The influence of correlation effects on the orbital moments for transition metals and their alloys is studied by first-principle relativistic Density Functional Theory in combination with the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. In contrast to the previous studies based on the orbital polarization corrections we obtain an improved description of the orbital moments for wide range of studied systems as bulk Fe, Co and Ni, Fe-Co disordered alloys and 3$d$ impurities in Au. The proposed scheme can give simultaneously a correct dynamical description of the spectral function as well as static magnetic properties of correlated disordered metals.
The orbital and spin moment of the Ni2+ ion in NiO has been calculated within the quasi-atomic approach. The orbital moment of 0.46 mu_B amounts at 0 K, in the magnetically-ordered state, to about 20% of the total moment (2.45 mu_B). For this outcome, being in nice agreement with the recent experimental finding of the orbital moment, taking into account the intra-atomic spin-orbit coupling is indispensable. We have developed the crystal-field approach with strong electron correlations, extended to the Quantum Atomistic Solid-State theory (QUASST), as a physically relevant theoretical model for the description of electronic and magnetic properties of 3d-atom compounds. Its applicability has been illustrated for LaCoO3, FeBr2 and Na2V3O7. According to the QUASST theory in compounds containing open 3d-/4f-/5f-shell atoms the discrete atomic-like low-energy electronic structure survives also when the 3d atom becomes the full part of a solid matter. This low-energy atomic-like electronic structure, be…
Inter-band effects of magnetic field on orbital magnetic susceptibility and Hall effect in weak magnetic field have been studied theoretically at absolute zero for the model of massless Fermions in two dimension described by Weyl equation similar to graphenes, which are simplified version of newly found one in molecular solids, arfa-ET2I3 described by "tilted Weyl" equation. The dependences on the Fermi energy of both orbital susceptibility and Hall conductivity near the zero-gap region scale with elastic scattering time and then are very singular.
We point out that the orbital magnetism has to be taken into account in the description of real 3d-ion compounds. According to the developed by us the Quantum-Atomistic Solid-State (QUASST) theory in compounds containing open 3d-/4f-/5f-shell atoms there exists a discrete atomic-like low-energy electronic structure that predominantly determines electronic and magnetic properties of the whole compound. The relatively weak intra-atomic spin-orbit coupling is fundamentally important as it governs the low-energy discrete electronic structure.
The combination of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations can induce unusual phenomena in the metallic interface between SrTiO$_3$ and LaAlO$_3$. We consider effects of Rashba spin-orbit coupling at this interface in the context of the recent observation of anisotropic magnetism. Firstly, we show how Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a system near a band-edge can account for the observed magnetic anisotropy. Secondly, we investigate the coupling between in-plane magnetic-moment anisotropy and nematicity in the form of an orbital imbalance between d$_{xz}$ / d$_{yz}$ orbitals. We esti…
The magnetic and electronic properties of Ba$_4$Ru$_3$O$_{10}$ were investigated by the ab-initio and model calculations. It is shown that nonmagnetic ground state of the one-third Ru$^{4+}$ ions is not due to the correlation effects. It is rather caused by the charge disproportionation between crystallographically different Ru and the molecular orbital formation in the Ru's trimer.
