We employ a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory to investigate the electronic structure of the recently synthesized insulator BaCrO$_3$. Our calculations show that Hund's coupling is responsible for strong correlation effects, which are however not sufficient to turn the system insulating. A finite Jahn-Teller distortion lifting the orbital degeneracy is necessary to stabilize an insulating state with orbital ordering and consequent magnetic ordering.
We study the influence of the lattice structure, the Jahn-Teller effect and the Hund's rule coupling on a metal-insulator transition in AnC60 (A= K, Rb). The difference in lattice structure favors A3C60 (fcc) being a metal and A4C60 (bct) being an insulator, and the coupling to Hg Jahn-Teller phonons favors A4C60 being nonmagnetic. The coupling to Hg (Ag) phonons decreases (increases) the value Uc of the Coulomb integral at which the metal-insulator transition occurs. There is an important partial cancellation between the Jahn-Teller effect and the Hund's rule coupling.
We use an extended two-band Kondo lattice model (KLM) to investigate the occurrence of different (anti-)ferromagnetic phases or phase separation depending on several model parameters. With regard to CMR-materials like the manganites we have added a Jahn-Teller term, direct antiferromagnetic coupling and Coulomb interaction to the KLM. The electronic properties are self-consistently calculated in an interpolating self-energy approach with no restriction to classical spins and going beyond mean-field treatments. Further on we do not have to limit the Hund's coupling to low or infinite values. Ze…
A realistic modeling of manganites should include the Coulomb repulsion between $e_g$ electrons, the Hund's rule coupling to $t_{2g}$ spins, and Jahn-Teller phonons. Solving such a model by dynamical mean field theory, we report large magnetoresistances and spectra in good agreement with experiments. The physics of the unusual, insulating-like paramagnetic phase is determined by correlated electrons which are-due to strong correlations-easily trapped as Jahn-Teller polarons.
We investigate the occurrence of Hund's rule magnetism in C60(n+-) molecular ions, by computing the ground-state spin for all charge states n from -3 to +5. The two competing interactions, electron-vibration (e-v, including Jahn Teller, favoring low spin) and electron-electron (e-e, including Hund-rule exchange, favoring high spin), are accounted for based on previously computed ab-initio coupling parameters. Treating the ion coordinates as classical, we first calculate and classify the static Jahn-Teller distorted states for all n, inclusive of both e-v and e-e effects. We then correct the ad…
The alkali-doped fullerides A$_3$C$_{60}$ are half-filled three-orbital Hubbard systems which exhibit an unconventional superconducting phase next to a Mott insulator. While the pairing is understood to arise from an effectively negative Hund coupling, the highly unusual Jahn-Teller metal near the Mott transition, featuring both localized and itinerant electrons, has not been understood. This property is consistently explained by a previously unrecognized phenomenon: the spontaneous transition of multiorbital systems with negative Hund coupling into an orbital-selective Mott state. This symmet…
We consider a model which includes the electron-phonon coupling to Ag or Jahn-Teller Hg phonons, the Coulomb interaction U and an exchange integral K. We study the metal-insulator transition for the integer fillings n=3 and 4. We find that the coupling to Ag phonons increases the critical value Uc where the transition takes place, while the coupling to Hg phonons decreases Uc. Without electron-phonon coupling the Hund's rule coupling also decreases Uc. There is, however, an interesting competition between the Hund's rule coupling and the Jahn-Teller effect. Thus the reduction of Uc due to the …
The elementary excitations of a model Hamiltonian that captures the low energy behavior of a simple two-fold degenerate Hubbard Hamiltonian with Hund's rule coupling, is studied. The phase diagram in the mean-field limit and in a two-site approach reveals a rich variety of phases where both the orbital and the spin degrees of freedom are ordered. We show that besides usual spin waves (magnons) there exist also orbital waves (orbitons) and, most interestingly, in a completely ferromagnetically coupled system, a combined spin-orbital excitation which can be visualized as a bound state of magnons…
