We discuss the implications of the time-energy uncertainty relation to recoillessly emitted and captured neutrinos (Mossbauer neutrinos) and show that it does not preclude oscillations of these neutrinos, contrary to a recent claim (J. Phys. G35 (2008) 095003, arXiv:0803.0527).
We comment on the paper "On application of the time-energy uncertainty relation to Mössbauer neutrino experiments" (see arXiv: 0803.1424) in which our paper "Time-energy uncertainty relations for neutrino oscillation and Mössbauer neutrino experiment" (see arXiv: 0803.0527) has been criticized. We argue that this critique is a result of misinterpretation: The authors of (arXiv: 0803.1424) do not take into account (or do not accept) the fact that at present there exist different schemes of neutrino oscillations which can not be distinguished in usual neutrino oscillation experiments. We stress …
Using the Mandelstam-Tamm method we derive time-energy uncertainty relations for neutrino oscillations. We demonstrate that the small energy uncertainty of antineutrinos in a recently considered experiment with recoilless resonant (Mössbauer) production and absorption of tritium antineutrinos is in conflict with the energy uncertainty which, according to the time-energy uncertainty relation, is necessary for neutrino oscillations to happen. A Mössbauer neutrino experiment could provide a unique possibility to test the applicability of the time-energy uncertainty relation to neutrino oscillatio…
If the neutrino analogue of the Mössbauer effect, namely, recoiless emission and resonant capture of neutrinos is realized, one can study neutrino oscillations with much shorter baselines and smaller source/detector size when compared to conventional experiments. In this work, we discuss the potential of such a Mössbauer neutrino oscillation experiment to probe nonstandard neutrino properties coming from some new physics beyond the standard model. We investigate four scenarios for such new physics that modify the standard oscillation pattern. We consider the existence of a light sterile neutri…
We demonstrate the correspondence between quantum mechanical and quantum field theoretical descriptions of Mossbauer neutrino oscillations. First, we compute the combined rate $Γ$ of Mossbauer neutrino emission, propagation, and detection in quantum field theory, treating the neutrino as an internal line of a tree level Feynman diagram. We include explicitly the effect of homogeneous line broadening due to fluctuating electromagnetic fields in the source and detector crystals and show that the resulting formula for $Γ$ is identical to the one obtained previously (Akhmedov et al., arXiv:0802.25…
We discuss neutrino oscillations in an experiment with Mössbauer recoilless resonance absorbtion of tritium antineutrinos, proposed recently by Raghavan. We demonstrate that small energy uncertainty of antineutrinos which ensures a large resonance absorption cross section is in a conflict with the energy uncertainty which, according to the time-energy uncertainty relation, is necessary for neutrino oscillations to happen. The search for neutrino oscillations in the Mössbauer neutrino experiment would be an important test of the applicability of the time-energy uncertainty relation to a newly d…
We calculate the probability of recoilless emission and detection of neutrinos (Mossbauer effect with neutrinos) taking into account the boundedness of the parent and daughter nuclei in the neutrino source and detector as well as the leptonic mixing. We show that, in spite of their near monochromaticity, the recoillessly emitted and captured neutrinos oscillate. After a qualitative discussion of this issue, we corroborate and extend our results by computing the combined rate of $\barν_e$ production, propagation and detection in the framework of quantum field theory, starting from first princip…
A number of misleading or incorrect comments by C.Giunti on seven arXiv preprints that I have written on the theory of neutrino oscillations are discussed. The essential new features of my approach are also briefly reviewed
We comment on the paper ``Remarks on flavor-neutrino propagators and oscillation formulae'' [Phys. Rev. D64, 013011 (2001)]. We show that the conclusions presented in that paper do not apply to the exact field theoretical oscillation formulae obtained in the BV formalism (for three flavors) which are free from the dependence on arbitrary mass parameters, account for CP violation and reduce to the usual quantum mechanical (Pontecorvo) three flavor oscillation formulae in the relativistic limit.
