Using infrared photometric data extracted from the 2MASS, IRAS and MSX databases, 142 suspected young stellar objects (YSOs) are selected from about 2 million stars in the Camelopardalis segment of the Milky Way limited by Galactic longitude 132-158 deg, latitude pm 12 deg. According to radial velocities of the associated CO clouds, the objects are attributed to three molecular and dust cloud layers at 150--300 pc, 900 pc and 2.2 kpc distances from the Sun. These objects concentrate into dust and molecular clouds and exhibit extremely large reddenings (A_V up to 25 mag) which can be caused by the dust in foreground clouds and circumstellar envelopes or disks. In the J-H vs. H-K diagram these objects lie above the intrinsic line of T Tauri variables, roughly along the black-body line. Among the identified objects, some already known YSOs are present, including the well investigated massive object GL 490. The spectral energy distributions between 700 nm and 100 mum suggest that the objects may be YSOs of classes I, II and III. However, we do not exclude the possibility that a small fraction of the objects, especially those without IRAS and MSX photometry, may be unrecognized heavily reddened OB-stars, late-type AGB stars or even galaxies.
In the first three papers of this series, about 200 objects in Camelopardalis and the nearby areas of Cassiopeia, Perseus and Auriga were suspected of being pre-main-sequence stars in different stages of evolution. To confirm the evolutionary status of the 15 brightest objects, their far-red range (600--950 nm) spectra were obtained. Almost all these objects are young stars with emissions in H alpha, OI, CaII and P9 lines. The equivalent widths of emission lines and approximate spectral classes of the objects are determined.
Star formation in the Local spiral arm in the direction of the Galactic longitudes 132--158 deg is reviewed. Recent star-forming activity in this Milky Way direction is evidenced by the presence here of the Cam OB1 association and dense dust and molecular clouds containing H$α$ emission stars, young irregular variables and infrared stellar objects. The clouds of the Local arm concentrate in two layers at 150-300 pc and at about 900 pc from the Sun. The Perseus arm objects in this direction are at a distance of about 2 kpc.
The distribution of dust and molecular clouds in the direction of Galactic longitudes 132--158 deg and latitudes pm 12 deg is investigated. The maps of dust distribution in the area were plotted from the following surveys: the star counts in the DSS I database by Dobashi et al. (2005), the survey of the average infrared color excesses by Froebrich et al. (2007) and the thermal dust emission survey at 100 micrometers by Schlegel et al. (1998). The distribution of molecular clouds was taken from the whole sky CO survey by Dame et al. (2001). All these surveys show very similar cloud patterns in …
Using the infrared photometry data extracted from the 2MASS, IRAS and MSX databases, 50 suspected young stellar objects (YSOs) are selected from about 37500 infrared objects in the 3x3 deg area with the center at Galactic longitude 142.5 deg and latitude +1.0 deg, in the vicinity of the young stellar object GL 490 in the dark cloud DoH 942 (Dobashi et al. 2005). The spectral energy distributions between 700 nm and 100 mum suggest that most of the selected objects may be YSOs of classes I and II. In the color-magnitude diagram K_s vs. H-K_s the suspected YSOs occupy an area right of the main se…
We combined the results of UBVR photometry of CI Cam taken at Sternberg Astronomical Institute in 1998--2001, and moderate resolution spectroscopy taken at Special Astrophysical Observatory during the same time period. Photometry as well as fluxes of Balmer emissions and of some Fe II emission lines of CI Cam in quiet state reveal a cyclic variation with the period of $1100\pm50^d$. The variation like this may be due to an orbital motion in a wide pair with a giant star companion that exhibits the reflection effect on its side faced to a compact companion. The V-band photometry also confirms t…
We model the thermal effect of young stars on their surrounding environment in order to understand clustered star formation. We take radiative heating of dust, dust-gas collisional heating, cosmic-ray heating, and molecular cooling into account. Using Dusty, a spherical continuum radiative transfer code, we model the dust temperature distribution around young stellar objects with various luminosities and surrounding gas and dust density distributions. We have created a grid of dust temperature models, based on our modeling with Dusty, which we can use to calculate the dust temperature in a fie…
Dust plays crucial roles in galaxy formation and evolution. In the early epoch of galaxy evolution dust is only supplied by supernovae (SNe). With the aid of a new physical model of dust production by SNe, we constructed a model of dust emission from forming galaxies. We show the evolution of the spectral energy distribution (SED). Then we adopt this model to a local starbursting dwarf galaxy SBS 0335$-$052. Further we discuss the SEDs of high redshift galaxies, and consider their observational feasibility.
