We explore various aspects of the motion of heavy quarks in strongly-coupled gauge theories, employing the AdS/CFT correspondence. Building on earlier work by Mikhailov, we study the dispersion relation and energy loss of an accelerating finite-mass quark in N=4 super-Yang-Mills, both in vacuum and in the presence of a thermal plasma. In the former case, we notice that the application of an external force modifies the dispersion relation. In the latter case, we find in particular that when a static heavy quark is accelerated by an external force, its rate of energy loss is initially insensitive to the plasma, and there is a delay before this rate approaches the value derived previously from the analysis of stationary or late-time configurations.
Following up on work by Herzog et al., we also consider the evolution of a quark and antiquark as they separate from one another after formation, learning how the AdS/CFT setup distinguishes between the singlet and adjoint configurations, and locating the transition to the stage where the deceleration of each particle is properly accounted for by a constant friction coefficient. Additionally, we examine the way in which the energy of a quark-antiquark pair moving jointly through the plasma scales with the quark mass. We find that the velocity-dependence of the screening length is drastically modified in the ultra-relativistic region, and is comparable with that of the transition distance mentioned above.
We discuss the effect of dynamical charged particles in U(1)^{N-1} Abelian effective theories of QCD. Screening and confinement at zero temperature are explained qualitatively. The effect of dynamically charged particle is expressed in terms of an effective action of integer electric currents. When a screening is expected, the static potential shows a flattening in the long-range region and a linear behavior in the intermediate region. We show why the screening is better observed in the Polyakov-loop correlators than in the Wilson loops. The breaking of the adjoint string is explained without …
In this paper, we systematically study the question of screening length in Abelian Chern-Simons theories. In the Abelian Higgs theory, where there are two massive poles in the gauge propagator at the tree level, we show that the coefficient of one of them becomes negligible at high temperature and that the screening length is dominantly determined by the parity violating part of the self-energy. In this theory, static magnetic fields are screened. In the fermion theory, on the other hand, the parity conserving part of the self-energy determines the screening length and static magnetic fields a…
We use the gauge/gravity correspondence to study the screening of a heavy quark-antiquark pair in various strongly coupled plasmas. Besides N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and the corresponding AdS_5 space we also study theories obtained as deformations of AdS_5, among them in particular a class of deformations solving supergravity equations of motion. We consider the dependence of the screening distance on the velocity and the orientation of the pair in the plasma. The value of the screening distance in N=4 SYM is found to be a minimum in the class of theories under consideration for all kinemati…
We show that the string tension in N=1 two-dimensional super Yang-Mills theory vanishes independently of the representation of the quark anti-quark external source. We argue that this result persists in SQCD_2 and in two-dimensional gauge theories with extended supersymmetry or in chiral invariant models with at least one massless dynamical fermion. We also compute the string tension for the massive Schwinger model, as a demonstration of the method of the calculation.
