We describe the results of a mJy-sensitivity, VLA survey of roughly 1 square degree near the Galactic center at 6 and 20 cm. Catalogs of compact and filamentary structures are given and compared to previous surveys of the region. Eight of the unusual, nonthermal radio filaments are detected in 6 cm polarized emission; three of these are the first such detections, confirming their nonthermal nature. This survey found emission from a filament at (l,b)=(359.1,0.75), or a projected distance from Sgr A* of 200 pc, greatly extending the latitude range observed with such features. There is also new evidence for spatial gradients in the 6/20 cm spectral indices of some filaments and we discuss models for these gradients. In studying compact sources, the combination of spectral index and polarization information allows us to identify pulsar candidates and compact HII regions in the survey. There is also some evidence that the flux measurements of compact sources may be affected by electron scattering from the interstellar medium in the cent ral few hundred parsecs of the Galaxy.
We present VLA 3.5 cm continuum observations of the Serpens cloud core. 22 radio continuum sources are detected. 16 out of the 22 cm sources are suggested to be associated with young stellar objects (Class 0, Class I, flat-spectrum, and Class II) of the young Serpens cluster. The rest of the VLA sources plausibly are background objects. Most of the Serpens cm sources likely represent thermal radio jets; on the other hand, the radio continuum emission of some sources could be due to a gyrosynchroton mechanism arising from coronally active young stars. The Serpens VLA sources are spatially distr…
The low frequency radio luminosity is believed to be an indicator of jet power, while the optical/UV emission is probably from accretion discs in the nuclei of steep-spectrum radio quasars. We present a correlation between the ratio of radio to optical luminosities and the continuum spectral index in blue/UV bands, which might indicate that the continuum shape in blue/UV bands is related to the ratio of jet to accretion power. The results may imply that the spectra and structure of accretion discs are probably affected by the interactions between jets and discs.
Using the Very Large Array (VLA) the C76$α$ and C53$α$ recombination lines (RLs) have been detected toward the ultra-compact \HII\ region (UCHII region) G35.20$-$1.74. We also obtained upper limits to the carbon RLs at 6 cm (C110$α$ & C111$α$) and 3.6 cm (C92$α$) wavelengths with the VLA. In addition, continuum images of the W48A complex (which includes G35.20$-$1.74) are made with angular resolutions in the range 14\arcsec to 2\arcsec. Modeling the multi-wavelength line and continuum data has provided the physical properties of the UCHII region and the photodissociation region (PDR) responsib…
We present observations in the H53alpha line and radio continuum at 43 GHz carried out with the VLA in the D array (2'' angular resolution) toward the starburst galaxy NGC 5253. VLA archival data have been reprocessed to produce a uniform set of 2, 1.3 and 0.7 cm high angular (0.''2 X 0.''1) radio continuum images. The RRL H53alpha, a previously reported measurement of the H92alpha RRL flux density and the reprocessed high angular resolution radio continuum flux densities have been modeled using a collection of HII regions. Based on the models, the ionized gas in the nuclear source has an elec…
We have conducted phase-reference multi-epoch observations of the 22.2 GHz water masers using the VLBA and multi-frequency study of the continuum emission using the VLA towards the high-mass SFR AFGL 5142. The water maser emission comes from two elongated structures (indicated as Group I and Group II), with the measured proper motions aligned along the structures' elongation axes. Each group consists of two (blue- and red-shifted) clusters of features separated by a few hundreds and thousands of AU respectively for Group I and Group II. The maser features of Group II have both positions and ve…
We present multi-frequency VLA continuum observations towards 8 star forming regions with molecular and optical outflows: L1489, HH 68-69, HH 94-95, NGC 2264D, L1681B, L778, MWC 1080 and V645 Cyg. We detect three thermal radio jets, L1489, YLW 16A in L1681B and NGC 2264D VLA 7, associated with molecular and/or HH outflows. The L1489 and NGC 2264D VLA 7 thermal radio jets appear elongated in the direction of the larger scale outflow. We report the first tentative detection of a non-thermal radio jet, L778 VLA 5, associated with a low mass Class I protostar and powering a molecular outflow. For …
