We examine a problem of the dust grains survival in the disk wind in T Tauri stars (TTSs). For consideration we choose the disk wind model described by Garcia et al. (2001), where a gas component of the wind is heated by an ambipolar diffusion up to the temperature of the order of 10$^4$ K. It is shown that the dust grains heating due to collisions with the gas atoms and electrons is inefficient in comparison with heating by the stellar radiation, and thus, dust survives even in the hot wind component. Owing to this, the disk wind may be opaque for the ultraviolet and optical radiation of the star and is capable to absorb its noticeable fraction. Calculations show that at the accretion rate $\dot{M_a} = 10^{-8}-10^{-6} M_\odot$ per year this fraction for TTSs may range from 20% to 40% of a total luminosity of the star correspondingly. This means that the disk wind in TTSs can play the same role as the puffed inner rim considered in the modern models of accretion disks. In Herbig Ae stars (HAEs) inner regions of the disk winds ($r \le 0.5$ AU) are free of dust since there dust grains sublimate under the effect of the radiation of the star. Therefore, in this case a fraction of the absorbed radiation by the disk wind is significantly less, and may be compared with the effect of the "puffed-up inner rim" only at $\dot{M_a} \geq 10^{-6} M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. Due to the structural inhomogeneity of the disk wind its optical depth towards an observer may be variable resulting in the photometric activity of the young stars. For the same reason, one can observe moving shadows from the gas and dust streams with the spiral-like structure on the highly resolved circumstellar disk images.
We analyze the dependence of circumstellar extinction on core mass for the brightest planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Magellanic Clouds and M31. We show that in all three galaxies, a statistically significant correlation exists between the two quantities, such that high core mass objects have greater extinction. We model this behavior, and show that the relation is a simple consequence of the greater mass loss and faster evolution times of high mass stars. The relation is important because it provides a natural explanation for the invariance of the [O III] 5007 planetary nebula luminosity functi…
The effective extinction law for supernovae surrounded by circumstellar dust is examined by Monte-Carlo simulations. Grains with light scattering properties as for interstellar dust in the Milky-Way (MW) or the Large Magellanic Clouds (LMC), but surrounding the explosion site would cause a semi-diffusive propagation of light up to the edge of the dust shell. Multiple scattering of photons predominantly attenuates photons with shorter wavelengths, thus steepening the effective extinction law as compared to the case of single scattering in the interstellar medium. Our simulations yield typical v…
Supernovae descendent from massive stars explode in media that have been modified by their progenitors' mass loss and UV radiation. The supernova ejecta will first interact with the circumstellar material shed by the progenitors at late evolutionary stages, and then interact with the interstellar material. Circumstellar nebulae in supernova remnants can be diagnosed by their small expansion velocities and high [N II]/H$α$ ratios. The presence of circumstellar nebulae appears ubiquitous among known young supernova remnants. These nebulae can be compared to those around evolved massive stars to …
A question central to understanding the origin of our solar system is: how do planets form in circumstellar disks around young stars? Because of the complex nature of the physical processes involved, multi-wavelength observations of large samples will be required in order to obtain a complete answer to this question. Surveys undertaken with ISO have helped to solve pieces of this puzzle in addition to uncovering new mysteries. We review a variety of studies aimed at understanding; i) the physical structure and composition of circumstellar disks commonly found surrounding young stellar objects;…
We review recent advances in our understanding of the innermost regions of the circumstellar environment around young stars, made possible by the technique of long baseline interferometry at infrared wavelengths. Near-infrared observations directly probe the location of the hottest dust. The characteristic sizes found are much larger than previously thought, and strongly correlate with the luminosity of the central young stars. This relation has motivated in part a new class of models of the inner disk structure. The first mid-infrared observations have probed disk emission over a larger range…