Despite the overwhelming evidence for the existence of dark energy and dark matter, their underlying fundamental physics remains unknown. This review article explores the tantalizing possibility that the dark sector includes new light degrees of freedom that mediate long-range forces on cosmological scales. To ensure consistency with laboratory and solar system tests of gravity, some screening mechanism is necessary to "hide" these degrees of freedom locally. I will focus on two broad classes of screening theories, chameleons and symmetrons, which rely respectively on the scalar field acquirin…
Many non-linear scalar field theories possess a screening mechanism that can suppress any associated fifth force in dense environments. As a result, these theories can evade local experimental tests of new forces. Chameleon-like screening, which occurs because of non-linearities in the scalar potential or the coupling to matter, is well understood around extended objects. However, many experimental tests of these theories involve objects with spatial extent much smaller than the scalar field's Compton wavelength, and which could therefore be considered point-like. In this work, we determine ho…
We study the Vainshtein screening mechanism in Horndeski theories in the presence of a scalar field $ϕ$ nonminimally and kinetically coupled to ordinary matter field. A general interacting Lagrangian describing this coupling is characterized by energy transfer $f_1$ and momentum exchange $f_2$. For a spherically symmetric configurations on top of the cosmological background, we investigate the static perturbations in linear and nonlinear regimes with respect to the scalar field perturbation. In the former regime, the parametrized post-Newtonian parameter generally deviates from unity as long a…
The Vainshtein screening mechanism relies on nonlinear interaction terms becoming dominant close to a compact source. However, theories displaying this mechanism are generally understood to be low-energy theories: it is unclear that operators emerging from UV completion do not interfere with terms inducing Vainshtein screening. In this work, we find a set of interacting massive Galileon theories that exhibit Vainshtein screening; examining potential UV completions of these theories, we determine that the screening does not survive the extension. We find that neglecting operators when integrati…
We study how the Vainshtein mechanism operates in the most general scalar-tensor theories with second-order equations of motion. The field equations of motion, which can be also applicable to most of other screening scenarios proposed in literature, are generally derived in a spherically symmetric space-time with a matter source. In the presence of a field coupling to the Ricci scalar, we clarify conditions under which the Vainshtein mechanism is at work in a weak gravitational background. We also obtain the solutions of the field equation inside a spherically symmetric body and show how they …
We study the screening length L_s of a heavy quark-antiquark pair in strongly coupled gauge theory plasmas flowing at velocity v. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we investigate, analytically, the screening length in the ultra-relativistic limit. We develop a procedure that allows us to find the scaling exponent for a large class of backgrounds. We find that for conformal theories the screening length is (boosted energy density)^{-1/d}. As examples of conformal backgrounds we study R-charged black holes and Schwarzschild-anti-deSitter black holes in (d+1)-dimensions. For non-conformal theories…
We show that, in 1+1 dimensional gauge theories, a heavy probe charge is screened by dynamical massless fermions both in the case when the source and the dynamical fermions belong to the same representation of the gauge group and, unexpectedly, in the case when the representation of the probe charge is smaller than the representation of the massless fermions. Thus, a fractionally charged heavy probe is screened by dynamical fermions of integer charge in the massless Schwinger model, and a colored probe in the fundamental representation is screened in $QCD_2$ with adjoint massless Majorana ferm…
Scalar-tensor theories are frequently only consistent with fifth force constraints in the presence of a screening mechanism, namely in order to suppress an otherwise unacceptably large coupling between the scalar and ordinary matter. Here we investigate precisely which subsets of Horndeski theories do not give rise to and/or require such a screening mechanism. We investigate these subsets in detail, deriving their form and discussing how they are restricted upon imposing additional bounds from the speed of gravitational waves, solar system tests and cosmological observables. Finally, we also i…
If constituent quarks are to emerge from QCD they must have well defined colour and be energetically favoured. After reviewing the general properties of charges in gauge theories, a method for constructing charges is presented and applied to the infra-red structure of the theory and to the interquark potential. Both of these applications supply a physical interpretation of the structures found in the construction of charges. We will see that constituent structures arise in QCD.
