Finitary Group Cohomology and Eilenberg-Mac Lane Spaces

We say that a group G has cohomology almost everywhere finitary if and only if the nth cohomology functors of G commute with filtered colimits for all sufficiently large n. In this paper, we show that if G is a group in Kropholler's class LHF with cohomology almost everywhere finitary, then G has an Eilenberg--Mac Lane space K(G,1) which is dominated by a CW-complex with finitely many n-cells for all sufficiently large n. It is an open question as to whether this holds for arbitrary G. We also remark that the converse holds for any group G.

On the second stable homotopy group of the Eilenberg-Maclane space and the Schur Multiplier

We prove that for a finitely generated group $G$, the second stable homotopy group $π_2^S(K(G,1))$ of the Eilenberg-Maclane space $K(G,1)$ is completely determined by the Schur multiplier $H_2(G)$. We also prove that the second stable homotopy group $π_2^S(K(G,1))$ is equal to the Schur multiplier $H_2(G)$ for a torsion group $G$ with no elements of order $2$ and show that for such groups, $π_2^S(K(G,1))$ is a direct factor of $π_{3}(SK(G,1))$, where $S$ denotes suspension and $π_2^S$ the second stable homotopy group. The Eilenberg-Mac Lane cohomology of an inverse monoid and the maximum group image

The aim of this paper is to see at what extent homological properties of an inverse monoid are determined from those of its maximum group image. We provide several evidences that the maximum group image contains vital homological information which can be used to study certain properties of the monoid itself. Eilenberg--Mac Lane Spaces for Topological Groups

The goal of this paper is to establish a topological version of the notion of an Eilenberg-Mac Lane space. For a group $G$, $\mathcal{F}_G$ denotes the set of all non-empty finite subsets of $G$. Transitive action on finite points of a full shift and a finitary Ryan's theorem

We show that on the four-symbol full shift, there is a finitely generated subgroup of the automorphism group whose action is (set-theoretically) transitive of all orders on the points of finite support, up to the necessary caveats due to shift-commutation. As a corollary, we obtain that there is a finite set of automorphisms whose centralizer is $\mathbb{Z}$ (the shift group), giving a finitary version of Ryan's theorem (on the four-symbol full shift), suggesting an automorphism group invariant for mixing SFTs. Colimits of abelian groups

In this paper we study the colimit N_2(G) of abelian subgroups of a discrete group G. This group is the fundamental group of a subspace B(2,G) of the classifying space BG. We describe N_2(G) for certain groups, and apply our results to study the homotopy type of the space B(2,G). We give a list of classes of groups for which B(2,G) is not an Eilenberg--Maclane space of type K(π,1).

Iterated group extensions

We introduce the notion of iterated group extensions, which, roughly speaking, is what one obtains by forming a group extension of a group extension. We interpret iterated extensions in terms of group cohomology, in the same way as Eilenberg-MacLane did for usual group extensions. The cohomological comparison arising from the associated abelian object

We make explicit some conditions on a semi-abelian category D such that, for any abelian group A in D and any object Y in D, the cohomology group homomorphisms with coefficients in A, induced by the inclusion of the abelian objects of D at the level of the slice category D/Y, are actually isomorphisms. These conditions hold in particular when D is the category Gp of groups, and this allows us to give a new insight on the Eilenberg-Mac Lane cohomology of groups. They hold also when D is the category K-Lie of Lie-algebras.

Stable splittings, spaces of representations and almost commuting elements in Lie groups

In this paper the space of almost commuting elements in a Lie group is studied through a homotopical point of view. In particular a stable splitting after one suspension is derived for these spaces and their quotients under conjugation. A complete description for the stable factors appearing in this splitting is provided for compact connected Lie groups of rank one.By using symmetric products, the colimits $\Rep(\Z^n, SU)$, $\Rep(\Z^n,U)$ and $\Rep(\Z^n, Sp)$ are explicitly described as finite products of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces.