Using the longest optical-interferometeric baselines currently available, we have detected strong near-infrared (NIR) emission from inside the dust-destruction radius of Herbig Ae stars MWC275 and AB Aur. Our sub-milli-arcsecond resolution observations unambiguously place the emission between the dust-destruction radius and the magnetospheric co-rotation radius. We argue that this new component corresponds to hot gas inside the dust-sublimation radius, confirming recent claims based on spectrally-resolved interferometry and dust evaporation front modeling.
Using the OH-airglow suppressor spectrograph at the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope and the CGS4 spectrometer at the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope, we have found exceptionally large Balmer decrements in two unusual high-z QSOs, Hawaii 167 (z=2.36, Ha/Hb = 13) and Q0059-2735 (z=1.59, Ha/Hb = 7.6), the latter being a so-called low-ionization broad absorption line QSO (BALQSO). We argue that these objects are young QSOs heavily enshrouded by dust. In fact, the internal reddening might be so large as to completely extinguish the QSO light in the restframe UV, allowing us to see the underly…
Hundreds of circumstellar disks in the Orion nebula are being rapidly destroyed by the intense ultraviolet radiation produced by nearby bright stars. These young, million-year-old disks may not survive long enough to form planetary systems. Nevertheless, the first stage of planet formation -- the growth of dust grains into larger particles -- may have begun in these systems. Observational evidence for these large particles in Orion's disks is presented. A model of grain evolution in externally irradiated protoplanetary disks is developed and predicts rapid particle size evolution and sharp out…
We characterize the small and large scale environment of the young star V1331 Cygni with high resolution HST/WFPC2 and Digitized Sky Survey images. In addition to a previously known outer dust ring (~30'' in diameter), the HST/WFPC2 scattered light image reveals an inner dust ring for the first time. This ring has a maximum radius of 6.5'' and is possibly related to a molecular envelope. Large-scale optical images show that V1331 Cyg is located at the tip of a long dust filament linking it to the dark cloud LDN 981. We discuss the origin of the observed dust morphology and analyze the object's…
We review recent progress in high-resolution imaging of scattered light from disks around young stellar objects. Many new disks have been discovered or imaged in scattered light, and improved instrumentation and observing techniques have led to better disk images at optical, near-infrared, and thermal-infrared wavelengths. Multi-wavelength datasets are particularly valuable, as dust particle properties have wavelength dependencies. Modeling the changes in scattered-light images with wavelength gives direct information on the dust properties. This has now been done for several different disks. …
We present high-resolution infrared spectra of four YSOs (T Tau N, T Tau S, RNO 91, and HL Tau). The spectra exhibit narrow absorption lines of 12CO, 13CO, and C18O as well as broad emission lines of gas phase12CO. The narrow absorption lines of CO are shown to originate from the colder circumstellar gas. We find that the line of sight gas column densities resulting from the CO absorption lines are much higher than expected for the measured extinction for each source and suggest the gas to dust ratio is measuring the dust settling and/or grain coagulation in these extended disks. We provide a …
Given their proximity and age differences, nearby groups of young stars are valuable laboratories for investigations of disk evolution and diversity. The estimated 10-Myr age of groups like the TW Hydrae Association provides a strong constraint on disk evolution timescales and fills a significant gap in the age sequence between 1-Myr-old T Tauri stars in molecular clouds and 50-Myr-old nearby open clusters. I review the results of recent and on-going studies of dusty disks in three nearby groups --TW Hya, $η$ Cha and MBM 12-- that suggest rapid evolution of inner disks. However, it is unlikely…
We obtained low resolution (R = 100) mid-infrared (8-13 micron wavelengths) spectra of 8 nearby young main sequence stars with the Keck 1 telescope and Long-Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) to search for 10 micron silicate (Si-O stretch) emission from circumstellar dust. No stars exhibited readily apparent emission: Spectra were then analyzed by least-squares fitting of a template based on a spectrum of Comet Hale-Bopp. Using this technique, we were able to constrain the level of silicate emission to a threshold ten times below what was previously possible from space. We found one star, HD 17925,…
