Thanks to a local interpetation of the KMS condition, the mapping from (unbounded) wedge regions of Minkowski space-time to (bounded) double-cone regions is extended to the Unruh temperature associated to relevant observers in both regions. A previous result, the diamond's temperature, is shown to be proportional to the inverse of the conformal factor (Weyl rescaling of the metric) of this map. One thus explains from a mathematical point of view why an observer with finite lifetime experiences the vacuum as a thermal state whatever his acceleration, even vanishing.
By globally embedding curved spaces into higher dimensional flat ones, we show that Hawking thermal properties map into their Unruh equivalents: The relevant curved space detectors become Rindler ones, whose temperature and entropy reproduce the originals. Specific illustrations include Schwarzschild, Schwarzschild-(anti)deSitter, Reissner-Nordstrom and BTZ spaces.
We discuss for which smooth global embeddings of a metric into a Minkowskian spacetime the Hawking into Unruh mapping takes place. There is a series of examples of global embeddings into the Minkowskian spacetime (GEMS) with such mapping for physically interesting metrics. These examples use Fronsdal-type embeddings for which timelines are hyperbolas. In the present work we show that for some new embeddings (non Fronsdal-type) of the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom metrics there is no mapping. We give also the examples of hyperbolic and non hyperbolic type embeddings for the de Sitter met…
We consider coordinate systems adapted to accelerated observers, construct a generalised Rindler metric and then adopt a specific form of it to compute the semiclassical Unruh temperature, using a WKB approximation within a Hamilton Jacobi analysis in the tunneling picture. Corrections to this temperature are next computed by going beyond the usual WKB approximation. A connection of the corrected Unruh temperature with the Hawking temperature is established. This connection is also explained through the method of Global Embedding Minkowski Spacetime (GEMS).
We established the equivalence between the local Hawking temperature measured by the time-like Killing observer located at some positions $r$ with finite distances from the outer horizon $r_+$ in the 5-dimensional spinning black hole space with both negative and positive constant curvature, and the Unruh temperature measured by the Rindler observer with constant acceleration in the 6-dimensional flat space by employing the globally embedding approach.
We study the conditions of the existence of Hawking into Unruh mapping for hyperbolic (Fronsdal-type) embeddings of metric into the Minkowski space, for which timelines are hyperbolas. Many examples are known for global embeddings into the Minkowskian spacetime (GEMS) with such mapping for physically interesting metrics with some symmetry. However the examples of embeddings, both smooth and hyperbolic, for which there is no mapping, were also given. In the present work we prove that Hawking into Unruh mapping takes place for a hyperbolic embedding of an arbitrary metric with a time-like Killin…
It is well-known that the $(1+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild and spatially flat FLRW spacetimes are conformally flat. This work examines entanglement harvesting from the conformal field vacuums in these spacetimes between two Unruh-DeWitt detectors, moving along outgoing null trajectories. In $(1+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime, we considered the Boulware and Unruh vacuums for our investigations. In this analysis, one observes that while entanglement harvesting is possible in $(1+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild and $(1+3)$ dimensional de Sitter spacetimes, it is not possible in the $(1+1)…
Through the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study a uniformly accelerated quark in the vacuum of strongly-coupled conformal field theories in various dimensions, and determine the resulting stochastic fluctuations of the quark trajectory. From the perspective of an inertial observer, these are quantum fluctuations induced by the gluonic radiation emitted by the accelerated quark. From the point of view of the quark itself, they originate from the thermal medium predicted by the Unruh effect. We scrutinize the relation between these two descriptions in the gravity side of the correspondence, and sho…
We find the response function and the transition rate for an Unruh-DeWitt detector interacting with a conformal scalar field in global two-dimensional anti--de Sitter (AdS) spacetime with different boundary conditions at its conformal infinities. We calculate the particle energy spectrum as seen by subcritical accelerated detectors and discuss how it depends on the choice of the boundary condition. We show that, despite this nontrivial dependence on the boundary conditions, the limit when the AdS length scale tends to zero is well defined and leads to the well-known results of 1+1 Minkowski sp…
We study the mechanism of global embeddings into the Minkowski spacetime(GEMS) with the Hawking into Unruh mapping. We find a constraint that the extrinsic acceleration of the static observer in the Riemann space must satisfy for such embeddings. Thus the question raised by Paston in Ref.\cite{1}, that is, when does the Hawking into Unruh mapping for global embeddings work, is partly addressed. We also calculate the potential barrier of a scalar field to reach r $\rightarrow\infty$ in the ambient space. The results show that the potential barrier is finite, hence the static observer at r $\rig…
Given a local quantum field theory net A on the de Sitter spacetime dS^d, where geodesic observers are thermalized at Gibbons-Hawking temperature, we look for observers that feel to be in a ground state, i.e. particle evolutions with positive generator, providing a sort of converse to the Hawking-Unruh effect. Such positive energy evolutions always exist as noncommutative flows, but have only a partial geometric meaning, yet they map localized observables into localized observables. We characterize the local conformal nets on dS^d. Only in this case our positive energy evolutions have a comple…
Building on a series of earlier papers [gr-qc/9604007, gr-qc/9604008, gr-qc/9604009], I investigate the various point-wise and averaged energy conditions in the Unruh vacuum. I consider the quantum stress-energy tensor corresponding to a conformally coupled massless scalar field, work in the test-field limit, restrict attention to the Schwarzschild geometry, and invoke a mixture of analytical and numerical techniques. I construct a semi-analytic model for the stress-energy tensor that globally reproduces all known numerical results to within 0.8%, and satisfies all known analytic features of t…
In the paper, the temperature associated with a dynamical spherically symmetric black hole or with a cosmological horizon is investigated from the point of view of a point-like detector. First, we briefly review the Hamilton-Jacobi tunneling method for a generic dynamical spherically symmetric space-time, and present two applications of the tunneling method. Then, we apply a well-known relativistic quantum theoretical technique, namely the Unruh-DeWitt detector formalism for a conformally coupled scalar field in a generic FRW space-time. As an application, for the generic static black hole cas…
We compute the transition rate of an Unruh-DeWitt detector coupled both to a ground state and to a KMS state of a massless, conformally coupled scalar field on a static BTZ black hole with Robin boundary conditions. We observe that, although the anti-Hawking effect is manifest for the ground state, this is not the case for the KMS state. In addition, we show that our analysis applies with minor modifications also to the anti-Unruh effect on Rindler-AdS$_3$ spacetime.
