We define the current of a quantum observable and, under well defined conditions, we connect its ensemble average to the index of a Fredholm operator. The present work builds on a formalism developed by Kellendonk and Schulz-Baldes \cite{Kellendonk:2004p597} to study the quantization of edge currents for continuous magnetic Schroedinger operators. The generalization given here may be a useful tool to scientists looking for novel manifestations of the topological quantization. As a new application, we show that the differential conductance of atomic wires is given by the index of a certain operator. We also comment on how the formalism can be used to probe the existence of edge states.
The surface of a 3D topological insulator is a new type of two dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The exactly quantized magneto-optical or axionic response of a 3D topological insulator is a direct result of the Berry's phase protected spin-momentum locked states on its surface. We examine the magnetic susceptibility of topological insulators microscopically and find that the orbital-Zeeman (OZ) cross term, the cross term between the orbital effect and the spin Zeeman effect, is directly related to the Berry curvature when the $z$-component of spin is conserved. In particular, the OZ cross term reflects the spin Chern number, which results in the quantization of the magnetic susceptibility jump at the topological phase transition. The magnitude of the jump is in units of the universal value $4|e|μ_{\rm B}/h$. The physical origin of this quantization is clarified. We a…
Fundamental topological phenomena in condensed matter physics are associated with a quantized electromagnetic response in units of fundamental constants. Recently, it has been predicted theoretically that the time-reversal invariant topological insulator in three dimensions exhibits a topological magnetoelectric effect quantized in units of the fine structure constant $α=e^2/\hbar c$. In this work, we propose an optical experiment to directly measure this topological quantization phenomenon, independent of material details. Our proposal also provides a way to measure the half-quantized Hall co…
Physical problems for which the existence of non-trivial topological Pauli phase (i.e. fractional quantization of angular orbital angular momenta that is possible in 2D case) is essential are discussed within the framework of two-dimensional Helmholtz, Schroedinger and Dirac equations. As examples in classical field theory we consider a "wedge problem" -- a description of a field generated by a point charge between two conducting half-planes -- and a Fresnel diffraction from knife-edge. In few-electron circular quantum dots the choice between integer and half-integer quantization of orbital an…
We demonstrate that HOTIs with the quantization of the quadrupole moments can be realized in the two-dimensional elastic phononic crystals (PnCs). Both one-dimensional (1D) topological edge states and zero-dimensional (0D) topological corner states are visualized and can be transformed each other by tuning the crystalline symmetry in a hierarchical structure. The systematic band structure calculations indicate that elastic wave energy in the hierarchical structure can be localized with remarkable robustness, which is very promising for new generations of integrated solid-state phononic circuit…
Topological quantum pumps are topologically equivalent to the quantum Hall state: In these systems, the charge pumped during each pumping cycle is quantized and coincides with the Chern invariant. However, differently from quantum Hall insulators, quantum pumps can exhibit novel phenomena such as the fractional quantization of the charge transport, as a consequence of their distinctive symmetries in parameter space. Here, we report the analogous fractional quantization of the spin transport in a topological spin pump realized in a one-dimensional lattice via a periodically modulated Zeeman fie…
The Lagrangian describing the bulk electromagnetic response of a three-dimensional strong topological insulator contains a topological `axion' term of the form 'θE dot B'. It is often stated (without proof) that the corresponding action is quantized on periodic space-time and therefore invariant under 'θ-> θ+2π'. Here we provide a simple, physically motivated proof of the axion action quantization on the periodic space-time, assuming only that the vector potential is consistent with single-valuedness of the electron wavefunctions in the underlying insulator.
