The purpose of this study is to propose a high-accuracy and fast numerical method for the Cauchy problem of the Laplace equation. Our problem is directly discretized by the method of fundamental solutions (MFS). The Tikhonov regularization method stabilizes a numerical solution of the problem for given Cauchy data with high noises. The accuracy of the numerical solution depends on a regularization parameter of the Tikhonov regularization technique and some parameters of MFS. The L-curve determines a suitable regularization parameter for obtaining an accurate solution. Numerical experiments show that such a suitable regularization parameter coincides with the optimal one. Moreover, a better choice of the parameters of MFS is numerically observed. It is noteworthy that a problem whose solution has singular points can successfully be solved. It is concluded that the numerical method proposed in this paper is effective for a problem with an irregular domain, singular points, and the Cauchy data with high noises.
We are interested in the classical ill-posed Cauchy problem for the Laplace equation. One method to approximate the solution associated with compatible data consists in considering a family of regularized well-posed problems depending on a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$. In this context, in order to prove convergence of finite elements methods, it is necessary to get regularity results of the solutions to these regularized problems which hold uniformly in $\varepsilon$. In the present work, we obtain these results in smooth domains and in 2D polygonal geometries. In presence of corners, due t…
We investigate the Cauchy problem for linear elliptic operators with $C^\infty$-coefficients at a regular set $Ω\subset R^2$, which is a classical example of an ill-posed problem. The Cauchy data are given at the manifold $Γ\subset \partialΩ$ and our goal is to reconstruct the trace of the $H^1(Ω)$ solution of an elliptic equation at $\partial Ω/ Γ$. The method proposed here composes the segmenting Mann iteration with a fixed point equation associated with the elliptic Cauchy problem. Our algorithm generalizes the iterative method developed by Maz'ya et al., who proposed a method based on solv…
This paper presents a regularization technique for the high order efficient numerical evaluation of nearly singular, principal-value, and finite-part Cauchy-type integral operators. By relying on the Cauchy formula, the Cauchy-Goursat theorem, and on-curve Taylor interpolations of the input density, the proposed methodology allows to recast the Cauchy and associated integral operators as smooth contour integrals. As such, they can be accurately evaluated everywhere in the complex plane -- including at problematic points near and on the contour -- by means of elementary quadrature rules. Applic…
In this paper, we are interested to an inverse Cauchy problem governed by the Stokes equation, called the data completion problem. It consists in determining the unspecified fluid velocity, or one of its components over a part of its boundary, by introducing given measurements on its remaining part. As it's known, this problem is one of the highly ill-posed problems in the Hadamard's sense \cite{had}, it is then an interesting challenge to carry out a numerical procedure for approximating their solutions, mostly in the particular case of noisy data. To solve this problem, we propose here a reg…
Two methods of level set type are proposed for solving the Cauchy problem for an elliptic equation. Convergence and stability results for both methods are proven, characterizing the iterative methods as regularization methods for this ill-posed problem. Some numerical experiments are presented, showing the efficiency of our approaches and verifying the convergence results.

We investigate the Cauchy problem for elliptic operators with $C^\infty$-coefficients at a regular set $Ω\subset R^2$, which is a classical example of an ill-posed problem. The Cauchy data are given at the subset $Γ\subset \partialΩ$ and our objective is to reconstruct the trace of the $H^1(Ω)$ solution of an elliptic equation at $\partial Ω/ Γ$. The method described here is a generalization of the algorithm developed by Maz'ya et al. [Ma] for the Laplace operator, who proposed a method based on solving successive well-posed mixed boundary value problems (BVP) using the given Cauchy data as pa…
We propose a new finite difference scheme for the degenerate parabolic equation \[ \partial_t u - \mbox{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u) =f, \quad p\geq 2. \] Under the assumption that the data is Hölder continuous, we establish the convergence of the explicit-in-time scheme for the Cauchy problem provided a suitable stability type CFL-condition. An important advantage of our approach, is that the CFL-condition makes use of the regularity provided by the scheme to reduce the computational cost. In particular, for Lipschitz data, the CFL-condition is of the same order as for the heat equation and…
We consider the Cauchy problem for a first-order evolution equation with memory in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space when the integral term is related to the time derivative of the solution. The main problems of the approximate solution of such nonlocal problems are due to the necessity to work with the approximate solution for all previous time moments. We propose a transformation of the first-order integrodifferential equation to a system of local evolutionary equations. We use the approach known in the theory of Voltaire integral equations with an approximation of the difference kernel by …
In this paper we investigate the non-linear and ill-posed inverse problem of simultaneously identifying the conductivity and the reaction in diffuse optical tomography with noisy measurement data available on an accessible part of the boundary. We propose an energy functional method and the total variational regularization combining with the quadratic stabilizing term to formulate the identification problem to a PDEs constrained optimization problem. We show the stability of the proposed regularization method and the convergence of the finite element regularized solutions to the identification…

In the recent developments of regularization theory for inverse and ill-posed problems, a variational quasi-reversibility (QR) method has been designed to solve a class of time-reversed quasi-linear parabolic problems. Known as a PDE-based approach, this method relies on adding a suitable perturbing operator to the original problem and consequently, on gaining the corresponding fine stabilized operator, which leads us to a forward-like problem. In this work, we establish new conditional estimates for such operators to solve a prototypical Cauchy problem for elliptic equations. This problem is …

Let $(-Δ)_c^s$ be the realization of the fractional Laplace operator on the space of continuous functions $C_0(\mathbb{R})$, and let $(-Δ_h)^s$ denote the discrete fractional Laplacian on $C_0(\mathbb{Z}_h)$, where $0<s<1$ and $\mathbb{Z}_h:=\{hj:\; j\in\mathbb{Z}\}$ is a mesh of fixed size $h>0$. We show that solutions of fractional order semi-linear Cauchy problems associated with the discrete operator $(-Δ_h)^s$ on $C_0(\mathbb{Z}_h)$ converge to solutions of the corresponding Cauchy problems associated with the continuous operator $(-Δ)_c^s$. In addition, we obtain that the convergence is …
This work is devoted to the nonlinear inverse problem of identifying the reaction coefficient in an elliptic boundary value problem from single Cauchy data on a part of the boundary. We then examine simultaneously two elliptic boundary value problems generated from the available Cauchy data. The output least squares method with the Tikhonov regularization is applied to find approximations of the sought coefficient. We discretize the PDEs with piecewise linear finite elements. The stability and convergence of this technique are then established. A numerical experiment is presented to illustrate…
