We use a new, conformally-invariant method of analysis to test incomplete null geodesics approaching the singularity in a model of an evaporating black hole for the possibility of extensions of the conformal metric. In general, a local conformal extension is possible from the future but not from the past.
We introduce first a new road to quantize the Schwarzschild black hole. Then we find that the ground state or relic of the quantum evaporating black hole can be identified as dark matter.
In this paper, we study the BSW process of the slowly evaporating charged black hole. It can be found that the BSW process will also arise near black hole horizon when the evaporation of charged black hole is very slow. But now the background black hole does not have to be an extremal black hole, and it will be approximately an extremal black hole unless it is nearly a huge stationary black hole.
We construct and discuss the form of the (effective) spacetime geometry inside a black hole undergoing a quantum transition to a white hole, taking into account the back-reaction of the component of the Hawking radiation falling into the hole.
Spherically symmetric Black Holes of the Vaidya type are examined in an asymptotically de Sitter, higher dimensional spacetime. The various horizons are located. The structure and dynamics of such horizons are studied.
It is argued that a characteristic length may be associated with the entropic state of a spherically symmetric black hole in the cosmological context. This length is much smaller than the Schwarzschild-radius of a black hole and may act as a regulator of arbitrarily high frequencies apparently entering the usual derivation of Hawking's radiation.
We offer a mathematically rigorous basis for the widely held suspicion that full black hole evaporation is in tension with predictability. Based on conditions expressing the global causal structure of evaporating black hole spacetimes, we prove two theorems in Lorentzian geometry showing that such spacetimes either fail to be causally simple or fail to be causally continuous. These theorems, when combined with recent results \cite{AM} on the causal structure of spacetimes with timelike boundary, bear significantly on the question of whether these spacetimes permit for a predictable evolution.
The radial motion of photons emitted near the horizon of a black hole that evaporates at a steady rate is examined. The space-time of the black hole is generated using non-orthogonal coordinates. It is shown that some photons that are initially drawn towards the singularity can escape falling into the horizon. The behaviors of various outgoing and ingoing photons are clearly demonstrated through the use of a Penrose diagram.
We consider how the mass of the black hole decreases by the Hawking radiation in the Vaidya spacetime, using the concept of dynamical horizon equation, proposed by Ashtekar and Krishnan. Using the formula for the change of the dynamical horizon, we derive an equation for the mass incorporating the Hawking radiation. It is shown that final state is the Minkowski spacetime in our particular model.
Using Visser's semi-analytical model for the stress-energy tensor corresponding to the conformally coupled massless scalar field in the Unruh vacuum, we examine, by explicitly evaluating the relevant integrals over half-complete geodesics, the averaged weak (AWEC) and averaged null (ANEC) energy conditions along with Ford-Roman quantum inequality-type restrictions on negative energy in the context of four dimensional evaporating black hole backgrounds. We find that in all cases where the averaged energy conditions fail, there exist quantum inequality bounds on the magnitude and duration of neg…
A Penrose diagram is constructed for an example black hole that evaporates at a steady rate as measured by a distant observer, until the mass vanishes, yielding a final state Minkowski space-time. Coordinate dependencies of significant features, such as the horizon and coordinate anomalies, are clearly demonstrated on the diagram. The large-scale causal structure of the space-time is briefly discussed.
We study the evaporation process of a 2D black hole in thermal equilibrium when the ingoing radiation is switched off suddenly. We also introduce global symmetries of generic 2D dilaton gravity models which generalize the extra symmetry of the CGHS model.
A class of semi-linear hyperbolic systems in 1+1 dimensions was investigated several years ago by Ori and Gorbonos. This class, to which we shall refer as "flux-conserving systems", exhibits a variety of interesting mathematical properties. Here we demonstrate how the formalism of flux-conserving systems can be applied to the problem of black-hole evaporation in 1+1-dimensions. More specifically, we show how the semiclassical CGHS field equations may be approximated by a certain flux-conserving system.
