We have measured the magnetoresistance of a dc superconducting quantum interference device in the form of an interrupted mesoscopic normal-metal loop in contact with two superconducting electrodes. Below the transition temperature of the superconducting electrodes, large $h/2e$ periodic magnetoresistance oscillations are observed. By adding a small dc bias to the ac measurement current, $h/4e$ oscillations can be produced. Lowering the temperature further leads to even larger oscillations, and eventually to sharp switching from the superconducting state to the normal state. This flux-dependent resistance could be utilized to make highly sensitive flux detector.
We report a giant inverse proximity effect that arises in the low-dimensional devices and is crucially different from proximity in the standard superconductor-normal-superconductor (S/N/S) junctions. The normal conductors induce a giant back-action on the proximity superconducting regions even when the dimensions of the normal parts are smaller than the proximity coherence length. This essentially suppresses the superconducting characteristics of the entire system, including the critical current, well below those for the usual S/N/S structures.

We argue that by inducing superconductivity in graphene via the proximity effect, it is possible to observes the "quantum valley Hall effect". In the presence of magnetic field, supercurrent causes "valley pseudospin" to accumulate at the edges of the superconducting strip. This, and the structure of the superconducting vortex core, provide possibilities to experimentally observe aspects of the "deconfined quantum criticality".
We study the role of the superconducting proximity effect on the electron-phonon energy exchange in diffusive normal metals (N) attached to superconductors (S). The proximity effect modifies the spectral response of the normal metal, in particular the local density of states. This leads to a weakening of the electron-phonon energy relaxation. We show that the effect is easily observable with modern thermometry methods, and predict that it can be tuned in structures connected to multiple superconductors by adjusting the phase difference between superconducting order parameters at the two NS int…
We have investigated transport through graphene Andreev interferometers exhibiting reentrance of the superconducting proximity effect. We observed a crossover in the Andreev conductance oscillations as a function of gate voltage ($V_{BG}$). At high $V_{BG}$ the energy-dependent oscillation amplitude exhibits a scaling predicted for non-interacting electrons, which breaks down at low $V_{BG}$. The phenomenon is a manifestation of electron-electron interactions, whose main effect is to shorten the single-particle phase coherence time $τ_ϕ$. These results indicate that graphene provides a useful …
We present a theory of non-equilibrium superconducting proximity effect in an interacting quantum dot induced by a time-dependent tunnel coupling between dot and a superconducting lead. The proximity effect, that is established when the driving frequency fulfills a gate-voltage-dependent resonance condition, can be probed through the tunneling current into a weakly-coupled normal lead. Furthermore, we propose to generate and manipulate coherent superpositions of quantum-dot states with electron numbers differing by two, by applying pulsed oscillatory variations to the couplings between dot and…
The proximity effect is a central feature of superconducting junctions as it underlies many important applications in devices and can be exploited in the design of new systems with novel quantum functionality. Recently, exotic proximity effects have been observed in various systems, such as superconductor-metallic nanowires and graphene-superconductor structures. However, it is still not clear how superconducting order propagates spatially in a heterogeneous superconductor system. Here we report intriguing influences of junction geometry on the proximity effect for a 2D heterogeneous supercond…
We investigate superconducting proximity effect in clean ferromagnetic layers with rough boundaries. The subgap density of states is formed by Andreev bound states at energies which depend on trajectory length and the ferromagnetic exchange field. At energies above the gap, the spectrum is governed by resonant scattering states. The resulting density of states, measurable by tunneling spectroscopy, exhibits a rich structure, which allows to connect the theoretical parameters from experiments.