Hundreds of circumstellar disks in the Orion nebula are being rapidly destroyed by the intense ultraviolet radiation produced by nearby bright stars. These young, million-year-old disks may not survive long enough to form planetary systems. Nevertheless, the first stage of planet formation -- the growth of dust grains into larger particles -- may have begun in these systems. Observational evidence for these large particles in Orion's disks is presented. A model of grain evolution in externally irradiated protoplanetary disks is developed and predicts rapid particle size evolution and sharp out…
We present new K- and L'-band imaging observations for members of the young (3-5 Myr) sigma Orionis cluster, obtained with UIST at UKIRT. We determine (K-L') colour excesses with respect to the photospheres, finding evidence for warm circumstellar dust around 27 out of 83 cluster members that have masses between 0.04 Msun and 1.0 Msun. This indicates a circumstellar disc frequency of at least (33 +/- 6)% for this cluster, consistent with previous determinations from smaller samples (Oliveira et al. 2004) and also consistent with the 3 Myr disc half-life suggested by Haisch et al. (2001). There…
The temperature, density and kinematics of the gas and dust surrounding the luminous young stellar object GL~2591 are investigated on scales as small as 100 AU, probed by 4.7 micron absorption spectroscopy, to over 60,000 AU, probed by single-dish submillimeter spectroscopy. These two scales are connected by interferometric 86-226 GHz images of size 60,000 AU and resolution 2000 AU in continuum and molecular lines. The data are used to constrain the physical structure of the envelope and investigate the influence of the young star on its immediate surroundings.
We investigate the extinction curves of young galaxies in which dust is supplied from Type II supernovae (SNe II) and/or pair instability supernovae (PISNe). We adopt Nozawa et al. (2003) for compositions and size distribution of grains formed in SNe II and PISNe. We find that the extinction curve is quite sensitive to internal metal mixing in supernovae (SNe). The extinction curves predicted from the mixed SNe are dominated by SiO2 and is characterised by steep rise from infrared to ultraviolet (UV). The dust from unmixed SNe shows shallower extinction curve, because of the contribution from …
Interpretation of molecular line observations in tenuous circumstellar disks around young G-type stars in terms of a disk mass is difficult without a model that describes the chemical structure of these disks. This paper now discusses the chemistry in tenuous disks around young solar-type stars based on disk models that take into account the presence of a stellar chromosphere. The example of the disk around a 70 Myr old solar-type star shows that the dissociating radiation from the chromosphere is stronger than the interstellar ultraviolet radiation field up to a distance of ~400 AU from the s…
The sigma Orionis cluster is a young association evolving under the disruptive influence of its massive O-star namesake. We are analysing this cluster as part of a program to characterise the influence of O-stars on the early stages of stellar evolution. At an age of approximately 4 Myr, this cluster is at a crucial stage in terms of disk evolution and therefore it is a key case to better constrain disk dissipation timescales. We have obtained RI photometry and optical spectroscopy of the sigma Ori cluster; we have analysed the Li I and Na I features to establish cluster membership. We have th…
Hydrodynamic models of a young binary system accreting matter from the remnants of a protostellar cloud have been calculated by the SPH method. It is shown that periodic variations in column density in projection onto the primary component take place at low inclinations of the binary plane to the line of sight. They can result in periodic extinction variations. Three periodic components can exist in general case. The first component has a period equal to the orbital one and is attributable to the streams of matter penetrating into the inner regions of the binary. The second component has a per…