The definition of `lepton flavour eigenstates' introduced in a recent paper hep-ph/0302045 is in disagreement with the Standard Model prediction for the structure of the leptonic charged current and implies the absence of neutrino oscillations following pion decay, in contradiction to experimental data
I discuss some problems connected with the high precision study of neutrino oscillations. In the general case of $n$-neutrino mixing I derive a convenient expression for transition probability in which only independent terms (and mass-squared differences) enter. For three-neutrino mixing I discuss a problem of a definition of a large (atmospheric) neutrino mass-squared difference. I comment also possibilities to reveal the character of neutrino mass spectrum in future reactor neutrino experiments.
The theory underlying neutrino oscillations has been described at length in the literature. The neutrino state produced by a weak decay is usually portrayed as a linear superposition of mass eigenstates with, variously, equal energies or equal momenta. We point out that such a description is incomplete, that in fact, the neutrino is entangled with the other particle or particles emerging from the decay. We offer an analysis of oscillation phenomena involving neutrinos (applying equally well to neutral mesons) that takes entanglement into account. Thereby we present a theoretically sound proof …
As pointed out previously, some of the hypotheses used in the standard discussion of the quantum mechanics neutrino oscillations, recently summarised in the paper `Theory of Neutrino Oscillations' by C.Giunti, lack any physical foundation and lead to neglect of both a factor of two correction in the contribution of neutrino propagation to the oscillation phase and an important contribution to the latter from the propagator of the source particle.
We consider the effect of thermal broadening of the $^7$Be neutrino on vacuum oscillation solutions of the solar neutrino problem and analyze the conditions under which the electron-neutrino survival probability must be averaged over neutrino energy. For "just-so" solutions with $Δm^2$ of order $5 \times 10^{-11}~{\rm eV}^2$ averaging is not necessary, but for much larger values, it is. We analyze the effective broadening due to the extended production region in the Sun and find similar results. We also comment on the possibility of seasonal variations of the $^7$Be neutrino signal.
In arXiv:2209.00561 our treatment arXiv:2208.03736 of effects of particles emitted together with neutrinos on neutrino wave packets is criticized on several grounds. We show here that this criticism is based on misinterpretation of our results and is invalid. Our conclusions and, in particular, the conclusion that neutrino wave packet separation effects are unobservable in reactor and neutrino source experiments, remain unchanged.
Comment on "Neutrino oscillations originate from virtual excitation of $Z$ bosons" and "Neutrinos produced from $β$ decays of neutrons cannot be in coherent superpositions of different mass eigenstates"
We point out three apparent inconsistencies in the treatment of oscillation coherence from reactor neutrino and source neutrino experiments in recent paper "Damping of neutrino oscillations, decoherence and the lengths of neutrino wave packets''. First, that the dependence of the oscillation probability upon the subsequent interactions of entangled recoil particles implies causality violations and in some situations superluminal signaling; second, that integrating over a non-orthogonal basis for the entangled recoil leads to unphysical effects; and third, that the question of what interactions…
We consider the problem of determination of the neutrino mass ordering via precise study of the vacuum neutrino oscillations in the JUNO and other future medium baseline reactor neutrino experiments. We are proposing to resolve neutrino mass ordering by determination of the neutrino oscillation parameters from analysis of the data of the reactor experiments and comparison them with the oscillation parameters obtained from analysis of the solar and KamLAND experiments.
The evidence for $ν_μ$ disappearance in the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino experiment and the negative searches for $ν_e$ disappearance in the CHOOZ reactor experiment can be easily reconciled by assuming oscillations with large amplitude in the $ν_μ\leftrightarrowν_τ$ channel and small (or null) amplitude in the $ν_μ\leftrightarrowν_e$ channel. It has been claimed, however, that some oscillation scenarios with large $ν_μ\leftrightarrowν_e$ mixing can also be constructed in agreement with the present data. We investigate quantitatively two such scenarios: (a) threefold maximal mixing; a…
We discussed how neutrino masses and oscillations are radiatively generated in an $SU(3)_L$ $\times$ $U(1)_N$ gauge model with a symmetry based on $L_e-L_μ-L_τ$ ($\equiv$$L^\prime$). The model is characterized by lepton triplets $ψ^i=(ν^i,\ell^{-i},E^{-i})$, where $E^{-i}$ are negatively charged heavy leptons, an $SU(3)_L$ triplet Higgs scalar $ξ$ and a singlet Higgs scalar $k^{++}$. These Higgs scalars can be interpreted as a Zee's and Zee-Babu's scalar for radiative mechanisms. We demonstrated that the mass hierarchy of $Δm_{atm}^2$ $\gg$ $Δm_\odot^2$ arise as a consequence of the dynamical …
We briefly outline the present state of the $n\bar{n}$ transition problem and analyse the recent manuscript of the Vladimir Kopeliovich (arXiv: 0912.5065).
