We revisit the commonly accepted notion that the difference between interaction and reaction cross sections is negligible at relativistic energies, and show that, especially in small mass number region, it is large enough to help probe nuclear structure. For analyses of the difference, we construct "pseudo data" for the reaction cross sections using a phenomenological black-sphere model of nuclei since empirical data are very limited at high energies. The comparison with the empirical interaction cross sections suggests a significant difference between the reaction and interaction cross sections for stable projectiles on a carbon target, which is of the order of 0-100 mb.
Using hadronic Lagrangians that include the interaction of pentaquark $Θ^+$ baryon with $K$ and $N$, we evaluate the cross sections for its production from meson-proton, proton-proton, and photon-proton reactions near threshold. With empirical coupling constants and form factors, the predicted cross sections are about 1.5 mb in kaon-proton reactions, 0.1 mb in rho-nucleon reactions, 0.05 mb in pion-nucleon reactions, 20 $μ$b in proton-proton reactions, and 40 nb in photon-proton reactions.
Within the framework of the improved quantum molecular dynamics model, the medium modifications on the free nucleon-nucleon elastic cross sections are investigated. By using various in-medium nucleon-nucleon elastic cross sections in the model, the nucleon-induced reactions on various targets are simulated, and the excitation functions of reaction cross sections in the energy range from 25 MeV to 1 GeV are calculated. By comparing the calculations with the experimental data, an isospin, density, and momentum-dependence medium correction factor on free nucleon-nucleon elastic cross sections is …
The relationship between the backward elastic scattering probabilities and reaction cross sections is derived. This is a a very simple and useful method to extract reaction cross sections for heavy ion systems. We compare the results of our method with those using the traditional full elastic scattering angular distributions, for several systems, at energies near and above the Coulomb barrier. From the calculated reaction and capture cross sections using the present method, we derive the cross sections of other mechanisms for nearly spherical systems.
The cross-sections of proton-induced reactions on 184W at incident proton energy below 200MeV are calculated and analyzed including reaction cross-sections, elastic scattering angular distributions, energy spectra and double differential cross section. Nuclear theoretical models which integrate the optical model, distorted born wave approximation theory, the intra-nuclear cascade model, the exciton model, the Hauser-Feshbach theory and the evaporation model are used in the reactions. Theoretical results are compared with the existent experimental data.
Total reaction cross sections are predicted for proton scattering from various nuclei. A simple functional form has been used that reproduces the total reaction cross sections for the scattering of protons from (15) nuclei spanning the mass range from ${}^9$Be to ${}^{238}$U and for proton energies 10 to 300 MeV.
We study the scaling properties of proton-nucleus total reaction cross sections for stable nuclei and propose an approximate expression in proportion to Z^{2/3}σ_{pp}^{total} + N^{2/3} σ_{pn}^{total}. Based on this expression, we can derive a relation that enables us to predict a total reaction cross section for any stable nucleus within 10% uncertainty at most, using the empirical value of the total reaction cross section of a given nucleus.
Fusion reactions with a weakly bound projectile are studied using the double-folding model along with a repulsive interaction modifying term. Using this modified potential, including nuclear matter incompressibility effects, the fusion reaction cross sections and suppression parameters are calculated for 9Be +209Bi,208Pb,29Si and 27Al reactions. The results show that applying these effects at energies near the Coulomb barrier improves the agreement between the calculated and experimental cross sections, and modifies the mean values of the suppression parameter.
A simple functional form has been found that gives a good representation of the total reaction cross sections for the scattering from ${}^{208}$Pb of protons with energies in the range 30 to 300 MeV.
The main progresses in the multinucleon transfer reactions at energies close to the Coulomb barrier are reviewed. After a short presentation of the experimental progress and theoretical progress, the predicted production cross sections for unknown neutron-rich heavy nuclei and the trans-uranium nuclei are presented.
This paper presents reaction cross section predictions. These predictions are the result of a continuous pipeline which originates from a microscopic nuclear interaction. Density parameters and effective nucleon-nucleon cross sections (both involved in the reaction calculations) are by-products of the same equation of state. First, we perform tests of sensitivity to medium effects using reactions involving 208-Pb, a stable but weakly isospin-asymmetric nucleus. We also show predictions for collisions of some neutron-rich isotopes of Calcium and Argon. We observe significant sensitivity of the …
We calculate the differences between reaction and interaction cross sections in the collisions of relativistic light ions with $\text{A}<40$ in the framework of Glauber theory. Although, in the optical approximation of Glauber theory these differences are approximately 1% of the reaction cross sections or less, they increase up to 3-4% when all scattering diagrams of Glauber theory are included in calculation.