Superconducting vortex loops have so far avoided experimental detection despite being the focus of much theoretical work. We here propose a method of creating controllable vortex loops in the superconducting condensate arising in a normal metal through the proximity effect. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically that superconducting vortex loops emerge when the junction is pierced by a current-carrying insulated wire and give an analytical expression for their radii. The vortex loops can readily be tuned big enough to hit the sample surface, making them directly observable through sc…
We study theoretically proximity-induced superconductivity and its inverse effect in dice lattice flat band model by considering Josephson junction with an s-wave pairing in the superconducting leads. Using self-consistent tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes method, we show that there is a critical value for chemical potential of the superconductors depending on paring interaction strength over which for undoped normal region the proximity effect is enhanced. Whereas if the superconductor chemical potential is less than the critical one the proximity effect decreases regardless of normal region…
The Rashba superconductor, in which spin-splitting bands become superconducting, is fascinating as a novel superconducting system in low dimensional systems. Here, we present the results of $\textit{in-situ}$ transport measurements on a Rashba-type surface state of the striped incommensurate (SIC) phase of a Pb atomic layer on Ge(111) surface with additional Pb islands/clusters on it. We found that two-step superconducting transitions at around 7 K and 3 K occurred. The latter superconducting transition is suggested to be induced at the non-superconducting Rashba SIC area because of the latera…
We demonstrate simultaneous measurements of DC transport properties and flux noise of a hybrid superconducting magnetometer based on the proximity effect (superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor, SQUIPT). The noise is probed by a cryogenic amplifier operating in the frequency range of a few MHz. In our non-optimized device, we achieve minimum flux noise $\sim 4\;μΦ_0/Hz^{1/2}$, set by the shot noise of the probe tunnel junction. The flux noise performance can be improved by further optimization of the SQUIPT parameters, primarily minimization of the proximity junction length …
052<p type="texpara" tag="Body Text" et="abstract" >The superconducting proximity effect is measured in sandwiches of thin Pb films and the alkali metals Cs, Rb, K and Na. The $T_{c}$-dependence provides information about the interface barriers between Pb and the alkalis. Such a barrier is particularly large in Pb/Cs sandwiches. It is not due to impurities or oxydation. In the presence of a sufficiently strong barrier a special form of the Cooper limit can be applied to calculate the transition temperature of the sandwich.
We reconsider the problem of the superconducting proximity effect in a diffusive ferromagnet bounded by tunneling interfaces, using spin-dependent boundary conditions. This introduces for each interface a phase-shifting conductance Gphi which results from the spin dependence of the phase shifts acquired by the electrons upon scattering on the interface. We show that Gphi strongly affects the density of states and supercurrents predicted for superconducting/ferromagnetic hybrid circuits. We show the relevance of this effect by identifying clear signatures of Gphi in the data of T. Kontos et al …
We study subgap transport from a superconductor through a double quantum dot with large on-site Coulomb repulsion to two normal leads. Non-local superconducting correlations in the double dot are induced by the proximity to the superconducting lead, detectable in non-local Andreev transport that splits Cooper pairs in locally separated, spin-entangled electrons. We find that the $I$--$V$ characteristics are strongly asymmetric: for a large bias voltage of certain polarity, transport is blocked by populating the double dot with states whose spin symmetry is incompatible with the superconductor.…
We present the realization and characterization of a novel-concept interferometer, the superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor (SQUIPT). Its operation relies on the modulation with the magnetic field of the density of states of a proximized metallic wire embedded in a superconducting ring. Flux sensitivities down to $\sim 10^{-5} Φ_0$Hz$^{-1/2}$ can be achieved even for a non-optimized design, with an intrinsic dissipation ($\sim 100$ fW) which is several orders of magnitude smaller than in conventional superconducting interferometers. Our results are in agreement with the th…
Topological crystalline insulators represent a new state of matter, in which the electronic transport is governed by mirror-symmetry protected Dirac surface states. Due to the helical spin-polarization of these surface states, the proximity of topological crystalline matter to a nearby superconductor is predicted to induce unconventional superconductivity and thus to host Majorana physics. We report on the preparation and characterization of Nb-based superconducting quantum interference devices patterned on top of topological crystalline insulator SnTe thin films. The SnTe films show weak anti…
