The Feichtinger Conjecture, if true, would have as a corollary that for each set $E\subset \T$ and $Λ\subset \Z$, there is a partition $Λ_1,...,Λ_N$ of $\Z$ such that for each $1\le i \le N$, $\{\exp(2πi xλ): λ\in Λ_i\}$ is a Riesz sequence. In this paper, sufficient conditions on sets $E\subset \T$ and $Λ\subset \R$ are given so that $\{\exp(2πi xλ) 1_E: λ\in Λ\}$ can be uniformly partitioned into Riesz sequences.
Linear combinations of exponentials $e^{iλ_kt}$ in the case where the distance between some points $λ_k$ tends to zero are studied. D. Ullrich has proved the basis property of the divided differences of exponentials in the case when the groups consist of equal number of points all of them are close enough to integers. We have generalized this result for groups with arbitrary number of close points and obtained a full description of Riesz bases of exponential divided differences. The application to a control problem is presented.
We study weak-type estimates and exponential integrability for the variable order Riesz potential. As an application we prove an exponential integrability result with respect to the Hausdorff content for functions from variable exponent Sobolev spaces. In particular, the earlier exponential integrability results are improved to a corresponding one with respect to the Choque integral whenever John domains are considered. Moreover, new exponential integrability results also for domains with outward cusps are obtained.
We extend to several dimensions the result of K. Seip and Y.I. Lyubarskii that proves the existence of Riesz basis of exponentials for a finite union of intervals with equals lengths.
We study the construction of exponential frames and Riesz sequences for a class of fractal measures on ${\mathbb R}^d$ generated by infinite convolution of discrete measures using the idea of frame towers and Riesz-sequence towers. The exactness and overcompleteness of the constructed exponential frame or Riesz sequence is completely classified in terms of the cardinality at each level of the tower. Using a version of the solution of the Kadison-Singer problem, known as the $R_ε$-conjecture, we show that all these measures contain exponential Riesz sequences of infinite cardinality. Furthermor…
We provide a necessary and sufficient condition to ensure that a multi-tile $Ω$ of $R^d$ of positive measure (but not necessarily bounded) admits a structured Riesz basis of exponentials for $ L^{2}(Ω)$. New examples are given and this characterization is generalized to abstract locally compact abelian groups.
Let $S$ be the union of finitely many disjoint intervals on the real line. Suppose that there are two real numbers $α, β$ such that the length of each interval belongs to $Z α+ Z β$. We use quasicrystals to construct a discrete set of real frequencies such that the corresponding system of exponentials is a Riesz basis in the space $L^2(S)$.
We prove two new equivalences of the Feichtinger conjecture that involve reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. We prove that if for every Hilbert space, contractively contained in the Hardy space, each Bessel sequence of normalized kernel functions can be partitioned into finitely many Riesz basic sequences, then a general bounded Bessel sequence in an arbitrary Hilbert space can be partitioned into finitely many Riesz basic sequences. In addition, we examine some of these spaces and prove that for these spaces bounded Bessel sequences of normalized kernel functions are finite unions of Riesz bas…
We consider three special and significant cases of the following problem. Let D be a (possibly unbounded) set of finite Lebesgue measure in R^d. Find conditions on D for which the standard exponential basis on the unit cube of R^d is a frame, a Riesz sequence, or a Riesz basis on L^2(D).
Let $μ$ be a Borel probability measure with compact support. We consider exponential type orthonormal bases, Riesz bases and frames in $L^2(μ)$. We show that if $L^2(μ)$ admits an exponential frame, then $μ$ must be of pure type. We also classify various $μ$ that admits either kind of exponential bases, in particular, the discrete measures and their connection with integer tiles. By using this and convolution, we construct a class of singularly continuous measures that has an exponential Riesz basis but no exponential orthonormal basis. It is the first of such kind of examples.
A bounded, Riemann integrable and measurable set $K\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, which fulfills \[\sum\limits_{γ\inΓ}\mathbb{1}_K(x-γ)=k\text{ almost everywhere, $x\in\mathbb{R}^d$}\] for a lattice $Γ\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ is called $k$-tiling. If $K\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ is $k$-tiling $L^2(K)$ will admit a Riesz basis of exponentials. We use this result to construct generalized Riesz wavelet bases of $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$, arising from the action of suitable subsets of the affine group. One example of our construction is the first known shearlet Riesz basis.
Let S be a bounded, Riemann measurable set in R^d, and L be a lattice. By a theorem of Fuglede, if S tiles R^d with translation set L, then S has an orthogonal basis of exponentials. We show that, under the more general condition that S multi-tiles R^d with translation set L, S has a Riesz basis of exponentials. The proof is based on Meyer's quasicrystals.