Reaction cross sections of carbon isotopes for proton scattering are calculated in large energy region. Density distributions of carbon isotopes are obtained from relativistic mean field results. Calculations are based on two procedures: the Glauber theory and relativistic impulse approximation, and results are compared with each other as well as with experimental data. A strong relationship between reaction cross section and root-mean-square radius is clearly shown for 12C using a model distribution.
A simple functional form has been found that gives a good representation of the total reaction cross sections for the scattering of protons from (15) nuclei spanning the mass range ${}^{9}$Be to ${}^{238}$U and for proton energies ranging from 20 to 300 MeV.
Meson-meson nonresonant reactions governed by the quark-interchange mechanism are studied in a potential that is derived from QCD. S-wave elastic phase shifts for I=2 ππand I=3/2 K πscattering are obtained with wave functions determined by the central spin-independent term of the potential. The reactions include inelastic scatterings of two mesons in the ground-state pseudoscalar octet and the ground-state vector nonet. Cross sections for reactions involving pion, rho, K and K^* indicate that mesonic interactions in matter consisting of only K and K^* can be stronger than mesonic interactions …
We systematically analyze nuclear reaction data that are sensitive to nuclear size, namely, proton-nucleus total reaction cross sections and differential elastic cross sections, using a phenomenological black-sphere approximation of nuclei that we are developing. In this framework, the radius of the black sphere is found to be a useful length scale that simultaneously accounts for the observed proton-nucleus total reaction cross section and first diffraction peak in the proton elastic differential cross section. This framework is expected to be applicable to any kind of projectile that is stro…
Based on the statistical theory of light nucleus reactions (STLN), the description of the complicated emission processes of proton and light composite charged particles are further improved through considering the effects of Coulomb barriers both in incident and different outgoing reaction channels. And the analysis of the reaction channels including the sequential and simultaneous emission processes for $p + ^7$Li reaction is performed in detail. So the partial spectra of all of outgoing particles are also obtained for different reaction processes. The calculated double differential cross sec…
Isotope-dependence of measured reaction cross sections in scattering of $^{28-32}$Ne isotopes from $^{12}$C target at 240 MeV/nucleon is analyzed by the double-folding model with the Melbourne $g$-matrix. The density of projectile is calculated by the mean-field model with the deformed Wood-Saxon potential. The deformation is evaluated by the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. The deformation of projectile enhances calculated reaction cross sections to the measured values.
Using the Glauber theory, we calculate reaction cross sections for the deformed halo nucleus $^{31}$Ne. To this end, we assume that the $^{31}$Ne nucleus takes the $^{30}$Ne + $n$ structure. In order to take into account the rotational excitation of the core nucleus $^{30}$Ne, we employ the particle-rotor model (PRM). We compare the results to those in the adiabatic limit of PRM, that is, the Nilsson model, and show that the Nilsson model works reasonably well for the reaction cross sections of $^{31}$Ne. We also investigate the dependence of the reaction cross sections on the ground state pro…
We studied the effect of cross section on mass asymmetric systems. The mass asymmetry of a reaction can be defined by the asymmetry parameter η = |(AT - AP)/(AT + AP)|; [1] where AT and AP are the masses of the target and projectile, respectively. The η = 0 corresponds to the symmetric reactions, whereas non-zero values of η define different asymmetries of a reaction. Reactions include 208Pb82 + 208Pb82 having η = 0, 40Ca20 + 208Pb82 having η = 0.6 and 12C6 + 197Au79 having η = 0.8 This work has been carried out within the frame work of isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model…
$^{50}$Ti-induced fusion reactions to synthesize superheavy elements are studied systematically with the two-step model developed recently, where fusion process is divided into approaching phase and formation phase. Furthermore, the residue cross sections for different neutron evaporation channels are evaluated with the statistical evaporation model. In general, the calculated cross sections are much smaller than that of $^{48}$Ca-induced fusion reactions, but the results are within the detection capability of experimental facilities nowadays. The maximum calculated residue cross section for p…
Neutron total reaction cross sections at 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, and 75 MeV from nuclei 12C, 28Si, 56Fe, 90Zr, and 208Pb have been measured and are compared with (microscopic) optical model predictions. The optical potentials were obtained in coordinate space by full folding effective nucleon-nucleon interactions with realistic nuclear ground state density matrices. Good to excellent agreement is found.