In the first paper of this series we used HI observations of the 19 brightest spirals in Coma to analyze the dynamical state of the cluster. In this paper we present the detailed HI distribution and kinematics of the spirals that were detected in HI, and radio continuum data for a sample of star forming and post starburst galaxies in Coma. We discuss the importance of ICM-ISM interactions to explain the observed HI morphology. A rough comparison of observed HI sizes with predicted HI sizes from simulations by Abadi et al. (1999) gives reasonable agreement. We use the results on radio continuum…
We present a spectrum of Sgr A* observed simultaneously on June 17, 2003 at wavelengths from 90 to 0.7 cm with the VLA. In the spectrum, we also include the measurements of Sgr A* observed on the same day with the GMRT at 49 cm, the SMA at 0.89 mm and the Keck II at 3.8 $μ$m. The spectrum at the centimeter wavelengths suggests the presence of a break wavelength at 3.8 cm (8 GHz). The spectral index is alpha=0.43+-0.03 (propto nu(alpha}) at 3.8 cm and shorter wavelengths. The spectrum between 3.8 cm and 49 cm can be described by a power law with spectral index of alpha=0.10+-0.03$. We detected …
We present phase-referenced VLBI observations of the radio continuum emission from, and the H I 21 cm absorption toward, the Luminous Infrared Galaxy NGC 7674. The observations were carried out at 1380 MHz using the VLBA, the phased VLA, and theArecibo radio telescope. These observations constitute the first scientific use of the Arecibo telescope in a VLBI observation with the VLBA. The high- and low-resolution radio continuum images reveal several new continuum structures in the nuclear region of this galaxy. At ~100 mas resolution, we distinguish six continuum structures extending over 1.4 …
E+A galaxies are characterized as a galaxy with strong Balmer absorption lines but without any [OII] or Halpha emission lines. Strong Balmer absorption lines indicate that E+A galaxies have experienced a starburst within the last <1-1.5 Gyr. However, the lack of emission lines indicates that E+A galaxies do not have any on-going star formation. Therefore, E+A galaxies are interpreted as a post-starburst galaxy. However, it has been a mystery why E+A galaxies underwent a starburst then stopped abruptly. One possible explanation to E+A galaxies is the dusty starburst scenario, where E+A galaxies…
We present OH and H I Zeeman observations of the NGC 6334 complex taken with the Very Large Array. The OH absorption profiles associated with the complex are relatively narrow (del-v_FWHM ~ 3 km s^1) and single-peaked over most of the sources. The H I absorption profiles contain several blended velocity components. One of the compact continuum sources in the complex (source A) has a bipolar morphology. The OH absorption profiles toward this source display a gradient in velocity from the northern continuum lobe to the southern continuum lobe; this velocity gradient likely indicates a bipolar ou…
We present millimeter interferometric observations of the young stellar object SVS13 in NCG1333 in the N2H+(1-0) line and at 1.4 and 3mm dust continuum, using the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer. The results are complemented by infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope. The millimeter dust continuum images resolve four sources (A, B, C, and VLA3) in SVS13. With the dust continuum images, we derive gas masses of 0.2-1.1 M_sun for the sources. N2H+(1-0) line emission is detected and spatially associated with the dust continuum sources B and VLA3. The observed mean line width is ~0.48 km…
We emphasize the importance of observations of young supernovae in wide radio band. We argue on the basis of observational results that only high or only low frequency data is not sufficient to get full physical picture of the shocked plasma. In the SN 1993J composite spectrum obtained with Very Large Array (VLA) and Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), around day 3200, we see observational evidence of synchrotron cooling, which leads us to the direct determination of the magnetic field independent of the equipartition assumption, as well as the relative strengths of the magnetic field and …