In Gleyzes-Langlois-Piazza-Vernizzi (GLPV) theories, it is known that the conical singularity arises at the center of a spherically symmetric body ($r=0$) in the case where the parameter $α_{{\rm H}4}$ characterizing the deviation from the Horndeski Lagrangian $L_4$ approaches a non-zero constant as $r \to 0$. We derive spherically symmetric solutions around the center in full GLPV theories and show that the GLPV Lagrangian $L_5$ does not modify the divergent property of the Ricci scalar $R$ induced by the non-zero $α_{{\rm H}4}$. Provided that $α_{{\rm H}4}=0$, curvature scalar quantities can…
We argue that screening of higher-representation color charges by gluons implies a domain structure in the vacuum state of non-abelian gauge theories, with the color magnetic flux in each domain quantized in units corresponding to the gauge group center. Casimir scaling of string tensions at intermediate distances results from random spatial variations in the color magnetic flux within each domain. The exceptional G(2) gauge group is an example rather than an exception to this picture, although for G(2) there is only one type of vacuum domain, corresponding to the single element of the gauge g…
We propose a dark energy model where a scalar field $ϕ$ has nonlinear self-interactions in the presence of a dilatonic coupling with the Ricci scalar. This belongs to a sub-class of theories beyond Horndeski, which accommodates covariant Galileons and Brans-Dicke theories as specific cases. We derive conditions under which the scalar sound speed squared $c_{\rm s}^2$ is positive from the radiation era to today. Since $c_{\rm s}^2$ remains to be smaller than the order of 1, the deviation from Horndeski theories does not cause heavy oscillations of gauge-invariant gravitational potentials. In th…
For a massive vector field with derivative self-interactions, the breaking of the gauge invariance allows the propagation of a longitudinal mode in addition to the two transverse modes. We consider generalized Proca theories with second-order equations of motion in a curved space-time and study how the longitudinal scalar mode of the vector field gravitates on a spherically symmetric background. We show explicitly that cubic-order self-interactions lead to the suppression of the longitudinal mode through the Vainshtein mechanism. Provided that the dimensionless coupling of the interaction is n…
We give a brief overview of the results obtained in arXiv:0803.3070, concerning the rate of energy loss of an accelerating quark in strongly-coupled N=4 super-Yang-Mills, both at zero and finite temperature. For phenomenological purposes, our main result is that, when a quark is created within the plasma together with its corresponding antiquark, the quark starts feeling the plasma only after the q-\bar{q} separation becomes larger than the (v-dependent) screening length, and from this point on the motion is correctly described by the analytic energy loss formula previously derived by Herzog e…
Within the landscape of modified theories of gravity, progress in understanding the behaviour of, and developing tests for, screening mechanisms has been hindered by the complexity of the field equations involved, which are nonlinear in nature and characterised by a large hierarchy of scales. This is especially true of Vainshtein screening, where the fifth force is suppressed by high-order derivative terms which dominate within a radius much larger than the size of the source, known as the Vainshtein radius. In this work, we present the numerical code $φ$enics, building on the FEniCS library, …
We study the spectra of scalar and vector mesons in four dimensional strongly coupled SQCD-like theories in the Veneziano limit. The gauge theories describe the low energy dynamics of intersecting D3 and D7-branes on the singular and deformed conifold and their strong coupling regime can be explored by means of dual fully backreacted supergravity backgrounds. The mesons we focus on are dual to fluctuations of the worldvolume gauge field on a probe D7-brane in these backgrounds. As we will comment in detail, the general occurrence of various UV pathologies in the D3-D7 set-ups under study, forc…
We study a new screening mechanism which is present in Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI)-like theories. A scalar field with a DBI-like Lagrangian is minimally coupled to matter. In the vicinity of sufficiently dense sources, non-linearities in the scalar dominate and result in an approximately constant acceleration on a test particle, thereby suppressing the scalar force relative to gravity. Unlike generic P(X) theories, screening happens within the regime of validity of the effective field theory, thanks to the DBI symmetry. This symmetry also allows the removal of a constant field gradient, like in ga…
Gravitational theories differing from General Relativity may explain the accelerated expansion of the Universe without a cosmological constant. However, to pass local gravitational tests, a "screening mechanism" is needed to suppress, on small scales, the fifth force driving the cosmological acceleration. We consider the simplest of these theories, i.e. a scalar-tensor theory with first-order derivative self-interactions, and study isolated (static and spherically symmetric) non-relativistic and relativistic stars. We produce screened solutions and use them as initial data for non-linear numer…
In the theories of generalized modified gravity, the acceleration equation is generally fourth order. So it is hard to analyze the evolution of the Universe. In this paper, we present a class of generalized modified gravity theories which have the acceleration equation of second order derivative. Then both the cosmic evolution and the weak-field limit of the theories are easily investigated. We find that not only the Big-bang singularity problem but also the current cosmic acceleration problem could be easily dealt with.