Indirect methods play an important role in the determination of nuclear reaction cross sections that are hard to measure directly. In this paper we investigate the feasibility of using the so-called surrogate method to extract neutron-capture cross sections for low energy compound-nuclear reactions in spherical and near-spherical nuclei. We present the surrogate method and develop a statistical nuclear-reaction simulation to explore different approaches to utilize surrogate reaction data. We assess the success of each approach by comparing the extracted cross sections with a predetermined benc…
Angular distributions of elastic $^{140}$Ce($α$,$α$)$^{140}$Ce scattering are analyzed in the framework of the optical model from low energies around the Coulomb barrier up to about 40\,MeV. From the local fits the total reaction cross section $σ_{\rm{reac}}$ is extracted. This procedure requires experimental scattering data with small uncertainties. The results for $σ_{\rm{reac}}$ are compared to predictions of different systematic global potentials. It is found that the total reaction cross section $σ_{\rm{reac}}$ is well predicted from all global potentials under study although the reproduc…
Nucleon total reaction and neutron total cross sections to 300 MeV for 12C and 208Pb, and for 65 MeV spanning the mass range, are predicted using coordinate space optical potentials formed by full folding of effective nucleon-nucleon interactions with realistic nuclear ground state densities. Good to excellent agreement is found with existing data.
It was recently suggested that the odd-even staggering of reaction cross sections is an evidence of the pair- ing anti-halo effect on projectile radii. We define the dimensionless staggering parameters, Γrds and ΓR, for projectile radii and reaction cross sections, respectively, and analyze the relation between Γrds and ΓR for the scattering of 14,15,16C from a 12C target at 83 MeV/A by taking account of projectile-breakup and nuclear- medium effects newly with the microscopic version of the continuum discretized coupled-channels method. The value of ΓR is deviated from that of Γrds by the pro…
The direct measurement of the reaction or capture (fusion) cross section is a difficult task since it would require the measurement of individual cross sections of many reaction channels, and most of them could be reached only by specific experiments. This would require different experimental set-ups not always available at the same laboratory and, consequently, such direct measurements would demand a large amount of beam time and would take probably some years to be reached. Because of that, the measurements of elastic scattering angular distributions that cover full angular ranges and optica…
Reaction cross-sections are calculated using the Coulomb modified Glauber model for deformed target nuclei. The deformed nuclear matter density of the target is expanded into multipoles of order k = 0,2,4.The reaction cross-sections between some spherical and deformed nuclei are studied at energy range (10-1000 MeV/nucleon). The most significant effects in the intermediate energy range are the Coulomb field and in-medium effect that modified the trajectory of the incident beams. Introducing the deformation effect beside the Coulomb field and in-medium effect improves the agreement with the exp…
We systematically calculate the total reaction cross sections of oxygen isotopes, $^{15-24}$O, on a $^{12}$C target at high energies using the Glauber theory. The oxygen isotopes are described with Slater determinants generated from a phenomenological mean-field potential. The agreement between theory and experiment is generally good, but a sharp increase of the reaction cross sections from ^{21}O to ^{23}O remains unresolved. To examine the sensitivity of the diffraction pattern of elastic scattering to the nuclear surface, we study the differential elastic-scattering cross sections of proton…
The breakup cross sections in the reaction $^6$He+$^{12}$C are calculated at about 40 MeV/nucleon using the high-energy approximation (HEA) and with the help of microscopic optical potentials (OP) of interaction with the target nucleus $^{12}$C of the projectile nucleus fragments $^4$He and 2n. Considering the di-neutron $h$=2n as a single particle the relative motion $hα$ wave function is estimated so that to explain both the separation energy of $h$ in $^6$He and the rms radius of the latter. The stripping and absorbtion total cross sections are calculated and their sum is compared with the …
