The exclusive reactions $γp \to K^{*0} Σ^+(1189)$ and $γp \to K^{0} π^{0}Σ^+(1189)$, leading to the p 4$π^{0}$ final state, have been measured with a tagged photon beam for incident energies from threshold up to 2.5 GeV. The experiment has been performed at the tagged photon facility of the ELSA accelerator (Bonn). The Crystal Barrel and TAPS detectors were combined to a photon detector system of almost 4$π$ geometrical acceptance. Differential and total cross sections are reported. At energies close to the threshold, a flat angular distribution has been observed for the reaction $γp\to K^{0} π^{0}Σ^+$ suggesting dominant s-channel production. $Σ^*(1385)$ and higher lying hyperon states have been observed. An enhancement in the forward direction in the angular distributions of the reaction $γp \to K^{*0}Σ^+$ indicates a $t$-channel exchange contribution to the reaction mechanism. The experimental data are in reasonable agreement with recent theoretical predictions.
The CLAS collaboration has recently completed first measurements of the double polarization observables C_x and C_z for the reactions K^+Lambda and K^+Sigma^o photoproduction. C_x and C_z are the beam-recoil polarization asymmetries measuring the polarization transfer from incoming circularly polarized photons to the outgoing hyperons along two directions in the reaction's production plane. The Lambda is found to be nearly maximally polarized along the direction of the incident photon's polarization for forward-going kaons. Polarization transfer to the Sigma^o is different from the Lambda case…
Differential and total cross-sections for photoproduction of gamma proton to proton pi0 omega and gamma proton to Delta+ omega were determined from measurements of the CB-ELSA experiment, performed at the electron accelerator ELSA in Bonn. The measurements covered the photon energy range from the production threshold up to 3GeV.
The $Σ(1385)$ resonance, or $Σ^*$, is well-known as part of the standard baryon decuplet with spin $J=3/2$. Measurements of the reaction $γp \to K^+ Σ^{*0}$ are difficult to extract due to overlap with the nearby $Λ(1405)$ resonance. However, the reaction $γn \to K^+ Σ^{*-}$ has no overlap with the $Λ(1405)$ due to its charge. Here we report the first measurement of cross sections and beam asymmetries for photoproduction of the \sigs from a deuteron target. % where the $K^+$ and $π^-$ are detected in the LEPS spectrometer. The cross sections at forward angles range from 0.4 to 1.2 $μ$b, with a…
Many measurements of pseudoscalar mesons with S = 0 photoproduced on the proton have been made recently. These new data are particularly useful in theoretical investigations of nucleon resonances. How the new data from various labs complement each other and help fill in the gaps in the world data set is disscussed, with a glance at measurements to be made in the near future. Some theoretical techniques used to explain the data are briefly described.
The Sigma beam asymmetry for positive pion photoproduction on the proton has been measured over an angular range of 40-170 deg at photon energies from 0.8 to 1.5 GeV. The resulting data set includes 237 accurate points, 136 of these belonging to an almost unexplored domain above 1.05 GeV. Data of such high precision provide severe constraints for partial wave analyses. The influence of this experiment on the GW multipole analysis is demonstrated. Significant changes are found in multipoles connected to the S31(1620) and P13(1720) resonances. Comparisons using the MAID analysis are also present…
Differential cross sections for the reaction gamma p -> eta-prime p have been measured with the CLAS spectrometer and a tagged photon beam with energies from 1.527 to 2.227 GeV. The results reported here possess much greater accuracy than previous measurements. Analyses of these data indicate for the first time the coupling of the etaprime N channel to both the S_11(1535) and P_11(1710) resonances, known to couple strongly to the eta N channel in photoproduction on the proton, and the importance of j=3/2 resonances in the process.