Keck adaptive optics imaging with a physical resolution of 0.4 AU resolves the inner (15-80 AU) disk of AU Mic (GJ 803), the nearest known scattered light disk to Earth. The inner disk is asymmetric and possesses a sharp change in structure at 35 AU. The disk also shows spatially localized enhancements and deficits at 25-40 AU separations. The overall morphology points to the influence of unseen larger bodies and resembles structures expected from recent planet formation. AU Mic is coeval with the archetypical debris disk system beta Pic, and the similarities between their two disks point to s…
We present high-resolution infrared spectra of four YSOs (T Tau N, T Tau S, RNO 91, and HL Tau). The spectra exhibit narrow absorption lines of 12CO, 13CO, and C18O as well as broad emission lines of gas phase12CO. The narrow absorption lines of CO are shown to originate from the colder circumstellar gas. We find that the line of sight gas column densities resulting from the CO absorption lines are much higher than expected for the measured extinction for each source and suggest the gas to dust ratio is measuring the dust settling and/or grain coagulation in these extended disks. We provide a …
A detailed understanding of the physics of star and planet formation requires study of individual objects as well as statistical assessment of global properties and evolutionary trends. Observational investigations of circumstellar material surrounding young stars have matured to the point that both spectral energy distributions sampled over more than four decades in wavelength and spatially resolved images or interferometric visibilities at limited optical/infrared and sub-/millimeter wavelengths are becoming available, though for few individual objects at present. Data on star/disk systems c…
The spectral and extinction properties of 14 pre-main sequence candidates in the central part of the very young open cluster NGC 6383 were investigated. None of these stars shows evidence for anomalous circumstellar extinction. However, six out of 14 programme stars do show an infrared excess, indicative of the presence of circumstellar dust, heated up by the central star. One of these stars (number 4), also shows Halpha in emission and shows some indications for the presence of circumstellar gas in its spectrum, and might therefore be a newly identified Herbig Ae star.
There is strong evidence that the planets in the solar system evolved from a disk-shaped solar nebula ~4.56 Gyr ago. By studying young stars in various evolutionary stages, one aims at tracing back the early history of the solar system, in particular the timescales for disk dissipation and for the formation of planetary systems. We used the VLT & ISAAC, and ESA's Infrared Space Observatory & ISOCAM to study the circumstellar environment of young low-mass stars.
We discover a new dynamical mechanism that significantly enhances the growth of Rayleigh-Taylor fingers developed near the contact interface between the supernova ejecta and swept-up ambient gas in young supernova remnants if the supernova remnant expands into a clumpy (cloudy) circumstellar medium. Our numerical simulation demonstrates that large Rayleigh-Taylor fingers can obtain a sufficient terminal velocity to protrude through the forward shock front by taking extra kinetic energy from vorticies generated by shock-cloud interactions. We suggest this mechanism as a means to generate the as…
We present new evolutionary models for Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) progenitors, introducing mass-stripping effect on a main-sequence (MS) or slightly evolved companion star by winds from a mass-accreting white dwarf (WD). The mass-stripping attenuates the rate of mass transfer from the companion to the WD. As a result, quite a massive MS companion can avoid forming a common envelope and increase the WD mass up to the SN Ia explosion. Including the mass-stripping effect, we follow binary evolutions of various WD + MS systems and obtain the parameter region in the initial donor mass - orbital peri…
We detect emission from multiple low-excitation ro-vibrational transitions of OH from the two Herbig Ae stars AB Aurigae and MWC 758 in the 3.0 - 3.7 micron wavelength range (L-band), using the NIRSPEC instrument on Keck II. The inner radius for the emitting region in both stars is close to 1 AU. We compare an optically thin LTE model and a thin-wedge fluorescence model, finding rotational temperatures of 650 - 800 K and OH abundances of 10^42 - 10^45 molecules for the two stars. Comparisons with current chemical models support the fluorescence excitation model for AB Aurigae and possibly MWC …