The neutrino mass hierarchy can be determined, in principle, by measuring a phase in the disappearance oscillation probability in vacuum, without relying on the matter effect, using a single channel. This phase is not the same for the normal and inverted neutrino mass spectra. In this paper, we give a complete description and physics understanding of the method. The key feature of the method is to detect advancement (normal) or retardation (inverted) of the phase of the atmospheric-scale oscillation relative to the solar-scale oscillation. We then show that this method can be realized with the…
We provide a short summary of three-flavour neutrino oscillation parameters as determined from a global fit to 2008 data, and we comment on possible hints in favour of a non-zero value of the mixing angle theta_{13} found in arXiv:0806.2649. We do confirm a hint from solar + KamLAND data at about 1.5 sigma, which can be understood from the recent SNO CC/NC measurment. However, we show that a claimed hint from atmospheric data is much less robust. It depends on details of event rate calculations and treatment of theoretical uncertainties. We could identify two data points showing an 'excess' (a…
We comment on the recent paper by A. D. Dolgov, S. H. Hansen, S. Pastor and D. V. Semikoz (DHPS) [Astropart. Phys. {\bf 14}, 79 (2000)] on the generation of neutrino asymmetries from active-sterile neutrino oscillations. We demonstrate that the approximate asymmetry evolution equation obtained therein is an expansion, up to a minor discrepancy, of the well-established static approximation equation, valid only when the supposedly new higher order correction term is small. In the regime where this so-called ``back-reaction'' term is large and artificially terminates the asymmetry growth, their e…
The neutrino flux used in Becker-Szendy {\em et al.}\cite{BZ} is now known to be in error. Becker-Szendy {\em et al.}\cite{BZ} depended heavily on the Lee and Koh flux\cite{LeeKoh} which was noted as erroneous in Gaisser {\em et al.}\cite{Bug}. This makes the results of Becker-Szendy {\em et al.}\cite{BZ} unreliable.
In a recent Letter, Kusenko and Segre proposed a new mechanism to explain the observed proper motions of pulsars. Their mechanism was based on the asymmetric neutrino emission induced by neutrino oscillations in the protoneutron star magnetic field. In this note I point out that their estimate of the asymmetry in the neutrino emission is incorrect. A proper calculation shows that their mechanism at least requires a magnetic field of 10**16 G in order to produce the observed average pulsar velocity.
Recently Hall, Murayama and Weiner (Phys. Rev. Lett. 84 (2000) 2572, [hep-ph/9911341]) claimed that neutrino oscillation data are well accounted for by a neutrino mass matrix which appears to have random entries. Here this claim is disputed by constructing a specific counter example. Structure in the neutrino mass matrix is clearly preferred over random matrices.
It has been suggested that the temporal oscillations in the rate of decay of Pr ions reported in the GSI K-capture experiment arise from interference between different values of the momentum of the Pr ions. It is shown here that any such interference cannot contribute to the decay rate of those ions.
In JHEP {\bf 1304}, 009 (2013) and arXiv:1303.2534 [hep-ph] the {\it reach of INO experiment} for determination of neutrino mass hierarchy and the sensitivity to both $Δm_{32}^2$ and $θ_{23}$ have been reported, which are significantly underestimated and drastically different from earlier studies JHEP {\bf 1107}, 048 (2011), Phys. Rev. D {\bf 81}, 037302 (2010) and strongly dependent on the flux uncertainties. Here, we clarified that the effect on oscillation probability due to change of oscillation parameters are not considered appropriately due to improper binning of data, improper incorpora…
We point out that the assumption of Lorentz noninvariance examined recently by Coleman and Glashow leads to neutrino flavor oscillations which are phenomenologically equivalent to those obtained by assuming the neutrinos violate the principle of equivalence. We then comment on the limits on Lorentz noninvariance which can be derived from solar, atmospheric, and accelerator neutrino experiments.

