DFT calculations have been used to provide insights into the origin of the colossal positive and negative thermal expansion in Ag$_3$[Co(CN)$_6]$. The results confirm that the positive expansion within the trigonal basal plane and the negative expansion in the orthogonal direction are coupled due to the existence of a network defined by nearly-rigid bonds within the chains of Co--C--N--Ag--N--C--Co linkages. The origin of the colossal values of the coefficients of thermal expansion arise from an extremely shallow energy surface that allows a flexing of the structure with small energy cost. The thermal expansion can be achieved with a modest value of the overall Grüneisen parameter. The energy surface is so shallow that we need to incorporate a small empirical dispersive interaction to give ground-state lattice parameters that match experimental values at low temperature. We compare the results with DFT calculations on two isostructural systems: H$_3$[Co(CN)$_6$], which is known to have much smaller values of the coefficients of thermal expansion, and Au$_3$[Co(CN)$_6$], which has not yet been synthesised but which is predicted by our calculations to be another candidate material for showing colossal positive and negative thermal expansion.
The Fermi-surfaces and Elliott-Yafet spin-mixing parameter (EYP) of several elemental metals are studied by \emph{ab initio} calculations. We focus first on the anisotropy of the EYP as a function of the direction of the spin-quantization axis [Phys.~Rev.~Lett.\ \textbf{109}, 236603 (2012)]. We analyze in detail the origin of the gigantic anisotropy in $5d$ hcp metals as compared to $5d$ cubic metals by band-structure calculations and discuss the stability of our results against an applied magnetic field. We further present calculations of light (4$d$ and 3$d$) hcp crystals, where we find a hu…
Diamond is one of the most studied materials because of its unique combination of remarkable electrical, mechanical, thermal and optical properties. Using a fully self-consistent ab initio theory of coupled electron-phonon transport, we reveal another striking behavior: a huge drag enhancement of the thermopower of lightly doped diamond. Thermopower values of around 100,000 microvolts per Kelvin are found at 100 K, significantly exceeding the highest previously measured value in the correlated metal FeSb2, and occurring at much higher temperatures. The enormous thermopower in diamond arises pr…
Recently colossal positive volume thermal expansion has been found in the framework compounds Ag3Co(CN)6 and Ag3Fe(CN)6. Phonon spectra have been measured using the inelastic neutron scattering technique as a function of temperature and pressure. The data has been analyzed using ab-initio calculations. We find that the bonding is very similar in both compounds. At ambient pressure modes in the intermediate frequency part of the vibrational spectra in the Co compound are shifted to slightly higher energies as compared to the Fe compound. The temperature dependence of the phonon spectra gives ev…
Magnetic, electric and structural properties of La$_{0.96-y}$Nd$_y$K$_{0.04}$MnO$_{3+δ}$ with 0$\leq y \leq$0.4 have been studied experimentally. A disordered magnetic state is formed as La is substituted by Nd, reflecting the competition between ferromagnetic (FM) double exchange and antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions. Key structural parameters are identified and correlated with changes in magnetic and electric properties. By application of a large magnetic field, spin disorder scattering is removed, creating a new magnetoresistance peak at a temperature lower than the first near-$T…
The dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4O12, a material showing colossal values of the dielectric constant, were investigated in a broad temperature and frequency range extending up to 1.3 GHz. A detailed equivalent circuit analysis of the results and two crucial experiments, employing different types of contacts and varying sample thickness, provide clear evidence that the apparently high values of the dielectric constant in CaCu3Ti4O12 are non-intrinsic and due to electrode polarization effects. The intrinsic properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 are characterized by charge transport via hopping of localiz…
We report the detailed study of dielectric response of Pr(0.6)Ca(0.4)MnO(3) (PCMO), member of manganite family showing colossal magnetoresistance. Measurements have been performed on four polycrystalline samples and four single crystals, allowing us to compare and extract the essence of dielectric response in the material. High frequency dielectric function is found to be 30, as expected for the perovskite material. Dielectric relaxation is found in frequency window of 20Hz-1MHz at temperatures of 50-200K that yields to colossal low-frequency dielectric function, i.e. static dielectric constan…
Using {\it ab initio} band structure calculations and symmetry arguments, we show that the magnetic property of Ga$_{1-x}$Gd$_x$N is drastically different from TM-doped GaN. The coupling between Gd atoms in the alloy is antiferromagnetic, but the ferromagnetic phase can be stabilized by introducing electrons. Furthermore, we propose a model that may explain the recently observed colossal magnetic moments in this system, based on the polarization of donor electrons.
