We report the discovery of a coherent magnetic spiral structure within the nearby ringed Sab galaxy NGC 4736. High sensitivity radio polarimetric data obtained with the VLA at 8.46GHz and 4.86GHz show a distinct ring of total radio emission precisely corresponding to the bright inner pseudoring visible in other wavelengths. However, unlike the total radio emission, the polarized radio emission reveals a clear pattern of ordered magnetic field of spiral shape, emerging from the galactic centre. The magnetic vectors do not follow the tightly-wrapped spiral arms that characterize the inner pseudoring, but instead cross the ring with a constant and large pitch angle of about 35deg. The ordered field is thus not local adjusted to the pattern of star-formation activity, unlike what is usually observed in grand-design spirals. The observed asymmetric distribution of Faraday rotation suggests the possible action of a large-scale MHD dynamo. The strong magnetic total and regular field within the ring (up to 30microG and 13microG, respectively) indicates that a highly efficient process of magnetic field amplification is under way, probably related to secular evolutionary processes in the galaxy.
The kinematical features of the Sagittarius (R=5.7 kpc), Carina (R=6.5 kpc), Cygnus (R=6.8 kpc), and Perseus (R=8.2 kpc) arm fragments suggest the existence of two spiral patterns rotating at different angular velocities in the Galaxy. The inner spiral pattern represented by the Sagittarius arm rotates at the angular velocity of the bar, Omega=60(+/-5) km s-1 kpc-1. The outer spiral pattern, which consists of the Carina, Cygnus and Perseus arms, rotates at a smaller angular velocity, Omega=12-22 km s-1 kpc-1. The existence of the outer slow tightly wound spiral pattern and the inner fast spira…
NGC 3642 was classified as a spiral galaxy with three rings and no bar. We have performed an HI and optical study of this nearly face-on galaxy. We find that the nuclear ring might in fact be part of an inner one-armed spiral, that could be driving nuclear accretion and feeding the central activity in the inner kpc. The inner ring is faint, and the outer ring is a rather ill-defined pseudoring. Furthermore, the size ratio of the rings is such that they cannot be due to a single pattern speed linking them together. The outer pseudoring is peculiar, since it lies in the faint outer parts of the …
We have made observations of the \ion{H}{1} in the southern ringed barred spiral galaxies NGC~1433 and NGC~6300 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the main goal being to test the resonance theory for the origin of these rings. NGC~1433 is the prototypical ringed barred spiral, and displays distinct \ion{H}{1}~counterparts to its nuclear ring, inner ring, outer pseudoring, and plume-like features. The $L_{4}$ and $L_{5}$ regions at corotation, as well as the bar itself, are relatively devoid of neutral atomic hydrogen. By associating the inner ring of NGC~1433 with the inner sec…
The morphology of the outer rings of early-type spiral galaxies is compared to integrations of massless collisionless particles initially in nearly circular orbits. Particles are perturbed by a quadrupolar gravitational potential corresponding to a growing and secularly evolving bar. We find that outer rings with R1R2 morphology and pseudorings are exhibited by the simulations even though they lack gaseous dissipation. Simulations with stronger bars form pseudorings earlier and more quickly than those with weaker bars. We find that the R1 ring, perpendicular to the bar, is fragile and dissolve…
We present detailed numerical simulations of NGC 1433, an intermediate-type barred spiral showing strong morphological features including a secondary bar, nuclear ring, inner ring, outer pseudoring, and two striking, detached spiral arcs known as ``plumes.'' This galaxy is an ideal candidate for recreating the observed morphology through dynamical models and determining the pattern speed. We derived a gravitational potential from an $H$-band image of the galaxy and simulated the behavior of a two-dimensional disk of 100,000 inelastically colliding gas particles. We find that the closest matchi…
We have tested the applicability of the global modal approach in the density wave theory of spiral structure for a sample of six spiral galaxies: NGC 488, NGC 628, NGC 1566, NGC 2985, NGC 3938 and NGC 6503. The galaxies demonstrate a variety of spiral patterns from the regular open and tightly wound spiral patterns to a multi-armed spiral structure. Using the observed radial distributions of the stellar velocity dispersions and the rotation curves we have constructed equilibrium models for the galactic disks in each galaxy and analyzed the dynamics of the spiral perturbations using linear glob…
The identification of young star groupings (YSG) in the three spiral galaxies NGC 3377A, NGC 3507, NGC 4394 is obtained by mean of the statistical method described in Paper I. We find 83, 90, 185 YSGs, respectively. An identification map of YSGs, as well as their size distribution, their B-luminosity function, their surface luminosity density radial behaviour, are presented and comparatively discussed. These data, in addition to those in Paper I, constitute a first sample suitable for seeking correlations among properties of galaxies and their YSG, which we briefly discuss here.