A one-dimensional quantum charge pump transfers a quantized charge in each pumping cycle. This quantization is topologically robust being analogous to the quantum Hall effect. The charge transferred in a fraction of the pumping period is instead generally unquantized. We show, however, that with specific symmetries in parameter space the charge transferred at well-defined fractions of the pumping period is quantized as integer fractions of the Chern number. We illustrate this in a one-dimensional Harper-Hofstadter model and show that the fractional quantization of the topological charge pumpin…
We study the transition between the two-dimensional topological insulator (TI) featuring quantized edge conductance and the trivial Anderson insulator (AI) induced by strong disorder. We discover a distinct scaling behavior of TI near the phase transition where the longitudinal conductance approaches the quantized value by a power law with system size, instead of an exponential law in clean TI. This region is thus called the weak quantization topological insulator (WQTI). By using the self-consistent Born approximation, we associate the emergence of the weak quantization with the imaginary par…
Despite topological protection and the absence of magnetic impurities, two-dimensional topological insulators display quantized conductance only in surprisingly short channels, which can be as short as 100 nm for atomically thin materials. We show that the combined action of short-range nonmagnetic impurities located near the edges and on site electron-electron interactions effectively creates noncollinear magnetic scatterers, and, hence, results in strong backscattering. The mechanism causes deviations from quantization even at zero temperature and for a modest strength of electron-electron i…
The third-rank tensor of the static spin Hall conductivity is investigated for two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators by electronic structure calculations. Its seeming quantization is numerically demonstrated for highly symmetric systems independent of the gap size. 2D crystals with hexagonal and square Bravais lattice show similar effects, while true rectangular translational symmetry yields conductivity values much below the quantum $e^2/h$. Field-induced lifting the inversion symmetry does not influence the quantum spin Hall state up to band inversion but the conductivity quantization.…
We study the quantization of the excess charge on $N$ localized (ultra-screened) impurities in $d$-dimensional crystalline insulating systems. Solving Dyson's equation, we demonstrate that such charges are topological, by expressing them as winding numbers of appropriate functionals of bulk position space Green's functions. We discuss the ties of our topological invariant with the nearsightedness principle of W. Kohn, stating that the electronic charge density at fixed chemical potential depends on the external field only locally, meaning that localized perturbations by external fields may onl…
We show that the interplay of cyclotron motion and Andreev reflection experienced by massless-Dirac-like charge carriers in topological-insulator surface states generates a Majorana-particle excitation. Based on an envelope-function description of the Dirac-Andreev edge states, we discuss the kinematic properties of the Majorana mode and find them to be possible to be tuned by changing the superconductor's chemical potential and/or the magnitude of the perpendicular magnetic field. Our proposal opens up new possibilities for studying Majorana fermions in a controllable setup.
The robust quantization of observables in units of universal constants is a hallmark of topological phases. We show that chiral higher order topological insulators (HOTIs), bulk insulators with chiral hinge states, present two unusual features related to quantization. First, we show that circular dichroism is quantized to an integer or zero depending on the orientation of the sample. This probe locates the hinge states, and can be used to distinguish different types of chiral HOTIs. Second, we find that the average of the local Chern marker over a single surface, an observable related to the s…
Topological insulator (TI) thin films with surface magnetism are expected to exhibit a quantized anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) when the magnetizations on the top and bottom surfaces are parallel, and a quantized topological magnetoelectric (QTME) response when the magnetizations have opposing orientations (axion insulator phase) and the films are sufficiently thick. We present a unified picture of both effects that associates deviations from exact quantization of the QTME caused by finite thickness with non-locality in the side-wall current response function. Using realistic tight-binding model…
We consider a magnetic skyrmion adiabatically driven by a spin-polarized electrical current periodic in both space and time and asymmetric in space, and also subject to a random magnetic field representing the thermal fluctuations. We show that when the random magnetic field is low enough, while the time variation of the driving current is slow enough, the skyrmion flow is an integer multiply of the ratio between the space and time periods, the integer being a topological invariant called Chern number. This result is also demonstrated by numerically solving the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbe…
The intrinsic magnetic topological insulators, Mn(Bi1-xSbx)2Te4, in their spin-aligned strong field configuration have been identified as a Weyl semimetal with single pair of Weyl nodes1-4. A direct consequence of the Weyl state is the layer-dependent Chern number (C) in thin film quantization. Previous reports in MnBi2Te4 thin films revealed the higher C states in the spin alignment by either increasing the film thickness5 or controlling chemical potential into electron doping6-8. A clear picture of the higher Chern states is still missing as the situation is complicated by the emerging of su…
We consider the quantum Hall effect (QHE) in a system of interacting electrons. Our formalism is valid for systems in the presence of an external magnetic field, as well as for systems with a nontrivial band topology. That is, the expressions for the conductivity derived are valid for both the ordinary QHE and for the intrinsic anomalous QHE. The expression for the conductivity applies to external fields that may vary in an arbitrary way, and takes into account disorder. It is assumed that the ground state of the system is degenerate. We represent the QHE conductivity as $\frac{e^2}{h} \times …
