We study how chemical abundances of late B-, A- and early F-type stars evolve with time, and we search for correlations between the abundance of chemical elements and other stellar parameters, such as effective temperature and Vsini. We have observed a large number of B-, A- and F-type stars belonging to open clusters of different ages. In this paper we concentrate on the Praesepe cluster (log t = 8.85), for which we have obtained high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of sixteen normal A- and F-type stars and one Am star, using the SOPHIE spectrograph of the Observatoire de Haute-Provence. For all the observed stars, we have derived fundamental parameters and chemical abundances. In addition, we discuss another eight Am stars belonging to the same cluster, for which the abundance analysis had been presented in a previous paper. We find a strong correlation between peculiarity of Am stars and Vsini. The abundance of the elements underabundant in Am stars increases with Vsini, while it decreases for the overabundant elements. Chemical abundances of various elements appear correlated with the iron abundance.
Aims. We aim to provide observational constraints on diffusion models that predict peculiar chemical abundances in the atmospheres of Am stars. We also intend to check if chemical peculiarities and slow rotation can be explained by the presence of a weak magnetic field. Methods. We have obtained high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of eight previously-classified Am stars, two normal A-type stars and one Blue Straggler, considered to be members of the Praesepe cluster. For all of these stars we have determined fundamental parameters and photospheric abundances for a large number …
The cluster Praesepe (age 650 Myr) is an ideal laboratory to study stellar evolution. Specifically, it allows us to trace the long-term decline of rotation and activity on the main-sequence. Here we present rotation periods measured for five stars in Praesepe with masses of 0.1-0.5Ms -- the first rotation periods for members of this cluster. Photometric periodicities were found from two extensive monitoring campaigns, and are confirmed by multiple independent test procedures. We attribute these variations to magnetic spots co-rotating with the objects, thus indicating the rotation period. The …
We present the abundance measurements of several elements (Fe, Ca, Na, Ni, Ti, Al, Cr, Si) for 20 solar--type stars belonging to four Galactic open clusters: NGC 3680, IC 4651, Praesepe, and M 67. Oxygen abundances were in addition measured for most of the stars in each cluster apart from IC 4651. For NGC 3680 accurate abundance determinations using high--resolution spectra covering a large spectral domain are computed for the first time. We used UVES high--resolution, high signal to noise ratio spectra and performed a differential analysis with respect to the sun, by measuring equivalent widt…
The present paper provides a general overview of the asteroseismic potential of delta Scuti stars in clusters, in particular focusing on convection diagnostics. We give a summarise of the last results obtained by the authors for the Praesepe cluster of which five delta Scuti stars are analysed. In that work, linear analysis is confronted with observations, using refined descriptions for the effects of rotation on the determination of the global stellar parameters and on the adiabatic oscillation frequency computations. A single, complete, and coherent solution for all the selected stars is fou…
Two hundred and forty-two members of the Praesepe and alpha Persei clusters ranging from B (~5Msun) to early-M (~0.5 Msun) have been surveyed with high angular resolution imaging. The 39 binary and 1 quadruple systems detected encompass separations from 0".053 to 7".28; 28 of the systems are new detections and there are 9 candidate substellar companions. The main results from the survey are: * Over the projected separation range of 26-581 AU and magnitude differences of DeltaK < 4.0 mag, the companion star fraction (CSF) for alpha Persei is 0.09 +/- 0.03 and for Praesepe is 0.10 +/- 0.03. This…
We present new BVRI photometry for a sample of 54 local G and K stars with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes in the metallicity range -0.4 < [Fe/H] < +0.3. We use this sample to develop a completely model-independent main sequence (MS) fitting method which we apply to 4 open clusters - the Hyades, Praesepe, the Pleiades and NGC 2516 - which all have direct Hipparcos parallax distance determinations. Comparison of our MS-fitting results with distances derived from Hipparcos parallaxes enables us to explore whether the discrepancy between the Hipparcos distance scale and other MS-fitting methods fou…
Measured from high-resolution spectra, we present Ca II K line chromospheric fluxes in 35 G dwarf stars of 5 open clusters to determine the age-activity-rotation relationship from the young Hyades and Praesepe (0.6 Gyr) to the old M 67 (~ 4.5 Gyr) through the two intermediate age clusters IC 4651 and NGC 3680 (~ 1.7 Gyr). Our data show that a dramatic decrease in chromospheric activity takes place among solar stars between the Hyades and the IC4651 age, in about 1 Gyr. Afterwards, activity remains virtually constant for more than 3 Gyr. We briefly investigate the impact of this result on the a…
Focusing on ROSAT results for clusters in the $\sim 20-600$ Myr range, I first summarize our current understanding of the X-ray activity - rotation - age relationship. Then, the problem of the Hyades K and M dwarfs binaries is addressed: 1. most K and M-type binaries in wide systems are X-ray brighter than single stars; 2. binaries seem to fit into the same activity - rotation relationship as single stars. Points 1. and 2. suggest that the distributions of rotations of single and binary stars should also show a dicothomy, but the few available rotational data do not support the existence of su…
The connection rotation-CaII emission flux-lithium abundance is analyzed for a sample of bona fide subgiant stars, with evolutionary status determined from HIPPARCOS trigonometric parallax measurements and from the Toulouse-Geneva code.
