We present GALEX UV observations of a sample of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies for which HI data are available, allowing us to estimate their star formation efficiency. We find that the UV light extends to larger radii than the optical light (some galaxies, but not all, look similar to the recently discovered XUV-disk galaxies). Using a standard calibration to convert the UV light into star formation rates, we obtain lower star formation efficiencies in LSB galaxies than in high surface brightness galaxies by about one order of magnitude.
We show however that standard calibrations may not apply to these galaxies, as the FUV-NUV color obtained from the two GALEX bands (FUV and NUV; lambda_eff= 1516 and 2267 A, respectively) is redder than expected for star forming galaxies. This color can be interpreted as a result of internal extinction, modified Initial Mass Function or by star formation histories characterized by bursts followed by quiescent phases. Our analysis favors this latter hypothesis.
M32, the compact elliptical-galaxy companion to the Andromeda spiral galaxy has been imaged by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) in two ultraviolet bands, centered at ~1500 (FUV) and 2300 Angstroms (NUV). The imaging data have been carefully decomposed so as to properly account for the complicated background contamination from the disk of M31. We have derived the surface brightness and color profiles finding a slightly positive color gradient of Delta(FUV-B)/Delta log(r)=+0.15+/-0.03 within one effective radius. Earlier data from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope suggested that M32 had an …
We present measurements of the FUV (1530A) and NUV (2310A) galaxy luminosity functions (LF) at low redshift (z<0.2) from GALEX observations matched to the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. We split our FUV and NUV samples into two UV-bj color bins and two redshift bins. As observed at optical wavelengths, the local LF of the bluest galaxies tend to have steeper faint end slopes and fainter characteristic magnitudes M* than the reddest subsamples. We find evidence for color dependent evolution at very low redshift in both bands, with bright blue galaxies becoming dominant in the highest redshift bin.…
We use GALEX/optical photometry to construct color-color relationships for early-type galaxies sorted by morphological type. We have matched objects in the GALEX GR1 public release and the first IR1.1 internal release, with the RC3 early-type galaxies having a morphological type -5.5<T<-1.5 with mean error in T<1.5, and mean error on (B-V)T<0.05. After visual inspection of each match, we are left with 130 galaxies with a reliable GALEX pipeline photometry in the far-UV and near-UV bands. This sample is divided into Ellipticals (-5.5<T<-3.5) and Lenticulars (-3.5<T<-1.5). After correction for t…
We discuss the UV, optical, and IR properties of the SDSS sources detected by GALEX as part of its All-sky Imaging Survey Early Release Observations. Virtually all of the GALEX sources in the overlap region are detected by SDSS. GALEX sources represent ~2.5% of all SDSS sources within these fields and about half are optically unresolved. Most unresolved GALEX/SDSS sources are bright blue turn-off thick disk stars and are typically detected only in the GALEX near-UV band. The remaining unresolved sources include low-redshift quasars, white dwarfs, and white dwarf/M dwarf pairs, and these domina…
We combine data from SDSS and the GALEX and Spitzer observatories to create a sample of galaxies observed homogeneously from the UV to the Far-IR. This sample, consisting of ~460 galaxies observed spectroscopically by SDSS provides a multiwavelength (0.15-24 micron) view of obscured and unobscured star formation in nearby (z<0.3) galaxies with SFRs ranging from 0.01 to 100 M_solar/yr. We calculate a robust dust measure from the infrared to UV ratio (IRX) and explore the influence of star formation history (SFH) on the dust-UV color relation (i.e. the IRX-beta relation). We find that the UV col…
We present images, integrated photometry, surface-brightness and color profiles for a total of 1034 nearby galaxies recently observed by the GALEX satellite in its far-ultraviolet (FUV; 1516A) and near-ultraviolet (NUV; 2267A) bands. (...) This data set has been complemented with archival optical, near-infrared, and far-infrared fluxes and colors. We find that the integrated (FUV-K) color provides robust discrimination between elliptical and spiral/irregular galaxies and also among spiral galaxies of different sub-types. Elliptical galaxies with brighter K-band luminosities (i.e. more massive)…
We have cross-correlated the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ) white dwarf catalog with the GALEX 2nd Data Release and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 5 to obtain ultraviolet photometry (FUV, NUV) for approximately 700 objects and optical photometry (ugriz) for approximately 800 objects. We have compared the optical-ultraviolet colors to synthetic white dwarf colors to obtain temperature estimates for approximately 250 of these objects. These white dwarfs have effective temperatures ranging from 10 000 K (cooling age of about 1Gyr) up to about 40 000 K (cooling age of about 3 Myrs…
We present color-magnitude diagrams of the open cluster NGC 2420, obtained from Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) ultraviolet images in FUV and NUV bands and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) u,g,r,i,z photometry. Our goal is to search for and characterize hot evolved stars and peculiar objects in this open cluster, as part of a larger project aimed to study a number of open clusters in the Milky Way with GALEX and ground-based data.
