In this paper, we explore the benefits, in the sense of total (sum rate) degrees of freedom (DOF), of cooperation and cognitive message sharing for a two-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channel with $M_1$, $M_2$ antennas at transmitters and $N_1$, $N_2$ antennas at receivers. For the case of cooperation (including cooperation at transmitters only, at receivers only, and at transmitters as well as receivers), the DOF is $\min \{M_1+M_2, N_1+N_2, \max(M_1, N_2)), \max(M_2, N_1)\}$, which is the same as the DOF of the channel without cooperation. For the case of cognitive message sharing, the DOF is $\min \{M_1+M_2, N_1+N_2, (1-1_{T2})((1-1_{R2}) \max(M_1, N_2) + 1_{R2} (M_1+N_2)), (1-1_{T1})((1-1_{R1}) \max(M_2, N_1) + 1_{R1} (M_2+N_1)) \}$ where $1_{Ti} = 1$ $(0)$ when transmitter $i$ is (is not) a cognitive transmitter and $1_{Ri}$ is defined in the same fashion. Our results show that while both techniques may increase the sum rate capacity of the MIMO interference channel, only cognitive message sharing can increase the DOF. We also find that it may be more beneficial for a user to have a cognitive transmitter than to have a cognitive receiver.
This paper investigates user cooperation in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with cascaded precoding. The high-dimensional physical channel in massive MIMO systems can be converted into a low-dimensional effective channel through the inner precoder to reduce the overhead of channel estimation and feedback. The inner precoder depends on the spatial covariance matrix of the channels, and thus the same precoder can be used for different users as long as they have the same spatial covariance matrix. Spatial covariance matrix is determined by the surrounding environment of user…
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in green cellular networks for the sake of reducing the energy dissipated by communications and networking devices, including the base stations (BSs) and battery-powered user terminals (UTs). This paper investigates the joint employment of cognition and cooperation techniques invoked for improving the energy efficiency of cellular networks. To be specific, the cellular devices first have to identify the unused spectral bands (known as spectrum holes) using their spectrum sensing functionality. Then, they cooperate for exploiting the detected s…
This paper focuses on two-cell multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian interfering broadcast channels (MIMO-IFBC) with $K$ cooperating users on the cell-boundary of each BS. It corresponds to a downlink scenario for cellular networks with two base stations (BSs), and $K$ users equipped with Wi-Fi interfaces enabling to cooperate among users on a peer-to-peer basis. In this scenario, we propose a novel interference alignment (IA) technique exploiting user cooperation. Our proposed algorithm obtains the achievable degrees of freedom (DoF) of 2K when each BS and user have $M=K+1$ transmit …
This paper deals with spectrum sensing for cognitive radio scenarios where the decision fusion center (DFC) exploits array processing. More specifically, we explore the impact of user cooperation and orthogonal transmissions among secondary users (SUs) on the reporting channel. To this aim four protocols are considered: (i) non-orthogonal and non-cooperative; (ii) orthogonal and non-cooperative; (iii) non-orthogonal and cooperative; (iv) orthogonal and cooperative. The DFC employs maximum ratio combining (MRC) rule and performance are evaluated in terms of complementary receiver operating char…
This paper gives the approximate capacity region of a two-user MIMO interference channel with limited receiver cooperation, where the gap between the inner and outer bounds is in terms of the total number of receive antennas at the two receivers and is independent of the actual channel values. The approximate capacity region is then used to find the degrees of freedom region. For the special case of symmetric interference channels, we also find the amount of receiver cooperation in terms of the backhaul capacity beyond which the degrees of freedom do not improve. Further, the generalized degre…
Massive multiple-inputmultiple-output (MIMO) systems, dense small-cells (SCs), and full duplex are three candidate techniques for next-generation communication systems. The cooperation of next-generation techniques could offer more benefits, e.g., SC in-band wireless backhaul in massive MIMO systems. In this paper, three strategies of SC in-band wireless backhaul in massive MIMO systems are introduced and compared, i.e., complete time-division duplex (CTDD), zero-division duplex (ZDD), and ZDD with interference rejection (ZDD-IR). Simulation results demonstrate that SC in-band wireless backhau…
We consider the downlink of a cellular network with multiple cells and multi-antenna base stations, including a realistic distance-dependent pathloss model, clusters of cooperating cells, and general "fairness" requirements. Beyond Monte Carlo simulation, no efficient computation method to evaluate the ergodic throughput of such systems has been presented so far. We propose an analytic solution based on the combination of large random matrix results and convex optimization. The proposed method is computationally much more efficient than Monte Carlo simulation and provides surprisingly accurate…
