We report a study of the triangular lattice Heisenberg magnet NiGa2S4 by the positive muon spin rotation and relaxation technique. We unravel three temperature regimes: (i) below T_c = 9.2(2) K a spontaneous static magnetic field at the muon site is observed and the spin dynamics is appreciable: the time scale of the modes we probe is ~ 7 ns; (ii) an unconventional stretched exponential relaxation function is found for T_c < T < T_{cross} where T_{cross} = 12.6 K, which is a signature of a multichannel relaxation for this temperature range; (iii) above T_{cross}, the relaxation is exponential as expected for a conventional compound. The transition at T_c is of the continuous type. It occurs at a temperature slightly smaller than the temperature at which the specific heat displays a maximum at low temperature. This is reminiscent of the behavior expected for the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We argue that these results reflect the presence of topological defects above T_c.
Using magnetic torque measurement on a NaNiO2 single crystal, we have established the magnetic phase diagram of this triangular compound. It presents 5 different phases depending on the temperature (4 K - 300 K) and magnetic field (0 - 22 T) revealing several spin reorientations coupled to different magnetic anisotropies.
Zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements of the frustrated triangular quantum magnet AgNiO2 are consistent with a model of charge disproportionation that has been advanced to explain the structural and magnetic properties of this compound. Below an ordering temperature of T_N=19.9(2) K we observe six distinct muon precession frequencies, due to the magnetic order, which can be accounted for with a model describing the probable muon sites. The precession frequencies show an unusual temperature evolution which is suggestive of the separate evolution of two opposing magnetic sublattices.
The origin of the lowest-temperature anomaly reported several years ago using a polycrystalline sample of the spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 had remained unresolved. Here we finally clarify its origin by susceptibility measurements down to 65 mK using single crystals under accurate control of the magnetic fields in two independent directions. We demonstrate that the transition is induced under a subtle field combination that precisely cancel the nearest-neighbor spin interactions acting on the spins on the triangular lattice within the pyrochlore structure. Contrary to the other two fieldinduced t…
Using muon spin resonance we examine the organometallic hybrid compound Cu(1,3-benzenedicarboxylate) [Cu(1,3-bdc)], which has structurally perfect spin 1/2 copper kagome planes separated by pure organic linkers. This compound has antiferromagnetic interactions with Curie-Weiss temperature of -33 K. We found slowing down of spin fluctuations starting at T=1.8 K, and that the state at T->0 is quasi-static with no long-range order and extremely slow spin fluctuations at a rate of 3.6 1/usec. This indicates that Cu(1,3-bdc) behaves as expected from a kagome magnet and could serve as a model kagome…
We report magnetization, specific heat, muon spin rotation and Na NMR measurements on the S=3/2 rhombohedrally stacked Heisenberg antiferromagnet NaCrO2. This compound appears to be an ideal candidate for the study of triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets with very weak interlayer coupling. While specific heat and magnetization measurements indicate the occurrence of a transition in the range 40-46 K, both muon spin rotation and NMR reveal a fluctuating regime extending well below T_c, with a peak of relaxation rate 1/T1 around 30 K. This novel finding is discussed within the context of excit…
A 59Co NMR study of CoO2, the x=0 end member of AxCoO2 (A = Na, Li...) cobaltates, reveals a metallic ground state, though with clear signs of strong electron correlations: low-energy spin fluctuations develop at wave vectors q different from 0 and a crossover to a Fermi-liquid regime occurs below a characteristic temperature T*~7 K. Despite some uncertainty over the exact cobalt oxidation state n this material, the results show that electronic correlations are revealed as x is reduced below 0.3. The data are consistent with NaxCoO2 being close to the Mott transition in the x -> 0 limit.
We present single crystal inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the S=1 dimerized quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$. The singlet-triplet dispersion reveals nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions between adjacent bilayers that compete against each other. Although the inter-bilayer exchange is comparable to the intra-bilayer exchange, this additional frustration reduces the effective coupling along the c-axis and leads to a quasi-two dimensional behavior. In addition, the obtained exchange values are able to reproduce the four critical …
We report the results of muon-spin relaxation measurements on the low-dimensional antiferromagnet Rb4Cu(MoO4)3. No long-range magnetic order is observed down to 50 mK implying a ratio T_N/J<0.005 (where J is the principal exchange strength along the spin chains) and an effective ratio of interchain to intrachain exchange of |J_perp/J|<2 x 10^-3, making the material an excellent realization of a one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We probe the persistent spin excitations at low temperatures and find that ballistic spin transport dominates the excitations detected below 0.3 K.
