We study the instability of a doubly quantized vortex topologically imprinted on $^{23}$Na condensate, as reported in recent experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{93}, 160406 (2004)]. We have performed numerical simulations using three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with classical thermal noise. Splitting of a doubly quantized vortex turns out to be a process that is very sensitive to the presence of thermal atoms. We show that roton-like excitations are thermally induced in a two-dimensional dilute Bose gas as a consequence of the strong phase fluctuations in two dimensions. At low momentum, the roton-like excitations lead for small enough temperatures to an anomalous phonon spectrum with a temperature dependent exponent reminiscent of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We study the energetic and dynamic stability of coreless vortices in nonrotated spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates, trapped with a three-dimensional optical potential and a Ioffe-Pritchard field. The stability of stationary vortex states is investigated by solving the corresponding Bogoliubov equations. We consider a strongly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in a spherical harmonic trap. The system is treated by applying a slave-boson representation for hard-core bosons. We propose to the create vortices in spin-1 condensates via magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. Starting with a polarized condensate prepared under large axial magnetic field, we show that by gradually inverting the field, population transfer among different spin states can be realized in a controlled manner. Under optimal condition, we generate a doubly quantized vortex state containing nearly all atoms in the condensate. We study the stability of singly- and doubly-quantized vortex states of harmonically trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs) by calculating the low-lying excitations of these condensates.