The origin of the cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion and orbital-order in LaMnO3 is central to the physics of the manganites. The question is complicated by the simultaneous presence of tetragonal and GdFeO3-type distortions and the strong Hund's rule coupling between e_g and t_2g electrons. To clarify the situation we calculate the transition temperature for the Kugel-Khomskii superexchange mechanism by using the local density approximation+dynamical mean-field method, and disentangle the effects of super-exchange from those of lattice distortions. We find that super-exchange alone would yiel…
We introduce an effective model for $e_g$ electrons to describe quasi-two-dimensional layered La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_4$ nickelates and study it using correlated wave functions on $8 \times 8 $ and $6 \times 6 $ clusters. The effective Hamiltonian includes the kinetic energy, on-site Coulomb interactions for $e_g$ electrons (intraorbital $U$ and Hund's exchange $J_H$) and the coupling between $e_g$ electrons and Jahn-Teller distortions (static modes). The experimental ground state phases with inhomogeneous charge, spin and orbital order at the dopings $x=1/3$ and $x=1/2$ are reproduced very wel…

We compute, based on density-functional electronic-structure calculations, the Coulomb couplings in the h_u highest occupied orbital of molecular C60. We obtain a multiplet-averaged Hubbard U ~ 3 eV, and four Hund-rule-like intra-molecular multiplet-splitting terms, each of the order of few hundreds of meVs. According to these couplings, all C60^n+ ions should possess a high-spin ground state if kept in their rigid, undistorted form. Even after molecular distortions are allowed, however, the Coulomb terms still appear to be somewhat stronger than the previously calculated Jahn-Teller couplings…
Structural phase transition studies employing low-temperature transmission electron microscopy, and low-temperature x-ray diffraction have been carried out on nearly stoichiometric (δ=0.01) and off-stoichiometric (δ=0.12) versions of La0.2Sr0.8MnO3-δ manganite. The nearly stoichiometric La0.2Sr0.8MnO3-δ under goes a cubic to Jahn-Teller distorted C-type antiferromagnetic tetragonal phase-transition at 260K. For off-stoichiometric La0.2Sr0.8MnO3-δ the Jahn-Teller distorted tetragonal phase transition gets totally suppressed and the basic perovskite lattice remains cubic but shows a charge order…

We consider the two-band double exchange model for manganites with Jahn-Teller (JT) coupling and explore the suppression of the ferromagnetism because of the JT distortion. The localized spins of the $\emph{t}_{2g}$ electrons are represented in terms of the Schwinger bosons, and two spin-singlet Fermion operators are introduced instead of the $e_{g}$ electrons' operators. In terms of the new Fermi fields the on-site Hund's interaction is in a diagonal form and one accounts for it exactly. Integrating out the spin-singlet fermions, we derive an effective Heisenberg model for a vector which desc…
A double exchange model for degenerate $e_g$ orbitals with intra- and inter-orbital interactions has been studied for the electron doped manganites A$_{1-x}$B$_{x}$MnO$_3$ ($x > 0.5$). We show that such a model reproduces the observed phase diagram and orbital ordering in the intermediate bandwidth regime and the Jahn-Teller effect, considered to be crucial for the region $x<0.5$, does not play a major role in this region. Brink and Khomskii have already pointed this out and stressed the relevance of the anistropic hopping across the degenerate $e_g$ orbitals in the infinite Hund's coupling li…
Topological band insulators which are dynamically generated by electron-electron interactions have been the- oretically proposed in two and three dimensional lattice models. We present evidence that the two-dimensional version can be stabilized in digital (111) heterostructures of transition-metal oxides as a result of purely local interactions. The topological phases are accompanied by spontaneous ordering of complex orbitals and we discuss their stability with respect to the Hund's rule coupling, Jahn-Teller interaction and inversion symmetry breaking terms. As main competitors we identify s…
The experimental observation of multiferroic behavior in perovskite manganites with a spiral spin structure demands to clarify the origin of these magnetic states and their relation to ferroelectricity. We show that spin-spiral phases with diagonal wavevector and also the E-type phase exist for intermediate values of the Hund's rule and the Jahn-Teller coupling in the orbitally ordered and insulating state of the standard two-band model Hamiltonian for manganites. Our results support the spin-current mechanism for ferroelectricity and present an alternative view to earlier conclusions where fr…