To address the puzzling photometric properties of horizontal branch stars in Galactic GCs, several different groups have undertaken detailed spectroscopic analyses of individual blue HB stars. Hotter BHB stars show strong metal enhancement and helium depletion, likely due to atomic diffusion, and slow rotation velocities, in contrast to the cooler BHB stars, which have a bimodal distribution of rotation speeds -- some of them much faster than expected -- but no anomalous abundances. I review the observational results to date, and discuss possible explanations and ramifications of these abundan…
(Abridged) New boron abundances for seven main-sequence B-type stars are determined from HST STIS spectroscopy around the BIII 2066A line. Boron abundances provide a unique and critical test of stellar evolution models that include rotational mixing since boron is destroyed in the surface layers of stars through shallow mixing long before other elements are mixed from the stellar interior through deep mixing. Boron abundances range from 12+log(B/H) = 1.0 to 2.2. The boron abundances are compared to the published values of their stellar nitrogen abundances (all have 12+log(N/H) < 7.8, i.e., the…
In an attempt of clarifying the connection between the photospheric abundance anomalies and the stellar rotation as well as of exploring the nature of "normal A" stars, the abundances of seven elements (C, O, Si, Ca, Ti, Fe, and Ba) and the projected rotational velocity for 46 A-type field stars were determined by applying the spectrum-fitting method to the high-dispersion spectral data obtained with BOES at BOAO. We found that the peculiarities (underabundances of C, O, and Ca; an overabundance of Ba) seen in slow rotators efficiently decrease with an increase of rotation, which almost disapp…
The Sun's rotation profile and lithium content have been difficult to understand in the context of conventional models of stellar evolution. Classical hydrodynamical models predict that the solar interior must rotate highly differentially, in disagreement with observations. It has recently been shown that internal waves produced by convection in solar-type stars produce an asymmetric, shear layer oscillation, similar to Earth's quasi-biennial oscillation, that leads to efficient angular momentum redistribution from the core to the envelope. We presents results of a model that successfully repr…
Elemental abundances of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, magnesium, aluminum, and silicon are presented for a sample of twelve rapidly rotating OB star (v sin i > 60 km s^-1) members of the Cep OB2, Cyg OB3 and Cyg OB7 associations. The abundances are derived from spectrum synthesis, using both LTE and non-LTE calculations. As found in almost all previous studies of OB stars, the average abundances are slightly below solar, by about 0.1 to 0.3 dex. In the case of oxygen, even with the recently derived low solar abundances the OB stars are closer to, but still below, the solar value. Results for the 9…
We present spectroscopic observations of candidate F, G and K type stars in NGC 6633, an open cluster with a similar age to the Hyades. We identify 10 new cluster members including one short period binary system. Combining this survey with that of Jeffries (1997), we identify a total of 30 solar-type members. We have used the F and early G stars to spectroscopically estimate [Fe/H]=-0.096+/-0.081 for NGC 6633 and with more precision that NGC 6633 has (0.074+/-0.041) dex less iron than the Pleiades and (0.206+/-0.040) dex less iron than the Hyades. Lithium abundances have been estimated for the…
The connection between age, rotation and chemical abundance of magnetic Ap stars is poorly understood. Using open clusters, we are able to study samples of stars that are both co-eval and co-environmental. By determining rotation and chemical abundance for Ap star members of clusters with various ages, the variations of these properties as a function of age and environment can be derived. All four probable Ap star members of the open cluster NGC 6475, as well as one normal late B star, were studied using detailed spectrum synthesis of high resolution UVES-POP spectra. Probable cluster membersh…
Lithium is an excellent tracer of mixing in stars as it is destroyed (by nuclear reactions) at a temperature around $\sim 2.5\times 10^6$ K. The lithium destruction zone is typically located in the radiative region of a star. If the radiative regions are stable, the observed surface value of lithium should remain constant with time. However, comparison of the meteoritic and photospheric Li abundances in the Sun indicate that the surface abundance of Li in the Sun has been depleted by more than two orders of magnitude. This is not predicted by solar models and is a long standing problem. Observ…
In this work we propose a preliminary seismic investigation of $δ$ Scuti stars in the Pleiades cluster, focusing on potential diagnostics of convection and core-overshooting. Taking into account the effect of fast rotation in the modelling, we compare observed frequencies for 4 $δ$ Scuti stars with radial linear instability predictions. A satisfying agreement is reached between the predicted ranges of unstable modes and those derived from observations for ``low-mass'' stars ($\sim 1.55 M_{\odot}$). However, a strong disagreement is found for ``high-mass'' stars ($\sim 1.77 M_{\odot}$), whateve…