A simple model for an evaporating non-rotating black hole is considered, employing a global time that does not become singular at the putative horizon. The dynamics of a test particle falling radially towards the center of the black hole is then investigated. Contrary to a previous approach, we find that the particle may pass the Schwarzschild radius before the black hole has gone. Backreaction effects of Hawking radiation on the space-time metric are not considered, rather a purely kinematical point of view is taken here. The importance of choosing an appropriate time coordinate when describi…
We study some quantum mechanical aspects of dynamical black holes where the Vaidya metric is used as a model representing evaporating black holes. It is shown that in this model the Wheeler-DeWitt equation is solvable in whole region of spacetime, provided that one considers the ingoing (or outgoing) Vaidya metric and selects a suitable coordinate frame. This wave function has curious features in that near the curvature singularity it oscillates violently owing to large quantum effects while in the other regions the wave function exhibits a rather benign and completely regular behavior. The ge…
A test particle falling into a classical black hole crosses the event horizon and ends up in the singularity within finite eigentime. In the `more realistic' case of a `classical' evaporating black hole, an observer falling onto a black hole observes a sudden evaporation of the hole. This illustrates the fact that the discussion of the classical process commonly found in the literature may become obsolete when the black hole has a finite lifetime. The situation is basically the same for more complex cases, e.g. where a particle collides with two merging black holes. It should be pointed out th…
In this work we apply the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation of quantum mechanics to the quantized spherically symmetric black-hole coupled to a massless scalar field. The wave-functional used was first obtained by Tomimatsu using the standard ADM quantization and a gauge that places the observer close to the black-hole horizon. Using the causal interpretation, we compute quantum trajectories determined by the initial conditions. We show that the quantum trajectories for the black-hole mass can either increase or decrease with time. The quantum trajectories that show increasing mass represent the …
According to recent theoretical developments, it might be possible to produce mini black holes in the high energy experiments in the LHC at CERN. We propose here a model based on the $n$-dimensional Vaidya metric in double null coordinates for these decaying black holes. The associated quasinormal modes are considered. It is shown that only in the very last instants of the evaporation process the stationary regime for the quasinormal modes is broken, implying specific power spectra for the perturbations around these mini black-holes. From scattered fields one could recover, in principle, the b…
We study an $N + 1$ dimensional generalization of the Schwarzschild black hole from the quantum mechanical viewpoint. It is shown that the mass loss rate of this higher dimensional black hole due to the black hole radiation is proportional to $1 \over r^{N-1}$ where $r$ is the radial coordinate. This fact implies that except in four dimensions the quantum formalism developed in this letter gives a different result with respect to the mass loss rate from the semiclassical formalism where the Stefan-Bolzmann formula for a blackbody radiation is used. As shown previously in the study of the four …
We study Hawking radiation on a Vaidya space-time with a gravitational collapse followed by evaporation. The collapsing body is a null thin-shell and the evaporation is induced by a negative energy collapsing null-shell. This mimics the back-reaction to the Hawking radiation. Using Hawking's original method of Bogoliubov transformations we characterize the radiated spectrum as dominated by a thermal emission with an increasing effective temperature. We compute this time dependent temperature and find numerical agreement with results obtained by other techniques. The known divergences at the ev…
We show that the apparent horizon and the region near $r=0$ of an evaporating charged, rotating black hole are timelike. It then follows that for black holes in nature, which invariably have some rotation, have a channel, via which classical or quantum information can escape to the outside, while the black hole shrinks in size. We discuss implications for the information loss problem.
One might expect far away from physical black holes that quantum field quantisation performed in Minkowski space is a good approximation. Indeed, all experimental tests in particle colliders reveal no deviations so far. Nevertheless, the black holes should leave certain imprints of their presence in quantum processes. In this paper, we shall discuss several local imprints of small, primordial evaporating black holes in quantum electrodynamics in the weak gravity regime. Physically this can be interpreted as being macroscopic manifestations of vacuum fluctuations.
This paper delineates the first steps in a systematic quantitative study of the spacetime fluctuations induced by quantum fields in an evaporating black hole. We explain how the stochastic gravity formalism can be a useful tool for that purpose within a low-energy effective field theory approach to quantum gravity. As an explicit example we apply it to the study of the spherically-symmetric sector of metric perturbations around an evaporating black hole background geometry. For macroscopic black holes we find that those fluctuations grow and eventually become important when considering suffici…
We investigate the inner structure of an evaporating charged black hole, within the context of semiclassical dilaton gravity in two dimensions. The matter fields are charged, allowing the evaporation of both the mass and charge of the black hole. We find that the semiclassical effects cause the inner horizon to expand (by a finite factor), rather than to shrink to a point singularity. Although this expansion is a quantum phenomenon, the overall expansion factor is found to be independent of the magnitude of the quantum terms in the effective theory.
