The electronic and magnetic properties of TbMnO3 leading to its ferroelectric (FE) polarization were investigated on the basis of relativistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In agreement with experiment, we show that the spin-spiral plane of TbMnO3 can be either the bc- or ab-plane, but not the ac-plane. As for the mechanism of FE polarization, our work reveals that the "pure electronic" model by Katsura, Nagaosa and Balatsky (KNB) is inadequate in predicting the absolute direction of FE polarization. For the ab-plane spin-spiral state of TbMnO3, the direction of FE polarization predicted by the KNB model is opposite to that predicted by DFT calculations. In determining the magnitude and the absolute direction of FE polarization in spin-spiral states, it is found crucial to consider the displacements of the ions from their ecntrosymmetric positions.
Magneto-electric multiferroics exemplified by TbMnO3 possess both magnetic and ferroelectric long-range order. The magnetic order is mostly understood, whereas the nature of the ferroelectricity has remained more elusive. Competing models proposed to explain the ferroelectricity are associated respectively with charge transfer and ionic displacements. Exploiting the magneto-electric coupling, we use an electric field to produce a single magnetic domain state, and a magnetic field to induce ionic displacements. Under these conditions, interference charge-magnetic X-ray scattering arises, encodi…
We show the first-principles evidence of a hitherto unreported type of ferroelectricity with ultra-long ion-displacement in sodium and potassium hydroxides. Even a small amount of proton vacancies can completely change the mode of proton-transfer from intra-unitcell to trans-unitcell, giving rise to multiferroic soliton with mobile magnetism and a tremendous polarization that can be orders of magnitude higher compared with most perovskite ferroelectrics. Their vertical polarizations of thin-film are robust against depolarizing field, rendering various designs of 2D ferroelectric field-transist…
We investigate the crystal structure in multiferroic tetragonal perovskite Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$ with high accuracy of the order of 10$^{-3}$ Angstrom for an atomic displacement. The large atomic displacement for Mn ion from the centerosymmetric position, comparable with the off-centering distortion in the tetragonal ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$, is observed in the ferroelectric phase ($T_\mathrm{N}$ $\leq$ $T$ $\leq$ $T_\mathrm{C}$). In stark contrast, in the multiferroic phase ($T$ $\leq$ $T_\mathrm{N}$), the atomic displacement for Mn ion is suppressed, but those for O ions are enlarged. T…
We present a unique example of giant magnetoelectric effect in a conventional multiferroic HoMnO3, where polarization is very large (~56 mC/m2) and the ferroelectric transition temperature is higher than the magnetic ordering temperature by an order. We attribute the uniqueness of the giant magnetoelectric effect to the ferroelectricity induced entirely by the off-center displacement of rare earth ions with large magnetic moments. This finding suggests a new avenue to design multiferroics with large polarization and higher ferroelectric transition temperature as well as large magnetoelectric e…
We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements that provide a distinct dynamical "fingerprint" for the multiferroic ground state of 3.5% Ga-doped CuFeO_2. The complex ground state is stabilized by the displacement of the oxygen atoms, which are also responsible for the multiferroic coupling predicted by Arima. By comparing the observed and calculated spectrum of spin excitations, we conclude that the magnetic ground state is a distorted screw-type spin configuration that requires a mechanism for magnetoelectric coupling different from the generally accepted spin-current model.