We explore the available degrees of freedom for various multiuser MIMO communication scenarios such as the multiple access, broadcast, interference, relay, X and Z channels. For the two user MIMO interference channel, we find a general inner bound and a genie-aided outer bound that give us the exact number of degrees of freedom in many cases. We also study a share-and-transmit scheme for transmitter cooperation. For the share-and-transmit scheme, we show how the gains of transmitter cooperation are entirely offset by the cost of enabling that cooperation so that the available degrees of freedo…
The performance of centralized and distributed massive MIMO deployments are analyzed for indoor office scenarios. The distributed deployments use one of the following precoding methods: (1) local precoding with local channel state information (CSI) to the user equipments (UEs) that it serves; (2) large-scale MIMO with local CSI to all UEs in the network; (3) network MIMO with global CSI. For the distributed deployments (2) and (3), it is shown that using twice as many base station antennas as data streams provides many of the massive MIMO benefits in terms of spectral efficiency and fairness. …
The question of whether the degrees of freedom (DoF) of multi-user networks can be enhanced even under isotropic fading and no channel state information (or output feedback) at the transmitters (CSIT) is investigated. Toward this end, the two-user MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) broadcast and interference channels are studied with no side-information whatsoever at the transmitters and with receivers equipped with full-duplex radios. The full-duplex feature allows for receiver cooperation because each receiver, in addition to receiving the signals sent by the transmitters, can also simul…
Multicell cooperation has recently attracted tremendous attention because of its ability to eliminate intercell interference and increase spectral efficiency. However, the enormous amount of information being exchanged, including channel state information and user data, over backhaul links may deteriorate the network performance in a realistic system. This paper adopts a backhaul cost metric that considers the number of active directional cooperation links, which gives a first order measurement of the backhaul loading required in asymmetric Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) cooperation. We…
This paper takes a new look at Cell-free Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) through the lens of the dynamic cooperation cluster framework from the Network MIMO literature. The purpose is to identify and address scalability issues that appear in prior work. We provide distributed algorithms for initial access, pilot assignment, cluster formation, precoding, and combining that are scalable in the sense of being implementable with arbitrarily many users. Interestingly, the suggested precoding and combining outperform conjugate beamforming and matched filtering, respectively, while also…
Channel state information (CSI) feedback is a challenging issue in frequency division multiplexing (FDD) massive MIMO systems. This paper studies a cooperative feedback scheme, where the users first exchange their CSI with each other by exploiting device-to-device (D2D) communications, then compute the precoder by themselves, and feed back the precoder to the base station (BS). Analytical results are derived to show that the cooperative precoder feedback is more efficient than the CSI feedback in terms of interference mitigation. Under the constraint of limited D2D communication capacity, we d…
To meet the growing spectrum demands, future cellular systems are expected to share the spectrum of other services such as radar. In this paper, we consider a network multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with partial cooperation model where radar stations cooperate with cellular base stations (BS)s to deliver messages to intended mobile users. So the radar stations act as BSs in the cellular system. However, due to the high power transmitted by radar stations for detection of far targets, the cellular receivers could burnout when receiving these high radar powers. Therefore, we propose a new …
We propose a cellular architecture that combines multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) downlink with opportunistic use of unlicensed ISM bands to establish device-to-device (D2D) cooperation. The architecture consists of a physical-layer cooperation scheme based on forming downlink virtual MIMO channels through D2D relaying, and a novel resource allocation strategy for such D2D-enabled networks. We prove the approximate optimality of the physical-layer scheme, and demonstrate that such cooperation boosts the effective SNR of the weakest user in the system, especially in the many-user regime, due to multius…
Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) adds a new dimension to be exploited in Cognitive Radio (CR) by simultaneously serving several users. The spatial domain that is added through MIMO is another system resource that has to be optimized, and shared when possible. In this paper, we present a spatial sharing that is carried out through Zero Forcing beamforming (ZFB). Power consumption in such a scenario is discussed and compared to single user case, to evaluate the feasibility of employing spatial cognition from the power perspective. Closed form expressions are derived for the consumed power a…