A detailed investigation of ZnCr2Se4 is presented which is dominated by strong ferromagnetic exchange but orders antiferromagnetically at T_N = 21 K. Specific heat C and thermal expansion Delta L/L exhibit sharp first-order anomalies at the antiferromagnetic transition. T_N is strongly reduced and shifted to lower temperatures by external magnetic fields and finally is fully suppressed suggesting a field induced quantum critical behavior close to 60 kOe. Delta L/L(T) is unusually large and exhibits negative thermal expansion below 75 K down to T_N indicating strong frustration of the lattice. …
How to realize applicably appreciated functionalities based on the coupling between charge and spin degrees of freedom is still a challenge in the field of spintronics. For example, anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) effect is utilized to read out the information stored by various magnetic structures, which usually originates from atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). However, the application of AMR in antiferromagnet-based spintronics is still hindered by rather small AMR value. Here, we discover a colossal AMR effect during the field-induced metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) in a nearly Dirac…
The magnetoelectric coupling, i.e., cross-correlation between electric and magnetic orders, is a very desirable property to combine functionalities of materials for next-generation switchable devices. Multiferroics with spin-driven ferroelectricity presents such a mutual interaction concomitant with magneto- and electro-active excitations called electromagnons. TbMnO3 is a paradigmatic material in which two electromagnons have been observed in the cycloidal magnetic phase. However, their observation in TbMnO3 is restricted to the cycloidal spin phase and magnetic ground states that can support…
Ab initio simulations that account for nuclear quantum effects have been used to examine the order-disorder transition in squaric acid, a prototypical H-bonded antiferroelectric crystal. Our simulations reproduce the >100 K difference in transition temperature observed upon deuteration as well as the strong geometrical isotope effect observed on intermolecular separations within the crystal. We find that collective transfer of protons along the H-bonding chains - facilitated by quantum mechanical tunneling - is critical to the order-disorder transition and the geometrical isotope effect. This …
We report on low-energy electronic structure and electronic correlations of K$_{0.65}$RhO$_2$, studied using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) technique and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We observe a highly correlated hole pocket on the Fermi surface. We further notice that the correlations are momentum dependent. Most importantly, two $kinks$ at binding energies of 75 meV and 195 meV have been observed from the band dispersion in the vicinity of the Fermi level. While the low energy $kink$ at 75 meV can be understood as a result of the electron-…
We report the observation of colossal positive magnetoresistance (MR) in single crystalline, high mobility TaAs2 semimetal. The excellent fit of MR by a single quadratic function of the magnetic field B over a wide temperature range (T = 2-300 K) suggests the semiclassical nature of the MR. The measurements of Hall effect and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, as well as band structure calculations suggest that the giant MR originates from the nearly perfectly compensated electrons and holes in TaAs2. The quadratic MR can even exceed 1,200,000% at B = 9 T and T = 2 K, which is one of the largest …
We develop a new first-principles approach to predict and understand rates of singlet fission with an ab initio Green's-function formalism based on many-body perturbation theory. Starting with singlet and triplet excitons computed from a GW plus Bethe-Salpeter equation approach, we calculate the exciton--bi-exciton coupling to lowest order in the Coulomb interaction, assuming a final state consisting of two non-interacting spin-correlated triplets with finite center-of-mass momentum. For crystalline pentacene, symmetries dictate that the only purely Coulombic fission decay from a bright single…
The experimental unexpected large Seebeck coefficient in SrTiO3 (STO) cannot be reproduced theoretically by the conventional Bloch-Boltzmann transport with electron-phonon coupling calculated perturbatively, indicating a failure of Fermi liquid picture in STO and ill-treatment of polaronic states. Starting from many-body interaction picture, the polaronic states can be precisely described by the method of cumulant expansion of retarded Green's function. By applying Kubo-Greenwood method, we found that the mysterious Seebeck coefficient can be fully described by a combination of polarons and Fe…