We present the results of muon-spin relaxation ($μ^{+}$SR) measurements on the kagome staircase compounds Ni$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and Co$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$. The magnetic behavior of these materials may be described in terms of two inequivalent magnetic ion sites, known as spine sites and cross-tie sites. Our $μ^{+}$SR results allow us to probe each of these sites individually, revealing the distribution of the local magnetic fields near these positions. We are able not only to confirm the magnetic structures of the various phases proposed on the basis of bulk measurements but also to give an i…
We present the results of muon-spin relaxation measurements on the triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet $α$-KCrO$_{2}$. We observe sharp changes in behaviour at an ordering temperature of $T_{\mathrm{c}}=23$ K, with an additional broad feature in the muon-spin relaxation rate evident at T=13 K, both of which correspond to features in the magnetic contribution to the heat capacity. This behaviour is distinct from both the Li- and Na- containing members of the series. These data may be qualitatively described with the established theoretical predictions for the underlying spin system.
Organic salts represent an ideal experimental playground for studying the interplay between magnetic and charge degrees of freedom, which has culminated in the discovery of several spin-liquid candidates, such as $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ ($κ$-Cu). Recent theoretical studies indicate the possibility of chiral spin liquids stabilized by ring-exchange, but the parent states with chiral magnetic order have not been observed in this material family. In this work, we discuss the properties of the recently synthesized $κ$-(BETS)$_2$Mn[N(CN)$_2$]$_3$ ($κ$-Mn). Based on analysis of specific heat, mag…
We report muon spin relaxation measurements on two Ti3+ containing perovskites, LaTiO3 and YTiO3, which display long range magnetic order at low temperature. For both materials, oscillations in the time-dependence of the muon polarization are observed which are consistent with three-dimensional magnetic order. From our data we identify two magnetically inequivalent muon stopping sites. The muon spin relaxation results are compared with the magnetic structures of these compounds previously derived from neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation studies on structurally similar compounds.
The ground state of the quantum spin system kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu2(CN)3 in which antiferromagnetically-interacting S=1/2 spins are located on a nearly equilateral triangular lattice attracts considerable interest both from experimental and theoretical aspects, because a simple antiferromagnetic order may be inhibited because of the geometrical frustration and hence an exotic ground state is expected. Furthermore, recent two reports on the ground state of this system have made it further intriguing by showing completely controversial results; one indicates the gapless state and the other gapped. …
We report the magnetic properties of compounds in the KBaRE(BO3)2 family (RE= Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb), materials with a planar triangular lattice composed of rare earth ions. The samples were analyzed by x-ray diffraction and crystallize in the space group R-3m. Physical property measurements indicate the compounds display predominantly antiferromagnetic interactions between spins without any signs of magnetic ordering above 1.8 K. The ideal 2D rare earth triangular layers in this structure type make it a potential model system for investigating magnetic frustration in rare-earth-b…
We present our theoretical results on the ground states in layered triangular-lattice compounds ANiO2 (A=Na, Li, Ag). To describe the interplay between charge, spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom in these materials, we study a doubly-degenerate Hubbard model with electron-phonon couplings by the Hartree-Fock approximation combined with the adiabatic approximation. In a weakly-correlated region, we find a metallic state accompanied by \sqroot3x\sqroot3 charge ordering. On the other hand, we obtain an insulating phase with spin-ferro and orbital-ferro ordering in a wide range from inte…