The effect of rotation of a star on the distribution of chemical species in radiative zones is discussed. Gravity darkening generates a large radiative force on heavy element ions which is directed toward the equatorial plane. Taking iron as an example, it is shown that this force may produce drift velocities similar to, and larger than, the typical velocities of bulk motion due to meridional circulation. This potentially allows large chemical abundance inhomogeneities to build up across a meridian over the lifetime of the star -- particularly near the equatorial plane. This enhancement may be…
High-resolution spectroscopic measurements of blue horizontal-branch stars in six metal-poor globular clusters -- M3, M13, M15, M68, M92, and NGC 288 -- reveal remarkable variations in photospheric composition and rotation velocity as a function of a star's position along the horizontal branch. For the cooler stars (Teff < 11200 K), the derived abundances are in good agreement with the canonical cluster metallicities, and we find a wide range of v sin i rotation velocities, some as high as 40 km/s. In the hotter stars, however, most metal species are strongly enhanced, by as much as 3 dex, rel…
Boron abundances have been derived for seven main sequence B-type stars from HST STIS spectra around the B III 2066 A line. In two stars, boron appears to be undepleted with respect to the presumed initial abundance. In one star, boron is detectable but it is clearly depleted. In the other four stars, boron is undetectable implying depletions of 1 to 2 dex. Three of these four stars are nitrogen enriched, but the fourth shows no enrichment of nitrogen. Only rotationally induced mixing predicts that boron depletions are unaccompanied by nitrogen enrichments. The inferred rate of boron depletion…
High-resolution optical spectra of eighteen blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars in the globular cluster M15 indicate that their stellar rotation rates and photospheric compositions vary strongly as a function of effective temperature. Among the cooler stars in the sample, at Teff ~ 8500 K, metal abundances are in rough agreement with the canonical cluster metallicity, and the v sin i rotations appear to have a bimodal distribution, with eight stars at v sin i < 15 km/s and two stars at v sin i ~ 35 km/s. Most of the stars at Teff > 10000 K, however, are slowly rotating, v sin i < 7 km/s, and th…
The VLT-Flames Survey for Massive Stars (Evans05,Evans06) provides recise measurements of rotational velocities and nitrogen surface abundances of massive stars in the Magellanic Clouds. Specifically, for the first time, such abundances have been estimated for stars with significant rotational velocities. This extraordinary data set gives us the unique possibility to calibrate rotationally and magnetically induced mixing processes. Therefore, we have computed a grid of stellar evolution models varying in mass, initial rotational velocity and chemical composition. In our models we find that alt…
We present spectroscopic abundance analyses of three main-sequence B stars in the young Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 2004. All three targets have projected rotational velocities around 130 km/s. Techniques are presented that allow the derivation of stellar parameters and chemical abundances in spite of these high v sin i values. Together with previous analyses of stars in this cluster, we find no evidence among the main-sequence stars for effects due to rotational mixing up to v sin i around 130 km/s. Unless the equatorial rotational velocities are significantly larger than the v sin i v…
We compare the properties of recent samples of the lithium abundances in halo stars to one another and to the predictions of theoretical models including rotational mixing, and we examine the data for trends with metal abundance. We find from a KS test that in the absence of any correction for chemical evolution, the Ryan, Norris, & Beers (1999} sample is fully consistent with mild rotational mixing induced depletion and, therefore, with an initial lithium abundance higher than the observed value. Tests for outliers depend sensitively on the threshold for defining their presence, but we find a…
In the present work, we study the link between rotation and lithium abundance in giant stars of luminosity class III, on the basis of a large sample of single stars of spectral type F, G and K. We shows that giant stars presenting the highest lithium contents, typically stars earlier than G0III, are those with the highest rotation rates, pointing for a dependence of lithium content on rotation, as observed for other luminosity classes. Giant stars later than G0III present, as a rule, the lowest rotation rates and lithium contents. A large spread of about five magnitudes in lithium abundance is…