We have used the GALEX UV photometric data to construct a first near-ultraviolet (NUV) color-magnitude relation (CMR) for the galaxies pre-classified as early-type by SDSS studies. The NUV CMR is a powerful tool for tracking the recent star formation history in early-type galaxies, owing to its high sensitivity to the presence of young stellar populations. Our NUV CMR for UV-weak galaxies shows a well-defined slope and thus will be useful for interpreting the restframe NUV data of distant galaxies and studying their star formation history. Compared to optical CMRs, the NUV CMR shows a substant…
The ESO-Spitzer extragalactic Imaging Survey (ESIS) is the optical follow up of the Spitzer Wide-Area InfraRed Extragalactic (SWIRE) survey in the ELAIS-S1 area. This paper presents B, V, R Wide Field Imager observations of the first 1.5 square degree of the ESIS survey. Data reduction is described including astrometric calibration, illumination and color corrections, completeness and photometric accuracy estimates. Number counts and color distributions are compared to literature observational and theoretical data, including non-evolutionary, PLE, evolutionary and semi-analytic Lambda-CDM gala…
Halo samples that have no kinematic bias have been successfully isolated by photometric observations. We show that the near-UV (NUV) magnitude of the GALEX All-Sky Survey can be used, together with Johnson BV magnitudes in a (NUV-V)_0 vs. (B-V)_0 plot, to distinguish blue horizontal branch (BHB) from other A stars of the same B-V color for 12<V<18. In addition, we use SDSS gr magnitudes in a (NUV - r)_0 vs. (g-r)_0 plot for 14<r<18. The faint limit will be extended by ~3 magnitudes for the GALEX Medium-Deep Survey. Attempts to use NUV in conjunction with 2MASS magnitudes and ROTSE m_r magnitud…
We present ultraviolet photometry for a sample of morphologically early-type galaxies selected by matching the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 1 with the GALEX Medium and All-sky Imaging Surveys. We obtain a working sample of 1032 early-type galaxies with GALEX FUV detections, SDSS spectroscopy, and $z<0.2$. Using the SDSS spectra to identify galaxies with even weak star formation or evidence of AGN, and further removing galaxies with any evidence of non early-type morphology, we derive a final sample of 172 red quiescent early-type galaxies. We find that the $FUV-r$ color has a full ran…
The GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) Nearby Galaxies Survey is providing deep far-UV and near-UV imaging for a representative sample of galaxies in the local universe. We present early results for M51 and M101, from GALEX UV imaging and SDSS optical data in five bands. The multi-band photometry of compact stellar complexes in M101 is compared to population synthesis models, to derive ages, reddening, reddening-corrected luminosities and current/initial masses. The GALEX UV photometry provides a complete census of young compact complexes on a approximately 160pc scale. A galactocentric gradien…
We derive a variety of physical parameters including star formation rates (SFRs), dust attenuation and burst mass fractions for 6472 galaxies observed by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and present in the SDSS DR1 main spectroscopic sample. Parameters are estimated in a statistical way by comparing each observed broad-band SED (two GALEX and five SDSS bands) with an extensive library of model galaxy SEDs, which cover a wide range of star formation histories and include stochastic starbursts. We compare the constraints derived using SDSS bands only with those derived using the combination…
The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite has obtained high time resolution ultraviolet photometry during a large flare on the M4 dwarf star GJ 3685A. Simultaneous NUV (1750 - 2800A) and FUV (1350 - 1750A) time-tagged photometry with time resolution better than 0.1 s shows that the overall brightness in the FUV band increased by a factor of 1000 in 200 s. Under the assumption that the NUV emission is mostly due to a stellar continuum, and that the FUV flux is shared equally between emission lines and continuum, then there is evidence for two distinct flare components for this event. The …
