Dirac operator eigenvalues split into two when subjected to two different external vector sources. In a specific finite-volume scaling regime of gauge theories with fermions, this problem can be mapped to a chiral Random Two-Matrix Theory. We derive analytical expressions to leading order in the associated finite-volume expansion, showing how individual Dirac eigenvalue distributions and their correlations equivalently can be computed directly from the effective chiral Lagrangian in the epsilon-regime. Because of its equivalence to chiral Random Two-Matrix Theory, we use the latter for all explicit computations. On the mathematical side, we define and determine gap probabilities and individual eigenvalue distributions in that theory at finite N, and also derive the relevant scaling limit as N is taken to infinity. In particular, the gap probability for one Dirac eigenvalue is given in terms of a new kernel that depends on the external vector source. This expression may give a new and simple way of determining the pion decay constant F_pi from lattice gauge theory simulations.
We establish the Bethe equation of the $τ^{(2)}$-model in the $N$-state chiral Potts model (including the degenerate selfdual cases) with alternating vertical rapidities. The eigenvalues of a finite-size transfer matrix of the chiral Potts model are computed by use of functional relations. The significance of the "alternating superintegrable" case of the chiral Potts model is discussed, and the degeneracy of $τ^{(2)}$-model found as in the homogeneous superintegrable chiral Potts model.
We study an unconventional chiral random matrix model with a heavy-tailed probabilistic weight. The model is shown to exhibit chiral symmetry breaking with no bilinear condensate, in analogy to the Stern phase of QCD. We solve the model analytically and obtain the microscopic spectral density and the smallest eigenvalue distribution for an arbitrary number of flavors and arbitrary quark masses. Exotic behaviors such as non-decoupling of heavy flavors and a power-law tail of the smallest eigenvalue distribution are illustrated.
We reinvestigate constraints on the eigenvalue density of the Dirac operator in the chiral symmetric phase of 2 flavor QCD at finite temperature, employing the overlap Dirac operator with the exact chiral symmetry at finite lattice spacings to avoid possible ultra-violet(UV) divergences. Studying multi-point correlation functions in various channels in the thermodynamical limit, we obtain stronger constraints than those found in the previous studies that not only the eigenvalue density at the origin but also its first and second derivatives vanish in the chiral limit of 2 flavor QCD. In additi…
We reconsider constraints on the eigenvalue density of the Dirac operator in the chiral symmetric phase of 2 flavor QCD at finite temperature. To avoid possible ultra-violet(UV) divergences, we work on a lattice, employing the overlap Dirac operator, which ensures the exact "chiral" symmetry at finite lattice spacings. Studying multi-point correlation functions in various channels and taking their thermodynamical limit (and then taking the chiral limit), we obtain stronger constraints than those found in the previous studies: both the eigenvalue density at the origin and its first and second d…
We compute individual distributions of low-lying eigenvalues of massive chiral random matrix ensembles by the Nyström-type quadrature method for evaluating the Fredholm determinant and Pfaffian that represent the analytic continuation of the Janossy densities (conditional gap probabilities). A compact formula for individual eigenvalue distributions suited for precise numerical evaluation by the Nyström-type method is obtained in an explicit form, and the $k^{\rm{\small th}}$ smallest eigenvalue distributions are numerically evaluated for chiral unitary and symplectic ensembles in the microscop…
We compute individual distributions of low-lying eigenvalues of a chiral random matrix ensemble interpolating symplectic and unitary symmetry classes by the Nyström-type method of evaluating the Fredholm Pfaffian and resolvents of the quaternion kernel. The one-parameter family of these distributions are shown to fit excellently the Dirac spectra of SU(2) lattice gauge theory with a constant U(1) background or dynamically fluctuating U(1) gauge field, which weakly breaks the pseudo-reality of the unperturbed SU(2) Dirac operator. Observed linear dependence of the crossover parameter with the s…
A numerical method of high precision is used to calculate the energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for a symmetric double-well potential. The method is based on enclosing the system within two infinite walls with a large but finite separation and developing a power series solution for the Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation. The obtained numerical results are compared with those obtained on the basis of the Zinn-Justin conjecture and found to be in an excellent agreement.
