The beauty of quantum Hall (QH) effect is the metrological precision of Hall resistance quantization that originates from the topological edge states. Understanding the factors that lead to quantization breakdown not only provides important insights on the nature of the topological protection of these edge states, but is beneficial for device applications involving such quantized transport. In this work, we combine conventional transport and real space conductivity mapping to investigate whether the quantization breakdown is tied to the disappearance of edge state in the hotly studied MnBi2Te4 system. Our experimental results unambiguously show that topological edge state does exist when quantization breakdown occurs. Such edge state is dissipative in nature and could lead to a quantization breakdown due to its diffusive character causing overlapping with bulk and other edge states in real devices. Our findings bring attentions to issues that are generally inaccessible in the transport study of QH, but can play important roles in practical measurements and device applications.
Signatures of quantum transport are expected to quickly vanish as dissipation is introduced in a system. This dissipation can take several forms, including that of particle loss, which has the consequence that the total probability current is not conserved. Here, we study the effect of such losses at a quantum point contact (QPC) for ultracold atoms. Experimentally, dissipation is provided by a near-resonant optical tweezer whose power and detuning control the loss rates for the different internal atomic states as well as their effective Zeeman shifts. We theoretically model this situation by …
The dissipative response of a quantum system upon a time-dependent drive can be exploited as a probe of its geometric and topological properties. In this work, we explore the implications of such phenomena in the context of two-dimensional gases subjected to a uniform magnetic field. It is shown that a filled Landau level exhibits a quantized circular dichroism, which can be traced back to its underlying non-trivial topology. Based on selection rules, we find that this quantized circular dichroism can be suitably described in terms of Rabi oscillations, whose frequencies satisfy simple quantiz…
We determine the Hall conductivity of light-driven graphene, with specific focus on its frequency dependence, and compare it to the static effective approximation, based on Floquet states. This approximation gives the Haldane model as the effective model for light-driven graphene, with a gapped spectrum and a quantized Hall conductivity of $-2e^2/h$. We simulate both the light-driven and the effective model, and explicitly include the dissipative environment in our simulations. We investigate the effect of different driving regimes and dissipation strengths on the Hall conductivity in graphene…
Recent work (PRX 7, 041008) has shown that a spin coupled to two externally supplied circularly-polarized electromagnetic modes can effectuate a topological, quantized transfer of photons from one mode to the other. Here we study the effect in the case when only one of the modes is externally provided, while the other is a dynamical quantum mechanical cavity mode. Focusing on the signatures and stability under experimentally accessible conditions, we show that the effect persists down to the few-photon quantum limit and that it can be used to generate highly entangled "cat states" of cavity an…
Anomalous Edge Transport in the Quantum Anomalous Hall State
In a recent experiment, half-quantized longitudinal conductance plateaus (HQCPs) of height $\frac{e^2}{2h}$ have been observed in quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator/superconductor heterostructure transport measurements. It was predicted that these HQCPs are signatures of chiral Majorana edge states. The HQCPs are supposed to appear in the regimes where the Hall conductance $σ_{xy}$ is quantized. However, experimentally, a pair of the HQCPs appear when the Hall conductance $σ_{xy}$ is only 80% of the quantized value when dissipative channels appear in the bulk. The dissipative channels in t…
An intriguing observation on the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) is the dissipative edge states, where quantized Hall resistance is accompanied by nonzero longitudinal resistance. We numerically investigate this dissipative behavior of QAHE in MTIs with a three-dimensional tight-binding model and non-equilibrium Greens function formalism. It is found that, in clean samples, the geometric mismatch between the detecting electrodes and the MTI sample leads to additional scattering in the central Hall bar, which is similar to the effect of splitting g…
We employ a recently developed quantization scheme for quasinormal modes (QNMs) to study a nonperturbative open cavity-QED system consisting of a hybrid metal-dielectric resonator coupled to a quantum emitter. This hybrid cavity system allows one to explore the complex coupling between a low $Q$ (quality factor) resonance and a high $Q$ resonance, manifesting in a striking Fano resonance, an effect that is not captured by traditional quantization schemes using normal modes or a Jaynes-Cummings (JC) type model. The QNM quantization approach rigorously includes dissipative coupling between the Q…

Topological phases of matter are protected from local perturbations and therefore have been thought to be robust against decoherence. However, it has not been systematically explored whether and how topological states are dynamically robust against the environment-induced decoherence. In this Letter, we develop a theory for topological systems that incorporate dissipations, noises and thermal effects. We derive novelly the exact master equation and the transient quantum transport for the study of dissipative topological systems, mainly focusing on noninteracting topological insulators and topo…
We construct a metamaterial from radio-frequency harmonic oscillators, and find two topologically distinct phases resulting from dissipation engineered into the system. These phases are distinguished by a quantized value of bulk energy transport. The impulse response of our circuit is measured and used to reconstruct the band structure and winding number of circuit eigenfunctions around a dark mode. Our results demonstrate that dissipation can lead to topological transport in a much wider class of physical systems than considered before.

We study the time-development processes of spin and charge transport phenomena in a topological Dirac semimetal attached to a ferromagnetic insulator with a precessing magnetization. Compared to conventional normal metals, topological Dirac semimetals manifest a large inverse spin Hall effect when a spin current is pumped from the attached ferromagnetic insulator. It is shown that the induced charge current is semi-quantized, i.e., it depends only on the distance between the two Dirac points in momentum space and hardly depends on the disorder strength when the system remains in the topologica…
We study the escape rate of a particle in a metastable potential in presence of a dissipative bath coupled to the momentum of the particle. Using the semiclassical bounce technique, we find that this rate is exponentially enhanced. In particular, the influence of momentum dissipation depends on the slope of the barrier that the particle is tunneling through. We investigate also the influence of dissipative baths coupled to the position, and to the momentum of the particle, respectively. In this case the rate exhibits a non-monotonic behavior as a function of the dissipative coupling strengths.…
We predict quantized Imbert-Fedorov, Goos-Hänchen, and photonic spin Hall shifts for light beams impinging on a graphene-on-substrate system in an external magnetic field. In the quantum Hall regime the Imbert-Fedorov and photonic spin Hall shifts are quantized in integer multiples of the fine structure constant $α$, while the Goos- Hänchen ones in multiples of $α^2$. We investigate the influence on these shifts of magnetic field, temperature, and material dispersion and dissipation. An experimental demonstration of quantized beam shifts could be achieved at terahertz frequencies for moderate …

In the presence of arbitrary three-dimensional linear media with material loss and amplification, we present an electromagnetic field quantization scheme for quasinormal modes (QNMs), extending previous work for lossy media [Franke et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 213901 (2019)]. Applying a symmetrization transformation, we show two fundamentally different ways for constructing a QNM photon Fock space, including (i) where there is a separate operator basis for both gain and loss, and (ii) where the loss and gain degrees of freedom are combined into a single basis. These QNM operator bases are sub…