In this article we review the basic theoretical properties of a hybrid superconducting interferometer which exploits the phase dependence of the density of states of a metallic nanowire placed in good electric contact with a superconductor to achieve high sensitivity to magnetic flux. The operation of a prototype structure based on this principle, the superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor (SQUIPT), has been recently reported. Limited power dissipation joined with the opportunity to access single-spin detection make this interferometer attractive for the investigation of the…
We analyze an interplay between the proximity effect and quantum interference of electrons in hybrid structures superconductor-normal metal-superconductor which contain several insulating barriers. We demonstrate that the dc Josephson current in these structures may change qualitatively due to quantum interference of electrons scattered at different interfaces. In junctions with few conducting channels mesoscopic fluctuations of the supercurrent are significant and its amplitude can be strongly enhanced due to resonant effects. In the many channel limit averaging over the scattering phase effe…
The anti-proximity effect, where the superconductivity in superconducting nanowires is suppressed or weakened when contacted by bulk superconducting electrodes, first revealed in arrays of Zn nanowires by tuning the electrodes from the superconducting to the normal state by means of an external magnetic field, has been confirmed in single crystal Aluminum nanowires. The critical current at zero magnetic field of an individual aluminum nanowire contacted by superconducting electrodes was found to be significantly smaller than that with normal electrodes showing that the effect is not a conseque…
Using a numerical tight-binding approach based on the Chebyshev-Bogoliubov-de Gennes method we describe Josephson junctions made of multilayer graphene contacted by top superconducting gates. Both Bernal (ABA) and rhombohedral (ABC) stacking are considered and we find that the type of stacking has a strong effect on the proximity effect and the supercurrent flow. For both cases the pair amplitude shows a polarization between dimer and non-dimer atoms, being more pronounced for rhombohedral stacking. Even though the proximity effect in non-dimer sites is enhanced when compared to single layer g…
We study the full counting statistics of charge transport through a quantum dot tunnel-coupled to one normal and one superconducting lead with a large superconducting gap. As function of the level detuning, there is a crossover from a regime with strong superconducting correlations in the quantum dot to a regime in which the proximity effect on the quantum dot is suppressed. We analyze the current fluctuations of this crossover in the shot-noise regime. In particular, we predict that the full counting statistics changes from Poissonian with charge 2e, typical for Cooper pairs, to Poissonian wi…
We investigate the properties of complex mesoscopic superconducting-normal hybrid devices, Andreev-Interferometers in the case, where the current is proped through a superconducting tunneling contact whereas the proximity effect is generated by a transparent SN-interface. We show within the quasiclassical Green's functions technique, how the fundamental SNIS-element of the such structures can be mapped onto an effective S$^\prime$IS-junction, where S$^\prime$ is the proximised material with an effective energy gap $E_g<Δ$. We propose the Andreev-Interferometer, where $E_g$ can be tuned by an e…
We report the fabrication and characterization of an alternative design for a superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor (SQUIPT) based on a normal metal (N) probe. The absence of direct Josephson coupling between the proximized metal nanowire and the N probe allows us to observe the full modulation of the wire density of states around zero voltage and current \textit{via} the application of an external magnetic field. This results into a drastic suppression of power dissipation which can be as low as a few $\sim 10^{-17}$ W. In this context the interferometer allows an improvem…
We report the fabrication of strongly coupled nanohybrid superconducting junctions using PbS semiconductor nanowires and Pb0.5In0.5 superconducting electrodes. The maximum supercurrent in the junction reaches up to ~15 μA at 0.3 K, which is the highest value ever observed in semiconductor-nanowire-based superconducting junctions. The observation of microwave-induced constant voltage steps confirms the existence of genuine Josephson coupling through the nanowire. Monotonic suppression of the critical current under an external magnetic field is also in good agreement with the narrow junction mod…