We calculate the photoemission spectra of suspended and epitaxial doped graphene using an ab initio cumulant expansion of the Green's function based on the GW self-energy. Our results are compared to experiment and to standard GW calculations. For doped graphene on a silicon carbide substrate, we find, in contrast to earlier calculations, that the spectral function from GW only does not reproduce experimental satellite properties. However, ab initio GW plus cumulant theory combined with an accurate description of the substrate screening results in good agreement with experiment, but gives no p…
We report a series of magnetic and transport measurements on high-quality single crystal samples of colossal magnetoresistive manganites, La_{0.7} Ca_{0.3} Mn O_3 and Pr_{0.7} Sr_{0.3} Mn O_3. 1 % Fe doping allows a Moessbauer spectroscopy study, which shows (i) unusual line broadening within the ferromagnetic phase and (ii) a coexistence of ferro- and paramagnetic contributions in a region, T_1<T<T_2, around the Curie point T_C. In the case of Pr_{0.7} Sr_{0.3} Mn O_3, the resistivity peak occurs at a considerably higher temperature, T_{MI}>T_2. This shows that phase separation into metallic …
We study the origin of the large thermopower in quasi-two-dimensional a $τ$-type organic conductor, $τ-(EDO-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuBr_2)_{1+y}$ ($y \le 0.875$), from the view point of a "pudding mold"-type band structure. We calculate the electronic band structure using an \textit{ab initio} band calculation package, and obtain a tight binding model fit to the \textit{ab initio} band structure. Using the model and the Boltzmann's equation approach, we calculate the temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient. We conclude that the peculiar band structure is the origin of the large Seebeck coe…
The local magnetic moment of Ti:ZnO is calculated from first principles by using the corrected-band-gap scheme (CBGS). The results shows that the system is magnetic with the magnetization of 0.699 $μ_B$ per dopant. The origin of the local magnetic moment is considered to be the impurity band partially occupied by the donor electrons in the conduction band. Further, the impacts of applying Hubbard U to Ti-d orbital on the magnetic moment have been investigated.
Based on ab initio density functional theory, we have investigated a microscopic mechanism that leads to Fe$^{2+}_{B}$/Fe$^{3+}_{B}$ dimerization and consequent ferroelectricity in charge ordered Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$ with $P2$ symmetry. In addition to the simple inter-site Coulomb repulsion, quantum hybridization effects are invoked to explain the Fe$^{2+}_{B}$/Fe$^{3+}_{B}$ bond dimerization. Our results, based on the generalized gradient approximation + Hubbard $U$ (GGA+$U$) method, indicate that noncentrosymmetric $P2$ magnetite shows a finite and sizeable ferroelectric polarization along the $b…
In recent experiments the irradiation of insulators of perovskite type with swift heavy ions under glancing incidence has been shown to provide a unique means to generate periodically arranged nanodots at the surface. The physical origin of these patterns has been suggested to stem from a highly anisotropic electron density distribution within the bulk. In order to show the relevance of the electron density distribution of the target we present a model calculation for the system Xe$^{+23}$ $\to$ SrTiO$_{3}$ that is known to produce the aforementioned surface modifications. On the basis of the …
Lattice thermal conductivity ($κ_{lat}$) of MgSiO$_3$ postperovskite (MgPPv) under the Earth's lower mantle high pressure-temperature conditions is studied using the phonon quasiparticle approach by combing \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics and lattice dynamics simulations. Phonon lifetimes are extracted from the phonon quasiparticle calculations, and the phonon group velocities are computed from the anharmonic phonon dispersions, which in principle capture full anharmonicity. It is found that throughout the lowermost mantle, including the D" region, $κ_{lat}$ of MgPPv is ~25% larger than …
By using \textit{ab initio} calculations with the HSE06 hybrid functional and GW approximation combined with numerical solution of the Bethe Salpeter equation (GW-BSE) we predict the existence of diverse number of excitonic states in multifunctional hydroxides \ce{\textit{X}(OH)2} (\textit{X}= Mg and Ca) that were not previously reported experimentally or theoretically. Imaginary part of the dielectric function and reflectivity spectra show very strong peaks corresponding to the electron-hole pair states of large binding energy. The origin of the excitons is attributed to strong localization o…
An ab initio Green's function study of the electron transport properties of the selected metal-porphyrin complexes has been performed. Transmission spectra and current-voltage dependence have been calculated for the porphyrin molecule located between gold electrodes in the presence of interaction with metal atoms, which are most common in biochemistry (Fe(II), Fe(III), Mn(II), and Zn(II)). It was shown that the estimated Fermi level almost coincides with the LUMO level of Fe(II)-porphyrin and Fe(III)-porphyrin, resulting in significant conductance at small voltage biases. Conductance of Mn(II)…