We study Markovian stochastic motion on a graph with finite number of nodes and adiabatically periodically driven transition rates. We show that, under general conditions, the quantized currents that appear at low temperatures are a manifestation of topological invariants in the counting statistics of currents. This observation provides an approach for classification of topological properties of the counting statistics, as well as for extensions of the phenomenon of the robust quantization of currents at low temperatures to the properties of the counting statistics which persist to finite temp…
The beauty of quantum Hall (QH) effect is the metrological precision of Hall resistance quantization that originates from the topological edge states. Understanding the factors that lead to quantization breakdown not only provides important insights on the nature of the topological protection of these edge states, but is beneficial for device applications involving such quantized transport. In this work, we combine conventional transport and real space conductivity mapping to investigate whether the quantization breakdown is tied to the disappearance of edge state in the hotly studied MnBi2Te4…
Topological phases of matter arise in distinct fermionic and bosonic flavors. The fundamental differences between them are encapsulated in their rotational symmetries - the spin. Although spin quantization is routinely encountered in fermionic topological edge states, analogous quantization for bosons has proven elusive. To this end, we develop the complete electromagnetic continuum theory characterizing 2+1D topological bosons, taking into account their intrinsic spin and orbital angular momentum degrees of freedom. We demonstrate that spatiotemporal dispersion (momentum and frequency depende…
Recently we predicted that the Andreev bound state spectrum of 4-terminal Josephson junctions may possess topologically protected zero-energy Weyl singularities, which manifest themselves in a quantized transconductance in units of $4e^2/h$ when two of the terminals are voltage biased [R.-P. Riwar et al., Nature Commun. 7, 11167 (2016)]. Here, using the Landauer-Büttiker scattering theory, we compute numerically the currents flowing through such a structure in order to assess the conditions for observing this effect. We show that the voltage below which the transconductance becomes quantized i…
We study the generation of Majorana fermions in a two-dimensional topological superconductor placed in a transverse magnetic field B. A topological insulator/superconductor heterostructure and a two-dimensional p-wave superconductor are discussed. It is demonstrated that in these systems a single vortex creates two Majorana fermions, one hosted at the vortex core. The wave function of the second Majorana state is localized in the superconductor volume along a circle of radius $r^* \propto B^{-1}$ centered at the vortex core. In the case of many vortices, the sensitivity of $r^*$ to the magneti…
Topological effects typically discussed in the context of quantum physics are emerging as one of the central paradigms of physics. Here, we demonstrate the role of topology in energy transport through dimerized micro- and nano-mechanical lattices in the classical regime, i.e., essentially "masses and springs". We show that the thermal conductance factorizes into topological and non-topological components. The former takes on three discrete values and arises due to the appearance of edge modes that prevent good contact between the heat reservoirs and the bulk, giving a length-independent reduct…
Within the framework of adiabatic approximation, the energy levels and direct interband light absorption in a strongly prolated ellipsoidal quantum dot are studied. Analytical expressions for the particle energy spectrum and absorption threshold frequencies in three regimes of quantization are obtained. Selection rules for quantum transitions are revealed. Absorption edge and absorption coefficient for three regimes of size quantization (SQ) are also considered. To facilitate the comparison of obtained results with the probable experimental data, size dispersion distribution of growing quantum…
Strong spin-orbit coupling in topological insulators results in the ubiquitously observed weak antilocalization feature in their magnetoresistance. Here we present magnetoresistance measurements in ultra thin films of the topological insulator Bi_2Se_3, and show that in the 2D quantum limit, in which the topological insulator bulk becomes quantized, an additional negative magnetoresistance feature appears. Detailed analysis associates this feature with weak localization of the quantized bulk channels, providing thus evidence for this quantization. Examination of the dephasing fields at differe…
The Josephson current flowing in a junction between two superconductors is a striking manifestation of macroscopic quantum coherence, with applications in metrology and quantum information. This equilibrium current is related with the formation of Andreev states localized in the junction, whose energy depends periodically on the superconducting phase difference. Topology emerged as a guide for predicting exotic properties of Andreev states. In particular, topological superconductors host Majorana modes at their ends. Then, in a junction with such leads, the hybridization of two Majorana modes …
The ensemble geometric phase (EGP) has been proposed as a topological indicator for finite-temperatures systems. The ensemble Wilson loop, or the transfer matrix, contains the crucial information in the EGP construction. We propose a proxy index and a proxy EGP directly from the transfer matrix and apply them to time-reversal invariant topological insulators exemplified by the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang (BHZ) and Kane-Mele (KM) models. The quantized proxy index and proxy EGP smoothly generalize the ground-state topological index to finite temperatures. For the BHZ model, a comparison with another t…