We consider the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between magnetic impurities on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator with proximity induced superconductivity. A superconductor placed on the top of the topological insulator induces a gap in the surface electron states and gives rise to a long-ranged in-plane antiferromagnetic RKKY interaction. This interaction is frustrated due to strong spin-orbit coupling, decays as $1/r$ for $r<ξ$, where $r$ is the distance between two magnetic impurities and $ξ$ the superconducting coherence length, and dominates over the…
Coupling a normal metal wire to a superconductor induces an excitation gap in the normal metal. In the absence of disorder, the induced excitation gap is strongly suppressed by finite-size effects if the thickness of the superconductor is much smaller than the thickness of the normal metal and the superconducting coherence length. We show that the presence of disorder, either in the bulk or at the exposed surface of the superconductor, significantly enhances the magnitude of the induced gap, such that it approaches the superconducting gap in the limit of strong disorder. We also discuss the sh…
We report the design and implementation of a high-performance superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor (SQUIPT) based on aluminum-copper (Al-Cu) technology. With the adoption of a thin and short copper nanowire we demostrate full phase-driven modulation of the proximity-induced minigap in the normal metal density of states. Under optimal bias we record unprecedently high flux-to-voltage (up to 3 mV/$Φ_0$) and flux-to-current (exceeding 100 nA/$Φ_0$) transfer function values at sub-Kelvin temperatures, where $Φ_0$ is the flux quantum. The best magnetic flux resolution (as low a…
We study the proximity effect between the fully-gapped region of a topological insulator in direct contact with an s-wave superconducting electrode (STI) and the surrounding topological insulator flake (TI) in Au/Bi$_{1.5}$Sb$_{0.5}$Te$_{1.7}$Se$_{1.3}$/Nb devices. The conductance spectra of the devices show the presence of a large induced gap in the STI as well as the induction of superconducting correlations in the normal part of the TI on the order of the Thouless energy. The shape of the conductance modulation around zero-energy varies between devices and can be explained by existing theor…
Graphene-based Josephson junctions provide a novel platform for studying the proximity effect due to graphene's unique electronic spectrum and the possibility to tune junction properties by gate voltage. Here we describe graphene junctions with a mean free path of several micrometres, low contact resistance and large supercurrents. Such devices exhibit pronounced Fabry-Pérot oscillations not only in the normal-state resistance but also in the critical current. The proximity effect is mostly suppressed in magnetic fields below 10mT, showing the conventional Fraunhofer pattern. Unexpectedly, som…
Motivated by the recent findings of unconventional superconductivity in $\mathrm{CoSi_2 / TiSi_2}$ heterostructures, we study the effect of interface induced Rashba spin orbit coupling on the conductance of a three terminal "T" shape superconducting device. We calculate the differential conductance for this device within the quasi-classical formalism that includes the mixing of triplet-singlet pairing due to the Rashba spin orbit coupling. We discuss our result in the light of the conductance spectra reported by Chiu {\it et al.} for $\mathrm{CoSi_2 / TiSi_2}$ heterostructures.
We examine universal conductance fluctuations (UCFs) in mesoscopic normal-superconducting-normal (N-S-N) structures using a numerical solution of the Bogoliubov - de Gennes equation. We discuss two cases depending on the presence (``open'' structure) or absence (``closed'' structure) of quasiparticle transmission. In contrast to N-S structures, where the onset of superconductivity increases fluctuations, we find that UCFs are suppressed by superconductivity for N-S-N structures. We demonstrate that the fluctuations in ``open'' and ``closed'' structures exhibit distinct responses to an applied …
We report the observation of proximity effect in measurements performed on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) samples when electrical current is injected through the superconducting electrodes placed on the sample surface few millimeters apart from each other. Such anomalously large effect is surprising, as proximity-induced superconducting features in normal conductors hardly surpass few micrometers. The obtained results can be consistently understood, however, considering pre-existing superconducting correlations in graphite, supported by recent observations of the intrinsic global su…
We studied the proximity effect between a superconductor (Nb) and a diluted ferromagnetic alloy (CuNi) in a bilayer geometry. We measured the local density of states on top of the ferromagnetic layer, which thickness varies on each sample, with a very low temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscope. The measured spectra display a very high homogeneity. The analysis of the experimental data shows the need to take into account an additional scattering mechanism. By including in the Usadel equations the effect of the spin relaxation in the ferromagnetic alloy, we obtain a good description of the ex…