We report the codiscovery of the spatially-resolved dust disk of the Vega-like star HR 4796A. Images of the thermal dust emission at $λ= 18 μ$m show an elongated structure approximately 200 AU in diameter surrounding the central A0V star. The position angle of the disk, $30^{\circ} \pm 10^{\circ}$, is consistent to the position angle of the M companion star, $225^{\circ}$, suggesting that the disk-binary system is being seen nearly along its orbital plane. The surface brightness distribution of the disk is consistent with the presence of an inner disk hole of approximately 50 AU radius, as was…
Long-baseline optical interferometers can now detect and resolve hot dust emission thought to arise at the inner edge of circumstellar disks around young stellar objects (YSOs). We argue that the near-infrared sizes being measured are closely related to the radius at which dust is sublimated by the stellar radiation field. We consider how realistic dust optical properties and gas opacity dramatically affect the predicted location of this dust destruction radius, an exercise routinely done in other contexts but so far neglected in the analysis of near-infrared sizes of YSOs. We also present the…
We present near infrared broad band and polarimetric images of the compact star forming cluster AFGL437 obtained with the NICMOS instrument aboard HST. Our high resolution images reveal a well collimated bipolar reflection nebulosity in the cluster and allow us to identify WK34 as the illuminating source. The scattered light in the bipolar nebulosity centered on this source is very highly polarized (up to 79%). Such high levels of polarization implies a distribution of dust grains lacking large grains, contrary to the usual dust models of dark clouds. We discuss the geometry of the dust distri…
We present an analysis of wind-blown, parsec-sized, mid-infrared bubbles and associated star-formation using GLIMPSE/IRAC, MIPSGAL/MIPS and MAGPIS/VLA surveys. Three bubbles from the Churchwell et al. (2006) catalog were selected. The relative distribution of the ionized gas (based on 20 cm emission), PAH emission (based on 8 um, 5.8 um and lack of 4.5 um emission) and hot dust (24 um emission) are compared. At the center of each bubble there is a region containing ionized gas and hot dust, surrounded by PAHs. We identify the likely source(s) of the stellar wind and ionizing flux producing eac…
We present new high-sensitivity 1.3 mm bolometer observations of the young outflow L1157. These data show that the continuum emission arises from four distinct components: a circumstellar disk, a protostellar envelope, an extended flattened envelope --the dense remnant of the molecular cloud in which the protostar was formed--, and the outflow itself, which represents ~20% of the total flux. The outflow emission exhibits two peaks that are coincident with the two strong shocks in the southern lobe of L1157. We show that the mm continuum is dominated by thermal dust emission arising in the high…
This contribution reviews results from interferometric observations of circumstellar disks around young stars of $\lesssim$3 M$_{\odot}$, performed with the MIDI instrument operating in the 10 $μ$m spectral region. Two main topics, the disk structure on $\sim$1-10 AU scales and the dust properties in the same region, are illustrated with several examples of MIDI studies, covering various evolutionary stages. The spatially resolved observations largely confirm SED-only based hypotheses on disk structure, yet also reveal degeneracies that may occur in such SED modeling. The properties of the dus…
Effects of young stellar clusters on their gas and dust environment are probed using mid-infrared (MIR) wavelengths. The strong MIR [NeIII]/[NeII] ratios (5 to 10) reveal the presence of current massive stars less than 5 Myr. Using MIR line ratios along with optical and NIR data from the literature, composite SEDs are constructed for NGC 1569, NGC 1140 and IIZw40. The stellar SEDs are then used as input to a dust model to study the impact of the hard, penetrating radiation field on the dust components, particularly in low metallicity environments, where the destructive effects of the massive s…
We characterize the crystalline silicate content and spatial distribution of small dust grains in a large sample of protoplanetary disks in the Taurus-Auriga young cluster, using Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared spectra. In turn we use the results to analyze the evolution of structure and composition of these 1-2 Myr-old disks around Solar- and later-type young stars, and test the standard models of dust processing which result in the conversion of originally amorphous dust into minerals. We find strong evidence of evolution of the dust crystalline mass fraction in parallel with that of th…