We compute statistical distributions of individual low-lying eigenvalues of random matrix ensembles interpolating chiral Gaussian symplectic and unitary ensembles. To this aim we use the Nystrom-type discretization of Fredholm Pfaffians and resolvents of the dynamical Bessel kernel containing a single crossover parameter ρ. The ρ-dependent distributions of the four smallest eigenvalues are then used to fit the Dirac spectra of modulated SU(2) lattice gauge theory, in which the reality of the staggered SU(2) Dirac operator is weakly violated either by the U(1) gauge field or by a constant backg…
We describe in detail the solution of the extension of the chiral Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (chGUE) into the complex plane. The correlation functions of the model are first calculated for a finite number of N complex eigenvalues, where we exploit the existence of orthogonal Laguerre polynomials in the complex plane. When taking the large-N limit we derive new correlation functions in the case of weak and strong non-Hermiticity, thus describing the transition from the chGUE to a generalized Ginibre ensemble. Applications to the Dirac operator eigenvalue spectrum in QCD with non-vanishing chemic…
We utilize the eigenvalue filtering technique combined with the stochastic estimate of the mode number to determine the eigenvalue spectrum. Simulations of (2 + 1)-flavor QCD are performed using the Highly Improved Staggered Quarks (HISQ/tree) action on $N_τ$ = 8 lattices with aspect ratios $N_σ/N_τ$ ranging from 5 to 7. The strange quark mass is fixed to its physical value $m_{s}^{\rm phy}$, and the light quark masses $m_{l}$ are varied from $m_{s}^{\rm phy}/40$ to $m_{s}^{\rm phy}/160$ which correspond to pion mass $m_π$ ranging from 110 MeV to 55 MeV in the continuum limit. We compute the c…
We use the idea of a Wigner surmise to compute approximate distributions of the first eigenvalue in chiral Random Matrix Theory, for both real and complex eigenvalues. Testing against known results for zero and maximal non-Hermiticity in the microscopic large-N limit we find an excellent agreement, valid for a small number of exact zero-eigenvalues. New compact expressions are derived for real eigenvalues in the orthogonal and symplectic classes, and at intermediate non-Hermiticity for the unitary and symplectic classes. Such individual Dirac eigenvalue distributions are a useful tool in Latti…
We solve a family of Gaussian two-matrix models with rectangular Nx(N+v) matrices, having real asymmetric matrix elements and depending on a non-Hermiticity parameter mu. Our model can be thought of as the chiral extension of the real Ginibre ensemble, relevant for Dirac operators in the same symmetry class. It has the property that its eigenvalues are either real, purely imaginary, or come in complex conjugate eigenvalue pairs. The eigenvalue joint probability distribution for our model is explicitly computed, leading to a non-Gaussian distribution including K-Bessel functions. All n-point de…
Close to the continuum the lattice spacing affects the smallest eigenvalues of the Wilson Dirac operator in a very specific manner determined by the way in which the discretization breaks chiral symmetry. These effects can be computed analytically by means of Wilson chiral perturbation theory and Wilson random matrix theory. A number of insights on chiral Dynamics with Wilson fermions can be obtained from the computation of the microscopic spectrum of the Wilson Dirac operator. For example, the unusual volume scaling of the smallest eigenvalues observed in lattice simulations has a natural exp…
We derive a hydrodynamical description of the eigenvalues of the chiral Dirac spectrum in the vacuum and in the large $N$ (volume) limit. The linearized hydrodynamics supports sound waves. The stochastic relaxation of the eigenvalues is captured by a hydrodynamical instanton configuration which follows from a pertinent form of Euler equation. The relaxation from a phase of localized eigenvalues and unbroken chiral symmetry to a phase of de-localized eigenvalues and broken chiral symmetry occurs over a time set by the speed of sound. We show that the time is $Δτ=πρ(0)/2βN$ with $ρ(0)$ the spect…
We investigate the Dirac eigenvalue spectrum ($ρ(λ,m_l)$) to study the microscopic origin of axial anomaly in high temperature phase of QCD. We propose novel relations between the derivatives ($\partial^n ρ(λ,m_l)/\partial m_l^n$) of the Dirac eigenvalue spectrum with respect to the quark mass ($m_l$) and the $(n+1)$-point correlations among the eigenvalues ($λ$) of the massless Dirac operator. Based on these relations, we present lattice QCD results for $\partial^n ρ(λ,m_l)/\partial m_l^n$ ($n=1, 2, 3$) with $m_l$ corresponding to pion masses $m_π=160-55$ MeV, and at a temperature of about 1.…