We present an observational and theoretical study of the spiral structure in galaxy NGC 1566. A digitized image of NGC 1566 in I-band was used for measurements of the radial dependence of amplitude variations in the spiral arms. We use the known velocity dispersion in the disk of NGC 1566, together with its rotation curve, to construct linear and 2D nonlinear simulations which are then compared with observations. A two-armed spiral is the most unstable linear global mode in the disk of NGC 1566. The nonlinear simulations are in agreement with the results of the linear modal analysis, and the t…
CCD observations in V, I and H$_α$ for NGC 3389 are used to present photometry of 61 HII regions. Their $α$ and $δ$ positions, diameters and their absolute luminosities have been determined. The luminosity and size distribution functions of the HII regions in NGC 3389 are discussed.
The results of the stellar photometry of the images ACS/WFC and WFPC2 of the HST are used to study stellar population and spatial distribution of stars in three edge-on galaxies: NGC 891, NGC 4144 and NGC 4244. The measuring of the number density of the old stars revealed two stellar substructures in these galaxies: thick disk and halo. The borders of these substructures consisting mainly of red giants, are determined by the change of number density gradient of the old stars. The revealed halos have flattened shapes and extend up to 25 kpc from the galaxy planes. The obtained results of number…
We present major and minor-axis kinematics of stars and ionized gas as well as narrow and broad-band surface photometry of the Sa spiral NGC 2855. In the nuclear regions of this unbarred and apparently undisturbed spiral galaxy the gas is rotating perpendicularly to the galaxy disk. We suggest that this kinematically-decoupled component is the signature of an acquisition process in the history of this galaxy.
We present for the first time a two-dimensional velocity field of the central region of the grand-design spiral galaxy NGC 5248, at 0.9 arcsec spatial resolution. The H-alpha velocity field is dominated by circular rotation. While no systematic streaming motions are seen in the area of the nuclear grand-design spiral or the circumnuclear ring, the amplitude of residual velocities, after subtracting a model circular velocity field, reaches 20 km/s in projection. The rotation curve levels out at around 140 km/s, after a well-resolved and rather shallow rise. We have generated an analytical model…
By using images from the HST/WFPC2/ACS archive, we have analyzed the spatial distribution of the AGB and RGB stars along the galactocentric radius of nearby spiral galaxies M~81, NGC 300 and NGC 55. Using color-magnitude diagrams and stellar luminosity functions, we gauge the stellar contents of the surroundings of three galaxies. The red giant population (RGB) identified at large galactocentric radii yields a distance of $3.85\pm0.08$ Mpc for M~81, $2.12\pm0.10$ Mpc for NGC 55, and $2.00\pm0.13$ Mpc for NGC 300, and a mean stellar metallicity of $-$0.65, $-$1.25, and $-$0.87. We find that the…
We have carried out the wind analysis of six A-type supergiants in NGC 300. The derived Wind Momentum-Luminosity Relationship is compared with that of Galactic and M31 blue supergiants and with theoretical models.
