Considering a massive or massless free spinor field propagating in a flat five dimensional space with its fifth dimension compactified either on a strip or on a circle, we analyse the procedure of generation of the four dimensional Kaluza-Klein spinor mass towers. Requiring the five dimensional Dirac operator to be symmetric, the set of all the allowed boundary conditions is obtained. In the determination of the boundary conditions and in the Kaluza-Klein reduction equations, the SO(3,1) and parity invariances in the space-time subspace are carefully taken into account. The equations determining the mass towers are written in full generality. A few numerical examples are given.
The ultra-violet behavior of Kaluza-Klein theories on a one dimensional orbifold is discussed. An extension of dimensional regularization that can be applied to a compact dimension is presented. Using this, the FI-tadpole is calculated in the effective KK theory resulting from compactifying supersymmetric theories in 5 dimensions.
All the boundary conditions compatible with the reduction of a five dimensional spinor field of bulk mass $M$ in a compactified warped space to a four dimensional brane are derived from the hermiticity conditions of the relevant operator. The possible presence of metric singularities is taken into account. Examples of resulting Kaluza-Klein spinor towers are given for a representative set of values for the basic parameters of the model and of the parameters describing the allowed boundary conditions, within the hypothesis that there exists one-mass-scale-only, the Planck mass. In many cases, t…
We compactify the abelian 6d (1,0) tensor multiplet on a circle bundle, thus reducing the theory down to 5d SYM while keeping all the KK modes. This abelian classical field theory, when interpreted suitably, has a nonlocal superconformal symmetry. Furthermore, a nonabelian generalization, where all the KK modes are kept, is possible for the nonlocal superconformal symmetry, whereas for the local superconformal symmetry we can only realize a subgroup.
Inspired by the warped Randall Sundrum scenario proposed to solve the mass scale hierarchy problem with a compactified fifth extra dimension, a similar model with no metric singularities has been elaborated. In this framework, the Kaluza-Klein reduction equations for a real massless scalar field propagating in the bulk have been studied carefully from the point of view of hermiticity so as to formulate in a mathematically rigorous way all the possible boundary conditions and corresponding mass eigenvalue towers and tachyon states. The physical masses as observable in our four-dimensional brane…
Considering that the momentum squared in the extra dimensions is the physically relevant quantity for the generation of the Kaluza-Klein mass states, we have reanalyzed mathematically the procedure for five dimensional scalar fields within the Arkhani-Ahmed, Dimopoulos and Dvali scenario. We find new sets of physically allowed boundary conditions. Beside the usual results, they lead to new towers with non regular mass spacing, to lonely mass states and to tachyons. We remark that, since the SO(1,4) symmetry is to be broken due to the compactification of the extra dimensions, the speed of light…

The paper consists mainly of two parts. In the first part, we obtain well-defined Killing spinor equations for the low-energy effective action of the bosonic string with the conformal anomaly term. We show that the conformal anomaly term is the only scalar potential that one can add into the action that is consistent with the Killing spinor equations. In the second part, we demonstrate that the Kaluza-Klein theory can be gauged so that the Killing spinors are charged under the Kaluza-Klein vector. This gauging process generates a scalar potential with a maximum that gives rise to an AdS spacet…
The genuine Kaluza-Klein-like theories (with no fields in addition to gravity) have difficulties with the existence of massless spinors after the ompactification of some of dimensions of space\cite{witten}. We assume a $M^{(1+3)} \times$ a flat finite disk in $(1+5)$-dimensional space, with the boundary allowing spinors of only one handedness. Massless spinors then chirally couple to the corresponding background gauge gravitational field, which solves equations of motion for a free field, linear in the Riemann curvature.