We present a complete low-resolution (R~100) near-infrared spectrum of the substellar object GY11, member of the rho-Ophiuchi young association. The object is remarkable because of its low estimated mass and age and because it is associated with a mid-infrared source, an indication of a surrounding dusty disk. Based on the comparison of our spectrum with similar spectra of field M-dwarfs and atmospheric models, we obtain revised estimates of the spectral type, effective temperature and luminosity of the central object. These parameters are used to place the object on a Hertzprung-Russell diagr…
We present high-resolution mid-infrared observations of the nearby late-type young binary system Hen 3-600. The binary, at a distance of $\sim$ 50 pc, could be a member of the TW Hydrae Association, the nearest known group of young stars, with an age of a few million years. Our images make it possible for the first time to determine which star in the pair, separated by 1.4'', harbors the mid-infrared excess detected by IRAS. In the near-infrared, where the radiation is primarily photospheric, Hen 3-600A (M3) and Hen 3-600B (M3.5) have a flux ratio of 1.6. At 4.8$μ$m, 10.8$μ$m, and 18.2$μ$m, th…
We investigate the attenuation law seen through an interstellar medium (ISM) with clumpy spatial distributions of stars and dust. The clumpiness of the dust distribution is introduced by a multi-phase ISM model. We solve a set of radiative transfer equations with multiple anisotropic scatterings through the clumpy ISM in a 1-D plane-parallel geometry by using the mega-grain approximation, in which dusty clumps are regarded as very large particles (i.e. mega-grains). The clumpiness of the stellar distribution is introduced by the youngest stars embedded in the clumps. We assume a smooth spatial…
A star forms when a cloud of dust and gas collapses. It is generally believed that this collapse first produces a flattened rotating disk, through which matter is fed onto the embryonic star at the center of the disk. When the temperature and density at the center of the star pass a critical threshold, thermonuclear fusion begins. The remaining disk, which can still contain up to 0.3 times the mass of the star, is then sculpted and eventually dissipated by the radiation and wind from the newborn star. Unfortunately this picture of the structure and evolution of the disk remains speculative bec…
We discuss the properties of several circumstellar debris disk systems imaged with the Hubble Space Telescope's Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer in a survey of young stars with known far-IR excesses. These dusty disks around young ($\sim$ 5--8 Myr) unembedded stars exhibit morphological anisotropies and other characteristics which are suggestive of recent or on-going planet formation. We consider evidence for the evolution of populations of collisionally produced disk grains in light of the significant presence of remnant primordial gas in the optically thick disk of the clas…
We present infrared observations of the young, oxygen-rich supernova remnant 1E 0102.2-7219 (E0102) in the Small Magellanic Cloud, obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The remnant is detected at 24 um but not at 8 or 70 um and has a filled morphology with two prominent filaments. We find evidence for the existence of up to 8x10^-4 Msolar of hot dust (T~120 K) associated with the remnant. Most of the hot dust is located in the central region of E0102 which appears significantly enhanced in infrared and radio continuum emission relative to the X--ray emission. Even if all of the hot dust w…
We present self-consistent models of gas in optically-thick dusty disks and calculate its thermal, density and chemical structure. The models focus on an accurate treatment of the upper layers where line emission originates, and at radii $\gtrsim 0.7$ AU. We present results of disks around $\sim 1{\rm M}_{\odot}$ stars where we have varied dust properties, X-ray luminosities and UV luminosities. We separately treat gas and dust thermal balance, and calculate line luminosities at infrared and sub-millimeter wavelengths from all transitions originating in the predominantly neutral gas that lies …
We present observations of 1.2-mm dust continuum emission, made with the Swedish ESO Submillimeter Telescope, towards eighteen luminous IRAS point sources, all with colors typical of compact HII regions and associated with CS(2-1) emission, thought to be representative of young massive star forming regions. Emission was detected toward all the IRAS objects. We find that the 1.2-mm sources associated with them have distinct physical parameters, namely sizes of 0.4 pc, dust temperatures of 30 K, masses of 2x10^3 Msun, column densities of 3x10^23 cm^-2, and densities of 4x10^5 cm^-3. We refer to …