We report results of muon spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) experiments on the spin-liquid candidate~YbMgGaO$_{4}$. No static magnetism $\gtrsim 0.003μ_B$ per Yb ion, ordered or disordered, is observed down to 22~mK, a factor of two lower in temperature than previous measurements. Persistent (temperature-independent) spin dynamics are observed up to 0.20~K and at least 1~kOe, thus extending previous zero-field $μ$SR results over a substantial region of the $H$-$T$ phase diagram. Knight shift measurements in a 10-kOe transverse field reveal two lines with nearly equal amplitudes. Inhomogeneo…
Here, we report the synthesis and magnetic properties of a Yb-based triangular-lattice compound LiYbS$_2$. At low temperatures, it features an effective spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ state due to the combined effect of crystal electric field and spin orbit coupling. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance experiments reveal the absence of magnetic long range ordering down to 2~K, which suggests a possible quantum spin liquid ground state. A dominant antiferromagnetic nearest neighbour exchange interaction $J/k_{\rm B}\simeq$ 5.3~K could be extracted form the magnetic su…
We report the synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of two new quantum antiferromagnets A3ReO5Cl2 (A = Sr and Ba). The crystal structure is isostructural with the mineral pinalite Pb3WO5Cl2, in which the Re6+ ion is square-pyramidally coordinated by five oxide atoms, and forms an anisotropic triangular lattice (ATL) made of S = 1/2 spins. The magnetic interactions J and J' in the ATL are estimated from magnetic susceptibilities to be 19.5 (44.9) and 9.2 (19.3) K, respectively, with J'/J = 0.47 (0.43) for A = Ba (Sr). For each compound, heat capacity at low temperatures shows a …
We report muon-spin rotation, heat capacity, magnetization, and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements of the layered spin-1/2 antiferromagnet NaNiO2. These show the onset of long-range magnetic order below T_N = 19.5K. Rapid muon depolarization persisting to about 5K above T_N is consistent with the presence of short-range magnetic order. The temperature and frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility suggests that magnetic clusters persist above 25K in the paramagnetic state and that their volume fraction decreases with increasing temperature. A frequency dependent peak in the ac magnetic…
We present data on the magnetic properties of two classes of layered spin S=1/2 antiferromagnetic quasi-triangular lattice materials: $Cu_{2(1-x)}Zn_{2x}(OH)_3NO_3$ ($0 < x < 0.65$) and its long chain organic derivatives $Cu_{2(1-x)}Zn_{2x}(OH)_3(C_7H_{15}COO)\cdot mH_2O$ ($0 < x < 0.29$), where non-magnetic Zn substitutes Cu isostructurally. It is found that the long-chain compounds, even in a clean system in the absence of dilution, $x\!=\!0$, show spin-glass behavior, as evidenced by DC and AC susceptibility, and by time dependent magnetization measurements. A striking feature is the observ…
Motivated by recent experimental progress on triangular lattice heavy-fermion compounds, we investigate possible Lifshitz transitions and the scanning tunnel microscope (STM) spectra of the Kondo-Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. In the heavy Fermi liquid state, the introduced Heisenberg antiferromagnetic interaction ($J_H$) results in the twice Lifshitz transition at the case of the nearest-neighbour electron hopping but with next-nearest-neighbour hole hopping and the case of the nearest-neighbour hole hopping but with next-nearest-neighbour electron hopping, respectively. Driven b…
The trigonal compound EuSn2As2 was recently discovered to host Dirac surface states within the bulk band gap and orders antiferromagnetically below the Neel temperature TN = 24 K. Here the magnetic ground state of single-crystal EuSn2As2 and the evolution of its properties versus temperature T and applied magnetic field H are reported. Included are zero-field single-crystal neutron-diffraction measurements versus T, magnetization M(H,T), magnetic susceptibility chi(H,T) = M(T)/H, heat capacity Cp(H,T), and electrical resistivity rho(H,T) measurements. The neutron-diffraction and chi(T) measure…
We have carried out neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation (muSR) and inelastic neutron scattering investigations on a polycrystalline sample of CeOs2Al10 to investigate the nature of the phase transition observed near 29 K in the resistivity and heat capacity. Our muSR data clearly reveal coherent frequency oscillations below 28 K, indicating the presence of an internal field at the muon site, which confirms the long-range magnetic ordering of the Ce-moment below 28 K. Upon cooling the sample below 15 K, unusual behaviour of the temperature dependent muSR frequencies may indicate either a …