In the lack of a full-fledged theory of quantum gravity, I consider free, scalar, quantum fields on curved spacetimes to gain insight into the interaction between quantum and gravitational phenomena. I employ the Unruh-DeWitt detector approach to probe thermal, quantum effects on static, non-globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In this context, all physical observables depend on the choice of a boundary condition that cannot be singled-out, in general, without resorting to an experiment. Notwithstanding, the framework applied admits a large family of (Robin) boundary conditions and grants us physic…
The quantum stress tensor in the Unruh state for a conformal scalar propagating in a 4D Schwarzschild black hole spacetime is reconstructed in its leading behaviour at infinity and near the horizon by means of an effective action derived by functionally integrating the trace anomaly.
It is shown that a general radial conformal Killing vector in Minkowski space-time can be associated to a generator of time evolution in conformal quantum mechanics. Among these conformal Killing vectors one finds a class which maps causal diamonds in Minkowski space-time into themselves. The flow of such Killing vectors describes worldlines of accelerated observers with a finite lifetime within the causal diamond. Time evolution of static diamond observers is equivalent to time evolution in conformal quantum mechanics governed by a hyperbolic Hamiltonian and covering only a segment of the tim…
Solutions of the field equations of theories of gravity which admit distinct conformal frame representations can look very different in these frames. We show that Brans class IV solutions describe wormholes in the Jordan frame (in a certain parameter range) but correspond to horizonless geometries in the Einstein frame. The reasons for such a change of behaviour under conformal mappings are elucidated in general, using Brans IV solutions as an example.
We study the Unruh effect for an observer with a finite lifetime, using the thermal time hypothesis. The thermal time hypothesis maintains that: (i) time is the physical quantity determined by the flow defined by a state over an observable algebra, and (ii) when this flow is proportional to a geometric flow in spacetime, temperature is the ratio between flow parameter and proper time. An eternal accelerated Unruh observer has access to the local algebra associated to a Rindler wedge. The flow defined by the Minkowski vacuum of a field theory over this algebra is proportional to a flow in space…
The conformal transformation of the Misner-Sharp mass is reexamined. It has recently been found that this mass does not transform like usual masses do under conformal mappings of spacetime. We show that when it comes to conformal transformations, the widely used geometric definition of the Misner-Sharp mass is fundamentally different from the original conception of the latter. Indeed, when working within the full hydrodynamic setup that gave rise to that mass, i.e. the physics of gravitational collapse, the familiar conformal transformation of a usual mass is recovered. The case of scalar-tens…
The conformal transformation of the Hawking-Hayward quasi-local mass is reexamined. It has been found recently that the conformal transformation of the latter exhibits the 'wrong' conformal factor compared to the way usual masses transform under conformal transformations of spacetime. We show, in analogy with what was found recently for the Misner-Sharp mass, that unlike the purely geometric definition of the Hawking-Hayward mass, the latter exhibits the 'right' conformal factor whenever expressed in terms of its material content via the field equations. The case of conformally invariant scala…
We prove the theorem: The necessary and sufficient condition for a spherically symmetric spacetime to represent an isothermal perfect fluid (barotropic equation of state with density falling off as inverse square of the curvature radius) distribution without boundary is that it is conformal to the ``minimally'' curved (gravitation only manifesting in tidal acceleration and being absent in particle trajectory) spacetime.
Instead of conformal to flat spacetime, we take the metric conformal to a spacetime which can be thought of as ``minimally'' curved in the sense that free particles experience no gravitational force yet it has non-zero curvature. The base spacetime can be written in the Kerr-Schild form in spherical polar coordinates. The conformal metric then admits the unique three parameter family of perfect fluid solution which is static and inhomogeneous. The density and pressure fall off in the curvature radial coordinates as $R^{-2}, $ for unbounded cosmological model with a barotropic equation of state…