The NRAO VLA and VLBA were used from 1988 November to 1998 June to monitor the radio continuum counterpart to the optical broad line region (BLR) in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 5548. Photometric and astrometric observations were obtained at 21 epochs. The radio nucleus appeared resolved, so comparisons were limited to observations spanning 10-60 days and 3-4 yr, and acquired at matched resolutions of 1210 mas = 640 pc (9 VLA observations), 500 mas = 260 pc (9 VLA observations), or 2.3 mas = 1.2 pc (3 VLBA observations). The nucleus is photometrically variable at 8.4 GHz by $33\pm5$% and $52\pm5$% b…
We report the first spatially resolved radio continuum measurements of the Mira AB symbiotic binary system, based on observations obtained with the Very Large Array (VLA). This is the first time that a symbiotic binary has been resolved unambiguously at centimeter wavelengths. We describe the results of VLA monitoring of both stars over a ten month period, together with constraints on their individual spectral energy distributions, variability, and radio emission mechanisms. The emission from Mira A is consistent with originating from a radio photosphere, while the emission from Mira B appears…
We present high angular resolution (0.7'') observations made with the Very Large Array (VLA) of the radio recombination line (RRL) H53alpha and radio continuum emission at 43 GHz from the ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) Arp 220. The 43 GHz continuum emission shows a compact structure (~2'') with two peaks separated by ~1'', the East (E) and West (W) components, that correspond to each galactic nucleus of the merger. The spectral indices for both the E and W components, using radio continuum images at 8.3 and 43 GHz are typical of synchrotron emission (alpha ~ -1.0). Our 43 GHz continuum …
UBVR photometry of a sample of B3-VLA radio quasars, about 80 per cent complete, is used to analyse their spectral energy distribution (SED). The SEDs are generally well fitted with power-laws, with an average slope alpha=-0.39 (S_nu propto nu^alpha). Two quasars appear clearly differenciated, exhibiting redder colours that the rest, and they have redshifts z=0.50 and 1.12. Broad-band composite SEDs in the range 1300-4500 AA were obtained from the remaining quasars and they show the CIV1549 line and a break at around 3000 A, where the SED changes from alpha_blue=0.11+-0.16 at lambda>3000 A to …
We present 8.4 GHz VLA A-array and 1.4 GHz VLBA results on the radio continuum emission from the highest redshift radio-loud quasar known to date, the $z=6.12$ QSO J1427+3312. The VLA observations show an unresolved steep spectrum source with a flux density of $250 \pm 20$ uJy at 8.4GHz and a spectral index value of $α^{8.4}_{1.4}=-1.1$. The 1.4 GHz VLBA images reveal several continuum components with a total flux density of $1.778 \pm 0.109$ mJy, which is consistent with the flux density measured with the VLA at 1.4 GHz. Each of these components is resolved with sizes of a few milliarcseconds…
A model of wavelength-dependent lags in optical continuum variability of AGNs is proposed which avoids the problems of the popular ``lamp-post'' model. Rather than being due to reprocessing of high-energy radiation from a hypothetical source above the accretion disk, the wavelength-dependent delays observed from the B to I bands are instead due to contamination of an intrinsically coherently variable continuum with the Wien tail of the thermal emission from the hot dust in the surrounding torus. The new model correctly gives the size, wavelength dependence, and luminosity dependence of the lag…
We present new continuum VLA observations of the nearby Sy 1.5 galaxy NGC 5033, made at 4.9 and 8.4 GHz on 8 April 2003. Combined with VLA archival observations at 1.4 and 4.9 GHz made on 7 August 1993, 29 August 1999, and 31 October 1999, we sample the galaxy radio emission at scales ranging from the nuclear regions (<~ 100 pc) to the outer regions of the disk (~ 40 kpc). The high-resolution VLA images show a core-jet structure for the Sy 1.5 nucleus. While the core has a moderately steep non-thermal radio spectrum (S_ν~ ν^α; α_{1.5}^{4.9} \approx -0.4), the inner kpc region shows a steeper s…
Using the most recent (April 2003) version of the VLA FIRST survey radio catalog, we have searched for radio emission from $>2800$ AGN taken from the most recent (2001) version of the Veron-Cetty and Veron AGN catalog. These AGN lie in the ~9033 square degrees of sky already covered by the VLA FIRST survey. Our work has resulted in positive detection of radio emission from 775 AGN of which 214 are new detections at radio wavelengths.