We consider the downlink of a cellular network with multiple cells and multi-antenna base stations including arbitrary inter-cell cooperation, realistic distance-dependent pathloss and general "fairness" requirements. Beyond Monte Carlo simulation, no efficient computation method to evaluate the ergodic throughput of such systems has been provided so far. We propose an analytic method based on the combination of the large random matrix theory with Lagrangian optimization. The proposed method is computationally much more efficient than Monte Carlo simulation and provides a very accurate approxi…
This paper considers the uplink of user-centric cell-free massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) systems. We utilize the user-centric dynamic cooperation clustering (DCC) framework and derive the achievable spectral efficiency with two-layer decoding that is divided between the access points and the central processing unit (CPU). This decoding method is also known as large-scale fading decoding (LSFD). The fronthaul signaling load is analyzed and a nearly optimal second-layer decoding scheme at the CPU is proposed to reduce the fronthaul requirements compared to the optimal scheme. We a…
In this paper, we propose a signal-aligned network coding (SNC) scheme for K-user time-varying multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channels with limited receiver cooperation. We assume that the receivers are connected to a central processor via wired cooperation links with individual limited capacities. Our SNC scheme determines the precoding matrices of the transmitters so that the transmitted signals are aligned at each receiver. The aligned signals are then decoded into noiseless integer combinations of messages, also known as network-coded messages, by physical-layer network…
The impact of cognition on the energy efficiency of a downlink cellular system in which multiple relays assist the transmission of the base station is considered. The problem is motivated by the practical importance of relay-assisted solutions in mobile networks, such as LTE-A, in which cooperation among relays holds the promise of greatly improving the energy efficiency of the system. We study the fundamental tradeoff between the power consumption at the base station and the level of cooperation and cognition at the relay nodes. By distributing the same message to multiple relays, the base st…
A cellular multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink system is studied in which each base station (BS) transmits to some of the users, so that each user receives its intended signal from a subset of the BSs. This scenario is referred to as network MIMO with partial cooperation, since only a subset of the BSs are able to coordinate their transmission towards any user. The focus of this paper is on the optimization of linear beamforming strategies at the BSs and at the users for network MIMO with partial cooperation. Individual power constraints at the BSs are enforced, along with constrain…
A virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless system using the receiver-side cooperation with the compress-and-forward (CF) protocol, is an alternative to a point-to-point MIMO system, when a single receiver is not equipped with multiple antennas. It is evident that the practicality of CF cooperation will be greatly enhanced if an efficient source coding technique can be used at the relay. It is even more desirable that CF cooperation should not be unduly sensitive to carrier frequency offsets (CFOs). This paper presents a practical study of these two issues. Firstly, codebook desig…
For a user cooperation system with multiple antennas, we consider a trust degree based cooperation techniques to explore the influence of the trustworthiness between users on the communication systems. For the system with two communication pairs, when one communication pair achieves its quality of service (QoS) requirement, they can help the transmission of the other communication pair according to the trust degree, which quantifies the trustworthiness between users in the cooperation. For given trust degree, we investigate the user cooperation strategies, which include the power allocation an…
Due to limited backhaul/feedback link capacity and channel state information (CSI) feedback delay, obtaining global and instantaneous channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is a main obstacle in practice. In this paper, novel transmission schemes are proposed for a class of interference networks that can achieve new trade-off regions between the sum of degrees of freedom (sum-DoF) and CSI feedback delay with distributed and temperately-delayed CSIT. More specifically, a distributed space-time interference alignment (STIA) scheme is proposed for the two-user multiple-input multiple…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output communications can achieve high-level security by concentrating radio frequency signals towards the legitimate users. However, this system is vulnerable in a Rician fading environment if the eavesdropper positions itself such that its channel is highly "similar" to the channel of a legitimate user. To address this problem, this paper proposes an angle aware user cooperation (AAUC) scheme, which avoids direct transmission to the attacked user and relies on other users for cooperative relaying. The proposed scheme only requires the eavesdropper's angle info…