We introduce novel relations between the derivatives [$\partial^{n}ρ(λ, m_{l})/\partial m_{l}^n$] of the Dirac eigenvalue spectrum [$ρ(λ, m_{l})$] with respect to the light sea quark mass ($m_{l}$) and the $(n+1)$-point correlations among the eigenvalues ($λ$) of the massless Dirac operator. Using these relations we present lattice QCD results for $\partial^{n}ρ(λ, m_{l})/\partial m_{l}^n$ ($n=1, 2, 3$) for $m_{l}$ corresponding to pion masses $m_π=160-55$ MeV, and at a temperature of about 1.6 times the chiral phase transition temperature. Calculations were carried out using (2+1) flavors of …
We construct a model to study the impact of instantons on the low lying eigenvalue spectrum of the Dirac operator. The model is by necessity, approximate, though it does incorporate the important symmetries of the underlying field theory. The model also reproduces classical results in the appropriate limits. We find that generic instanton ensembles lead to an accumulation of eigenvalues around zero, and hence, break chiral symmetry. The eigenvalue spectrum is divergent however, as the eigenvalue approaches zero. This leads to a divergent chiral condensate in quenched QCD, and hence, shows the …
The relation between the spectral density of the QCD Dirac operator at nonzero baryon chemical potential and the chiral condensate is investigated. We use the analytical result for the eigenvalue density in the microscopic regime which shows oscillations with a period that scales as 1/V and an amplitude that diverges exponentially with the volume $V=L^4$. We find that the discontinuity of the chiral condensate is due to the whole oscillating region rather than to an accumulation of eigenvalues at the origin. These results also extend beyond the microscopic regime to chemical potentials $μ\sim …

To understand the relation between the chiral symmetry breaking and monopoles, the chiral condensate which is the order parameter of the chiral symmetry breaking is calculated in the $\overline{\mbox{MS}}$ scheme at 2 [GeV]. First, we add one pair of monopoles, varying the monopole charges $m_{c}$ from zero to four, to SU(3) quenched configurations by a monopole creation operator. The low-lying eigenvalues of the Overlap Dirac operator are computed from the gauge links of the normal configurations and the configurations with additional monopoles. Next, we compare the distributions of the neare…
The zero momentum sectors in effective theories of QCD coupled to pseudoreal (two colors) and real (adjoint) quarks have alternative descriptions in terms of chiral orthogonal and symplectic ensembles of random matrices. Using this correspondence, we compute correlation functions of Dirac operator eigenvalues within a sector with an arbitrary topological charge in a presence of finite quark masses of the order of the smallest Dirac eigenvalue. These novel correlation functions, expressed in terms of Pfaffians, interpolate between known results for the chiral and quenched limits as quark masses…
In the solution of the superintegrable chiral Potts model special polynomials related to the representation theory of the Onsager algebra play a central role. We derive approximate analytic formulae for the zeros of particular polynomials which determine sets of low-lying energy eigenvalues of the chiral Potts quantum chain. These formulae allow the analytic calculation of the leading finite-size corrections to the energy eigenvalues without resorting to a numerical determination of the zeros.
In a deep-infrared (ergodic) regime, QCD coupled to massive pseudoreal and real quarks are described by chiral orthogonal and symplectic ensembles of random matrices. Using this correspondence, general expressions for the QCD partition functions are derived in terms of microscopically rescaled mass variables. In limited cases, correlation functions of Dirac eigenvalues and distributions of the smallest Dirac eigenvalue are given as ratios of these partition functions. When all masses are degenerate, our results reproduce the known expressions for the partition functions of zero-dimensional sig…
In the planar limit, in the deconfined phase, the Euclidean Dirac operator has a spectral gap around zero. We show that functions of eigenvalues close to the spectral edge, which are independent of common rescalings and shifts gauge configuration by gauge configuration, have distributions described by a Gaussian Hermitian matrix model. However, combinations of eigenvalues that are scale and shift invariant only on the average, do not match this matrix model.