It is logically possible that regularly evaporating black holes exist in nature. In fact, the prevalent theoretical view is that these are indeed the real objects behind the curtain in astrophysical scenarios. There are several proposals for regularizing the classical singularity of black holes so that their formation and evaporation do not lead to information-loss problems. One characteristic is shared by most of these proposals: these regularly evaporating black holes present long-lived trapping horizons, with absolutely enormous evaporation lifetimes in whatever measure. Guided by the disco…
Callan, Giddings, Harvey and Strominger (CGHS) previously introduced a two-dimensional semiclassical model of gravity coupled to a dilaton and to matter fields. Their model yields a system of field equations which may describe the formation of a black hole in gravitational collapse as well as its subsequent evaporation. Here we present an approximate analytical solution to the semiclassical CGHS field equations. This solution is constructed using the recently-introduced formalism of flux-conserving hyperbolic systems. We also explore the asymptotic behavior at the horizon of the evaporating bl…
A Kaluza-Klein model, with a matter source associated with Hawking radiation from an evaporating black hole, is used to obtain a simple form for the radion effective potential. The environmental effect generally causes a matter-induced shift of the radion vacuum, resulting in the formation of a radion cloud around the hole. There is an albedo due to the radion cloud, with an energy dependent reflection coefficient that depends upon the size of the extra dimensions and the temperature of the hole.
This paper delineates the first steps in a systematic quantitative study of the spacetime fluctuations induced by quantum fields in an evaporating black hole under the stochastic gravity program. The central object of interest is the noise kernel, which is the symmetrized two-point quantum correlation function of the stress tensor operator. As a concrete example we apply it to the study of the spherically-symmetric sector of metric perturbations around an evaporating black hole background geometry. For macroscopic black holes we find that those fluctuations grow and eventually become important…
A careful examination of the fundamentals of electromagnetic theory shows that due to the underlying mathematical assumptions required for Stokes' Theorem, global charge conservation cannot be guaranteed in topologically non-trivial spacetimes. However, in order to break the charge conservation mechanism we must also allow the electromagnetic excitation fields D, H to possess a gauge freedom, just as the electromagnetic scalar and vector potentials phi and A do. This has implications for the treatment of electromagnetism in spacetimes where black holes both form and then evaporate, as well as …
We discuss a variety of bremsstrahlung processes associated with charged particles emitted by evaporating black holes. We show that such particles produce a negligible number of bremsstrahlung photons from their scattering off each other, though at low frequencies inner bremsstrahlung photons dominate over the direct Hawking emission of photons. This analysis and the further analysis of the accompanying paper invalidate Heckler's claim that sufficiently hot evaporating black holes form QED photospheres.
By extending the charged Vaidya metric to cover all of spacetime, we obtain a Penrose diagram for the formation and evaporation of a charged black hole. In this construction, the singularity is time-like. The entire spacetime can be predicted from initial conditions if boundary conditions at the singularity are known.