There have recently been several experiments studying induced superconductivity in semiconducting two-dimensional electron gases that are strongly coupled to thin superconducting layers, as well as probing possible topological phases supporting Majorana bound states in such setups. We show that a large band shift is induced in the semiconductor by the superconductor in this geometry, thus making it challenging to realize a topological phase. Additionally, we show that while increasing the thickness of the superconducting layer reduces the magnitude of the band shift, it also leads to a more si…
We theoretically study transport properties of nanowires with the Dresselhaus [110] spin-orbit coupling under the in-plane Zeeman potential and the proximity-induced s-wave pair potential. In the topologically nontrivial phase, the nanowire hosts the Majorana fermions at its edges and the number of the Majorana bound states is equal to the number propagating channels (Nc). When we attach a normal metal to the superconductor, such Majorana bound states penetrate into the dirty normal segment and form the Nc resonant transmission channels there. We show that chiral symmetry of the electronic sta…
The proximity effect (PE) between superconductor and confined electrons can induce the effective pairing phenomena of electrons in nanowire or quantum dot (QD). Through interpreting the PE as an exchange of virtually quasi-excitation in a largely gapped superconductor, we found that there exists another induced dynamic process. Unlike the effective pairing that mixes the QD electron states coherently, this extra process leads to dephasing of the QD. In a case study, the dephasing time is inversely proportional to the Coulomb interaction strength between two electrons in the QD. Further theoret…
This paper presents a general model for calculating the density of states and the Cooper pair potential in proximity coupled superconducting bi- and tri-layer films. The typical example of superconducting tunnel junctions is used to show that the model is working.
The design for an inductive superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor with enhanced performance, the L-SQUIPT, is presented and analyzed. The interferometer is based on a double-loop structure, where each ring comprises a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor mesoscopic Josephson weak-link and the read-out electrode is implemented in the form of a superconducting tunnel probe. Our design allows both to improve the coupling of the transistor to the external magnetic field and to increase the characteristic magnetic flux transfer functions, thereby leading to an improved ult…
Here we report the fabrication and characterization of fully superconducting quantum interference proximity transistors (SQUIPTs) based on the implementation of vanadium (V) in the superconducting loop. At low temperature, the devices show high flux-to-voltage (up to 0.52$\ \textrm{mV}/Φ_0$) and flux-to-current (above 12$\ \textrm{nA}/Φ_0$) transfer functions, with the best estimated flux sensitivity $\sim$2.6$\ μΦ_0/\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$ reached under fixed voltage bias, where $Φ_0$ is the flux quantum. The interferometers operate up to $T_\textrm{bath}\simeq$ 2 $ \textrm{K}$, with an improveme…
The superconducting proximity effect is investigated for SN double layers in a regime where the resulting transition temperature T_{c} does not depend on the mean free paths of the films and, within limits, not on the transparency of the interface. This regime includes the thin film limit and the normalized initial slope S_{sn}= (d_{s}/T_{s})|dT_{c}/dd_{n}|. The experimental results for T_{c} are compared with a numerical simulation which was recently developed in our group. The results for the SN double layers can be devided into three groups: (i) When N = Cu, Ag, Au, Mg a disagreement betwee…
An array of superconducting proximity islands has been shown to be highly tunable by electric and magnetic fields. Indeed, a small change in the electric and magnetic field can tune the system from a vortex Mott insulator to a vortex metal. This transition from localized to a non-localized state can occur as soon as the density of the superconducting vortices matches the density of the pinning sites in a non defective structure. The possibility of further modulation of non-localized superconducting states via enhancement of the superconducting order parameter or modulation of the Josephson pla…
We study self-consistently a microscopic interface between a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) and a superconductor (SC), focusing on properties related to Majorana fermion creation. For an $s$-wave SC we show that odd-in-momentum, or $p$-wave, order parameters exist for all doping levels of the QSHI and that they can be related to different spinless Cooper pair amplitudes. Despite this, the induced superconducting gap in the QSHI always retains its $s$-wave character, validating the commonly used effective model for superconductivity in a topological insulator. For a $d_{xy}$-wave SC, we sho…