Photoproduction reactions occur when the electromagnetic field of a relativistic heavy ion interacts with another heavy ion. The STAR collaboration presents a measurement of rho^0 and direct pi^+pi^- photoproduction in ultra-peripheral relativistic heavy ion collisions at sqrt(s_{NN})=200 GeV. We observe both exclusive photoproduction and photoproduction accompanied by mutual Coulomb excitation. We find a coherent cross-section of sigma(AuAu) -> Au^*Au^*rho^0 = 530 pm 19 (stat.) pm 57 (syst.) mb, in accord with theoretical calculations based on a Glauber approach, but considerably below the pr…
We report the exclusive photoproduction cross sections for the Sigma(1385), Lambda(1405), and Lambda(1520) in the reactions gamma + p -> K+ + Y* using the CLAS detector for energies from near the respective production thresholds up to a center-of-mass energy W of 2.85 GeV. The differential cross sections are integrated to give the total exclusive cross sections for each hyperon. Comparisons are made to current theoretical models based on the effective Lagrangian approach and fitted to previous data. The accuracy of these models is seen to vary widely. The cross sections for the Lambda(1405) re…
Photoproduction of pi0 mesons was studied with the Crystal-Barrel detector at ELSA for incident energies from 300 MeV to 3 GeV. Differential cross sections d sigma /d Omega, d sigma/d t, and the total cross section are presented. For E(gamma) < 3 GeV, the angular distributions agree well with the SAID parametrization. At photon energies above 1.5 GeV, a strong forward peaking indicates t-channel exchange to be the dominant process. The rapid variations of the cross section with energy and angle indicate production of resonances. An interpretation of the data within the Bonn-Gatchina partial wa…
We report here differential cross sections for the reaction $γp \to K^{*0}Σ^+$ for the first time with high statistics. The measurements were done using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab. Data were taken at 3.115 GeV electron beam energy using tagged photons incident upon a liquid hydrogen target. In addition, our analysis provides information about nucleon resonances and their couplings to $K^*$ decay. Our data will be used to test predictions of theoretical models of K$^*$ production, and to provide constraints on the $K^*ΣN$ coupling constant used in these mode…
Differential cross sections for eta photoproduction off protons have been measured at E_gamma = 1.6 - 2.4 GeV in the backward direction. A bump structure has been observed above 2.0 GeV in the total energy. No such bump is observed in cross sections for eta', omega and pi0 photoproductions. It is inferred that this unique structure in eta photoproduction is due to a baryon resonance with a large portion of ss-bar strongly coupled to the etaN channel.
We investigate the influence of new GRAAL Sigma-beam asymmetry measurements on the neutron in multipole fits to the single-pion photoproduction database. Results are compared to those found with the addition of a double-polarization quantity associated with the sum rule.
One of the remaining problems within the standard model is to gain a good understanding of the low energy regime of QCD, where perturbative methods fail. One key towards a better understanding is baryon spectroscopy. Unfortunately, in the past most baryon spectroscopy data have been obtained only using $π$ N scattering. To gain access to resonances with small $π$ N partial width, photoproduction experiments, investigating various final states, provide essential information. In order to extract the contributing resonances, partial wave analyses need to be performed. Here, the complete experimen…
Quasi-free photoproduction of eta-mesons from the deuteron has been measured at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz microtron MAMI with the photon spectrometer TAPS for incident photon energies from the production threshold at 630 MeV up to 820 MeV. In a fully exclusive measurement eta-mesons and recoil nucleons were detected in coincidence. At incident photon energies above the production threshold on the free nucleon, where final state interaction effects are negligible, an almost constant ratio of sigma(n)/sigma(p)=0.66+/-0.10 was found. At lower incident photon energies the ratio rises…
A study of the partial-wave content of the $γp\to η^\prime p$ reaction in the fourth resonance region is presented, which has been prompted by new measurements of polarization observables for that process. Using the Bonn-Gatchina partial-wave formalism, the incorporation of new data indicates that the $N(1895)1/2^-$, $N(1900)3/2^+$, $N(2100)1/2^+$, and $N(2120)3/2^-$ are the most significant contributors to the photoproduction process. New results for the branching ratios of the decays of these more prominent resonances to $Nη^\prime$ final states are provided; such branches have not been indi…
This paper reports on a measurement of the double-polarization observable G in $π^0$ photoproduction off the proton using the CBELSA/TAPS experiment at the ELSA accelerator in Bonn. The observable G is determined from reactions of linearly-polarized photons with longitudinally-polarized protons. The polarized photons are produced by bremsstrahlung off a properly oriented diamond radiator. A frozen spin butanol target provides the polarized protons. The data cover the photon energy range from 617 to 1325 MeV and a wide angular range. The experimental results for G are compared to predictions by…
Near threshold omega meson photoproduction is studied with the CBELSA/TAPS experiment at the ELSA accelerator of Bonn University. Single as well as double polarization observables are measured using either linear or circular polarized photon beams and a longitudinal polarized proton target.