We systematically study total reaction cross sections of carbon isotopes with N=6-16 on a proton target for wide range of incident energies, putting an emphasis on the difference from the case of a carbon target. The analysis includes the reaction cross sections of ^{19,20,22}C at 40 AMeV, the data of which have recently been measured at RIKEN. The Glauber theory is used to calculate the reaction cross sections. To describe the intrinsic structure of the carbon isotopes, we use a Slater determinant generated from a phenomenological mean-field potential, and construct the density distributions.…
Accurate total reaction cross section models are important to achieving reliable predictions from spallation and transport codes. The latest version of the Cascade Exciton Model (CEM) as incorporated in the code CEM03.03, and the Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code (MCNP6), both developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), each use such cross sections. Having accurate total reaction cross section models in the intermediate energy region ($\sim$50 MeV to $\sim$5 GeV) is very important for different applications, including analysis of space environments, use in medical physics, and acce…
Total reaction cross sections of deuteron, $σ_d^{\rm R}$, are calculated by a microscopic three-body reaction model. The reaction model has no free adjustable parameter and applicable to reactions at various deuteron incident energies $E_d$ and with both stable and unstable nuclei. The predicted $σ_d^{\rm R}$ are consistent with those evaluated by a phenomenological optical potential for $E_d\leq 200$ MeV in which the potential has been parametrized. A simple formula of $σ_d^{\rm R}$ up to $E_d=1$ GeV, as a function of $E_d$, the target mass number $A$ and its atomic number $Z$, is given.
We calculate the proton-nucleus total reaction cross sections at different energies of incident protons within the optical limit approximation of the Glauber theory. The isospin effect has been taken into account. The nucleon distribution is obtained in the framework of macroscopic nuclear models in a way depending on the equation of state of uniform nuclear matter near the saturation density. We find that at an energy of order 40 MeV, the reaction cross section calculated for neutron- rich isotopes significantly increases as the parameter L characterizing the density dependence of the symmetr…
We construct a formula for proton-nucleus total reaction cross section as a function of the mass and neutron excess of the target nucleus and the proton incident energy. We deduce the dependence of the cross section on the mass number and the proton incident energy from a simple argument involving the proton optical depth within the framework of a black sphere approximation of nuclei, while we describe the neutron excess dependence by introducing the density derivative of the symmetry energy, L, on the basis of a radius formula constructed from macroscopic nuclear models. We find that the cros…
The dependence of fusion cross section on the isotopic composition of colliding nuclei is analysed within the dinuclear system concept for compound nucleus formation. Probabilities of fusion and surviving probabilities, ingredients of the evaporation residue cross sections, depend decisively on the neutron numbers of the dinuclear system. Evaporation residue cross sections for the production of actinides and superheavy nuclei, listed in table form, are discussed and compared with existing experimental data. Neutron-rich radioactive projectiles are shown to lead to similar fusion cross sections…
The neutron capture cross section for $^{90}Zr(n, γ)$ has recently been determined using surrogate $^{92}Zr(p, dγ)$ data and nuclear reaction theory. That work employed an approximate fitting method based on Bayesian Monte Carlo sampling to determine parameters needed for calculating the $^{90}Zr(n, γ)$ cross section. Here, we improve the approach by introducing a more sophisticated Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling method. We present preliminary results.