A triangular lattice selenide series of rare earth (RE), CsRESe2, were synthesized as large single crystals using a flux growth method. This series stabilized in either trigonal (R-3m) or hexagonal (P63/mmc) crystal systems. Physical properties of CsRESe2 were explored by magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements down to 0.4 K. Antiferromagnetic interaction was observed in all magnetic compounds, while no long-range magnetic order was found, indicating the frustrated magnetism. CsDySe2 presents spin freezing at 0.7 K, revealing a spin-glass state. CsCeSe2 and CsYbSe2 present broad…
Correlation between dielectric and magnetic properties was investigated on the triangular lattice antiferromagnets ACrO2 (A= Cu, Ag, Li, or Na) showing 120-degree spiral spin structure with easy-axis anisotropy. For the A= Cu and Ag compounds with delafossite structure, ferroelectric polarization emerges upon the spiral spin order, implying the strong coupling between the ferroelectricity and spiral spin structure. On the other hand, for the A = Li and Na compounds with ordered rock salt structure, no polarization but only clear anomalies in dielectric constant can be observed upon the spiral …
Two$-$dimensional (2D) triangular lattices antiferromagnets (2D$-$TLA) often manifest intriguing physical and technological properties, due to the strong interplay between lattice geometry and electronic properties. The recently synthesized 2$-$dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide LiCrTe$_2$, being a 2D$-$TLA, enriched the range of materials which can present such properties. In this work, muon spin rotation ($μ^+$SR) and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) have been utilized to reveal the true magnetic nature and ground state of LiCrTe$_2$. From high$-$resolution NPD the magnetic spin ord…

Spin-liquid behavior was recently suggested experimentally in the moderately one-dimensional organic compound $κ$-H$_3$(Cat-EDT-TTF)$_2$. This compound can be modeled by the one-band Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice with $t^\prime/t \simeq 1.5$, where $t'$ is the minority hopping. It thus becomes important to extend previous studies, that were performed in the range $0 \leq t'/t \leq 1.2$, to find out whether there is a regime where Mott insulating behavior can be found without long-range magnetic order. To this end, we study the above model in the range $1.2 \leq t'/t \leq …
We report the synthesis of the entire $Ln$AuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ ($Ln$ = Y, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm) series and focus on the magnetic properties of GdAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ and TbAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$. Temperature and magnetic field dependent magnetization, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity measurements reveal that both compounds exhibit several magnetically ordered states at low temperatures, with evidence for magnetic fluctuations extending into the paramagnetic temperature region. For magnetic fields applied in the $ab$-plane there are several ordered state regions that are associated with …
We study spin fluctuation (SF) mediated superconductivity (SC) in a half-filled square lattice Hubbard model with the transfer matrices -t between nearest neighbor sites and -t' between a half of next nearest neighbor sites neighboring along only one of the <1,1> directions, considering application of this model to organic kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2X compounds. Varying the t'/t value from 0 to 1, one can interpolate between a square and an equilateral triangular lattice, the latter giving frustration to antiferromagnetically (AF) coupled spin systems. Within the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximatio…
The weakly interacting S=1/2 dimers system Sr3Cr2O8 has been investigated by powder neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering. Our data reveal a structural phase transition below room temperature corresponding to an antiferro-orbital ordering with nearly 90 degrees arrangement of the occupied 3z^2-r^2 d-orbital. This configuration leads to a drastic reduction of the inter-dimer exchange energies with respect to the high temperature orbital-disorder state, as shown by a spin-dimer analysis of the super-superexchange interactions performed using the Extended Huckel Tight Binding metho…