In this work we investigate the exclusive photoproduction of J/psi and the radially excited psi(2S) state off nucleon in proton-proton collisions. The theoretical framework considered in the analysis is the light-cone dipole formalism and predictions are done for proton-proton collisions at the CERN-LHC energy of 7 TeV. The theoretical uncertainties are investigated and comparison is done to the recent LHCb Collaboration data for the exclusive charmonium production.
The reaction gamma + p -> K+ + Sigma + pi was used to determine the invariant mass distributions or "line shapes" of the Sigma+ pi-, Sigma- pi+ and Sigma0 pi0 final states, from threshold at 1328 MeV/c^2 through the mass range of the Lambda(1405) and the Lambda(1520). The measurements were made with the CLAS system at Jefferson Lab using tagged real photons, for center-of-mass energies 1.95 < W < 2.85 GeV. The three mass distributions differ strongly in the vicinity of the I=0 Λ(1405), indicating the presence of substantial I=1 strength in the reaction. Background contributions to the data fro…
Revised analysis of $Σ$ beam asymmetry for $η$ photoproduction on the free proton reveals a resonant structure at $W\sim 1.69$ GeV. Comparison of experimental data with multipole decomposition based on the E429 solution of the SAID partial wave analysis and including narrow states, suggests a narrow ($Γ\leq 15$ MeV) resonance. Possible candidates are $P_{11}$, $P_{13}$, or $D_{13}$ resonances. The result is considered in conjunction with the recent evidence for a bump-like structure at $W\sim 1.67 - 1.68$ GeV in quasi-free $η$ photoproduction on the neutron.
New high-precision total and differential cross sections for $η$ and $η'$ photoproduction on the proton obtained by the A2 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron are presented. The data for $η$ photoproduction demonstrate a cusp at the energy W$\sim$1.9~GeV. Furthermore, we present a new version of the $η$MAID model for $η$ and $η'$ photoproduction. The model includes 23 nucleon resonances parametrized with Breit-Wigner shapes. The background is described by vector and axial-vector meson exchanges in the $t$ channel using the Regge phenomenology. Parameters of the resonances were obtained from a…
The ALICE Collaboration has measured the energy dependence of exclusive photoproduction of $J/ψ$ vector mesons off proton targets in ultra-peripheral p-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV. The e$^+$e$^-$ and $μ^+μ^-$ decay channels are used to measure the cross section as a function of the rapidity of the $J/ψ$ in the range $-2.5 < y < 2.7$, corresponding to an energy in the $γ$p centre-of-mass in the interval $40 < W_{γ\mathrm{p}}<550$ GeV. The measurements, which are consistent with a power law dependence of the exclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduc…
We analyse data on forward eta-meson photoproduction off a proton target and extract the eta to gamma gamma decay width utilizing the Primakoff effect. The hadronic amplitude that enters into our analysis is strongly constrained because it is fixed from a global fit to available gamma p to p eta data for differential cross sections and polarizations. We compare our results with present information on the two-photon eta-decay from the literature. We provide predictions for future PrimEx experiments at Jefferson Laboratory in order to motivate further studies.
