theorem in the cases of Mott insulating N-particle ground states (even) when the chemical potential used in applying this theorem coincides with the zero-temperature limit of the chemical potential satisfying the equation of state corresponding to N particles. Rosch further argues that the strong-coupling expression for the single-particle Green function presented in Ref. [3] (arXiv:cond-mat/0602656v2) and analyzed in Ref. [2] do…
We reinvestigate the pressure dependence of the crystal structure and antiferromagnetic phase transition in MnTe$_2$ by the rigorous and reliable tool of high pressure neutron powder diffraction. First-principles density functional theory calculations are carried out in order to gain microscopic insight. The measured Néel temperature of MnTe$_2$ is found to show unusually large pressure dependence of $12$ K GPa$^{-1}$. This gives rise to large violation of Bloch's rule given by $α=\frac{d\log T_N}{d\log V}=-\frac{10}{3} \approx -3.3$, to a $α$ value of -6.0 $\pm$ 0.1 for MnTe$_2$. The ab-initi…