Multiferroics with coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism have been pursued for decades. However, their magnetoelectric performances remain limited due to the common trade-off between ferroelectricity and magnetism. Here, a family of nitride perovskites is proposed as multiferroics with prominent physical properties and nontrivial mechanisms. Taking GdWN$_3$ as a prototype, our first-principles calculations found that its perovskite phases own large polarizations (e.g. $111.3$ $μ$C/cm$^2$ for the $R3c$ phase) and a magnetic moment $7$ $μ_{\rm B}$/Gd$^{3+}$. More interestingly, its fer…
We show that electronic correlations decimate the intrinsic ferroelectric polarization of the recently discovered class of multiferroic manganites RMn$_2$O$_5$, where R is a rare earth element. Such is manifest from {\it ab initio} bandstructure computations that account for the strong local Coulomb interactions between the manganese 3d electrons --the root of magnetism in these materials. When including these the computed electronic, magnetic and lattice structure of multiferroic HoMn$_2$O$_5$ results in an amplitude and direction of polarization that is in accordance with experiment. The mic…
Ab initio calculations of the electric polarization of correlation-driven insulating materials, namely Mott insulators, have not been possible so far. Using a combination of density functional theory and dynamical-mean-field theory we study the electric polarization of the Mott insulator Sr$_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$. We predict a ferroelectric polarization of $\simeq 16.5 μC/cm^2$ in the high temperature paramagnetic phase and recover the measured value of $\simeq 13.3 μC/cm^2$ in the low temperature antiferromagnetic phase. Our calculations reveal that the driving force for the ferroelectric…
Low-energy magnon excitations in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ were measured in detail as a function of temperature around several Brillouin zone centers by inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals. Unique features around 1 meV are directly associated with the interplay of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a small single-ion anisotropy. The temperature dependence of these and the exchange interactions were determined by fitting the measured magnon dispersion with spin-wave calculations. The spectra best fits an easy-axis type magnetic anisotropy and the deduced exchange and…
We used Raman scattering to study the lattice and magnetic excitations in the hexagonal HoMnO3 single crystals. The E2 phonon mode at 237 cm-1 is affected by the magnetic order. This mode is related to the displacement of Mn and O ions in a-b plane and modulates the Mn-O-Mn bond angles in a-b plane and the in-plane Mn-Mn superexchange interaction. The mode at 269 cm-1 associated to the displacement of the apical Ho3+ ions along the c direction presents an abrupt change of slope at TN showing that the role of the rare earth ions can not be neglected in the magnetic transition. We have identifie…
Using first principles calculations, we study the microscopic origin of ferroelectricity (FE) induced by magnetic order in the orthorhombic HoMnO3. We obtain the largest ferroelectric polarization observed in the whole class of improper magnetic ferroelectrics to date. We find that the two proposed mechanisms for FE in multiferroics, lattice- and electronic-based, are simultaneously active in this compound: a large portion of the ferroelectric polarization arises due to quantum-mechanical effects of electron orbital polarization, in addition to the conventional polar atomic displacements. An i…
We report experimental evidence for pressure instabilities in the model multiferroic BiFeO3 and namely reveal two structural phase transitions around 3 GPa and 10 GPa by using diffraction and far-infrared spectroscopy at a synchrotron source. The intermediate phase from 3 to 9 GPa crystallizes in a monoclinic space group, with octahedra tilts and small cation displacements. When the pressure is further increased the cation displacements (and thus the polar character) of BiFeO3 is suppressed above 10 GPa. The above 10 GPa observed non-polar orthorhombic Pnma structure is in agreement with recen…
We have elucidated the spin, lattice, charge and orbital coupling mechanism underlying the multiferroic character in tensile strained EuTiO3 films. Symmetry determined by oxygen octahedral tilting shapes the hybridization between the Eu 4f and Ti 3d orbitals and this inhibits predicted Ti displacement proper ferroelectricity. Instead, phonon softening emerges at low temperatures within the pseudo-cube (110) plane, orthogonal to the anticipated ferroelectric polarization symmetry. Additionally, the magnetic anisotropy is determined by orbital distortion through hybridization between the Ti 3d a…
We present a study based on several advanced First-Principles methods, of the recently synthesized PbNiO3 [J. Am. Chem. Soc 133, 16920 (2011)], a rhombohedral antiferromagnetic insulator which crystallizes in the highly distorted R3c crystal structure. We find this compound electrically polarized, with a very large electric polarization of about 100 (\muC/cm)^2, thus even exceeding the polarization of well-known BiFeO3. PbNiO3 is a proper ferroelectric, with polarization driven by large Pb-O polar displacements along the [111] direction. Contrarily to naive expectations, a definite ionic charg…