We give a quantum circuit interpretation of evaporating black hole geometry. We make an analogy between the appearance of island for evaporating black hole and the transition from two-sided to one-sided black hole in the familiar example of perturbed thermofield double. If Alice perturbs thermofield double and waits for scrambling time, she will have a one-sided black hole with interior of her own. We argue that by similar mechanism the radiation gets access to the interior (island forms) after Page time. The growth of the island happens as a result of the constant transitions from two-sided t…
In classical gravity, nothing can escape from a black hole, not even light. In particular, this happens for stationary black holes because their horizons are null. We show, on the other hand, that the apparent horizon and the region near r = 0 of an evaporating charged, rotating black hole are both timelike. This implies that there exists a channel, via which classical or quantum information can escape to the outside, as the black hole evaporates. Since astrophysical black holes have at least some rotation, our results apply to all black holes in nature. We discuss the implications of our resu…
We show that the canonical purification of an evaporating black hole after the Page time consists of a short, connected, Lorentzian wormhole between two asymptotic boundaries, one of which is unitarily related to the radiation. This provides a quantitative and general realization of the predictions of ER=EPR in an evaporating black hole after the Page time; this further gives a standard AdS/CFT calculation of the entropy of the radiation (without modifications of the homology constraint). Before the Page time, the canonical purification consists of two disconnected, semiclassical black holes. …
We obtain the holographic complexity of an evaporating black hole in the semi-classical RST model of two-dimensional dilaton gravity, using a volume prescription that takes into account the higher-dimensional origin of the model. For classical black holes, we recover the expected late time behaviour of the complexity, but new features arise at the semi-classical level. By considering the volume inside the stretched horizon of the evolving black hole, we obtain sensible results for the rate of growth of the complexity, with an early onset of order the black hole scrambling time followed by an e…
We present a paradox for evaporating black holes, which is common in most schemes trying to avoid the firewall by decoupling early and late radiation. At the late stage of the black hole evaporation, the decoupling between early and late radiation can not be realized because the black hole has a very small coarse-grained entropy, then we are faced with the firewall again. We call the problem hair-loss paradox as a pun on losing black hole soft hair during the black hole evaporation and the situation that the information paradox has put so much pressure on researchers.
We look into the inner structure of a two-dimensional dilatonic evaporating black hole. We establish and employ the homogenous approximation for the black-hole interior. The field equations admit two types of singularities, and their local asymptotic structure is investigated. One of these singularities is found to develop, as a spacelike singularity, inside the black hole. We then study the internal structure of the evaporating black hole from the horizon to the singularity.
Vilkovisky has claimed to have solved the black hole backreaction problem and finds that black holes lose only ten percent of their mass to Hawking radiation before evaporation ceases. We examine the implications of this scenario for cold dark matter, assuming that primordial black holes are created during the reheating period after inflation. The mass spectrum is expected to be dominated by 10-gram black holes. Nucleosynthesis constraints and the requirement that the earth presently exist do not come close to ruling out such black holes as dark matter candidates. They also evade the demand th…
The classical singularity theorems of General Relativity rely on energy conditions that are easily violated by quantum fields. Here, we provide motivation for an energy condition obeyed in semiclassical gravity: the smeared null energy condition (SNEC), a proposed bound on the weighted average of the null energy along a finite portion of a null geodesic. Using SNEC as an assumption we proceed to prove a singularity theorem. This theorem extends the Penrose singularity theorem to semiclassical gravity and has interesting applications to evaporating black holes.
In this paper the averaged weak (AWEC) and averaged null (ANEC) energy conditions, together with uncertainty principle-type restrictions on negative energy (``quantum inequalities''), are examined in the context of evaporating black hole backgrounds in both two and four dimensions. In particular, integrals over only half-geodesics are studied. We determine the regions of the spacetime in which the averaged energy conditions are violated. In all cases where these conditions fail, there appear to be quantum inequalities which bound the magnitude and extent of the negative energy, and hence the d…

We employ a recently developed mode-sum regularization method to compute the renormalized stress-energy tensor of a quantum field in the Kerr background metric (describing a stationary spinning black hole). More specifically, we consider a minimally-coupled massless scalar field in the Unruh vacuum state, the quantum state corresponding to an evaporating black hole. The computation is done here for the case $a=0.7M$, using two different variants of the method: $t$-splitting and $φ$-splitting, yielding good agreement between the two (in the domain where both are applicable). We briefly discuss …