We present a combined treatment of the non-equilibrium dynamics and transport of electrons and phonons by carrying out \textit{ab initio} calculations of the fully coupled electron and phonon Boltzmann transport equations. We find that the presence of mutual drag between the two carriers causes the thermopower to be enhanced and dominated by the transport of phonons, rather than electrons as in the traditional semiconductor picture. Drag also strongly boosts the intrinsic electron mobility, thermal conductivity and the Lorenz number. Impurity scattering is seen to suppress the drag-enhancement…
We present a systematic approach to modeling the electrical and structural properties of charge-mismatched superlattices from first principles. Our strategy is based on bulk calculations of the parent compounds, which we perform as a function of in-plane strain and out-of-plane electric displacement field. The resulting two-dimensional phase diagrams allow us to accurately predict, without performing further calculations, the behavior of a layered heterostructure where the aforementioned building blocks are electrostatically and elastically coupled, with an arbitrary choice of the interface ch…
The frequency dependence of the self energy of a general many--body problem is identified as a main obstacle in correlation calculations based on local approaches. A frequency independent formulation is proposed instead and proven to yield exactly the same numerical results as the original common scheme. Our approach is embedded in a general local-orbital based ab initio frame to obtain the Green's function for large heterogenous systems. First a Green's function formalism is introduced. Then the self energy is constructed from an incremental scheme. Subsequently we apply the proposed frequenc…
We present a detailed study of a monolayer film of 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (PTCDA) on Ag(111) (the PTCDA/Ag(111) system). The study is done within density functional theory with the use of the periodic slab model. The slab is chosen to contain a PTCDA monolayer film on a silver thin film of different thicknesses (6, 9, and 12 layers) with the (111) orientation. We show that one of two surface states of the pure Ag(111) films transforms into an unoccupied interface state due to the adsorbate-substrate interaction. The relation of the resulting state to the unoccupied …
Combining experiments on luminescent centres in hexagonal boron nitride with the polaron model and ab initio methods towards the identification of their microscopic origin
Silicon telluride (Si2Te3) is a silicon-based 2D chalcogenide with potential applications in optoelectronics. It has a unique crystal structure where Si atoms form Si-Si dimers to occupy the "metal" sites. In this paper, we report an ab initio computational study of its optical dielectric properties using the GW approximation and the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE). Strong optical anisotropy is discovered. The imaginary part of the dielectric constant in the direction parallel to the Si-Si dimers is found to be much lower than that perpendicular to the dimers. We show this effect originates from…
$β$- Eucryptite (LiAlSiO4) is a potential electrolyte for Li- ion battery due to its high Li- ion conductivity and very small volume thermal expansion coefficient. We have performed ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations of $β$- Eucryptite to study the origin of high temperature superionic phase transition in this material. The simulations are able to provide the microscopic understanding of the one -dimensional superionicity that occurs along the hexagonal c-axis and is associated with the order-disorder nature of the phase transition. The Li ionic conductivity is found to enhance due to th…
By carrying out density functional theory (DFT) analysis within the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) framework, we investigate the quantum transport properties of Au-C60-Au molecular junctions from the first principles. We briefly review the NEGF-DFT formalism and present some of our data. We found that at small electrode separations (9-13 Angstrom), the Au-C60-Au junctions show metallic behaviour with conductance G ~ 2e^{2}/h and current I ~ 1-3 microAmpere in the linear regime (bias voltage V < 0.3 Volt). The physical mechanism is the resonance tunnelling through partially occ…
We use ab initio local stress calculations to investigate layer-by-layer ab initio stress inside late transition metal (111) surfaces, focusing on the origin of stress on the surface top layer. It is found that the band shift on each surface layer is strongly correlated with the in-plane stress. For the top layer, this correlation can be explained by the Friedel model. The reduction of the local d-band width due to the coordination reduction is the main origin of both the d-band center shift and in-plane tensile stress. The changes in the directional d-d bonding character analyzed by the in-pl…