We determined ages for 52 star clusters with masses < 10^6 solar masses in the low surface brightness spiral galaxy NGC 45. Four of these candidates are old globular clusters located in the bulge. The remaining ones span a large age range. The cluster ages suggest a continuous star/cluster formation history without evidence for bursts, consistent with the galaxy being located in a relatively unperturbed environment in the outskirts of the Sculptor group.
A single merger scenario for making galaxies such as NGC 4550 possessing equal coplanar counter-rotating stellar disks is investigated by collisionless N-body technique. The scenario is successful in producing an axisymmetric disk made of two almost equal counter-rotating populations. The final disk shows a clear bimodal line profile in the outer part, which demonstrates that disk-disk mergers do not always produce ellipticals.
We report the discovery of trailing grand-design nuclear spiral structure in the spiral galaxy NGC 5248. Two tightly-wound red spiral arms, with widths less than 1 arcsec (~75 pc), emanate at 1 arcsec outside the quiescent nucleus of the galaxy, and can be followed for 3 arcsec, appearing to end before the radius of the circumnuclear starburst "ring", which is at 5--6 arcsec or around 400 parsec. Combining our near-infrared Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope adaptive optics results with traditional near-infrared and optical imaging, we show that spiral structure is present in this galaxy at spatia…
Observations with the Hubble Space Telescope reveal an irregular network of dust spiral arms in the nuclear region of the interacting disk galaxy NGC 2207. The spirals extend from ~50 pc to ~300 pc in galactocentric radius, with a projected width of ~20 pc. Radiative transfer calculations determine the gas properties of the spirals and the inner disk, and imply a factor of ~4 local gas compression in the spirals. The gas is not strongly self-gravitating, nor is there a nuclear bar, so the spirals could not have formed by the usual mechanisms applied to main galaxy disks. Instead, they may resu…
Asymmetry is a common trait in spiral galaxies and is particularly frequent among Magellanic spirals. To explore how morphological and kinematic asymmetry are affected by companion galaxies, we analyze neutral hydrogen observations of the interacting Magellanic spirals NGC 4618 and 4625. The analysis of the H I distribution revealed that about 10% of the total H I mass of NGC 4618 resides in a looping tidal structure that appears to wrap all the way around the galaxy. Through calculations based on derived H I profiles, we show that NGC 4618 and 4625 are no more asymmetric than non-interacting …
Here we report the detection, in Halpha emission, of a radial corrugation in the velocity field of the spiral galaxy NGC 5427. The central velocity of the Halpha line displays coherent, wavy-like variations in the vicinity of the spiral arms. The spectra along three different arm segments show that the maximum amplitude of the sinusoidal line variations are displaced some 500 pc from the central part of the spiral arms. The peak blueshifted velocities appear some 500 pc upstream the arm, whereas the peak redshifted velocities are located some 500 pc downstream the arm. This kinematical behavio…
We present stellar and ionized-gas velocity curves and velocity dispersion profiles for the Sa galaxies NGC 2179 and NGC 2775. Using their luminosity profiles and modeling both their stellar and gaseous kinematics, we have derived the mass distribution of the dark and the luminous matter. This unambiguously shows that, inside one disk length-scale R_D, the stellar bulge and disk account for the whole gravitating mass. The dark matter halo, likely present also at inner radii, becomes an important mass component only for R > 2 R_D. Giving the quantity and quality of the data, our results on thes…
We present neutral hydrogen observations of the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy NGC891 which show extended extra-planar emission up to distances of 15 kpc from the plane. 3D modeling of the galaxy shows that this emission comes from halo gas rotating more slowly than the gas in the disk.We derive the rotation curves of the gas above the plane and find a gradient in rotation velocity of -15 km/s/kpc. We also present preliminary results of a galactic fountain model applied to NGC891.