Orbital magnetization is known empirically to play an important role in several magnetic phenomena, such as permanent magnetism and ferromagnetic superconductivity. Within the recently developed ''modern theory of orbital magnetization'', theoretical insight has been gained into the nature of this often neglected contribution to magnetism, but is based on an underlying mean-field approximation. From this theory, a few treatments have emerged which also take into account correlations beyond the mean-field approximation. Here, we apply the scheme developed in a previous work [Phys. Rev. B ${\bf …
Essentially all undoped cuprates exhibit a quasi-planar, fourfold Cu-O coordination responsible for the magnetically active antibonding 3d-(x^2-y^2)-like state. Here, we present an electronic structure study for CuSb2O6 that reveals, in contrast, a half-filled 3d-(3z^2-r^2) orbital. This hitherto unobserved ground state originates from a competition of in- and out-of-plaquette orbitals where the strong Coulomb repulsion drives the surprising and unique orbital ordering. This, in turn, gives rise to an unexpected quasi one-dimensional magnetic behavior. Our results provide a consistent explanat…
The local magnetism induced by vacancies in the presence of the spin-orbital interaction is investigated based on the half-filled Kane-Mele-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. Using the self-consistent mean-field theory, we find that the spin-orbital coupling will enhance the localization of the spin moments near a single vacancy. We further study the magnetic structures along the zigzag edges formed by a chain of vacancies. We find that the spin-orbital coupling tends to suppress the counter-polarized ferrimagnetic order on the upper and lower edges, because of the open of the spin-orbita…
For the past decades, the low-temperature phase of Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ below the 48K first-order phase transition remains a puzzle with controversial suggestions involving metallic ferroelectric, orbital or magnetic ordering. Through analysis of experimental lattice structure, density functional theory calculation, and effective model analysis, we propose that the 48K phase transition is a bond formation transition promoted by the magnetism mediated orbital re-polarization. Most interestingly, this transition is accompanied by a switch of \textit{two} metallic ferroelectric orders from a $xy+y$ …
Excitonic magnetism involving superpositions of singlet and triplet states is expected to arise for two holes in strongly correlated and spin-orbit coupled $t_{2g}$ orbitals. However, uncontested material examples for its realization are rare. Applying the Variational Cluster Approach to the square lattice, we find conventional spin antiferromagnetism combined with orbital order at weak and excitonic order at strong spin-orbit coupling. We address the specific example of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ using ab-initio modeling and conclude it to realize excitonic magnetism despite its pronounced orbital polariz…
We have used a combination of resonant magnetic x-ray scattering (RMXS) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to investigate the properties of the doped spin-orbital Mott insulator Sr2Ir(1-x)Rh(x)O4 (0.07 < x < 0.70). We show that Sr2Ir(1-x)Rh(x)O4 represents a unique model system for the study of dilute magnetism in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, and provide evidence of a doping-induced change in magnetic structure and a suppression of magnetic order at x_c ~ 0.17. We demonstrate that Rh-doping introduces Rh3+/Ir5+ ions which effectively hole-dope this material. We propose that…
Magnons, as the most elementary excitations of magnetic materials, have recently emerged as a prominent tool in electrical and thermal manipulation and transport of spin, and magnonics as a field is considered as one of the pillars of modern spintronics. On the other hand, orbitronics, which exploits the orbital degree of freedom of electrons rather than their spin, emerges as a powerful platform in efficient design of currents and redistribution of angular momentum in structurally complex materials. Here, we uncover a way to bridge the worlds of magnonics and electronic orbital magnetism, whi…
Single-site dynamical mean field theory is used to determine the magnetic and orbital-ordering phase diagram for a model of electrons moving on a lattice with three orbital states per site and with the fully rotationally invariant Slater-Kanamori on-site interactions. The model captures important aspects of the physics of transition metal oxides with partially filled $t_{2g}$ shells, and of electron-doped C$_{60}$. We introduce an unbiased, computationally simple and inexpensive method for estimating the presence of two sublattice order, determine the regimes in which spatially uniform and two…
We present an ab initio quantum theory of the finite temperature magnetism of iron and nickel. A recently developed technique which combines dynamical mean-field theory with realistic electronic structure methods, successfully describes the many-body features of the one electron spectra and the observed magnetic moments below and above the Curie temperature.