We describe a model-independent method of assessing the uncertainties in cross-correlation lags determined from AGN light curves, and use this method to investigate the reality of lags between UV and optical continuum variations in well-studied AGNs. Our results confirm the existence of such lags in NGC 7469. We find that the continuum variations at 1825 A, 4845 A, and 6962 A follow those at 1315A by 0.22^{+0.12}_{-0.13} days, 1.25^{+0.48}_{-0.35} days, and 1.84^{+0.93}_{-0.94} days, respectively, based on the centroids of the cross-correlation functions; the error intervals quoted correspond …
When verifying a sophisticated numerical code, it is a usual practice to compare the results with reliable solutions obtained by other means. This work provides such solutions for the wavelength dependent dust radiative transfer problem. We define a set of benchmark problems in spherical geometry and solve them by three radiative transfer codes which implement different numerical schemes. Results for the dust temperature and emerging spectra agree to better than 0.1%, and can be used as benchmark solutions for the verification of the dust radiative transfer codes.
The VLA Galactic Plane Survey (VGPS) consists of measurements of the 21cm HI line and 1420 MHz continuum at 1' angular resolution over much of the first quadrant of Galactic longitude within a few degrees of the Galactic plane. In combination with similar surveys of the fourth longitude quadrant and the outer Galaxy made with other instruments, the VGPS will provide comprehensive data on the interstellar medium in most of the regions of active star formation in the Galaxy. This paper describes the parameters of the VGPS, reports on its status, and discusses some early scientific results from t…
We present new high resolution and high sensitivity multi-frequency VLA radio continuum observations of the G9.62+0.19-F hot molecular core. We detect for the first time faint centimetric radio continuum emission at the position of the core. The centimetric continuum spectrum of the source is consistent with thermal emission from ionised gas. This is the first direct evidence that a newly born massive star is powering the G9.62+0.19-F hot core.
We report multifrequency radio continuum and hydrogen radio recombination line observations of HII regions near l=24.8d b=0.1d using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at 1.28 GHz (n=172), 0.61 GHz (n=220) and the Very Large Array (VLA) at 1.42 GHz (n=166). The region consists of a large number of resolved HII regions and a few compact HII regions as seen in our continuum maps, many of which have associated infrared (IR) point sources. The largest HII region at l=24.83d and b=0.1d is a few arcmins in size and has a shell-type morphology. It is a massive HII region enclosing ~ 550 solar…
A recent comparison between deep VLA HI observations and dynamical models of the Virgo cluster spiral galaxy NGC 4654 has shown that only a model involving a combination of a tidal interaction and ram pressure can reproduce the data. Deep radio polarization studies, together with detailed MHD modeling, can independently verify those conclusions, that are based on HI observations and dynamical models. We performed deep polarized radio-continuum observations of the Virgo cluster spiral galaxy NGC 4654 with the Effelsberg 100m telescope at 8.35 GHz and the VLA at 4.85 GHz. Detailed 3D MHD simulat…
We have carried out 21 cm radio continuum observations of 16 UC HII regions using the VLA (D-array) in search of associated extended emission. We have also observed H76$_α$ recombination line towards all the sources and He76$_α$ line at the positions with strong H76$_α$ line emission. The UC HII regions have simple morphologies and large (>10) ratios of single-dish to VLA fluxes. Extended emission was detected towards all the sources. The extended emission consists of one to several compact components and a diffuse extended envelope. All the UC HII regions but two are located in the compact co…
By exploiting the far-infrared(FIR) and radio correlation, we have performed the Likelihood-Ratio analysis to identify optical counterparts to the far-infrared sources in the Lockman Hole. Using the likelihood ratio analysis and the associated reliability, 44 FIR sources have been identified with radio sources. Redshifts have been obtained for 29 out of 44 identified sources. One hyper-luminous infrared galaxy (HyLIRG) with and four ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are identified in our sample. The space density of the FIR sources at z = 0.3-0.6 is 4.6\times 10^{-5}Mpc^{-3}, implying a…