We derive the effective temperatures and gravities of 461 OB stars in 19 young clusters by fitting the H-gamma profile in their spectra. We use synthetic model profiles for rotating stars to develop a method to estimate the polar gravity for these stars, which we argue is a useful indicator of their evolutionary status. We combine these results with projected rotational velocity measurements obtained in a previous paper on these same open clusters. We find that the more massive B-stars experience a spin down as predicted by the theories for the evolution of rotating stars. Furthermore, we find…
We discuss the high lithium abundances in the secondary stars of X-ray binaries. We show that no lithium production in these stars is necessary, and that the abundances can be explained simply due to the tidally locked rotation of the stars, which lead naturally to slower lithium destruction rates. The differences in abundances of CVs' secondaries from those of LMXBs had previously been put forth as evidence that the compact object was related to the lithium abundance, but this scenario also accounts for the lower lithium abundances in the secondary stars in cataclysmic variable systems (CVs) …
We investigate the evolution of the surface properties of models for rotating massive stars, i.e., their luminosities, effective temperatures, surface rotational velocities, and surface abundances of all isotopes, from the zero age main sequence to the supernova stage. Our results are based on the grid of stellar models by Heger, Langer, & Woosley, which covers solar metallicity stars in the initial mass range 8 - 25 solar masses. Results are parameterized by initial mass, initial rotational velocity and major uncertainties in the treatment of the rotational mixing inside massive stars. Rotati…
The dispersion in lithium abundance at fixed effective temperature in young cool stars like the Pleiades has proved a difficult challenge for stellar evolution theory. We propose that Li abundances relative to a mean temperature trend, rather than the absolute abundances, should be used to analyze the spread in abundance. We present evidence that the dispersion in Li equivalent widths at fixed color in cool single Pleiades stars is at least partially caused by stellar atmosphere effects (most likely departures from ionization predictions of model photospheres) rather than being completely expl…
The rotation curves for a sample of 67 spiral galaxies observed by Marquez et al(2002) have been used as input for the multiphase chemicale volution model. By using N[II]/Halpha as estimator of the oxygen abundance, we constraint the possible models for each galaxy. We may, then, predict the time evolution of these galaxies and the present time radial distribution for gas, stars and star formation surface densities and elemental abundances.
(ABRIDGED) We use a fully self-consistent evolutionary code to follow the rotational evolution of red giants, making a comprehensive attempt to assess the role of rotationally induced mixing in the development of abundance anomalies in giants with a range of masses and metallicities in stellar clusters and the field. Unlike most previous work, we do not focus on the determination of combinations of mixing rate and depth that reproduce the data on a particular stellar type. Instead, we concentrate on the more fundamental problem of the simultaneous reproduction of the CNO surface patterns in bo…
High-resolution UVES/VLT spectra of B12, an extreme pole-on Be star in the SMC cluster NGC330, have been analysed using non-LTE model atmospheres to obtain its chemical composition relative to the SMC standard star AV304. We find a general underabundance of metals which can be understood in terms of an extra contribution to the stellar continuum due to emission from a disk which we estimate to be at the ~25% level. When this is corrected for, the nitrogen abundance for B12 shows no evidence of enhancement by rotational mixing as has been found in other non-Be B-type stars in NGC330, and is inc…
We analise the behavior of lithium abundance as a function of effective temperature, projected rotational velocity, orbital period and eccentricity for a sample of 68 binary systems with giant component and orbital period ranging from about 10 to 6400 days. For these binary systems the Li abundances show a gradual decrease with temperature, paralleling the well established result for single giants. We have also observed a dependence of lithium content on rotation. Binary systems with moderate to high rotation present also moderate to high Li content. This study shows also that synchronized bin…
(Abridged) Ca II H and K high resolution observations for 60 evolved stars in the field and in 5 open clusters are presented. From these spectra chromospheric fluxes are derived, and a homogeneous sample of more than 100 giants is built adding data from the literature. In addition, for most stars, rotational velocities were derived from CORAVEL observations. By comparing chromospheric emission in the cluster stars we confirm that chromospheric activity depends on T_eff, and mass, when intermediate mass stars (M~4 Msun) are considered. The Hyades and Praesepe clump giants show the same level of…