Strongly interacting phonons and orbital excitations are observed in the same energy range for CuSb$_2$O$_6$, unlocking a so-far unexplored type of electron-phonon interaction. An orbital wave at $\sim 550$ cm$^{-1}$ softens on warming and strongly interferes with a phonon at $\sim 500$ cm$^{-1}$, giving rise to a merged excitation of mixed character. An electronic continuum grows on warming to the orbital ordering temperature $T_{OO}$=400 K, generating an important phonon decay channel. This direct and simultaneous observation of orbital and vibrational excitations reveals details of their co…
Recent scanning tunneling microscopy in the superconducting regime of two different cuprate families has revealed unidirectional bond-centered modulation in the local electronic density of states. Motivated by this result we investigate the emergence of modulated d-wave superconductivity coexisting with charge domains that form along one of the crystal axes. While detailed stripe profiles depend on the used form of the Gutzwiller factors, the tendency towards a valence bond crystal remain robust. We also find closely related stripe phase originating from the staggered flux phase, a candidate f…
We derive the effective heat current density operator for the strong-coupling regime of Mott insulators. Similarly to the case of the electric current density, the leading contribution to this effective operator is proportional to the local scalar spin chirality $\hatχ_{jkl}= \mathbf{S}_l\cdot\left(\mathbf{S}_j\times \mathbf{S}_k\right)$. This common form of the effective heat and electric current density operators leads to a novel cross response in Mott insulators. A heat current induces a distribution of orbital magnetic moments in systems containing loops of an odd number of hopping terms. …
We investigate the evolution of magnetic properties as a function of hydrogen doping in iron based superconductor LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ using the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the density-functional theory. We find that two independent consequences of the doping, the increase of the electron occupation and the structural modification, have the opposite effects on the strength of electron correlation and magnetism, resulting in the minimum of the calculated magnetic moment around the intermediate doping level as a function of $x$. Our result provides a natural explanation for the puz…
The strain tuned magnetism of YTiO$_3$ film grown on the LaAlO$_3$ ($110$) substrate is studied by the method of the first principles, and compared with that of the ($001$)-oriented one. The obtained magnetism is totally different, which is ferromagnetic for the film on the ($110$) substrate but A-type antiferromagnetic on the ($001$) one. This orientation-dependent magnetism is attributed to the subtle orbital ordering of YTiO$_3$ film. The $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$-type orbital ordering is predominant for the ($001$) one, but for the ($110$) case, the $d_{xy}$ orbital is mostly occupied plus a few c…
The orbital effect on the anomalous magnetism and evolution of low La-doping single crystals, La$_x$Y$_{1-x}$VO$_{3}$ (x = 0, 0.1, and 0.2), has been investigated by applying the X-ray diffraction, specific heat, magnetization and Raman scattering techniques. The larger nearest-neighbor (NN) exchange interaction along c-axis stabilizes the fluctuant G-type orbital ordering (G-OO) which favors the exotic C-type antiferromagnetic order (C-AF). It is found that the NN exchange interaction in ab plane is anisotropy relating to the in plane magnetic anisotropy, which becomes smaller in high La-dope…
Single-crystal sample of chromium doped with ca.0.2 at.%119Sn was studied by means of a transmission Mössbauer spectroscopy in the temperature range of 310-315 K. An anomaly in the temperature behavior of the center shift was found at ca. 313 K, a temperature that coincides well with the Néel temperature of chromium. The anomaly gives evidence that the vibrations of atoms in the studied system are affected by the magnetism.

The origin of non-collinear magnetism under quadrupolar ordering is investigated with CeB6 taken as a target system. The mode-mixing effect among 15 multipoles is analyzed based on the Ginzburg-Landau free energy. Then the lower magnetic transition temperature and the order parameters are derived within the mean-field approximation. In the presence of pseudo-dipole-type interactions for the next-nearest neighbors, the observed pattern of non-collinear ordering is indeed stabilized for certain set of interaction parameters. The stability of the phase III' in the magnetic field is also explained…
We discuss the orbital magnetism and the Hall effect in the weak magnetic field in two dimensional Dirac fermion systems with energy gap. This model is related to the graphene sheet, organic conductors, and $d$-density wave superconductors. We found the strong diamagnetism and finite Hall conductivity even in gapped systems. We also discuss the relation between the weak-magnetic field formalism and the Landau quantization with the Euler-Maclaurin expansion.