The first large sample of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z~1 is selected from GALEX Far-UV and Near-UV images of the Chandra Deep Field South. This multi-wavelength study is based on the wealth of data available in this field: SPITZER-MIPS to estimate total IR luminosities and dust attenuations, redshifts from COMBO-17, EIS and GOODS to check the validity of dropout identifications and GOODS to derive the morphology of about 40 of our LBGs. The advantages of this "nearby" LBG sample are that images reach fainter fluxes and surface brightnesses, allowing a deeper detection at all wavelengths an…
We report on the properties of a sample of ultraviolet luminous galaxies (UVLGs) selected by matching the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Surveys with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Third Data Release. Out of 25362 galaxies between 0.0<z<0.3 detected by GALEX, there are 215 galaxies with L>2x10^10 L_solar at 1530 Angstroms (observed wavelength). The properties of this population are well correlated with ultraviolet surface brightness. We find that the galaxies with low UV surface brightness are primarily large spiral systems with a mixture of old and young stellar populations, while the high s…
We discuss the panchromatic properties of 99,088 galaxies selected from the SDSS Data Release 1 spectroscopic sample (a flux-limited sample for 1360 deg^2). These galaxies are positionally matched to sources detected by ROSAT, GALEX, 2MASS, IRAS, GB6, FIRST, NVSS and WENSS. We find strong correlations between the detection fraction at other wavelengths and optical properties such as flux, colors, and emission-line strengths. Using GALEX, SDSS, and 2MASS data, we construct the UV-IR broad-band spectral energy distributions for various types of galaxies, and find that they form a nearly one-para…
We report results from a pilot program to obtain spectroscopy for objects detected in the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Medium Imaging Survey (MIS). Our study examines the properties of galaxies detected by GALEX fainter than the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic survey. This is the first study to extend the techinques of Salim et al. 2005 to estimate stellar masses, star formation rates (SFR) and the b (star formation history) parameter for star-forming galaxies out to z~0.7. We obtain redshifts for 50 GALEX MIS sources reaching NUV=23.9 (AB mag), having counterparts in the SD…
Recent surveys have discovered hundreds of low surface brightness galaxies, systems with central surface brightness fainter than 22.0 B mag arcsec^-2, in the local universe. Plots of the surface brightness distribution - that is, the space density of galaxies plotted against central surface brightness - show a flat space density distribution from the canonical Freeman value of 21.65 through the current observational limit of 25.0 B mag arcsec^-2. It is therefore extremely important to understand these diffuse systems if we wish to understand galaxy formation and evolution as a whole. This talk…
We present new results from deep GALEX UV imaging of the cluster Cl 0024+17 at z~0.4. Rest-frame far UV emission is detected from a large fraction of so-called ``passive spiral galaxies'' -a significant population which exhibits spiral morphology with little or no spectroscopic evidence for ongoing star formation. This population is thought to represent infalling galaxies whose star formation has been somehow truncated by environmental processes, possibly in morphological transition to S0 galaxies. Compared to normal cluster spirals, we find that passive spirals are redder in FUV-optical color…
This paper contains the list of Hipparcos eclipsing binaries that fulfill the following conditions: the star is classified in the Hipparcos Catalogue as EA-type eclipsing binary and its parallax is either larger than 5 mas or it is five times larger than its mean error. An eclipsing binary with known distance and with photometric and double-line spectroscopic orbits determined can be used in the process of calibrating the relation between the stellar surface brightness and the color that is crucial for the method of the distance determination by means of eclipsing binaries. This list is being …
We present the effects due to alpha-element enhancement on surface brightness fluctuation magnitudes and broad-band colors in order to investigate the calibration zero-point. We study these effects at ages covering 0.1 to 13 Gyr and metallicities of Z=0.0003 to 0.04 using the Teramo group's isochrones, BaSTI. Our preliminary results indicate that alpha-enhanced models are needed to match massive red galaxies while solar-scaled models are fine for dwarf blue galaxies to reproduce their independently estimated ages and metallicities.