We investigate the highly frustrated spin and orbital superexchange interactions in cubic vanadates. The fluctuations of $t_{2g}$ orbitals trigger a {\it novel mechanism of ferromagnetic interactions} between spins S=1 of V$^{3+}$ ions along one of the cubic directions which operates already in the absence of Hund's rule exchange $J_H$, and leads to the C-type antiferromagnetic phase in LaVO$_3$. The Jahn-Teller effect can stabilize the orbital ordering and the G-type antiferromagnetic phase at low temperatures, but large entropy due to orbital fluctuations favors again the C-phase at higher t…
We present our theoretical results on the ground states in layered triangular-lattice compounds ANiO2 (A=Na, Li, Ag). To describe the interplay between charge, spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom in these materials, we study a doubly-degenerate Hubbard model with electron-phonon couplings by the Hartree-Fock approximation combined with the adiabatic approximation. In a weakly-correlated region, we find a metallic state accompanied by \sqroot3x\sqroot3 charge ordering. On the other hand, we obtain an insulating phase with spin-ferro and orbital-ferro ordering in a wide range from inte…
Predicting magnetism originating from 2$p$ orbitals is a delicate problem, which depends on the subtle interplay between covalency and Hund's coupling. Calculations based on density functional theory and the local spin density approximation fail in two remarkably different ways. On the one hand the excessive delocalization of spin-polarized holes leads to half-metallic ground states and the expectation of room temperature ferromagnetism. On the other hand, in some cases a magnetic ground state may not be predicted at all. We demonstrate that a simple self-interaction correction scheme modifies…
The three dimensional perovskite manganites in the range of hole-doping $x > 0.5$ are studied in detail using a double exchange model with degenerate $e_g$ orbitals including intra- and inter-orbital correlations and near-neighbour Coulomb repulsion. We show that such a model captures the observed phase diagram and orbital-ordering in the intermediate to large band-width regime. It is argued that the Jahn-Teller effect, considered to be crucial for the region $x<0.5$, does not play a major role in this region, particularly for systems with moderate to large band-width. The anisotropic hopping …
The physics of manganites is often described within an effective two-band tight-binding (TB) model for the Mn e_g electrons, which apart from the kinetic energy includes also a local "Hund's rule" coupling to the t_{2g} core spin and a local coupling to the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion of the oxygen octahedra. We test the validity of this model by comparing the energy dispersion calculated for the TB model with the full Kohn-Sham band-structure calculated within the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) to density functional theory. We analyze the effect of magnetic order, JT distortions, and…
We investigate the two-orbital Hubbard model, which reproduces the electron and hole Fermi surfaces in the iron pnictide superconductors, in the presence of the Jahn-Teller electron-phonon coupling by using the dynamical mean-field theory. When the intra- and inter-orbital Coulomb interactions, $U$ and $U'$, increase with $U=U'$, both the local spin and orbital susceptibilities, $χ_{s}$ and $χ_{o}$, increase with $χ_{s}=χ_{o}$ because of the spin-orbital symmetry. Due to the Hund's rule coupling $J$, $χ_{s}$ is enhanced and dominates over $χ_{o}$ resulting in the repulsive local pairing intera…
Electronic state and the Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe_3O_4) are studied using a spinless three-band Hubbard model for 3d electrons on the B sites with the Hartree-Fock approximation and the exact diagonalisation method. Complex-orbital, e.g., 1/sqrt(2)[|zx> + i |yz>], ordered (COO) states having noncollinear orbital moments ~ 0.4 mu_B on the B sites are obtained with the cubic lattice structure of the high-temperature phase. The COO state is a novel form of magnetic ordering within the orbital degree of freedom. It arises from the formation of Hund's second rule states of spinless pseudo…
We investigate a two-orbital model for iron-based superconductors to elucidate the effect of interplay between electron correlation and Jahn-Teller electron-phonon coupling by using the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the exact diagonalization method. When the intra- and inter-orbital Coulomb interactions, $U$ and $U'$, increase with $U=U'$, both the local spin and orbital susceptibilities, $χ_{s}$ and $χ_{o}$, increase with $χ_{s}=χ_{o}$ in the absence of the Hund's rule coupling $J$ and the electron-phonon coupling $g$. In the presence of $J$ and $g$, there are distinct two regimes…