Cooperation between nodes sharing a wireless channel is becoming increasingly necessary to achieve performance goals in a wireless network. The problem of determining the feasibility and stability of cooperation between rational nodes in a wireless network is of great importance in understanding cooperative behavior. This paper addresses the stability of the grand coalition of transmitters signaling over a multiple access channel using the framework of cooperative game theory. The external interference experienced by each TX is represented accurately by modeling the cooperation game between th…
This paper addresses cooperation in a multicell environment where base stations (BSs) wish to jointly serve multiple users, under a constrained-capacity backhaul. We point out that for finite backhaul capacity a trade-off between sharing user data, which allows for full MIMO cooperation, and not doing so, which reduces the setup to an interference channel but also requires less overhead, emerges. We optimize this trade-off by formulating a rate splitting approach in which non-shared data (private to each transmitter) and shared data are superposed. We derive the corresponding achievable rate r…
This paper addresses the problem of competition vs. cooperation in the downlink, between base stations (BSs), of a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) interference, heterogeneous wireless network (HetNet). This research presents a scenario where a macrocell base station (MBS) and a cochannel femtocell base station (FBS) each simultaneously serving their own user equipment (UE), has to choose to act as individual systems or to cooperate in coordinated multipoint transmission (CoMP). The paper employes both the theories of non-cooperative and cooperative games in a unified procedure to analyze…
Network MIMO is considered to be a key solution for the next generation wireless systems in breaking the interference bottleneck in cellular systems. In the MIMO systems, open-loop transmission scheme is used to support mobile stations (MSs) with high mobilities because the base stations (BSs) do not need to track the fast varying channel fading. In this paper, we consider an open-loop network MIMO system with $K$ BSs serving K private MSs and $M^c$ common MS based on a novel partial cooperation overlaying scheme. Exploiting the heterogeneous path gains between the private MSs and the common M…
This work focuses on a large-scale multi-cell multi-user MIMO system in which $L$ base stations (BSs) of $N$ antennas each communicate with $K$ single-antenna user equipments. We consider the design of the linear precoder that minimizes the total power consumption while ensuring target user rates. Three configurations with different degrees of cooperation among BSs are considered: the coordinated beamforming scheme (only channel state information is shared among BSs), the coordinated multipoint MIMO processing technology or network MIMO (channel state and data cooperation), and a single cell b…
Multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are a prime candidate for use in massive connection density in machine-type communication (MTC) networks. One of the key challenges of MTC networks is to obtain accurate channel state information (CSI) at the access point (AP) so that the spectral efficiency can be improved by enabling enhanced MIMO techniques. However, current communication mechanisms relying upon frequency division duplexing (FDD) might not fully support an enormous number of devices due to the rate-constrained limited feedback and the time-consuming scheduling architec…
Concurrent presence of inter-cell and intra-cell interferences constitutes a major impediment to reliable downlink transmission in multi-cell multiuser networks. Harnessing such interferences largely hinges on two levels of information exchange in the network: one from the users to the base-stations (feedback) and the other one among the base-stations (cooperation). We demonstrate that exchanging a finite number of bits across the network, in the form of feedback and cooperation, is adequate for achieving the optimal capacity scaling. We also show that the average level of information exchange…
In this paper, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is proposed to enhance the physical layer security in the Rician fading channel where the angular direction of the eavesdropper is aligned with a legitimate user. In this scenario, we consider a two-phase communication system under the active attacks and passive eavesdropping. Particularly, in the first phase, the base station avoids direct transmission to the attacked user. While, in the second phase, other users cooperate to forward signals to the attacked user with the help of IRS and energy harvesting technology. Under the active attacks,…
Small-cell densification is a strategy enabling the offloading of users from macro base stations (MBSs), in order to alleviate their load and increase the coverage, especially, for cell-edge users. In parallel, as the network increases in density, the BS cooperation emerges as an efficient design method towards the demands for drastic improvement of the system performance against the detrimental overall interference. In addition, the tiers are enhanced with cell association policies by introducing the concept of the association probability. Above this and motivated by the advantages of coopera…