With octahedrally coordinated $t_{\rm 2g}$ orbitals which are active at filling $n=2$, the $\rm Sr_2CrO_4$ compound exhibits rich interplay of spin-orbital physics with tetragonal distortion induced crystal field tuning by external agent such as pressure. Considering both reversed and restored crystal field regimes, collective spin-orbital excitations are investigated in the antiferromagnetic state using the generalized self consistent + fluctuations approach including spin-orbit coupling (SOC). A transition is found from staggered to entangled orbital order at critical SOC value in the realis…
We present here the first-principles dynamical CPA (coherent potential approximation) combined with the tight-binding LMTO LDA+U method towards quantitative calculations of the electronic structure and magnetism at finite temperatures in transition metals and compounds. The theory takes into account the single-site dynamical charge and spin fluctuations using the functional integral technique as well as an effective medium. Numerical results for Fe, Co, and Ni show that the theory explains quantitatively the high-temperature properties such as the effective Bohr magneton numbers and the excita…
Motivated by the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on FeSe and iron pnictide families of iron-based superconductors, we have studied the orbital nematic order and its interplay with antiferromagnetism within the two-orbital Hubbard model. We used random phase approximation (RPA) to calculate the dependence of the orbital and magnetic susceptibilities on the strength of interactions and electron density (doping). To account for strong electron correlations not captured by RPA, we further employed non-perturbative variational cluster approximation (VCA) capable of capturin…
Edge magnetism in zigzag transition metal dichalcogenide nanoribbons is studied using a three-band tight-binding model with local electron-electron interactions. Both mean field theory and the unbiased, numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo method are applied. Depending on the edge filling, mean field theory predicts different phases: gapped spin dimer and antiferromagnetic phases appear for two specific fillings, with a tendency towards metallic edge-ferromagnetism away from those fillings. Determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations confirm the stability of the antiferromagnetic …
The electronic and magnetic properties of Ba$_5$AlIr$_2$O$_{11}$ containing Ir-Ir dimers are investigated using the GGA and GGA+SOC calculations. We found that strong suppression of the magnetic moment in this compound recently found in [J. Terzic {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 91}, 235147 (2015)] is not due to charge-ordering, but is related to the joint effect of the spin-orbit interaction and strong covalency, resulting in the formation of metal-metal bonds. They conspire and act against the intra-atomic Hund's rule exchange interaction to reduce total magnetic moment of the dimer. We argu…
We report tests of various density functionals for ferromagnetic, Fe, Co and Ni with a focus on characterizing the behavior of the so-called strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) functional. It is found that SCAN is closer in behavior to functionals that yield localized behavior, such as hybrid functionals, than other semilocal functionals that are tested. The results are understood in terms of a tendency to differentiate orbitals, favoring integer occupation, which is necessary for a correct description of atomic systems, but inappropriate for the open shell metallic ferromagne…
Based on density functional calculations, we report on the orbital order and microscopic magnetic model of FeNCN, a prototype compound for orbital-only models. Despite having a similar energy scale, the spin and orbital degrees of freedom in FeNCN are only weakly coupled. The ground-state configuration features the doubly occupied d_{3z^2-r^2} (a1g) orbital and four singly-occupied d orbitals resulting in the spin S=2 on the Fe+2 atoms, whereas alternative (Eg') configurations are about 75 meV/f.u. higher in energy. Calculated exchange couplings and band gap are in good agreement with the avai…
We discuss the thermodynamic and magnetic properties of a competing high-spin/low-spin two-orbital two-electron model on a square-lattice possibly relevant to the nickelates such as Ba$_2$NiO$_2$(AgSe)$_2$ (BNOAS). We focus on parameter regimes where a high-spin ($S=1$) and a low-spin ($S=0$) state are energetically close to each other and discuss various exchange processes in such a system. The model we study is a variant of, but different from the Kondo-necklace model proposed for the system by Jin et al (H. S. Jin, W. E. Pickett and K. W. Lee, Phys. Rev. Research 2, 033197 (2020)). Although…
FeCrAs displays an unusual electrical response that is neither metallic in character nor divergent at low temperatures, as expected for an insulating response, and therefore it has been termed a "nonmetal-metal". We carried out neutron scattering experiments on powder and single crystal samples to study the magnetic dynamics and critical fluctuations in FeCrAs. Magnetic neutron diffraction measurements find Cr3+ magnetic order setting in at 115 K with the mean-field critical exponent. Neutron spectroscopy, however, observes gapless stiff magnetic fluctuations emanating from magnetic positions …
Quantum magnets with spin $J=2$, which arise in spin-orbit coupled Mott insulators, can potentially display multipolar orders. We carry out an exact diagonalization study of a simple octahedral crystal field Hamiltonian for two electrons, incorporating spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and interactions, finding that either explicitly including the $e_g$ orbitals, or going beyond the rotationally invariant Coulomb interaction within the $t_{2g}$ sector, causes a degeneracy breaking of the $J\!=\!2$ level degeneracy. This can lead to a low-lying non-Kramers doublet carrying quadrupolar and octupolar mom…
We employ a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory to investigate the electronic structure of the recently synthesized insulator BaCrO$_3$. Our calculations show that Hund's coupling is responsible for strong correlation effects, which are however not sufficient to turn the system insulating. A finite Jahn-Teller distortion lifting the orbital degeneracy is necessary to stabilize an insulating state with orbital ordering and consequent magnetic ordering.