We present a study of the morphological nature of redshift z~0.7 star-forming galaxies using a combination of HST/ACS, GALEX and ground-based images of the COSMOS field. Our sample consists of 8,146 galaxies, 5,777 of which are detected in the GALEX near-ultraviolet band down to a limiting magnitude of 25.5 (AB). We make use of the UV to estimate star formation rates, correcting for the effect of dust using the UV-slope, and compute, from the ACS F814W images, the C,A,S,G,M20 morphological parameters for all objects in our sample. We observe a morphological bimodality in the galaxy population …
We study surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) in a sample of 8 elliptical galaxies using Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Wide Field Channel (WFC) data drawn from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archive. SBF magnitudes in the F814W bandpass, and galaxy colors from F814W, F435W, and F606W images -- when available -- are presented. Galaxy surface brightness profiles are determined as well. We present the first SBF--broadband color calibration for the ACS/WFC F814W bandpass, and (relative) distance moduli estimates for 7 of our galaxies. We detect and study in detail the SBF variations within …
Photometry of the Q2237+0305gravitational lens in VRI spectral bands with the 1.5-m telescope of the high-altitude Maidanak observatory in 1995-2000 is presented. Monitoring of Q2237+0305 in July-October 2000, made at nearly daily basis, did not reveal rapid (night-to-night and intranight) variations of brightness of the components during this time period. Rather slow changes of magnitudes of the components were observed, such as 0.08 mag fading of B and C components and 0.05 mag brightening of D in R band during July 23 - October 7, 2000. By good luck three nights in 1999 were almost at the t…
We describe photometry at mid-infrared passbands (1.2 - 24 microns) for a sample of 18 elliptical galaxies. All surface brightness distributions resemble de Vaucouleurs profiles, indicating that most of the emission arises from the photospheres or circumstellar regions of red giant stars. The spectral energy distribution peaks near 1.6 microns, but the half-light or effective radius has a pronounced minimum near the K band (2.15 microns). Apart from the 24 micron passband, all sample-averaged radial color profiles have measurable slopes within about twice the (K band) effective radius. Evident…
Surface brightness data can distinguish between a Friedman-Robertson-Walker expanding universe and a non-expanding universe. For surface brightness measured in AB magnitudes per angular area, all FRW models, regardless of cosmological parameters, predict that surface brightness declines with redshift as (z+1)^-3, while any non-expanding model predicts that surface brightness is constant with distance and thus with z. High-z UV surface brightness data for galaxies from the Hubble Ultra Deep Field and low-z data from GALEX are used to test the predictions of these two models up to z=6. A prelimi…
We present B, R, and Halpha imaging data of 19 large disk galaxies whose properties are intermediate between classical low surface brightness galaxies and ordinary high surface brightness galaxies. We use data taken from the Lowell 1.8m Perkins telescope to determine the galaxies' overall morphology, color, and star formation properties. Morphologically, the galaxies range from Sb through Irr and include galaxies with and without nuclear bars. The colors of the galaxies vary from B-R = 0.3 - 1.9, and most show at least a slight bluing of the colors with increasing radius. The Halpha images of …
We fit elliptical isophotes to the Hubble Deep Field-North WFPC-2 and NICMOS data to study the rest-frame UV_{218}-U_{300} color profiles and rest-frame B surface brightness profiles of 33 intermediate redshift galaxies (0.5 <= z <= 1.2) with I_{814} < 25 and 50 high redshift galaxies (2.0 <= z <= 3.5) with H_{160}< 27. From the weighted least-squares fit to the color profiles we find that, at intermediate redshifts, the galaxies possess negative color gradients indicating a reddening towards the center of the profile similar to local samples whereas, at high redshifts, the galaxies possess po…