We report on structural, magnetic, dielectric, and thermodynamic properties of (Eu:Y)MnO3 for Y doping levels 0 <= x < 1. This system resembles the multiferroic perovskite manganites RMnO3 (with R= Gd, Dy, Tb) but without the interference of magnetic contributions of the 4f-ions. In addition, it offers the possibility to continuously tune the influence of the A-site ionic radii. For small concentrations x <= 0.1 we find a canted antiferromagnetic and paraelectric groundstate. For higher concentrations x <= 0.3 ferroelectric polarization coexists with the features of a long wavelength incommens…
Pb(Fe$_{0.5}$Nb$_{0.5}$)O$_3$ (PFN), one of the few relaxor multiferroic systems, has a $G$-type antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N$ = 143 K and a ferroelectric transition at $T_C$ = 385 K. By using high-resolution neutron-diffraction experiments and a total scattering technique, we paint a comprehensive picture of the long- and short-range structures of PFN: (i) a clear sign of short-range structural correlation above $T_C$, (ii) no sign of the negative thermal expansion behavior reported in a previous study, and (iii) clearest evidence thus far of magnetoelectric coupling below $T_N$. We c…
Recently, CuO has been proposed as a potential multiferroic material with high transition temperature. Competing models based on spin current and ionic displacements are invoked to explain ferroelectricity in CuO. The theoretical model predicting ionic displacement suggested that the shift in ions is essentially along b-axis with very small amplitude (~10-5 Å). Experimentally detecting displacements of such a small amplitude in a particular direction is extremely challenging. Through our detailed polarized Raman spectroscopy study on epitaxial film of CuO, we have validated the theoretical stu…
Orthorhombically distorted perovskite manganites, RMnO3 with R being a trivalent rare-earth ion, exhibit a variety of magnetic and electric phases including multiferroic (i.e. concurrently magnetic and ferroelectric) phases and fascinating magnetoelectric phenomena. We theoretically study the phase diagram of RMnO3 by constructing a microscopic spin model, which includes not only the superexchange interaction but also the single-ion anisotropy (SIA) and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI). Analysis of this model using the Monte-Carlo method reproduces the experimental phase diagrams as …
Using THz spectroscopy, we show that the spin-wave spectrum of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ in its high-field canted antiferromagnetic state is well described by a spin model that violates rhombohedral symmetry. We demonstrate that the monoclinic distortion of the canted antiferromagnetic state is induced by the single-ion magnetoelastic coupling between the lattice and the two nearly anti-parallel spins. The revised spin model for BiFeO$_3$ contains two new single-ion anisotropy terms that violate rhombohedral symmetry and depend on the direction of the magnetic field.
We present a microscopic theory that shows the importance of spin-orbit coupling in perovskite compounds with heavy ions. In BiFeO3 (BFO) the spin-orbit coupling at the bismuth ion sites results in a special kind of magnetic anisotropy that is linear in the applied E-field. This interaction can convert the cycloid ground state into a homogeneous antiferromagnet, with a weak ferromagnetic moment whose orientation can be controlled by the E-field direction. Remarkably, the E-field control of magnetism occurs without poling the ferroelectric moment, providing a pathway for reduced energy dissipat…
We argue for a recently observed puzzling multiferroic behavior in s=1/2 1D chain cuprate LiCu2O2 with edge-shared arrangement of CuO4 plaquettes and incommensurate spiral spin ordering can be consistently explained if one takes into account the nonrelativistic exchange-induced electric polarization on the Cu2+ centers substituting for the positions native for the Cu1+ ions. These substituent centers are proved to be an effective probe of the spin incommensurability and magnetic field effects.
The coexisting magnetic and ferroelectric orders in multiferroic materials give rise to a handful of novel magnetoelectric phenomena, such as the absorption difference for the opposite propagation directions of light called the non-reciprocal directional dichroism (NDD). Usually these effects are restricted to low temperature, where the multiferroic phase develops. In this paper we report the observation of NDD in the paramagnetic phase of Sr2CoSi2O7 up to temperatures more than ten times higher than its Néel temperature (7 K) and in fields up to 30 T. The magnetically induced polarization and…
In this paper we investigated the influence of the rare-earth ionic radii on the spin-phonon coupling in RE2NiMnO6 double perovskites by Raman spectroscopy. Spin-phonon in dense Nd2NiMnO6 and Gd2NiMnO6 ceramics were investigated by Raman spectroscopy at low temperatures. The magnitude of the coupling observed in comparison with other isostructural compounds shows that it is not influenced by the rare-earth ionic radius, as well as the deviation of the position of the stretching phonon in the ferromagnetic phase with relation to the anharmonic contributions follows a power law.