RV6Sn6 (R=rare earth) compounds are appealing materials platforms for exploring the interplay between R-site magnetism and nontrivial band topology associated with the nonmagnetic vanadium-based kagome network. Here we present the synthesis and characterization of the kagome metal TbV6Sn6 via single-crystal x-ray diffraction, magnetization, transport, and heat capacity measurements. Magnetization measurements reveal strong, uniaxial magnetic anisotropy rooted in the alignment of Tb3Å moments in the interplane direction below 4.3(2) K. TbV6Sn6 exhibits multiband transport behavior with high mob…
The pseudogap phase of the cuprate superconductors is argued to be characterized by a hidden broken symmetry of d-wave character in the particle-hole channel that leads to staggered orbital magnetism. This proposal has many striking phenomenological consequences, but the most direct signature of this order should be visible in the neutron scattering experiments. The theoretical underpinning of these experiments is discussed.
We performed spin-polarized density functional calculations of lanthanide-series (Ln) iron oxypnictides LnFeAsO (Ln=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Gd) with constrained Fe magnetic moments, finding that in-plane dxy and out-of-plane dyz orbital characters are preferred for small Fe magnetic moments. Comparison of LnFeAsO compounds shows that the antiferromagnetism (AFM) from the Fe dxy orbital is itinerantly driven by orbital-dependent Fermi-surface nesting while AFM from the Fe dyz orbital is driven by superexchange mechanism. The Fe magnetic moments of the two orbital characters show different coupl…
Based on first-principles calculations, the evolution of the electronic and magnetic properties of transition metal dihalides MX$_2$ (M= V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni; X = Cl, Br, I) is analyzed from the bulk to the monolayer limit. A variety of magnetic ground states is obtained as a result of the competition between direct exchange and superexchange. The results predict that FeX$_2$, NiX$_2$, CoCl$_2$ and CoBr$_2$ monolayers are ferromagnetic insulators with sizable magnetocrystalline anisotropies. This makes them ideal candidates for robust ferromagnetism at the single layer level. Our results also hig…
To understand the rich electronic phase diagram in FeSe under pressure that vividly demonstrates the strong interplay between the nematicity, magnetism and superconductivity, we analyze the electronic states by including the higher-order many-body effects called the vertex correction (VC). We predict the pressure-induced emergence of xy-orbital hole-pocket based on the first-principles analysis. Due to this pressure-induced Lifshitz transition, the spin fluctuations on the xy orbital are enhanced, whereas those on xz,yz orbitals are gradually reduced. For this reason, nonmagnetic orbital order…
Orbital susceptibility for Bloch electrons is calculated for the first time up to the first order with respect to overlap integrals between the neighboring atomic orbitals, assuming single-band models. A general and rigorous theory of orbital susceptibility developed in the preceding paper is applied to single-band models in two-dimensional square and triangular lattices. In addition to the Landau-Peierls orbital susceptibility, it is found that there are comparable contributions from the Fermi surface and from the occupied states in the partially filled band called intraband atomic diamagneti…
Recently synthesised Ba4NbMn3O12 belong to cluster magnets - systems with tightly bound groups of magnetism ions, in this case Mn3 trimers. Often such magnetic clusters can be described by molecular orbitals (MO), however strong electron correlations may invalidate this description. To understand the electronic and magnetic state of Ba4NbMn3O12 we carried out ab initio calculations and show that this system is better described not in MO picture, but as a system with electrons localized on the Mn ions, with strong intra-cluster and weaker inter-cluster exchange. The calculated spin of the Mn3 t…
The weak antiferromagnetism of URu${}_{2}$Si${}_{2}$ is discussed on the basis of a duality model which takes into account salient features of both itinerant fermions and "localized" component of spin degrees of freedom. The problem is analyzed in the framework of induced-moment mechanism by taking a singlet-singlet crystal field scheme together with the nesting property of partial Fermi surface of itinerant fermions . It is shown that the extremely small ordered moment $m$ of ${\cal O}$($10^{-2}$$\times$$μ_{B}$) can be compatible with the large specific-heat jump at the transition temperature…
The one-dimensional cobaltate Ca3Co2O6 is an intriguing material having an unconventional magnetic structure, displaying quantum tunneling phenomena in its magnetization. Using a newly developed experimental method, s-core-level non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (s-NIXS), we were able to image the atomic Co 3d orbital that is responsible for the Ising magnetism in this system. We show that we can directly observe that it is the complex d2 orbital occupied by the sixth electron at the high-spin Co-trig{3+} (d6) sites that generates this behavior. This is extremely rare in the research fie…