With this study we aim at the spectroscopic verification of a photometrically selected sample of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxy candidates in a field around the Hubble Deep Field-South (HDF-S). The sample helps to extend the parameter space for LSB galaxies to lower central surface brightnesses and to provide better estimates on the volume densities of these objects. To derive redshifts for the LSB candidates, long-slit spectra were obtained covering a spectral range from 3400Å to 7500Å. The observations have been obtained using the ESO 3.6m telescope, equipped with the EFOSC2 spectrograp…
We report a mid-infrared color and surface brightness analysis of IC 10, NGC 1313, and NGC 6946, three of the nearby galaxies studied under the Infrared Space Observatory Key Project on Normal Galaxies. Images with < 9 arcsecond (170 pc) resolution of these nearly face-on, late-type galaxies were obtained using the LW2 (6.75 mu) and LW3 (15 mu) ISOCAM filters. Though their global I_nu(6.75 mu)/I_nu(15 mu) flux ratios are similar and typical of normal galaxies, they show distinct trends of this color ratio with mid-infrared surface brightness. We find that I_nu(6.75 mu)/I_nu(15 mu) ~< 1 only oc…
The ELAIS S1 field was observed by GALEX in both its Wide Spectroscopic and Deep Imaging Survey modes. This field was previously observed by the Infrared Space Observatory and we made use of the catalogue of multi-wavelength data published by the ELAIS consortium to select galaxies common to the two samples. Among the 959 objects with GALEX spectroscopy, 88 are present in the ELAIS catalog and 19 are galaxies with an optical spectroscopic redshift. The distribution of redshifts covers the range $0<z<1.6$. The selected galaxies have bolometric IR luminosities $10<Log(L_{IR})<13$ (deduced from t…
We present the properties of a large sample (12,282) of nearly face-on low surface brightness (LSB) disk galaxies selected from the main galaxy sample of SDSS-DR4. These properties include B-band central surface brightness mu_0(B), scale lengths h, integrated magnitudes, colors, and distances D. This sample has mu_0(B) values from 22 to 24.5 mag arcsec^{-2} with a median value of 22.42 mag arcsec^{-2}, and disk scale lengths ranging from 2 to 19 kpc. They are quite bright with M_B taking values from -18 to -23 mag with a median value of -20.08 mag. There exist clear correlations between logh a…
The optical properties of a number of supercompact ultraviolet luminous galaxies (UVLG), recently discovered in the local Universe matching GALEX and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data, are discussed. Detailed re-analysis of the SDSS data for these and other similar but nearer galaxies shows that their surface brightness radial profile in both R and u bands is in most cases well described by an extended disk plus a central unresolved component (possibly a bulge). Since the SDSS pipeline used a single disk component to derive the half light radius of these UVLGs their size was severely undere…
We reconsider the problem of the age of the stellar discs of late-type Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies by making use of a new IMF recently derived from numerical fluid dynamical simulations (Padoan, Nordlund and Jones, 1997). While a Miller-Scalo IMF cannot adequately describe the photometric properties of LSBs, when we apply the new Padoan et al. (1997) IMF to a simple exponential disc model with parameters appropriate to LSBs, we get excellent fits of the colors and color gradients. We then conclude that: a) The star formation history of LSB disc galaxies can be described by an initial…
We present UBVI surface photometry of a sample of low surface brightness (LSB) disk galaxies. LSB disk galaxies are fairly well described as exponential disks with no preferred value for either scale length, central surface brightness, or rotational velocity. Indeed, the distribution of scale lengths is indistinguishable from that of high surface brightness spirals, indicating that dynamically similar galaxies (e.g., those with comparable Rv^2) exist over a large range in surface density. These LSB galaxies are strikingly blue. The complete lack of correlation between central surface brightnes…