Dust emission around the nearby star epsilon Eridani has been imaged using a new submillimetre camera (SCUBA at the JCMT). At 850 microns wavelength a ring of dust is seen, peaking at 60 AU from the star and with much lower emission inside 30 AU. The mass of the ring is at least 0.01 Earth masses in dust, while an upper limit of 0.4 Earth masses in molecular gas is imposed by CO observations. The total mass is comparable to the estimated amount of material, 0.04-0.3 Earth masses, in comets orbiting the Solar System. The most probable origin of the the ring structure is that it is a young analo…
We present detailed fits of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of four submillimeter (submm) galaxies selected by the presence of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) event (GRBs 980703, 000210, 000418 and 010222). These faint ~3 mJy submm emitters at redshift ~1 are characterized by an unusual combination of long- and short-wavelength properties, namely enhanced submm and/or radio emission combined with optical faintness and blue colors. We exclude an active galactic nucleus as the source of long-wavelength emission. From the SED fits we conclude that the four galaxies are young (ages <2 Gyr), highl…
We report the discovery of a rich component of dusty star-forming galaxies contaminating the red-sequence in the supercluster system comprising Abell 901a, 901b and A902 at redshift ~0.17. These galaxies do not fit into the colour-density relation, because their preferred habitat is different from that of regular red-sequence galaxies, which are typically dust-poor, old and passively evolving. The dusty red galaxies prefer the medium-density outskirts of clusters while being rare in both the low-density field and the high-density cluster cores. This new result is based on the information conte…
The formation and evolution of young low mass stars are characterized by important processes of mass loss and accretion ocurring in the innermost regions of their placentary circumstellar disks. Because of the large obscuration of these disks at optical and infrared wavelengths in the early protostellar stages (Class 0 Sources), they were previously detected only at radio wavelengths using interferometric techniques. We have detected with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) the mid-infrared emission associated with the Class 0 protostar VLA1 in the HH1-2 region located in the Orion nebula. Th…
We present the first mid-infrared (MIR) detection of a field brown dwarf (BD) and the first ground-based MIR measurements of a disk around a young BD candidate. We prove the absence of warm dust surrounding the field BD LP 944-20. In the case of the young BD candidate Cha Ha2, we find clear evidence for thermal dust emission from a disk. Surprisingly, the object does not exhibit any silicate feature as previously predicted. We show that the flat spectrum can be explained by an optically thick flat dust disk.
We examine a problem of the dust grains survival in the disk wind in T Tauri stars (TTSs). For consideration we choose the disk wind model described by Garcia et al. (2001), where a gas component of the wind is heated by an ambipolar diffusion up to the temperature of the order of 10$^4$ K. It is shown that the dust grains heating due to collisions with the gas atoms and electrons is inefficient in comparison with heating by the stellar radiation, and thus, dust survives even in the hot wind component. Owing to this, the disk wind may be opaque for the ultraviolet and optical radiation of the …
(Abridged) We present results from a JCMT/SCUBA 850 um search for cold dust around nearby young stars belonging to the beta Pic (t~12 Myr) and the Local Association (t~50 Myr) moving groups. Unlike most past sub-mm studies, our sample was chosen on the basis of stellar age. Our observations achieve about an order of magnitude greater sensitivity in dust mass compared to previous work in this age range. We detected two of the three M dwarfs in our sample at 850 um, GJ 182 and GJ 803. GJ 182 may also possess a 25 um excess, indicative of warm dust in the inner few AU of its disk. For GJ 803 (AU …