We have conducted fully relativistic simulations in a class of scalar-tensor theories with derivative self-interactions and screening of local scales. By using high-resolution shock-capturing methods and a non-vanishing shift vector, we have managed to avoid issues plaguing similar attempts in the past. We have first confirmed recent results by ourselves in spherical symmetry, obtained with an approximate approach and pointing at a partial breakdown of the screening in black-hole collapse. Then, we considered the late inspiral and merger of binary neutron stars. We found that screening tends t…
We investigate neutron star solutions in scalar-tensor theories of gravity with first-order derivative self-interactions in the action and in the matter coupling. We assess the robustness of the kinetic screening mechanism present in these theories against general conformal couplings to matter. The latter include ones leading to the classical Damour-Esposito-Farèse scalarization, as well as ones depending on the kinetic term of the scalar field. We find that kinetic screening always prevails over scalarization, and that kinetic couplings with matter enhance the suppression of scalar gradients …
We briefly review the problems and prospects of the standard lore of dark energy and notice that the cosmological constant problems are often over emphasized. In order to keep the discussion pedagogical aimed at a wider audience, we have avoided technical complications in several places and resorted to heuristic arguments based on physical perceptions. We presented underlying ideas of modified theories based upon chameleon mechanism and Vainshtein screening. We have given a lucid illustration of recently investigated ghost free non linear massive gravity. Again we have sacrificed rigor and con…
Low-energy effective field theories containing a light scalar field are used extensively in cosmology, but often there is a tension between embedding such theories in a healthy UV completion and achieving a phenomenologically viable screening mechanism in the IR. Here, we identify the range of interaction couplings which allow for a smooth resummation of classical non-linearities (necessary for kinetic/Vainshtein-type screening), and compare this with the range allowed by unitarity, causality and locality in the underlying UV theory. The latter region is identified using positivity bounds on t…
We prove that certain screening operators in conformal field theory obey the algebra relations of a corresponding Nichols algebra with diagonal braiding. Our result proves in particular a long-standing expectation that the Borel parts of small quantum groups appear as the algebra of screening operators. The proof is based on a novel, intimate relation between Hopf algebras, vertex algebras and a class of multivalued analytic special functions, which are generalizations of Selberg integrals. We prove that the zeroes of these special functions correspond to the algebra relations of the respectiv…
We review recent progress on cosmological issues and theoretical properties of modified gravity theories. In particular, we explicitly explore the conformal transformation, the Starobinsky inflation, and a unified scenario of inflation and late time acceleration in $F(R)$ gravity and $F(T)$ gravity (extended teleparallel gravity). Furthermore, we examine neutron stars and the hyperon problem in $F(R)$ gravity. Moreover, for loop quantum cosmology (LQC), the natures of finite-time future singularities in $F(T)$ gravity are presented. In addition, we investigate $F(T)$ gravity theories from the …
We discuss how in certain theories of spacetime admitting a maximal proper acceleration Hawking radiation does not completely evaporate the black hole. The black hole remnant's mass depends on the inverse of the maximal acceleration. Furthermore, as a consequence of a duality between the minimum mass that a Schwarzschild black hole can have in such spacetimes and the maximal acceleration, we show that in certain theories with a maximal acceleration there must be an upper uniform bounds on the value of the force that can be exerted on test particles.