We analyse Keck spectra of 24 candidate globular clusters (GCs) associated with the spiral galaxy NGC 2683. We identify 19 bona fide GCs based on their recession velocities, of which 15 were suitable for stellar population analysis. Age and metallicity determinations reveal old ages in 14 out of 15 GCs. These old GCs exhibit age and metallicity distributions similar to that of the Milky Way GC system. One GC in NGC 2683 was found to exhibit an age of ~3 Gyr. The age, metallicity and alpha-element abundance of this centrally located GC are remarkably similar to the values found for the galactic…
Deep Effelsberg HI spectra of the one-armed, bright Virgo cluster spiral galaxy NGC 4254 are presented.Five different positions were observed in the 21 cm HI line with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope: one in the center and 4 located one HPBW to the NE, NW, SW, and SE, respectively, from the galaxy center. The spectra are compared to existing deep VLA observations, and the single dish and interferometric HI data are used to constrain a dynamical model which includes the effects of ram pressure. The peculiar, one-armed spiral pattern of NGC 4254 and its distorted and kinematically perturbed atomi…
We have detected diffuse soft X-ray emission (0.4-1 keV) from the disk of the spiral galaxy NGC 2403 with Chandra. This diffuse emission (with a total luminosity of 2.1 x 10^38 erg/s and a gas temperature of 2-8 x 10^6 K) is well separated from the numerous bright point sources. NGC 2403 is a luminous spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation. Recent HI observations have revealed an extended HI halo with anomalous velocities and a general inflow towards the central regions of the galaxy. This result and the present detection of a diffuse, hot X-ray emitting gas point at a very active di…
New high resolution, high sensitivity WSRT HI synthesis observations of the spiral galaxy NGC 3631 are presented. In the total atomic hydrogen map, the spiral arms are well distinguished from the interarm regions, while the sensitivity allows detection of HI in all but a few isolated regions of the areas between the spiral arms. Most of the atomic hydrogen is located within the optical disc, but the HI extends to some 1.5R_opt. The HI follows the spiral arms, and streaming motions of up to ~15 kms (projected) can be identified from the velocity field. Assuming a constant inclination angle of 1…
We have searched for corotations (CR) in three Southern grand design spiral galaxies: NGC 1365, NGC 1566 and NGC 2997. We have also introduced a method of quantifying errors in the phase diagram used to detect CR. We established the m=2 pattern CR at 12.1 kpc, 9.4 kpc and 7 kpc, for NGC 1365, NGC 1566 and NGC 2997, respectively. By using published rotation curves, we could determine spiral pattern angular speeds of 25.0 km/sec/kpc, 12.2 km/sec/kpc and 17.6 km/sec/kpc, respectively. A three armed component has been detected in NGC 2997, with the CR placed at 8.7 kpc with a pattern angular speed…
The structure of dust spirals in the nuclei of the SAab-type Liner galaxies NGC 4450 and NGC 4736 is studied using archival HST PC images. The spirals are typically only several hundredths of a magnitude fainter than the neighboring disks, so unsharp mask techniques are used to highlight them. The ambient extinction is estimated to be less than 0.1 mag from the intensity decrements of the dust features and from the spiral surface filling factor, which is about constant for all radii and sizes. The nuclear dust spirals differ from main-disk spirals in several respects: the nuclear spirals have …
We are conducting a search for supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with masses below 10^7 M_sun by looking for signs of extremely low-level nuclear activity in nearby galaxies that are not known to be AGNs. Our survey has the following characteristics: (a) X-ray selection using the Chandra X-ray Observatory, since x-rays are a ubiquitous feature of AGNs; (b) Emphasis on late-type spiral and dwarf galaxies, as the galaxies most likely to have low-mass SMBHs; (c) Use of multiwavelength data to verify the source is an AGN; and (d) Use of the highest angular resolution available for observations in x…
We present multiband photometric observations of three spiral galaxies selected in a sample suited for the study of young stellar groupings and their relationship with the parent galaxy and the galactic environment. Star forming regions have been identified using an objective technique based on a multivariate statistical analysis. Maps of young star groupings are given for each galaxy. The luminosity functions of the young star group populations show a remarkable similarity with a slope in the range -1.52 to -1.33 range. The size distributions peak around the classical 100pc value of the Local…
We present a study of the kinematics of the ionised gas in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2403 using deep long-slit spectra obtained with the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope. The data show the presence of a halo component of ionised gas that is rotating more slowly than the gas in the disk. The kinematics of this ionised halo gas is similar to that of the neutral halo gas. On small scales, broad line profiles (up to 300 km/s wide) indicate regions of fast outflows of ionised gas. We discuss these new results in the context of galactic fountain models.