The recently observed multiferroic behavior in the s=1/2 chain cuprate LiVCuO_4 (LiCuVO_4) with edge-shared CuO_4 plaquettes and helical spin ordering does not agree with the existing theories such as a spin-current scenario. We argue that the effect can be consistently explained, if the exchange-induced electric polarization on the out-of-chain Cu^2+ centers substituting for Li-ions in LiVCuO_4 is taken into account. These substituent centers are proved to be an effective probe of the spin incommensurability and the magnetic field effects.
The ground-state structural and electronic properties of ferroelectric BiFeO$_3$ are calculated using density functional theory within the local spin-density approximation and the LSDA+U method. The crystal structure is computed to be rhombohedral with space group $R3c$, and the electronic structure is found to be insulating and antiferromagnetic, both in excellent agreement with available experiments. A large ferroelectric polarization of 90-100 $μ$C/cm$^2$ is predicted, consistent with the large atomic displacements in the ferroelectric phase and with recent experimental reports, but differi…
On the basis of our previous studies of magnetoelectric ordering of BiFeO3, TbMnO3, TbMn2O5 and BiMn2O5 we formulate the crystal chemistry criteria for the search of multiferroics and reveal potential multiferroics Pb2Cu(OH)4Cl2, Pb5Cr3F19, Mn(SeO3){\dot}H2O and BiPbSr2MnO6 each containing the ion with a lone pair.
The electronic structures of multiferroic oxides of Ba(1-x)Bi(x)Ti(0.9)Fe(0.1)O(3) (0 < x < 0.12) have been investigated by employing photoemission spectroscopy and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The measured Fe and Ti 2p XAS spectra show that Ti ions are in the Ti4+ states for all x and that Fe ions are Fe2+-Fe3+ mixed-valent for x > 0. The valence states of Fe ions are found to be nearly trivalent for x=0, and decreases with increasing x from being nearly trivalent (v(Fe)~ 3) for x=0 to v(Fe)~ 2.6 for x=0.12. The valence states of both Ti and Ba ions do not change for all x < 0.12…
We propose a model for the pair of electromagnon excitations observed in the class of multiferroic materials {\it R}MnO$_3$ ({\it R} is a rare-earth ion). The model is based on a harmonic cycloid ground state interacting with a zone-edge magnon and its twin excitation separated in momentum space by two times the cycloid wave vector. The pair of electromagnons is activated by cross coupling between magnetostriction and spin-orbit interactions. Remarkably, the spectral weight of the twin electromagnon is directly related to the presence of a magnetically induced oscillatory polarization in the g…
Local structural measurements have been performed on hexagonal HoMnO3 in order to ascertain the specific changes in bond distances which accompany magnetic ordering transitions. The transition from paramagnetic to the antiferromagetic (noncollinear) phase near ~70 K is dominated by changes in the a-b plane Mn-Mn bond distances. The spin rotation transition near ~40 K involves both Mn-Mn and nearest neighbor Ho-Mn interactions while the low temperature transition below 10 K involves all interactions, Mn-Mn, Ho-Mn (nearest and next nearest) and Ho-Ho correlations. These changes in bond distances…
The magnetic interaction between rare-earth and Fe ions in hexagonal rare-earth ferrites (h-REFeO3), may amplify the weak ferromagnetic moment on Fe, making these materials more appealing as multiferroics. To elucidate the interaction strength between the rare-earth and Fe ions as well as the magnetic moment of the rare-earth ions, element specific magnetic characterization is needed. Using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we have studied the ferrimagnetism in h-YbFeO3 by measuring the magnetization of Fe and Yb separately. The results directly show anti-alignment of magnetization of Yb and …
We discuss relative roles played by the magnetic inversion symmetry breaking and the ferroelectric (FE) atomic displacements in the multiferroic state of YMnO3. For these purposes we derive a realistic low-energy model, using results of first-principles calculations and experimental parameters of the crystal structure. Then, we solve this model in the Hartree-Fock approximation. We argue that the multiferroic state in YMnO3 has a magnetic origin, and the centrosymmetric Pbnm structure is formally sufficient for explaining details of the noncentrosymmetric magnetic ground state. The relativisti…