Transmitter (TX) cooperation at various levels has been shown to increase the sum throughput of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this paper we consider a K-user MIMO system where TXs have only global channel state knowledge. It has been theoretically shown that interference alignment (IA) achieves the K/2 degrees of freedom of this K-user MIMO interference channel. However, results on IA and all proposed transceiver techniques for this channel up to date, assume conventional antenna arrays at the transceivers with multiple radio-frequency (RF) chains, each connected …
We study a number of two-user interference networks with multiple-antenna transmitters/receivers, transmitter side information in the form of linear combinations (over finite-field) of the information messages, and two-hop relaying. We start with a Cognitive Interference Channel (CIC) where one of the transmitters (non-cognitive) has knowledge of a rank-1 linear combination of the two information messages, while the other transmitter (cognitive) has access to a rank-2 linear combination of the same messages. This is referred to as the Network-Coded CIC, since such linear combination may be the…
This paper considers the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) relay channel where multiple antennas are employed by each terminal. Compared to single-input single-output (SISO) relay channels, MIMO relay channels introduce additional degrees of freedom, making the design and analysis of optimal cooperative strategies more complex. In this paper, a partial cooperation strategy that combines transmit-side message splitting and block-Markov encoding is presented. Lower bounds on capacity that improve on a previously proposed non-cooperative lower bound are derived for Gaussian MIMO relay channels.
Interference limits performance in wireless networks, and cooperation among receivers or transmitters can help mitigate interference by forming distributed MIMO systems. Earlier work shows how limited receiver cooperation helps mitigate interference. The scenario with transmitter cooperation, however, is more difficult to tackle. In this paper we study the two-user Gaussian interference channel with conferencing transmitters to make progress towards this direction. We characterize the capacity region to within 6.5 bits/s/Hz, regardless of channel parameters. Based on the constant-to-optimality…
In this paper, we investigate the impact of channel aging on the performance of cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with both spatial correlation and pilot contamination. We derive novel closed-form uplink and downlink spectral efficiency (SE) expressions that take imperfect channel estimation into account. More specifically, we consider large-scale fading decoding and matched-filter receiver cooperation in the uplink. The uplink performance of a small-cell (SC) system is derived for comparison. The CF massive MIMO system achieves higher 95\%-likely uplink SE t…
In this work, we study the problem of the optimal dissemination of channel state information (CSI) among K spatially distributed transmitters (TXs) jointly cooperating to serve K receivers (RXs). One of the particularities of this work lies in the fact that the CSI is distributed in the sense that each TX obtains its own estimate of the global multi-user MIMO channel with no further exchange of information being allowed between the TXs. Although this is well suited to model the cooperation between non-colocated TXs, e.g., in cellular Coordinated Multipoint (CoMP) schemes, this type of setting …
Pilot contamination problem in massive MIMO networks operating in time-division duplex (TDD) mode can limit their expected capacity to a great extent. This paper addresses this problem in cosine modulated multitone (CMT) based massive MIMO networks; taking advantage of their so-called blind equalization property. We extend and apply the blind equalization technique from single antenna case to multi-cellular massive MIMO systems and show that it can remove the channel estimation errors (due to pilot contamination effect) without any need for cooperation between different cells or transmission o…
Multiple-antenna broadcast channels with $M$ transmit antennas and $K$ single-antenna receivers is considered, where the channel of receiver $r$ takes one of the $J_r$ finite values. It is assumed that the channel states of each receiver are randomly selected from $\mathds{R}^{M\times 1}$ (or from $\mathds{C}^{M\times 1}$). It is shown that no matter what $J_r$ is, the degrees of freedom (DoF) of $\frac{MK}{M+K-1}$ is achievable. The achievable scheme relies on the idea of interference alignment at receivers, without exploiting the possibility of cooperation among transmit antennas. It is prov…
We present a cognitive prototype that demonstrates a colocated, frequency-division-multiplexed, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar which implements both temporal and spatial sub-Nyquist sampling. The signal is sampled and recovered via the Xampling framework. Cognition is due to the fact that the transmitter adapts its signal spectrum by emitting only those subbands that the receiver samples and processes. Real-time experiments demonstrate sub-Nyquist MIMO recovery of target scenes with 87.5% spatio-temporal bandwidth reduction and signal-to-noise-ratio of -10 dB.