We present first results of our simulations of magnetic fields in the formation of single and binary stars using a recently developed method for incorporating Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) into the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. An overview of the method is presented before discussing the effect of magnetic fields on the formation of circumstellar discs around young stars. We find that the presence of magnetic fields during the disc formation process can lead to significantly smaller and less massive discs which are much less prone to gravitational instability. Similarly in the cas…
High-quality K-band spectra of point sources, deeply embedded in massive star-forming regions, have revealed a population of 20 young massive stars showing no photospheric absorption lines, but only emission lines. The K-band spectra exhibit one or more features commonly associated with massive Young Stellar Objects surrounded by circumstellar material: a very red color (J-K) = 2, CO bandhead emission, hydrogen emission lines (sometimes doubly peaked), and FeII and/or MgII emission lines. The CO emission comes from a relatively dense (~10^10 cm^(-3)) and hot (T ~ 2000-5000 K) region, sufficien…
We report the results of deep infrared observations of brown dwarf candidates in the Trapezium cluster in Orion. Analysis of the JHK color-color diagram indicates that a large fraction (approx 65% +/- 15%) of the observed sources exhibit infrared excess emission. This suggests the extreme youth of these objects and in turn, provides strong independent confirmation of the existence of a large population of substellar objects in the cluster. Moreover, this suggests that the majority of these substellar objects are presently surrounded by circumstellar disks similar to the situation for the stell…
There is increasing evidence that low mass stars with circumstellar disks can be born close to massive stars, in some cases within tenths of a pc. If the disks have lifetimes greater than those of the more massive stars, they are exposed to the radiation fields and gas flows from the late evolutionary phases and supernovae of the massive stars. The fast flows from supernovae are likely to give some stripping of mass from the disks, but do not typically lead to complete disruption of the disks. In the slow wind from a red supergiant star, there is the possibility of gravitational accretion of w…
We investigate the possibility to detect giant planets that are still embedded in young circumstellar disks. Based on models with different stellar, planetary, and disk masses, and different radial positions of the planet we analyze the resulting submillimeter appearance of these systems. We find that the influence of the planet on the spectral energy distribution could not be distinguished from that of other disk parameters. However, dust reemission images of the disks show that the hot region in the proximity of a young planet, along with the gap, could indeed be detected and mapped with the…
We determine the distribution of circumstellar disk masses in the young (~0.3 Myr) cluster NGC 2024 by imaging a 2.5'x2.5' region in 3mm continuum emission to an RMS noise level of ~0.75 mJy/beam with the Owens Valley Millimeter Array. The mosaic encompasses 147 K-band sources as well as the molecular ridge seen previously in dust continuum emission. We detect 10 point-like sources in 3mm continuum emission above the level of 5-sigma within the unit gain region of the mosaic. One of these sources corresponds to the near-IR source IRS 2, an early B-type star. Two other sources are tentatively a…
We show that the optically-thick dusty envelopes surrounding young high-mass stars are subject to the photon bubble instability. The infrared radiation passing through the envelope amplifies magnetosonic disturbances, with growth rates in our local numerical radiation MHD calculations that are consistent with a linear analysis. Modes with wavelengths comparable to the gas pressure scale height grow by more than two orders of magnitude in a thousand years, reaching non-linear amplitudes within the envelope lifetime. If the magnetic pressure in the envelope exceeds the gas pressure, the instabil…