We describe an ab-initio disordered local moment theory for long period magnetic phases and investigate the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the magnetic states in the heavy rare earth elements (HRE), namely paramagnetic, conical and helical anti-ferromagnetic(HAFM), fan and ferromagnetic (FM) states. We obtain a generic HRE magnetic phase diagram which is consequent on the response of the common HRE valence electronic structure to f-electron magnetic moment ordering. The theory directly links the first order HAFM-FM transition to the loss of Fermi surface nesting as well as provid…
There has been growing interest in perovskite BaSnO3 due to its desirable properties for oxide electronic devices including high electron mobility at room temperature and optical transparency. As these electronic and optical properties originate largely from the electronic structure of the material, here the basic electronic structure of epitaxially-grown BaSnO3 films is studied using high-energy-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy in a transmission electron microscope and ab initio calculations. This study provides a detailed description of the dielectric function of BaSnO3, includin…
A recently developed linear-scaling density-functional theory (LS-DFT) formalism is used to calculate optical absorption spectra of hybrids of C60 and the conjugated polymers poly(para-phenylene) (PPP) and poly(para-phenylene vinylene) (PPV). The use of a LS formalism allows calculations on large systems with realistic proportions of C60, which has been of interest for the use of such materials in photovoltaics. Two different bonding structures are tested for the hybrid PPP and for both systems additional peaks are present in the absorption spectra below the original onset of absorption. By id…
A mixed quantum mechanical and Monte Carlo method for calculating Auger spectra from nanoclusters is presented. The approach, based on a cluster method, consists of two steps. Ab initio quantum mechanical calculations are first performed to obtain accurate energy and probability distributions of the generated Auger electrons. In a second step, using the calculated line shape as electron source, the Monte Carlo method is used to simulate the effect of inelastic losses on the original Auger line shape. The resulting spectrum can be directly compared to 'as-acquired' experimental spectra, thus av…
We present a first-principles approach for the computation of the magnetic Gibbs free energy of materials using magnetically constrained supercell calculations. Our approach is based on an adiabatic approximation of slowly varying local moment orientations, the so-called finite-temperature disordered local moment picture. It describes magnetic phase transitions and how electronic and/or magnetostructural mechanisms generate a discontinuous (first-order) character. We demonstrate that the statistical mechanics of the local moment orientations can be described by an affordable number of supercel…
We have studied the low-frequency dynamics of the charge carriers in different organic charge-transfer salts $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X with polymeric anions X by using resistance noise spectroscopy. Our aim is to investigate the structural, glass-like transition caused by the conformational degrees of freedom of the BEDT-TTF molecules' terminal ethylene groups. Although of fundamental importance for studies of the electronic ground-state properties, the phenomenology of the glassy dynamics is only scarcely investigated and its origin is not understood. Our systematic studies of fluctuation spectrosc…
In this paper we have used our recently developed ab initio Wannier-function-based methodology to perform extensive Hartree-Fock and correlated calculations on Li$_{2}$O and LiCl to compute their Born effective charges. Results thus obtained are in very good agreement with the experiments. In particular, for the case of Li$_{2}$O, we resolve a controversy originating in the experiment of Osaka and Shindo {[}Solid State Commun. 51 (1984) 421] who had predicted the effective charge of Li ions to be in the range 0.58--0.61, a value much smaller compared to its nominal value of unity, thereby, sug…
The phonon spectra of calcium, strontium, barium, radium, cadmium, zinc, magnesium, germanium, tin, and lead titanates with the perovskite structure are calculated from first principles within the density functional theory. By analyzing the unstable modes in the phonon spectra, the possible lattice distortions are determined and the energies of the corresponding phases are calculated. From analyzing the phonon spectra, force constants, and eigenvectors of TO phonons, a conclusion is drawn on the origin of the ferroelectricity in considered crystals. It is shown that the main factors determinin…
Non-radiative decay channels in the L-edge fluorescence spectra from transition metal-aqueous solutions give rise to spectral dips in X-ray transmission spectra. Their origin is unraveled here using partial and inverse partial fluorescence yields on the micro-jet combined with multi-reference ab initio electronic structure calculations. Comparing Fe2+, Fe3+, and Co2+ systems we demonstrate unequivocally that spectral dips are due to a state-dependent electron delocalization within the manifold of d-orbitals.