We present UBVI surface photometry for 20.'5 X 20.'5 area of a late-type spiral galaxy NGC 300. In order to understand the morphological properties and luminosity distribution characteristics of NGC 300, we have derived isophotal maps, surface brightness profiles, ellipticity profiles, position angle profiles, and color profiles. By merging the I-band data of our surface brightness measurements with those of Boeker et al. (2002) based on Hubble Space Telescope observations, we have made combined I-band surface brightness profiles for the region of 0."02 < r < 500" and decomposed the profiles i…
We present new Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) observations of three spiral galaxies, NGC 4303, NGC 3310 and NGC 4258. The bright optical emission lines H$α$ $λ$ $6564 Å$, [NII] $λ$$λ$ $6549,6585 Å$ and [SII] $λ$$λ$ $ 6718,6732 Å$ were used to study the kinematics of the ionized gas in the nuclear region of each galaxy with a $\sim 0.07\arcsec$ spatial resolution. In NGC 3310, the observed gas kinematics is well matched by a circularly rotating disk model but we are only able to set an upper limit to the BH mass which, taking into account the allowed disk inclinations, varies in th…
We report evidence for nuclear stellar disks in 3 early-type spirals, namely NGC 1425, NGC 3898 and NGC 4698, revealed by WFPC2/F606W images out of a sample of 38 spiral galaxies, selected from the Hubble Space Telescope Data Archive. Adopting the photometric method introduced by Scorza & Bender we derived their central surface brightness and scalelength by assuming them to be infinitesimally thin exponential disks. No nuclear disk was found in barred galaxies or galaxies of Hubble type later than Sb. The external origin of the disk in NGC 4698 is strongly suggested by its orthogonal geometric…
We present high sensitivity radio polarimetric (VLA) observations of a galaxy with strong orbital resonances - NGC4736. The total radio intensity at 8.4GHz covers smoothly the whole galaxy bulge and reveals a distinct ring of radio emission closely related to the ring morphology visible in infrared, CO and Halpha emission. However, the magnetic field reveals a very coherent spiral pattern. The magnetic field vectors are crossing the inner starbursting ring, the dust lanes within the ring and other rather circularly shaped features visible in other gas traces. Either the magnetic field uncovers…
Investigation of gaseous and stellar kinematics and of broad-band VRI and narrow-band H-alpha and [NII]6583 images is performed for the central part (R < 4 kpc) of the regular spiral galaxy NGC 2841. We have found emission-line splitting at R < 20" and three-component LOSVD for the stars in the radius range 6" - 100". Morphological analysis reveals strong narrow shock fronts close to the major axis in the radius range of 30" - 50", a turn of the isophote major axis by 5 degrees and strongly negative Fourier coefficient a4 (boxy isophotes) in the radius range of 15" - 33". In principle, all the…
We present three-frequency VLA observations of the flocculent spiral galaxy NGC 4414 made in order to study the magnetic field structure in absence of strong density wave flows. NGC 4414 shows a regular spiral pattern of observed polarization B-vectors with a radial component comparable in strength to the azimuthal one. The average pitch angle of the magnetic field is about 20$\degr$, similar to galaxies with a well-defined spiral pattern. This provides support for field generation by a turbulent dynamo without significant ``contamination'' from streaming motions in spiral arms. While the stel…
NGC 6782 is an early-type barred spiral galaxy exhibiting a rich and complex morphology with multiple ring patterns. To provide a physical understanding of its structure and kinematical properties, two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations have been carried out. Numerical calculations reveal that the striking features in NGC 6782 can be reproduced provided that the gas flow is governed by the gravitational potential associated with a slowly rotating strong bar. In particular, the response of the gaseous disk to the bar potential leads to the excitation of spiral density waves at the inner Lin…
Spiral arm modulation in NGC 4062 (an optical flocculent) is detected for the first time; the Fourier spectra of NGC 4062 and NGC 5248 (a classic grand design in optical images) are almost identical.