Results of an international campaign to photometrically monitor the unique pre-main sequence eclipsing object KH 15D are reported. An updated ephemeris for the eclipse is derived that incorporates a slightly revised period of 48.36 d. There is some evidence that the orbital period is actually twice that value, with two eclipses occurring per cycle. The extraordinary depth (~3.5 mag) and duration (~18 days) of the eclipse indicate that it is caused by circumstellar matter, presumably the inner portion of a disk. The eclipse has continued to lengthen with time and the central brightness reversal…
We present new K- and L'-band imaging of a representative sample of members of the young 3-5 Myr old sigma Orionis cluster. We identified objects with (K-L') excess by analysing colour-colour diagrams and comparing the observations with empirical main-sequence colours. The derived disk frequency depends on the method used: (54 +/- 15)% if measured directly from the JHKL' colour-colour diagram; or (46 +/-14)% if excesses are computed with respect to predicted photospheric colours (according to the objects spectral types, 2-sigma excess detections). We compare the (K-L') excess with other indica…
(Abridged) We have completed the first systematic survey for disks around spectroscopically identified young brown dwarfs and very low mass stars. We have obtained L'-band (3.8 um) imaging for 38 very cool objects in IC 348 and Taurus. Our targets span spectral types from M6 to M9.5 (~100 to ~15 Mjup). Using the objects' measured spectral types and extinctions, we find that most of our sample (77%+/-15%) possess intrinsic IR excesses, indicative of disks. Because the excesses are modest, conventional analyses using only IR colors would have missed most of the sources with excesses. The observe…
We present 3-5 micron VLT-ISAAC spectroscopy searching for evidence of methanol ices in edge-on disks of young embedded stars. Examples include the disks of L1489 IRS in Taurus and CRBR 2422.8-3423 in Ophiuchus, the last of which has the highest column density of solid CO known toward a YSO. We find no unambiguous evidence for abundant methanol in the observed disks, but give strict upper limits. Several additional low-mass sources in the Serpens and Chameleon molecular clouds exhibit abundant solid methanol, although it is not clear if the ice is associated with a disk or with the envelope. T…
The extinction law and the variation of colour excess with position, luminosity as well as spectral class in young open star clusters NGC 663, NGC869, NGC 884, NGC 1502, NGC 1893, NGC 2244, NGC 2264, NGC 6611, Tr 14, Tr 15,Tr 16, Coll 228, Tr 37 and Be 86 have been studied. The difference in the minimum and maximum values of E(B-V) of cluster members has been considered as a measure of the presence of non-uniform gas and dust inside the clusters. Its value ranges from 0.22 to 1.03 mag in clusters under study, which indicates that non-uniform extinction is present in all the clusters. It has be…
We present a model of the circumstellar environment of the so-called ``Butterfly Star'' in Taurus (IRAS 04302+2247). The appearance of this young stellar object is dominated by a large circumstellar disk seen edge-on and the light scattering lobes above the disk. The model is based on multi-wavelength continuum observations: Millimeter maps and high-resolution near-infrared images obtained with HST/NICMOS. It was found that the disk and envelope parameters are comparable with those of the circumstellar environment of other young stellar objects. A main result is that the dust properties must b…
High-quality K-band spectra of strongly reddened point sources, deeply embedded in (ultra-) compact HII regions, have revealed a population of 20 young massive stars showing no photospheric absorption lines, but sometimes strong Br-gamma emission. The Br-gamma equivalent widths occupy a wide range (from about 1 to over 100 A); the line widths of 100-200 km/s indicate a circumstellar rather than a nebular origin. The K-band spectra exhibit one or more features commonly associated with massive young stellar objects (YSOs) surrounded by circumstellar material: a very red colour (J-K) > 2, CO band…
We present a survey of X-ray emission from young stars in the Sword of Orion star-formation region using XMM-Newton's EPIC detectors. We find over 850 X-ray sources, of which more than 700 have near-infrared counterparts consistent with being young stars. The survey enables statistical investigation of the dependence of X-ray emission properties of young stars on fundamental stellar parameters (mass, rotation, age) and environmental features (circumstellar disk, active accretion, circumstellar absorption), and study of structure size in individual coronae through analysis of large flares.