The semiclassical quantization of cyclotron orbits for two-dimensional Bloch electrons in a coupled two band model with a particle-hole symmetric spectrum is considered. As concrete examples, we study graphene (both mono and bilayer) and boron nitride. The main focus is on wave effects -- such as Berry phase and Maslov index -- occurring at order $\hbar$ in the semiclassical quantization and producing non-trivial shifts in the resulting Landau levels. Specifically, we show that the index shift appearing in the Landau levels is related to a topological part of the Berry phase -- which is basica…
We develop a general theory to study strong random quenched disorder effects in systems of experimental relevance in the search for Majorana zero modes (MZM) in topological superconductors. Using the random matrix theory in a class D ensemble, we simulate the transport properties of random quantum dots by attaching leads, and calculating the differential conductance in the $S$ matrix formalism. To add the concept of the length to the random system so that disordered Majorana nanowires can be simulated by the random matrix theory, we generalize the model of a single quantum dot to a chain of qu…
The recent theoretical prediction and experimental realization of topological insulators (TI) has generated intense interest in this new state of quantum matter. The surface states of a three-dimensional (3D) TI such as Bi_2Te_3, Bi_2Se_3 and Sb_2Te_3 consist of a single massless Dirac cones. Crossing of the two surface state branches with opposite spins in the materials is fully protected by the time reversal (TR) symmetry at the Dirac points, which cannot be destroyed by any TR invariant perturbation. Recent advances in thin-film growth have permitted this unique two-dimensional electron sys…
The robustness of the anomalous Hall conductance, $σ_{yx}^{}= σ_{H}^{}$, quantization in the model of a~two-dimensional disordered gas of massive Dirac electrons subjected to an external orthogonal magnetic field is investigated in the framework of Kubo--Středa formalism. Using the momentum representation for the averaged one-electron Green functions in a~magnetic field, an explicit analytical expression for the Středa term of $σ_{H}^{}$ is obtained. It is shown that this term is proportional to the topological Chern number, ${\rm Ch}=\pm 1/2$, if the Fermi level is in the energy gap. In this …
In the recently discovered topological crystalline insulators SnTe and Pb_{1-x}Sn_{x}(Te,Se), crystal symmetry and electronic topology intertwine to create topological surface states with many interesting features including Lifshitz transition, Van-Hove singularity and fermion mass generation. These surface states are protected by mirror symmetry with respect to the (110) plane. In this work we present a comprehensive study of the effects of different mirror-symmetry-breaking perturbations on the (001) surface band structure. Pristine (001) surface states have four branches of Dirac fermions a…
Recent work has extended topological band theory to open, non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, yet little is understood about how non-Hermiticity alters the topological quantization of associated observables. We address this problem by studying the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) generated in the Dirac surface states of a 3D time-reversal-invariant topological insulator (TI) that is proximity-coupled to a metallic ferromagnet. By constructing a contact self-energy for the ferromagnet, we show that in addition to generating a mass gap in the surface spectrum, the ferromagnet can introduce a non-Her…
A three-dimensional topological insulator features a two-dimensional surface state consisting of a single linearly-dispersive Dirac cone. Under broken time-reversal symmetry, the single Dirac cone is predicted to cause half-integer quantization of Hall conductance, which is a manifestation of the parity anomaly in quantum field theory. However, despite various observations of quantization phenomena, the half-integer quantization has been elusive because a pair of equivalent Dirac cones on two opposing surfaces are simultaneously measured in ordinary experiments. Here we demonstrate the half-in…
Superconducting circuits incorporating Josephson tunnel junctions are widely used for fundamental research as well as for applications in fields such as quantum information and magnetometry. The quantum coherent nature of Josephson junctions makes them especially suitable for metrology applications. Josephson junctions suffice to form two sides of the quantum metrology triangle, relating frequency to either voltage or current, but not its base, which directly links voltage to current. We propose a five Josephson tunnel junction circuit in which simultaneous pumping of flux and charge results i…
Quantum states induced by single-atomic impurities are at the frontier of physics and material science. While such states have been reported in high-temperature superconductors and dilute magnetic semiconductors, they are unexplored in topological magnets which can feature spin-orbit tunability. Here we use spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) to study the engineered quantum impurity in a topological magnet Co3Sn2S2. We find that each substituted In impurity introduces a striking localized bound state. Our systematic magnetization-polarized probe reveals that this …
We show that topological defects in quadrupole insulators do not host quantized fractional charges, contrary to what their Wannier representation indicates. In particular, we test the charge quantization hypothesis based on the Wannier representation of a parametric defect and a disclination. Against the expectations, we find that the local charge density decays as $\sim 1/r^2$ with distance, leading to a diverging defect charge. We identify sublattice symmetry and not higher order topology as the origin of the previously reported charge quantization.
As for a generic parameter dependent hamiltonian with the time reversal (TR) invariance, a non Abelian Berry connection with the Kramers (KR) degeneracy are introduced by using a quaternionic Berry connection. This quaternionic structure naturally extends to the many body system with the KR degeneracy. Its topological structure is explicitly discussed in comparison with the one without the KR degeneracy. Natural dimensions to have non trivial topological structures are discussed by presenting explicit gauge fixing. Minimum models to have accidental degeneracies are given with/without the KR de…