The double perovskite \bnoo with heptavalent Os ($d^1$) is observed to remain in the ideal cubic structure ({\it i.e.} without orbital ordering) despite single occupation of the $t_{2g}$ orbitals, even in the ferromagnetically ordered phase below 6.8 K. Analysis based on the {\it ab initio} dispersion expressed in terms of an Os $t_{2g}$-based Wannier function picture, spin-orbit coupling, Hund's coupling, and strong Coulomb repulsion shows that the magnetic OsO$_6$ cluster is near a moment-less condition due to spin and orbital compensation. Quenching (hybridization) then drives the emergence…
Nematicity and magnetism are two key features in Fe-based superconductors, and their interplay is one of the most important unsolved problems. In FeSe, the magnetic order is absent below the structural transition temperature $T_{str}=90$K, in stark contrast that the magnetism emerges slightly below $T_{str}$ in other families. To understand such amazing material dependence, we investigate the spin-fluctuation-mediated orbital order ($n_{xz}\neq n_{yz}$) by focusing on the orbital-spin interplay driven by the strong-coupling effect, called the vertex correction. This orbital-spin interplay is v…
We show that oxygen vacancies at titanate interfaces induce a complex multiorbital reconstruction which involves a lowering of the local symmetry and an inversion of t2g and eg orbitals resulting in the occupation of the eg orbitals of Ti atoms neighboring the O vacancy. The orbital reconstruction depends strongly on the clustering of O vacancies and can be accompanied by a magnetic splitting between the local eg orbitals with lobes directed towards the vacancy and interface dxy orbitals. The reconstruction generates a two-dimensional interface magnetic state not observed in bulk SrTiO3. Using…
We consider superconductivity in the presence of impurities in a two-band model suited for the description of iron-based superconductors. We analyze the effect of interband scattering processes on superconductivity, allowing for orbital, i.e., nonspin-magnetic but time-reversal symmetry-breaking impurities. Pair breaking in such systems is described by a nontrivial phase in an interband-scattering matrix element. We find that the transition temperature of conventional superconductors can be suppressed due to interband scattering, whereas unconventional superconductors may be unaffected. We als…
The simple structure of HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201) is ideal among cuprates for study of the pseudogap phase as a broken symmetry state. We have performed $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on an underdoped Hg1201 crystal with transition temperature of 74 K to look for circulating orbital currents proposed theoretically and inferred from neutron scattering. The narrow spectra preclude static local fields in the pseudogap phase at the apical site, suggesting that the moments observed with neutrons are fluctuating. The NMR frequency shifts are consistent with a dipolar field from the Cu$…
Effect of level statistics on local electronic states and local magnetism in nanoscale metallic grains with transition-metal impurity in the ballistic regime is studied. It is shown that the mean occupation of local electron and the local magnetic moment in nanoscale metallic grains with odd conduction electrons are larger than those with even conduction electrons. The effect of even-odd parity on the condition for the occurrence of local magnetic moment is also discussed, it is found that the critical value $ρ_{d}(0)U_{c}$ for the formation of local moment in nanoscale metallic grains is much…
Here we show that the 2.80(8) μB/Fe block antiferromagnetic order of BaFe2Se3 transforms into stripe antiferromagnetic order in KFe2Se3 with a decrease in moment to 2.1(1) μB/Fe. This reduction is larger than expected from the change in electron count from Ba$^{2+}$ to K$^{+}$, and occurs with the loss of the displacements of Fe atoms from ideal positions in the ladders, as found by neutron pair distribution function analysis. Intermediate compositions remain insulating, and magnetic susceptibility measurements show a suppression of magnetic order and probable formation of a spin-glass. Togeth…
The recently synthesized first 4d transition-metal oxide-hydride LaSr3NiRuO4H4 with the unusual high H:O ratio surprisingly displays no magnetic order down to 1.8 K. This is in sharp contrast to the similar unusual low-valent Ni+ - Ru2+ layered oxide LaSrNiRuO4 which has a rather high ferromagnetic (FM) ordering Curie temperature TC about 250 K. In this work, using density functional calculations with aid of crystal field level diagrams and superexchange pictures, we find that the contrasting magnetism is due to the distinct spin-orbital states of the Ru2+ ions (in addition to the common Ni+ S…