The Haldane spin-chain compound, Tb2BaNiO5, with two antiferromagnetic transitions, one at T1=63K, and the other at T2=25K, has been recently shown by us to be an exotic multiferroic below T2. Here, we report the results of our investigations of Sr doping at the Ba site by magnetization, heat-capacity, magnetoelectric (MDE), and pyrocurrent measurements. An intriguing finding, which we stress, is that the ferroelectricity is lost even for a doping level of 10 atomic percent, though magnetic ordering prevails. The doped specimens however retain significant magnetodielectric behaviour, but with …
We summarize the existing experimental data on electromagnons in multiferroic RMn2O5 compounds, where R denotes a rare earth ion, Y or Bi, and discuss a realistic microscopic model of these materials based on assumption that the microscopic mechanism of magnetically-induced ferroelectricity and electromagnon absorption relies entirely on the isotropic Heisenberg exchange and magnetostrictive coupling of spins to a polar lattice mode and does not involve relativistic effects. This model explains many magnetic and optical properties of RMn2O5 manganites, such as the spin re-orientation transitio…
We have successfully synthesized three quasi-2D geometrically frustrated magnetic compounds (α-MCr_2O_4, M=Ca, Sr, Ba) using the spark-plasma-sintering technique. All these members of the α-MCr_2O_4 family consist of the stacking planar triangular lattices of Cr$^{3+}$ spins (${\rm S}=3/2$), separated by non-magnetic alkaline earth ions. Their corresponding magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, dielectric permittivity and ferroelectric polarization are systematically investigated. A long-range magnetic ordering arises below the Néel temperature (around 40K) in each member of the α-MCr_2O_4 f…
The electric polarization and its magnetic origins in multiferroic RMn2O5, where R is rare-earth ion, are still issues under debate. In this work, the temperature-dependent electric polarization of DyMn2O5, the most attractive member of this RMn2O5 family, is investigated using the pyroelectric current method upon varying endpoint temperature of the electric cooling, plus the positive-up-negative-down (PUND) technique. It is revealed that DyMn2O5 at low temperature does exhibit the unusual ferrielectricity rather than ferroelectricity, characterized by two interactive and anti-parallel ferroel…
Magnetoelectric phase diagrams of the perovskite manganites, Eu1-xYxMnO3 and Gd1-xTbxMnO3, are theoretically studied. We first construct a microscopic model, and then analyze the model using the Monte-Carlo method. We reproduce the diagrams, which contain two different multiferroic states, i.e., the ab-plane spin cycloid with electric polarization P//a and the bc-plane spin cycloid with P//c. We reveal that their competition originates from a conflict between the single-ion anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction, which is controlled by the second-neighbor spin exchanges enhanced b…
The origin of the spiral spin-order in perovskite multiferroic manganites $R$MnO$_{3}$ ($RE=$ Tb or Dy) is here investigated using a two $e_{\rm g}$-orbitals double-exchange model. Our main result is that the experimentally observed spiral phase can be stabilized by introducing a relatively weak next-nearest-neighbor superexchange coupling ($\sim10%$ of the nearest-neighbor superexchange). Moreover, the Jahn-Teller lattice distortion is also shown to be essential to obtain a realistic spiral period. Supporting our conclusions, the generic phase diagram of undoped perovskite manganites is obtai…
We measured the temperature dependent infrared reflectivity spectra of TbMnO3 with the electric field of light polarized along each of the three crystallographic axes. We analyzed the effect, on the phonon spectra, of the different phase transitions occurring in this material. We show that the antiferromagnetic transition at TN renormalizes the phonon parameters along the three directions. Our data indicate that the electromagnon, observed along the a direction, has an important contribution to the building of the dielectric constant. Only one phonon, observed along the c-axis, has anomalies a…
We study magnetic and multiferroic behavior in Ca$_3$Co$_{2-x}$Mn$_{x}$O$_6$ ($x \sim$0.97) by high-field measurements of magnetization ($M$), magnetostriction ($L$($H$)/$L$), electric polarization ($P$), and magnetocaloric effect. This study also gives insight into the zero and low magnetic field magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms. We measured $M$ and $Δ$$L$/$L$ up to pulsed magnetic fields of 92 T, and determined the saturation moment and field. On the controversial topic of the spin states of Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ ions, we find evidence for $S$ = 3/2 spins for both…