The spin-web compound Cu3TeO6, belongs to an intriguing group of materials where magnetism is governed by 3d9 copper Cu2+ ions. This compound has been sparsely experimentally studied and we here present the first investigation of its local magnetic properties using muon-spin relaxation/rotation (μ+SR). Our results show a clear long-range 3D magnetic order below TN as indicated by clear zero-field (ZF) muon-precessions. At TN = 61.7 K a very sharp transition is observed in the weak transverse-field (wTF) as well as ZF data. Contrary to suggestions by susceptibility measurements and inelastic ne…
We have investigated the magnetic and the superconducting properties of the hybrid ruthenate-cuprate compound RuSr_{2}GdCu_{2}O_{8} by means of zero-field muon spin rotation- (ZF-$μ$SR) and DC magnetization measurements. The DC-magnetisation data establish that this material exhibits ferromagnetic order of the Ru-moments ($μ(Ru) \approx 1 μ_{B}$) below T_{Curie} = 133 K and becomes superconducting at a much lower temperature T_c = 16 K. The ZF-$μ$SR experiments indicate that the ferromagnetic phase is homogeneous on a microscopic scale and accounts for most of the sample volume. They also sugg…
We report on comprehensive results identifying the ground state of a triangular-lattice structured YbZnGaO$_4$ to be spin glass, including no long-range magnetic order, prominent broad excitation continua, and absence of magnetic thermal conductivity. More crucially, from the ultralow-temperature a.c. susceptibility measurements, we unambiguously observe frequency-dependent peaks around 0.1 K, indicating the spin-glass ground state. We suggest this conclusion to hold also for its sister compound YbMgGaO$_4$, which is confirmed by the observation of spin freezing at low temperatures. We conside…
We report high-resolution x-ray diffraction, muon-spin-rotation spectroscopic and specific heat measurements in the double spin-chains compound $\rm LiCu_2O_2$. The x-ray diffraction results show that the crystal structure of $\rm LiCu_2O_2$ ~is orthorhombic down to T=10K. Anisotropic line-broadening of the diffraction peaks is observed, indicating disorder along the spin chains. Muon spin relaxation and specific heat measurements show that $\rm LiCu_2O_2$ ũndergoes a phase transition to a magnetic ordered state at $\rm T_1\sim24K$. The specific heat data exhibits a second $\rm λ$-like peak at…
The magnetic behavior and effects of oxygen-reduction annealing on the magnetism of T'-structured R2CuO4 (R = Eu and Nd), which is the parent compound of electron-doped cuprate superconductors, have been investigated from muon spin rotation (muSR) measurements. In the muon time spectra of as-sintered R2CuO4, an oscillation component with a small amplitude and a dominant exponential-type decay component were observed for the temperature range between 150 K and TN1 (=250-270 K). This observation suggests an inhomogeneous magnetic phase of a fluctuating spin state and a locally ordered spin state…
Polycrystalline samples of NaYbO$_2$ are investigated by bulk magnetization and specific-heat measurements, as well as by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance (ESR) as local probes. No signatures of long-range magnetic order are found down to 0.3~K, evidencing a highly frustrated spin-liquid-like ground state in zero field. Above 2\,T, signatures of magnetic order are observed in thermodynamic measurements, suggesting the possibility of a field-induced quantum phase transition. The $^{23}$Na NMR relaxation rates reveal the absence of magnetic order and persistent fluctu…
The results of muon-spin relaxation and heat capacity measurements on two pyroxene compounds LiFeSi2O6 and NaFeSi2O6 demonstrate that despite their underlying structural similarity the magnetic ordering is considerably different. In LiFeSi2O6 a single muon precession frequency is observed below TN, consistent with a single peak at TN in the heat capacity and a commensurate magnetic structure. In applied magnetic fields the heat capacity peak splits in two. In contrast, for natural NaFeSi2O6, where multiferroicity has been observed in zero-magnetic-field, a rapid Gaussian depolarization is obse…
We investigate the thermodynamic properties of the ytterbium-based triangular lattice compound Ba3Yb(BO3)3. The results demonstrate the absence of any long-range ordering down to 56 mK. Analysis of the magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat measurements suggests that Ba3Yb(BO3)3 may realize a S = 1/2 quantum dipole lattice, in which the dominant interaction is the long range dipole-dipole coupling on the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice, and exchange interactions are subdominant or negligible.