In a recent paper [arXiv:0901.0790], we showed that there is a neat geometric interpretation of two flavor neutrino oscillation formulae, and that the geometric phase involved in the physics of oscillations is restricted to be topological as long as CP is conserved. This paper has been criticised by Bhandari [arXiv:1006.5935]. In the present note, we show that the criticisms are not valid and only reflect his failure to understand some crucial points.
We have recently proposed an explanation for the birth velocities of pulsars based on neutrino oscillations (hep-ph/9606428). One of the quantities, dN/dT, was evaluated in the approximation of constant chemical potential for the electrons. An alternative approximation based on the assumption Ye=const, used by Qian (astro-ph/9705055), yields a somewhat higher prediction for the magnetic field inside a neutron star. If the same input parameters are used, the two approximations are in reasonable agreement, given the uncertainty in the geometry of the magnetic field and the simplified picture of …
It has been suggested that the reported temporal oscillations in the weak decay of H-like ions circulating in the GSI storage ring may be accounted for by interference between two different momentum components of the wave function of the parent ions. In that model, the interference is said to come about through coupling of those two momentum components to the two mass components in the wave function of the electron neutrino in the decayed state. I show here that quantum mechanics allows no such interference to contribute to the reported oscillation of the decay rate. The central issue is that …
I summarize the status of three-flavour neutrino oscillations with date of Oct. 2007, and provide an outlook for the developments to be expected in the near future. Furthermore, I discuss the status of sterile neutrino oscillation interpretations of the LSND anomaly in the light of recent MiniBooNE results, and comment on implications for the future neutrino oscillation program.
I describe an attempt to understand the significance of the atmospheric neutrino deficit observed by the Kamiokande neutrino detector. In particular, I am concerned with the statistical significance quoted for the zenith-angle dependence of the deficit, which has been cited as evidence for neutrino flavor oscillations free of systematic uncertainties.
We critically examine the recent claim (gr-qc/9603008) of a ``new effect'' of gravitationally induced quantum mechanical phases in neutrino oscillations. A straightforward exercise in the Schwarzschild coordinates appropriate to a spherically symmetric non-rotating star shows that, although there is a general relativistic effect of the star's gravity on neutrino oscillations, it is not of the form claimed, and is too small to be measured.
Predictions are presented for the oscillation phase in neutrino oscillations following pion decay at rest and in flight, muon decay and nuclear $β-$decay at rest as well as for muon oscillations following pion decay at rest and in flight. The neutrino oscillation phases found disagree with the conventionally used value: $ϕ_{12} = Δm^2 L/(2P)$. The same oscillation phase is found for neutrino and muon oscillations following pion decay at rest. Shortcomings of previous treatments of the quantum mechanics of neutrino oscillations are commented on.
We critically analyze the claims with regard to the relevance of topological phases in the physics of neutrino oscillation made in a recent paper [Phys. Rev. D 79, 096013 (2009)] and point out some inappropriate exaggerations and misleading statements. We find that the $π$ phase described in this paper, while interesting, is an artefact of two major approximations made in the paper. We point out a more robust and more familiar $π$ phase in the neutrino oscillation formulae which can be interpreted as a pure Pancharatnam phase. We also make some relevant remarks on the distinction between the g…
We review the basic mechanisms of neutrino mass generation and the corresponding structure of the lepton mixing matrix. We summarize the status of three-neutrino oscillation parameters as determined from current observations, using state-of-the-art solar and atmospheric neutrino fluxes, as well as latest experimental data as of September 2007. We also comment on recent attempts to account for these results and to understand flavour from first principles. We discuss extensively the prospects for probing the strength of CP violation in two near term accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments, …
We show that the conditions for total neutrino conversion found in [1] are equivalent to the conditions of maximal depth (parametric resonance) and ($π/2 + πk$) - phase of parametric oscillations. Therefore the effects considered in [1] are a particular case of the parametric resonance in neutrino oscillations. The existence of strong enhancement peaks in transition probability P rather than the condition P=1 is of physical relevance. We comment on possible realizations and implications of the parametric enhancement of neutrino oscillations.