In this work, we consider the joint precoding across K transmitters (TXs), sharing the knowledge of the user's data symbols to be transmitted towards K single-antenna receivers (RXs). We consider a distributed channel state information (DCSI) configuration where each TX has its own local estimate of the overall multiuser MIMO channel. The focus of this work is on the optimization of the allocation of the CSI feedback subject to a constraint on the total sharing through the backhaul network. Building upon the Wyner model, we derive a new approach to allocate the CSI feedback while making effici…
This paper studies the device activity detection problem in a multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, in which the active devices transmit signature sequences to multiple base stations (BSs) that are connected to a central unit (CU), and the BSs cooperate across multiple cells to detect the active devices based on the sample covariance matrices at the BSs. This paper demonstrates the importance of exploiting the knowledge of channel large-scale fadings in this cooperative detection setting through a phase transition analysis, which characterizes the length of signature…
In this paper, we investigate the impact of channel aging on the performance of cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with pilot contamination. To take into account the channel aging effect due to user mobility, we first compute a channel estimate. We use it to derive novel closed-form expressions for the uplink spectral efficiency (SE) of CF massive MIMO systems with large-scale fading decoding and matched-filter receiver cooperation. The performance of a small-cell system is derived for comparison. It is found that CF massive MIMO systems achieve higher 95\%-li…
We consider the downlink of a multi-cell system with multi-antenna base stations and single-antenna user terminals, arbitrary base station cooperation clusters, distance-dependent propagation pathloss, and general "fairness" requirements. Base stations in the same cooperation cluster employ joint transmission with linear zero-forcing beamforming, subject to sum or per-base station power constraints. Inter-cluster interference is treated as noise at the user terminals. Analytic expressions for the system spectral efficiency are found in the large-system limit where both the numbers of users and…
Interference is a major issue that limits the performance in wireless networks, and cooperation among receivers can help mitigate interference by forming distributed MIMO systems. The rate at which receivers cooperate, however, is limited in most scenarios. How much interference can one bit of receiver cooperation mitigate? In this paper, we study the two-user Gaussian interference channel with conferencing decoders to answer this question in a simple setting. We characterize the fundamental gain from cooperation: at high SNR, when INR is below 50% of SNR in dB scale, one-bit cooperation per d…

The rate at which receivers cooperate, however, is limited in most scenarios. How much interference can one bit of receiver cooperation mitigate? In this paper, we study the two-user Gaussian interference channel with conferencing decoders to answer this question in a simple setting. A massive MIMO system entails a large number (tens or hundreds) of base station antennas serving a much smaller number of terminals. These systems demonstrate large gains in spectral and energy efficiency compared with conventional MIMO technology. As the number of antennas grows, the performance of a massive MIMO system gets limited by the interference caused by pilot contamination. Earlier A. Ashikhmin and T. Marzetta proposed (under the name of Pilot Contamination Precoding) Large Scale Fading Precoding (LSFP) and Decoding (LSFD) based on limited cooperation between base stations. They show…
In this paper, we study the problem of physical layer security in large-scale multiple input multiple output (LS-MIMO) systems. The large number of antenna elements in LS-MIMO system is exploited to enhance transmission security and improve system performance, especially when the eavesdropper is closer to the information source and has more antennas than the legitimate user. However, in practical systems, the problem becomes challenging because the eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) is usually unavailable without cooperation and the legitimate CSI may be imperfect due to channel esti…