Recent spectral observations by the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) reveal that some discs around young ($\sim {\rm few} \times 10^6$ yr old) stars have remarkably sharp transitions to a low density inner region in which much of the material has been cleared away. It has been recognized that the most plausible mechanism for the sharp transition at a specific radius is the gravitational influence of a massive planet. This raises the question of whether the planet can also account for the hole extending all the way to the star. Using high resolution numerical simulations, we show that Jupiter-mass…
We report on the observation of hot water vapor (steam) in the inner AU of a young massive star located in the star-forming region IRAS 08576-4334. The water lines are detected in a medium resolution (R=10,000) K-band spectrum taken by the infrared spectrometer ISAAC mounted on the VLT-ANTU. The water vapor is at a mean temperature of 1565+/-510 K, cooler than the hot CO found in the same object, which is at 1660K and the column density is N(H2O)=(2.5 +/- 0.4)x1E18 cm-2. The profile of both H2O and CO lines is best reproduced by the emission from a Keplerian disk. To interpret the data, we als…
Most, if not all, stars are now believed to produce energetic outflows during their formation. Yet, almost 20 years after the discovery of bipolar outflows from young stars, the origins of this violent phenomenon are not well understood. One of the difficulties of probing the outflow process, particularly in the case of massive embedded stars, is a deficit of high spatial resolution observations. Here, we present sub-arcsecond-resolution mid-infrared images of one massive young stellar object, AFGL 2591, and its immediate surroundings. Our images, at 11.7, 12.5 and 18.0 microns, reveal a knot …
We examine the ability of photoevaporative disk winds to explain the low-velocity components observed in the forbidden line spectra of low-mass T Tauri stars. Using the analytic model of Shu, Johnstone, & Hollenbach (1993) and Hollenbach et al. (1994) as a basis, we examine the characteristics of photoevaporative outflows with hydrodynamic simulations. General results from the simulations agree well with the analytic predictions, although some small differences are present. Most importantly, the flow of material from the disk surface develops at smaller radii than in the analytic approximation…
We use a Monte Carlo code to generate synthetic near-IR reflection nebulae that resemble those (normally associated with a bipolar outflow cavity) seen towards massive young stellar objects (YSOs). The 2D axi-symmetric calculations use an analytic expression for a flattened infalling rotating envelope with a bipolar cavity representing an outflow. We are interested in which aspects of the circumstellar density distribution can be constrained by servations of these reflection nebulae. We therefore keep the line of sight optical depth constant in the model grid, as this is often constrained inde…
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-object Spectrometer (NICMOS) observations of the reflection nebulosity associated with the T Tauri star HH 30. The images show the scattered light pattern characteristic of a highly inclined, optically thick disk with a prominent dustlane whose width decreases with increasing wavelength. The reflected nebulosity exhibits a lateral asymmetry in the upper lobe on the opposite side to that reported in previously published Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) images. The radiation transfer model which most closely reproduces t…
We report the detection of [Ne II] emission at 12.81 micron in four out of the six optically thick dust disks observed as part of the FEPS Spitzer Legacy program. In addition, we detect a H I(7-6) emission line at 12.37 micron from the source RXJ1852.3-3700. Detections of [Ne II] lines are favored by low mid-infrared excess emission. Both stellar X-rays and extreme UV (EUV) photons can sufficiently ionize the disk surface to reproduce the observed line fluxes, suggesting that emission from Ne+ originates in the hot disk atmosphere. On the other hand, the H I(7-6) line is not associated with th…
We have mapped the eta Chamaeleontis young stellar association in the far-infrared with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. All sixteen members within the map region were detected at 24 um, along with five members at 70 um and two at 160 um. Ten stars show far-infrared excess emission indicating the presence of circumstellar disks; six of these have central clearings as evidenced by the onset of excess emission at >5 um. No new infrared excess sources are identified among the 113 2MASS field stars with 24 um photometry but not seen as X-ray sourc…