I summarize the status of neutrino oscillations that follow from current data, including the status of the small parameters ratio of solar-over-atmospheric splitting and $\sin^2θ_{13}$ characterizing the strength of CP violation in neutrino oscillations. I briefly discuss the impact of oscillation data on the prospects for probing the absolute scale of neutrino mass in neutrinoless double beta decay. I also comment on the theoretical origin of neutrino mass, mentioning recent attemps to explain current data from first principles.
We argue how pseudo-Dirac scenario for neutrinos leads to rich neutrino oscillation phenomena, including oscillation inside each generation. The pseudo-Dirac scenario is generalized by incorporating generation mixings and formulae for the various neutrino oscillations are derived. As the application we compare the formulae with the corresponding data. We find that observed pattern of mixings, such as almost maximal mixing in the atmospheric neutrino oscillation, is naturally explained in the generalized Pseudo-Dirac scenario with small generation mixings. We, however, also point out that there…
We present a new and novel synthesis of all existing neutrino data regarding the disappearance and appearance of $ν_e$ and $ν_μ$. We assume four neutrinos: $ν_e, ν_μ, ν_τ$, as well as a heavier singlet neutrino $ν_s$ of a few eV. The latter may decay into a massless Goldstone boson (the singlet Majoron) and a linear combination of the doublet antineutrinos. We comment on how this scenario may be verified or falsified in future experiments.
I summarize the status of three--neutrino oscillations that follow from combining the relevant world's data. The discussion includes the small parameters Delta_m-sol/Delta_m-atm and \sin^2θ_{13}, which characterize the strength of CP violation in neutrino oscillations, the impact of oscillation data on the prospects for probing the absolute scale of neutrino mass in \nbb and the robustness of the neutrino oscillation interpretation itself in the presence of non-standard physics. I also comment on the theoretical origin of neutrino mass, mentioning recent attemps to explain current oscillation …
A mechanism of radiatively generating neutrino masses is implemented in an SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y x SU(2)'_L x U(1)'_Y model, where the first and second families respect SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y while SU(2)'_L x U(1)'_Y is specific for the third family. The fourth neutrino, nu_s, that has a U(1)_Y x U(1)'_Y coupling joins in the model to induce neutrino mixings by additional interactions with e and mu. The phenomenologically consistent oscillation of nu_s - nu_e requires a dominated coupling of nu_s to e.
We investigate the implications of a possible excess of the electron neutrino events in the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino experiment. The excess, if real, leads to constraints on the $ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_e$, $ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_τ$ and $ν_e \leftrightarrow ν_τ$ oscillation parameters. Specifically, the excess impies that $ν_e - ν_μ$ and $ν_μ- ν_τ$ mixings are large and $ν_e - ν_τ$ mixing is small. We show that the electron neutrino excess favors the large mixing angle MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem.
We present the results of an analysis of the data of reactor and accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments in the framework of a model with mixing of three massive neutrino fields and a neutrino mass hierarchy. The results of the LSND experiment are commented. Taking into account future long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, we have also analyzed the atmospheric neutrino data in the framework of the model.
We consider elastic antineutrino-electron scattering taking into account possible effects of neutrino masses and mixing and of neutrino magnetic moments and electric dipole moments. Having in mind antineutrinos produced in a nuclear reactor we compute, in particular, the weak-electromagnetic interference terms which are linear in the magnetic (electric dipole) moments and also in the neutrino masses. We show that these terms are, however, suppressed compared to the pure weak and electromagnetic cross section. We also comment upon the possibility of using the electromagnetic cross section to in…
I review some aspects concerning the physics of neutrino mixing and oscillations. I discuss in some detail the physical neutrino oscillations parameter space in the case of two and three family mixing, and briefly describe the current knowledge of neutrino mixing parameters according to the present solar, atmospheric, and reactor neutrino data. I also briefly comment on the possibility of solving the LNSD anomaly together with the solar and atmospheric ones. I conclude by emphasising that that even though in five to ten years time a lot will be learnt from the next round of neutrino experiment…
I give a brief overview over various attempts to reconcile the LSND evidence for oscillations with all other global neutrino data, including the results from MiniBooNE. I discuss the status of oscillation schemes with one or more sterile neutrinos and comment on various exotic proposals.