The unusual magnetoelectric effects observed in the multiferroic phase arising below TN=6.7K in Ba2CoGe2O7 (BCG) are related to the spontaneous toroidal moment existing in this compound. The transition to the multiferroic state, which involves spontaneous magnetization, polarization and toroidal moment gives rise to spontaneous toroidic effects. These effects produce specific contributions to the spontaneous polarization and magnetization under applied magnetic or electric fields which provide indirect indications of the existence and role of the toroidal moment in multiferroic materials. The …
We use a group theoretical approach to enumerate the possible couplings between magnetism and ferroelectric polarisation in the parent $Pm\bar{3}m$ perovskite structure. We show that third order magnetoelectric coupling terms must always involve magnetic ordering at the A and B-site which either transforms both as R-point or both as X-point time odd irreducible representations (irreps). For fourth order couplings we demonstrate that this criterion may be relaxed allowing couplings involving irreps at X, M and R-points which collectively conserve crystal momentum, producing a magnetoelectric ef…
Electronic structures of multiferroic RMnO$_3$ (R=Y, Er) have been investigated by employing photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). We have found that Mn ions in RMnO$_3$ are in the trivalent high-spin state with the total spin of S=2. The occupied Mn ($d_{xz} - d_{yz}$) states lie deep below $\rm E_F$, while the occupied Mn ($d_{xy} - d_{x^2 -y^2}$) states overlap very much with the O $2p$ states. It is observed that the PES spectral intensity of Mn 3d states is negligible above the occupied O $2p$ bands, suggesting that YMnO$_3$ is likely to be a charge-tra…
We propose experimental verification and theoretical explanation of magnetic anomalies in the complex Fe-contained double perovskite multiferroics like PbFe$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$O$_3$. The theoretical part is based on our model of coexistence of long-range magnetic order and spin glass in the above substances. In our model, the exchange interaction is anisotropic, coupling antiferromagnetically $z$ spin components of Fe$^{3+}$ ions. At the same time, the $xy$ components are coupled by much weaker exchange interaction of ferromagnetic sign. In the system with spatial disorder (half of corresponding…
The magnetic order, spin dynamics, and crystal structure of the multiferroic Sr0.56Ba0.44MnO3 have been investigated using neutron and x-ray scattering. Ferroelectricity develops at TC=305 K with a polarization of 4.2 microC/cm2 associated with the displacements of the Mn ions, while the Mn4+ spins order below TN = 200 K into a simple G-type commensurate magnetic structure. Below TN the ferroelectric order decreases dramatically demonstrating that the two order parameters are strongly coupled. The ground state spin dynamics are characterized by a spin gap of 4.6(5) meV and the magnon density o…
Two-dimensional (2D) multiferroic materials are ideal systems for exploring new coupling mechanisms between different ferroic orders and producing novel quantum phenomena with potential applications. We employed first-principles density functional theory calculations to discover intrinsic ferroelectric and anti-ferroelectric phases of CrPSe$_3$, which show ferromagnetic order and compete with the centrosymmetric phase with an antiferromagnetic order. Our analysis show that the electrical dipoles of such type-I multiferroic phases come from the out-of-plane displacements of phosphorus ions due …
Raman study on a select few orthochromites, RCrO$_3$ (R = Y, Lu, Gd, Eu and Sm) shows that the phonon behavior at TN in compounds with magnetic R-ion (Gd and Sm) is remarkably different from that of non-magnetic R-ion (Y, Lu and Eu). While anomalies in most of the observed phonon frequencies in all these compounds may result from the distortion of CrO$_6$ octahedra due to size effect and magnetostriction arising from Cr-ordering, the anomalous behavior of their linewidths observed at TN for the compounds with only magnetic R-ion suggests spin-phonon coupling. The presence of spin-phonon coupli…