We consider a free real vector field propagating in a five dimensional flat space with its fifth dimension compactified either on a strip or on a circle and perform a Kalaza Klein reduction which breaks SO(4,1) invariance while reserving SO(3,1) invariance. Taking into account the Lorenz gauge condition, we obtain from the most general hermiticity conditions for the relevant operators all the allowed boundary conditions which have to be imposed on the fields in the extra-dimension. The physical Kaluza-Klein mass towers, which result in a four-dimensional brane, are determined in the different …
The version of the warp model that we proposed to explain the mass scale hierarchy has been extended by the introduction of one or more singularities in the metric. We restricted ourselves to a real massless scalar field supposed to propagate in a five dimensional bulk with the extradimension being compactified on a strip or on a circle. With the same emphasis on the hermiticity and commutativity properties of the Kakuza Klein operators, we have established all the allowed boundary conditions to be imposed on the fields. From them, for given positions of the singularities, one can deduce eithe…
The genuine Kaluza-Klein-like theories (with no fields in addition to gravity with torsion) have difficulties with the existence of massless spinors after the compactification of some of dimensions of space\cite{witten}. We demonstrate in this letter on an example of a flat torus - as a compactified part of an (1+5)-dimensional space - that for constant fields and appropriate boundary conditions there exists in the 1+3 dimensional space a massless solution, which is mass protected and chirally coupled with a Kaluza-Klein charge to the corresponding gauge field.
Recently the spectrum of KK modes in the framework of one flat extra-dimensional scenario was revisited in the paper Phys. Rev. D74 (2006) 124013, (hep-th/0607246) on the basis of self-adjoint extension of the quantum mechanical operator determining the KK masses. In this Letter we note that the range of allowed boundary conditions on the KK modes is overestimated in above mentioned paper and give all allowed possibilities.
Two-step dissipation is studied in supersymmetric models in which the field in motion couples to bulk fields in the higher dimensional space. Since the Kaluza-Klein tower of the intermediate field changes its mass-spectrum during the evolution, there could be back-reaction from the tower. Then the system may eventually cause significant dissipation of the kinetic energy if the tower is coupled to light fields in the thermal bath. To see what happens in the higher dimensional theory, we consider three models for the scenario, which are carefully prepared. In these models the extension is obviou…
We propose a method for using ultracold atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, to form an analog model of a scalar field in five dimensional space-time, where one of the spatial dimensions is compact. In the analog system the extra dimension is discrete, and realized using the internal degrees of freedom of the system. In the low energy regime, the Kaluza-Klein tower of masses is recovered, and the effective radius of the compact dimension is identified.
One step towards realistic Kaluza-Klein[like] theories and a loop hole through the Witten's "no-go theorem" is presented for cases which we call an effective two dimensionality cases: In $d=2$ the equations of motion following from the action with the linear curvature leave spin connections and zweibeins undetermined. We present the case of a spinor in $d=(1+5)$ compactified on a formally infinite disc with the zweibein which makes a disc curved on an almost $S^2$ and with the spin connection field which allows on such a sphere only one massless normalizable spinor state of a particular charge…
With the aim to study six-dimensional (2,0) superconformal theories with non-Abelian tensor multiplets we propose a five-dimensional superconformal action with eight supersymmetries for an infinite tower of non-Abelian vector, tensor and hypermultiplets. It describes the dynamics of the complete spectrum of the (2,0) theories compactified on a circle coupled to an additional vector multiplet containing the circle radius and the Kaluza-Klein vector arising from the six-dimensional metric. All couplings are only given in terms of group theoretical constants and the Kaluza-Klein levels. After sup…
Kaluza-Klein theory in which the geometry of an additional dimension is fractal has been considered. In such a theory the mass of an elementary electric charge appears to be many orders of magnitude smaller than the Planck mass, and the "tower" of masses which correspond to higher integer charges becomes aperiodic.
We discuss the possibility to obtain, from a five-dimensional free spinor Lagrangian, the Quantum Electro-Dynamics (QED) coupling via a Kaluza-Klein reduction of the theory. This result is achieved taking a phase dependence of the spinor field on the extra-coordinate and modifying the corresponding connection. The five-dimensional spinor theory is covariant under the admissible coordinates transformations and its four-dimensional reduction provides the QED coupling term.
