Let $y=f(x)$ be a continuously differentiable implicit function solving the equation $F(x,y)=0$ with continuously differentiable $F.$ In this paper we show that if $F_\eps$ is a Lipschitz function such that the Lipschitz constant of $F_\eps-F$ goes to 0 as $\eps\to 0$ then the equation $F_\eps(x,y)=0$ has a Lipschitz solution $y=f_\eps(x)$ such that the Lipschitz constant of $f_\eps-f$ goes to 0 as $\eps\to 0$ either. As an application we evaluate the length of time intervals where the right hand parts of some nonautonomous discontinuous systems of ODEs are continuously differentiable with respect to state variables. The latter is done as a preparatory step toward generalizing the second Bogolyubov's theorem for discontinuous systems.
We discuss removability problems concerning differentiability and pointwise Lipschitz conditions for functions of a real variable. We prove that, in each of the settings under consideration, a set is removable if and only if it has no perfect subsets.
We prove that for every function $f:X\to Y$, where $X$ is a separable Banach space and $Y$ is a Banach space with RNP, there exists a set $A\in\tilde\mcA$ such that $f$ is Gateaux differentiable at all $x\in S(f)\setminus A$, where $S(f)$ is the set of points where $f$ is pointwise-Lipschitz. This improves a result of Bongiorno. As a corollary, we obtain that every $K$-monotone function on a separable Banach space is Hadamard differentiable outside of a set belonging to $\tilde\mcC$; this improves a result due to Borwein and Wang. Another corollary is that if $X$ is Asplund, $f:X\to\R$ cone mo…
The main result: for every sequence $\{ω_m\}_{m=1}^\infty$ of positive numbers ($ω_m>0)$ there exists an isometric embedding $F:[0,1]\to L_1[0,1]$ which is nowhere differentiable, but for each $t\in [0,1]$ the image $F_t$ is infinitely differentiable on $[0,1]$ with bounds $\max_{x\in[0,1]}|F_t^{(m)}(x)|\leω_m$ and has an analytic extension to the complex plane which is an entire function.
A well-known open question is whether every countable collection of Lipschitz functions on a Banach space X with separable dual has a common point of Frechet differentiability. We show that the answer is positive for some infinite-dimensional X. Previously, even for collections consisting of two functions this has been known for finite-dimensional X only (although for one function the answer is known to be affirmative in full generality). Our aims are achieved by introducing a new class of null sets in Banach spaces (called $Γ$-null sets), whose definition involves both the notions of category…
In this paper, using the tools from the lineability theory, we distinguish certain subsets of $p$-adic differentiable functions. Specifically, we show that the following sets of functions are large enough to contain an infinite dimensional algebraic structure: (i) continuously differentiable but not strictly differentiable functions, (ii) strictly differentiable functions of order $r$ but not strictly differentiable of order $r+1$, (iii) strictly differentiable functions with zero derivative that are not Lipschitzian of any order $α>1$, (iv) differentiable functions with unbounded derivative, …
A wavelet basis is a basis for the $K$-Banach space $C(R, K)$ of continuous functions from a complete discrete valuation ring $R$ whose residue field is finite to its quotient field $K$. In this paper, we prove a characterization of $n$-times continuously differentiable functions from $R$ to $K$ by the coefficients with respect to the wavelet basis and give an orthonormal basis for $K$-Banach space $C^n(R, K)$ of $n$-times continuously differentiable functions.
The convex cone $SC_{\mathrm{SLip}}^1(\mathcal{X})$ of real-valued smooth semi-Lipschitz functions on a Finsler manifold $\mathcal{X}$ is an order-algebraic structure that captures both the differentiable and the quasi-metric feature of $\mathcal{X}$. In this work we show that the subset of smooth semi-Lipschitz functions of constant strictly less than $1$, denoted $SC_{1^{-}}^1(\mathcal{X})$, can be used to classify Finsler manifolds and to characterize almost isometries between them, in the lines of the classical Banach-Stone and Mykers-Nakai theorems.
We provide sufficient conditions for a set $E\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ to be a non-universal differentiability set, i.e. to be contained in the set of points of non-differentiability of a real-valued Lipschitz function. These conditions are motivated by a description of the ideal generated by sets of non-differentiability of Lipschitz self-maps of $\mathbb{R}^n$ given by Alberti, Csörnyei and Preiss, which eventually led to the result of Jones and Csörnyei that for every Lebesgue null set $E$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ there is a Lipschitz map $f:\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}^n$ not differentiable at any point …
We establish the following converse of the well-known inverse function theorem. Let $g:U\to V$ and $f:V\to U$ be inverse homeomorphisms between open subsets of Banach spaces. If $g$ is differentiable of class $C^p$ and $f$ if locally Lipschitz, then the Fréchet derivative of $g$ at each point of $U$ is invertible and $f$ must be differentiable of class $C^p$.
