We describe the first observations on the time-dependent dissipation when the drive level of a torsional oscillator containing solid He-4 is abruptly changed. The relaxation of dissipation in solid He-4 shows rich dynamical behavior including exponential and logarithmic time-dependent decays, hysteresis, and memory effects.

Critical velocities and the effect of steady and oscillating rotations on solid He4

We apply our recently developed model of a Bose condensate of quantum kink wave in solid He4 to understand recent torsional oscillator experimental results of the citical velocities and the effect of the steady and oscillating rotations at around 0.1 degree K. When the D.C. rotation is present we find a decrease of the Q factor given by $Q^{-1} \propto f_{sf}\times Ω_{D}/ω_{TO}$ where $f_{sf}$ is the superfluid fraction; $Ω_{D}$, the D. Frequency Dependence and Dissipation in the Dynamics of Solid Helium

Torsional oscillator experiments on solid 4He show frequency changes which suggest mass decoupling, but the onset is broad and is accompanied by a dissipation peak. We have measured the elastic shear modulus over a broad frequency range, from 0.5 Hz to 8 kHz, and observe similar behavior - stiffening and a dissipation peak. These features are associated with a dynamical crossover in a thermally activated relaxation process in a disordered system rather than a true phase transition. If there is a transition in the DC response, e.g. to a supersolid state, it must occur below 55 mK.

Annealing in solid $^4$He

We have used a torsional oscillator with square cross section and a resonance frequency of 185 Hz to confirm the nonclassical rotational inertia (NCRI) discovered by Kim and Chan\cite{1,2}. We have also found a strong correlation between the NCRI signal and a high dissipation Q$^{-1}$ of 4 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ of the oscillation above the transition temperature. Observation of Classical Rotational Inertia and Nonclassical Supersolid Signals in Solid 4He below 250 mK

We have confirmed the existence, as first reported by Kim and Chan, of a supersolid state in solid 4He at temperatures below 250 mK. We have employed a torsional oscillator cell with a square cross section to insure a locking of the solid to the oscillating cell. We find that NCRI signal is not a universal property of solid 4He, but can be eliminated through an annealing of the solid helium sample. This result has important implications for the nature of the supersolid state.

Effects of $^3$He Impurity on Solid $^4$He Studied by Compound Torsional Oscillator

Frequency shifts and dissipations of a compound torsional oscillator induced by solid $^4$He samples containing $^3$He impurity concentrations ($x_3$ = 0.3, 3, 6, 12 and 25 in units of 10$^{-6}$) have been measured at two resonant mode frequencies ($f_1$ = 493 and $f_2$ = 1164 Hz) at temperatures ($T$) between 0.02 and 1.1 K. The fractional frequency shifts of the $f_1$ mode were much smaller than those of the $f_2$ mode. Possible vortex fluid to supersolid transition in solid $^4$He below about 75 mK

A detailed torsional oscillator (TO) study on a stable solid 4He sample at 49 bar with To = 0.5K, is reported to T below the dissipation peak at Tp . We find hysteretic behavior starting below Tc = about 75 mK, in period shift, as well as in dissipation, with changes of AC excitation amplitude Vac . The derived difference of non-linear rotational susceptibility DeltaNLRS(T)hys across the hysteresis loop under a systematic condition is analyzed as a function of Vac and T .