A microscopic calculation of the optical potential for nucleon-nucleus scattering has been performed by explicitly coupling the elastic channel to all the particle-hole (p-h) excitation states in the target and to all relevant pickup channels. These p-h states may be regarded as doorway states through which the flux flows to more complicated configurations, and to long-lived compound nucleus resonances. We calculated the reaction cross sections for the nucleon induced reactions on the targets $^{40,48}$Ca, $^{58}$Ni, $^{90}$Zr and $^{144}$Sm using the QRPA description of target excitations, co…
We develop the method for the calculation of the total reaction cross sections induced by the halo nuclei and stable nuclei. This approach is based on the Glauber theory, which is valid for nuclear reactions at high energy. It is extended for nuclear reactions at low energy and intermediate energy by including both the quantum correction and Coulomb correction under the assumption of the effective nuclear density distribution. The calculated results of the total reaction cross section induced by stable nuclei agree well with the 30 experimental data within 10 percent accuracy. The comparison be…
The microscopic effective reaction theory is applied to deuteron-induced reactions. A reaction model-space characterized by a $p+n+{\rm A}$ three-body model is adopted, where A is the target nucleus, and the nucleon-target potential is described by a microscopic folding model based on an effective nucleon-nucleon interaction in nuclear medium and a one-body nuclear density of A. The three-body scattering wave function in the model space is obtained with the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC), and the eikonal reaction theory (ERT), an extension of CDCC, is applied to the calcu…
Total reaction cross sections are predicted for nucleons scattering from various nuclei. Projectile energies to 300 MeV are considered. So also are mass variations of those cross sections at selected energies. All predictions have been obtained from coordinate space optical potentials formed by full folding effective two-nucleon (NN) interactions with one body density matrix elements (OBDME) of the nuclear ground states. Good comparisons with data result when effective NN interactions defined by medium modification of free NN t matrices are used. Coupled with analyses of differential cross sec…
In order to clear up the sensitivity of the nucleus--nucleus reaction cross sections $σ_R$ to the nuclear matter distributions in exotic halo nuclei, we have calculated the values of $σ_R$ for scattering of $^6$He, $^{11}$Li, and $^{19}$C nuclei on several nuclear targets at the energy of 0.8 GeV/nucleon. The calculations were performed in the "rigid target" approximation to the Glauber theory, different shapes of the nuclear density distributions in $^6$He, $^{11}$Li, and $^{19}$C being assumed.
The two-step contribution to the spin-longitudinal and the spin-transverse cross sections of ^{12}C,^{40}Ca(p,n) reactions at 494 MeV and 346 MeV is calculated. We use a plane-wave approximation and evaluate the relative contributions from the one-step and the two-step processes. We found that the ratios of the two-step to the one-step processes are larger in the spin-transverse cross sections than in the spin-longitudinal ones. Combining these results with the distorted-wave impulse approximation (DWIA) results we obtained considerable two-step contributions to the spin-longitudinal and the s…
The antikaon production cross section from nucleon-nucleon reactions near threshold is studied in a meson exchange model. We include both pion and kaon exchange, but neglect the interference between the amplitudes. In case of pion exchange the antikaon production cross section can be expressed in terms of the antikaon production cross section from a pion-nucleon interaction, which we take from the experimental data if available. Otherwise, a $K^*$-resonance exchange model is introduced to relate the different reaction cross sections. In case of kaon exchange the antikaon production cross secti…
We revisit the Glauber model to study the heavy ion reaction cross sections and elastic scattering angular distributions at low and intermediate energies. The Glauber model takes nucleon-nucleon cross sections and nuclear densities as inputs and has no free parameter and thus can predict the cross sections for unknown systems. The Glauber model works at low energies down to Coulomb barrier with very simple modifications. We present new parametrization of measured total cross sections as well as ratio of real to imaginary parts of the scattering amplitudes for pp and np collisions as a function…
Existing data on near-barrier fusion excitation functions of medium and heavy nucleus-nucleus systems have been analyzed using a simple diffused barrier formula derived assuming the Gaussian shape of the barrier height distributions. Fusion cross section is obtained by folding the Gaussian barrier distribution with the classical expression for the fusion cross section for a fixed barrier. The energy dependence of the fusion cross section, thus obtained, provides good description to the existing data on near-barrier fusion and capture excitation functions for medium and heavy nucleus-nucleus sy…
We systematically analyze total reaction cross sections of carbon isotopes with N=6--16 on a $^{12}$C target for wide range of incident energy. The intrinsic structure of the carbon isotope is described by a Slater determinant generated from a phenomenological mean-field potential, which reasonably well reproduces the ground state properties for most of the even $N$ isotopes. We need separate studies not only for odd nuclei but also for $^{16}$C and $^{22}$C. The density of the carbon isotope is constructed by eliminating the effect of the center of mass motion. For the calculations of the cro…
The continuum-discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) for exclusive reactions and the eikonal reaction theory (ERT) as an extension of CDCC to inclusive reactions are applied to deuteron induced reactions. The CDCC result reproduces experimental data on the reaction cross section for $d+^{58}$Ni scattering at 200 MeV/nucleon and ERT does data on the neutron-stripping cross section for inclusive $^7$Li$(d,n)$ reaction at 40 MeV. For deuteron induced reactions at 200 MeV/nucleon, target-dependence of the reaction, elastic-breakup, nucleon-stripping, nucleon-removal, complete- and incomplete-f…
Using the relationship between the two-particle overlap functions (TOF's) and the two-body density matrix (TDM), the TOF's for the $^{16}$O$(e,e^{\prime}pp)^{14}$C$_{\rm g.s.}$ reaction are calculated on the basis of a TDM obtained within the Jastrow correlation method. The main contributions of the removal of $^1S_0$ and $^3P_1$ $pp$ pairs from $^{16}$O are considered in the calculation of the cross section of the $^{16}$O$(e,e^{\prime}pp)^{14}$C$_{\rm g.s.}$ reaction using the Jastrow TOF's which include short-range correlations (SRC). The results are compared with the cross sections calcula…
We examine commonly used approaches to deal with the scattering of electrons from a bound nucleon. Several prescriptions are shown to be related by gauge transformations. Nevertheless, due to current non-conservation, they yield different results. These differences reflect the size of the uncertainty that persists in the interpretation of $(e,e'p)$ experiments.