We compute the one-loop effective potential for the Polyakov loop on $S^3 times S^1$ for an asymptotically free gauge theory of arbitrary group $G$ and a generic matter content. We apply this result to study the phase structures of $G_2$, SO(N) and $Sp(2N)$ gauge theories which turn out to be in qualitative agreement with the results of lattice calculations. On $S^3 \times S^1$, at zero temperature, the Polyakov loop is zero for kinematical reasons. For small but non-zero temperature, the Polyakov loop is still zero if the gauge theory has an unbroken center, while it acquires a small vacuum e…
We study the screening length of a heavy quark-antiquark pair in strongly coupled gauge theory plasmas flowing at velocity v following a proposal by Liu, Rajagopal, and Wiedemann. We analyze the screening length as the direction of the plasma winds vary. To leading order in v, this angle-dependence can be studied analytically for many theories by extending our previous formalism. We show that the screening length is locally a minimum (maximum) when the pair is perpendicular (parallel) to the plasma winds, which has been observed for the N=4 plasma. Also, we compare AdS/CFT results with weak co…
We discuss some aspects of Liouville field theory, starting from operator equation of motion in presence of two screening charges and re-derive the dual zero mode Schwinger Dyson equations for the two screening charges from the path integral. Using functional methods we show the familiar pole structure of Liouville correlation function using the partition function. Next we discuss a generalized structure of the correlation functions obtained from the zero mode functional equations. From this structure we infer the use of the Barnes double Gamma functions to construct a part of the denominator …
We present measurements of the radial gravitational acceleration around isolated galaxies, comparing the expected gravitational acceleration given the baryonic matter with the observed gravitational acceleration, using weak lensing measurements from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey. These measurements extend the radial acceleration relation (RAR) by 2 decades into the low-acceleration regime beyond the outskirts of the observable galaxy. We compare our RAR measurements to the predictions of two modified gravity (MG) theories: MOND and Verlinde's emergent gravity. We find that …
There are important conjectures about logarithmic conformal field theories (LCFT), which are constructed as kernel of screening operators acting on the vertex algebra of the rescaled root lattice of a finite-dimensional semisimple complex Lie algebra. In particular their representation theory should be equivalent to the representation theory of an associated small quantum group. This article solves the case of the rescaled root lattice $B_n/\sqrt{2}$ as a first working example beyond $A_1/\sqrt{p}$. We discuss the kernel of short screening operators, its representations and graded characters. …
We study baryons in SU(N) gauge theories at finite temperature according to the gauge/string correspondence based on IIB string theory. The baryon is constructed out of D5 brane and $N$ fundamental strings to form a color singlet $N$-quark bound state. At finite temperature and in the deconfining phase, we could find $k(<N)$-quark ``baryons''. Thermal properties of such $k$-quark baryons and also of the $N$-quark baryon are examined. We study the temperature dependence of color screening distance and Debye length of the baryon of $k$-quark and $N$-quark. We also estimate the melting temperatur…
This paper is concerned with theories of gravity that contain a scalar coupled both conformally and disformally to matter through the metric. By systematically deriving the non-relativistic limit, it is shown that no new non-linear screening mechanisms are present beyond the Vainshtein mechanism and chameleon-like screening. If one includes the cosmological expansion of the universe, disformal effects that are usually taken to be absent can be present in the solar system. When the conformal factor is absent, fifth-forces can be screened on all scales when the cosmological field is slowly-rolli…
We study correlation functions of spatially separated static quark-antiquark pairs in (2+1)-flavor QCD in order to investigate onset and nature of color screening at high temperatures. We perform lattice calculations in a wide temperature range, $140 \le T \le 5814\,{\rm MeV}$, using the highly improved staggered quark action and several lattice spacings to control discretization effects. By comparing at high temperatures our lattice results to weak-coupling calculations as well as to the zero temperature result for the energy of a static quark-antiquark pair, we observe that color screening s…
The evidence of the acceleration of universe at present time has lead to investigate modified theories of gravity and alternative theories of gravity, which are able to explain acceleration from a theoretical viewpoint without the need of introducing dark energy. In this paper we study alternative gravitational theories defined by Lagrangians which depend on general functions of the Ricci scalar invariant in minimal interaction with matter, in view of their possible cosmological applications. Structural equations for the spacetimes described by such theories are solved and the corresponding fi…
The existence of future horizons in spacetime geometries poses serious problems for string theory and quantum field theories. The observation that the expansion of the universe is accelerating has recently been shown to lead to a crisis for the mathematical formalism of string and M-theories, since the existence of a future horizon for an eternally accelerating universe does not allow the formulation of physical S-matrix observables. Postulating that the speed of light varies in an expanding universe in the future as well as in the past can eliminate future horizons, allowing for a consistent …
In this note, we consider confining gauge theories in $D=2,3,4$ defined by $S^2$ or $T^2$ compactification of higher-dimensional conformal field theories with gravity duals. We investigate the behavior of these theories on de Sitter spacetime as a function of the Hubble parameter. We find that in each case, the de Sitter vacuum state of the field theory (defined by Euclidian continuation from a sphere) undergoes a deconfinement transition as the Hubble parameter is increased past a critical value. In each case, the corresponding critical de Sitter temperature is smaller than the corresponding …
Many candidate fundamental theories contain scalar fields that can acquire spacetime-varying expectation values in a cosmological context. Such scalars typically obey Lorentz-violating effective dispersion relations. We illustrate this fact within a simple supergravity model that also exhibits the observed late-time cosmological acceleration and implies varying electromagnetic couplings.