Properties of CFRS field galaxies up to z=1 are discussed. Estimations of the cosmic star formation rate (SFR) lead to serious problems if they not account for AGN emissions and for light reemitted at IR wavelengths. Deep ISOCAM and VLA photometries on one CFRS field have been performed. Multi-wavelength analyses from UV to Mid-IR and hence to radio allow us to classify sources from their spectral energy distributions. This provides an estimation of the FIR luminosity density related to star formation. The deduced SFR density is free of extinction effects and not contaminated by AGN emissions.…
We present high angular resolution Very Large Array multi-epoch continuum observations at 3.6 cm and 7 mm towards the core of the L723 multipolar outflow revealing a multiple system of four radio sources suspected to be YSOs in a region of only ~4 arcsecs (1200 AU) in extent. The 3.6 cm observations show that the previously detected source VLA 2 contains a close (separation ~0.29 arcsecs or ~90 AU) radio binary, with components (A and B) along a position angle of ~150 degrees. The northern component (VLA 2A) of this binary system is also detected in the 7 mm observations, with a positive spect…
We present VLA radio continuum observations at 3.6 and 6 cm of a ~0.65 sq.deg. field in the galactic plane at l=+45deg . These observations are meant to be used in a comparison with ISO observations at 7 and 15 um of the same region. In this paper we compare the radio results with other radio surveys and with the IRAS-PSC. At 3.6 and/or 6 cm we detect a total of 34 discrete sources, 13 of which are found in five separate extended complexes. These are all multiple or single extended thermal ultra-compact HII (UCHII) regions. While for each of these complexes an IRAS counterpart could be reliabl…
We present new deep multi-frequency radio-polarimetric images of a sample of high redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs), having redshift between 1.7 and 4.1. The radio data at 4.7 and 8.2 GHz were taken with the Very Large Array in the A configuration and provide a highest angular resolution of 0.2''. Maps of total intensity, radio spectral index, radio polarization and internal magnetic field are presented for each source. The morphology of most objects is that of standard FRII double radio sources, but several contain multiple hot-spots in one or both lobes. Compared to similar samples of HzRGs pr…
(Abridged) Deep VLT spectropolarimetric observations are presented for two powerful radio galaxies, 0850-206 and 1303+091. These observations cover the rest-frame wavelength range ~ 1450 - 3750 A. New radio observations and continuum images of the same sources are also presented. These galaxies are the first two observed from a complete sample of nine radio sources with redshifts in the range 1.3 < z < 1.5 (selected from the equatorial sample of powerful radio sources of Best, Rottgering & Lehnert), as part of a project aimed to investigate the multi-component nature of the UV continuum in rad…
We present HST/WFPC2 images in Halpha+[NII]6548,6583 lines and continuum radiation and a VLA map at 8 GHz of the H2O gigamaser galaxy TXS2226-184. This galaxy has the most luminous H2O maser emission known to date. Our red continuum images reveal a highly elongated galaxy with a dust lane crossing the nucleus. The surface brightness profile is best fitted by a bulge plus exponential disk model, favoring classification as a highly inclined spiral galaxy (i=70 degree). The color map confirms the dust lane aligned with the galaxy major axis and crossing the putative nucleus. The Halpha+[NII] map …
We present new interferometric observations of the continuum emission at mm wavelengths in the Seyfert galaxies NGC1068 and NGC3147. Three mm continuum peaks are detected in NGC1068, one centered on the core, one associated with the jet and the third one with the counter-jet. This is the first significant detection of the radio jet and counter-jet at mm wavelengths in NGC1068. While the fluxes of the jet components agree with a steep spectral index extrapolated from cm-wavelengths, the core fluxes indicate a turnover of the inverted cm- into a steep mm-spectrum at roughly 50GHz which is most l…
We present radio continuum observations at 7 mm made using the Very Large Array towards three massive star forming regions thought to be in very early stages of evolution selected from the sample of Sridharan et al. (2002). Emission was detected towards all three sources (IRAS 18470-0044, IRAS 19217+1651 and IRAS 23151+5912). We find that in all cases the 7 mm emission corresponds to thermal emission from ionized gas. The regions of ionized gas associated with IRAS 19217+1651 and IRAS 23151+5912 are hypercompact with diameters of 0.009 and 0.0006 pc, and emission measures of 7.0 x 10^8 and 2.3…