We have carried out JHK polarimetric observations of eleven dusty young stars, by using the polarimeter module IRPOL2 with the near-IR camera UIST on the 3.8-m United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). Our sample targeted systems for which UKIRT-resolvable discs had been predicted by model fits to their spectral energy distributions. Our observations have confirmed the presence of extended polarized emission around TW Hya and around HD 169142. HD 150193 and HD 142666 show the largest polarization values among our sample, but no extended structure was resolved. By combining our observations wi…
We present optical spectra of four intermediate mass candidate young stellar objects that have often been classified as Herbig Ae/Be stars. Typical Herbig Ae/Be emission features are not present in the spectra of these stars. Three of them, HD 36917, HD 36982 and HD 37062 are members of the young Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). This association constrains their ages to be < 1 Myr. The lack of appreciable near infrared excess in them suggests the absence of hot dust close to the central star. But they do possess significant amounts of cold and extended dust component as revealed by the large excess…
We present detailed models of irradiated T Tauri disks including dust grain growth with power-law size distributions. The models assume complete mixing between dust and gas and solve for the vertical disk structure self-consistentlyincluding the heating effects of stellar irradiation as well as local viscous heating. For a given total dust mass, grain growth is found to decrease the vertical height of the surface where the optical depth to the stellar radiation becomes unit and thus the local irradiation heating, while increasing the disk emission at mm and sub-mm wavelengths. The resulting di…
We construct detailed vertical structure models of irradiated accretion disks around T Tauri stars with interstellar medium dust uniformly mixed with gas. The dependence of the structure and emission properties on mass accretion rate, viscosity parameter, and disk radius is explored using these models. The theoretical spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and images for all inclinations are compared with observations of the entire population of Classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) and Class I objects in Taurus. In particular, we find that the median near-infrared fluxes can be explained within the er…
Constraints on the density and thermal 3D structure of the dense molecular cloud core Rho Oph D are derived from a detailed 3D radiative transfer modeling. Two ISOCAM images at 7 and 15 micron are fitted simultaneously by representing the dust distribution in the core with a series of 3D Gaussian density profiles. Size, total density, and position of the Gaussians are optimized by simulated annealing to obtain a 2D column density map. The projected core density has a complex elongated pattern with two peaks. We propose a new method to calculate an approximate temperature in an externally illum…
We report the discovery of four dusty cometary tails around low mass stars in two young clusters belonging to the W5 star forming region. Fits to the observed emission profiles from 24 micron observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope give tail lifetimes < 30 Myr, but more likely < 5 Myr. This result suggests that the cometary phase is a short lived phenomenon, occurring after photoevaporation by a nearby O star has removed gas from the outer disk of a young low mass star (see also Balog et al. 2006; Balog et al. 2008).
[Abridged] We present the first direct comparison of the distribution of the gas, as traced by the [OI] 6300 AA emission, and the dust, as traced by the 10 micron emission, in the protoplanetary disk around three intermediate-mass stars: HD 101412, HD 135344 B and HD 179218. N-band visibilities were obtained with VLTI/MIDI. Simple geometrical models are used to compare the dust emission to high-resolution optical spectra in the 6300 AA [OI] line of the same targets. The disks around HD 101412 and HD 135344 B appear strongly flared in the gas, but self-shadowed in the dust beyond ~ 2 AU. In bot…
We present high spatial resolution Submillimeter Array observations and supplementary single-dish photometry of the molecular gas and dust around IRAS 04158+2805, a young source with spectral type M5-M6 in the Taurus star-forming region. A bright, highly elongated dust structure that extends 8" (~1120 AU) in diameter is revealed in a 883 micron thermal continuum image. This emission geometry is in good agreement with optical observations that show a similar structure in absorption, aligned perpendicular to bipolar scattered light nebulae. However, the interferometric data also clearly demonstr…
We present a general set of calculations decribing the chemical evolution of young massive galaxies and predict the evolution of the CO, O2, and dust abundances as a function of age and metallicity.