We present a study of the globular cluster systems of two edge-on spiral galaxies, NGC4565 and NGC5907, from WFPC2 images in the F450W and F814W filters. The globular cluster systems of both galaxies appear to be similar to the Galactic globular cluster system. In particular, we derive total numbers of globular clusters of N_{GC}(4565)= 204+/-38 {+87}{-53} and N_{GC}(5907)=170+/-41 {+47}{-72} (where the first are statistical, the second potential systematic errors) for NGC4565 and NGC5907, respectively. This determination is based on a comparison to the Milky Way system, for which we adopt a t…
Using the B-I color index in the radial photometry of M51, applied to defined azimuthal sectors, we reveals asymmetries in the shape of the density pattern of the galactic arms. The anomalous shape is present only in the side close to the companion and not in the far side. Two more non-interacting check-spirals do not show similar behaviour. The anomalous sawtooth-like shape is similar to that produced by a progressive wave propagating in a preexisting density pattern. In this hypothesis we have to conclude that the galaxy M51 could be a spiral galaxy formerly, i.e. before the encounter with t…
HI observations with the VLA of the late-type barred galaxy NGC 925 show clear streaming motions along four spiral arms close to the minor axis. A transition from inward streaming to outward streaming is found, presumably marking the corotation resonance. The realm of inward streaming extends to very large radii, corresponding to 1.3R25 and 1.7 bar radii deprojected. This implies that most of the visible disk is inside corotation, although the HI disk extends beyond, at least to 2R25. As a result, either the bar and the spirals are rotating separately or the bar rotates very slowly compared to…
We have analyzed high velocity resolution HI synthesis observations of the nearly face-on Sc galaxy NGC 1232. The neutral gas distribution extends well beyond the optical extent of the galaxy. As expected, local peaks in the HI column density are associated with the spiral arms. Further, the HI column density drops precipitously near the center of the galaxy. Closed contours in the velocity field suggest either that the system is warped, or that the rotation curve declines. The velocity dispersion is approximately constant throughout the system, with a median value of 9.9 +/- 1.8 km/s. When co…
We present 21-cm line observations of the spiral galaxy NGC 4559, made with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. We have used them to study the HI distribution and kinematics, the relative amount and distribution of luminous and dark matter in this galaxy and, in particular, the presence of extra-planar gas. Our data do reveal the presence of such a component, in the form of a thick disk, with a mass of 5.9 x 10^8 Mo (one tenth of the total HI mass) and a mean rotation velocity 25-50 km/s lower than that of the thin disk. The extra-planar gas may be the result of galactic fountains but ac…
We report the gross properties of the velocity field of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 3367. The following values were found: inclination with respect to the plane of the sky, i=30 deg; position angle (PA) of receding semi major axis PA=51 and systemic velocity V(sys)=3032 km/s. Large velocity dispersion are observed of upt o 120 km/s in the nuclear region, of up to 70 km/s near the eastern bright sources just beyond the edge of the stellar bar where three spiral arms seem to start and in the western bright sources at about 10 kpc. Deviations from normal circular velocities are observed from all…
We examined offsets between HII regions and molecular clouds belonging to spiral arms of a late type spiral galaxy NGC 4254 (M99). We used a high resolution CO(1-0) image obtained by Nobeyama Millimeter Array (NMA) and an H-alpha image. We derived angular offsets (theta) in the galactic disk, and found that these offsets show a linear dependence on the angular rotation velocity of gas (Omega_G). This linear relation can be expressed by an equation: theta =(Omega_G - Omega_P) * t_{H-alpha}, where Omega_P and t_{H-alpha} are constant. Here, Omega_P corresponds to the pattern speed of spiral arms…