A study of star formation is carried out on 35 giant extragalactic HII regions (GEHRs) in seven galaxies using optical photometric data in BVR broad bands and in the emission line of H alpha. Interstellar extinction, metallicity and nebular contributions to the broad bands are estimated using spectroscopic data on these objects. Dimensionless diagrams involving B-V and V-R colors and the flux ratio of Balmer line to B band continuum are used to study star formation. The cluster colors indicate reduced extinction towards stellar continuum compared to the values derived from Balmer lines for the…
Context: the observations of the proplyds in the Orion Nebula Cluster, showing clear evidence of ongoing photoevaporation, have provided a clear proof about the role of the externally induced photoevaporation in the evolution of circumstellar disks. NGC 6611 is an open cluster suitable to study disk photoevaporation, thanks to its large population of massive members and of stars with disk. In a previous work, we obtained evidence of the influence of the strong UV field generated by the massive cluster members on the evolution of disks around low-mass Pre-Main Sequence members. That work was ba…
Using the infrared photometry data extracted from the 2MASS, IRAS and MSX databases, 50 suspected young stellar objects (YSOs) are selected from about 37500 infrared objects in the 3x3 deg area with the center at Galactic longitude 142.5 deg and latitude +1.0 deg, in the vicinity of the young stellar object GL 490 in the dark cloud DoH 942 (Dobashi et al. 2005). The spectral energy distributions between 700 nm and 100 mum suggest that most of the selected objects may be YSOs of classes I and II. In the color-magnitude diagram K_s vs. H-K_s the suspected YSOs occupy an area right of the main se…
A sample of 14 pre-main sequence visual binary systems in southern star-forming regions were imaged at 2 um with the Keck I telescope to search for tertiary companions, scattered-light disks, and compact nebulae at linear scales of 5-100 AU. Speckle holography was used to produce images with diffraction-limited resolution and high dynamic range, and photometry in four filters between J (1.25 um) and L' (3.8 um) was used to provide a diagnostic of the infrared excess. Of the 14 visual binary systems studied, 9 contain components which show evidence for resolved structure. Two of them (WSB 18 an…
We present modeling results for six of the eleven deeply embedded systems from our sub-arcsecond 2.7 mm wavelength continuum interferometric survey. The modeling, performed in the uv plane, assumes dust properties, allows for a power-law density profile, uses a self-consistent, luminosity conserving temperature profile, and has an embedded point source to represent a circumstellar disk. Even though we have the highest spatial resolution to date at these wavelengths, only the highest signal-to-noise systems can adequately constrain the simple self-similar collapse models. Of the six sources mod…
Analysis of the low resolution UV(IUE) spectra of 15 hot post-AGB candidates is presented. The UV(IUE) spectra of 10 stars suggest partial obscuration of the hot stars due to circumstellar dust. The reddened continua of these 10 stars were used to model and estimate the circumstellar extinction. The circumstellar extinction law was found to be linear in $λ^{-1}$ in the case of IRAS13266-5551 (CPD-55 5588), IRAS14331-6435 (Hen3-1013), IRAS16206-5956 (SAO 243756), IRAS17074-1845 (Hen3-1347), IRAS17311-4924 (Hen3-1428), IRAS18023-3409 (LSS 4634), IRAS18062+2410 (SAO 85766), IRAS18371-3159 (LSE 63…
We report the discovery in NIR with SofI at the NTT of a resolved circumstellar dust disk around a 2MASS source at the periphery of the rho Ophiuchi dark cloud. We present follow-up observations in J, H, and Ks-band obtained with ISAAC at the VLT, under 0.4"-seeing conditions, which unveil a dark dust lane oriented East-West between two characteristic northern and southern reflection nebulae. This new circumstellar dust disk has a radius of 2.15" (300 AU at 140 pc), and a width of 1.2" (170 AU at 140 pc). Thanks to its location at the periphery of the dense cores, it suffers small foreground v…
The symbiotic Mira, RX Pup, shows long-term variations in its mean light level due to variable obscuration by circumstellar dust. The last increase in extinction towards the Mira, between 1995 and 2000, has been accompanied by large changes in the degree of polarization in the optical and red spectral range. The lack of any obvious associated changes in the position angle may indicate the polarization variations are driven by changes in the properties of the dust grains (e.g. variable quantity of dust and variable particle size distribution, due to dust grain formation and growth) rather than …
We present HST/NICMOS observations with 0.1" (15 AU) resolution of six young stellar objects in the Taurus star-formation region. The targets of our survey are three Class I IRAS sources (IRAS 04016+2610, IRAS 04248+2612, and IRAS 04302+2247) and three low-luminosity stars (DG Tau B, Haro 6-5B, and CoKu Tau/1) associated with Herbig Haro jets. The broad-band images show that the near-infrared radiation from these sources is dominated by light scattered from dusty circumstellar material distributed in a region 10 - 15 times the size of our solar system. Although the detailed morphologies of the…