We investigate the superconducting proximity effect in a clean magnetic structure consisting of two ferromagnetic layered domains with antiparallel magnetizations in contact with a superconductor. Within the quasiclassical Green's function approach we find that the penetration of the superconducting correlations into the magnetic domains can be enhanced as compared to the corresponding single domain structure. This enhancement depends on an effective exchange field which is determined by the thicknesses and the exchange fields of the two domains. The pair amplitude function oscillates spatiall…

We theoretically study the superconducting proximity effect in silicene, which features massive Dirac fermions with a tunable mass (band gap), and compute the conductance across a normal/superconductor (N/S) silicene junction, the non-local conductance of an N/S/N junction, and the supercurrent flowing in an S/N/S junction. It is demonstrated that the transport processes consisting of local and non-local Andreev reflection may be efficiently controlled via an external electric field owing to the buckled structure of silicene. In particular, we demonstrate that it is possible to obtain a fully …
The surface impedance of Nb/CuMn (superconducting/spin-glass) bilayers has been measured at 10 GHz with the parallel plate resonator technique to obtain information about the exotic behavior of the order parameter in superconducting/magnetic proximity systems. The data strongly differs from the superconducting/normal-metal case, showing the magnetic nature of the CuMn layer, which acts as a weak ferromagnet. The results are described in the framework of two models for the electrodynamics of superconducting/ferromagnetic (S/M) bilayers characterized by a proximity-coupling length scale which is…
When a ferromagnet is placed in contact with a superconductor, owing to incompatible spin order, the Cooper pairs from the superconductor cannot survive more than one or two nanometers inside the ferromagnet. This is confirmed in the measurements of ferromagnetic nickel (Ni) nanowires contacted by superconducting niobium (Nb) leads. However, when a 3 nm thick copper oxide (CuO) buffer layer made by exposing an evaporated or a sputtered 3 nm Cu film to air, is inserted between the Nb electrodes and the Ni wire, the spatial extent of the superconducting proximity range is dramatically increased …
For an s-wave superconductor/semiconductor/ferromagnetic-insulator structure, the proximity effect can induce the energy gap in the semiconductor rather than the superconducting pair potential of its microscope Hamiltonian. As a result, it is questionable to realize topological superconducting states in that structure.
We demonstrate theoretically that shining light on superconducting proximity structures controls the minigap and triplet proximity effect in normal and magnetic metals, respectively. Considering both a bilayer and Josephson junction geometry, we show that microwave irradiation with frequency $ω$ qualitatively alters the spectral properties of the system, controlling the minigap size $E_\text{mg}$ and even replacing the minigap with a strong peak of quasiparticle accumulation at zero energy when $ω=E_\text{mg}$. The interaction between light and Cooper pairs may thus open a route to active cont…
We have performed the first experiments in a superconductor - normal metal - superconductor single electron transistor in which there is an extra superconducting strip partially overlapping the normal metal island in good metal-to-metal contact. Superconducting proximity effect gives rise to current peaks at voltages below the quasiparticle threshold. We interpret these peaks in terms of the Josephson-quasiparticle process and discuss their connection with the proximity induced energy gap in the normal metal island.
Interference of proximity induced superconducting correlations in mesoscopic metallic rings is sensitive to the magnetic flux $Φ$ inside these rings. This is the reason for magnetoconductance oscillations in such systems. We detected experimentally and explained theoretically a novel effect: the phase of these oscillations can switch between 0 and $π$ depending on the resistance of intermetallic interfaces and temperature. The effect is due to a nontrivial interplay between the proximity induced enhancement of the local conductivity and the proximity induced suppression of the density of state…
Single-domain, epitaxially-grown Nb(110)/Au(111)/Nb(110) trilayers are studied in order to elucidate the superconducting proximity effect in the Au(111) layer. The critical current density, superconducting coherence length, and superconducting transition temperature, all show a non-monotonic dependence on the thickness of the Au layer. The analysis of the experimental data reasonably argues that a form of order-parameter oscillation is intrinsic to the proximity-induced Cooper pairs in the Au layer. We find that relative phase of the superconducting order parameter in the two Nb(110) layers ch…