By using bidimensional spectral data obtained at the 6m telescope for the Virgo spirals NGC 4216 and NGC 4501, we have found chemically distinct metal-rich nuclei in these galaxies. Under the assumption of equal ages for the nuclear and bulge stellar populations, the metallicity difference between the nuclei and their environments in the galaxies is estimated as a factor of 2. But we have also found an age difference between the nucleus and the bulge in NGC 4216: age-metallicity disentangling on the diagrams (H-beta, Mgb), (H-beta, [MgFe]), and (H-beta, $<Fe>$) results in an age estimate for t…
The first results of an observational programme aimed at mapping a sample of face--on spiral galaxies in the NIR are presented. This paper shows the surface photometry of the first ten galaxies in the sample. The data were taken in the broad band $J$ (1.2 $μ$m) and $K_{s}$ (2.2 $μ$m) filters. The sources were selected mainly according to their size and brightness in order to suit the characteristics of the CAIN 2D NIR camera on the 1.5 m Carlos Sánchez Telescope (Tenerife, Spain). The primary scientific goal is to provide a comprehensive and uniform database of the main structural and photomet…
We have analysed SCUBA 850\mum images of the (near) face-on spiral galaxy NGC 6946, and found a tight correlation between dust thermal emission and molecular gas. The map of visual optical depth relates well to the distribution of neutral gas (HI+H2) and implies a global gas-to-dust ratio of 90. There is no significant radial variation of this ratio: this can be understood, since the gas content is dominated by far by the molecular gas. The latter is estimated through the CO emission tracer, which is itself dependent on metallicity, similarly to dust emission. By comparing the radial profile o…
Deep Chandra exposures reveal the presence of diffuse X-ray emission with a luminosity of 1.3x10^{39} ergs s^{-1} from the spiral galaxy NGC 3184. This appears to be truly diffuse thermal emission distinct from the low-luminosity LMXB emission. While the unresolved emission from older LMXBs is more uniformly distributed across the galaxy, the diffuse X-ray emission is concentrated in areas of younger stellar populations and star forming regions. The surface brightness of the diffuse emission over the spiral arms is five times greater than in off-arm regions, and eight times brighter in H II re…
We have obtained deep surface photometry of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4244. Our data reliably reach 27.5 R magnitude arcsec^{-2}, a significant improvement on our earlier deep CCD surface photometry of other galaxies. NGC 4244 is a nearby Scd galaxy whose total luminosity is approximately one magnitude fainter than the peak of the Sc luminosity function. We find that it has a simple structure: a single exponential disk, with a scale height h_Z = 246 +/- 2 pc, a scale length h_R = 1.84 +/- 0.02 kpc and a disk cutoff at a radius R(max) = 10.0 kpc (5.4 scale lengths). We confirm a strong cuto…
The superimposed pair of spiral galaxies NGC 3314 offers a unique opportunity to trace the dust properties in a spiral galaxy. We analyze multicolor HST imaging, supported by ground-based near-IR imaging and fiber-array spectroscopy to measure dust extinction in the foreground Sc galaxy NGC 3314A, which is backlit by the Sb system NGC 3314B. We can measure extinctions over a wide range of galactocentric radii in the foreground galaxy, from 0.4-4.5 kpc. In the outer disk, the extinction is strongly localized in discrete dust lanes. These dust features show an extinction curve with a slope close…
We discuss new, high sensitivity HI observations of the spiral galaxy NGC2403 which show extended emission at anomalous velocities with respect to the `cold' disk. This `anomalous' gas component (~1/10 of the total HI mass) is probably located in the region of the halo and rotates more slowly (~20-50 km/s) than the gas in the disk. Moreover, it shows a distortion in the velocity field that we interpret as a large-scale radial motion (10-20 km/s inflow) towards the centre of the galaxy. The most likely explanation for its origin and kinematics seems to be that of a galactic fountain. There is, …