The spin-wave excitations of the multiferroic $\rm MnWO_4$ have been measured in its low-temperature collinear commensurate phase using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. These excitations can be well described by a Heisenberg model with competing long-range exchange interactions and a single-ion anisotropy term. The magnetic interactions are strongly frustrated within the zigzag spin chain along c axis and between chains along the a axis, while the coupling between spin along the b axis is much weaker. The balance of these interactions results in the noncollinear incommensurate spi…
The electric-field control of $d$-electron magnetism in multiferroic transition metal oxides is attracting widespread interest for the underlying fundamental physics and for next generation spintronic devices. Here, we report an extensive study of the $3d$ magnetism in magnetoelectric Ga$_{0.6}$Fe$_{1.4}$O$_3$ (GFO) epitaxial films by polarization dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We found a non-zero integral of the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, with a sign depending upon the relative orientation between the external magnetic field and the crystallographic axes. %By reliably enlarg…
The multiferroic RMn2O5 family, where R is rare-earth ion or Y, exhibits rich physics of multiferroicity which has not yet well understood, noting that multiferroicity is receiving attentions for promising application potentials. DyMn2O5 is a representative member of this family. The ferroelectric polarization in DyMn2O5 is claimed to have two anti-parallel components: one (PDM) from the symmetric exchange striction between the Dy3+-Mn4+ interactions and the other (PMM) from the symmetric exchange striction between the Mn3+-Mn4+ interactions. We investigate the evolutions of the two components…
The temperature evolution of the crystal and magnetic structures of ferroelectric sulfide AgCrS2 have been investigated by means of neutron scattering. AgCrS2 undergoes at TN = 41.6 K a first-order phase transition, from a paramagnetic rhombohedral R3m to an antiferromagnetic monoclinic structure with a polar Cm space group. In addition to being ferroelectric below TN, the low temperature phase of AgCrS2 exhibits an unconventional collinear magnetic structure that can be described as double ferromagnetic stripes coupled antiferromagnetically, with the magnetic moment of Cr+3 oriented along b w…
The link between the crystal distortions of the perovskite structure and the magnetic exchange interaction, the single-ion anisotropy (SIA) and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction are investigated by means of density-functional calculations. Using BiFeO$_3$ and LaFeO$_3$ as model systems, we quantify the relationship between the oxygen octahedra rotations, the ferroelectricity and the weak ferromagnetism (wFM). We recover the fact that the wFM is due to the DM interaction induced by the oxygen octahedra rotations. We find a simple relationship between the wFM, the oxygen rotation amplitu…
We present a comprehensive single crystal neutron diffraction investigation of the $\rm Mn_{1-x}Co_{x}WO_4$ with $0.02\leq x \leq0.30$. At lower concentration $x \leq 0.05$, the system is quickly driven into the multiferroic phase with spin structure forming an elliptical spiral order similar to the parent compound. The reduction of electric polarization is ascribed to the tilting of the spiral plane. For $x\sim 0.075$, the magnetic structure undergoes a spin flop transition that is characterized by a sudden rotation of the spin helix envelope into the $ac$ plane. This spin structure persists …
We explore computationally the formation of tri-layer superlattices as an alternative approach for combining ferroelectricity with magnetism to form magnetoelectric multiferroics. We find that the contribution to the superlattice polarization from tri-layering is small compared to typical polarizations in conventionalferroelectrics, and the switchable ferroelectric component is negligible. In contrast, we show that epitaxial strain and ``negative pressure'' can yield large, switchable polarizations that are compatible with the coexistence of magnetism, even in materials with no active ferroele…
We show by means of ab-initio calculations that the organic molecular crystal TTF-CA is multiferroic: it has an instability to develop spontaneously both ferroelectric and magnetic ordering. Ferroelectricity is driven by a Peierls transition of the TTF-CA in its ionic state. Subsequent antiferromagnetic ordering strongly enhances the opposing electronic contribution to the polarization: it is so large that it switches the direction of the total ferroelectric moment. Within an extended Hubbard model we capture the essence of the electronic interactions in TTF-CA, confirm the presence of a multi…