Abundances for alpha-elements and Fe in about 150 field subdwarfs and early subgiants with accurate parallaxes and kinematic data are used to discuss the run of abundance ratios in metal-poor stars in the solar neighborhood. Based on kinematics, we separated stars into two populations: the first one has a positive velocity of rotation around the galactic center, and it is likely to be related to the dissipational collapse of the galaxy; the second one has either negligible or negative rotational velocity, and it is likely related to an accretion component. The two populations show a large over…
We have derived abundances of O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Ni and Ba for 43 metal-poor field stars in the solar neighbourhood with iron abundances [Fe/H] ranging from -0.4 to -3.0. Total abundance errors are estimated to about 0.1-0.2 dex for most elements, while relative abundances are most probably more accurate. We have made an extensive comparison with other similar studies and traced the reasons for the, in most cases, relatively small differences. Among the results we note the following: We find [O/Fe] from the O I IR- triplet lines to possibly increase beyond [Fe/H]=-1.0, t…
The solar photospheric carbon abundance has been determined from [C I], C I, CH vibration-rotation, CH A-X electronic and C2 Swan electronic lines by means of a time-dependent, 3D, hydrodynamical model of the solar atmosphere. Departures from LTE have been considered for the C I lines. These turned out to be of increasing importance for stronger lines and are crucial to remove a trend in LTE abundances with the strengths of the lines. Very gratifying agreement is found among all the atomic and molecular abundance diagnostics in spite of their widely different line formation sensitivities. The …
One of the main goals of the COROT mission is to get precise photometric observations of selected bright stars in order to allow the modelling of their interior through asteroseismology. However, in order to interpret the asteroseismological data, the effective temperature, surface gravity, and chemical composition of the stars must be known with sufficient accuracy. To carry out this task, we have developed a spectroscopic method called APASS (Atmospheric Parameters and Abundances from Synthetic Spectra) which allows precise analysis of stars with a moderate to high rotational velocity, which…
Using reconstructed opacities, we construct solar models with low heavy-element abundance. Rotational mixing and enhanced diffusion of helium and heavy elements are used to reconcile the recently observed abundances with helioseismology. The sound speed and density of models where the relative and absolute diffusion coefficients for helium and heavy elements have been increased agree with seismically inferred values at better than the 0.005 and 0.02 fractional level respectively. However, the surface helium abundance of the enhanced diffusion model is too low. The low helium problem in the enh…
$^7$Li Abundances in Halo Stars: Testing Stellar Evolution Models and the Primordial $^7$Li Abundance
Log N(Li)= 2.24 \pm 0.03 $. Models which include microscopic diffusion predict a downward curvature in the $ ^7 $Li destruction isochrones at hot temperatures which is not present in the observations. Thus, the observations clearly rule out models which include uninhibited microscopic diffusion of $ ^7 $Li from the surface of the star. The [Fe/H] = -2.3 stellar models which include both diffusion and rotational mixing provide an excellent match to t…
PG 1605+072 has unique pulsational properties amongst the members of the new class of pulsating sdB (EC 14026) stars. It has the longest periods and the richest, most puzzling frequency spectrum (55 periods). We present a quantitative analysis of a Keck HIRES spectrum using NLTE and LTE model atmospheres. Atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, log(He/H)), metal abundances, and the rotational velocity are determined. He, C, N and O are subsolar as well as the intermediate mass elements Mg and Si, whereas Ne and Fe are solar. This abundance pattern is caused by diffusion. PG 1605+072 displays cons…
We present a seismic study of the beta Cephei star theta Ophiuchi. Our analysis is based on the observation of one radial mode, one rotationally split l = 1 triplet and three components of a rotationally split l = 2 quintuplet for which the m-values were well identified by spectroscopy. We identify the radial mode as fundamental, the triplet as p_1 and the quintuplet as g_1. Our NLTE abundance analysis results in a metallicity and CNO abundances in full agreement with the most recent updated solar values. With X \in [0.71,0.7211] and Z \in [0.009,0.015], and using the Asplund et al. (2005) mix…
We investigate the effect of new stellar models, which take rotation into account, computed for very low metallicities on the chemical evolution of the earliest phases of the Milky Way. We check the impact of these new stellar yields on a model for the halo of the Milky Way that can reproduce the observed halo metallicity distribution. In this way we try to better constrain the ISM enrichment timescale, which was not done in our previous work. The stellar models adopted in this work were computed under the assumption that the ratio of the initial rotation velocity to the critical velocity of s…