We derive Surface Brightness Fluctuations (SBF) and integrated magnitudes in the V- and I-bands using Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) archival data. The sample includes 14 galaxies covering a wide range of physical properties: morphology, total absolute magnitude, integrated color. We take advantage of the latter characteristic of the sample to check existing empirical calibrations of absolute SBF magnitudes both in the I- and V-passbands. Additionally, by comparing our SBF and color data with the Teramo-SPoT simple stellar population models, and other recent sets of population synthesis mod…
We compare the observed correlations between the maximum brightness, postmaximum decline rate and color at maximum light of Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) with model predictions. The observations are based on a total of 40 SN Ia with 29 SN of the Calan Tololo Supernova Search and 11 local SN which cover a range of 2 mag in the absolute visual brightness. The observed correlations are not tight, one dimensional relations. Supernovae with the same postmaximum decline or the same color have a spread in visual magnitude of about 0.7 mag. The dispersion in the color-magnitude relation may result from u…
It is an observational fact that bulges of spiral galaxies contain a high fraction of old and metal-rich stars. Following this observational fact, we have investigated colors of 21 bulges hosted by a selected sample of high surface brightness spirals and low surface brightness galaxies observed in B and R optical bands and in J and Ks near-IR bands. Using structural parameters derived from these observations we obtain evidence that bulges could be formed by pure disk evolution (secular evolution), in agreement with the suggestion by some authors. The color profiles, especially the near-IR ones…
We present near-Infrared images of low surface brightness galaxies: H band images of UGC 6614 and F568-6 (Malin 2). The H band images show spiral structure so we are confident that we are seeing the galaxy disks as well as the central bulges. The optical-IR colors of these galaxies, $R-H = 2.2\pm 0.2$, $B-H = 3.5-4.2$, are extremely red and are similar to those of many S0 and elliptical galaxies. This represents strong evidence for a component of old stars. Recent studies find that low surface brightness galaxies span a wide range of morphologies and colors. In this context UGC 6614 and F568-6…
We use a combination of three-dimensional Monte Carlo radiative transfer techniques and multi-wavelength (BRHK,H alpha) imaging data to investigate the nature of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the edge-on, low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy UGC7321. Using realistic models that incorporate multiple scattering effects and clumping of the stars and the interstellar material, we explore the distribution and opacity of the interstellar material (gas+dust), and its effects on the observed stellar disk luminosity profiles, color gradients, and rotation curve shape. We find that UGC7321 contains a …
We apply machine learning in the form of a nearest neighbor instance-based algorithm (NN) to generate full photometric redshift probability density functions (PDFs) for objects in the Fifth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR5). We use a conceptually simple but novel application of NN to generate the PDFs - perturbing the object colors by their measurement error - and using the resulting instances of nearest neighbor distributions to generate numerous individual redshifts. When the redshifts are compared to existing SDSS spectroscopic data, we find that the mean value of each…
Using Monte Carlo radiative transfer techniques, we model the dust content of the edge-on low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy UGC 7321 and explore the effects of dust on its disk color gradients. Dust alone cannot explain the large radial disk color gradients observed in this galaxy and we find that a significant fraction (~50%) of the dust in UGC 7321 appears to be contained in a clumped medium, indicating that at least some LSB galaxies can support a modest multi-phase ISM structure. In addition, we report some of the first direct detections of molecular gas (CO) in LSB galaxies.