We consider four-dimensional quadratic gravity coupled to infinite towers of free massive scalar fields, Weyl fermions and vector bosons. We find that for specific numbers of towers, finite cosmological and Newton constants are induced in the 1-loop effective action. This is derived both in Adler's approach and by using the heat kernel method, which yield identical results. If the infinite number of massive states may be regarded as Kaluza--Klein modes arising from fields in higher dimensions, there are no Kaluza--Klein states associated with the four-dimensional graviton. Hence gravity is int…
We study the classical and quantum cosmology of a 4+1-dimensional space-time with a non-zero cosmological constant coupled to a self interacting massive spinor field. We consider a spatially flat Robertson-Walker universe with the usual scale factor $R(t)$ and an internal scale factor $a(t)$ associated with the extra dimension. For a free spinor field the resulting equations admit exact solutions, whereas for a self interacting spinor field one should resort to a numerical method for exhibiting their behavior. These solutions give rise to a degenerate metric and exhibit signature transition fr…
We present a geometrical unification theory in a Kaluza-Klein approach that achieve the geometrization of a generic gauge theory bosonic component. We show how it is possible to derive the gauge charge conservation from the invariance of the model under extra-dimensional translations and to geometrize gauge connections for spinors, thus we can introduce the matter just by free spinorial fields. Then, we present the applications to i)a pentadimensional manifold $V^{4}\otimes S^{1}$, so reproducing the original Kaluza-Klein theory, unless some extensions related to the rule of the scalar field c…
Possible experimental manifestations of the contribution of heavy Kaluza-Klein particles, within a simple scalar model in six dimensions with spherical compactification, are studied. The approach is based on the assumption that the inverse radius $L^{-1}$ of the space of extra dimensions is of the order of the scale of the supersymmetry breaking $M_{SUSY} \sim 1 ÷10$ TeV. The total cross section of the scattering of two light particles is calculated to one loop order and the effect of the Kaluza-Klein tower is shown to be noticeable for energies $\sqrt{s} \geq 1.4 L^{-1}$.
We perform a Kaluza-Klein inspired rewriting of double field theory by splitting the coordinates into `compact' and `non-compact' directions. There is no truncation of the compact coordinates or their duals, and so this formulation is manifestly O(d,d) invariant, with d the number of compact directions. The action can serve as starting point for arbitrary Kaluza-Klein ansaetze. For a torus background the theory describes the full tower of Kaluza-Klein modes or, in the dual frame, of the winding modes. The Kaluza-Klein vector is a gauge field for the duality-covariantized Courant bracket algebr…
We consider a broad class of massive four dimensional effective theories describing an infinite tower of charged massive spin 1 states, interacting with massless spin 1 and spin 0. The spectrum is chosen to be the same as that appears in the Kaluza-Klein theory reduction of 5d Yang-Mills to ensure the absence of any spurious poles in a possible double copy formulation. The effective theories are characterized by multiple different couplings between different fields which are unconstrained by symmetries and low energy criteria. Remarkably, by demanding that the scattering amplitudes preserve co…
A unified theory of the non-Abelian gauge interactions with gravity in the framework of a discretized Kaluaza-Kleine theory is constructed with a modified Dirac operator and wedge product. All the couplings of chiral spinors to the non-Abelian gauge fields emerge naturally as components of the couplings of the chiral spinors to the generalized gravity together with some new interactions. In particular, the currently prevalent gravity-QCD-quark and gravity-electroweak-quark-lepton models are shown to follow as special cases of the general framework.
We study the supersymmetry breaking induced by probe anti-D3-branes at the tip of the Klebanov-Strassler throat geometry. Antibranes inside this geometry polarize and can be described by an NS5-brane wrapping an $S^2$. When the number of antibranes is small compared to the background flux a metastable state exists that breaks supersymmetry. We present a manifestly supersymmetric effective model that realizes the polarized metastable state as a solution, spontaneously breaking the supersymmetry. The supersymmetric model relies crucially on the inclusion of Kaluza-Klein (matrix) degrees of freed…
We derive the invariant operators of the zero-form, the one-form, the two-form and the spinor from which the mass spectrum of Kaluza Klein of eleven-dimensional supergravity on AdS_4 x N^{010} can be derived by means of harmonic analysis. We calculate their eigenvalues for all representations of SU(3)xSO(3). We show that the information contained in these operators is sufficient to reconstruct the complete N=3 supersymmetry content of the compactified theory. We find the N=3 massless graviton multiplet, the Betti multiplet and the SU(3) Killing vector multiplet.