Yb-based triangular magnets have recently attracted attention as promising candidates to explore frustrated quantum magnetism. However, some candidates have turned out to have significant amounts of site disorder, which significantly affects the low-temperature magnetic behavior. To overcome this issue, Yb-based frustrated systems without structural disorder are required. In this paper, we report physical properties of two Yb-based triangular magnets Ba3YbB3O9 and Ba3YbB9O18, without structural disorder. Via magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and muon spin rotation measurements, we verifi…
A novel doubly chiral magnetic order is found out in the structurally chiral langasite compound Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$. The magnetic moments are distributed over planar frustrated triangular lattices of triangle units. On each of these they form the same triangular configuration. This ferro-chiral arrangement is helically modulated from plane to plane. Unpolarized neutron scattering on a single crystal associated with spherical neutron polarimetry proved that a single triangular chirality together with a single helicity is stabilized in an enantiopure crystal. A mean field analysis allow…
The behavior in magnetic field of a paramagnetic center is characterized by its $g$ tensor. An anisotropic form of the latter implies different kind of response along different crystallographic directions. Here we shed light on the anisotropy of the $g$ tensor of Yb$^{3+}$ 4$f^{13}$ ions in NaYbS$_2$ and NaYbO$_2$, layered triangular-lattice materials suggested to host spin-liquid ground states. Using quantum chemical calculations we show that, even if the ligand-cage trigonal distortions are significant in these compounds, the crucial role in realizing strongly anisotropic, `noncubic' $g$ fac…
We have investigated the non-centrosymmetric tetragonal heavy-fermion compound CeAuAl3 using muon spin rotation (muSR), neutron diffraction (ND) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. We have also revisited the magnetic, transport and thermal properties. The magnetic susceptibility reveals an antiferromagnetic transition at 1.1 K with a possibility of another magnetic transition near 0.18 K. The heat capacity shows a sharp lambda-type anomaly at 1.1 K in zero-filed, which broadens and moves to higher temperature in applied magnetic field. Our zero-field muSR and ND measurements c…
Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy was performed to directly probe the low-energy (1-5 meV) electrodynamics of triangular lattice antiferromagnets CuFe1-xGaxO2 (x = 0.00, 0.01, and 0.035). We discovered an electromagnon (electric-field-active magnon) excitation at 2.3 meV in the paraelectric up-up-down-down collinear magnetic phase, while this electromagnon vanishes in the ferroelectric helimagnetic phase. Anti-correlation with noncollinear magnetism excludes the exchange-striction mechanism as the origin of dynamical magnetoelectric coupling, and hence evidences the observation of spin-orbit …
Muon spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) experiments on single crystals of the structurally perfect triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ indicate the absence of both static long-range magnetic order and spin freezing down to 0.048 K in zero field. Below 0.4 K, the $μ^{+}$ spin relaxation rates, which are proportional to the dynamic correlation function of the Yb$^{3+}$ spins, exhibit temperature-independent plateaus. Same behavior is revealed by temperature-independent local susceptibilities extracted from the Knight shifts of the $μ^{+}$ spin rotation frequencies under a transverse field of…
Frustrated transition metal compounds in which spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and electron correlation work together have attracted much attention recently. In the case of 5$d$ transition metals, where SOC is large, $j_\text{eff}=1/2$ bands near the Fermi level are thought to encompass the essential physics of the material, potentially leading to a concrete realization of exotic magnetic phases such as the Kitaev spin liquid. Here we derive a spin model on a triangular lattice based on $j_\text{eff} = 1/2$ pseudospins that interact via antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ($J$) and Kitaev ($K$) exchanges, …
We present a study of the magnetic susceptibility $χ_{mol}$ under variable hydrostatic pressure on single crystals of Cs$_2$CuCl$_{4-x}$Br$_x$. This includes the border compounds \textit{x} = 0 and 4, known as good realizations of the distorted triangular-lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet, as well as the isostructural stoichiometric systems Cs$_2$CuCl$_{3}$Br$_1$ and Cs$_2$CuCl$_{2}$Br$_2$. For the determination of the exchange coupling constants $J$ and $J^{\prime}$, $χ_{mol}$ data were fitted by a $J-J^{\prime}$ model \cite{Schmidt2015}. Its application, validated for the border co…
The rare-earth ferroelectromagnet YMnO3 consists of weakly coupled triangular layers of S=2 spins. Below T_N ~ 70 K muon-spin relaxation data show two oscillatory relaxing signals due to magnetic order, with no relaxing signal resolvable (which would be expected for different coexisting spin distributions). The transition temperature T_N increases with applied hydrostatic pressure, even though the ordered moment decreases. These results suggest that pressure increases both the exchange coupling between the layers and the frustration within the layers.
In positive muon spin rotation and relaxation spectroscopy it is becoming nowadays customary to take advantage of Density Functional Theory (DFT) based computational methods to aid the experimental data analysis. DFT aided muon site determination is especially useful for measurements performed in magnetic materials, where large contact hyperfine interactions may arise. Here we present a systematic analysis of the accuracy of the ab initio estimation of muon's hyperfine contact field on elemental transition metals, performing state of the art spin-polarized plane wave DFT and using the projecto…