(Abridged) Far ultraviolet to far infrared images of the nearby galaxy NGC5194, from Spitzer, GALEX, Hubble Space Telescope and ground--based data, are used to investigate local and global star formation, and the impact of dust extinction in HII-emitting knots. In the IR/UV-UV color plane, the NGC5194 HII knots show the same trend observed for normal star-forming galaxies, having a much larger dispersion than starburst galaxies. We identify the dispersion as due to the UV emission predominantly tracing the evolved, non-ionizing stellar population, up to ages 50-100 Myr. While in starbursts the…
We examine the relationship between environment and the luminosities, surface brightnesses, colors, and profile shapes of luminous galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). For the SDSS sample, galaxy color is the galaxy property most predictive of the local environment. Galaxy color and luminosity jointly comprise the most predictive pair of properties. At fixed luminosity and color, density is not closely related to surface brightness or to Sersic index -- the parameter in this study that astronomers most often associate with morphology. In the text, we discuss what measureable residu…
This study reports on photometric results of a search for LSB galaxies in a 0.76deg^2 field centered on the HDF-S. We present results from photometric analysis of the derived sample galaxies and compare number densities to results of former surveys. We used public data from the NOAO Deep Wide-Field survey and the multi-wavelength Goddard Space Flight Center survey. The former reaches a limiting surface brightness of mu_BW~29 magarcsec^-2 and is therefore one of the most sensitive ground based data sets systematically analyzed for LSB galaxies. To reduce the contamination by High Surface Bright…
We report HST/NICMOS coronagraphic images of the HD 15115 circumstellar disk at 1.1\micron. We find a similar morphology to that seen in the visible and at H band--an edge-on disk that is asymmetric in surface brightness. Several aspects of the 1.1\micron data are different, highlighting the need for multi-wavelength images of each circumstellar disk. We find a flattening to the western surface brightness profile at 1.1\micron interior to 2\arcsec (90 AU) and a warp in the western half of the disk. We measure the surface brightness profiles of the two disk lobes and create a measure of the dus…
Results of the study of the color indices and luminosities of 17 optical afterglows (OAs) of GRBs are presented. We show that the color variations during the decline of OAs (except for GRB000131) are relatively small during t-T_0 < 10 days and allow a comparison among them, even for the less densely sampled OAs. The colors in the observer frame, corrected for the Galactic reddening, concentrate at (V-R)_0 = 0.40 +- 0.13, (R-I)_0 = 0.46 +- 0.18, (B-V)_0 = 0.47 +- 0.17. The color evolution of the OAs is negligible although their brightness declines by several magnitudes during the considered tim…
We present models predicting the magnitude, redshift, and color distributions of field galaxies. We explore whether a fading starburst scenario can account for the observations of faint blue galaxies. We marginally rule out a starburst scenario with a local IMF because the models predict too many nearby faint galaxies that are not observed. A burst model with a truncated IMF reproduces the counts and redshift distributions well but produces too blue a population. We show that surface brightness selection has a significant effect on the distributions. In particular, adding a population of low-s…
Using a sample of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic catalog with measured star-formation rates (SFRs) and ultraviolet (UV) photometry from the GALEX Medium Imaging Survey, we derived empirical linear correlations between the SFR to UV luminosity ratio and the UV-optical colors of blue sequence galaxies. The relations provide a simple prescription to correct UV data for dust attenuation that best reconciles the SFRs derived from UV and emission line data. The method breaks down for the red sequence population as well as for very blue galaxies such as the local ``supercomp…
The GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) spectroscopic survey mode, with a resolution of about 8 A in the FUV (1350 - 1750 A) and about 20 A in the NUV (1950 - 2750 A) is used for a systematic search of Ly-a emitting galaxies at low redshift. This aims at filling a gap between high-redshift surveys and a small set of objects studied in detail in the nearby universe. A blind search of 7018 spectra extracted in 5 deep exposures (5.65 sq.deg) has resulted in 96 Ly-a emitting galaxy candidates in the FUV domain, after accounting for broad-line AGNs. The Ly-a EWs (equivalent width) are consistent with…