We prove that in a Euclidean space of dimension at least two, there exists a compact set of Lebesgue measure zero such that any real-valued Lipschitz function defined on the space is differentiable at some point in the set. Such a set is constructed explicitly.
We show that if $X$ is a Banach space whose dual $X^{*}$ has an equivalent locally uniformly rotund (LUR) norm, then for every open convex $U\subseteq X$, for every $\varepsilon >0$, and for every continuous and convex function $f:U \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ (not necessarily bounded on bounded sets) there exists a convex function $g:X \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ of class $C^1(U)$ such that $f-\varepsilon\leq g\leq f$ on $U.$ We also show how the problem of global approximation of continuous (not necessarily bounded on bounded sets) and convex functions by $C^k$ smooth convex functions can be reduced…
We prove an implicit function theorem for C^k-maps from arbitrary topological vector spaces over valued fields to Banach spaces (for k at least 2). As a tool, we show the C^k-dependence of fixed points on parameters for suitable families of contractions of a Banach space. Similar results are obtained for k times strictly differentiable maps, and for k times Lipschitz differentiable maps. In the real case, our results subsume an implicit function theorem for Keller C^k_c-maps from arbitrary topological vector spaces to Banach spaces.
The purpose of this survey article is a comprehensive study of operator Lipschitz functions. A continuous function $f$ on the real line ${\Bbb R}$ is called operator Lipschitz if $\|f(A)-f(B)\|\le{\rm const}\|A-B\|$ for arbitrary self-adjoint operators $A$ and $B$. We give sufficient conditions and necessary conditions for operator Lipschitzness. We also study the class of operator differentiable functions on ${\Bbb R}$. Then we consider operator Lipschitz functions on closed subsets of the plane as well as commutator Lipschitz functions on such subsets. Am important role is played by double o…
Rademacher theorem states that every Lipschitz function on the Euclidean space is differentiable almost everywhere, where "almost everywhere" refers to the Lebesgue measure. In this paper we prove a differentiability result of similar type, where the Lebesgue measure is replaced by an arbitrary measure $μ$. In particular we show that the differentiability properties of Lipschitz functions at $μ$-almost every point are related to the decompositions of $μ$ in terms of rectifiable one-dimensional measures. As a consequence we obtain a differentiability result for Lipschitz functions with respect …
The purpose of this survey is a comprehensive study of operator Lip\-schitz functions. A continuous function $f$ on the real line ${\Bbb R}$ os called operator Lipschitz if $\|f(A)-f(B)\|\le\operatorname{const}\|A-B\|$ for arbitrary self-adjoint operators $A$ and $B$. We give sufficient conditions and necessary conditions for operator Lipschitzness. We also study the class of operator differentiable functions on ${\Bbb R}$ . Next, we consider operator Lipschitz functions on closed subsets of the plane and introduce the class of commutator Lipschitz functions on such subsets. An important role …
Given an open subset $Ω$ of a Banach space and a Lipschitz function $u_0: \overlineΩ \to \mathbb{R},$ we study whether it is possible to approximate $u_0$ uniformly on $Ω$ by $C^k$-smooth Lipschitz functions which coincide with $u_0$ on the boundary $\partial Ω$ of $Ω$ and have the same Lipschitz constant as $u_0.$ As a consequence, we show that every $1$-Lipschitz function $u_0: \overlineΩ \to \mathbb{R},$ defined on the closure $\overlineΩ$ of an open subset $Ω$ of a finite dimensional normed space of dimension $n \geq 2$, and such that the Lipschitz constant of the restriction of $u_0$ to t…
We prove a generalized implicit function theorem for Banach spaces, without the usual assumption that the subspaces involved being complemented. Then we apply it to the problem of parametrization of fibers of differentiable maps, the Lie subgroup problem for Banach-Lie groups, as well as Weil's local rigidity for homomorphisms from finitely generated groups to Banach-Lie groups.
We investigate the connection between maximal directional derivatives and differentiability for Lipschitz functions defined on Laakso space. We show that maximality of a directional derivative for a Lipschitz function implies differentiability only for a $σ$-porous set of points. On the other hand, the distance to a fixed point is differentiable everywhere except for a $σ$-porous set of points. This behavior is completely different to the previously studied settings of Euclidean spaces and Carnot groups.