We have detected the H92alpha radio recombination line from two dwarf starburst galaxies, NGC 5253 and He 2-10, using the Very Large Array. Both the line data as well as the radio continuum data are used to model the properties of the ionized gas in the centers of these galaxies. We consider a multi-density model for radio recombination lines and show why previous models, which were based on the assumption of gas at a single density, are valid in many situations. The models show that the ionized gas has a density of ~10^4 /cc in both galaxies, with an effective size of 2-10 pc and a total mass…
The young massive star-forming region IRAS05358+3543 was observed at high-spatial resolution in the continuum emission at 3.1 and 1.2mm with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, and at 875 and 438mum with the Submillimeter Array. We resolve at least four continuum sub-sources that are likely of protostellar nature. Two of them are potentially part of a proto-binary system with a projected separation of 1700AU. Additional (sub)mm continuum peaks are not necessarily harboring protostars but maybe caused by the multiple molecular outflows. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the sub-source…
The VLA was used to determine precise positions for 4765-MHz OH maser emission sources toward star-forming regions which had been observed about seven months earlier with the Effelsberg 100-meter telescope. The observations were successful for K3-50, DR21EX, W75N, and W49A. No line was detected toward S255: this line had decreased to less than 5 per cent of the flux density observed only seven months earlier. The time-variability of the observed features during the past 30 years is summarised. In addition, to compare with the Effelsberg observations, the 4750-MHz and 4660-MHz lines were observ…
We present high angular resolution (0.6'') observations made with the VLA of the radio continuum at 8.3 and 43 GHz as well as H92 Alpha and H53 Alpha radio recombination lines from the nearby (3 Mpc) starburst galaxy M82. In the continuum we report 19 newly identified sources at 8.3 GHz and 5 at 43 GHz that were unknown previously. The spatial distribution of the H92 Alpha line is inhomogeneous; we identify 27 features. The line and continuum emission are modeled using a collection of HII regions at different distances from the nucleus assuming a single-density component and two-density compon…
The VLA Galactic Plane Survey (VGPS) is a survey of HI and 21-cm continuum emission in the Galactic plane between longitude 18 degrees 67 degr. with latitude coverage from |b| < 1.3 degr. to |b| < 2.3 degr. The survey area was observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) in 990 pointings. Short-spacing information for the HI line emission was obtained by additional observations with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). HI spectral line images are presented with a resolution of 1 arcmin x 1 arcmin x 1.56 km/s (FWHM) and rms noise of 2 K per 0.824 km/s channel. Continuum images made from channels without…
Using the most recent (1998) version of the VLA FIRST survey radio catalog, we have searched for radio emission from 1704 quasars taken from the most recent (1993) version of the Hewitt and Burbidge quasar catalog. These quasars lie in the ~5000 square degrees of sky already covered by the VLA FIRST survey. Our work has resulted in positive detection of radio emission from 389 quasars of which 69 quasars have been detected for the first time at radio wavelengths. We find no evidence of correlation between optical and radio luminosities for optically selected quasars. We find indications of a b…
The Galactic center Arches stellar cluster, detected and studied until now only in the near-infrared, is comprised of at least one hundred massive (M>20 Msun) stars. Here we report the detection at centimeter wavelengths of radio continuum emission from eight radio sources associated with the cluster. Seven of these radio sources have rising spectral indices between 4.9 and 8.5 GHz and coincide spatially with the brightest stars in the cluster, as determine from JHK photometry and Brackett alpha and Brackett Gamma spectroscopy. Our results confirm the presence of powerful ionized winds in thes…
We present multi-wavelength, high spatial resolution imaging of the IRS 7 region in the R Corona Australis molecular cloud. Our observations include 1.1 mm continuum and HCO^+ J = $3 \to 2$ images from the SMA, ^{12}CO J = $3 \to 2$ outflow maps from the DesertStar heterodyne array receiver on the HHT, 450 $μ$m and 850 $μ$m continuum images from SCUBA, and archival Spitzer IRAC and MIPS 24 \micron images. The accurate astrometry of the IRAC images allow us to identify IRS 7 with the cm source VLA 10W (IRS 7A) and the X-ray source X_W. The SMA 1.1 mm image reveals two compact continuum sources …