A new method to derive age differences between the various super star clusters observed in starburst galaxies using the two color diagram (B-H) vs (H-K) is presented. This method offers a quick and easy way to differentiate very young and intermediate age stellar populations even if data on extinction are unavailable. In this case, discrimination of regions younger and older than 4 Myr is feasible. With the availability of data on extinction, the time resolution can be improved significantly. The application of the method to the starbursting system Arp 299 is presented. The validity of the met…
We analyze ISO archive data of the nearby bright emission-line star 51 Oph, previously classified as a proto-planetary system similar to beta Pic. The infrared spectrum reveals the presence of gas-phase emission bands of hot (approx 850 K) CO, CO_2, H_2O and NO. In addition to this, partially crystalline silicate dust is present. The solid-state bands and the energy distribution are indicative of dust that has formed recently, rather than of debris dust. The presence of hot molecular gas and the composition of the circumstellar dust are highly unusual for a young star and are reminiscent of wh…
Recent results from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have resolved starbursts as collections of compact young stellar clusters. Here we present a photometric catalogue of the young stellar clusters in the nuclear starburst of M82, observed with the HST WFPC2 in Halpha (F656N) and in four optical broad-band filters. We identify 197 young super stellar clusters. The compactness and high density of the sources led us to develop specific techniques to measure their sizes. Strong extinction lanes divide the starburst into five different zones and we provide a catalogue of young super star clusters for …
Recent observational studies on galaxies in distant clusters discovered a significant fraction of possible dusty starburst galaxies with the so-called `e(a)' spectra that are characterized by strong H$δ$ absorption and relatively modest [OII] emission. We numerically investigate spectroscopic and photometric evolution of dusty starburst galaxies in order to clarify the origin of the e(a) spectra. We found that if a young starburst population is preferentially obscured by dust than an old one in a dusty starburst galaxy, the galaxy shows e(a) spectrum. It is therefore confirmed that the selecti…
General results from a 3-5 micron spectroscopic survey of nearby low-mass young stellar objects are presented. L and M-band spectra have been obtained of \~50 low mass embedded young stars using the ISAAC spectrometer mounted on UT1-Antu at Paranal Observatory. For the first time, a consistent census of the CO, H2O ices and the minor ice species CH3OH and OCN- and warm CO gas present around young stars is obtained, using large number statistics and resolving powers of up to R=10000. The molecular structure of circumstellar CO ices, the depletion of gaseous CO onto grains in protoplanetary disk…
We present new imaging and spectroscopy of the post-red supergiant binary AFGL 4106. Coronographic imaging in H-alpha reveals the shape and extent of the ionized region in the circumstellar envelope (CSE). Echelle spectroscopy with the slit covering almost the entire extent of the CSE is used to derive the physical conditions in the ionized region and the optical depth of the dust contained within the CSE. The dust shell around AFGL 4106 is clumpy and mixed with ionized gas. H-alpha and [N II] emission is brightest from a thin bow-shaped layer just outside of the detached dust shell. On-going …
We present new multiwavelength submillimeter continuum measurements of the circumstellar dust around 48 young stars in the $ρ$ Ophiuchus dark clouds. Supplemented with previous 1.3 mm observations of an additional 99 objects from the literature, the statistical distributions of disk masses and submillimeter colors are calculated and compared to those in the Taurus-Auriga region. These basic submillimeter properties of young stellar objects in both environments are shown to be essentially identical. As with their Taurus counterparts, the $ρ$ Oph circumstellar dust properties are shown to evolve…
We present 7 mm, 1.3 cm and 3.6 cm continuum observations made with the Very Large Array toward a sample of ten luminous IRAS sources that are believed to be regions of massive star formation. We detect compact 7 mm emission in four of these objects: IRAS 18089-1732(1), IRAS 18182-1433, IRAS 18264-1152 and IRAS 18308-0841 and for the first time find that these IRAS sources are associated with double or triple radio sources separated by a few arcseconds. We discuss the characteristics of these sources based mostly on their spectral indices and find that their nature is diverse. Some features in…