Beam-helicity asymmetries for the two-pion-photoproduction reaction gamma + p --> p pi+ pi- have been studied for the first time in the resonance region for center-of-mass energies between 1.35 GeV and 2.30 GeV. The experiment was performed at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer using circularly polarized tagged photons incident on an unpolarized hydrogen target. Beam-helicity-dependent angular distributions of the final-state particles were measured. The large cross-section asymmetries exhibit strong sensitivity to the kinematics and dynamics of the reaction. The data a…
We present an overview of the GW SAID group effort to analyze on new pion photoproduction on both proton- and neutron-targets. The main database contribution came from the recent CLAS and MAMI unpolarized and polarized measurements. The differential cross section for the processes gamma n --> pi- p was extracted from new measurements accounting for Fermi motion effects in the impulse approximation (IA) as well as NN and piN effects beyond the IA. The EM coupling results are compared to other recent studies.
Contributions of $D$ waves to physical observables for neutral pion photoproduction from the proton in the near-threshold region are studied and means to isolate them are proposed. Various approaches to describe the multipoles are employed --a phenomenological one, a unitary one, and heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The results of these approaches are compared and found to yield essentially the same answers. $D$ waves are seen to enter together with $S$ waves in a way that any means which attempt to obtain the $E_{0+}$ multipole accurately must rely on knowledge of $D$ waves and that c…
We present the first measurement at the LHC of exclusive J/$ψ$ photoproduction off protons, in ultra-peripheral proton-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV. Events are selected with a dimuon pair produced either in the rapidity interval, in the laboratory frame, $2.5<y<4$ (p-Pb) or $-3.6<y<-2.6$ (Pb--p), and no other particles observed in the ALICE acceptance. The measured cross sections $σ(γ+ {\rm p} \rightarrow J/ψ+ {\rm p})$ are 33.2 $\pm$ 2.2 (stat) $\pm$ 3.1 (syst) $\pm$ 0.7 (theo) nb in p-Pb and 284 $\pm$ 36 (stat) $^{+27}_{-32}$ (syst) $\pm$ 26 (theo) nb in Pb-p collisions. W…
Analysis of the partial wave structure of gamma p --> pi0 eta p reaction is presented in the energy region from threshold up to the total center of mass energy W = 1.9 GeV. Angular distributions measured with the Crystal Ball/TAPS hermetic detector system at the Mainz Microtron MAMI are expanded in terms of spherical harmonics. The relation of the extracted moments to the partial wave structure of the reaction amplitude is discussed and compared with predictions from model calculations.
The exclusive $Υ$ photoproduction in proton-proton and proton - nucleus collisions at LHC energies is investigated using the color dipole formalism and considering different models for the $Υ$ wave function and forward dipole - target scattering amplitude. Our goal is to update the color dipole predictions and estimate the theoretical uncertainty present in these predictions. We present predictions for the kinematical ranges probed by the ALICE, CMS and LHCb Collaborations.
Measurement results of photoproduced excited hyperon states using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab are shown. The invariant mass distribution of the Lambda(1405) has recently been shown to be different for each of the three Sigma pi channels that it decays to, showing that there is prominent interference between the isospin I=0 and I=1 isospin amplitudes. Measurements of the differential and total cross sections of the three hyperons Lambda(1405), Sigma0(1385), and Lambda(1520) are presented and compared. Prospects of future studies using a 12 GeV beam with the GlueX detector are briefly giv…
It has recently been proven that the invariance of observables with respect to angle dependent phase rotations of reaction amplitudes mixes multipoles changing also their relative strength [1]. All contemporary partial wave analyses (PWA) in $η$ photoproduction on protons, either energy dependent (ED) [2-5] or single energy (SE) [6] do not take this effect into consideration. It is commonly accepted that there exist quite some similarity in the $E0+$ multipole for all PWA, but notable differences in this, but also in remaining partial waves still remain. In this paper we demonstrate that once …
We study the inclusive J/psi production at large transverse momenta at lepton-hadron colliders in the limit when the exchange photon is quasi real, also referred to as photoproduction. Our computation includes the leading-P_T leading-v next-to-leading alpha_s corrections. In particular, we consider the contribution from J/psi plus another charm quark, by employing for the first time in quarkonium photoproduction the variable-flavour-number scheme. We also include a QED-induced contribution via an off-shell photon which remained ignored in the literature and which we show to be the leading cont…
In this work we study the diffractive photoproduction of $J/Ψ$ in proton-proton, proton - nucleus and nucleus - nucleus collisions at LHC energies using the color dipole formalism and different models for the forward dipole - target scattering amplitude. Our goal is to estimate the theoretical uncertainty present in the current predictions in the literature. Our results are compared with the experimental data and predictions for higher energies are presented.