The discovery that Vega is a rapidly rotating pole-on star has raised a number of questions about this fundamental standard, including such issues as its composition, and in turn its mass and age. We report here a reanalysis of Vega's composition. A full spectral synthesis based on the Roche model derived earlier from NPOI interferometry is used. We find the line shapes in Vega's spectrum to be more complex than just flat-bottomed, which have been previously reported; profiles range from slightly self-reversed to simple ``V'' shapes. A high SNR spectrum, obtained by stacking spectra from the E…
There has been recent progress in the study of the angular momentum evolution of low mass stars (Krishnamurthi et al 1997a). Theoretical models can now be constructed which reproduce the angular momentum evolution of low mass open cluster stars and the distribution of initial conditions can be inferred from young clusters. In this poster we report on the application of these models to the problem of rotational mixing in halo stars. The distribution of initial conditions inferred from young clusters produces a well-defined halo lithium "plateau" with modest scatter and a small population of out…
Precise Li abundances are determined for 54 giant stars mostly evolving across the Hertzsprung gap. We combine these data with rotational velocity and with information related to the deepening of the convective zone of the stars to analyse their link to Li dilution in the referred spectral region. A sudden decline in Li abundance paralleling the one already established in rotation is quite clear. Following similar results for other stellar luminosity classes and spectral regions, there is no linear relation between Li abundance and rotation, in spite of the fact that most of the fast rotators …
Abundances of 18 chemical elements have been derived for 27 A/Am and 16 F stars members of the Pleiades and Coma Berenices open clusters. We have specifically computed, with the Montréal code, a series of evolutionary models for two A stars members of these two clusters. None of the models reproduces entirely the overall shape of the abundances patterns. The inclusion of competing processes such as rotational mixing in the radiative zones of these stars seems necessary to improve the agreement between observed and predicted abundances patterns.
The solar photospheric oxygen abundance has been determined from [OI], OI, OH vibration-rotation and OH pure rotation lines by means of a realistic time-dependent, 3D, hydrodynamical model of the solar atmosphere. In the case of the OI lines, 3D non-LTE calculations have been performed, revealing significant departures from LTE as a result of photon losses in the lines. We derive a solar oxygen abundance of log O = 8.66 +/- 0.05. All oxygen diagnostics yield highly consistent abundances, in sharp contrast with the results of classical 1D model atmospheres. This low value is in good agreement w…
One of the goals of the ground-based support program for the COROT and Roemer satellite missions is to characterize suitable target stars for the part of the missions dedicated to asteroseismology. We present the detailed abundance analysis of nine of the potential COROT main targets using the semi-automatic software VWA. For two additional COROT targets we could not perform the analysis due to the high rotational velocity of these stars. For five stars with low rotational velocity we have also performed abundance analysis by a classical equivalent width method in order to test the reliability…
Lithium abundances and rotation, determined for 120 subgiant stars in Lebre et al. (1999) are analyzed. To this purpose, the evolutionary status of the sample as well as the individual masses have been determined using the HIPPARCOS trigonometric parallax measurements to locate very precisely our sample stars in the HR diagram. We look at the distributions of A(Li) and Vsini with mass when stars evolve from the main sequence to the subgiant branch. For most of the stars in our sample we find good agreement with the dilution predictions. However, the more massive cool stars with upper limits of…
We compare the Li abundances of a sample of stars with planets discovered with the Doppler method to a sample of stars without detected planets. We prepared the samples by combining the Li abundances reported in several recent studies in a consistent way. Our results confirm recent claims that the Li abundances of stars with planets are smaller than those of stars without planets near the solar temperature. We also find that the vsini and $R^{'}_{\rm HK}$ anomalies correlate with the Li abundance anomalies. These results suggest that planet formation processes have altered the rotation and Li …
The AF-supergiants in the Galaxy and the SMC allow us to examine predictions from evolution models through their CNO abundances. In these proceedings, we recalculate the NLTE nitrogen abundances in 22 Galactic and 9 SMC A-supergiants using improved atomic data and model atmospheres to compare with new evolution models. The new abundances are higher than previously published values, and suggest that most of these stars have undergone substantial mixing with CN-cycled gas. While there is no clear relationship with mass, there is an apparent relation with metallicity since the SMC stars (includin…