In this paper, we discuss the Higgs vacuum stability around evaporating black holes. We provide a new approach to investigate the false vacuum decay around the black hole and clearly show how vacuum fluctuations of the Higgs induce a gravitational collapse of the vacuum. Furthermore, we point out that the backreaction of the Hawking radiation can not be ignored and the gravitational vacuum decay is exponentially suppressed. However, a large number of the evaporating (or evaporated) primordial black holes threaten the existence of the Universe and we obtain a new upper bound on the evaporating …
We study massless scalar theory with the quartic self-interacting term far away from and near to evaporating and spherically symmetric black hole. We propose a principle of how to define the physical notion of particle in curved space-time. Employing this definition, we compute one-loop correction to the self-energy and coupling constant of the scalar field near the horizon in the freely-falling frame. We find that the coupling constant becomes slightly stronger near to the horizon. We also find that the term in the 2-point function that is (partially) responsible for the black-hole evaporatio…
We study a partially fine-grained description of an evaporating black hole by introducing an open baby universe with a boundary. Since the Page's calculation of the entropy of Hawking radiation involves an ensemble average over a class of states, one can formally obtain a fine-grained state by purifying this setup. For AdS black holes with a holographic dual, this purification amounts to introducing an additional boundary (i.e., baby universe) and then connecting it to the original black hole through an Einstein-Rosen bridge. We uncover several details of this setup. As applications, we briefl…
We examine the averaged null energy condition~(ANEC) for strongly coupled fields, along the event horizon of an evaporating black hole by using the AdS/CFT duality. First, we consider a holographic model of a $3$-dimensional evaporating black hole with a perturbed 4-dimensional black droplet geometry as the bulk dual, and investigate how negative energy flux going into the boundary black hole horizon appears. We show that the ingoing negative energy flux always appears at the boundary black hole horizon when the horizon area decreases. Second, we test the ANEC in a holographic model of a $4$-d…
This letter aims at showing that the observation of evaporating black holes should allow distinguishing between the usual Hawking behavior and Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) expectations. We present a full Monte-Carlo simulation of the evaporation in LQG and statistical tests that discriminate between competing models. We conclude that contrarily to what was commonly thought, the discreteness of the area in LQG leads to characteristic features that qualify evaporating black holes as objects that could reveal quantum gravity footprints.
Assuming that the vacuum energy-momentum tensor is not exceptionally large, we consider 4D evaporating black holes with spherical symmetry and evaluate the proper distance $ΔL$ between the time-like apparent horizon and the surface of the collapsing matter after it has entered the apparent horizon. We show that $ΔL$ can never be larger than $\mathcal{O}(n^{3/2}\ell_p)$ when the black hole is evaporated to $1/n$ of its initial mass, as long as $n \ll a^{2/3}/\ell_p^{2/3}$ (where $a$ is the Schwarzschild radius and $\ell_p$ is the Planck length). For example, the distance between the matter and …
We study a manifestly unitary formulation of 2d dilaton quantum gravity based on the reduced phase space quantization. The spacetime metric can be expanded in a formal power series of the matter energy-momentum tensor operator. This expansion can be used for calculating the quantum corrections to the classical black hole metric by evaluating the expectation value of the metric operator in an appropriate class of the physical states. When the normal ordering in the metric operator is chosen to be with respect to Kruskal vacuum, the lowest order semiclassical metric is exactly the one-loop effec…
Hiscock and Weems showed that there is an attractor behavior in the evolution of asymptotically flat Reissner-Nordström black hole under Hawking evaporation. If the initial charge-to-mass ratio $Q/M$ of the black hole is relatively small, then the ratio first increases until the black hole hits the attractor, and then starts to discharge towards the Schwarzschild limit. Sufficiently charged black holes, on the other hand, simply discharge steadily towards the Schwarzschild limit. In this work we further investigate the nature of the attractor, and found that it is characterized by the mass los…
In this paper we investigate the effects of gravitational backreaction for the late time Hawking radiation of evaporating near-extremal black holes. This problem can be studied within the framework of an effective one-loop solvable model on AdS_2. We find that the Hawking flux goes down exponentially and it is proportional to a parameter which depends on details of the collapsing matter. This result seems to suggest that the information of the initial state is not lost and that the boundary of AdS_2 acts, at least at late times, as a sort of stretched horizon in the Reissner-Nordstrom spacetim…
We study a thermo-field double type entangle state on two disjoint gravitating universes, say A and B, with an eternal black hole on each. As was shown previously, its entanglement entropy of the universe A is computed by the generalized entropy on a new spacetime constructed by suitably gluing the black holes on A and B. We study such spacetime gluings when universes are asymptotically flat and AdS cases, especially when the masses of these black holes are different. We also clarify the rule to construct such a glued spacetime in more general settings from the gravitational path integral view…
We present an approximate time-dependent metric in ingoing Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates for an evaporating nonrotating black hole as a first-order perturbation of the Schwarzschild metric, using the linearized back reaction from a realistic approximation to the stress-energy tensor for the Hawking radiation in the Unruh quantum state.