Images obtained with the CFHTIR camera on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope are used to investigate the near-infrared photometric properties of the star-forming M81 group galaxy NGC 3077. The spectral-energy distribution (SED) of the near-infrared light within 10 arcsec of the nucleus is consistent with the 2um light being dominated by hot young (log(t_{yr}) < 6.8) stars reddened by A_V = 3 - 4, with A_V < 8 mag in some regions. A population like that near the center of NGC 205 likely contributes only a modest fraction of the light near 2um. A number of candidate star clusters are detected in…
We report the detection of CO(2-1) and 3.1 mm and 1.3 mm continuum emission towards the extremely young starburst in NGC 5253, with data taken from the Owens Valley Millimeter Array. Faint CO emission originates in five molecular clouds distributed along the prominent dust lane seen in visual images. With the gas, the morphology of NGC 5253 looks much like a dwarf elliptical version of the ``dust-lane ellipticals'' or ``polar-ring'' class of galaxies. The molecular gas resides in GMCs well away from the radio-IR super-star cluster/supernebula seen in the radio and infrared. The millimeter cont…
We analyze ISO archive data of the nearby bright emission-line star 51 Oph, previously classified as a proto-planetary system similar to beta Pic. The infrared spectrum reveals the presence of gas-phase emission bands of hot (approx 850 K) CO, CO_2, H_2O and NO. In addition to this, partially crystalline silicate dust is present. The solid-state bands and the energy distribution are indicative of dust that has formed recently, rather than of debris dust. The presence of hot molecular gas and the composition of the circumstellar dust are highly unusual for a young star and are reminiscent of wh…
Debris rings of dust are found around young luminous stars such as HR4796A and HD141569. Some of these entities have sharp edges and gaps which have been interpreted as evidence for the presence of shepherding and embedded planets. Here we show that gaps and sharp edges in the debris disks of dust can also be spontaneously self generated if they are embedded in optically thin regions of gaseous disks. This clumping instability arises in regions where an enhancement in the dust density leads to local gas temperature and pressure increases. Consequently, the relative motion between the gas and t…
We investigate the extinction curves of young galaxies in which dust is supplied from Type II supernovae (SNe II) and/or pair instability supernovae (PISNe). We adopt Nozawa et al. (2003) for compositions and size distribution of grains formed in SNe II and PISNe. We find that the extinction curve is quite sensitive to internal metal mixing in supernovae (SNe). The extinction curves predicted from the mixed SNe are dominated by SiO2 and is characterised by steep rise from infrared to ultraviolet (UV). The dust from unmixed SNe shows shallower extinction curve, because of the contribution from …
During the early stages of galaxy evolution, the metallicity is generally low and nearby metal-poor star-forming galaxies may provide templates for primordial star formation. In particular, the dust content of such objects is of great importance since early molecular formation can take place on grains. To gain insight into primeval galaxies at high redshift, we examine the dust content of the nearby extremely low-metallicity galaxy SBS 0335-052 which hosts a very young starburst (< 10 Myr). In young galaxies, the dust formation rate in Type II supernovae governs the amount of dust, and by inco…
Using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope we have obtained deep high-resolution CCD images in V and I of a 28'x28' field in the outer disk of M 31 at ~ 116' from the center along the major axis to the south-west, and covering a range of projected galactocentric distance from about 23 to 33 kpc. The field was chosen to correspond with extended HI features recorded near the HI edge of the galaxy. The many tens of thousands of objects detected in this large field have been classified using an automatic algorithm which distinguishes unresolved from resolved structures and provides photometry on the…
Using Spitzer Space Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope observations of the superbubble N51D, we have identified three young stellar objects (YSOs) in dust globules, and made the first detection of a Herbig-Haro object outside the Galaxy. The spectral energy distributions of these YSOs suggest young massive stars with disk, envelope, and outflow cavities. The interstellar conditions are used to assess whether the star formation was spontaneous or induced by external pressure.
We present mid-IR spectroscopy of three T Tauri stars in the young Chamealeon I dark cloud obtained with TIMMI2 on the ESO 3.6m telescope. In these three stars, the silicate emission band at 9.7 micron is prominent. We model it with a mixture of amorphous olivine grains of different size, crystalline silicates and silica. The fractional mass of these various components change widely from star to star. While the spectrum of CR Cha is dominated by small amorphous silicates, in VW Cha (and in a lesser degree in Glass I), there is clear evidence of a large amount of processed dust in the form of c…
We present detailed observations of the Treasure Chest, a compact nebula at the head of a dust pillar in the southern Carina nebula. This object is of interest because it is an example of a dense young cluster containing at least one massive star, the formation of which may have been triggered by feedback from the very massive stars in the Carina nebula, and possibly Eta Car itself. We investigate both the nebular and stellar content of the object. Near-IR emission-line images reveal a cavity inside the head of the dust pillar, which contains a dense cluster of young stars, while the observed …