The anisotropy in the electronic structure of the inherently nanolaminated ternary phase Cr$_{2}$GeC is investigated by bulk-sensitive and element selective soft x-ray absorption/emission spectroscopy. The angle-resolved absorption/emission measurements reveal differences between the in-plane and out-of-plane bonding at the (0001) interfaces of Cr$_{2}$GeC. The Cr $L_{2,3}$, C $K$, and Ge $M_{1}$, $M_{2,3}$ emission spectra are interpreted with first-principles density-functional theory (DFT) including core-to-valence dipole transition matrix elements. For the Ge $4s$ states, the x-ray emissio…
Nonradiative carrier recombination at semiconductor deep centers is of great importance to both fundamental physics and device engineering. In this letter, we provide a revised analysis of K. Huang's original nonradiative multi-phonon (NMP) theory with ab initio calculations. First, we identify at first-principle level that Huang's concise formula gives the same results as the matrix based formula, and Huang's high temperature formula provides an analytical expression for the coupling constant in Marcus theory. Secondly, the anharmonic effects are corrected by taking into account local phonon …
Many physical properties of metals can be understood in terms of the free electron model, as proven by the Wiedemann-Franz law. According to this model, electronic thermal conductivity ($κ_{el}$) can be inferred from the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE). However, the BTE does not perform well for some complex metals, such as Cu. Moreover, the BTE cannot clearly describe the origin of the thermal energy carried by electrons or how this energy is transported in metals. The charge distribution of conduction electrons in metals is known to reflect the electrostatic potential (EP) of the ion core…
By first-principles LSDA+U calculations, we revealed that the current physical picture of defective uranium dioxide suggested solely by neutron diffraction analysis is unsatisfactory. An understanding based on quantum theory has been established as a thermodynamical competition among point defects and cuboctahedral cluster, which naturally interprets the puzzled origin of the asymmetric O' and O'' interstitials. It also gives a clear and consistent agreement with most available experimental data. Unfortunately, the observed high occupation of O'' site cannot be accounted for in this picture an…
We present results of extensive theoretical studies of Co$_2$FeAl$_{1-x}$Si$_x$ Heusler alloys, which have been performed in the framework of density functional theory employing the all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave scheme. It is shown that the Si-rich alloys are more resistive to structural disorder and as a consequence Si stabilizes the $L2_1$ structure. Si alloying changes position of the Fermi level, pushing it into the gap of the minority spin-band. It is also shown that the hyperfine field on Co nuclei increases with the Si concentration, and this increase origi…
The layered perovskite PrBaCo2O5.5+x demonstrates a strong negative thermal expansion (NTE) which holds potential for being fabricated into composites with zero thermal expansion. The NTE was found to be intimately associated with the spontaneous magnetic ordering, known as magnetovolume effect (MVE). Here we report with compelling evidences that the continuous-like MVE in PrBaCo2O5.5+x is intrinsically of discontinuous character, originating from an magnetoelectric transition from an antiferromagnetic insulating large-volume (AFILV) phase to a ferromagnetic metallic small-volume (FMSV) phase.…
Exciton condensation indicating the spontaneous formation of electron-hole pair can cause the phase transition from a semimetal to an excitonic insulator by gap opening at the Fermi surface. While the idea of this excitonic insulator has been proposed for decades, current theoretical approaches can only provide qualitative descriptions, and a quantitative predicting tool is still missing. To shed insight on this problem, we developed an $ab~initio$ method based on the finite-temperature density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory to compute the exciton condensation critical beh…
The ab initio full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method explicitly designed for the slab geometry was employed to elucidate the physical origin of the layer potentials for the trilayers nFe/3Cr/nFe(001), where n is the number of Fe monolayers. The thickness of the transition-metal ferromagnet has been ranged from $n=1$ up to n=8 while the spacer thickness was fixed to 3 monolayers. The calculated potentials were inserted in the Fuchs-Sondheimer formalism in order to calculate the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) ratio. The predicted GMR ratio was compared with the experiment and the o…
The puzzling observation of room temperature ferromagnetism in double perovskites (A$_2$BB$'$O$_6$), despite having the magnetic lattice of B-ions diluted by non-magnetic B$'$-ions, have been examined for Sr$_2$FeReO$_6$. {\it Ab-initio} spin spiral electronic structure calculations along various high symmetry directions in reciprocal space are used to determine the exchange interactions entering an extended Heisenberg model, which is then solved classically using Monte Carlo simulations to determine the ferromagnetic transition temperature T$_c$. We find that one must consider onsite Coulomb …
The electronic and magnetic structures of $ {\rm ScFe_2} $ and of its dihydride $ {\rm ScFe_2H_2} $ are self-consistently calculated within the density functional theory (DFT) using the all electron augmented spherical wave (ASW) method with the local spin density approximation (LSDA) for treating effects of exchange and correlation. The results of the enhancement of the magnetization upon hydrogen insertion are assessed within an analysis of the chemical bonding properties from which we suggest that both hydrogen bond with iron and cell expansion effects play a role in the change of the magni…