The one- and two-step mechanisms of the $pd\to ^3H_ΛK^+$ reaction in the range of incident proton kinetic energy 1.13-3.0 GeV have been investigated. A remarkable peculiarity of the two-step mechanism which incorporates subprocesses $pp\to dπ^+$ and $π^+n\to K^+Λ$ is the so called velocity matching providing the presence of all intermediate particles nearly to the on-mass-shell. The differential cross section has been calculated using a realistic model for the hypertritium $^3H_Λ$ wave function. The maximum value of the cross section is estimated as $\sim $1nb/sr. The contribution of the one-s…
Total reaction cross sections have been predicted for neucleons scattering from nuclei ranging in mass 6 to 238 and for projectile energies from just above noticeable giant resonance excitation to 300 MeV. So also have been the mass variations of those cross sections at selected energies when they have been calculated using coordinate space optical potentials formed by full folding effective two-nucleon (NN) interactions with one body density matrix elements (OBDME) of the nuclear ground states. Good comparisons with data result when effective NN interactions defined by medium modification of …
Elastic scattering data for $^{141}$Pr($α$,$α$)$^{141}$Pr have been analyzed to derive a new energy-dependent local potential for the $^{141}$Pr-$α$ system. This potential is used successfully to predict the cross section of the $^{141}$Pr($α$,n)$^{144}$Pm reaction at low energies where new experimental data have become available very recently. Contrary to various global potentials, this new potential is able to reproduce simultaneously elastic scattering data around and above the Coulomb barrier and reaction data below the Coulomb barrier for the $^{141}$Pr-$α$ system. Reasons for the partial…
In this review paper we present a detailed account of the extraction and the calculation of the total reaction cross section of strongly bound and weakly bound, stable and unstable, exotic, nuclei. We discuss the optical model and the more general coupled channels model of direct reactions. The effect of long-range absorption due to the coupling to excited states in the target and to the breakup continuum in the projectile is also discussed. The generalized optical theorem for charged particle scattering and the resulting sum-of differences method is then discussed. The so-called "quarter-poin…
The total reaction cross section is related to the elastic scattering angular distribution by a basic quantum-mechanical relation. We present new experimental data for alpha-induced reaction cross sections on 64Zn which allow for the first time the experimental verification of this simple relation at low energies by comparison of the new experimental reaction data to the result obtained from 64Zn(alpha,alpha)64Zn elastic scattering.
Background: Eclipse effect of the neutron and proton in a deuteron target is essential to correctly describe high-energy deuteron scattering. The nucleus-deuteron scattering needs information not only on the nucleus-proton but also the nucleus-neutron interaction, for which no direct measurement of the nucleus-neutron cross sections is available for unstable nuclei. Purpose: We systematically evaluated the total reaction cross sections by a deuteron target to explore the feasibility of extracting the nucleus-neutron interaction from measurable cross sections. Methods: High-energy nucleus-deute…
New experimental data for the $^{33}$S($α$,p)$^{36}$Cl reaction show a very unusual energy dependence. Contrary to common findings for many other $α$-induced reactions, statistical model calculations underestimate the measured cross sections at very low energies. The relatively huge cross sections at these low energies require a significant amount of single-particle strength in the measured energy range which exceeds by far 100% as soon as the additional strength from the competing $^{33}$S($α$,n)$^{36}$Ar reaction is taken into account. In addition, the new data deviate from a general trend f…