Far-infrared (IR) images of the nearby Sb galaxy NGC2841 and the Sc galaxy NGC2976 at wavelengths of 65, 90, 140, and 160 um have been obtained with the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) onboard AKARI. Both galaxies reveal similar morphologies of dust rings. They are, however, significantly different in the dust temperature: a cold (21 K) ring for NGC2841 and a warm (30 K) ring for NGC2976, which presumably reflects the difference in the origin of the ring structure for the different Hubble type of the galaxy. In addition to the dust ring structure, a warm dust component is detected from the central…
We present some preliminary results from new Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of the nearby barred spiral galaxy NGC1672. It shows dramatic nuclear and extra-nuclear star formation activity, including starburst regions located near each end of its strong bar, both of which host ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). With the new high-spatial-resolution Chandra imaging, we show for the first time that NGC1672 possesses a faint ($L(X)~10^39 erg/s), hard central X-ray source surrounded by an X-ray bright circumnuclear starburst ring that dominates the X-ray emission in the region. The centr…
The results of $H_α$ and [NII]$λ6583$ observations of the spiral galaxy NGC 1084 at the SAO 6m telescope with a Fabry-Perot interferometer are presented. The complex structure of the emission line profile has revealed the presence of giant star formation regions (``spur'') in the NE part of the galaxy. In this region the $H_α$ line shows two distinct components, with line-of-sight velocity differences of $\pm(100-150)\km$. The first component corresponds to normal circular rotation. The second velocity component may be a signature of non-circular motions of the ionized gas in shock wave fronts…
We report the discovery of gas streaming motions along nuclear spiral arms towards the LINER nucleus of the galaxy NGC 6951. The observations, obtained using the GMOS integral field spectrograph on the Gemini North telescope, yielded maps of the flux distributions and gas kinematics in the Halpha, [NII]6584 and [SII]6717,31 emission lines of the inner 7x5 arcsec^2 of the galaxy. This region includes a circumnuclear star-forming ring with radius 500pc, a nuclear spiral inside the ring and the LINER nucleus. The kinematics of the ionized gas is dominated by rotation, but subtraction of a kinemat…
Using the Effelsberg radio telescope at 4.85GHz and 8.35 GHz we discovered large symmetric lobes of polarized radio emission around the strongly HI deficient Virgo cluster spiral galaxy NGC4569. These lobes extend up to 24 kpc from the galactic disk. Our observations were complemented by 1.4 GHz continuum emission from existing HI observations. This is the first time that such huge radio continuum lobes are observed in a cluster spiral galaxy. The eastern lobe seems detached and has a flat spectrum typical for in-situ cosmic ray electron acceleration. The western lobe is diffuse and possesses …
The Sb galaxy NGC 2841 was observed at the 6 m telescope of SAO RAS with the Multi-Pupil Field Spectrograph and at the 1 m telescope of SAO RAS with the long-slit spectrograph. An unresolved nucleus of NGC 2841 is shown to be chemically decoupled both in magnesium and in iron with abundance break estimates of 0.36 dex for Mg and 0.6 dex for Fe; an abundance gradient in the bulge is seen only in the magnesium index and is typical for early-type disk galaxies. The rotation axis of the nuclear ionized gas in NGC 2841 is orthogonal to that of the central stellar population; an existence of a bulge…
We use the catalogue of HII regions obtained from a high quality continuum-subtracted H$α$ image of the grand design spiral galaxy NGC 7479, to construct the luminosity function (LF) for the HII regions (over 1000) of the whole galaxy. Although its slope is within the published range for spirals of the same morphological type, the unusually strong star formation along the intense bar of NGC 7479 prompted us to analyze separately the HII regions in the bar and in the disc. We have calculated the physical properties of a group of HII regions in the bar and in the disc selected for their regular …