For a partition of $[0,1]$ into intervals $I_1,\ldots,I_n$ we prove the existence of a partition of $\mathbb{Z}$ into $Λ_1,\ldots, Λ_n$ such that the complex exponential functions with frequencies in $ Λ_k$ form a Riesz basis for $L^2(I_k)$, and furthermore, that for any $J\subseteq\{1,\,2,\,\dots,\,n\}$, the exponential functions with frequencies in $ \bigcup_{j\in J}Λ_j$ form a Riesz basis for $L^2(I)$ for any interval $I$ with length $|I|=\sum_{j\in J}|I_j|$. The construction extends to infinite partitions of $[0,1]$, but with size limitations on the subsets $J\subseteq \mathbb{Z}$; it comb…
We find explicit stability bounds for exponential Riesz bases on domains of R^d. Our results generalize Kadec theorem and other stability theorems in the literature.
We consider systems of exponentials with frequencies belonging to simple quasicrystals in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We ask if there exist domains $S$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ which admit such a system as a Riesz basis for the space $L^2(S)$. We prove that the answer depends on an arithmetical condition on the quasicrystal. The proof is based on the connection of the problem to the discrepancy of multi-dimensional irrational rotations, and specifically, to the theory of bounded remainder sets. In particular it is shown that any bounded remainder set admits a Riesz basis of exponentials. This extends to several …
We discuss existence and stability of Riesz bases of exponential type of L^2(T) for special domains T called trapezoids. We construct exponential bases on L^2(T) when T is a finite union of rectangles with the same height. We also generalize our main theorems in dimension d\ge 3.
The Feichtinger conjecture for exponentials asserts that the following property holds for every fat Cantor subset B of the circle group: the set of restrictions to B of exponential functions can be covered by Riesz sets. In their seminal paper on the Kadison-Singer problem, Bourgain and Tzafriri proved that this property holds if the characteristic function of B has Sobolev regularity. Their probability based proof does not explicitly construct a Riesz cover. They also showed how to construct fat Cantor sets whose characteristic functions have Sobolev regularity. However, these fat Cantor sets…
We prove that if a Bessel sequence in a Hilbert space, that is indexed by a countably infinite group in an invariant manner, can be partitioned into finitely many Riesz basic sequences, then each of the sets in the partition can be chosen to be syndetic. We then apply this result to prove that if a Fourier frame for a measurable subset of a higher dimensional cube can be partitioned into Riesz basic sequences, then each subset can be chosen to be a syndetic subset of the corresponding higher dimensional integer lattice. Both of these results follow from a result about syndetic pavings of eleme…
Jorgensen and Pedersen have proven that a certain fractal measure $ν$ has no infinite set of complex exponentials which form an orthonormal set in $L^2(ν)$. We prove that any fractal measure $μ$ obtained from an affine iterated function system possesses a sequence of complex exponentials which forms a Riesz basic sequence, or more generally a Bessel sequence, in $L^2(μ)$ such that the frequencies have positive Beurling dimension.
In this note we investigate the existence of frames of exponentials for $L^2(Ω)$ in the setting of LCA groups. Our main result shows that sub-multitiling properties of $Ω\subset \widehat{G}$ with respect to a uniform lattice $Γ$ of $\widehat{G}$ guarantee the existence of a frame of exponentials with frequencies in a finite number of translates of the annihilator of $Γ$. We also prove the converse of this result and provide conditions for the existence of these frames. These conditions extend recent results on Riesz bases of exponentials and multitilings to frames.
Given a domain $Ω\subset\Bbb R^d$ with positive and finite Lebesgue measure and a discrete set $Λ\subset \Bbb R^d$, we say that $(Ω, Λ)$ is a {\it frame spectral pair} if the set of exponential functions $\mathcal E(Λ):=\{e^{2πi λ\cdot x}: λ\in Λ\}$ is a frame for $L^2(Ω)$. Special cases of frames include Riesz bases and orthogonal bases. In the finite setting $\Bbb Z_N^d$, $d, N\geq 1$, a frame spectral pair can be similarly defined. %(Here, $\Bbb Z_N$ is the cyclic abelian group of order.) We show how to construct and obtain new classes of frame spectral pairs in $\Bbb R^d$ by "adding" frame…
Let $S\subset\R^d$ be a bounded subset with positive Lebesgue measure. The Paley-Wiener space associated to $S$, $PW_S$, is defined to be the set of all square-integrable functions on $\R^d$ whose Fourier transforms vanish outside $S$. A sequence $(x_j:j\kin\N)$ in $\R^d$ is said to be a Riesz-basis sequence for $L_2(S)$ (equivalently, a complete interpolating sequence for $PW_S$) if the sequence $(e^{-i\la x_j,\cdot\ra}:j\kin\N)$ of exponential functions forms a Riesz basis for $L_2(S)$. Let $(x_j:j\kin\N)$ be a Riesz-basis sequence for $L_2(S)$. Given $λ>0$ and $f\in PW_S$, there is a unique…
The Kadison-Singer problem asks: does every pure state on the diagonal sublgebra of the C*-algebra of bounded operators on a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space admit a unique extension? A yes answer is equivalent to several open conjectures including Feichtinger's: every bounded frame is a finite union of Riesz sequences. We consider the special case: Feichtinger's conjecture for exponentials and prove that the set of projections onto a measurable subset of the circle group of the set of exponential functions equals a union of a finite number of Reisz sequences if and only if there e…