Strong (sublattice or tower) formulations of the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) imply that, if a weakly coupled gauge theory exists, a tower of charged particles drives the theory to strong coupling at an ultraviolet scale well below the Planck scale. This tower can consist of low-spin states, as in Kaluza-Klein theory, or high-spin states, as with weakly-coupled strings. We provide a suggestive bottom-up argument based on the mild $p$-form WGC that, for any gauge theory coupled to a fundamental axion through a $θF \wedge F$ term, the tower is a stringy one. The charge-carrying string states at…
We show how in the presence of RR two-form field strength the conditions for preserving supersymmetry on six- and seven-dimensional manifolds lead to certain generalizations of monopole equations. For six dimensions the string frame metric is Kaehler with the complex structure that descends from the octonions if in addition we assume F^{(1,1)}=0. The susy generator is a gauge covariantly constant spinor. For seven dimensions the string frame metric is conformal to a G_2 metric if in addition we assume the field strength to obey a selfduality constraint. Solutions to these equations lift to geo…
We describe the dimensional reduction of massive and partially massless spin-2 fields on general Einstein direct product manifolds. As with massless fields, the higher-dimensional gauge symmetry of the partially massless field displays itself upon dimensional reduction as a tower of Stückelberg symmetries for the massive modes of the tower. Unlike the massless case, the zero mode of the gauge symmetry does not display itself as a lower-dimensional non-Stuckelberg gauge symmetry enforcing partial masslessness on the zero mode. Partial masslessness is destroyed by the dimensional reduction and t…
We construct a Chern-Simons type gauged N=8 supergravity in three spacetime dimensions with gauge group SO(4) x T_\infty over the infinite dimensional coset space SO(8,\infty)/(SO(8) x SO(\infty)), where T_\infty is an infinite dimensional translation subgroup of SO(8,\infty). This theory describes the effective interactions of the (infinitely many) supermultiplets contained in the two spin-1 Kaluza-Klein towers arising in the compactification of N=(2,0) supergravity in six dimensions on AdS_3 x S^3 with the massless supergravity multiplet. After the elimination of the gauge fields associated …
We study the spin 1/2 and spin 3/2 fermion fields in a thick braneworld scenario in six dimensions called string-cigar model. This smooth string-like model has a source that satisfies the dominant energy condition and undergoes a Ricci flow. We propose a new coupling for the fermions with a background gauge field which allows a smooth and normalized massless mode in the brane with positive tension. By numerical methods the mass spectrum and the massive eigenfunctions are obtained. The Kaluza-Klein massive tower exhibits the usual increasing pattern and, in this scenario, the coupling term does…
In this thesis we investigate the effective actions for massive Kaluza-Klein states, focusing on the massive modes of spin-3/2 and spin-2 fields. To this end we determine the spontaneously broken gauge symmetries associated to these `higher spin' states and construct the unbroken phase of the Kaluza-Klein theory. We show that for the particular background AdS_3 x S*3 x S*3 a consistent coupling of the first massive spin-3/2 multiplet requires an enhancement of local supersymmetry, which in turn will be spontaneously broken in the Kaluza-Klein vacuum. The corresponding action is constructed as …
We show that the physical degrees of freedom of the critical open string with N=2 superconformal symmetry on the worldsheet are described by a self-dual Yang-Mills field on a hyperspace parametrised by the coordinates of the target space R^{2,2} together with a commuting chiral spinor. A prepotential for the self-dual connection in the hyperspace generates the infinite tower of physical fields corresponding to the inequivalent pictures or spinor ghost vacua of this string. An action is presented for this tower, which describes consistent interactions amongst fields of arbitrarily high spin. An…