Acceleration as a circular motion along an imaginary circle: Kubo-Martin-Schwinger condition for accelerating field theories in imaginary-time formalism
We study several observables related to heavy quarks in strongly coupled plasmas using the gauge/gravity correspondence. Besides the AdS_5 space dual to N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory we consider large classes of theories obtained from various deformations of the AdS_5 space. Among them are theories that solve equations of motion of a 5-dimensional Einstein-Hilbert-scalar action. Specifically, we calculate the screening distance of a heavy quark-antiquark pair moving at constant velocity through the plasma, the running coupling defined via the free energy of such a static pair, and the e…
We explore the cosmological solutions of classes of non-linear bigravity theories. These theories are defined by effective four-dimensional Lagrangians describing the coupled dynamics of two metric tensors, and containing, in the linearized limit, both a massless graviton and an ultralight one. We focus on two paradigmatic cases: the case where the coupling between the two metrics is given by a Pauli-Fierz-type mass potential, and the case where this coupling derives from five-dimensional brane constructions. We find that cosmological evolutions in bigravity theories can be described in terms …
We consider the reconstruction technique in theories with a single or multiple (phantom and/or canonical) scalar fields. With the help of several examples, it is demonstrated explicitly that the universe expansion history, unifying early-time inflation and late-time acceleration, can be realized in scalar-tensor gravity. This is generalized to the theory of a scalar field coupled non-minimally to the curvature and to a Brans-Dicke-like theory. Different examples of unification of inflation with cosmic acceleration, in which de Sitter, phantom, and quintessence type fields play the fundamental …
We study the constrained Ostrogradski-Hamilton framework for the equations of motion provided by mechanical systems described by second-order derivative actions with a linear dependence in the accelerations. We stress out the peculiar features provided by the surface terms arising for this type of theories and we discuss some important properties for this kind of actions in order to pave the way for the construction of a well defned quantum counterpart by means of canonical methods. In particular, we analyse in detail the constraint structure for these theories and its relation to the inherent…
We develop a constructive procedure for arriving at the Hamilton-Jacobi framework for the so-called affine in acceleration theories by analysing the canonical constraint structure. We find two scenarios in dependence of the order of the emerging equations of motion. By properly defining generalized brackets, the non-involutive constraints that originally arose, in both scenarios, may be removed so that the resulting involutive Hamiltonian constraints ensure integrability of the theories and, at the same time, lead to the right dynamics in the reduced phase space. In particular, when we have se…
We consider a modified gravity theory, f(R)=R-a/R^n+bR^m, in the metric formulation, which has been suggested to produce late time acceleration in the Universe, whilst satisfying local fifth-force constraints. We investigate the parameter range for this theory, considering the regimes of early and late-time acceleration, Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and fifth-force constraints. We conclude that it is difficult to find a unique range of parameters for consistency of this theory.
We establish an extended version of the modified Sáez-Ballester (SB) scalar-tensor theory in arbitrary dimensions whose energy momentum tensor as well as potential are pure geometrical quantities. This scenario emerges by means of two scalar fields (one is present in the SB theory and the other is associated with the extra dimension) which widens the scope of the induced-matter theory. Moreover, it bears a close resemblance to the standard Sáez-Ballester scalar-tensor theory, as well as other alternative theories to general relativity, whose construction includes either a minimally or a non-mi…