We summarise recent results for the chiral Random Two-Matrix Theory constructed to describe QCD in the epsilon-regime with imaginary chemical potential. The virtue of this theory is that unquenched Lattice simulations can be used to determine both low energy constants Sigma and F in the leading order chiral Lagrangian, due to their respective coupling to quark mass and chemical potential. We briefly recall the analytic formulas for all density and individual eigenvalue correlations and then illustrate them in detail in the simplest, quenched case with imaginary isospin chemical potential. Some…
We re-analyze data from available finite-temperature QCD simulations near the chiral transition, with the help of Chiral Random Matrix Theory (chRMT). Statistical properties of the lowest-lying eigenvalues of the staggered Dirac operator for SU(3) lattice gauge theory with dynamical fermions are examined. We consider temperatures below, near, and above the critical temperature $T_c$ for the chiral phase transition. Below and above $T_c$ the statistics are in agreement with the exact analytical predictions in the microscopic scaling regime. Above $T_c$ we observe a gap in the spectral density a…
We investigate the eigenvalue spectrum of the staggered Dirac matrix in SU(3) gauge theory and in full QCD as well as in quenched U(1) theory. As a measure of the fluctuation properties of the eigenvalues, we consider the nearest-neighbor spacing distribution. We find that in all regions of their phase diagrams, compact lattice gauge theories have bulk spectral correlations given by random matrix theory, which is an indication for quantum chaos. In the confinement phase, the low-lying Dirac spectrum of these quantum field theories is well described by random matrix theory, exhibiting universal…
Next to leading order corrections to the $SU(3) \times SU(3)$ Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation (GMOR) are obtained using weighted QCD Finite Energy Sum Rules (FESR) involving the pseudoscalar current correlator. Two types of integration kernels in the FESR are used to suppress the contribution of the kaon radial excitations to the hadronic spectral function, one with local and the other with global constraints. The result for the pseudoscalar current correlator at zero momentum is $ψ_5(0) = (2.8 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{-3} GeV^{4}$, leading to the chiral corrections to GMOR: $δ_K = (55 \pm 5)%$. Th…
We link the spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry in Euclidean QCD to the collision of spectral shock waves in the vicinity of zero eigenvalue of Dirac operator. The mechanism, originating from complex Burger's-like equation for viscid, pressureless, one-dimensional flow of eigenvalues, is similar to recently observed weak-strong coupling phase transition in large $N_c$ Yang-Mills theory. The spectral viscosity is proportional to the inverse of the size of the random matrix that replaces the Dirac operator in the universal (ergodic) regime. We obtain the exact scaling function and critical …
We study chiral properties of eigenvalue spectrum for staggered quarks. We present a new method to identify would-be zero modes and nonzero modes using their symmetry and chiral properties. Here, we review the traditional method with HYP improved staggered quarks, and extend it to a completely new method which uses the chiral Ward identities and leakage patterns to achieve the goal.
We give further support for our conjecture relating eigenvalue distributions of the Kapustin-Willett-Yaakov matrix model in the large N limit to numbers of operators in the chiral ring of the corresponding supersymmetric three-dimensional gauge theory. We show that the relation holds for non-critical R-charges and for examples with {\mathcal N}=2 instead of {\mathcal N}=3 supersymmetry where the bifundamental matter fields are nonchiral. We prove that, for non-critical R-charges, the conjecture is equivalent to a relation between the free energy of the gauge theory on a three sphere and the vo…
It is shown that when the mass matrix changes in orientation (rotates) in generation space for changing energy scale, then the masses of the lower generations are not given just by its eigenvalues. In particular, these masses need not be zero even when the eigenvalues are zero. In that case, the strong CP problem can be avoided by removing the unwanted $θ$ term by a chiral transformation in no contradiction with the nonvanishing quark masses experimentally observed. Similarly, a rotating mass matrix may shed new light on the problem of chiral symmetry breaking. That the fermion mass matrix may…