The genuine Kaluza-Klein-like theories--with no fields in addition to gravity--have difficulties with the existence of massless spinors after the compactification of some space dimensions \cite{witten}. We proposed in previous paper a boundary condition for spinors in d=(1+5) compactified on a flat disk that ensures masslessness of spinors (with all positive half integer charges) in d=(1+3) as well as their chiral coupling to the corresponding background gauge gravitational field. In this paper we study the same toy model, proposing a boundary condition allowing a massless spinor of one handed…
We consider a stabilized RS1 model in the energy range below the direct production of KK states. In this range we work out the effective Lagrangian due to exchange of heavy KK tensor graviton and scalar radion states and compute explicitly the corresponding effective coupling constants. As an example, the Drell-Yan lepton pair production at the Tevatron and the LHC is analyzed in two situations, when the first KK resonance is too heavy to be directly detected at the colliders, and when the first KK resonance is visible but other states are still too heavy. It is shown that in both cases the co…
We consider Riemannian 4-manifolds $(X,g_X)$ with a Spin^c-structure and a suitable circle bundle $Y$ over $X$ such that the Spin^c-structure on $X$ lifts to a spin structure on $Y$. With respect to these structures a spinor $ϕ$ on $X$ lifts to an untwisted spinor $ψ$ on $Y$ and a U(1)-gauge field $A$ for the Spin^c-structure can be absorbed into a Kaluza-Klein metric $g_Y^A$ on $Y$. We show that irreducible solutions $(A,ϕ)$ to the Seiberg-Witten equations on $(X,g_X)$ for the given Spin^c-structure are equivalent to irreducible solutions $ψ$ of a Dirac equation with cubic non-linearity on th…
We construct gauge theories in two extra dimensions compactified on the chiral square, which is a simple compactification that leads to chiral fermions in four dimensions. Stationarity of the action on the boundary specifies the boundary conditions for gauge fields. Any six-dimensional gauge field decomposed in Kaluza-Klein modes includes a tower of heavy spin-1 particles whose longitudinal polarizations are linear combinations of the extra-dimensional components, and a tower of heavy spin-0 particles corresponding to the orthogonal combinations. These linear combinations depend on the Kaluza-…
We show that the ghost-free models of massive gravity and their multi-graviton extensions follow from considering higher dimensional General Relativity in Einstein-Cartan form on a discrete extra dimension, according to the Dimensional Deconstruction paradigm. We show that Dimensional Deconstruction is equivalent to a truncation of the Kaluza-Klein tower at the nonlinear level. Higher dimensional gravity is not recovered from a lower dimensional multi-graviton theory in the limit of a continuous extra dimension (infinite Kaluza-Klein tower) due to the appearance of a low strong coupling scale …
We exhibit a nonrelativistic ideal gas with a Kaluza-Klein tower of species, featuring a singular behavior of thermodynamic functions at zero chemical potential. In this way, we provide a qualitative match to the thermodynamics of recently found black holes in backgrounds with asymptotic nonrelativistic conformal symmetry.
Non-topological solitons (Q-balls) are discussed in some stringy settings. Our main result is that the dielectric D-brane system of Myers admits non-abelian Q-ball solutions on their world-volume, in which $N$ D$p$-branes relax to the standard dielectric form outside the Q-ball, but assume a more diffuse configuration at its centre. We also consider how Q-balls behave in the bulk of extra-dimensional theories, or on wrapped branes. We demonstrate that they carry Kaluza-Klein charge and possess a corresponding Kaluza-Klein tower of states just as normal particles, and we discuss surface energy …
Cosmic super-strings interact generically with a tower of light and/or strongly coupled Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes associated with the geometry of the internal space. We study the production of KK particles by cosmic super-string loops, and show that it is constrained by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We study the resulting constraints in the parameter space of the underlying string theory model and highlight their complementarity with the regions that can be probed by current and upcoming gravitational wave experiments.