Recently, many authors showed that if the solar and atmospheric neutrino data are both described by maximal mixing vacuum oscillations at the relevant mass scale, then there exists a unique bi-maximal lepton mixing matrix for three neutrino flavors. We construct the lepton mass matrices from the symmetry principle so that maximal mixings for the atmospheric and the solar neutrino vacuum oscillations are naturally generated. Although the hierarchical patterns of the lepton sector are quite different from each other, we show how two different mass matrices suggested in this work can be generated…
A new flavor changing electron neutrino interaction with matter would always dominate the nu_e oscillation probability at sufficiently high neutrino energies. Being suppressed by theta_{13}, the energy scale at which the new effect starts to be relevant may be within the reach of realistic experiments, where the peculiar dependence of the signal with energy could give rise to a clear signature in the nu_e --> nu_tau channel. The latter could be observed by means of a coarse large magnetized detector by exploiting tau --> mu decays. We discuss the possibility of identifying or constraining such…
We construct a mass matrix for the four neutrino flavors, three active and one sterile, needed to fit oscillations in all three neutrino experiments: atmospheric, solar, and LSND, simultaneously. It organizes the neutrinos into two doublets whose central values are about 1 eV apart, and whose splittings are of the order of 10^(-3) eV. Atmospheric neutrino oscillations are described as maximal mixing within the upper doublet, and solar as the same within the lower doublet. Then LSND is a weak transition from one doublet to the other. We comment on the Majorana versus Dirac nature of the active …
I summarize the determination of neutrino oscillation parameters within the three-flavor framework from world neutrino oscillation data with date of May 2006, including the first results from the MINOS long-baseline experiment. It is illustrated how the determination of the leading "solar" and "atmospheric" parameters, as well as the bound on $θ_{13}$ emerge from an interplay of various complementary data sets. Furthermore, I discuss possible implications of sub-leading three-flavor effects in present atmospheric neutrino data induced by $Δm^2_{21}$ and $θ_{13}$ for the bound on $θ_{13}$ and n…
We discuss the possibility of sterile neutrinos taking shortcuts in extra dimensions, and the consequences for neutrino oscillations. This effect influences the active-sterile neutrino mixing and provides a possibility to accommodate the LSND evidence for neutrino oscillations together with bounds from accelerator and reactor experiments. We briefly comment on causality in such schemes.
We propose a new pattern of the neutrino mixing matrix which can be parametrized as the product of an arbitrary Hermitian matrix and the well-known tri-bimaximal mixing matrix. In this scenario, nontrivial values of the smallest neutrino mixing angle θ_13 and the CP-violating phases entirely arise from the non-unitary corrections. We present a complete set of series expansion formulas for neutrino oscillation probabilities both in vacuum and in matter of constant density. We do a numerical analysis to show the non-unitary effects on neutrino oscillations. The possibility of determining small n…
Since right-handed neutrinos, if added to the Standard Model, have no gauge interactions, their kinetic terms can be mixed. I examine the related rotations of the gauge eigenstates in order to derive the propagators for the kinetic and mass terms, and I comment on the resulting lepton mixing, on the possibility of not having well-defined mass eigenstates, and on the modifications to weak contributions and observables (anomalous magnetic moment, muon decay, neutrino oscillations).
We suggest a minimal extension of the simplest A4 flavour model that can induce a nonzero theta13 value, as required by recent neutrino oscillation data from reactors and accelerators. The predicted correlation between the atmospheric mixing angle theta23 and the magnitude of theta13 leads to an allowed region substantially smaller than indicated by neutrino oscillation global fits. Moreover, the scheme correlates CP violation in neutrino oscillations with the octant of the atmospheric mixing parameter theta23 in such a way that, for example, maximal mixing necessarily violates CP. We briefly …