Intrinsic color profiles of a sample of nine Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) are recovered from the observed color profiles by evaluating spurious gradients introduced by errors in the determination of the sky levels and by different seeing conditions between the observations. Isophote shapes and surface brightness profiles are presented for the four newly observed BCGs. Three out of nine BCGs show color gradients of the order of 0.10 mag per decade in radius. Five BCGs do not possess any color gradient larger than 0.01 mag per decade in radius. We do not see any correlation between the pres…
Surface brightness is a fundamental observational parameter of galaxies. We show, for the first time in detail, how it can be used to obtain photometric redshifts for galaxies, the $μ$-PhotoZ method. We demonstrate that the Tolman surface brightness relation, $μ\propto (1+z)^{-4}$, is a powerful tool for determining galaxy redshifts from photometric data. We develop a model using $μ$ and a color percentile (ranking) measure to demonstrate the $μ$-PhotoZ method. We apply our method to a set of galaxies from the SHELS survey, and demonstrate that the photometric redshift accuracy achieved using …
We analyze J, H and Ks near-infrared data for 9 Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies, selected from a larger sample that we have already studied in the optical. We present contour maps, surface brightness and color profiles, as well as color maps of the sample galaxies. The morphology of the BCDs in the NIR has been found to be basically the same as in the optical. The inner regions of these systems are dominated by the starburst component. At low surface brightness levels the emission is due to the underlying host galaxy; the latter is characterized by red, radially constant colors and isophotes…
Although numerous simulations have been done to understand the effects of intense bursts of star formation on high surface brightness galaxies, few attempts have been made to understand how localized starbursts would affect both the color and surface brightness of low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies. To remedy this, we have run 53 simulations involving bursts of star formation activity on LSB galaxies, varying both the underlying galaxy properties and the parameters describing the starbursts. We discovered that although changing the total color of a galaxy was fairly straightforward, it was …
We present new theoretical models for Surface Brightness Fluctuations (SBF) both for optical and near-infrared bands in standard ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope filter systems. Simple Stellar Population simulations are adopted. Models cover the age and metallicity ranges from $t=5$ to $15~Gyr$ and from $Z=0.0001$ to 0.04 respectively. Effects due to the variation of the Initial Mass Function and the stellar color-temperature relations are explored. Particular attention is devoted to very bright stars in the color-magnitude diagram and to investigate the effects of mass loss along the R…
We have used the first matched set of GALEX and SDSS data to investigate the properties of a sample of 74 nearby galaxies with far-ultraviolet luminosities chosen to overlap the luminosity range of typical high-z Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). GALEX deep surveys have shown that ultraviolet-luminous galaxies (UVLGs) similar to these are the fastest evolving component of the UV galaxy population. Model fits to the combined GALEX and SDSS photometry yield typical FUV extinctions similar to LBGs. The implied star formation rates are SFR ~ 3 to 30 solar mass per year. This overlaps the range of SFRs …
UV and optical images of the face-on spiral galaxies NGC 6753 and NGC 6782 reveal regions of strong on-going star formation that are associated with structures traced by the old stellar populations. We make NUV--(NUV-I) pixel color-magnitude diagrams (pCMDs) that reveal plumes of pixels with strongly varying NUV surface brightness and nearly constant I surface brightness. The plumes correspond to sharply bounded radial ranges, with (NUV-I) at a given NUV surface brightness being bluer at larger radii. The plumes are parallel to the reddening vector and simple model mixtures of young and old po…