The most direct experimental signature of a compactified extra dimension is the appearance of towers of Kaluza-Klein particles obeying specific mass and coupling relations. However, such masses and couplings are subject to radiative corrections. In this paper, using techniques developed in previous work, we investigate the extent to which such radiative corrections deform the expected tree-level relations between Kaluza-Klein masses and couplings. As toy models for our analysis, we investigate a flat five-dimensional scalar λϕ^4 model and a flat five-dimensional Yukawa model involving both sca…
We propose the Kaluza-Klein inspired Brans-Dicke gravity model containing possible existence of dark matter and dark energy. The massive scalar field coupled with gravity in 5 dimensional spacetime can be reduced to 4 dimensional gravity along with the dilaton $ϕ$, gauge fields $A_μ$, and the tower of scalar fields $η_n$. Two additional gauge fields are introduced to form "Cosmic Triad" vector field scenario. We then use the dynamical system approach to analyze the critical points and their corresponding physical parameters. We found that in the case where only the zero mode of the Kaluza-Klei…
Recent work on holographic superconductivity and gravitational duals of systems with non-relativistic conformal symmetry have made use of consistent truncations of D=10 and D=11 supergravity retaining some massive modes in the Kaluza-Klein tower. In this paper we focus on reductions of IIB supergravity to five dimensions on a Sasaki-Einstein manifold, and extend these previous truncations to encompass the entire bosonic sector of gauged D=5, N=2 supergravity coupled to massive multiplets up to the second Kaluza-Klein level. We conjecture that a necessary condition for the consistency of massiv…
It is expected that infinite distance limits in the moduli space of quantum gravity are accompanied by a tower of light states. In view of the emergent string conjecture, this tower must either induce a decompactification or correspond to the emergence of a tensionless critical string. We study the consistency conditions implied by this conjecture on the asymptotic behavior of quantum gravity under dimensional reduction. If the emergent string descends from a (2+1)-dimensional membrane in a higher-dimensional theory, we find that such a membrane must parametrically decouple from the Kaluza-Kle…
We study fluctuations about axisymmetric warped brane solutions in 6D minimal gauged supergravity. Much of our analysis is general and could be applied to other scenarios. We focus on bulk sectors that could give rise to Standard Model gauge fields and charged matter. We reduce the dynamics to Schroedinger type equations plus physical boundary conditions, and obtain exact solutions for the Kaluza-Klein wave functions and discrete mass spectra. The power-law warping, as opposed to exponential in 5D, means that zero mode wave functions can be peaked on negative tension branes, but only at the pr…
We investigate the Kaluza-Klein reductions to ten dimensions of the purely gravitational half-BPS M-theory backgrounds: the M-wave and the Kaluza-Klein monopole. We determine the moduli space of smooth (supersymmetric) Kaluza-Klein reductions by classifying the freely-acting spacelike Killing vectors which preserve some Killing spinor. As a consequence we find a wealth of new supersymmetric IIA configurations involving composite and/or bound-state configurations of waves, D0 and D6-branes, Kaluza-Klein monopoles in type IIA and flux/nullbranes, and some other new configurations. Some new featu…
Scattering amplitudes involving massive spin-2 particles typically grow rapidly with energy. In this paper we demonstrate that the anomalous high-energy growth of the scattering amplitudes cancel for the massive spin-2 Kaluza-Klein modes arising from compactified five-dimensional gravity in a stabilized warped geometry. Generalizing previous work, we show that the two sum rules which enforce the cancellations between the contributions to the scattering amplitudes coming from the exchange of the (massive) radion and those from the exchange of the tower of Goldberger-Wise scalar states (admixtur…
A compactification of 11-dimensional supergravity with two (or more) walls is considered. The whole tower of massive Kaluza-Klein modes along the fifth dimension is taken into account. With the sources on the walls, an explicit composition in terms of Kaluza-Klein modes of massless gravitino (in the supersymmetry preserving case) and massive gravitino (in the supersymmetry breaking case) is obtained. The super-Higgs effect is discussed in detail.
The genuine Kaluza-Klein-like theories--with no fields in addition to gravity--have difficulties with the existence of massless spinors after the compactification of some space dimensions \cite{witten}. We proposed (Phys. Lett. B 633 (2006)771) such a boundary condition for spinors in 1+5 compactified on a flat disk that ensures masslessness of spinors in d=1+3 as well as their chiral coupling to the corresponding background gauge field (which solves equations of motion for a free field linear in the Riemann curvature). In this paper we study the same toy model: M^{(1+3)} x M^{(2)}, looking th…