Photoproduction of heavy quarks in ultraperipheral collisions can help elucidate important features of the physics of heavy quarks in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Due to the dependence on parton distributions it can also potentially offer some constraining ability in the determination of nuclear parton distributions. In the present study we consider next-to-leading order (NLO) photoproduction of heavy quarks in ultraperipheral proton-proton (pp), proton-nucleus (pA), and nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Total cross sections and rapidity distributions ar…
The search for undiscovered excited states of the nucleon continues to be a focus of experiments at Jefferson Lab.Recent LQCD calculations have confirmed long-standing quark-model predictions of many more states than have so far been identified.A large effort for the N-star program has been launched using the CLAS detector to provide the database that will allow nearly model-independent partial wave analyses to be carried out in the search for such states. Polarization observables play a crucial role in this effort, as they are essential in disentangling overlapping resonant and non-resonant a…
In this paper we investigate the photoproduction of QED bound states in proton -- proton, proton -- nucleus and nucleus -- nucleus collisions at RHIC, LHC and FCC energies considering an accurate treatment of the absorptive corrections and for the nuclear form factor. The total cross sections for the production of singlet and triplet $(l^+ l^-)$ states, with $l = e,\, μ, \, τ$, are estimated and a detailed analysis of the photoproduction of singlet QED bound states is performed considering the rapidity ranges covered by central and forward detectors. The impact of the Coulomb corrections on th…
We study the $Υ(1S)$ meson photoproduction on protons and nuclei at the near-threshold center-of-mass energies below 11.4 GeV (or at the corresponding photon laboratory energies $E_γ$ below 68.8 GeV). We calculate the absolute excitation functions for the non-resonant and resonant photoproduction of $Υ(1S)$ mesons off protons at incident photon laboratory energies of 63--68 GeV by accounting for direct ($γp \to {Υ(1S)}p$) and two-step ($γp \to P^+_b(11080,11125,11130) \to {Υ(1S)}p$) $Υ(1S)$ production channels within different scenarios for the non-resonant total cross section of elementary re…
We revisit inclusive J/psi and Upsilon photoproduction at lepton-hadron colliders, namely in the limit when the exchanged photon is quasi real. Our computation includes the next-to-leading-order (NLO) alpha_s corrections to the leading-order contributions in v. Similarly to the case of NLO charmonium-hadroproduction processes, the resulting cross sections obtained in the MS-bar factorisation scheme are sometimes found to be negative. We show that the scale-fixing criteria which we derived in a previous study of eta(c) production successfully solves this problem from the EicC all the way up to …
Beam-helicity asymmetries and mass-differential cross sections have been measured at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz for the photoproduction of neutral and mixed-charge pion pairs in the reactions $\boldsymbolγp\rightarrow nπ^0π^+$ and $\boldsymbolγp\rightarrow pπ^0π^0$ off free protons and $\boldsymbolγd \rightarrow (p)pπ^0π^-$, $\boldsymbolγd\rightarrow (n)pπ^0π^0$ and $\boldsymbolγd\rightarrow (n)nπ^0π^+$, $\boldsymbolγd\rightarrow (p)n π^0π^0$ off quasi-free nucleons bound in the deuteron for incident photon energies up to 1.4 GeV. Circularly polarized photons were produced in bremsstrahlung…