We design a dynamic rate scheduling policy of Markov type via the solution (a social optimal Nash equilibrium point) to a utility-maximization problem over a randomly evolving capacity set for a class of generalized processor-sharing queues living in a random environment, whose job arrivals to each queue follow a doubly stochastic renewal process (DSRP). Both the random environment and the random arrival rate of each DSRP are driven by a finite state continuous time Markov chain (FS-CTMC). Whereas the scheduling policy optimizes in a greedy fashion with respect to each queue and environmental …
Adaptive Power Allocation (PA) algorithms with different criteria for a cooperative Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) network equipped with Distributed Space-Time Coding (DSTC) are proposed and evaluated. Joint constrained optimization algorithms to determine the power allocation parameters, the channel parameters and the receive filter are proposed for each transmitted stream in each link. Linear receive filter and maximum-likelihood (ML) detection are considered with Amplify-and-Forward (AF) and Decode-and-Forward (DF) cooperation strategies. In the proposed algorithms, the elements in t…
The degrees-of-freedom (DoF) of the multi-antenna three-way channel (3WC) with an intermittent node is studied. Special attention is given to the impact of adaptation. A nonadaptive transmission scheme based on interference alignment, zero-forcing, and erasure-channel treatment is proposed, and its corresponding DoF region is derived. Then, it is shown that this scheme achieves the sum-DoF of the intermittent channel, in addition to the DoF region of the nonintermittent one. Thus, adaptation is not necessary from those perspectives. To the contrary, it is shown that adaptation is necessary for…
We consider a multi-cell, frequency-selective fading, uplink channel (network MIMO) where K user terminals (UTs) communicate simultaneously with B cooperative base stations (BSs). Although the potential benefit of multi-cell cooperation grows with B, the overhead related to the acquisition of channel state information (CSI) will rapidly dominate the uplink resource. Thus, there exists a non-trivial tradeoff between the performance gains of network MIMO and the related overhead in channel estimation for a finite coherence time. Using a close approximation of the net ergodic achievable rate base…
Wireless access through a large distributed network of low-complexity infrastructure nodes empowered with cooperation and coordination capabilities, is an emerging radio architecture, candidate to deal with the mobile data capacity crunch. In the 3GPP evolutionary path, this is known as the Cloud-RAN paradigm for future radio. In such a complex network, distributed MIMO resources optimization is of paramount importance, in order to achieve capacity scaling. In this paper, we investigate efficient strategies towards optimizing the pairing of access nodes with users as well as linear precoding d…
The ability of physical layer relay caching to increase the degrees of freedom (DoF) of a single cell was recently illustrated. In this paper, we extend this result to the case of multiple cells in which a caching relay is shared among multiple non-cooperative base stations (BSs). In particular, we show that a large DoF gain can be achieved by exploiting the benefits of having a shared relay that cooperates with the BSs. We first propose a cache-assisted relaying protocol that improves the cooperation opportunity between the BSs and the relay. Next, we consider the cache content placement prob…
This paper deals with the calibration of Time Division Duplexing (TDD) reciprocity in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based Cell Free Massive MIMO system where the responses of the (Radio Frequency) RF chains render the end to end channel non-reciprocal, even though the physical wireless channel is reciprocal. We further address the non-availability of the uplink channel estimates at locations other than pilot subcarriers and propose a single-shot solution to estimate the downlink channel at all subcarriers from the uplink channel at selected pilot subcarriers. We propose …
Systems of small distributed satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) transmitting cooperatively to a multiple antenna ground station (GS) are investigated. These satellite swarms have the benefit of much higher spatial separation in the transmit antennas than traditional big satellites with antenna arrays, promising a massive increase in spectral efficiency. However, this would require instantaneous perfect channel state information (CSI) and strong cooperation between satellites. In practice, orbital velocities around 7.5 km/s lead to very short channel coherence times on the order of fractions o…