Sgr A*, the massive black hole at the center of the Galaxy, varies in radio through X-ray emission on hourly time scales. The flare activity is thought to arise from the innermost region of an accretion flow onto Sgr A*. We present simultaneous light curves of Sgr A* in radio, sub-mm and X-rays that show a possible time delay of 110$\pm17$ minutes between X-ray and 850 $μ$m suggesting that the sub-mm flare emission is optically thick. At radio wavelengths, we detect time lags of of $20.4\pm6.8, 30\pm12$ and 20$\pm6$ minutes between the flare peaks observed at 13 and 7 mm (22 and 43 GHz) in thr…
We present sensitive, high-resolution 21-cm VLBA+VLA observations of the radio jet and nuclear HI absorption in NGC 4151. The 25-mas (1.6-pc) resolution continuum image reveals a highly collimated radio jet, underlying the discrete components seen previously with MERLIN and the VLA. Spatially and kinematically complex HI absorption is detected against the whole 3-pc extent of the continuum component predicted by Ulvestad et al. to contain the AGN. Instead, we suggest the component against which the absorption is detected is part of the eastern counterjet, ruling it out as the location for the …
We have used the Very Large Array(VLA) in C configuration to carry out a sensitive 20cm radio survey of regions of sky that have been surveyed in the Far Infra-Red over the wavelength range 5-200 microns with ISO as part of the European Large Area ISO Survey(ELAIS). As usual in surveys based on a relatively small number of overlapping VLA pointings the flux limit varies over the area surveyed. The survey has a flux limit that varies from a 5$σ$ limit of 0.135mJy over an area of 0.12deg$^2$ to a 5$σ$ limit of 1.15mJy or better over the whole region covered of 4.22 deg$^2$. In this paper we pres…
We report on a water maser survey towards a sample of 27 planetary nebulae (PNe) using the Robledo de Chavela and Medicina single-dish antennas, as well as the Very Large Array (VLA). Two detections have been obtained: the already known water maser emission in K 3-35, and a new cluster of masers in IRAS 17347-3139. This low rate of detections is compatible with the short life-time of water molecules in PNe (~100 yr). The water maser cluster at IRAS 17347-3139 are distributed on a ellipse of size ~ 0.2" x 0.1", spatially associated with compact 1.3 cm continuum emission (simultaneously observed…
We report on new aspects of the star-forming region S235AB revealed through high-resolution observations at radio and mid-infrared wavelengths. Using the Very Large Array, we carried out sensitive observations of S235AB in the cm continuum (6, 3.6, 1.3, and 0.7) and in the 22 GHz water maser line. These were complemented with Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Array Camera archive data to clarify the correspondence between radio and IR sources. We made also use of newly presented data from the Medicina water maser patrol, started in 1987, to study the variability of the water masers found in the…
The Very Large Array (VLA) Low-frequency Sky Survey (VLSS) has imaged 95% of the 3*pi sr of sky north of declination = -30 degrees at a frequency of 74 MHz (4 meter wavelength). The resolution is 80" (FWHM) throughout, and the typical RMS noise level is ~0.1 Jy/beam. The typical point-source detection limit is 0.7 Jy/beam and so far nearly 70,000 sources have been catalogued. This survey used the 74 MHz system added to the VLA in 1998. It required new imaging algorithms to remove the large ionospheric distortions at this very low frequency throughout the entire ~11.9 degree field of view. This…
New wide-field images of the Rho Ophiuchus molecular cloud at 850 and 450 microns obtained with SCUBA on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope reveal a wide variety of large-scale features that were previously unknown. Two linear features each 4' (0.2 pc) in length extend to the north of the bright emission region containing SM1 and VLA 1623. These features may correspond to the walls of a previously unidentified outflow cavity, or the boundary of a photon dominated region powered by a nearby B star. A previously unidentified source is located in the north-east region of the image. The properties …
We present high angular resolution VLA and BIMA observations of NH$_3$, HCO$^+$, HCN and SO molecular emission and 1.4, 3.5 and 7 mm continuum emission toward the exciting source of the HH~80-81 system. This object is one of the few massive protostars known to be driving a collimated outflow. We report the first detection of SO 5$_5$--4$_4$ molecular emission toward the exciting source of HH 80-81, suggesting that this transition may be a good tracer of molecular gas near massive protostars. We also detected toward this source dust continuum emission at 1.4 and 3.5 mm. From the SO molecular em…
